The full 2024-2025 ACC schedules have dropped for men’s and women’s basketball, and we are quick to react to the Duke schedules on Episode 648! We first start with the men’s schedule, where we take a look at how it shakes up for a Duke team with high expectations. We discuss the Saturday-Monday doubles and while they may be as favorable as we could hope for, Duke has more than the rest of the ACC. We then get into where some of the tough stretches may be, from being on the road for the first two ACC games to a nostalgic Tobacco Road stretch in the middle of the schedule that brings you back to the 9-team (or 7-team) ACC days. January also is a time where Duke will spend most of its days at home after a loaded November and December. After the break, we discuss some of the rest of the ACC teams and their schedule. Duke’s schedule is tougher than most, including almost all of the teams that are expected to be true contenders. Still, we have expected competition and we will get it with this schedule. The Duke football team stands at 4-0 after putting a beatdown on Middle Tennessee State to the tune of 45-17. Duke dominated this one from early on forcing three first quarter turnovers and turning each of them into TDs to stake an big lead that only grew as the game moved along. The Duke Blue Devils were able to win on the football field over the weekend, but on Episode 646 of the Duke Basketball Roundup, we know we need to get better. Duke was able to beat the UConn Huskies 26-21, the 3rd straight week that Duke scored 26 points. There were definitely some guys who had standout performances, but Donald and Jason know that improvement is a must as the calendar continues to move. We break down some of the things that need to improve as the Blue Devils turn their attention to this Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee. First, we preview Duke’s upcoming football game against UConn this weekend. UConn is a team that struggled mightily against Maryland but turned it around against Merrimack. Donald and Jason discuss what to watch for when the two teams take the field as well as what UConn brings to the table. There are a couple of skill players to watch as well as who could be under center for the Huskies. On DBR Bites #59, we recap Duke’s victory over Northwestern on the edge of Lake Michigan! Duke won 26-20 in a 2OT affair in Evanston, and there were some good and ugly parts about the whole game. Donald and Jason begin by resurrecting a fan favorite for basketball games: Headlines! We then get into what we liked and disliked about the game, and there were some key plays on offense and defense that led to Duke’s comeback win. No matter how ugly the game felt for the first 3.9 quarters, they were able to get to overtime and then win it with some key plays from our wide receivers. We also sing praises to the defense for keeping Duke in the game with some great plays and once again getting tackles in the backfield at a tremendous clip. After the break, the rest of the ACC had an up-and-down week, but there were some teams that had wins against P4 conference opponents that were noteworthy. The ACC needs to continue to get wins against the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 to help the conference when it comes time for the playoff and also some of these other bowl games. Duke Football is back on the field Friday night, and we preview their game against the Northwestern Wildcats on DBR Bites #58! Northwestern is in some new temporary digs right on the edge of Lake Michigan, and that will be the stage for a Friday night game against Duke. Donald and Jason begin the preview by discussing what we will see from Northwestern’s players. They’re led by a quarterback in Mike Wright that’s a dual threat option, throwing the ball in the air and leading the Wildcats in rushing in Week 1. There are some other skill players on the offensive and defensive sides of the football that Duke will focus on, but Northwestern hopes to combine options with quick throws to move the ball down the field. After the break, we discuss some of the things Duke needs to do well in order to win on the road, and it starts with establishing the run. Duke wants to improve on their rushing performance against Elon, as that could open up the rest of the offense. On defense, Duke will hope to contain Wright, particularly on the run, and force their offense off the field. Our offense can move the ball quickly and can tire out Northwestern’s defense. Finally, Jason and Donald predict that a pair of Duke’s experienced wideouts could have a big night and it’s one of the keys to Duke getting the win in Evanston. Make sure you’re following us! The Manny Diaz era got off to a great start at Duke walloped the Elon in this season's opening game. The Duke Basketball Roundup gives you a complete breakdown of what happened in the contest and it all starts with the dominant defense on display from Duke. Donald and Jason both want to talk about how many times Duke stopped the Phoenix with a sack or a tackle for loss. Duke was picked to finish 11th in the conference, and we discuss whether it is a reasonable place or if Duke should get more love. Also, Kenny Blakeney is hoping to raise some money for the Howard basketball program, and he’s doing it in an outside-the-box way: offering 1/3 of the program for $100 million. We discuss on whether he will be able to do it and what this creative idea would mean for not just the HBCUs, but also mid-major and low-major programs in college sports. We end by congratulating Lindsey Harding and Mistie Bass-Boyd for making moves to new positions in the NBA. Harding will serve as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under head coach JJ Redick, while Trajan Langdon has hired Bass-Boyd to