Ep 580#580 - How to tame the Panthers

Duke has a very winnable, but also easily losable, game on the road Tuesday night against the Pitt Panthers and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here with all you need to know about Duke's next ACC opponent. Pitt has a deep roster that is a nice mix of youthful exuberance and experienced leadership. It is a team filled with plenty of height and length to give Duke trouble too. On this edition of the DBR Podcast, Jason and Donald are joined by former Chronicle Sports Editor Michael Corey for some insights in what it will take to notch another "dub" for the Blue Devils. And, after the break Mike Corey gives us some stories from his time at Duke, including the moment Coach K asked him if he wanted to join the Duke team as a walk-on. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 579#579 - The Mighty Mark Mitchell Helps Duke Dunk Notre Dame

Thanks to Mark Mitchell and Jeremy Roach, the Duke Blue Devils got their first road win of the season, but the Duke Basketball Roundup pulls no punches when talking about this victory over Notre Dame, there were a lot of problems in Duke's play against a team that is widely expected to be at the bottom of the ACC this season. Duke was anemic on offense throughout much of the game and several guys expected to be stars for this team suffered through dismal performances. Still, the emergence of Mitchell as a big offensive threat is a major development for Duke and something to get excited about. Jason and Donald have all the good, the bad, and the ugly from this one in their latest DBR Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 578#578 - Heading North to South Bend

Irish eyes have not been smiling very much this season at Notre Dame. The basketball team has suffered some pretty awful defeats. But, lately they have been showing signs of life, including a really impressive 20+ point beatdown of Virginia just a week ago. So, it will be a suddenly confident Notre Dame club that Duke will face on Saturday in South Bend. The Duke Basketball Roundup is here to tell you all you need to know about the Fighting Irish under new coach Micah Shrewsberry. For this preview, the guys are joined by JJ Jackson of the Locked on Blue Devils podcast. He has seen Notre Dame up close and has several interesting takes on how this matchup should go. This edition of the pod also dives into the question of Proctor vs. Foster... who should be Duke starting point guard? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 577#577 - Beating the Pulp out of the Orange

The Duke Blue Devils used an impressive second half shooting display to pull away from the Syracuse Orange in the first game of 2024, but the Duke Basketball Roundup crew says the story of this game is the stellar play of Mark Mitchell in the first half. The podcast gang has plenty to say about how MM kept Duke in the game with his energy and athleticism on those aggressive cuts to the basket. It was clearly Mitchell's best half of basketball in his hoops career. And then came the threes... one after another raining down on Syracuse as McCain, Roach, and Proctor got hot. Have a listen as the podcast guys break down all the good and bad from this game as Duke starts conference season with a 20-point victory. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 576#576 - How to Juice the Orange

On Episode 576, Jason is back from the slopes to join Donald as they preview tomorrow’s Duke Blue Devils game against the Syracuse Orange. The Orange have a new coach, as Jim Boeheim has retired and Adrian Autry is now in charge. With that coaching change has come the switch from the 2-3 matchup zone to man-to-man on defense. It also has come with more tempo when they’re defending the ball. Donald and Jason go through the Orange’s metrics, who they’ve played, and which players Duke should pay attention to when they take the floor. After the break, we discuss the tweet from Mark Mitchell’s dad that came in the late hours after the victory over Queens. The tweet caused a lot of confusion among the Duke fanbase, but Donald and Jason are here to take a measured approach on what it means and how Mark Mitchell can get back on track on the offensive end this season, particularly from beyond the arc. Ep 575#575 - Duke snatches the crown from Queens

The Duke Blue Devils take care of business in a big way against the Queens Royals, and we welcome Scott Rich to discuss it on Episode 575! With Jason hitting the snowy slopes of Utah, Scott joins Donald a few minutes after Duke defeats Queens 106-69 to recap the game, from the headlines to the incredible offensive display. Tyrese Proctor made his return to the floor from his ankle injury and performed well off the bench. However, both Donald and Scott were left impressed by how the defense performed and how it fueled the offense. They also marvel at the offensive performances of guys like Jared McCain, whose 24 points was a game high. After the break, we discuss some of the things to improve, nitpicking some items from a blowout victory. We then pick our play of the game and player of the week. And with Jason gone, Donald and Scott take it to the College Football Playoff, discussing Michigan’s chances to win it all. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 574#574 - How To Decrown Queens

