DBR Bites #57 - Bobby Hurley's coming to Cameron!
We’re back with a few topics on DBR Bites #57! Jason and Donald are super excited...Bobby Hurley is returning to Duke! Duke will play a charity exhibition against Arizona State in what will be the first trip to Cameron for Hurley as a coach. They’ve known this was in the works, but now we get to finally celebrate Hurley’s return to campus. Jason and Donald also discuss Duke Women playing a multi-team event in Vegas around the same time the men will be there. It sets up nicely for fans traveling to see both our teams play. On the other hand, the NIL tournament that is being set up in Vegas is in some serious danger due to the NCAA dropping some warnings about what is allowed and not allowed with regards to “pay for play” NIL. After the break, Bryce Davis has flipped his football commitment from Clemson to Duke, becoming one of the most heralded recruits in Duke Football history. We discuss the ramifications of this level of recruit coming to Durham. We end with the reports that UConn could be once again trying to find a new home with the Big XII. Ep 643#643 - Non-con Schedule Released
Duke has released the non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 Blue Devils and it is full of compelling and challenging matchups. The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the sked -- not just the marquis games against teams like Kentucky and Kansas, but also what Duke faces in some of the smaller teams like George Mason and Incarnate Word. After the break, Jason and Donald play a little draft game -- pick a team (5 starters plus a sub) from the best players of the past half-decade of Duke hoops (2020-2024). Jason's first pick may surprise you but there is sound logic behind it. However, his pick allows Donald to jump on the guy who is almost certainly the best Duke player of the past 5 years. Back and forth they go... which team do you think is best? Send us emails at DBRPodcast at gmail-dot-com with your thoughts. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 642#642 - Exclusive Conversation with Coach Jai Lucas!!
No one knows what is happening inside Duke basketball like the coaching staff... and the Duke Basketball Roundup is thrilled to present our conversation with Jon Scheyer's top assistant, Coach Jai Lucas. Jai gives us a candid, insiders view of how the team is shaping up for the 2024-25 season including exclusive details on why Kon Knueppel is wowing everyone and what it is about Cooper Flagg that makes him different from other trop recruits. We also discuss the changing landscape of recruiting and NIL as Jai explains why Duke has not gotten any early recruiting wins thus far and the impact of the transfer portal on high school recruiting. We also hear from Coach Lucas about the roles and responsibilities of the entire coaching staff, which teams he is looking out for in the ACC next season, and we get a good story about just how competitive Jon Scheyer actually is. This is an episode of the podcast that is not to be missed so tell your friends to make sure they all have a listen. Ep 641#641 - Is Duke's experience the key to success?
We are live with Episode 641 as we welcome Scott Rich to the show to help us navigate some interesting topics! Jason is out on vacation, but thankfully Scott is here to take us through some topics with Duke Blue Devils Basketball. First, Duke’s experience has been a topic of conversation all summer long. But how does it rank among Duke teams from previous years? Pretty well, actually! We discuss some of the data and whether it means that Duke will be successful this season. We also learned that Duke has another confirmed game on the non-conference schedule, as Wofford will be coming to town on November 16th. It adds to what is shaping up to be a pretty awesome schedule with some really tough tests for Duke. Scott and Donald are pretty happy with what Jon Scheyer is trying to do in scheduling some of these teams. After the break, we switch to the gridiron, as the ACC preseason poll was released. Duke was picked to finish 11th in the conference, and we discuss whether it is a reasonable place or if Duke should get more love. Also, Kenny Blakeney is hoping to raise some money for the Howard basketball program, and he’s doing it in an outside-the-box way: offering 1/3 of the program for $100 million. We discuss on whether he will be able to do it and what this creative idea would mean for not just the HBCUs, but also mid-major and low-major programs in college sports. We end by congratulating Lindsey Harding and Mistie Bass-Boyd for making moves to new positions in the NBA. Harding will serve as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under head coach JJ Redick, while Trajan Langdon has hired Bass-Boyd to the front office of the Detroit Pistons. We love that they’re getting opportunities to make their mark in the Association. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 640#640 - On the recruiting trail with On3's Jamie Shaw
It's time to talk some Duke recruiting on Episode 640! On this episode, we're joined by On3's Jamie Shaw to dive into how recruiting is going for Duke this offseason and who are some of the players we hope to see in Duke Blue in 2025. Duke has cast a wide net in recruiting this offseason, with 13 players of the Class of 2025 already receiving scholarship offers to come to Durham. Jamie gives us the players that are the primary focus at this point in time, and whether the focus is on a smaller freshman class coupled with the transfer portal or the goal is to bring in as many great freshman as we can. We also discuss how NIL may have rocketed up the importance list when trying to land the next great Duke players out of high school. Jamie gives us some names to remember as well as how Jon Scheyer and the staff are so good at convincing the best players in the country to come to the Gothic Wonderland. It's a great interview with some excellent insight into the process and how things have changed in the era of the portal and NIL. After the break, the date for Countdown to Craziness has been announced, and it's an early one: October 4th! We discuss our excitement at finally having the date where fans will get to see this team in person for the first time. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #56 - Intel from Cooper
