#489 - Close Call Against Notre Dame
Jason, Sam, and Donald are having way too much fun on the latest episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast. Before they can even get to their recap of what worked and what didn't against Notre Dame, they talk about what it was like having Coach K back in Cameron. Was his seat in the right place and what did he think of watching two of his assistant coaches go at it on opposite benches? After dispelling with that, the podcast crew breaks down Duke's closer than expected victory over the Fighting Irish (and an unconscious Dane Goodwin), including that clutch 3 by Mark Mitchell. Donald Wine was in Cameron for the game and he tells us everything he saw from press row while also letting us in on his post-game conversation with Jon Scheyer. And, beforfe the guys leave, they have a challenge for all of you... they will soon need a (slightly) new name for the DBR Podcast. The emailbox is open for suggestions! DBR Bites #11 - Brey’s last visit
The podcast is back to preview Duke's upcoming home game against Mike Brey's Notre Dame team, which has been one of the most disappointing in the ACC this season. Brey's final trip to Cameron should be a good opportunity for Duke to right the ship after two tough road losses last week. As we dive into the Irish, we're somewhat flummoxed at their underperformance this season given their experience and prior ACC success. Freshman JJ Starling hasn't performed to expectations, having been removed from the starting lineup recently, and Notre Dame is having a hard time stopping opponents from scoring, despite a relatively slow tempo. If you'll be at the game on Tuesday, stop into Devil's Krafthouse beforehand to say hi to Donald Wine! We also have to spend a few minutes on the Super Bowl, but you probably didn't come here for that. Enjoy it anyway, and whether you liked it or not, stay in touch with the show at dbrpodcast at gmail.com. Learn more about your ad choices. #488 - Hoo hired these officials?
You saw it, you know what we're going to say. The officiating in the Duke-UVA game in Charlottesville left something to be desired for your Duke Basketball Report Podcast hosts, to say the least. Duke fought through Kyle Filipowski's worst performance of the season to be tied with the Hoos with 1.2 seconds left and the ball out of bounds, leaving Flip a clear lane to the basket for a lay-up at the buzzer, when he was apparently fouled but not really by multiple UVA defenders. The headlines from this game are seemingless endless, but in addition to the officiating, we have to highlight some of Duke's successes in this game, hanging tough with a UVA team that has been the best in the conference this season, even though UVA forced a season-high 22 turnovers from the Blue Devils. We're excited to see how Duke uses its good from this game down the stretch in the ACC. As for the bad, the podcast team are collectively hoping that this is a blip for Flip, as Duke will need him to be successful in the postseason. We have a unanimous and unlikely player of the week selection, and we will be back soon to preview the Notre Dame game on Tuesday. Until then, keep the emails coming to dbrpodcast at gmail.com! DBR Bites #10 - Trade Show
The NBA trade deadline came and went on Thursday... and speaking of comings and goings, several Dukies in the NBA found themselves in a different uniform once the deadline had passed. In the latest edition of DBR Bites, Jason and Donald break down what happened as Mason Plumlee, Luke Kennard, and Cam Reddish each got dealt to a new club and what their prospects for playing time are in their new homes. Plus, we look at what the deadline deals mean for the future of rookie Mark Williams, who may suddenly find himself in the starting lineup for the Charlotte Hornets. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #9 - Time to meet the Wahoos
The Duke Blue Devils head to Charlottesville on Saturday to take on the Virginia Cavaliers. It’s a huge game against one of the best teams in the country, and we preview the contest on DBR Bites 9. Virginia has a ton of seniors and juniors that Duke fans should already be familiar with, and this preview shows that UVA continues to do what they normally do successfully: slow down the tempo while remaining incredible efficiency on offense and defense. Their Pack Line defense causes a lot of turnovers and frustration, so Duke has their work cut out for them. Experience will be a factor, and Duke will need to try and speed up the tempo to get more possessions. Sam and Donald break it all down and give fans the scoop on what Duke needs to get back on track Saturday afternoon. We will be back this weekend to recap the game, and let’s hope Duke comes out with fire and desire. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #8 - Grant Hill & 9th Wonder discuss Duke and Black culture
The other day, a fascinating interview between Grant Hill and legendary hip hop producer (and Duke professor) 9th Wonder came out in Slam Magazine that discussed the intersection of Duke Basketball and Black culture. Sam and Donald jump on to discuss it all on DBR Bites Episode 8. Grant Hill, interviewed by 9th Wonder, details what it was like for him when he was recruited by teams like the Georgetown Hoyas that had way more cred in the Black community than the Duke Blue Devils. However, Hill describes how Black culture intersected with Duke Basketball and how some of the players on the team embraced the culture and hip hop music to bring the team together. Sam and Donald break down the interview and key elements of Hill and 9th’s discussion, with Donald including some of his experiences that don’t make the interview’s final cut. It’s a great discussion to carry through the middle of the week! We will be back tomorrow to preview the big game on Saturday against the Virginia Cavaliers. Learn more about your ad choices. #487 - Hurricanes humble hungover Blue Devils