Men’s basketball action restarts this weekend for the Duke Blue Devils, so we preview their upcoming matchup against Queens University on Episode 574. Duke takes on the Queens Royals in Cameron on Saturday, and it’s the first game after the Christmas break for the Blue Devils. It could also be the return of Tyrese Proctor to the floor after his ankle injury. Donald and Jason preview what to expect from the Royals when they take the floor. This is one of the smallest teams in Division 1, and they discuss who to watch out for and how Duke may match up with them on Saturday. After the break, recruiting news is on the front burner as VJ Edgecombe has narrowed his list of schools to Duke, Baylor, and Kentucky. Also, Khaman Maluach has burst onto the scene in a big way and has Duke as a potential landing spot in the Class of 2024. Jason and Donald discuss those two potential additions to an already loaded class as well as how some of the Class of 2024 is kicking some serious tail on the high school circuit. Ep 573#573 - Duke Football wins twice and FSU sues

We’re back after the Christmas holiday to recap a couple of big Duke Football wins as well as the future of the ACC on Episode 573! Duke Football won the Birmingham Bowl 17-10 last Saturday, and Donald and Jason recap the big win for the Blue Devils. Donald was there and gives some insight as to how everything was down in Alabama. Both of them comment on how awesome it was to see the team win and commend Trooper Taylor and the rest of the coaching staff and players for keeping it all together for one last run this season. The conversation shifts to next season, as new head coach Manny Diaz secured his first huge recruiting win with the transfer of Maalik Murphy from the Texas Longhorns to Duke. We marvel at how big of a get that is for Duke Football and what Murphy can bring to Durham next season. After the break, the Florida State Seminoles have officially sued the ACC to get out of the Grant of Rights deal, but not before the ACC sued first to keep them tied to the deal and the exit penalties should they decide to leave the conference. Luckily, Donald is an attorney in his normal life, and he read both of the complaints filed by FSU and the conference. He gives the breakdown on what each side is asking for in their various lawsuits and how this could affect the future of the ACC. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 572#572 - Bear Trap Nabs Baylor

This was a big win... a win Duke needed. The Blue Devils victory over Baylor was a crucial non-conference game for a team that didn't perform as expected over the first month of the season. But Duke has been a whole different animal lately and Baylor bore the brunt of it. The Duke Basketball Roundup does a deep dive into all the ways this edition of Duke is different from the version we saw a few weeks ago. The perimeter trio of Roach, Foster, and McCain were outstanding on both ends of the floor in this one. And we have a special shout out to Ryan Young, who had crucial minutes late in the contest to seal the win. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Baylor enters the game 9-1, but they are coming off a shocking loss to Michigan State where they just didn’t look good. David Hornbeak helps guide us through what makes Baylor successful and why they’re so good. They’re the best 3 point shooting team in the country, but they do other things well. We also discuss some of the things that Baylor doesn’t do well as we figure out how to beat the Bears in NYC. Ep 570#570 - Jared McCain's mom and dad

The Duke Basketball Roundup welcomes Jina and Lance McCain to the podcast, the parents of Duke freshman star Jared McCain. The DBR podcase has interviewed dozens of Duke players in its time, but this is one of the few times they have gotten to sit down with the parents of a Dukie to find out what that is like. The McCains provide plenty of laughs and unique insight into their very special son -- from his ascendancy to one of the top social media stars in the world to his impressive basketball skills, we get a peek behind the curtain to see what it takes to reach this level of success... and what a large role his whole family plays in all of it. And this interview would not be complete without at least one question about Jared's potential NBA plans... the family's answer may surprise you. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 569#569 - More Hofstra Thoughts and Big Picture Problems

If you thought one roundup of Duke's win over Hofstra was enough, think again! The DBR podcast is back with some more comments about that impressive victory. Jason and Donald have extra notions about what Kyle Filipowski's beautiful performance means for the future of this Duke team as well as some praise for Fran Friscilla's color commentary from the contest. After the break, the guys come back with a big picture look at what has been wrong with Duke thus far this season -- Jason says it begins with the sophomore class, which hasn't quite lived up to expectations thus far. And, before they wrap up this edition of the pod, the guys have some parting thoughts on the departure of Riley Leonard for the pot o' gold that awaits him at Notre Dame. Ep 568#568 - Near Fliple Double helps Duke tame Pride