A trio of topics on this latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup. Up first is the 2024 Summer Olympics. Jason and Donald recount some of their favorite moments so far before diving into the controversy over Jayson Tatum not playing in Team USA's first game. If you are here for outrage, you will hear at least a little bit of it. Up next, the podcast guys dive into the changes coming to NIL and especially to scholarship limits in the NCAA. This whole thing seems like a never-ending topic but the latest changes are quite significant to the future of college sports. And after the break, Jason and Donald give their favorite moments from the latest edition of the Brotherhood Podcast featuring a remarkably revealing interview with Cooper Flagg. What Cooper says about himself and his teammates reveals a lot about the makeup of this team and how it is trying to sculpt itself into a championship club. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 639#639 - The computer that says Duke is #2
The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a look at the rankings of Bart Torvik, who plugged a whole bunch of data into his computer and asked it to give him an analytical preseason ranking of every team in college basketball. It spat out two teams at the very top of the heap, the Houston Cougars and the Duke Blue Devils. It even projects how many points per game Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, and Kon Kneuppel will average next season. But, before that look at ones and zeroes, the podcast gang has a long conversation about the wild, wild west that is the current NIL landscape. Friend of the podcast Brendan Marks has helped write an article for The Athletic that takes a deep dive into the truth and lies behind NIL and the transfer portal, with some eye-opening anecdotes. The DBR guys give you their takeaways from a revealing and troubling look at how college basketball has been fundamentally changed over the past couple years... and the changes show no signs of slowing down. Ep 638#638 - Blue Devils head to the Olympics
After some time off, we’re back with Episode 638 as we get ready for the Olympics! The Olympics begin this week, and Jason and Donald go through all of the Duke Blue Devils who will be competing and coaching in the Summer Games. Short of ACC newcomers Stanford and Cal, Duke is sending the most athletes in the conference to Paris, which is really cool. We focus in on Khaman Maluach’s performance against the USA in a basketball exhibition where South Sudan almost had the monumental upset. Maluach showed some good things and some things to work on, and Jason and Donald break down all that he did and how it could translate to Duke. After the break, we discuss NBA Summer League and DJ Steward absolutely balling out for the Chicago Bulls. He did so well that he earned a two-way contract for this coming season, which is really cool! He follows a line of Blue Devils who have recently found their way into the NBA via unconventional paths, like through the G League. We’re glad that Steward is getting an opportunity to play for the Bulls this season. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 637#637 - Draft Express' Jon Chepkevich discusses Duke NBA prospects
We’re back with Episode 637, where we are joined by Jon Chepkevich of Draft Express to discuss some Duke Blue Devils and their NBA prospects! Recently, Sion James and Tyrese Proctor competed at the CP3 Elite Camp, while Kon Knueppel and Isaiah Evans attended the Jayson Tatum Elite Camp, and Chepkevich was present at both to view the athletes. We go through each of the players one by one, breaking down what they did well at the camps, what they can improve on, and their current draft prospects according to Draft Express. Chepkevich also has seen a lot of Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, and we take the time to go through their pros and cons. Both are expected to be high draft picks, with Flagg being #1, so it’s good to get an outside perspective about their abilities and how they could improve at Duke. After we say goodbye to Jon, Cooper Flagg has really broken out with his stellar play at USA Basketball training camp on the USA Select Team. We review some of the footage that we saw coming out of the scrimmages, and make no mistake: we have some of the best players on the planet now saying that Cooper Flagg is the real deal. DBR Bites #55 - Vegas Baby!
After taking a short July 4th holiday break, the Duke Basketball Roundup is back with a Vegas-heavy edition of DBR Bites. Donald spent a few days perusing the casinos of the strip this week and he came back with a list of the teams the sports books love and hate for next season in college basketball. Where does Duke rank and what does Vegas think of the ACC? Have a listen to find out. After the break, the podcast gang dives into early NBA summer league results including a former Dukie who looks like one of the best rim protectors in the entire summer league landscape. And last but not least, we have seen some short videos of Cooper Flagg playing in Vegas with the USA Basketball Select Team against the very best players in the world on Team USA. How did Cooper do when matched up with Lebron James, Jayson Tatum, Kawhi Leonard, and others? We have the answer on the latest edition of the DBR Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #54 - More practice intel!