Well, that one wasn’t fun. What went wrong down in Coral Gables last night for the Duke Blue Devils? We discuss it all on Episode 487. Duke got humbled by the Miami Hurricanes, and it was clear from the very beginning that the energy wasn’t there. Sam Klein was in the building for the game, so we open with his observations and headlines before we get to the good. Despite the blowout loss, there was some good things to come out of last night. Sam specifically has some positive thoughts about how Jon Scheyer did his rotations last night, and we had a 10-5-5 performance from Dereck Lively that needs to be talked about. We also get into the NET rankings and how this loss actually might have helped Duke in that all-important metric. After the break, we get into the bad, and there’s a lot to be discussed. Donald starts with the lack of energy in the Duke uniforms on the floor and how his prediction about the game ended up becoming a harsh reality. There are several points to be made about how the team played as well as the details being largely missing on the night. We end with more talk about the NET and what Duke has to look forward to over the final 7 games of the regular season, and we actually have a couple favorite plays. We will have a couple of DBR Bites very soon, so check your feed over the next couple of days for more Duke discussions as we get ready for UVA this weekend. Learn more about your ad choices. #486 - Deep dive into thrashing UNC
With a full night's sleep under their belt, the Duke Basketball Report podcast crew is back at it with more on the victory over UNC. As you already know, the guys were wowed with the play of Derek Lively and they have the stats and anecdotes to back it up today. Plus, they go even deeper on the stellar play of Jeremy Roach and Tyrese Proctor, who seemed to be in control on both ends of the floor. As always, it isn't all dessert, the podcast delivers some vegetables in the form of things Duke still needs to work on, such as bench production and more of an offensive game from Mark Mitchell. And, before they go, the podcast crew looks ahead to another big, big game -- Monday night in Miami. The ACC standings are very bunched at the top and a win in this contest would put Duke right in the heart of the race. Learn more about your ad choices. #485 - Carolina has gone to Hell!!
Instant reaction, that is what you all want at this moment, right? The DBR podcast hosts hop on to give their first thoughts just moments after Duke's thrilling victory over the hated Carolina Tarheels. Sam and Jason are in their home bases, but Donald was at the game and gives us a report from the center of West Campus, where the bonfire is burning in all its glory. The guys quickly talk about the revelation that was Derek Lively and cannot stop praising the phenomenal Duke defense in this game. We also love the fact that Duke put the ball in the hands of its most experienced player, Jeremy Roach, down the stretch while Carolina turned to Leaky Black and Pete Nance for their big shots... score one for Jon Scheyer over Hubert Davis. The DBR Podcast will have much more on Sunday on this big game, but for now, it is enough to enjoy the guys chanting GTHC over and over again! Learn more about your ad choices. #484 - GTHC: The Preview!
You know what time it is. The Duke Blue Devils take on the North Carolina Tar Heels Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and on Episode 484, you will get the biggest and best preview that you will find anywhere! Duke comes in fresh off a win against Wake Forest, but UNC enter fresh off a home loss last night to Pitt. Still, it won’t matter in the biggest rivalry in college basketball, as both these teams look to hit the ground running with a lot of energy. The preview starts with how UNC has done over the course of the season as well as the ACC. We discuss where they were at the start of the season - at the top - and how they crashed out of the top 25 to where they are now. We get into some of the key things that UNC shows on the eye test before we discuss some of the players that Duke fans should already know. Finally, we get into the metrics and some of the intangibles that Duke will need to bring to the table to win on Saturday. Donald will be in the building with 9,314 others, and Cameron will be in top form. Can Duke ride that intensity to a win over their archrivals? Learn more about your ad choices. #483 - Down go the Deacs
The Duke Basketball Report podcast is here with a breakdown of what worked and what didn't as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons visited Cameron Indoor. There was plenty to like, starting with Jeremy Roach's first half, Tyrese Proctor draining some threes, and Derek Lively blocking shots while barely standing on his tiptoes. But, there was also lots of concerning stuff including the anemic play of most of Duke's bench, Mark Mitchell's ongoing offensive struggles, and Duke's inability to control Wake star Tyree Appleby. Oh, and then there was the meaningless final 30 seconds of the game, when Duke had it all salted away, but allowed Wake to make the score misleadingly close. Believe it or not, those seconds could have an actual impact on how Duke is perceived by the NCAA Tournament selection committee. The DBR podcast has all the details... as well as some amusing conversations about what the computer algorithms are telling us to watch on TV and YouTube. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #7 - 2023 Duke Football schedule released!