The Duke Blue Devils took care of business against the Hofstra Pride, and we have an immediate postgame recap on Episode 568! Duke had to battle Hofstra for a half, but then started to pull away in the 2nd half with a dazzling display. Jason and Donald jump on about a half hour after the conclusion of the game to go quickly through all the good from this victory. Kyle Filipowski was incredible with his near triple double, and so many other players get some kudos for their play. After the break, we discuss some of the things that need improvement from the Blue Devils as they moved to 7-3 on the season. The guys will be back together tomorrow for more reactions to the game...literally! Donald is traveling to Atlanta, and the two will get together to bring you more heat as we enter the exam break. DBR Bites #30 - Don't Overlook Hofstra

One of the better mid-major teams in the country comes to Cameron Tuesday night as the Hofstra Pride arrive in Durham. Make no mistake this is a club capable of giving Duke a real game. We are sure Jon Scheyer and his staff are treating this opponent with respect and the DBR Podcast crew is too, with a breakdown of all the things to watch out for in this contest. Hofstra is a super-experienced team that is full of outstanding shooters. This will be one of the more dangerous backcourts Duke will face and the task of guarding scorer Tyler Thomas, a job that would have fallen to Tyrese Proctor, will be a critical one for the Blue Devils in this game. Have a listen to the latest edition of the podcast and don't forget to drop the guys an email with your headline from the game once the contest is done. Ep 567#567 - They're Back! Blue Devils Stomp 49ers

Whether you think it was the Jared McCain show or you were wowed at the performance of Jaylen Blakes, there was no question that Duke's backcourt brought their A-game against the Charlotte 49ers. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down all the positive signs we saw from the Blue Devils in their win against a pretty good Charlotte club. With Tyrese Proctor still nursing a sprained ankle, Duke needed other guys to step up. The week off from games seems to have fixed some things for Duke as several of the issues that have cropped up in recent games -- especially involving both offensive and defensive assists -- were much better in this contest. DBR Bites #29 - Manny Diaz takes over

The Duke Blue Devils have hired a head football coach (cue the blue smoke!) and Jason and Donald discuss the hire on a special DBR Bites Episode 29. Manny Diaz comes to Duke from Penn State, where he was the defensive coordinator for 2 years. Before that, he was the head coach at Miami. He also had coaching stints at Florida State, NC State, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Texas, and Louisiana Tech. We discuss what Manny Diaz brings to the table, starting with some incredible defenses. Penn State fans are very upset at losing Diaz to Duke, and it seems like players are excited to have him coming to campus. After the break, Donald breaks down some of the concerns for Manny Diaz that he followed closely in his stint as the Miami defensive coordinator and head coach. While he introduced the Turnover Chain, there were some lessons that were hopefully learned from his first head coaching stint. Overall, Jason and Donald are all in on hoping that Manny Diaz can continue the upward trajectory of the program and take it to the next level. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 566#566 - Changes coming against Charlotte

Duke has a big game this weekend, not because of the opponent (though this is a team to be respected) but because we begin to get to see what Duke looks like during the "Proctor is injured" part of the season. It appears Tyrese Proctor may be out for an extended period of time and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here to talk about the changes Duke may make to fill in for the star PG. You may be surprised at the names who they see getting extra playing time. The Podcast gang also break down what to expect from Duke's next opponent, the Charlotte 49ers, a team with some interesting players and that has shown it can play with the big boys. After a break, the DBR Podcast also dives into some non-Duke stuff... namely the decision by the college football playoff to leave Florida State out of the national semifinals. Eve Donald, who is no fan of the Seminoles, thinks FSU got hosed in this arrangement. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 565#565 - Wrecked down at Georgia Tech

The Duke Blue Devils had another poor showing yesterday against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and we discuss the first ACC loss on Episode 565. Duke lost 72-68 to Georgia Tech in a game that saw Duke fans lament the loss of Tyrese Proctor to an ankle injury early in the game and saw more poor shooting and stagnant offense. Jason Evans was in the building, so Jason and Donald start the discussion with his vantage point before we get into the headlines. There is some good to point out from this game, namely the play of Jeremy Roach as well as how the team once again fought to get back and have a chance to win. We also have some sound from the locker room as Jason was able to capture some of what Jeremy Roach and Jon Scheyer said after the game, and then we get into what went wrong with Duke Men’s Basketball in this game and how home bad patterns have formed on offense and defense. We discuss the Mark Mitchell technical foul that was a pivotal moment in the game, and we take a 30,000 foot view to hopefully ease some concerns that this season is already a wash. Ep 564#564 - ACC Season Begins

