#767 - Home Opener is an Easy Win
Duke crushed Carolina on Saturday... no, not that Carolina, the Western variety. The Blue Devil defense overwhelmed the Catamounts, holding them scoreless for 7 minutes early in the first half to make it an easy afternoon of hoops watching for Duke fans. The Boozer brothers, both of them, were the stars of this one and the Duke Basketball Roundup podcast has a breakdown of all the things they did to help Duke to a convincing victory. Also on this episode, the podcast dudes talk about a tough loss for the football team at UConn. It was an exciting, back-and-forth game that wasn't decided until the final seconds. Perhaps more importantly for Duke football, a couple other top ACC teams lost on Saturday meaning the the door to the ACC championship game is wide open for the football Blue Devils. Just win baby and it will all happen! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
#766- An Underdog view of the Blue Devils
Whether you know what a Catamount is or not, you always need to respect your opponent. That's why the Duke Basketball Roundup takes time before every single Duke basketball game to preview the team coming up next on the calendar. But, before Jason and Donald get to their lookahead at Western Carolina, they welcome longtime basketball writer and host of The Underdogs Podcast, Jordan Brenner to the show. You may recall a year ago that Jordan made regular appearances on the DBR Pod to talk about how he saw Duke progressing and growing. Once again this year he will come on the pod every now and then to provide expert commentary on the growth of Jon Scheyer's latest team. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 765#765 - Second Half Surge Steers Duke Over Longhorns
The Duke Blue Devils were able to surge in the second half to defeat the Texas Longhorns in the Dick Vitale Invitational, and we recap the first game of the season on Episode 765. Donald and Jason begin with the headlines from a game that was a tale of two halves in many respects. We then get into the good stuff, from the team defense to Cam Boozer’s second half to Isaiah Evans hitting a bushel of 3s to keep Duke moving forward. We love some of the things we saw and the fight we showed in once again overcoming a slower start. We then get into the things to improve, and there were plenty from the first official game of the season. The team will certainly look to get better as they dive head on into the season, with Western Carolina the next test this weekend. Make sure you’re following us! #764 - Clemson thriller and Texas preview
The Duke Basketball Roundup dives into one of the most thrilling college football games of the year as Duke took down Clemson 46-45. Manny Diaz needs to be nicknamed "stones" for the gutsy calls he made on 4th down and in going for 2 to win the game. Jason and Donald loved it and, because it all worked, he looks like a genius ;) After the break, the "basketball" part of the podcast kicks into high gear as the guys preview Duke's first game of the regular season, a tilt in Charlotte agains the Texas Longhorns. Listen in to hear what Texas brings back from last year's tourney team and what they added via the portal. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
#763 - Season preview with the annual Stats Game!
With the pre-season games done and the first match that counts just a few days away, it is time for the Duke Basketball Roundup's annual season preview via the Stats Game. As we do every year, we bring back former co-host Sam Klein to steer us through this discussion of how various players will do in all kinds of statistical categories. It is a great way of making bold predictions about what kind of season Duke will have. Wait until you hear some of the guesses about Cameron Boozer triple doubles?!?!?! DBR Bites #119: Maxime Meyer to Duke!