Elko Ball is back! The 2023 Duke Football schedule was released last night, and Sam and Donald jump on early in the morning to discuss what it looks like on DBR Bites Episode 7. Duke’s got a pretty loaded schedule this year, with 9 opponents on the schedule having played in bowl games last season. It starts with a Labor Day matchup against Clemson, and the schedule doesn’t get any easier from there. Notre Dame comes to town on September 30th, and the back half of the schedule has two sets of back-to-back road trips. Duke travels to Florida State and Louisville, and they have a Thursday night game at home against Wake Forest 9 days before the big game down in Chapel Hill on Veterans Day. Sam and Donald discuss the ins and outs of this schedule and make their early picks for most important game of the season. Finally, Kyle Filipowski was named on the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list last night. We briefly discuss this honor, which is full of upperclassmen. It’s a testament to the season that Flip has had thus far for Duke. We’ll be back tomorrow after the Wake Forest game to recap that. DBR Bites #6 - Welcoming Wake Forest back to town
Last time the Duke Blue Devils played Wake Forest, it was a rough outing in what was the first bad loss of the season. Duke is hoping to avenge that loss when they welcome Wake Forest back to Cameron tomorrow night, and this DBR Bites Episode 6 is here to preview the matchup. Jason and Donald first give an update on the status of Dariq Whitehead’s injured leg. He’s not completely ruled out for tomorrow, so we discuss whether we think we’ll see the star freshman return to the court. We then get into what Wake has done since then, with a couple of tough losses and one pretty big win. Wake had some players have some big time performances a month ago in Winston-Salem, and Duke has to shut them down. Duke’s also been shooting a lot better lately, and those trends make this an intriguing battle. We will be back at some point after the game to provide a full recap. There’s another game later this week, but we focus for now on this big one right in front of us. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. #482 - Duke Doubles Ga. Tech
Well, that was certainly a fun day at the office for the Duke Blue Devils as they curb-stomped Georgia Tech by a score of 86-43. DBR Podcast co-host Jason Evans was in attendance at the game to provide a lot of perspective on things he saw that were not available to folks who were watching on TV. Obviously, this is the kind of game where Jason, Sam, and Donald are going to see a lot to enjoy including stellar play from Derek Lively, Jeremy Roach, Tyreese Proctor, and... well... pretty much everyone who put on a Duke uniform on this day. The guys especially enjoyed the play of the big men controlling the middle and the stellar passing that repeatedly led to easy shots. Oh, and we had a Jaden Schutt sighting too as Duke's outside shooting specialist made an early game appearance and the podcast crew spoke to Jon Scheyer about his decision to move Schutt into the more regular rotation. DBR Bites #5 - Whitehead, All-Stars, Brey, & Bob Harris
DBR Bites episode #5 has a little something for everyone as we give you quick hits on a number of interesting topics. We begin with the news that Dariq Whitehead isn't as badly hurt as feared and the podcast guys talk a bit about who may get more playing time while Whitehead is sidelined. After that, the podcast ventures into the big leagues as we honor the three Dukies just named as NBA All-Star game starters. It is news that sends us into the record books to try to find colleges that have produced as many elite basketball players as Duke has recently. From there, the podcast delves into the recent news that Mike Brey is stepping down at Notre Dame. We reflect on his career and talk about what could be causing so many coaching giants to call is quits recently. And we could not go without wishing the best to Bob Harris and his family following news that he is suffering from Alzheimer's. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #4 - Ga Tech & McDonald’s
Duke goes on the road to Atlanta this weekend and the DBR Podcast crew is here with a preview of what to expect against Georgia Tech. The Yellowjackets are a shadow of the team that won the ACC title a couple years ago but Duke is dealing with injuries and a lot of uncertainty coming off the loss to Virginia Tech. Plus, this Duke club has struggled mightily on the road this season. The podcast guys dive into some of the home/road splits to identify what Duke has done wrong away from the friendly confines of Cameron Indoor Stadium. After the break. the podcast dives into the McDonald's All-American game selections. Three Dukies made the cut and the pod guys discuss which one of them they are most eager to see in action. They also spend a little bit of time talking about one of the most famous recruits of all time, Lebron James Jr., and what his recruitment looks like. Oh, and one final note... at th request of many DBR Podcast listeners, co-host Jason Evans has agreed to a meet-up with fans of the pod prior to the Ga Tech game. But, you will just have to listen to this episode to hear where Jason will be. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. #481 - Va Tech punches Duke in the throat
Well, that was no fun. Virginia Tech, a team that has played poorly for the entire ACC season, suddenly found their mojo just in time for Duke to come to town. The Hokies went wild from long range and toppled Duke 78-75. The DBR podcast crew is here to break all of it down, starting to the controversial decision by the refs to say, "I didn't see nothing" when Kyle Filipowski got punched in the throat by Va Tech's MJ Collins. The final result overshadowed what was another stellar game from Flip, as he continues his double-double tear and shows that he can be a real threat from the perimeter as well. They podcast guys also spend some time lamenting the injury to Dariq Whitehead. Though we don't know the extent of the injury at this time, it sure looked bad and could not have come at a worse time as it looked like Whitehead was finally starting to become the player we know he can be. The podcast wraps up with a little bit of humor, as we discuss some of the games we will be attending in the next few weeks and the fun activities surrounding those events. DBR Bites #3 - Traveling to Virginia Tech
