Ep 668#668 - Chatting with an underdog expert

If you want to understand how Jon Scheyer thinks about basketball, there are few reporters out there better to speak to than Jordan Brenner. Brenner writes for the Athletic and hosts a podcast about finding the underdogs and upsets in college and professional sports. But, back when he was a writer for ESPN: The Magazine, he wrote numerous profiles on Jon Scheyer and Duke basketball. Brenner joined the DBR Podcast crew for a conversation about how the first month of the season has gone for Duke and where the team goes from here. He addresses the strengths and weaknesses he has seen so far and reveals why he thinks this Duke team is the best yet in Scheyer's young career at the helm. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 667#667 - Devil D crushes Seattle RedHawks

If Seattle is sleepless, it is because the Duke defense gave them nightmares. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down the Blue Devils 70-48 win over a pretty decent RedHawk club. There is plenty of praise for the defensive energy on display, especially the effort put forth by Maliq Brown. Jason and Donald also talk about the offense, which wasn't as sharp as it could be but showed some promising signs -- including an early appearance by "The Slim Reaper," Isaiah Evans. Are the positives we saw against Seattle something that will carry over to this week's big game against Auburn? After the break the podcast gang also dives into the wild ending of the Duke-Wake football game and all the craziness across the college football landscape over the weekend. They have some thoughts on overtimes and flag planting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

DBR Bites #71 - Regrouping Against Seattle

The Duke Blue Devils are back in action on Friday night against the Seattle Redhawks, and we preview that contest on DBR Bites Episode 71. Duke looks to regroup after the loss to Kansas in Las Vegas, and they close out the week against a Seattle team that is stronger than their 2-4 record would indicate. Jason and Donald preview what to expect from Seattle, from their analytics to their players. They then break down some of the matchups to watch for when the two teams hit the floor on Friday night. After the break, Daniel Jones was released by the New York Giants, but has found a new home with the Minnesota Vikings. We briefly discuss the hopes for Danny Dimes with the Vikings and the hopes he can carve out a new path in his NFL career. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 666#666 - Devils Jayhawked in Sin City

Ugh, we hate these episodes. The Duke Blue Devils dropped a close game to the Kansas Jayhawks in Las Vegas, and on the Devil’s Episode, we recap the second loss of the year. Donald was in Vegas at the game, so he begins with a recap of the meet up he had with DBR Podcast listeners before the game! It’s always great to meet our listeners, and we’ll do it again soon. Donald and Jason then get to the game, with headlines, general thoughts, and discussing some of the good things that did happen. They then get to the bad from this game, and it was a game of details. There are so many chances that Duke had to take control of this game at certain moments, but they weren’t able to do so. We also address the question of whether it was Kansas outcoaching Duke down the stretch. We close things out with our Play of the Game. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 665#665 - Jayhawk Alert! What Duke will face against Kansas

Fresh off that big win at Arizona, Duke faces another major test as the Blue Devils square off against Kansas in Las Vegas. One of the most eagerly anticipated games of "Feast Week" will feature Duke's young stars against a Jayhawk team full of super experienced veterans who know how college basketball is played. It all starts with the man in the middle, Hunter Dickinson, who is probably the best offensive post player in the country. But, as the DBR Podcast gang explains, Kansas has plenty of other weapons on the roster. There is a reason this Kansas club has been ranked #1 in the land since the pre-season. Listen in as Jason and Donald break it all down -- and if you are planning to be in Vegas for the big game, Donald wants to meet you. Listen in (around the 38 minute mark) to hear where Donald is planning his Vegas meet-up with DBR Podcast fans in the hours before the game tips off. Jason and Donald also dive into the Saturday night thriller in Wally Wade as Duke holds off Virginia Tech to win 31-28. It was win #8 on the season for Manny Diaz's crew and featured a huge senior day performance by Eli Pancol as well as Maalik Murphy setting the Duke record for TD passes in a season. Ep 664#664 - Duke Flaggstaffs Arizona with Konfident Defense

The Duke Blue Devils got the huge road win last night against the Arizona Wildcats, and we recap everything on Episode 664. Duke went to Tucson to take on Arizona, and thankfully the defense and fight were present the entire night. Donald and Jason start with the headlines and then talk about everything that Duke did to win this game at McKale Memorial. It was a dogfight of a game, and Duke showed that they can withstand it and do what’s necessary to win. It was a frustrating game offensively for large stretches of the night, but the defense led the way and especially the rebounding. Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel, Sion James, and Tyrese Proctor are all standouts for very different reasons. After the break, we discuss the things that needed to be better, from free throws to missed layups. It wasn’t a perfect game and it was frustrating game. But, the fight got us across the finish line. We then discuss our play of the game as well as our players of the week. Next up: the Kansas Jayhawks in Las Vegas. Donald will be there! All listeners are invited to come meet up with him at Tom’s Watch Bar inside New York/New York Casino at 3pm PT on Tuesday to say hi and talk some Duke Basketball ahead of the big game. DBR Bites #70 - ACC Surprises and Disappointments so far

