The Duke Blue Devils have a big home game tomorrow night at Cameron Indoor Stadium when the Pittsburgh Panthers pay a visit in the only meeting between the two teams during the regular season. It is no fun to recap a game like the discouraging contest against Wake Forest, but the Duke Basketball Report Podcast gang is here whether the news is good or bad. The Duke Blue Devils took care of business last night against the Iowa Hawkeyes, winning 74-62 at the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. It may have been Duke’s best performance all season so far, and Jason and Donald are here to recap it on Episode 466. Duke’s defense paced the entire effort on the night, with the focus on how Mark Mitchell and Dariq Whitehead really kept All-American Kris Murray at bay for most of the evening. The rest of the defense showed up for the Blue Devils as well, keeping Iowa’s shooters under 40% and keeping them off the glass. Duke's big men looked small against Purdue's mountain of a man, Zach Edey. It would be easy to merely look at the impact Edey has on the game and say that was the reason Duke lost, but the Duke Basketball Report podcast crew dives a bit deeper to figure out what Duke needs to improve upon. Duke had a successful and very suspenseful Thanksgiving and Black Friday out in Portland. Wins over Oregon St. and Xavier may have been largely expected, but did not come without several doses of drama. It was a great weekend to be a Blue Devil, from the basketball court to the gridiron. In basketball, Duke takes down USC Upstate after a quick burst from the otherwise overwhelmed Spartans, and on Saturday, the football team dominated Virginia Tech. We are back to talk about all of it. On the basketball front, we are giddy over Duke's defensive effort in this game, as well as Dereck Lively II's first appearance in a Duke uniform. Basketball season, at long last, is upon us here at the DBR Podcast. We've now whet our appetites on 16 minutes of Blue-White game scrimmage during Countdown to Craziness, we've survived the collective horror at the small, elevated stage that all the players had to dance on Friday night, and we're ready to dive into all of it. On the game, we're most impressed with presumed redshirt big man Christian Reeves, but plenty of other new guys showed promise, including Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor, and Jacob Grandison. The crew is disappointed we didn't get to see stud freshmen Dereck Lively II and Dariq Whitehead, but it sounds like they will be back sooner than later. After some analysis of the various dance moves on display at Countdown, we dive into the football game, which was a stunning display in forcing turnovers, both by punched-out fumbles and interceptions. Duke has recovered nicely from recent losses to get to the precipice of bowl eligibility with four games left on the schedule and a bye week up next. Donald doesn't love seeing Duke his other alma mater, but Jason and Sam are thoroughly enjoying the moment. Here's something special. A loyal listener to The DBR Podcast attended a special private basketball practice inside Cameron Indoor Stadium last week and was allowed to videotape more than 20 minutes of the team scrimmaging. The ACC released it full conference schedule this week and you can bet that the DBR Podcast gang spent a good bit of time pouring over the sked to see who got a break and who got a tough assignment from the scheduling gods. The analysis, of course, begins with Duke's schedule. On this episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we start with Dariq Whitehead, who is expected to be one of Duke's best players this season, and who unfortunately went down with a broken foot last week. While we try to ward off the evil spirits that seem to haunt Duke Basketball players' lower extremities, we also try to find the silver lining in this news. Whitehead likely won't miss more than one or two conference games, and with the whole ACC season available for Whitehead to learn the offense better, he should be in great shape by February and March. The first summer scrimmage video is here for the Duke Blue Devils, and despite the fact it’s only 6.5 minutes long, we have to spend 4 times as long discussing it on Episode 434! Duke fans got their first glimpse at how the new team might play this season, and we love overanalyzing these videos. So, Donald, Jason, and Sam do just that, beginning with Jeremy Roach and the guards and moving onto the big men and the incoming freshmen.