After a couple disappointing games, Duke seeks to get back on track this weekend in Atlanta against the Ga Tech Yellowjackets. The Duke Basketball Roundup says this will be a very interesting game because it is hard to tell what Georgia Tech will bring to the game. Will we see the Yellowjacket team that struggled badly a couple weeks ago or the one that surprised everyone by knocking off a ranked Mississippi State team this week in the ACC-SEC Challenge? Perhaps more importantly, which Duke team will show up and will the players be able to shed these early season doldrums? This edition of the podcast also dives into the newest addition to the Duke coaching staff and also looks at how Nina King is holding things together with the football program while she searches for a new head coach to replace Mike Elko. Ep 563#563 - Awful against Arkansas

This was not how the season was supposed to start for an experienced Blue Devil club, but they picked up their second loss (and their second poor game in a row) on Wednesday, falling at Arkansas to the Razorbacks of the SEC. The game displayed a myriad of potential problems for Duke, not least of which was the team's inability to finish on offense close to the basket. The Duke Basketball Roundup dives into the events of this important game including a real gap in what each team brought to the table in terms of rim protection and facilitating. With the ACC season about to start this weekend, the Roundup is your one stop to hear what Duke needs to fix (and fast) to get back to the top tier of the college basketball world. Ep 562#562 - What to expect when Duke plays Arkansas

They are calling this one of the biggest home games in Arkansas basketball history. That's what happens when Duke comes to town. The Blue Devils will be playing the Razorbacks at Bud Walton Arena on Wednesday night as part of the first-ever ACC-SEC Challenge and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here to give you all you need to know about what to expect. For Arkansas, the biggest question may be the health of their star player Trevon Mark, who went down with a nasty back injury in a game against UNC last week. He's the leader of a deep and very experienced Razorback club that has struggled thus far in big games and probably sees Duke as an opportunity to right the ship and restore their tarnished reputation this season. And, after the break, the podcast guys look ahead to the rest of the Challenge. There are some really interesting games that could show whether some ACC teams are contenders of pretenders this year. DBR Bites #28 - Elko Exits Duke

Under the cover of night, Mike Elko boarded a plane and put Durham in his rear-view mirror. After 2 years of great success at Duke, he is moving on to Texas A&M, one of the big power-players in college football. I guess this is what it feels like when Duke basketball swoops in and grabs a stud recruit at the last minute. The DBR Podcast gang (including a guest appearance by Sam Klein) discuss the impact of Elko's decision from both a rational and an emotional standpoint. The guys have plenty of thoughts on how this all went down, including comments on what Elko was apparently saying to Duke at the same time as he was talking to A&M. After a quick break, the podcast crew looks at some of the names being bandied about as the next head coach at Duke. We think this is a candidate search that needs to go very fast as Duke needs a leader in place to keep recruits and transfers committed to the program. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 561#561 - Duke overcomes Thanksgiving hangover

The Duke Blue Devils had a poor effort display against Southern Indiana, but still emerged with the win on Friday night. We recap the game on Episode 561. The Blue Devils had a Black Friday hangover, whether it was too much turkey or not enough intensity, and it showed against the Screaming Eagles. After breaking down all the headlines that listeners sent in, they get to the good and bad of this contest. They focus on some of the great “statless domination” that the team showed at the end of the 1st half, but they also reflect on how the game started, with everyone saying that they didn’t have the effort that Duke Basketball requires. We end with our play of the game, which was a dynamite hammer from Tyrese Proctor, and we give out our first Player of the Week honors of the season. We also hit the gridiron, where Duke Gang finished out their regular season with a solid victory over Pitt. Duke finishes the season 7-5 and now turns to where they will end up for their bowl game. Ep 560#560 - Doctor Proctor, gimme the W!

We’re back with Episode 560 to recap Duke’s win over LaSalle! The Blue Devils took out LaSalle 95-66 to move to 4-1 on the season, and Donald and Jason are here to recap the good and bad from the game. There were some great headlines, so they begin there, recapping some of the best that were sent in by others. Then, they get to the wealth of good things that happened in this game from Tyrese Proctor to Sean Stewart and the team defense. After the break, we deal with the things to improve from this game as the team wasn’t perfect on the evening. Ep 559#559 - Bison Beatdown

Duke had no trouble taking care of the Bucknell Bison, 90-60, but there were several interesting events in the game that need a deep analysis. That is what the Duke Basketball Roundup is all about. Jason and Donald sit down to discuss Flip's near-injury, Scheyer's first technical, Mitchell dominating in the paint, and McCain grabbing boards and raining threes. After talking about all the good and bad from this game, the DBR Podcast crew dives into the next opponent in the Blue Devil Challenge, La Salle. DBR Bites #26 - How to beat the Bison!