We know, we know... the season is still very young but it is never too early to look at the rest of the ACC and try to see some patterns. So, the Duke Basketball Roundup gang did a deep dive into all the ACC results so far this season and came up with a few teams that have been better than expected and several who seems worse. On the good side we get Pitt, Notre Dame, and Stanford (thanks to the stellar play thus far of none other than Jaylen Blakes). On the bad side, there's Wake Forest, Syracuse, Louisville, and Georgia Tech. Jason and Donald break down what each of these clubs has done so far this season to land then on the naughty or nice list... and the guys point out that all of this really matters to Duke when it comes time to prove that Duke's regular season record was achieved against reasonable competition. DBR Bites #69 - Arizona Awaits

The Blue Devils face their second big test of the early season on Friday when they face the formidable Arizona Wildcats. Last year it was Arizona stealing a win at Duke and the Blue Devils hope to return the favor as they visit the McKale Center in Tucson, a rare true road game in the non-conference schedule. The Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the Wildcats roster and how they have played thus far this year. They have struggled from three point range but play at a really fast pace and may be the best rebounding team in the country. There are some really compelling matrchups on the court, including Tyrese Proctor facing off against the hated former Tarheel Caleb Love. As the DBR gang makes clear, this is a hugely important game for Duke. After dropping a close one to Kentucky, the Devils need to show they can win against the other top teams in college basketball. Ep 663#663 - Wofford Housed!

The Duke Blue Devils bounced back in a big way against Wofford on Saturday, and we recap it on Episode 663. Jason joins Donald for a few minutes from Las Vegas on this one, so we welcome Scott Rich back to the show to help Donald sift through all the good that happened in the game. There were some standout performances individually, but the defense was sensational and set some records. After the break, Donald and Scott nitpick with the stuff to work on and they pick their plays of the game and player of the week. It’s a fun recap with so many good things, and then the wait is on for the Arizona game next Friday. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #68 - We Learn What A Wofford Is

The Duke Blue Devils return to Cameron on Saturday to take on the Wofford Terriers, and we preview the game on DBR Bites #68. Charles Barkley once said famously, “I don’t know what a Wofford is...but I know basketball.” Well, we get to learn who the Wofford Terriers are as we get ready for the Blue Devils to line up against them. This is always that difficult team that gives opponents fits in the NCAA Tournament, so we have to take them seriously. After discussing who Wofford has played and how they’ve done so far, Jason and Donald get into the analytics, focusing on what they do well on offense and defense as well as where they haven’t been great. Hopefully the 3 point shooting is back on Saturday, because Wofford allows a lot of them! We then discuss some of the players who we could see from Wofford, including one that has a personal connection to Jason that will have him perhaps cheering for a couple of Terrier 3s on Saturday. After the break, Duke is headed to Army next year for a Veterans Day road game at West Point, and we think that’s going to be super cool. And, we end with Jared McCain absolutely lighting it up for the Philadelphia 76ers and earning some buzz for Rookie of the Year. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 662#662 - What happened? Understanding Duke's loss to Kentucky

Well, that wasn't the ending we all expected. The Blue Devils fumble the ball away down the stretch and drop their first game of the season to Kentucky at the Champions Classic. The DBR Podcast was in State Farm Arena for the big event as Jason was in attendance along with some of his class of '89 friends. He has observations from the site and the podcast also welcomes back Sam Klein to help breakdown what went wrong for Duke in this game. Though it was an L, the podcast gang has a feeling there was a lot learned in this contest that will turn into more Ws in the future. After the break, Donald, Jason, and Sam also get into some videos recently posted online by Kyle Singler that seem to show a guy who is very troubled. Sam, especially, feels a connection here as he knew Kyle when they were classmates at Duke. We are wishing Kyle well and hope he gets what he needs at this difficult time. DBR Bites #67 - Wildcat Alert! Previewing Kentucky

Ok, enough with the overmatched opponents. The Blue Devils are ready for some real competition. Duke faces Kentucky on Tuesday in the Champion's Classic and any time these two bluest of blue bloods get together you know it will be a game to remember! The Duke Basketball Roundup has a complete preview of the contest including a breakdown of Kentucky's style of play (fast, with a lot of 3s) and which players to keep an eye upon. Jason and Donald are especially interested in the big man matchups -- how Khaman handles Kentucky's hulking center Amari Williams and whether Kentucky PF Andrew Carr has any chance to contain Cooper Flagg. After the break, the guys dive into football team's 29-19 victory over NC State, a win that once again featured stellar defense from Duke. The victory gives Duke a sweep of its Triangle rivals for the first time since 2013 and Jason gives us the odds on how many games Duke will win this year? Ep 661#661 - Artillery Attack! Duke Defeats Army

