Mark Wales is an ex-commandor in the SAS. He embarked on 10 tours of duty including four tours in Afghanistan. We spoke about his journey from school in Perth to his 11 years of training and education to reach the SAS. Mark broke down often misguided public perceptions of the SAS as well as providing incredible insights into the training, service and lifestyle he experienced during his time defence force. This week on the show, I am joined by former High Performance Manager of North Melbourne, Collingwood and Carlton Football Club, David Buttifant. Butters, well known for his time spent at Collingwood. He was a pivotal role player in the clubs success, revolutionising training in elite sport, Australia. Constantly pushing the boundaries to find innovation. High altitude training being one of these - taking AFL clubs over to Arizona in the US hiking up Mt Humphreys and trekking the Grand Canyon as well as training in incredible conditions to help find an edge and build resilience. He has an incredible drive in building resilience in young people, hence his new project Resilience builders in which he takes individuals and families of trips including hiking to Mt Everest Base camp to learn about how hard you can really push yourself! One of the most asked questions I get about my days at Princes Park, apart from taking Brett Deledio to the square, is “What is Crippa like?”. Hugo Toovey is a two-time cancer survivor with an incredible story. At 19 years of age, Hugo’s life drastically changed when he was first diagnosed with testicular cancer. He shares his incredible journey with us in beating the disease over a 5 year period as well as what he’s learnt along the way. However, unfortunately his story doesn’t finish there. Two months after being cleared free from this insidious disease, he was then diagnosed with bowel cancer which he has bravely battled through but still has lasting effects on his everyday life today. Now living cancer free, he shares his story to encourage early prevention, keeping on top of our physical and mental health and most importantly being proactive in checking in with the GP. Hugo teaches us not to put these uncomfortable check-ups off and I know I’ll be taking this more seriously. I learnt a lot from this great man about not taking life for granted, being positive in any situation and identifying what’s important in life. This is obviously a pretty heavy topic and this chat isn’t designed to scare people. It’s just to show that we need to be more proactive with our health in general. Hugh van Cuylenburg is the Founding Director/Facilitator of the world renowned Resilience Project. If you have been living under a rock and haven't heard of the Resilience Project, it's one of the biggest mental health and wellness programs running in Australia at the moment.