The 2024-25 Duke Blue Devils are in the gym for summer workouts, and we have some intel from one of the practices courtesy of a listener! We discuss what we learned on DBR Bites Episode 54. Jason was able to speak to one of our listeners, who gave us some fantastic information about a practice they were allowed to watch. We go through each of the players and discuss what our listener saw from them. And there are some general insights on how the team looked and what some of the themes may be this season. One thing's for sure: we're going to learn a lot more about this team as the summer goes along! After the break, Cooper Flagg is leaving Duke to play for another team. That team: the USA Select team, which is a group of players who help the USA Basketball team prepare for the Olympics. Cooper's the only non-pro on the team and has made the team before playing a second of college basketball. It's a huge honor and we are excited at Cooper getting able to go up against some of the best players in the world and learn from them. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 636#636 - Jared McCain, Kyle Filipowski find out their NBA destinations
The NBA Draft has been completed, and we discuss where Jared McCain and Kyle Filipowski will begin their NBA careers on Episode 636! The NBA Draft was a 2-day affair this year, and we had to go through both days to learn where McCain and Flip ended up. Jared McCain was drafted 16th by the Philadelphia 76ers, and Jason and Donald are really happy about what could be a great situation for him in the Association. Jared could fit in not just with his shooting and rebounding ability, but with his personality and work ethic. We also discuss Kyle Filipowski, both on the court and off the court. He slips to the second round, eventually being drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 32nd pick. We discuss what happened pre-draft that could have caused him to slip out of the first round and be left in the green room after night 1. We also get into the stories that have come up about his current relationship and what we have heard about how it affected not just his draft stock, but his world. After the break, there were some Duke Blue Devils that will have new places to play in the NBA due to trades during the draft. We discuss where Wendell Moore and AJ Griffin will call home now with their trades to the Detroit Pistons and the Houston Rockets, respectfully. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 635#635 - Jared McCain's NBA draft stock with Jay Bilas
Time for part 2 of the DBR Podcast's NBA Draft preview with Jay Bilas. This time, we focus on Jared McCain, who has a great chance to be taken in the back end of the lottery after a season in which he showed he is one of the top few shooters in all of college basketball. Jason and Donald also get Jay's thoughts on the notion that the NCAA tournament will expand to add 4 or maybe 8 more teams. And last but not least, the DBR Podcast highlights some recent stats about Duke's media exposure in football and basketball. Can you guess where Duke falls on the list of most watched teams in the ACC in the two big revenue sports? We all know football is the king of the ratings and Duke isn't exactly a huge football draw, but you may be surprised where the Blue Devils land compared to the rest of the league. Ep 634#634 - Video of the 24-25 Blue Devils in action!!
There is no tradition quite like the DBR Podcast spending far too much time pouring over "raw, uncut" video of the Duke team playing a summer scrimmage. So, when the Duke social media team dropped its first heavily edited video of the summer, you just knew Jason and Donald would hop on a Duke Basketball Roundup podcast to chat about it. There is little question that Sion James and Kon Knueppel looked great in this video but there was plenty other stuff to notice and draw (wild) conclusions from. Duke has released the official roster so the podcast guys also spend some time talking about the size of this Duke team, one of the biggest teams in recent moment. And, after the break, we get to hear about Donald's long, personal relationship with a fast-rising recruit in the class of 2025 who just got a scholarship offer from Jon Scheyer. Ep 633#633 - Jay Bilas "Flips" for the NBA Draft
As we do every year around this time, the Duke Basketball Roundup welcomes Jay Bilas to the podcast to help us preview the NBA Draft. And, because this is a Duke-centric podcast, our primary focus is on the Dukies hoping to hear their names called nice and early on Draft night. Our conversation with Jay will be broken into two parts and in part one, we talk about Kyle Filipowski's draft prospects. Did he improve his stock by coming back to Duke for his soph campaign, where does Jay think Flip will get taken, and what role might Flip play for the team that drafts him? Plus, Jason and Donald ask Jay about the big news that JJ Redick has been hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. What does one former Dukie who works at ESPN think about another former Dukie who works at ESPN getting a head coaching job? Have a listen and find out. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 632#632 - Brendan Marks Interview Part 2 - Reviewing the ACC’s offseason
EWe’re honored to have Brenden Marks of The Athletic back to continue our conversation on Episode 632! On Part 1, we focused on Duke’s rebuilt roster, and on Part 2 of our interview, we expand our scope to the other 17 teams in the ACC. Marks discusses how some of the teams did in the transfer portal, with some of the teams that got much better and some of the teams that he felt missed an opportunity to improve. We discuss some of UNC’s issues with recruiting a big man and how the changing landscape of NIL has affected how teams recruit new players. We finally end with some of the players coming back that could help their teams and which teams to watch as they try to rise to the top half of the conference standings next season. After we say goodbye to Brendan Marks, Jason and Donald go into further discussion on several points that arose during the interview. Needless to say, we could have stayed on for a couple more hours with Brendan and not fully discussed every facet of roster construction, but we’re grateful that he was able to share so much knowledge not just on the team we follow religiously but also the rest of the conference. DBR Bites #53 - NBA Champs and the Duke Hall of Fame
There were tears of joy on the floor of the TD Garden last night as Jayson Tatum reached the pinnacle of basketball greatness, leading his Boston Celtics to a world championship. The Duke Basketball Roundup has all the stats and info about Tatum's remarkable performance and what it means for his place among the Duke greats to have played in the NBA. And, of course, the guys also have comments about all the other Dukies connected to the NBA finals including Kyrie, Lively, Amile, and even Steve Pagliuca. After the break, the DBR Podcast takes a moment to celebrate some of the greatest Duke athletes of all time, the newest inductees to the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame. Included among them are a fencer, a diver, a 3-time national champion in golf, a couple football players, a father-son lacrosse duo, and two of the best men's and women's basketball players to ever wear a Duke blue uniform. Ep 631#631 - Brendan Marks Interview Part 1 - Duke’s rebuilt roster
The Duke Blue Devils 2024-25 roster is rebuilt, and now they’re in the lab to gel into a team this summer. As they do so, we look back at how Duke did in the transfer portal and what we can expect from the team next season. On Episode 631, we welcome back Brendan Marks of The Athletic for an incredible interview that is broken down into two parts. This episode focuses on Part 1 of our interview, in which Marks helps us understand more about how this roster was constructed. We start with the transfer portal and how Duke did in relation to the rest of the conference at filling the holes that the roster had. This is a pivotal year for Duke, and Marks believes that the portal additions will help Duke in so many ways. We then focus on some of the freshmen coming in as well as where the main returnees - Tyrese Proctor and Caleb Foster - fit into the mix. This team will be built around Cooper Flagg, but you won’t want to miss what Brendan thinks of the potential starting 5 - competition may drive who gets some of these spots! We will be back in your feeds early next week to give you Part 2 of our interview with Brendan Marks, taking a look at the ACC as a whole and how the other 17 teams (yes, we gotta get used to that) are looking as we enter the summer months. DBR Bites #52 - ACC-SEC Challenge and Goodbye to a Duke Legend!