The Blue Devils took care of business in resounding fashion against another overmatched opponent on Friday night, hitting the century mark as they defeated the Army Black Knights. When the threes weren't working, Duke pounded the glass to stake themselves to a nice lead. And then, when the threes began to fall, the rout was on. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks it all down from Manman's board dominance to a sterling showing by the Duke bench to Cooper's overall excellence (and his cramps). But, ever the analysts, Jason and Donald don't just focus on the good they saw, there is plenty of conversation about what Duke needs to work on as we prepare for much stiffer tests in coming weeks, including Kentucky in just a couple days. Army comes in 1-0 off a win over UAlbany to open the season, and they have some experience from several players who have been together for a few years. Ep 660#660 - Bear Mauling! Duke dominates Maine in season debut

Well, that was fun. Duke kicked off the season with a 36 point beatdown of the Maine Black Bears, a resilient and spunky team that was no match for the overwhelming talent and depth that Duke could put on the floor. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a breakdown of everything the happened in this contest, with special focus on the playmaking and all around excellence of freshman stars Kon Knueppel and Cooper Flagg. After telling you all about the good and bad from this game, co-hosts Jason Evans and Donald Wine also get into the action across the rest of college basketball on Monday including how every ACC team performed and a look at former Dukies who are now playing all over the country after entering the transfer portal. Oh, and the guys also reveal the winner of their headline contest. With over 100 entries it was not easy to pick which Duke fan would get to take home a Homefield Apparel Duke pullover jacket. DBR Bites #65 - 2 Duke recruits and a Miami preview

The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup has a full plate of stuff to fill you up. It starts with a preview of Duke football's big game this weekend against Miami. Donald Wine is an expert on the 'Canes and tells us everything we need to know about the toughest game on Duke's schedule this season. Up next, we preview a pair of big recruiting decisions being announced this weekend. Shelton Henderson and Acaden Lewis have each taken official visits in the past couple weeks and the DBR podcast breaks down what they could decide this weekend. Here's a hint, we think at least one of them will be picking Duke. And, after a break, it is time to talk about Dukies getting paid -- both Cooper Flagg's history-making deal with Gatorade and some Dukies in the NBA who are having pretty good weeks. Ep 658#658 - Season Preview: The Stats Game

It is a Duke Basketball Roundup tradition, our way of previewing the regular season -- the stats game. And we welcome in an old friend to help us out with the preview -- Sam Klein is back to run the game and tabulate all of Jason and Donald's predictions. Of course, seeing as Sam has not been on the podcast in a while, he's dying to talk and it takes a good 13 minutes to get to the part of the show where we actually begin the season preview by making educated guesses about stuff like -- who will lead Duke in scoring; how many road wins will the team have; how many double-doubles will Cooper Flagg have; how many minutes will Isaiah Evans play; how many different guys will be starters at some point; and (Donald's favorite) how many times will Duke score 100+ points in a game. Ep 657#657 - Raining 3s in The Brotherhood Run!

E

The Duke Blue Devils defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils Sunday night in The Brotherhood Run charity exhibition, and Scott Rich joins us to help break down all the good that happened on Episode 657. Duke beat Arizona State 103-47 in Bobby Hurley’s first time back in Cameron as a head coach. There was a lot to cover, and Jason, Donald, and Scott go through everything that Duke did well and even some of the things that could have been better. Duke scored 66 points in the second half, which is more than 18 of Duke’s opponents last year had in the entire game. It was led by shooting and, more importantly, by defense. After the break, Jason has to go, but Donald and Scott recap Duke Football’s crushing overtime loss to SMU. Despite 6 takeaways, Duke somehow lost the game. Donald and Scott discuss what went wrong for the Blue Devils and how the game felt like an opportunity to enter the national conversation that was missed. Ep 656#656 - Surprise commitments and weekend previews

We were expecting Episode 656 to be a lighter one, but the commitment of Nik Khamenia to Duke has us excited!! Yesterday, Jason and Donald were not expecting to see Nik Khamenia pick Duke as his college of choice, but he did! The #19 recruit in the 247 Sports rankings and #35 in the ESPN100, Khamenia is a hooper with a smart game. We discuss what he brings to next year’s Blue Devils and how he could play alongside the Boozer twins. Next up are previews, and we first discuss Duke Men’s Basketball’s upcoming exhibition against the Arizona State Sun Devils. It’s Bobby Hurley’s return to Cameron as a coach, and he brings a squad that has been reloaded with several transfers and one stud freshman. While Duke figures out its combinations, it will be great to see Hurley (and his son) back in Cameron for a nice exhibition. Duke Football has its toughest test of the season to date on Saturday night when they take on the SMU Mustangs. SMU has a prolific offense that puts up over 40 points per game and averages almost a first down every time they snap the ball. We take you through how Duke can pull off the upset over the #22 team in the country. Finally, the NBA season tipped off last night, and once again there are two dozen members of The Brotherhood representing Duke in the Association. We discuss some of the players that changed teams and who we’re keeping an eye on as the season begins. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #64 - Bye Bye Bennett