After a narrow victory at home on Saturday against Miami, the Duke Blue Devils hit the road to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies tonight! Sam and Donald band together to give you a preview of the Hokies. The Hokies come with the ability to force teams into not moving the ball around, and their hope is to make shots and take you out of the game. We talk about what the Hokies have done well, despite their spiraling record, and where Duke may have a mismatch. This is a bit of a revenge game after the Hokies beat Duke in last season’s ACC Tournament final, but Duke will need to put together another good shooting game from beyond the arc if they want to win. Some of those players from that game are back, but Sam and Donald discuss how Duke can walk out of there with a win. We’ll be back very soon to recap tonight’s game. Go Duke! #480 - Roach returns
There is a medium-sized elephant in the room if you follow the news at SBNation and Vox Media, which is that the DBR Podcast might be undergoing some changes in the next month, but as of this publication, we know nothing more than to just keep plugging away with this program. Stay tuned! That said, this episode is focused on Duke's nailbiting victory against Miami at Cameron on Saturday, where Duke wins 68-66 in Jeremy Roach's return to the court from his toe injury. All three of us are floored by how smooth Roach looked on the court, and that's before we get to big plays by Dereck Lively II and Kyle Filipowski. Tyrese Proctor seems to be finding his shot, and Duke 's offense is starting to flow more as we get to the middle of ACC play. We're looking forward to seeing what fully operational Duke looks like this season, as Jaylen Blakes was limited by a nose injury and Mark Mitchell, Dariq Whitehead, and Ryan Young weren't up to their usual selves today. We will be back again before you know it, with a quick turnaround to a game in Blacksburg on Monday. Until then, stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail dot com! DBR Bites #2 - Schutt and the Bench
In the latest episode of DBR Bites, Jason and Sam hop on to talk about sharpshooting Jaden Schutt and whether he is likely to carve out any meaningful playing time for the Blue Devils this year. Jason took part in a press conference with Jon Scheyer earlier this week and asked about Schutt's prospects. We let all of you listen in as Coach Scheyer responds. Both Jason and Sam did their homework for this episode, looking back at Duke history to see whether this year's team is using the bench differently than Coach K did over the years. While it may feel like there is a bit more depth than usual, you will probably be surprised at the degree to which Scheyer differs from K. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #1 - How to weather the Hurricanes
There’s a big game in Cameron on Saturday, so on this first full DBR Bites episode, Donald is here to help you preview Duke’s game against the Miami Hurricanes. The Canes come in with a lot of momentum, but Donald breaks them down to the core. After talking about their record and key victories, he gets into what makes them flow on offense and how they try to contain you on defense. We discuss some of the players that you need to watch out for and what they can do on the offensive end. This team is one of the most efficient teams in the country on offense, so Duke will have its hands full trying to contain them. Duke also has some keys to victory, and we discuss that as we prepare for an important game. Bring the noise, Cameron! DBR Bites #0 - What are Bites?
Welcome to the brave new world of the DBR Podcast. Starting today, we debut a new edition of the podcast called DBR Bites. What are DBR Bites? They are bite-sized episodes, generally 10-15 minutes in length, that will be coming at you in between our longer podcasts where we dissect what happened in a game or deal with some other major news involving the Duke Blue Devil basketball team. Most episodes of DBR Bites will only feature one or two of the regular podcast crew, though this one features all three guys as they talk a bit about something that happened right at the end of the Duke-Clemson game. The Clemson fans stormed the court and Clemson coach Brad Brownell had some pointed words about it in his post-game news conference. Podcast co-host Jason Evans was there and he leads us on a discussion of what Brownell was really saying when he addressed the court storming. Learn more about your ad choices. #479 - Looking positively at the loss in Littlejohn
The Duke Blue Devils suffered a 72-64 loss to the Clemson Tigers yesterday at Littlejohn Coliseum. However, while the Blue Devils lost, there were certainly a lot of positive things that one could take away, and we discuss them on Episode 479. It’s Jason Evans’ birthday, so we seek to make this episode fun in his honor. Jason was also at the game, so he gives his his firsthand account of what it was like to be in the building for this one. We focus on some good performances by Kyle Filipowski and Tyrese Proctor as well as Dereck Lively starting to come along. For a loss, we spend a lot of time on the good, as Duke showed some fight in staying in the ballgame. After the break, we shift to what went wrong, namely the shooting. Jason gives us a soundbite from the postgame press conference where Jon Scheyer is candid about what comes next for Duke as well as his belief that a couple players are ready to break out. We also have brief discussions on whether Jaden Schutt could have helped off the bench as well as the notion by some fans that Scheyer’s calm persona means he doesn’t have any fire. The DBR Podcast will be back early this week to explain a new podcast format that we think will be great for you all as listeners. The idea will be releasing more episodes that can provide more timely content that will keep you entertained throughout the week. Look out for that explainer episode in the coming days! #478 - Another tough road game upcoming
Welcome back to the DBR Podcast, we are now in the era where we break up game previews from game recaps. Duke heads to Clemson this weekend for a huge ACC road game against Brad Brownell's squad, who are currently 6-0 and in first place in a competitive ACC. Donald gets us started with a recap of Clemson's season, which has featured some great ACC wins and a few decent non-conference games. Sam takes us through the Clemson roster, highlighted by a number of guys who have spent a lot of time in orange, a phenomenon Duke fans haven't been used to in recent years. Clemson's frontcourt, PJ Hall and Hunter Tyson, have excelled this season both on the boards and from beyond the arc. Jason wonders how Duke matches up against Clemson's offensive efficiency. After the break, we take a spin through some recent mock drafts from both The Athletic and Sports Illustrated, and we speculate about what guys like Dereck Lively II, Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor, and Mark Mitchell are thinking these days about their pro prospects. Do Duke's incoming recruits have any impact on these decisions? It's early, but always worth wondering. #477 - Duke’s comeback has us doing Flips!