the front office of the Detroit Pistons. The NBA Draft has been completed, and we discuss where Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski will begin their NBA careers on Episode 636! The NBA Draft was a 2-day affair this year, and we had to go through both days to learn where McCain and Flip ended up. Jared McCain was drafted 16th by the Philadelphia 76ers, and Jason and Donald are really happy about what could be a great situation for him in the Association. Jared could fit in not just with his shooting and rebounding ability, but with his personality and work ethic. We also discuss Kyle Filipowski, both on the court and off the court. He slips to the second round, eventually being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 32nd pick. We discuss what happened pre-draft that could have caused him to slip out of the first round and be left in the green room after night 1. We also get into the stories that have come up about his current relationship and what we have heard about how it affected not just his draft stock, but his world. For 41 years he was the voice of the Blue Devils, calling thousands of football and basketball games, using his voice to paint the pictures we could not see. We got another one! We thought the Duke Blue Devils were done in the transfer portal, but Jon Scheyer’s always closing. Cameron Sheffield will be headed to Durham as a transfer from Rice, and we react to what he brings to the table on DBR Bites Episode 48. Sheffield will head to Durham and is not a guy that’s expected to contend for any significant minutes next season among the guards. But, at 6’6” and with 3 years of D-1 experience under his belt, he still has 2 years of eligibility remaining and can be a guy that can really help the team prepare for games. Another one! The Blue Devils have landed maybe their best player of the transfer portal era with the addition of Maliq Brown. Brown is a 6-8, long-armed elite defender in the post and the Duke Basketball Roundup gang are thrilled to be adding a guy who was voted to the All-ACC Defensive team. Jason and Donald spend some time breaking down Maliq's game and, more importantly, how his skill set will fit alongside the rest of the Duke roster. But, the portal giveth and the portal taketh away. It is with a very heavy heart that Duke fans bid goodbye to Sean Stewart. More than anyone else to enter the portal, this one stung because we all saw glimpses of a truly elite athlete who has a path to be one of the most exciting players in all of college basketball. We’ve reached the emotional portion of the season where we bid farewell to a couple more players, Jeremy Roach and Jaden Schutt. Donald and Jason react to their departures on DBR Bites 45. Jeremy Roach, our two-time captain and soon-to-be Duke graduate, will test the NBA Draft waters and will also enter the transfer portal. We’ve followed Roach’s career since he was in high school, so it’s bittersweet to watch him leave Duke. But, we beam with pride when recalling his career and get into some of the thought process behind him deciding to enter the portal. After the break, Jaden Schutt has also decided to enter the transfer portal, and we discuss his time at Duke and how it didn’t work out quite the way everyone expected. Jason recalls some of the flashes of brilliance we saw from Schutt and how a fresh start may be exactly what he needs to continue his career. We’re certainly wishing him well. Caleb Foster is back! The Duke Blue Devils guard discussed teaming up next season with Tyrese Proctor on the latest episode of The Brotherhood Podcast, and we react to it on DBR Bites Episode 44! It is with a heavy heart, but with clear eyes, that the Duke Basketball Roundup says goodbye to Jared McCain, Kyle Filipowski, and Jaylen Blakes. Flip and Mac both declared for the NBA draft on Friday and seem fated to go somewhere around the late lottery. They stand to make millions of dollars and leave behind a legacy of inspiring play that led Duke to great heights. And Jaylen Blakes, who has performed the remarkable feat of graduating from Duke in just three years, now enters the NCAA transfer portal in search of a larger role on a different team in his final year of eligibility. We will miss all three of them oh so much and be rooting for them to succeed beyond their dreams wherever they go next. The Blue Devils get some great news for the 2024-25 campaign as it has been revealed that point-guard Tyrese Proctor will return to Durham to captain what is widely expected to be the preseason #1 team in the land. The Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast team are positively giddy with excitement over getting another year of an elite player like Proctor and they really cannot wait to watch him tossing lobs to what looks like a super bouncy Blue Devil team next season. Tyrese showed improvement in many areas in the past campaign and the notion of him having another year of development and growth should have every Duke fan excited. After the break, the DBR podcast guys take a moment to shout out the 8 Duke basketball players who have earned recognition on the ACC's All-Academic team. It is a testament to the commitment of the players and the school to make sure both sides of the student-athlete equation are emphasized at Duke. It is time for the Duke Basketball Roundup to reflect on the season in the way they do every year, by looking back at how awful the guys are at predicting the stats of the Blue Devil team. And, as as special treat, Sam Klein is back in the saddle to guide us through the results of the annual stats game. While the DBR podcast crew may have good sources and compelling insights, the stat game shows that the guys are just hysterically bad at some of their projections for the season.