It is the story that sent shockwaves through the ACC and all of college basketball. Virginia coach Tony Bennett deciding to retire from the game just days before the start of the 2024-25 regular season. The Duke Basketball Roundup crew have many thoughts on what Tony Bennett said about his decision and what he kept quiet. Jason and Donald also weigh in on the timing of Bennett's retirement, leaving his players and his program less than two weeks before the games get underway. After the break, the podcast crew dives into the ACC's preseason awards. Only one Duke name showed up on the All-ACC teams... and how on earth did some no-name freshman from California get a vote for rookie of the year when Cooper Flagg and so many other notable newcomers are out there? Ep 655#655 - DBR Live! A very special exhibition recap

Here on the DBR Podcast, we get by with a little help from our friends. Jason and Donald welcome in dozens of fans of the podcast to their first ever live podcast. It was a huge weekend of Duke sports so there is plenty to talk about. It all begins with a recap of the exhibition win over Lincoln. The podcast crew (and friends) enjoyed the coming out party of Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel (who we are nicknaming Kon Ktripple). The guys also saw very positive things from Tyrese, Manman, and Maliq as Duke unveiled a lethal attack and also showed themselves to be a team full of long, pesky defenders. I mean, how can you not enjoy a 50+ point beatdown? After the break, the party continues with a look at the big, big football win on Friday, Duke's first ever victory over Florida State and a statement making win that ensures Duke is bowl eligible. There is much praised for the resiliency of this crew, especially the impressive defense. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 654#654 - Previewing Lincoln and FSU

We’re back with Episode 654 as Duke Basketball and Football both are in action this weekend! First, Jason and Donald preview Duke Men’s Basketball’s first exhibition of the season this weekend when they take on the Lincoln (PA) Lions. They’re led by former NC State standout Julius Hodge, who makes his return to Cameron. The duo discusses what to expect from Lincoln, what look they can present to Duke, and what they’re looking to see from the Blue Devils as they prepare for the regular season. Remember, after the exhibition game against Lincoln (PA) this weekend, Saturday at 4:00pm ET, we will be conducting a live show via Zoom, and DBR listeners are invited! To join the show on Saturday, head to TinyURL dot com slash DBR Zoom! Bring your headlines, bring your questions, wear your favorite Duke gear, and you will be a part of our first live episode! After the break, Duke Football has a huge game against Florida State, a team they haven’t beaten on the football field since the Seminoles joined the ACC. FSU is reeling, with a 1-5 record, but that doesn’t mean they will be pushovers on Friday night before a sold out Wallace Wade Stadium. Duke will need to execute, and we discuss how the Blue Devils can get the job done, beat FSU, and become bowl eligible. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 653#653 - Polls, Polls, Polls!!

The AP has released its preseason polls and Ken Pomery also has his rankings up. We discuss them all on Episode 653! The AP released their men’s preseason poll yesterday, and the Duke Blue Devils will begin the season as the #7 team in the country. Jason and Donald discuss whether that’s a good spot for the Blue Devils and what the voters may have been looking for when assessing teams at the start of the year. Duke also has a loaded schedule, and it’s represented pretty heavily in these rankings. Ken Pomeroy also released his preseason rankings yesterday, and Duke is much better according to KenPom: they check in at #2 there. Of course, we compare the difference between what the computers are seeing and what differs from what the college basketball writers who make up the AP poll are valuing. The ACC should be much better this season, but while they didn’t have a ton in the top 25, there are several NCAA tournament caliber teams in the conference that Duke will face this year. After the break, we discuss the Duke Women, who appear at #11 in the first AP women’s poll of the season. The ACC is loaded, and Duke is the 3rd highest ranked team in the conference. A lot of respect is being shown to Kara Lawson and her squad, and for good reason! We discuss the team, who they will see this season in a tough schedule, and how they could do. Finally, we’re going to do it! After the exhibition game against Lincoln (PA) this weekend, Saturday at 4:00pm ET, we will be conducting a live show via Zoom, and all you listeners are invited! Ep 652#652 - Boozer Brothers Pick Duke!

Big news Friday morning as Duke landed its first two recruits of the 2025 class and they are quite the pair. Cameron and Cayden Boozer, Carlos Boozers twin sons, picked Duke over Miami and Florida in a recruiting race that was a lot closer and more mysterious than casual fans may think. The DBR podcast is here to break down what each of these 5-star players will mean for the Duke program. They also point out why this was an especially important recruiting win for Jon Scheyer. After the break, Jason and Donald talk about a comment by Coach Scheyer at ACC Media Day that might reveal something going on behind the scenes with the team's rotations and player positions. And there is one more important piece of news -- the Duke Basketball Roundup is going to stage its first ever live episode on Saturday October 19th at 4pm ET, about an hour after the exhibition game is over. Stay tuned for more details about how you can join the guys in a Zoom room and be a part of DBR Podcast history! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 651#651 - Notes from a Duke Practice