What a comeback! The Duke Blue Devils picked it up in the 2nd half to storm back to beat the Pittsburgh Panthers Wednesday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The podcast crew had to jump on together soon after the final horn sounded to talk about it on Episode 477. Duke’s was led by offensive rebounding and several standout performances, notably Kyle Filipowski, Ryan Young, and Tyrese Proctor. However, many of the players had some standout moments, and we break them all down. The energy that the team had and the toughness they showed fueled their comeback from as much as 12 points down to win 77-69. After the break, we do get into some of things to improve upon, namely taking care of the basketball as well as the shooting woes. Those are things that the team need to get right before they head to Littlejohn Coliseum Saturday afternoon. The DBR Podcast crew will preview the Clemson game later this week. #476 - Preparing for the Panthers
The Duke Blue Devils have a big home game tomorrow night at Cameron Indoor Stadium when the Pittsburgh Panthers pay a visit in the only meeting between the two teams during the regular season. The DBR Podcast preview the game in Episode 476. Jason, Donald, and Sam take us through what to expect from the Pitt Panthers, from what they’ve done lately to some of their strengths and weaknesses. Pitt, who is tied for 2nd in the ACC standings, has been really good so far, and Jeff Capel has the team playing tough and with passion. Donald hones in on Pitt’s overall play, Jason gives us the metrics, and Sam tells us a few players to watch out for when the teams hit the floor tomorrow. After the break, we say goodbye to Sam, and Jason and Donald go through some of Duke’s shootings stats on the season. They aren’t very good, and their conference stats have not been great overall. Still, there’s room for improvement, and we focus on some comments head coach Jon Scheyer made in his press conference about social media negativity. We end by congratulating one of our listeners on her expert sleuthing on the whereabouts of a former Duke player. Continue to send us emails to DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com! #475 - Thriller in Boston
It wasn't easy but Duke finally got a road win, topping Boston College by 1 point in Chestnut Hill. The Duke Basketball Report podcast crew are here to break down everything that went right -- Duke built a 14 point lead in the second half -- and wrong -- only 1 basket by the Blue Devils in the final 10 minutes. There were flashes of great individual play by Ryan Young, Dariq Whitehead, and Mark Mitchell but this seems to be a Duke team that is still struggling to figure out roles and identify its go-to player. #474 - Duke gets Packed
The Duke Blue Devils had a basketball game last night in Raleigh against the NC State Wolfpack, and it was a terrible night for Duke. But yep, we still have to talk about it, and Jason and Donald do just that on Episode 474. Nothing went right for Duke on a night where they lost by 24 and was throughly beaten in almost every statistical and intangible category. Jason and Donald break down what exactly went wrong against NC State in detail, and there was a lot to review. They also step back a bit to discuss what the team needs to do overall to regroup and get victories on the road in the ACC. After the break, there’s another road trip coming up, this time to Chestnut Hill to take on Boston College. The Eagles have struggled lately, but they have done well at home and will be looking to knock off Duke. We discuss what Duke needs to do in order to beat BC and get that coveted road win. #473 - Young’s perfect game bests FSU
The Duke Blue Devils took care of business against the Florida State Seminoles, and we recap the big New Year’s Eve win on Episode 473! Duke’s Ryan Young had a perfect game from the field and the free throw line, and he led the charge for the Blue Devils. We also got great games from Jaylen Blakes and Dariq Whitehead, and the defense was on point in the team’s first game in 11 days. It was a great way to close out 2022, and Sam and Donald recap all the headlines, the good, and the bad. They also discuss their favorite plays and give out Player of the Week awards. After the break, the Blue Devils next travel down the road to Raleigh to take on the NC State Wolfpack. It’s always a road game that is tough and can trip you up, so we go through what NC State brings to the table. Energy and intensity always defines these matchups, and Duke will need to make sure there’s room on the bus to bring both to Raleigh on Wednesday night. We close with some kudos to the Duke Women’s Basketball team, who knocked off #6 NC State the other night and are 13-1 on the season so far! They have been playing some great basketball lately! #472 - Bowled Over, Elko’s Boys Notch Another Win
As 2022 wraps up, Duke football is reaching heights not seen in quite a while. Mike Elko's Blue Devils slapped around UCF to take home the Military Bowl Trophy. The DBR Podcast crew (some of it) was on hand to witness Duke's 9th win of the season in person. And as good as this season was, it sure seems like the team is primed for even more success in 2023. Plus, the Duke hoops guys are getting ready for another ACC contest, on New Year's Eve against Florida State. The Podcast is here to tell you this year's Seminoles bear little resemblance to the FSU teams that Leonard Hamilton has skippered to the top tier of the conference in recent years. And, we wrap it all up with a conversation about the new program to funnel money to players on the 2022-23 basketball team via NIL opportunities offered on The Brotherhood website. #471 - Reveille for the Military Bowl!