We’re back with DBR Bites 119 to discuss Jon Scheyer landing his second recruit of the Class of 2026! Maxime Meyer made a surprise announcement this afternoon that he was committing to the Blue Devils, and Donald and Jason quickly discuss the addition of Meyer to next year’s roster. The 7’1” Canadian center has been moving up the ranks quickly, and there’s a lot to like about the upside he possesses. After the break, we touch on the disappointing news of Kyle Singler’s arrest for his alleged role in a dispute with his girlfriend. We’ve sadly had to discuss Kyle Singler’s mental struggles that have continued to persist for most of the year, and this news only adds to the hole that Singler needs to emerge from, and we’re hoping he starts with the help he needs to turn it around. Finally, a note: check your feeds on Friday. The 2025-26 Stats Game will be dropped then as we get ready for the start of the basketball season! Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #118: A Big Game In Death Valley
The DBR Podcast crew is back with DBR Bites 118 to preview Duke Football’s upcoming trip this weekend to Death Valley to take on Clemson! The Blue Devils are back on the football field this weekend after their final bye week of the season, and we’re headed down to take on the Clemson Tigers in a pivotal matchup. Donald and Jason have the things to watch for in that game, where Clemson is out of the ACC Championship Game race but Duke still has an outside chance to make it. Duke’s offense has been good, but the team needs to get off to a good start if they want to beat Clemson on the road for the first time in a long time. After the break, we get into some of The Brotherhood playing in the NBA. The Brotherhood is representing on the roster, coaching staff, or front office of 23 of 30 NBA teams, so as the season gets underway, there is probably a team near you with Duke representation! #762- Rocky Topped: Cam Boozer bulldozes the Volunteers
Well, that was fun! Duke went on the road to a raucous Tennessee and bested the Volunteers 83-76. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a full breakdown on one of the most impressive pre-season victories in the land as Duke's Cameron Boozer put up an outragous 20-20 with 24 points and 23 rebounds. But this wasn't just the Cam show. Duke got key contributions on both sides of the ball from all up and down the lineup and the DBR team are just the folks to guide you through it. DBR Bites #117: On The Road To Knoxville
We return with DBR Bites 117 as we preview the second and final exhibition game for Duke when they take on Tennessee on the road this weekend. Duke has a big preseason test in the road trip to face the Volunteers, a team that is always tough to play. Donald and Jason break down what they’re looking for from this game, from the Tennessee players to what Duke needs to learn from this road trip. The hope is that the team continues to elevate their game as they have their final dress rehearsal before the season starts. After the break, we also get into the recent announcement of a couple of G-League players being allowed to play NCAA basketball. It’s a controversial move and once again, the NCAA has created another free-for-all in recruitment that they could have put strict requirements on to control it. It’s another weird rule that has a chance to spiral into something the NCAA may not necessarily want. Make sure you’re following us! #761 - Cameron dominates in Cameron in preseason victory
It was just an exhibition, just his first game ever against fellow collegians, but Cameron Boozer looked like a truly special player as Duke pulled away in the second half to beat Central Florida 96-71. Just like they do with every game, the Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down all the good things to takeaway from this contest as well as the parts of the game that were sources of concern. Several of the Duke youngsters get singled out for major praise by Jason and Donald, but we know there is still plenty for Jon Scheyer to teach this squad. Up next is a big exhibition contest against Tennessee... more on that later! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #116 - EMERGENCY POD: Bryson Howard is a Blue Devil!
We know you are probably focused on Duke's first preseason game against Central Florida but the Duke Basketball Roundup could not let a huge recruiting win go by unmentioned. On Tuesday afternoon, Duke landed the first recruit of the class of 2026, 6-5 wing Bryson Howard. The son of former Wake Forest star Josh Howard was down to Duke, Kentucky, and UNC but he chose the right shade of blue in the end. Howard is an elite defender and a light-out long-range shooter. He shot up the recruiting rankings over the summer and now finds himself knocking on the door of the top 10. Jon Scheyer has landed a special player... one who seems to want to spend a couple seasons, at least, in Durham. Listen in as the DBR podcast gang (featuring Scott Rich in a guest role) breaks it all down for you. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 760#760 - Gridiron Woes and Brotherhood Runs
We are back with Episode 760 as Donald and Jason recap some football and get us ready for some basketball! Duke Football suffered a loss over the weekend to Georgia Tech, and we begin the episode with our recap of that game. It was a game where mistakes were the difference and it was a game that was very much winnable for Duke. However, with the loss, they no longer control their own destiny in the race for the ACC championship game, despite some other teams taking a stumble this weekend. The team will definitely have some things to work on during the bye week before they travel to Clemson. Make sure you’re following us! With a slew of preseason polls and rankings appearing in the past few days, the Duke Basketball Roundup brings on one of the top analytical gurus around, Evan Miyakawa, owner of EvanMiya.com. Tune in to hear him break down what it is about this Duke team that he thinks makes them one of the top contenders for the national title. Oh, and Duke fans are going to really love what he has to say about Jon Scheyer versus Hubert Davis. UNC fans... not so much. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #115 - Meet the Duke C.B.O., Jayson Tatum