The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup contains part two of Jason's weekend at Duke. First up, he talks about the Dribble for Victory over Cancer and a stunning display of friendship from the folks who make up the DBR community. Fans of the podcast turned out in droves both to support this important charity and to spend some time chatting with Jason. The day also included a peek at a Duke practice and the DBR Podcast host came away with a few controversial takes... including his assessment of how deep Duke will go and which guys appear to be in the main rotation at this early point in the preseason. Oh, and you don't want to miss Jason's play-by-play of what happened when Kon went one-on-one with Flagg and Sion! After the break, the Roundup gang has some intel on Duke recruiting. There were three big-time prospects on campus this weekend and Jason got to spend some time chatting with some of their parents. We also look ahead to a big announcement on Thursday when the Boozer twins will make their college choice between Duke and Miami. This is one of the most dramatic recruiting mysteries in a while and, frankly, we have no idea what Cameron and Cayden are going to do. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Ep 650#650 - What We Learned at Countdown

We all got our first real and unedited peek at the 24-25 Blue Devils on Friday at Countdown to Craziness... and the Duke Basketball Roundup was in the house (Cameron) for the event. Join Jason and Donald as they talk about a somewhat shaky start that led to an explosive ending in the Blue-White scrimmages. The guys break down all the positives and negatives they saw from the team and Jason, who was courtside, has a theory why Caleb Foster struggled at first and then took off later on. The guys also talk a bit about the pregame festivities and the various choices the players made for their introductions to the Cameron crowd. After the break, the DBR crew gets into the first football loss of the season, a tough loss to a good Ga Tech team that came from behind in the fourth quarter. Despite suffering the L, it feels like the football team is proving it belongs among the better teams in the ACC. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup includes a conversation with one of the beat reporters covering Duke hoops. Rodd Baxley of USA Today and the Fayetteville Observer has sources inside the program and has been on campus recently to check out how the preseason is going for the team. He gives us his take on how things are shaping up as we discuss how deep Duke will go, who the starters might be, and which players are impressing the coaches so far. Rodd also covers UNC and NC State so we could not let him go without getting a little bit of info about our local rivals as well. After the break. DBR Bites #63 - Crushing Carolina!

Nothing could be finer than beating Carolina! The Victory Bell is back where it belongs as the football Blue Devils used an inspired second half effort to crush UNC 21-20. The Duke Basketball Roundup is here to meet you football needs as Scott Rich joins Jason Evans to talk about this remarkable victory that sends the Blue Devils to 5-0 on the gridiron. Their conversation starts with the amazing willpower of Star Thomas at RB and includes plenty of praise for the impressive Duke defense that utterly bottled up UNC vaunted offensive attack. It was a huge victory that cements, for the moment, Duke's spot as the best football team in the state. After the break, Jason and Scott have a little bit of basketball news to puzzle through... the injury status of Patrick NGongba is up first but they the guys get to some surprising position rotations that happened at a recent Duke practice. You'll never guess what position Cooper Flagg is working out at. Last but not least, we are in the final days for you to make a donation to fight pediatric cancer through the Duke Dribble for Victory. DBR Bites #62 - Intel from inside a Duke practice

On the heels of the schedule being announced (if you missed episode #648, go back and check it out) the DBR Podcast has gotten some intel about how the early practices are going for the Blue Devils... and the info is really intriguing. College hoops reporter Jon Rothstein got a peek at a Duke practice this week and he says Kon Kneuppel and Darren Harris both looked fabulous and Cooper Flagg is like nothing he has seen in a long, long time. Rothstein also guesses at what Duke's starting lineup will be... and his guess will really surprise you. After the break, Jason and Donald take a deep dive into the latest episode of the Brotherhood Podcast, featuring a conversation between CFos and Tyrese Proctor. The backcourt mates have a revealing talk about how the team is coming together and what feels different from the past couple years. Ep 648#648 - The Schedule Is Here!

The full 2024-2025 ACC schedules have dropped for men’s and women’s basketball, and we are quick to react to the Duke schedules on Episode 648! We first start with the men’s schedule, where we take a look at how it shakes up for a Duke team with high expectations. We discuss the Saturday-Monday doubles and while they may be as favorable as we could hope for, Duke has more than the rest of the ACC. We then get into where some of the tough stretches may be, from being on the road for the first two ACC games to a nostalgic Tobacco Road stretch in the middle of the schedule that brings you back to the 9-team (or 7-team) ACC days. January also is a time where Duke will spend most of its days at home after a loaded November and December. After the break, we discuss some of the rest of the ACC teams and their schedule. Duke’s schedule is tougher than most, including almost all of the teams that are expected to be true contenders. Still, we have expected competition and we will get it with this schedule. We then turn to the Duke women, who have a extremely difficult schedule that includes a ton of true road games and the ACC ending a tradition at the end of the regular season for no real reason. DBR Bites #61 - Undefeated Devils prepare for Carolina