Few people have touched the hearts of Duke fans the way Bob Harris has. For 41 years he was the voice of the Blue Devils, calling thousands of football and basketball games, using his voice to paint the pictures we could not see. So, it is with so much sadness that Duke nation today mourns Bob's passing after a battle with Alzheimer's. This episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup includes a couple of Bob's legendary calls and moments of remembrance from Jason and Donald. Before we get to the sad news, the episode starts with word that the ACC-SEC Challenge matchups are set. Duke will be playing a very impressive Auburn club and the game will happen in Cameron. The DBR podcast breaks down some of what to expect from the Challenge and from the latest in a long line of difficult non-conference opponents Duke will be playing next season. Ep 630#630 - Scheyer talks, more scrimmage intel, and academic success
The DBR guys start this episode by breaking down the fabulous conversation between Jay Bilas and Jon Scheyer on the latest episode of The Brotherhood Podcast. Scheyer may talk in coach speak, but if you read between the lines you can really hear some interesting insight into the team he is forming this coming season and what he hopes for Duke basketball going forward. Plus, the hints, nudges, and secrets just keep on coming out of Durham following the K Academy games. The Duke Basketball Roundup gang spoke to someone with intimate knowledge of how the 2024-25 Blue Devils are shaping up and got some very interesting nuggets. DBR Bites #50 - Intel from K Academy Pickup Ball
The K Academy is in full effect, and the 2024-25 roster has started doing pickup games with some of the alumni back in town. We discuss what we’ve heard from the first sessions on DBR Bites Episode 50. Before we get to the intel, Jason and Donald discuss an article from the Raleigh News & Observer on how Jon Scheyer rebuilt this roster for next season. There are some very direct remarks from Scheyer on what he was looking for in constructing this roster and it discusses some of the frank conversations that were had on expectations and competition. We give our thoughts on some of the information from the article that we did not know as well as reiterate some of the stuff we have already discussed on the pod. We then get into the intel. Jason has heard some things about how the players have done with some of the first pickup games of the summer, and we go through the players one by one to discuss how they did. More importantly, Jason and Donald are always jealous of the people who get to go to K Academy every year and are looking for sponsors* for next year. After the break, Jaylen Blakes has committed to the Stanford Cardinal, and we’re very happy that he will get a chance to compete for serious minutes next season and get another excellent degree. Plus, it means Blakes will return to Cameron with the Cardinal, and we know the fans will give him a raucous applause when that happens. Make sure you’re following us! On this episode, we focus on the bigs, and with four main bigs vying to be a part of the Duke rotation - Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, Maliq Brown, and Patrick Ngongba - we discuss what their roles will be. The one we spend a ton of time on is Cooper Flagg because it’s very clear by the moves made that this generational talent will be the focal point of the offense, but who will play alongside him in the frontcourt...and will Cooper play more of the 3 or 4? We discuss all of that in the first (long) segment. After the break, we discuss the walk-ons who will return to Duke for another season: Stanley Borden, Neal Begovich, and Spencer Hubbard. Will their roles change on the team and who might you see on the floor a bit more? We then move onto the major news in the world of NIL and what a potential court settlement could mean for the future of NIL in college sports. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #48 - Another Portal Addition!! Cameron Sheffield Comes To Cameron!