Just days after Jon Scheyer told the Countdown crowd that Jayson Tatum would be involved with this year's Duke team, it has been formally announced that the First Team All-NBA superstar will be Duke's first ever Chief Basketball Officer. This is huge news for the program and prompted the Duke Basketball Roundup team to hop on a pod to talk about it. Tatum makes it clear that he wants to take an active role in the lives and development of the Duke players. Who better to teach you how to reach the very top of the basketball world than a guy who is standing right there at this very moment? After the break, Jason (Evans) and Donald get into a couple other items of note... Jon Scheyer signing a new contract extension to stay in Durham and the train wreck that is Bill Belichick and UNC football. Grab your popcorn and enjoy the latest edition of DBR Bites. Do you know what "playing off two feet" means in basketball? Well, you sure will after listening to this edition of the Duke Basketball Roundup. #755 - Duke Squeezes The Orange Of All Its Juice
Duke Football demolished the Syracuse Orange 38-3 over the weekend, and we’re here to react to it on Episode 755! Donald and Jason are here to take you through a recap of the thorough beatdown of the Orange, beginning with the defense pitching a near shutout on the afternoon. Their pride in playing tough defense all the way down to the final series was something to behold. We also get into the offense, led by Nate Sheppard’s more than 200 all-purpose yards. He was a monster with the ball in his hands, and the rest of the offense did great as well. Despite the lopsided score, it wasn’t a perfect game. We get into the stuff to work on as they get ready to head to the West Coast to face Cal next weekend. But, if you look at Duke’s schedule, things are lining up well for them. Duke invited the media to come ask questions of the coaches and players this week and the Duke Basketball Roundup was there... ok, not exactly. Neither Jason nor Donald could make it, but they called in Carl Heimel of The Vector to go in their place. Carl sits down with podcast gang to talk about the Q&A that he heard as well as the general vibes around the program these days. Listen in to find out which guys worked hard on their bodies in the off-season and the "secret sauce" that Jon Scheyer says gives Duke a leg up on every other program in the country. We’re back with Episode 753, where Donald and Jason catch up on some basketball and football news! The biggest news of the week is the announcement of Kara Lawson becoming the new head coach for USA Women’s Basketball. It’s an incredible moment for Kara, for USA Basketball, and for Duke. We discuss some of the positive things that could be coming for the Duke Women’s program as a result. Duke Football is back on the field this weekend as they travel to take on Syracuse. After the break, the DBR Podcast crew looks at some other results around the ACC and they talk about Donald's homecoming weekend at which he was honored by the Duke alumni association. #751 - NCSU Preview + Why Duke Hasn't Gotten a 2026 Recruit Yet
Duke football embarks on their ACC part of the schedule this weekend with a homecoming matchup against nearby NC State, a team that is 3-0 which has been... well... the polar opposite of Duke so far this year when it comes to playing mistake-free. The DBR Podcast crew has a preview of the big game. After the break, Jason and Donald dive into some basketball recruiting news... or rather the lack of news. They explain why Jon Scheyer and company (and most everyone else) have not landed any prized player from the high school senior class. Should you be worried about Duke's reputation as a recruiting juggernaut? Spoiler alert -- NO! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
#750 - Some intel on the Duke rotation
The back half of this episode will be a lot more fun than the front... The Duke Basketball Roundup gang (Jason and Scott this week) begin by diving into the Duke football loss to Tulane. Unlike the Illinois game, this one didn't feel like Duke got robbed as much as it did that Duke just didn't come to play. But, after the break the guys have some fun breaking down some notes on the Duke hoops team courtesy an article published this week by Brendan Marks of The Athletic. Jon Scheyer has some really interesting combinations to play with this upcoming season. Is the Blue-White game really less than 3 weeks away?!?! Learn more about your ad choices. From a trio of Saturday/Monday short rest games to a long road trip to the West Coast, Jason and Donald dig into the pitfalls and opportunities in every game. They also look at the rest of the league to try to find which teams got scheduling breaks and which ones have a tough road to ACC contender status. After the break, the guys dive into a little bit of silliness... who would you pick from Duke history to play by your side in a 3-on-3 matchup? Learn more about your ad choices. #748 - Feeling ill about football mental mistakes