The Duke football team stands at 4-0 after putting a beatdown on Middle Tennessee State to the tune of 45-17. Duke dominated this one from early on forcing three first quarter turnovers and turning each of them into TDs to stake an big lead that only grew as the game moved along. The Duke Basketball Roundup digs deep into what Duke was doing right in this contest, especially on the defensive side of the ball. After the break, Jason and Donald look ahead to the first ACC contest of the season, Duke hosting the hated TarHeels. UNC has been kinda mid all season thus far and really stunk up the joint over the weekend when they lost to James Madison 70-50... yes., that is a football score. The DBR Podcast gang has a discussion about what has been going wrong for Mack Brown's boys. Last but not least, we have an update on the Duke Dribble for Victory event to fight pediatric cancer. Ep 646#646 - Duke Football squeaks by UConn, but needs to improve

The Duke Blue Devils were able to win on the football field over the weekend, but on Episode 646 of the Duke Basketball Roundup, we know we need to get better. Duke was able to beat the UConn Huskies 26-21, the 3rd straight week that Duke scored 26 points. There were definitely some guys who had standout performances, but Donald and Jason know that improvement is a must as the calendar continues to move. We break down some of the things that need to improve as the Blue Devils turn their attention to this Saturday’s game against Middle Tennessee. After the break, AJ Griffin is reportedly considering stepping away from the game of basketball. We don’t know anything official yet, but we offer some encouraging words to the beloved member of The Brotherhood, no matter what he ultimately decides to do. Finally, we salute an absolute legend in the Duke community, as we discuss the passing of Dean Gerald Wilson. He served as an advisor and mentor to thousands of students over his 60 years, including Donald and Jason. They both reflect on his life of service to Duke and how he personally shaped their lives. DBR Bites #60 - The Brotherhood’s Back In The House!

On DBR Bites #60, we preview Duke’s upcoming game against UConn and we celebrate so many members of The Brotherhood coming back to campus! First, we preview Duke’s upcoming football game against UConn this weekend. UConn is a team that struggled mightily against Maryland but turned it around against Merrimack. Donald and Jason discuss what to watch for when the two teams take the field as well as what UConn brings to the table. There are a couple of skill players to watch as well as who could be under center for the Huskies. After the break, we get into some basketball stuff, led by a cool event that will be on campus on October 5th. Jason will be down at Duke for Dribble for Victory Over Cancer, an event that raises money for pediatric cancer research. Jason has created a DBR Podcast fundraising team, so join us to try and raise some money for a great cause! We then get into the latest Duke Blue Planet episode, where tons of basketball alums returned to campus for one fun weekend. But, the episode has an inadvertent focus on Khaman Maluach in a really cool way, as you see how his interactions with Dereck Lively and his coaches shows how coachable he is and how quickly he learns. DBR Bites #59 - Duke Claims 2OT Victory at the Lake House

On DBR Bites #59, we recap Duke’s victory over Northwestern on the edge of Lake Michigan! Duke won 26-20 in a 2OT affair in Evanston, and there were some good and ugly parts about the whole game. Donald and Jason begin by resurrecting a fan favorite for basketball games: Headlines! We’ll be accepting them for football games as well, so don’t forget to email us at [email protected] with your headlines after each football game moving forward! We then get into what we liked and disliked about the game, and there were some key plays on offense and defense that led to Duke’s comeback win. No matter how ugly the game felt for the first 3.9 quarters, they were able to get to overtime and then win it with some key plays from our wide receivers. We also sing praises to the defense for keeping Duke in the game with some great plays and once again getting tackles in the backfield at a tremendous clip. After the break, the rest of the ACC had an up-and-down week, but there were some teams that had wins against P4 conference opponents that were noteworthy. The ACC needs to continue to get wins against the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12 to help the conference when it comes time for the playoff and also some of these other bowl games. DBR Bites #58 - Friday Night Lakeview Football!

Duke Football is back on the field Friday night, and we preview their game against the Northwestern Wildcats on DBR Bites #58! Northwestern is in some new temporary digs right on the edge of Lake Michigan, and that will be the stage for a Friday night game against Duke. Donald and Jason begin the preview by discussing what we will see from Northwestern’s players. They’re led by a quarterback in Mike Wright that’s a dual threat option, throwing the ball in the air and leading the Wildcats in rushing in Week 1. There are some other skill players on the offensive and defensive sides of the football that Duke will focus on, but Northwestern hopes to combine options with quick throws to move the ball down the field. After the break, we discuss some of the things Duke needs to do well in order to win on the road, and it starts with establishing the run. Duke wants to improve on their rushing performance against Elon, as that could open up the rest of the offense. On defense, Duke will hope to contain Wright, particularly on the run, and force their offense off the field. Our offense can move the ball quickly and can tire out Northwestern’s defense. Finally, Jason and Donald predict that a pair of Duke’s experienced wideouts could have a big night and it’s one of the keys to Duke getting the win in Evanston. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 645#645 - Football Eliminates Elon