Let's be honest, Bucknell won't be as tough an opponent as Arizona or Michigan State but no one should be overlooked or dismissed so the Duke Basketball Roundup crew is here to look at what to expect from the Bison. They've got an excellent scorer on the wing who can rip down the nets with his 3 point stroke and a 7-footer on the inside who will present a challenge for Flip and the Duke big men. Ep 558#558 - Spankin' Sparty

The Duke Basketball Roundup is here with a recap of the Blue Devil's bounce-back win over Michigan State. Caleb Foster went bananas (get it?!?!) from long range in this one... and Duke needed it as some of our more reliable guards suffered from poor shooting performances. Jason and Donald are joined by Forbes.com college basketball writer Jeff Fedotin to talk about what went right and wrong in the United Center. In addition to gushing about Foster, everyone was impressed with the rebounding and the play of Ryan Young. Ep 557#557 - How to rebound against the Spartans

Duke Men’s Basketball heads to the United Center in Chicago tomorrow to take on Michigan State in the Champions Classic, and we preview the big game on Episode 557. Michigan State comes into this game with the same record as Duke: 1-1, with their loss courtesy of James Madison in the biggest upset in college basketball in the first week of the season. Jason and Donald preview what the Spartans can do well and what they have struggled with on the short season. They then take a look at the rest of the ACC, and the conference’s struggles make this game a bit more important. After the break, we switch to the gridiron, where Duke fell in a close game to UNC in 2OT. However, there were a couple controversial calls that once again changed the trajectory of the game. After a brief discussion of the game, the conversation shifts to the reports that Texas A&M have let Jimbo Fisher go, and lots of people list Mike Elko as a top candidate to replace him. Jason and Donald talk about the reports and whether they think he will stay in Durham or move onto one of the big college jobs that are either currently open or could be open by season’s end. Ep 556#556 - First Loss! What Happened Against Arizona?

The Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the good and the bad from the Blue Devils' heavyweight matchup with the Arizona Wildcats. It was a tough, back-and-forth battle that put several Duke weaknesses on stark display. The starters suffered from poor shooting early and Arizona really dominated the boards, especially in the first half. When Duke turned to what was expected to be a deep bench, the guys who came in failed to provide a meaningful lift. But, nothing we saw rises to the level of an unfixable problem. The big question for Duke moving forward is, will they learn from this game and transform into a better team? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 555#555 - Welcoming the Wildcats

The Duke Blue Devils welcome the Arizona Wildcats to Cameron on Friday night, and we preview the big game on Episode 555! It’s an early season matchup between two highly ranked teams, and to help us preview the Wildcats, we welcome Brian Pedersen of Arizona Desert Swarm to the show. Brian helps us understand the Arizona team that is coming to Cameron, from the players we know like Caleb Love to guys we may be unfamiliar with, like Oumar Ballo. Arizona’s a tall team with a lot of muscle, and Brian really helps Duke fans know what to expect when the two teams hit the floor. Jason and Donald then take the time to preview what they want to see from Duke in this matchup. They discuss rebounding, guard play, rotations, and of course, the hope that “Vintage Cameron” is alive on Friday night. It’s going to be a really fun game that we can’t wait to watch, and this preview will help get you ready! Make sure you’re following us! Ep 554#554 - Duke Dunks Dartmouth

If you had guessed that Jalen Blakes and Spencer Hubbard would arguably play bigger roles in Duke's season opening victory than Sean Stewart and TJ Power, go to the prize window to collect your reward. The Duke Basketball Roundup has plenty to talk about in their recap of Duke's impressive win over the Dartmouth Big Green and it all begins with the impressive display of depth from Jon Scheyer's squad. Duke used a combination of withering defensive pressure and smart offensive execution to pull away from Dartmouth around the middle of the first half and then coasted to victory. The DBR podcast crew of Jason and Donald are joined by a special guest -- former Chronicle Digital Sports editor Scott Rich -- for this recap of the game. In addition to a deep dive into the Duke win, they also look at how the rest of the ACC did on college basketball's opening night including a close call for Louisville and several impressive wins where ACC teams showed no trouble clearly the 90 or even 100 point marks. Ep 552#552 - Duke awaits the Big Green