The Duke Blue Devils have a bowl game this week against the UCF Knights, our first bowl game in 4 years. So, the DBR Podcast crew previews the big game on Episode 471! For this UCF preview, they solicit a little help. Jeff Sharon & Kyle Nash from the Black & Gold Banneret, our SBN sister blog covering UCF sports, join us on this episode to break down their Knights and what makes them successful on the field. We focus on both sides of the ball, focusing on quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, who is dangerous on the ground as well as leading the offense. We also focus on UCF’s defense, and for us Blue Devils, we ask where Duke could have the advantage against the Knights in this ballgame. We end the interview with a quick look at UCF’s basketball program, led by Duke legend Johnny Dawkins. After the interview, the DBR crew recaps the interview and gives their own takes on what Duke needs to do in order to win on Wednesday. We end with some NBA talk, since the Christmas slate of games contained some awesome moments, including a couple of jaw dropping dunks that need to be discussed. We will be back after the bowl game to recap what happened and to get us ready for the final day of 2022, where Duke Basketball will be back in action against Florida State. #470 - Wake Up, Duke!!
It is no fun to recap a game like the discouraging contest against Wake Forest, but the Duke Basketball Report Podcast gang is here whether the news is good or bad. The autopsy report on Duke's 81-70 loss to Wake includes lethargic play, a bevy of missed three-pointers, and a defense that could not stop the Demon Deacons from getting into the lane. At least we have the spirited play of Jaylen Blakes to give us something to smile about coming out of this contest. But, ever the optimists, the podcast crew also gives you reason to not feel so bad about this loss as they recount some of the struggles other teams are going through surrounding the exam/Christmas break time. Some of the results are truly shocking. And, they close with a tip of the hat to Mike Elko as he signs an impressive class of recruits as the newest members of the Blue Devil football family. #469 - A break from the break
On this episode of the DBR Podcast, we are breaking down Duke's first road ACC game of the season, at Wake Forest on Tuesday night. Steve Forbes's squad is struggling at the end of conference play, with a recent blowout loss at Rutgers hanging over them. What will Duke look like after its exam break, and ahead of its longer Christmas break upcoming? We do not know if Jeremy Roach will play, but hoping that Duke may not need him. After the break, we have comments on a few stories around basketball and the NCAA. Chris Paul gets rare praise from DBR for his graduation from Winston Salem State University, Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker is taking over the NCAA, and we send regards to the family of Duke swimming and diving coach Dan Colella, who passed this week. We also have a spirited conversation about the potential for Coach K attending a Duke Basketball game. Where should he sit? Let us know what Donald should do in Oklahoma this week while he is in Texas by emailing us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and we will be back after the Wake game to tell you what happened. #468 - Assessing the season so far
The non-conference season is done. Duke has nothing but ACC games remaining. And the Duke Basketball Report Podcast crew thinks this is the perfect time to look back on the season so far to see how the Devils have done. So, they invited Brendan Marks of The Athletic to join them. He breaks down what we have seen from the team and how he expects them to continue to evolve. We also spend some time discussing the performance of Jon Scheyer as Duke's first new head coach in 4 decades and Mr. Marks is quite impressed with the job Coach J is doing so far. After a break, Brandan gives us his take on the rest of the ACC, which seems stronger at the top than it was a year ago... but also weaker at the bottom. Learn more about your ad choices. #467 - Five Freshman Starters
For the first time in Duke basketball history, the starting lineup featured five freshmen as the Blue Devils took on Maryland-Eastern Shore. How did it go? Well, Duke won the game easily, but it was a truly sloppy affair with lots of unforced turnovers. The DBR Podcast crew checks in with all the good, bad, and ugly from the contest including Jayden Schutt's coming out party and a few magical minutes from Dariq Whitehead. After the break, the guy each pick their player of the week and Sam proves he's just a little bit more clever than the other guys. And then, Jason gives us a tale of how several Dukies in the NBA made him some nice money gambling this weekend in Atlantic City. Remember, always bet with your head, not above it. #466 - Duke’s D turns MSG into a Block Party