EIf you look at most of the stats from Saturday's Duke-Illinois football game, it looks like a competitive contest... except for the final score. The DBR Podcast dives into what went wrong (duuuh, turnovers) and what Duke can do to fix it. We also look at a few other interesting results from across the college football landscape -- you will be sorry if you miss Jason's rant about Florida State. In the back half of the episode, the guys get into what "the money" sees as it looks ahead to the college basketball season. Who are the favorites to win the natty and the player of the year... and what odds can you get on any team going undefeated this season? Listen to the DBR Podcast to find out! Ep 745#747 - Recapping Week 1 of College Football
Duke Football took care of business against Elon in their opening game of the 2025 season as Week 1 kicked off with some exciting matchups! We welcome back Scott Rich on Episode 747 to take us through all of the big takeaways from the long weekend of football. Jason is returning home from vacation, so Scott and Donald take flight on this episode beginning by recapping Duke’s 45-17 win over Elon on Thursday night. Darian Mensah looked as advertised, and the passing game was pretty fun to watch as Duke eventually took control of the game in the second half. The running game had some good moments, but could still use some improvement. We discuss some of the other players who stood out in Duke’s win as we prepare for Illinois to come to town this weekend. We also get into the exciting opening weekend of college football, first with the ACC and then extending to the rest of the nation. Miami and Florida looked good in their big wins over the weekend, while we also laugh at UNC for getting trounced by TCU. The Jon Scheyer interview is completed, and Donald and Jason are still buzzing about it! On Episode 746, they break down some of their favorite portions of their chat with the Duke head coach. First, Emmanuel Dildy has been promoted to associate head coach, and there’s a quick discussion on this move. Then, we get to the full breakdown of the best parts of Jon Scheyer’s comments. We react to Scheyer’s thoughts on the non-conference schedule, Pat Ngongba, Cam Boozer potentially being a point forward, Maliq Brown’s motivational return from his shoulder injury last season, and what Scheyer feels is his best coaching move. The Duke Football team begins the 2025 season on Thursday night against Elon, and we’re ready to break down how the team is going to play. But we can’t do it alone. On Episode 744, we are proud to welcome Anna Snyder, the new Duke beat writer for the Fayetteville Observer, to the show! Anna has done an in depth look at the Duke team, and we get to know her and her ties to Duke before she began her role as Duke beat writer just a few weeks ago. We begin with the offense, led by standout transfer Darien Mensah at quarterback. We discuss who the key players will be at each position on the field as the offense tries to move the chains and score points. We get into the defense as well, which is led by preseason All-American Chandler Rivers. We highlight where the key positions will be and how the D will seek to keep their opponents out of the endzone and also try to give the offense short field via stops and takeaways. DBR Bites #113 - Reacting to Breaking NIL News!
EWe’re back with DBR Bites #113, where we had plans to continue our discussion of some news items...until breaking news came down. Donald and Jason begin their discussion with the report from a few days ago that power conferences had agreed to a deal that would allow for the clearinghouse created by the House settlement to proceed with approving more deals by NIL collectives. However, a few minutes into that discussion, news broke of a new order that would turn that agreement on its head. We react to the breaking news and what it could mean for the whirlwind that is the NIL marketplace. After the break (and a chance to collect our breath), we get into some new rules changes by the ACC that are meant to curtail court/field storming and the influence of gambling in the game. We end with a fun exercise on college football programs and their perceived valuations if they were pro teams. Stick around to see where Duke end up on that list. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #111 - We Have 5x5 Video to Overanalyze!!
We are back with DBR Bites #111 as we have some small news to cover before we get to our summer overanalysis of short video clips! Donald and Jason quickly go though a couple of news items, beginning with Cooper Flagg. After dropping 31 points in a Summer League game, the Dallas Mavericks decided to shut him down for the rest of the summer. It’s not a bad thing at all, and we discuss why it’s okay that he’s getting some rest. We also recap the latest episode of The Brotherhood Podcast, where Nik Khamenia was the featured guest. After the break, Duke Men’s Basketball dropped some video highlights from a scrimmage they had over the weekend, and it’s time to overanalyze it. We probably spent way too much time on the 3.5 minute video, but we’re happy to break down what we saw as we get more video on how this Duke team is coming together. Make sure you’re following us! #736 - First Round Recap
We heard it three times in the top ten of the NBA Draft... Adam Silver uttering the words "...from Duke University." Cooper Flagg, Kon Kneuppel, and Khaman Maluach live their dreams and heard their names called at the top of the 2025 NBA Draft. The Duke Basketball Roundup breaks down what the moment meant to each of these beloved Dukies and how they fit in their new NBA homes. Of note, each of them head to teams that are already loaded with members of the Brotherhood, which should make the transition just a little bit easier. After the break we dive into some other fun stuff including the outfits worn by the NBA draftees and word of a couple cool scheduling items for the 2025-26 Blue Devils that will provide interesting chances to see the team in Cameron. #735 - Cooper Flagg ready to go #1