The basketball season is just a few sleeps away from beginning, and we get started with the previews on Episode 552! The Duke Blue Devils host the Dartmouth Big Green on Monday night in the season opener for men’s basketball. Jason and Donald begin with a preview of the Big Green, giving you some names to watch for and how Dartmouth generally plays. It’s been a long time since Dartmouth played a top 5 opponent. We also give a quick look at how you might see Duke line up on Monday night. After the break, Duke Gang is bowl bound! Duke grinded out a 24-21 win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, and we discuss the play of Grayson Loftis, how long Riley Leonard might be out, and we salute the team for how they came back so many times and battled adversity to get that crucial 6th win on the season. Ep 551#551 - How did Duke look in their exhibition game?

It was our first peek at the 2023-24 Blue Devils in a (sorta) real game as Duke took on UNC-Pembroke last night in Cameron. Though it was just an exhibition against an outmanned DII school, we learned a lot about how the early rotations look for Jon Scheyer's club and we are starting to see what the new faces on the team are capable of achieving. The Duke Basketball Roundup had a bunch of takeaways from the game starting with this one... Jared McCain looks like the real deal, an elite scorer who can get his shot (and to the FT line) any time he wants. After a full breakdown of the game, the DBR Podcast crew also looks ahead to the next recruiting announcement on the horizon -- 5-star big man Patrick Ngongba will announce his school of choice on Saturday and there are a lot of signs that say he will be picking Duke. Finally, Jason and Donald take a moment to reflect on the career and legacy of Bobby Knight, the General, a man who had a profound influence on the entire college basketball world, and especially on Duke's own Coach K. Ep 550#550 - Still flipping out over Flagg

Whew, it has been a busy few days for the Duke Basketball Roundup but the guys are still gushing over the decision by Cooper Flagg to come to Duke next year. Make no mistake, this kid is a generational talent and the podcast gang has some stats and comparisons that will help all of you understand what it means that he will be playing in Cameron next season. After the break, Jason and Donald turn to the future of ACC football. The conference has unveiled the schedule for the next several years and the guys have some thoughts about what works and what doesn't for the Blue Devils and Mike Elko. Lastly, we go outside of Duke but inside the conference to talk about an historic basketball power that has fallen on some really tough times lately. What is the future of Louisville basketball? Oh, and wait until you hear about the Duke connection to a little known player from Flagler College who put a scare into big bad Florida State over the weekend! Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 549#549 - Sam Klein says farewell to the DBR Podcast

The Duke Basketball Roundup is getting a little bit smaller. Longtime co-host Sam Klein announces he is leaving the pod, though he promises to still show up every now and then when the mood (or the news) suits him. This episode features Sam reflecting on the 9 years he has been alongside Jason and Donald on this little experiment that has so far begat well over 500 episodes. The simple truth is that Sam was always the heart and the humor of the DBR Podcast and there is no way to replace him. Donald and Jason will carry on, with a rotating series of occasional guest-hosts who all will pale in comparison to Sam. Ep 548#548 - Emergency Pod COOPER FLAGG TO DUKE!!

So, this is a crazy episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup. About 31 minutes into the podcast, we found out -- LIVE -- that super-recruit Cooper Flagg had committed to Duke. You get to hear the guys react in real-time to this major piece of recruiting news that sets up the 2024-25 Blue Devils to be one of the best teams in the land. Flagg is considered a "generational talent," and may be the best defensive wing we have seen at Duke in many years. Meanwhile, the beginning of the podcast features Jason, Sam, and Donald talking about the Preseason ACC rankings and the All-ACC teams. Plenty of Blue Devils show up on the lists including Flip, Proctor, McCain, and Foster. Oh, and the guys also talk about Duke's secret scrimmage with Villanova on Saturday. News about that event has been hard to come by but the Roundup has some sources who told us a bit about what happened. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 547#547 - Preseason All American Ratatouille!