The Duke Blue Devils took care of business last night against the Iowa Hawkeyes, winning 74-62 at the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. It may have been Duke’s best performance all season so far, and Jason and Donald are here to recap it on Episode 466. Duke’s defense paced the entire effort on the night, with the focus on how Mark Mitchell and Dariq Whitehead really kept All-American Kris Murray at bay for most of the evening. The rest of the defense showed up for the Blue Devils as well, keeping Iowa’s shooters under 40% and keeping them off the glass. On offense, we highlight Jeremy Roach’s stellar performance as well as Mark Mitchell adding 17 points. The kids were ready for the lights of the Garden! After the break, we preview Duke’s upcoming game against Maryland Eastern Shore. UMES is not a good team, led by the fact that they’re very short. Donald and Jason take you through some of what they’ve done already and what Duke needs to do to ensure this is a runaway victory. We end the show by discussing why Jaden Schutt has been largely absent from the floor so far this season, and stick around after the Duke Band plays us out for part of a thrilling movie conversation! #465 - Duke flies by Boston College
The Duke Blue Devils are 1-0 in the ACC after an easy win against the Boston College Eagles yesterday, and the DBR Podcast crew breaks down everything on Episode 465! Sam and Donald are present, while Jason’s only here for the first half of the show. After a quick movie discussion and a debate over weekends, we get into discussion of the 75-59 victory. We discuss the headlines as well as all the good that came from this game. Dereck Lively was all over the place, and his energy earns a lot of kudos. Tyrese Proctor is emerging as the primary point guard on offense, and Kyle Filipowski is embracing his role as the focal point. There was a lot of ball movement, and we also comment on Dariq Whitehead’s progress. There were a ton of good things to discuss in such an easy victory. We also get into the things that can improve, namely the rebounding and forcing more turnovers. We also do our favorite plays before we say goodbye to Jason. After the break, Sam and Donald are left to preview the Iowa Hawkeyes, who the Blue Devils will face in the Jimmy V Classic on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. They both discuss what Iowa has done and who to watch out for, namely Kris Murray. It should be a pretty even battle on Tuesday night. Finally, we close with some football news, as Duke will take on UCF in the Military Bowl on December 28th. We comment on that bowl game as well as congratulate Mike Elko on being named ACC Coach of the Year. The future is bright for Duke Football! #464 - Duke Bucks Ohio State!
The Duke Blue Devils hung an 81-72 victory on the Ohio State Buckeyes last night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, and the crew is here to recap all that happened on Episode 464! Duke rebounded from a weekend loss to Purdue in the PK85 tournament to face another Big Ten opponent. Donald returns to the podcast after a couple weeks abroad for the World Cup, and after getting caught up, Sam gives us the description of what it was like in Cameron at the game, from the Cameron Crazies doing a white out to the differences in production now that Jon Scheyer is the coach. We then get into the headlines, with some great submissions from our listeners (DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com if you want to send in your headlines after each game!). We get to the good, featuring some solid play down the stretch from the veteran players and the defense. We also touch on what Duke needs to improve as well as our favorite plays of the game. After the break, we preview Saturday’s ACC home opener against the Boston College Eagles. Boston College is a team that hasn’t done well so far on the season, and we go through who they’ve played, what the metrics say about them, and some of the key players on the team to watch out for when the two teams take the floor. The team will be back over the weekend to recap the BC game and get ready for Iowa in the Jimmy V Classic. Duke Football also will be in a bowl game! We should know where Duke will play at some point this weekend as well. Until then, continue to send us emails...we’ve enjoyed all the emails we’ve received from our listeners! #463 - Duke can’t scale Mt. Edey as Purdue down the Devils
Duke's big men looked small against Purdue's mountain of a man, Zach Edey. It would be easy to merely look at the impact Edey has on the game and say that was the reason Duke lost, but the Duke Basketball Report podcast crew dives a bit deeper to figure out what Duke needs to improve upon. The scoring droughts and the lack of perimeter shooting are major causes of concern as is the way Purdue dominated Duke on the boards. But, this is a young squad and they will take important lessons from this game. After the break, the podcast crew looks ahead to the first place Duke will get to apply those lessons, an ACC-Big Ten Challenge game against Ohio State. The Buckeyes present several interesting challenges and this will be a very important game for Duke to show they belong among the top teams in the land. And, before we are done, the podcast crew has some words about the remarkable regular season for the football Blue Devils who beat Wake Forest over the weekend and now await word of what bowl in which they will play. #462 - Two down, one to go at PK85