We got another one! We thought the Duke Blue Devils were done in the transfer portal, but Jon Scheyer’s always closing. Cameron Sheffield will be headed to Durham as a transfer from Rice, and we react to what he brings to the table on DBR Bites Episode 48. Sheffield will head to Durham and is not a guy that’s expected to contend for any significant minutes next season among the guards. But, at 6’6” and with 3 years of D-1 experience under his belt, he still has 2 years of eligibility remaining and can be a guy that can really help the team prepare for games. He can rebound, he’s a consistently decent 3 point shooter, and he will be a guy that can help the team in practice get better. And, there’s more experience added to the roster. Jason and Donald discuss everything and what this means for Duke in 2024-25. After the break, Jason is in New Orleans and got a chance to sit down with Sion James at Tulane for some coffee tea as a way to get to meet him and for Sion to get to know some of the Duke community. Jason was impressed by his character and he feels like a guy that can become a fan favorite at Duke. We discuss some of that brief conversation that Jason had with Sion and we end with a nugget about the new roster and how quickly they will unite on campus to get the summer workouts started. Ep 628#628 - Who plays, who sits next year Part 1 - The Perimeter
The portal is closed (as far as Duke is concerned)! According to everything the Duke Basketball Roundup has heard, the Duke roster for 2024-25 is pretty much set. There may be a practice player brought it but in terms of meaningful rotation guys, these are the 11 guys. So, the next natural question is -- who plays what role on next year's team? The DBR Podcast crew -- Jason Evans, Donald Wine, and frequent guest-host Scott Rich -- sit down for a deep dive into that question... and they all have different answers. In part 1 of this exercise, they look only at the perimeter players -- from the 5th year transfers to Duke two returnees to a trio of intriguing freshmen. If you want to know which guys start, which one factor in the rotation, and which ones may struggle for minutes, this is the episode you need to listen to. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 627#627 - EMERGENCY POD! Sion James commits to Duke!
Sound the sirens! Sion James is headed to Duke, and we discuss it on Episode 627. The 6’6” graduate transfer arrives in Durham after 4 years at Tulane, and Donald and Jason are excited about having him onboard. Besides him being built like a machine, he brings a lot of qualities to the table that will really help the Blue Devils next season, from strong play at the rim to sportsmanship. When it comes to transfer players, it’s about fit...and Sion James is a great fit for the Blue Devils. After the break, Christian Reeves is headed to Clemson. We discuss his departure briefly and that leads into a continuation of our conversation on Duke players entering the portal. Donald focuses on some of the talk over Jeremy Roach leaving and he’s here to tell you that it’s not an indictment on the program that he has decided to graduate and leave his home for a new opportunity. Ep 626#626 - Portal Intel, Parent Complaints, and Scheduling News
We have all heard the rumors, guard Sion James from Tulane is thiiiis close to picking Duke as his next destination. On the latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup Jason and Donald do a deep dive on what the transfer portal has brought and what it has taken away. You will hear intel about how Jon Scheyer is building this roster and what it will take to complete it. The guys also talk about where some of our beloved former Dukies are headed and what their prospects are in those locations. Oh, and there is scheduling news that shows how excited Jon Scheyer is about the 2024-25 Blue Devils as Duke prepares to take on one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the land. And, after the break, we have something really unusual. The DBR Podcast peels back the curtain on the decision players made to leave Duke. Jason got a chance to have a brutally honest conversation with a parent of one of the players who entered the portal and Jason tells you exactly what that player heard from the program that led him to choose to continue his playing days elsewhere. It is a raw summation of how some of the kids who are leaving Duke feel about how the program treated them and could be eye opening to some fans. This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Ep 625#625 - Detailing the History of the Blue Devil!
We have a fun episode for you! On Episode 625, we discuss the history of the Duke Blue Devil mascot as we interview Bryan Reklis and welcome back Sam Klein! Details of the Devil: The History of Duke’s Mascot is a documentary that covers the 102-year history of our beloved mascot and some of the moments that have made the Blue Devil so special to all of us. Sam Klein returns to help us discuss this topic as we welcome Bryan Reklis, Sr. Video Producer of Duke University’s office of Communications & Marketing to the show to discuss the documentary! Bryan helped write, direct, and edit this documentary, which is available on YouTube to watch. With Bryan, we go through some of the parts of the film that were important in chronicling the history of the Blue Devil and we get into some stories that were not in the film. Sam Klein, who was the mascot while he attended Duke, also provides us with some info that did not make the film as we discuss why the Blue Devil is so lovable and some of the things that the mascots have to deal with in order to provide boundless energy to Duke sporting events. DBR Bites #47 - Next Portal Targets
The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a few minutes of several different topics. Jason and Donald begin by looking at Duke's recent activity in the transfer portal. While we don't know the name of the next player Jon Scheyer expects to sign, we are getting some interesting hints about what type of player it will be. After that, the guys spend a few moments getting giddy over what they have seen in recent weeks from incoming freshman big man Khaman Maluach as he has faced off against the grown men of the Basketball Africa League. Whew, it has really been impressive. The guys take a break and then get into a quick conversation about the fancy new scoreboard coming to Cameron. And then they wrap it all up by talking about a major lawsuit that the NCAA wants to settle which could effectively end the private NIL era by making all teams actually pay the players a fair wage. (Audio warning -- Jason had some technical difficulties in this episode and his audio is lower than we would like. the DBR Podcast apologizes for the lower than usual standard of quality in this episode). Ep 624#624 - BREAKING NEWS: Mason Gillis, Welcome to Duke!
This episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup is all about the future of the program... both in terms of the transfer portal and incoming freshmen. First up, Jason and Donald welcome former Purdue wing Mason Gillis to Durham as the newest addition to the team. Gillis is a "dawg" who will not be out-toughed on the floor and will provide excellent defense to go with experienced leadership. He's also a dynamite outside shooter. If you had a machine to design the perfect fit for next year's Duke team, it would probably spit out Mason Gillis. And the DBR Podcast also welcomes a special guest to this episode. Jeff Fedotin is a sportswriter for Forbes.com who attended this weekend's Jordan Brand Classic, featuring 5 of the 6 members of the incoming freshman class. You already knew Cooper Flagg was a star but wait until you hear Jeff talk about some of the other guys... especially Kon Knueppel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #46 - BREAKING NEWS: Duke lands Maliq Brown!
