So, this is a crazy episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup. About 31 minutes into the podcast, we found out -- LIVE -- that super-recruit Cooper Flagg had committed to Duke. You get to hear the guys react in real-time to this major piece of recruiting news that sets up the 2024-25 Blue Devils to be one of the best teams in the land. Flagg is considered a "generational talent," and may be the best defensive wing we have seen at Duke in many years. Meanwhile, the beginning of the podcast features Jason, Sam, and Donald talking about the Preseason ACC rankings and the All-ACC teams. There is a ton of topics to discuss on a loaded Episode 547, so we put several of them in the pot and start stirring! Kyle Filipowski was named a 1st team preseason All American, and Jason and Donald discuss what a cool honor it is for the sophomore big man. It also brings some more expectations, and we think Flip is ready to rise to the challenge. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips had some comments during ACC Media Day about the logistics that will face Cal, Stanford, and SMU when they enter the conference next year. He also mentioned that if it were up to him, the ACC Tournament wouldn’t have all 18 teams competing. That’s a topic that has to be discussed in full. The 2023-24 NBA season kicked off last night, and there are 24 Duke Blue Devils on the rosters of 18 teams. We discuss who has moved in the offseason and who we’re looking forward to watching at the next level. It was a busy weekend for Duke Blue Devils Athletics, so we take some time on Episode 546 to discuss the magic that was Countdown to Craziness as well as Duke Football’s tough loss to Florida State. First, Sam’s voice is nearly gone from his fun weekend, so he gives his quick takes on both Countdown and the football game before he departs, leaving Donald and Jason to discuss both in depth. Two of the most watched preseason polls came out today -- the Associated Press and KenPom. The Blue Devils check in at #2 (to Kansas) in the AP poll but are a bit lower, #9, in Ken Pomeroy's initial rankings. Of course, none of this will really matter very much once the actual games start being played, but that won't stop the Duke Basketball Roundup from obsessing over these polls and dissecting every aspect of them... including expectations for the rest of the ACC (this just in, the conference is getting very little respect). The news was coming fast and furious on this Thursday, so the Duke Basketball Roundup team sat down to bring you all we have heard about the two breaking stories. First up, the big NIL event Duke was scheduled to hold in Chicago this weekend, an event that was going to bring in more than $100,000 for Duke's players, has been cancelled by the NCAA. While details are sketchy, the DBR podcast gang has speculation about why the NCAA squashed this fun fan event. We are back! It’s been a couple of weeks where due to work and travel we couldn’t get together, but now we have some things to talk about. Sam, Jason, and Donald are here to bring it to you on Episode 512! Duke lands a top 10 recruit in the Class of 2024 in Isaiah Evans, and we begin by discussing what he brings to the table. There’s a reason people call him Baby Ingram. We then use that to enter a discussion about Cooper Flagg and the potential for him to reclassify into the Class of 2024 to join Evans and Darren Harris. Next, the transfer portal seemed to be hot, with Duke considering several big men a couple weeks ago. Now, it seems the market has cooled off a bit, with Duke not landing anyone yet. We discuss whether that’s a good thing and if Duke feels confident about the players already on the roster. After the break, we get into the 2023-24 schedule, and Duke appears to be foregoing some of the more traditional early season tournaments to set up a multi-team event of their own. Except, this one would feature LaSalle, Bucknell, and Southern Indiana. We discuss the fact that while these teams are not going to excite any Duke fans, it could be part of filling out a non-conference schedule that will have some very big opponents. Finally, we take a few minutes to celebrate the life of Dick Groat, who passed away last Thursday at age 92. He was a legend in two sports, and is revered not just at Duke, but at Linktree! Wow, one of the biggest news hours in Duke history this morning as Kyle Filipowski announced he is running it back for his sophomore season at Duke and then, minutes later, superstar recruit Mackenzie Mgbako said he would be looking for a different school and not coming to Duke. We spend a couple of minutes going through the new name and some of the changes that are forthcoming to the show over the next week as we move to our new home on Podbean. The main highlight of the show isn’t us however...it’s the announcement that Dereck Lively has decided to depart Duke for the NBA Draft. Jason, Sam, and Donald reflect on the year that D-Live had for the Blue Devils and how they think he will carve out a terrific NBA career. We have our first departure to the NBA Draft, and we discuss it on Episode 508. Dariq Whitehead is leaving Duke for the NBA, and we are not surprised given his draft prognosis falling somewhere in the mid-to-late first round. We discuss what he brought to the table and where he could fit at the next level. There’s a nice discussion about the Dariq Whitehead that was expected when he arrived on Duke’s campus as well as how he evolved with the injuries he suffered in the preseason and during the regular season. We’re all in agreement that his workouts will determine where he ends up in the draft. After the break, we discuss the McDonald’s All American games that took place last night in Houston. Duke had 3 recruits in the Boys Game - Sean Stewart, Jared McCain, and Mackenzie Mgbako - and Jadyn Donovan in the Girls Game. We're all still reeling from the abrupt end to Duke's season in the first weekend of the tournament, but as is tradition on the DBR Podcast, we are back today to recap the stats game, our special way of previewing the season. You will have to listen to find out who won, but it was not a pretty thing. It turns that Duke's season took many different turns than what we anticipated, from the good (Kyle Filipowski 2nd team All-ACC! Tyrese Proctor's emergence!) to the new as good (mostly injuries and Jacob Grandison not hitting his threes). All that said, though, we are holding ourselves accountable to our picks, at least the ones that were easy enough to track. After the break, we review what happened in the second round of the women's NCAA tournament, where Duke lost a heartbreaker in Cameron to Colorado. Similar to the men, it's a frustrating way to end the season, but also similar to the men, the future appears to be bright, so we eagerly await the return of Duke Basketball this fall.