The Manny Diaz era got off to a great start at Duke walloped the Elon in this season's opening game. The Duke Basketball Roundup gives you a complete breakdown of what happened in the contest and it all starts with the dominant defense on display from Duke. Donald and Jason both want to talk about how many times Duke stopped the Phoenix with a sack or a tackle for loss. On the offensive side of the ball, Maalik Murphy was airing it out in a way we rarely see from Duke QBs, showing off his arm strength on his way to nearly 300 yards passing. After the break, Jason and Donald spend a bit of time on basketball. Duke Blue Planet has released its first episode of the season with a look at the Brotherhood Games, an Olympic-style competition that was dominated by CFos, K2, and Stanley Borden. There is a sentence we did not expect to write this year. The DBR Pod also dives into a bit of recruiting news as the Boozer twins were on campus this weekend. Ep 644#644 - Flagg's Bag

Cooper Flagg has scored what is said to be one of the biggest endorsement deals ever for a kid who has not even played a second of college basketball, signing with New Balance, a company with deep ties to his home state of Maine. On the latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup, Jason and Donald take a look at Flagg's bag (of money) and what qualities it is that make him such an attractive player. The guys also get into the remarkable story of how Khaman Maluach ended up at Duke and how a coin flip that Duke lost plays into the decision. And, after the break, it is time for us to preview the first game of the football season as Duke takes on Elon. The Manny Diaz era is here and we are super psyched for it! DBR Bites #57 - Bobby Hurley's coming to Cameron!

We’re back with a few topics on DBR Bites #57! Jason and Donald are super excited...Bobby Hurley is returning to Duke! Duke will play a charity exhibition against Arizona State in what will be the first trip to Cameron for Hurley as a coach. They’ve known this was in the works, but now we get to finally celebrate Hurley’s return to campus. Jason and Donald also discuss Duke Women playing a multi-team event in Vegas around the same time the men will be there. It sets up nicely for fans traveling to see both our teams play. On the other hand, the NIL tournament that is being set up in Vegas is in some serious danger due to the NCAA dropping some warnings about what is allowed and not allowed with regards to “pay for play” NIL. After the break, Bryce Davis has flipped his football commitment from Clemson to Duke, becoming one of the most heralded recruits in Duke Football history. We discuss the ramifications of this level of recruit coming to Durham. We end with the reports that UConn could be once again trying to find a new home with the Big XII. Ep 643#643 - Non-con Schedule Released

Duke has released the non-conference schedule for the 2024-25 Blue Devils and it is full of compelling and challenging matchups. The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup takes a deep dive into the sked -- not just the marquis games against teams like Kentucky and Kansas, but also what Duke faces in some of the smaller teams like George Mason and Incarnate Word. After the break, Jason and Donald play a little draft game -- pick a team (5 starters plus a sub) from the best players of the past half-decade of Duke hoops (2020-2024). Jason's first pick may surprise you but there is sound logic behind it. However, his pick allows Donald to jump on the guy who is almost certainly the best Duke player of the past 5 years. Jai gives us a candid, insiders view of how the team is shaping up for the 2024-25 season including exclusive details on why Kon Knueppel is wowing everyone and what it is about Cooper Flagg that makes him different from other trop recruits. Ep 641#641 - Is Duke's experience the key to success?

We are live with Episode 641 as we welcome Scott Rich to the show to help us navigate some interesting topics! Jason is out on vacation, but thankfully Scott is here to take us through some topics with Duke Blue Devils Basketball. First, Duke’s experience has been a topic of conversation all summer long. But how does it rank among Duke teams from previous years? Pretty well, actually! We discuss some of the data and whether it means that Duke will be successful this season. We also learned that Duke has another confirmed game on the non-conference schedule, as Wofford will be coming to town on November 16th. It adds to what is shaping up to be a pretty awesome schedule with some really tough tests for Duke. Scott and Donald are pretty happy with what Jon Scheyer is trying to do in scheduling some of these teams. After the break, we switch to the gridiron, as the ACC preseason poll was released. Duke was picked to finish 11th in the conference, and we discuss whether it is a reasonable place or if Duke should get more love. Also, Kenny Blakeney is hoping to raise some money for the Howard basketball program, and he’s doing it in an outside-the-box way: offering 1/3 of the program for $100 million. We discuss on whether he will be able to do it and what this creative idea would mean for not just the HBCUs, but also mid-major and low-major programs in college sports. We end by congratulating Lindsey Harding and Mistie Bass-Boyd for making moves to new positions in the NBA. Harding will serve as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Lakers under head coach JJ Redick, while Trajan Langdon has hired Bass-Boyd to the front office of the Detroit Pistons. Ep 640#640 - On the recruiting trail with On3's Jamie Shaw