Another one! The Blue Devils have landed maybe their best player of the transfer portal era with the addition of Maliq Brown. Brown is a 6-8, long-armed elite defender in the post and the Duke Basketball Roundup gang are thrilled to be adding a guy who was voted to the All-ACC Defensive team. Jason and Donald spend some time breaking down Maliq's game and, more importantly, how his skill set will fit alongside the rest of the Duke roster. But, the portal giveth and the portal taketh away. It is with a very heavy heart that Duke fans bid goodbye to Sean Stewart. More than anyone else to enter the portal, this one stung because we all saw glimpses of a truly elite athlete who has a path to be one of the most exciting players in all of college basketball. Sadly, that path has led him away from Duke. Listen in as Jason and Donald give their perspectives on Sean's decision and what lies ahead for Duke as the roster is still very much in flux. Ep 623#623 - Duke's place in the transfer portal era
We are back with a full episode where we discuss the Duke Blue Devils in the transfer portal era on Episode 623. TJ Power announced yesterday that he has entered the transfer portal, so we begin with that discussion (note: this show was recorded a couple hours before Sean Stewart announced he is also entering the portal, so that discussion will come on a later episode). Power’s departure leads to a grander discussion that Donald and Jason have: why is Duke losing so many players to the portal this season? It’s a new world we live in, where guys can transfer every single year if they want to in pursuit of their playing time goals, so we have a lengthy chat about what it means for Duke and what Duke fans should understand when thinking about how the transfer portal affects college basketball. After the break, there are reports that Duke is trying to add Maine and Kansas to the non-conference schedule for next season, and we’re pretty excited about some of the other potential matchups that we could see early in the season. We end the show with a HUGE surprise that Donald shares with Jason that should have everyone excited! Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #45 - We say farewell to Jeremy Roach and Jaden Schutt
We’ve reached the emotional portion of the season where we bid farewell to a couple more players, Jeremy Roach and Jaden Schutt. Donald and Jason react to their departures on DBR Bites 45. Jeremy Roach, our two-time captain and soon-to-be Duke graduate, will test the NBA Draft waters and will also enter the transfer portal. We’ve followed Roach’s career since he was in high school, so it’s bittersweet to watch him leave Duke. But, we beam with pride when recalling his career and get into some of the thought process behind him deciding to enter the portal. After the break, Jaden Schutt has also decided to enter the transfer portal, and we discuss his time at Duke and how it didn’t work out quite the way everyone expected. Jason recalls some of the flashes of brilliance we saw from Schutt and how a fresh start may be exactly what he needs to continue his career. We’re certainly wishing him well. DBR Bites #44 - Caleb Foster returns!
Caleb Foster is back! The Duke Blue Devils guard discussed teaming up next season with Tyrese Proctor on the latest episode of The Brotherhood Podcast, and we react to it on DBR Bites Episode 44! We hinted that it was coming due to the show notes in The Brotherhood Podcast’s preview on YouTube referencing it, but Caleb Foster will return for his sophomore season to pair up with Proctor in the backcourt. Jason and Donald discuss what a boost it will be to the lineup next season. The team’s going to be tall and have lots of length on defense! After the break, we discuss the performances of Cooper Flagg, Isaiah Evans, and Khaman Maluach at the Nike Hoops Summit (Patrick Ngongba was also present, but did not play). While we are very much in the camp of not wanting people to gather too much from an all star game, it’s hard not to be excited at Cooper Flagg’s performance. We close by celebrating Paolo Banchero making history and Grayson Allen making bank! Make sure you’re following us! Ep 622#622 - Farewell to Flip, Jared, and Jaylen
It is with a heavy heart, but with clear eyes, that the Duke Basketball Roundup says goodbye to Jared McCain, Kyle Filipowski, and Jaylen Blakes. Flip and Mac both declared for the NBA draft on Friday and seem fated to go somewhere around the late lottery. They stand to make millions of dollars and leave behind a legacy of inspiring play that led Duke to great heights. And Jaylen Blakes, who has performed the remarkable feat of graduating from Duke in just three years, now enters the NCAA transfer portal in search of a larger role on a different team in his final year of eligibility. We will miss all three of them oh so much and be rooting for them to succeed beyond their dreams wherever they go next. This episode of the Roundup also includes a quick mention of some good news for Duke returnees that is due to drop on Monday morning as well as our words about the tragic passing of Dereck Lively's mother, Kathy Drysdale. DBR Bites #43 - Proctor Returns to Duke!