Duke had a successful and very suspenseful Thanksgiving and Black Friday out in Portland. Wins over Oregon St. and Xavier may have been largely expected, but did not come without several doses of drama. The story of each game was so different and the DBR Podcast guys are here to break it all down for you. First, came the Oregon State game, a contest Duke would not have won without the play of Ryan Young. Raise your hand if you thought those words would be spoken this season. Yeah, we thought not. Then was the game with Xavier, a contest in which Duke shot better but a high-quality opponent kept the game close anyway. Duke's defense was truly special down the stretch in both games and so the Devils find themselves in the PK85 championship against Purdue and the tallest player Duke is likely to face all season. #461 - Duke passes Bellarmine test, better competition awaits
Make no mistake about it, it takes courage for a blue blood like Duke to play a team like Bellarmine. With their endless passing and pump fakes, they can make even the most disciplined team look foolish at times. But, Duke's young team was up to the task, a testament to the hard work the coaches and players have been putting in. The Duke Basketball Report Podcast team breaks down what Duke did right and the few things that went wrong in this game. Then, after the break, they give you all you need to know about Duke's Thanksgiving weekend in Portland, Oregon. First up will be Oregon State, but the podcast gang is really excited about the second round matchup against Florida or Xavier, two teams who will present a real test to Duke's impressive big men. #460 - Duke Downs Delaware
Duke rides some impressive performances from the freshman class, especially Kyle Filipowski and Tyrese Proctor, to take down a pesky Delaware club that kept the game competitive for a lot longer than many had expected. But, Duke's height and depth eventually won the day in a game that may be most notable for being the debut of freshman phenom Dariq Whitehead. He gave us a tantalizing preview of things to comes as a guy who can get his shot any time he wants to. After the break, the DBR Podcast guys take a moment to preview Ballarmine, a truly unique opponents known as "the team that refuses to dribble." We also spend some time talking about the latest Duke football game, a strange contest with Pitt that featured pigeons, punts, and just a lot of unusual stuff. Oh, and we wrap it all up with a shout out to the excellent recruiting job being done by Kara Lawson and her staff. Learn more about your ad choices. #459 - Lessons learned from Kansas defeating Duke
Duke may have lost in the Champions Classic to Kansas, but the Duke Basketball Report Podcast crew is really excited about how Duke looked in this contest. Obviously, they are raving about Kyle "Mr. Double-Double" Filipowski but also saw a lot to like from several other freshmen who are not playing like this is just their third game in a college uniform. And, though there was a lot to like despite the L, the guys also discuss the problems from this game, including some rather controversial decisions by the referees (cue up a good little rant from Donald and Jason). After the break, the DBR Podcast looks across the ACC to examine the problems some of our conference rivals are having and what it means for Duke if the rest of the ACC is struggling in the non-conference season. #458 - An easy weekend
It was a great weekend to be a Blue Devil, from the basketball court to the gridiron. In basketball, Duke takes down USC Upstate after a quick burst from the otherwise overwhelmed Spartans, and on Saturday, the football team dominated Virginia Tech. We are back to talk about all of it. On the basketball front, we are giddy over Duke's defensive effort in this game, as well as Dereck Lively II's first appearance in a Duke uniform. Duke had standout performances from a number of players, but Jason needs to tell you in particular how excited he is about Jaylen Blakes's progress. We are a little worried about Tyrese Proctor's progress, but there is plenty of season left for him to get more comfortable. This week, Duke heads to Indianapolis for this year's Champions Classic, where they will play reigning champions Kansas. How will Duke handle Jalen Wilson? We can't wait to see. After the break, we get into Duke's seventh football victory, a ho-hum affair against the Hokies where Duke was undoubtedly the better team. What a time to be alive. We'll be back after the Kansas game, but until then, stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com! Learn more about your ad choices. The Duke Men’s Basketball Team finally open the 2022-23 season, and it’s a great debut not just for the many freshmen and transfers on the team, but also for head coach Jon Scheyer. We recap the good, the bad, and the favorites on Episode 456. The 71-44 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins was a great effort on both offense and defense. After dishing out the headlines, the crew recaps everything, starting with standout performances from players like Mark Mitchell and Jeremy Roach. Of course, we have to eat the veggies with some of the things to improve, and then we end with a new thing that we think we’re going to keep: favorite play of the game. Each of us nominate a couple of plays that we thought were worth the honors. After the break, we preview Friday’s matchup with the USC Upstate Spartans. With the season just underway, there’s not a lot of stats to review for the Spartans, but we dig deep to bring you the best analysis of what we can expect on Friday evening.