It's time to talk some Duke recruiting on Episode 640! On this episode, we're joined by On3's Jamie Shaw to dive into how recruiting is going for Duke this offseason and who are some of the players we hope to see in Duke Blue in 2025. Duke has cast a wide net in recruiting this offseason, with 13 players of the Class of 2025 already receiving scholarship offers to come to Durham. Jamie gives us the players that are the primary focus at this point in time, and whether the focus is on a smaller freshman class coupled with the transfer portal or the goal is to bring in as many great freshman as we can. We also discuss how NIL may have rocketed up the importance list when trying to land the next great Duke players out of high school. Jamie gives us some names to remember as well as how Jon Scheyer and the staff are so good at convincing the best players in the country to come to the Gothic Wonderland. It's a great interview with some excellent insight into the process and how things have changed in the era of the portal and NIL. After the break, the date for Countdown to Craziness has been announced, and it's an early one: October 4th! DBR Bites #56 - Intel from Cooper

A trio of topics on this latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup. Up first is the 2024 Summer Olympics. Jason and Donald recount some of their favorite moments so far before diving into the controversy over Jayson Tatum not playing in Team USA's first game. If you are here for outrage, you will hear at least a little bit of it. Up next, the podcast guys dive into the changes coming to NIL and especially to scholarship limits in the NCAA. This whole thing seems like a never-ending topic but the latest changes are quite significant to the future of college sports. And after the break, Jason and Donald give their favorite moments from the latest edition of the Brotherhood Podcast featuring a remarkably revealing interview with Cooper Flagg. What Cooper says about himself and his teammates reveals a lot about the makeup of this team and how it is trying to sculpt itself into a championship club. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 639#639 - The computer that says Duke is #2

The latest edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a look at the rankings of Bart Torvik, who plugged a whole bunch of data into his computer and asked it to give him an analytical preseason ranking of every team in college basketball. It spat out two teams at the very top of the heap, the Houston Cougars and the Duke Blue Devils. It even projects how many points per game Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, and Kon Kneuppel will average next season. But, before that look at ones and zeroes, the podcast gang has a long conversation about the wild, wild west that is the current NIL landscape. Friend of the podcast Brendan Marks has helped write an article for The Athletic that takes a deep dive into the truth and lies behind NIL and the transfer portal, with some eye-opening anecdotes. The DBR guys give you their takeaways from a revealing and troubling look at how college basketball has been fundamentally changed over the past couple years... and the changes show no signs of slowing down. Ep 638#638 - Blue Devils head to the Olympics

After some time off, we’re back with Episode 638 as we get ready for the Olympics! The Olympics begin this week, and Jason and Donald go through all of the Duke Blue Devils who will be competing and coaching in the Summer Games. Short of ACC newcomers Stanford and Cal, Duke is sending the most athletes in the conference to Paris, which is really cool. We focus in on Khaman Maluach’s performance against the USA in a basketball exhibition where South Sudan almost had the monumental upset. Maluach showed some good things and some things to work on, and Jason and Donald break down all that he did and how it could translate to Duke. After the break, we discuss NBA Summer League and DJ Steward absolutely balling out for the Chicago Bulls. He did so well that he earned a two-way contract for this coming season, which is really cool! He follows a line of Blue Devils who have recently found their way into the NBA via unconventional paths, like through the G League. We’re glad that Steward is getting an opportunity to play for the Bulls this season. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 637#637 - Draft Express' Jon Chepkevich discusses Duke NBA prospects

We’re back with Episode 637, where we are joined by Jon Chepkevich of Draft Express to discuss some Duke Blue Devils and their NBA prospects! Recently, Sion James and Tyrese Proctor competed at the CP3 Elite Camp, while Kon Knueppel and Isaiah Evans attended the Jayson Tatum Elite Camp, and Chepkevich was present at both to view the athletes. We go through each of the players one by one, breaking down what they did well at the camps, what they can improve on, and their current draft prospects according to Draft Express. Chepkevich also has seen a lot of Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, and we take the time to go through their pros and cons. Both are expected to be high draft picks, with Flagg being #1, so it’s good to get an outside perspective about their abilities and how they could improve at Duke. After we say goodbye to Jon, Cooper Flagg has really broken out with his stellar play at USA Basketball training camp on the USA Select Team. We review some of the footage that we saw coming out of the scrimmages, and make no mistake: we have some of the best players on the planet now saying that Cooper Flagg is the real deal. DBR Bites #54 - More practice intel!

The 2024-25 Duke Blue Devils are in the gym for summer workouts, and we have some intel from one of the practices courtesy of a listener! We discuss what we learned on DBR Bites Episode 54. Jason was able to speak to one of our listeners, who gave us some fantastic information about a practice they were allowed to watch. We go through each of the players and discuss what our listener saw from them. And there are some general insights on how the team looked and what some of the themes may be this season. One thing's for sure: we're going to learn a lot more about this team as the summer goes along! After the break, Cooper Flagg is leaving Duke to play for another team. That team: the USA Select team, which is a group of players who help the USA Basketball team prepare for the Olympics. Cooper's the only non-pro on the team and has made the team before playing a second of college basketball. It's a huge honor and we are excited at Cooper getting able to go up against some of the best players in the world and learn from them. Make sure you’re following us!