There is a ton of topics to discuss on a loaded Episode 547, so we put several of them in the pot and start stirring! Kyle Filipowski was named a 1st team preseason All American, and Jason and Donald discuss what a cool honor it is for the sophomore big man. It also brings some more expectations, and we think Flip is ready to rise to the challenge. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips had some comments during ACC Media Day about the logistics that will face Cal, Stanford, and SMU when they enter the conference next year. He also mentioned that if it were up to him, the ACC Tournament wouldn’t have all 18 teams competing. That’s a topic that has to be discussed in full. The 2023-24 NBA season kicked off last night, and there are 24 Duke Blue Devils on the rosters of 18 teams. We discuss who has moved in the offseason and who we’re looking forward to watching at the next level. After the break, Duke Football will take on the Louisville Cardinals on the road on Saturday in another big ACC game. We investigate what Duke will need to do in order to get back on track. Finally, we’re waiting for some recruiting news to drop with Cooper Flagg, Pat Ngongba, and VJ Edgecombe. We hope to hear something soon, but no we are not going to jinx anything! Ep 546#546 - A magical Countdown to Craziness!

It was a busy weekend for Duke Blue Devils Athletics, so we take some time on Episode 546 to discuss the magic that was Countdown to Craziness as well as Duke Football’s tough loss to Florida State. First, Sam’s voice is nearly gone from his fun weekend, so he gives his quick takes on both Countdown and the football game before he departs, leaving Donald and Jason to discuss both in depth. We start with Countdown, where Donald kicks off by mentioning Duke Women’s Basketball’s performance and showing them some love as well as Jon Scheyer inking a new contract to remain at Duke for a long time. Then, the two get into Duke Men’s Basketball, starting with the player intros and then the performance of the team. They analyze every player on the team, from All American Christian Reeves to Jaylen Blakes. It was a fun night in Cameron and it’s time to officially get excited about our team! After the break, Duke Football suffered a tough loss to the Florida State Seminoles on Saturday night. Donald and Jason discuss some of the good and bad and of course describe the big turning point in the game: Riley Leonard aggravating his ankle injury. There’s a quick discussion on the game as well as whether each believe Riley Leonard should be rested against Louisville. When you’re done with this episode, you’re probably gonna be thinking “Hey, these guys didn’t mention that C—” STOP RIGHT THERE! Stay for the end credits to get some more discussion! Ep 545#545 - Scooping how to smash the Seminoles

We’re back in your feeds already because on Saturday night, Duke Football has a big, big game. We preview the matchup with the #4 Florida State Seminoles on Episode 545. Duke enters the game as the #16 team in the AP poll, but they’re facing their toughest test of the season as they travel to Tallahassee to take on the Noles. FSU is 6-0, tops in the ACC, and are thinking playoff as they host the Blue Devils for their homecoming game. Jason and Donald are back to preview what they hope to see on Saturday night from the Blue Devils. After the break, we welcome Tim Alumbaugh from Tomahawk Nation, our sibling FSU podcast over at the Fans First Sports Network. Tim and Donald go through the FSU team in depth, with Tim providing some insight on what makes the Seminoles so good and where Duke might have an advantage as they attempt the upset. Ep 544#544 - Start the Countdown!

The Duke Basketball Roundup is starting to get busy with our first football/basketball weekend of the year, so on Episode 544, we have our preview of Countdown to Craziness! Duke Men’s Basketball will take to Coach K Court for the first time in front of a packed Cameron tomorrow night for Countdown to Craziness, and Jason and Donald discuss what they are most looking forward to seeing. Jason begins by saying he’s looking forward to...the refs?! With new rules on charges in effect, he’s looking to see how refs apply that moving forward. We get to the actual event and the focus will be on some of the dancing and the introduction of the personalities on the team. Talk then shifts to Caleb Foster and his performance in the “uncut” highlights from Duke’s most recent scrimmage. Foster looked great in the video, and Jason is excited to see more of him when they take the floor tomorrow night. After the break, Coach K dropped by The Brotherhood Podcast to chat with Ryan Young on life after coaching Duke Basketball. It was an amazing episode where the GOAT spoke on how much joy he has doing the things he loves to do, from spending time with his family to all of his philanthropic efforts and serving as an ambassador for Duke. He also speaks frankly about conference realignment, NIL, and the inability for the NCAA and ACC to lead in securing the future of college basketball. It’s well worth a listen! Ep 543#543 - We're Number 2!! Preseason rankings are out