The Blue Devils get some great news for the 2024-25 campaign as it has been revealed that point-guard Tyrese Proctor will return to Durham to captain what is widely expected to be the preseason #1 team in the land. The Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast team are positively giddy with excitement over getting another year of an elite player like Proctor and they really cannot wait to watch him tossing lobs to what looks like a super bouncy Blue Devil team next season. Tyrese showed improvement in many areas in the past campaign and the notion of him having another year of development and growth should have every Duke fan excited. After the break, the DBR podcast guys take a moment to shout out the 8 Duke basketball players who have earned recognition on the ACC's All-Academic team. It is a testament to the commitment of the players and the school to make sure both sides of the student-athlete equation are emphasized at Duke. Oh, and if you travel down the road a little bit to Chapel Hill, the number of their players who earned academic recognition from the ACC is just shameful. Learn more about your ad choices. DBR Bites #42 - Mark Mitchell Enters The Transfer Portal
We’re back with DBR Bites Episode 42 as we presumably say goodbye to Mark Mitchell’s time at Duke Blue Devils. Donald and Jason come together to celebrate Mark Mitchell as he has entered his name in the transfer portal. Jason and Donald discuss what it means for Mark Mitchell and for Duke and how this is a huge loss for the team but could mean a better setup for Mark. We certainly wish him the best and we discuss some of the nice moments he had in a Duke uniform. After the break, we recap the national championship game, which saw UConn win its second straight title. Needless to say, we’re not happy about it, but we discuss UConn’s place among the blue bloods and Dan Hurley’s success as a coach. We end with a brief look at ESPN’s Way Too Early Top 25. Duke’s at the top, but what does that mean for this team and us as fans? We gotta get ready...the offseason is officially here. Time to get better. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 621#621 - The Future So Bright...
While we await decisions about who from last season's Blue Devils will be a part of next season's Blue Devils, the DBR Podcast takes a peek into the future with a look at some of the Dukies-to-be who were playing in the high school national championships this weekend. It was a very impressive show put on by Cooper Flagg, Darren Harris, and (surprisingly) the once-injured Patrick Ngongba. Jason and Donald break down all of what they observed and when you hear the comments about Cooper Flagg... well lets just say the names getting tossed around for comparison are pretty heady company. After the break, the guys also opine on the UConn - Purdue matchup and what they thought of the women's national title game between the unstoppable force that was South Carolina and the unbeatable talent that is Caitlin Clark. Ep 620#620 - Season recap with a special guest
It is time for the Duke Basketball Roundup to reflect on the season in the way they do every year, by looking back at how awful the guys are at predicting the stats of the Blue Devil team. And, as as special treat, Sam Klein is back in the saddle to guide us through the results of the annual stats game. While the DBR podcast crew may have good sources and compelling insights, the stat game shows that the guys are just hysterically bad at some of their projections for the season. Of course, it wouldn't be a Sam episode without a few amusing diversions and this one includes some conversation about viewing the upcoming eclipse, Sam's time inside the Blue Devil costume, and Bluegrass music. Because nothing screams DBR Podcast like Blue Devils and Bluegrass. Enjoy!! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #41 - Christian Reeves and Mickie Dees
The Duke Basketball Roundup crew has a lot to cover in this episode. Christian Reeves says his time in Durham is probably over, he is entering the transfer portal. We have nothing but best wishes for a very tall kid who just could never find the health or opportunity to get on the floor for Duke. Next, the guys look ahead to the crop of incoming Dukies with a recap of what they say at the McDonald's All-American game. Cooper Flagg and Isaiah Evans were both in the starting lineup for the East... what did Jason and Donald see from them? After the break, the DBR Podcast gets into the TV ratings from the NCAA tournament. And they wrap things up with a trip down memory lane with a search for the most dominant team of the past 30 years (the KenPom efficiency era). You may be surprised to find that one team stands far and away above all others. See if you can guess which team it is. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 619#619 - Burned! Blue Devils bow out to NC State
It wasn't supposed to end this way. NC State knocked the Blue Devils out of the tournament, ending the season for a club that seemed poised to make a magical run to the Final Four. This simply wasn't Duke's day as the team suffered one of their worst shooting performances of the entire year and State ran away and hid on the backs of DJ Burns and DJ Horne. The DBR Podcast has a full breakdown of everything that happened in the contest from the good (like Jared McCain and Sean Stewart) to the bad (like the shooting woes and Duke's inability to get a stop in the second half). There will be plenty of time to talk about the coming decisions regarding the NBA draft and the transfer portal, but for the moment we just want to focus on the game that ended it all. Sigh... Ep 618#618 - Duke’s Toughness Sends Sweet Blue Devils to Elite 8
We’re still buzzing after Duke’s thrilling win in the Sweet 16 over the Houston Cougars, and we do a full recap on Episode 618! Duke set some records with this win, and answered a lot of questions about their toughness. After reviewing some of the amazing headlines we received, we get to the game, and toughness is the first thing Donald and Jason discuss. It was the theme for the game, and in a game where haymakers were thrown by Houston in the form of their physical play, Duke answered the bell each time and dished out some punches of their own. Ryan Young, Tyrese Proctor, Jeremy Roach, and Kyle Filipowski are some of the players who get some deserved love, and we send some love to Jon Scheyer and the coaching staff for their preparation for this big game. After we deal with the good, we discuss some of the things to improve, and thankfully, we have another chance to do so. After we give our plays of the game, we move onto the Elite 8 matchup against a familiar foe: NC State. They’re a much different team than the one we saw twice already in March, but Duke is a different team too. We discuss some of the things to look out for when the two teams fight for the right to head to the Final Four. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #40 - VICTORY IS OURS!! ONTO THE ELITE 8!!