For the final preview of the NBA Draft, the Duke Basketball Roundup and Jay Bilas dive into Cooper Flagg, widely heralded as perhaps the most complete college player to enter the draft in decades. We don't get into a discussion of whether he will go #1, that is a foregone conclusion, but we do dive into whether Dallas should even begin to consider trading the pick for an established NBA superstar. After the break, is he Kon 2.0? The podcast looks at Nik Khamenia's summer plans -- which include playing for a very impressive Team USA at the U19 World Cup and (perhaps) building buzz the way a certain overlooked Duke freshman did around this time a year ago. #734 - Bilas does the Kon
Part four of the Duke Basketball Roundup's NBA Draft series features Jay Bilas breaking down Kon Kneuppel's game. For a kid who many doubted would even be a starter a year ago, Kon blossomed into one of the best players in the land and a guy who could go top 5 in the lottery. Jason and Donald also dive into what they like about Kon's game and what NBA teams could be worried about in taking him with a high draft pick. After the break, the podcast guys also give us as much analysis as possible about the videos that came out of the first few days of Duke's summer workouts. What did we learn about Dame Sarr, Big Pat, Cam Booz, and others from these highly edited snippets of video? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 730#733 - More from Jay Bilas on Khaman Maluach in the NBA
We continue our NBA Draft previews on Episode 733 as Jay Bilas helps us analyze Khaman Maluach’s potential in the NBA! ManMan is a player that could go as high as 3rd in the draft or as low as the end of the lottery, but no one doubts his abilities on defense. Jay thinks the real upside comes on offense, where may think that if he can continue to add to his game, he will be a force for years to come. After Jay’s comments and predictions on Maluach, Donald and Jason give their takes as well. We saw what he did at Duke and how much he improved in just one year. The sky’s the limit for Khaman Maluach in the NBA. After the break, we get into some of the rules changes that are coming to college basketball, particularly the addition of the coach’s challenge. We discuss whether it’s good for the game and we get into some of the other rules changes we would bring to make the games more exciting and limit the delays. Donald and Jason hear once again from Jay Bilas, who gives his thoughts on Proctor’s game in the NBA and what kind of role he can create for himself. We discuss what he needs to improve and of course, Jay predicts where he will be taken in the NBA Draft. After the break, we react to Jay’s thoughts on Tyrese Proctor and his NBA prospects, giving our own draft predictions. It’s that time of year again! The NBA Draft is upon us and we welcome Jay Bilas back to the DBR Podcast to break down the 5 Duke Blue Devils who could hear their names called. On Episode 731, we begin our series by reviewing Sion James. Before we get to Sion’s chances, Jay first gives us his thoughts on the overall draft. It’s viewed as a deep draft, but Jay discusses some of the things to watch as the draft unfolds as well as how the current state of college basketball may have affected the draft eligible pool. We then get to Sion James and what he brings to the table. What do NBA teams like about him? Where can he improve at the next level? What kind of role can he play? Jay provides his analysis on all of that and predicts where in the draft Sion James could go. After Jay gives his thoughts, Donald and Jason recap it all and provide their own predictions on where in the draft Sion could hear his name called. #730 - Pay-For-Play is here
There's a whole bunch of stuff to talk about on the latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup. We begin with a wild 24 hours for Duke baseball... 24 hours that kinda suck but also kinda show how far the program has come. From there we pay tribute to Coach Will Stephens, the most important part of the men's basketball team that casual fans have never heard of. But our main topic comes after the break... NIL. The House Settlement has been approved by the courts and it ushers in a brave new world of schools directly paying players in all kinds of sports. The DBR podcast dives into what it means for Duke and we even have some of your thoughts on the topic from the comments submitted to the huge Duke survey that we are doing. Head to TinyURL.com/DukeRoundup for more on that! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #109 - Scheyer Said What?!
Jon Scheyer has been talking to the media this week, at least the podcast media. He has provided some truly revealing comments about what he looks for when putting a team together and the way he constructs his ideal roster. The Duke Basketball Roundup dives into what he had to say and what it all means. After the break, The DBR Podcast needs your help. We are conducting a survey. We want to know who your favorite Dukie is, which team you want Duke to play, which Duke team is your one true love, and how you feel about the current shape of college basketball including the transfer portal, NIL, and one-and-done. Head to tinyurl.com/dukeroundup and let us know what you think. We want to see what the collective Duke community thinks about our team and our sport. We will reveal the results on a later show once all of you have had plenty of time to fill ou the survey. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