Two of the most watched preseason polls came out today -- the Associated Press and KenPom. The Blue Devils check in at #2 (to Kansas) in the AP poll but are a bit lower, #9, in Ken Pomeroy's initial rankings. Of course, none of this will really matter very much once the actual games start being played, but that won't stop the Duke Basketball Roundup from obsessing over these polls and dissecting every aspect of them... including expectations for the rest of the ACC (this just in, the conference is getting very little respect). After the break, the DBR Podcast dives into the football game against NC State, a 24-3 victory for dear old Duke. While it may not have been the most impressive offensive display, the podcast crew is full of praise for the Duke D, which is making a case as one of the best defensive units in the entire college football universe. Ep 541#541 - A look ahead to NC State

The impressive Duke football team gets back in action this weekend... and star QB Riley Leonard might actually play. The Duke Basketball Roundup team are thrilled with that report and they use it as a launching off point to discuss the "backyard brawl" coming up against NC State. Duke has visions of big things this season and need to take care of business against a decent Wolfpack team. After the break, Jason, Donald, and Sam also get into a quick chats about a series of other stories... there's Mike Elko's profile in The Athletic, Duke and St. John's maybe getting ready to play at Arthur Ashe Stadium, Kansas basketball getting in trouble with the NCAA (not!), and news that one of the most coveted basketball recruits around has decided to move up a year and put himself in the same class as Cameron Boozer. Ep 540#540 - Reviewing the "Raw Uncut" scrimmage video

The Duke Basketball Roundup is back to do what it does best on Episode 540: overanalyze scrimmage video! First off, Sam’s back from working too hard, so Donald and Jason give him the floor to put a bow on the Duke-Notre Dame game and give his thoughts. Then, we move to the raw uncut. Duke Men’s Basketball released a 9 minute scrimmage video from and intrasquad scrimmage it had last weekend with ACC officials. It’s time to overanalyze, y’all. First, we discuss Kyle Filipowski and TJ Power and how good they looked. Could TJ Power challenge for that 5th starting spot? We then move to the guards, discussing the competition for playing time between Jeremy Roach, Tyrese Proctor, Jared McCain, and Caleb Foster. It’s going to be a good one that only makes the team better. After the break, we discuss Christian Reeves and how he looked great in the 2nd half of the video. Will he be the #1 pick in the NBA Draft? Will he get off the bench for Duke this season? Two questions that must be answered. We cover the rest of the team and how each player in the video looked as we round out the raw uncut. Finally, the transfer portal season has shortened just a bit, from 60 days to 45 days. We discuss what that means for college basketball (and football) and what it means for the players who decide to switch schools. Make sure you’re following us! After the break, the focus turns back to basketball with word that Jon Scheyer has named his 3 captains for the upcoming season... 2 of those names were expected, but one of them was a bit of a surprise. Ep 538#538 - Preparing to Fight the Irish

The Duke Basketball Football Roundup is here with Episode 538 as we do an extensive preview of Duke Football’s huge game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish! Jason and Donald begin the show by discussing the fact that for the first time, the football College Gameday show will be on Duke’s campus. We hope that the football team and the fans embrace the moment that’s upon us...we’re the center of the college football world, if only for a day. Impress! We then begin our preview with an interview with Hayden Adams from One Foot Down, the Notre Dame SB Nation blog. Hayden helps us take an in depth look at the Fighting Irish, first discussing the aftermath of their loss to Ohio State last weekend and then focusing on both sides of the football. Hayden tells us about some of the players that Duke should focus on when they take the field on Saturday. Hayden then ends with a few predictions. After the break, Jason and Donald react to Hayden’s thoughts on Notre Dame and give some of the keys to the game for Duke. Of course, we end with predictions, but not just on scores. We discuss which headgear we think Lee Corso will pick as well as who we would like to see as the celebrity guest picker on Saturday morning. DBR Bites #25 - Kon Kneuppel is a Blue Devil!!

Thursday night, Duke Basketball received a surprise commitment from Class of 2024 star Kon Kneuppel, and we had to jump on to react to it on DBR Bites Episode 25! Kneuppel’s commitment was way out of left field, to the point where Duke’s “Another One” video that they post with a commitment didn’t come for quite some time. But, Duke fans should be very excited about landing the best shooter in the Class of 2024 to add to a class that is already one of the best in college basketball and loaded with supreme shooters. After the break, we break down some stats from Kneuppel’s play on the EYBL circuit, and we take a deep dive into the Kneuppel family tree and their basketball pedigree (we’re taking you back to the Gus Macker, folks).