EDuke 54 - Houston 51! It was a war and Duke was the victor. Only minutes after the game ended, Jason and Donald hopped on to give us an "instant reaction" podcast. You can hear how emotionally drained and emotionally charged they are at the same time from an incredibly hard-fought Duke victory. The Duke Basketball Roundup team will have their usual list of the good and bad and all that other stuff in the coming hours, but for now they are just basking in the glory of a trip to the Elite 8... and by basking we mean plenty of cussing and laughing and celebrating. Of course, they also take a moment to tip their cap to the Houston Cougars, a great opponent who would have beaten most teams on this day, but didn't beat Duke. Up next a very familiar NC State crew but for now, we just want to sit back and enjoy everything this team has earned so far. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 617#617 - Houston Preview Part 2: Tough and Relentless
We continue our preview of the Houston Cougars on Episode 617 as we get ready for tomorrow night! The Duke Blue Devils will have their hands full tomorrow night against the Coogs, and Donald and Jason go through their normal preview format as we figure out how Duke can win this Sweet 16 matchup. The two things that have been used the most to describe Houston: tough and relentless. It's present in everything they do, and it's why they've walked into the Big XII and dominated in season 1. They have so many big wins that we can't even list them all! The only team that has figured out the Coogs has been Iowa State, and we break down what has made Houston so successful against everybody else. The metrics on this team are off the charts. They have arguably the best defense in the country and their offense is no slouch either. There are a ton of things that they do well but no team is perfect. Houston has a couple of spots where Duke can take advantage. After the break, we get to the players and break them down individually. Who will Houston rely on the most? How does Kelvin Sampson rotate his guys and where could Duke take them out of their game? We discuss it all to conclude our preview. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 616#616 - Houston Preview Part 1 with the Voice of the Coogs
The Duke Blue Devils are preparing for their Sweet 16 matchup with the Houston Cougars, so we begin Part 1 of our preview by welcoming Jeremy Branham from Houston Basketball Radio to Episode 616! Branham is the voice of Cougars Basketball and has had the best seat in the house this season for Houston. So, he has a great perspective of what has made Houston so successful this season, their first in the Big XII. Branham tells us what has made Houston so good this year, and the main theme is: toughness. Houston is tough and relentless, especially on defense. It carries over to the offense, where their guard play has been tremendous. Branham talks about some of the players who have made Houston go all season long. They may not be tall, but they’re athletic, they’re mobile, and they will try to use their physicality to grind you down. We also get into what Houston may be worried about when they hit the court against Duke. Who are the Duke players that will give them nightmares? Branham tells us who Kelvin Sampson and the Cougars will likely focus on Friday night in Dallas. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 615#615 - Recap of the Rout! Duke Destroys Dukes!

DBR Bites #39 - Instant Reaction to Duke Dismantling James Madison
How sweet (16) it is! Duke walloped the Dukes of James Madison in a game that was dominated by the Blue Devils from the opening minutes. The Duke Basketball Roundup is going to have a full recap in their usual style tomorrow, but Jason and special guest Scott Rich wanted to hop on right away after the game was over to give a little instant reaction to the victory. Obviously, the story of the game was Jared McCain raining threes from all over the floor, breaking James Madison's spirit but the podcast guys also have tons of praise for Duke's overall effort, especially on the defensive end of the floor. And in addition to McCain, Jason and Scott say a bunch of other Dukies are deserving of our praise after what may have been the team's best win of the entire season. Peaking at the right time and headed to Dallas for the Sweet 16!! Note - Jason had some microphone problems in this episode. He promises to get it fixed by tomorrow when he records the full recap with Donald. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 614#614 - Vanquishing Vermont!
It wasn't a nail biter, but it wasn't exactly easy either. Still, the Blue Devils turned up the defensive pressure and survived the first round of the NCAA tournament with a victory over a game Vermont Catamounts club. The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup dives into the combinations and strategies that helped Duke win their R64 game and live to fight another day. Jason and Donald have effusive praise for the Duke D and for the way the team shared the ball on offense. After the break, the guys delve into what worked in this contest that can be translated to Duke's next opponent, James Madison, a smaller conference team that is largely untested but which appears to have several very dangerous elements that can pose problems for any team in the land. Ep 613#613 - How to Corral the Catamounts
March Madness is here, and Duke begins its journey on Friday. We preview their opponent, the Vermont Catamounts, on Episode 613. Donald and Jason begin by examining Vermont's record, who they've played, and historically how they've done under coach John Becker. The short answer: they've been stellar the past decade plus! We discuss some of the teams they've played and use that to move into the metrics. What does Vermont do well? What do they struggle with? It's a stark difference between their offense and their defense. After the break, we break down some of the key players to watch on Vermont's team and what they bring to the table. They have a lot of experience and they play a lot of guys for considerable minutes, and we discuss the individual players and how they match up against Duke. We also take a look at what Duke needs to do in order to win this game and advance to the Round of 32. We end the pod by highlighting a new podcast that we're excited to listen to featuring a beloved member of The Brotherhood. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp.
