#697 - Massacre in MSG
Well, that was fun (provided you are not an Illinois fan). In honor of Duke putting an historic beatdown on the Illini, The Duke Basketball Roundup presents an extra long episode to recap all the great moments from this contest. From Sion's opening three to Spencer's awesome step-back, the DBR team has all you need to know about the game. And, though Jason and Donald were not in the house to experience it, Sam Klein was and the DBR Pod original makes a return appearance to give us all the flavor from inside the World's Most Famous Arena. And, before they go, the DBR team gives us their take on the rumors that Jai Lucas will be heading to Miami to be their next head coach. At least one member of the DBR crew has some sources who say, "slow down, this may not be a done deal quite yet." Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #93 - Garden Party with Illinois
It is a rarity in the sport these days, two major conference teams venturing outside of their league for a mid-Februrary matchup. But, that is exactly what Duke and Illinois will be doing this weekend and the DBR Podcast is very excited about it. This huge, huge game is a chance for Duke to show that it is more than a bully who just beats up on weak ACC teams. Illinois brings strong metrics and an impressive roster (headlined by a future high lottery pick) into this matchup. Jason and Donald give you a full preview of what to expect and who to be on the lookout for as the ACC battles the Big Ten in Madison Square Garden. Learn more about your ad choices. #696 - Danny Ferry joins the pod
For your mid-week enjoyment, DBR Podcast co-host Jason Evans sits down with a fellow member of the Duke class of 1989, Danny Ferry, one of the all-time great Duke hoops players. They start by chatting about the current Duke team, which Danny thinks could be historically good... like the best Duke team in at least 20 years. Their wide ranging conversation also gets into the ways the game of basketball has changed in recent years; reflections on the game where Danny set the Duke record by scoring 58 points in one contest; his decision not to play for the LA Clippers and to head to Italy instead; and how tight the Brotherhood is (especially among NBA front-office Dukies). Oh, and Jason also asks him for a Coach K story and Danny comes through with a salty tale about one of the major reasons he ended up picking Duke when he was being recruited. Ep 695#695 - Duke Beats The Wahoo Out Of Virginia
Duke did it again! They walked out of John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville with an 80-62 win over the Virginia Cavaliers, the largest victoy Duke has had in that gym. We recap it almost immediately after the game on Episode 695. UVA made Duke work for it, but Duke was able to overcome it with rebounding and tough defense. They also were making shots and it was thrill to watch so many guys contribute in different ways. Cooper Flagg was Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel really did well in the paint, and Isaiah Evans was Showtime Slim. Each of them had 17 points each to pace Duke, and we talk about their contributions and so much more! The unfortunate part of the game was Maliq Brown likely dislocating his shoulder while deflecting a pass in the 1st half. His status is once again in question, but we’re more confident about how Duke will respond given the growth of this team. We end with our Plays of the Game and a look at Duke Women’s Basketball getting a 3 seed in the Women’s Basketball Top 16 reveal. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #92 - Virginia Awaits
It is a quick turnaround for the Duke Blue Devils as they travel to Virginia for a Monday night contest with Virginia. The DBR Podcast guys have a warning... The Cavs may present more of a challenge than you think. Virginia has had a bad season, for sure, but they've been a good bit better lately and -- believe it or not -- appear to be clicking pretty nicely on offense. That's not something you see very often from Virginia. Will Duke keep its focus on the heels of a pair of blowout wins last week? After the break Jason and Donald dive into the NCAA's early bracket reveal. A lot can change, but this tells us what the selection committee thinks about Duke and the other top teams right now. Ep 689#694 - Duke Hits 100 In Stanford Stomping
It’s another fun one! Jason and Donald are back with Episode 694 to recap Duke’s stomping of the Stanford Cardinal. Duke was able to frustrate Stanford with their defense, and it was a sight to see. After general thoughts and headlines, we discuss how the defense allowed Duke to feel comfortable all afternoon. The offense was on point as well, and Duke shot really well. We hit our stride and there were several notable performances to highlight. We get into some nitpicky things that we can improve, but when you score 106 points in a 36-point win, it makes for a fun and entertaining recap! We end with our play of the game and a split Player of the Week. We will be back in your feeds very soon to preview the Virginia game. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #91 - Preparing for Jaylen Blakes' Homecoming
The Duke Blue Devils return to the court on Saturday afternoon when they welcome the Stanford Cardinal to town. We preview the game on DBR Bites #91. Stanford comes in as a decent team, and Jason and Donald are ready for the Cardinal's first visit as ACC members. However, the biggest story is the return of Jaylen Blakes, forever beloved by the Blue Devil faithful. He also returns as arguably the most improved player in the nation. He also has a teammate in Maxime Raynaud who is probably the 2nd best player in the ACC. We go through the rest of the Cardinal players in a departure from our normal order. We also get into the analytics for Stanford. This team has a couple of things they're pretty good at, but there are also some weaknesses. We end with the things that you should watch for as the Blue Devils look to get another win in conference play. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 693#693 - Cal Clobbered
Duke had no trouble beating the Cal Bears in Cameron on Wednesday night and it is a real testament to the quality of these Blue Devils that the Duke Basketball Roundup crew didn't start out their recap podcast by raving about how great the game way. A 21 point beatdown just isn't that surprising from this crew of Blue Devils. Still, Jason and Donald found plenty to talk about on their latest episode including the stellar play of the team D and the offensive explosion we are seeing from Tyrese Proctor. After the break, the guys also get into some pretty bad errors made by the ACC Network announcing crews last night. Whew, these are simple facts but the TV commentators just messed them up wildly. DBR Bites #90 - Maiden showdown with the Golden Bears
The Duke Blue Devils are back at it Wednesday night when they welcome the Cal Bears to town. We preview the game on DBR Bites #90. Duke looks to get back on track after Saturday's loss to Clemson, but they're battling the sick bug amongst the team. Before we get into the Cal preview, we hear from Jon Scheyer on how sick Cooper Flagg is and how it's affected his play. We also hear from Cal coach Mark Madsen on what he feels his team needs to do to beat the Blue Devils. We then get into the breakdown of Cal's season thus far. Their first season in the ACC hasn't been great, but they have some good players on the team (including the son of a former NBA star) and we give you our take on how Duke can get back in the win column. Ep 692#692 - Streak Broken, Clemson Slips Past Duke
The dream of an undefeated ACC regular season is gone, but the lessons learned from Clemson's stunning 77-71 victory over Duke could be the things that propel this team even bigger accomplishments. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a complete recap of what happened in this contest, from the pregame warmups to the postgame court storming and everything in between. Jason was in attendance, seated right next to the Duke bench, for an unrivaled vantage point on how it all unfolded and Donald chimes in with the observations and angles the folks do not get to see in person. And be sure to stick around for the end of this episode for an uplifting story about the Duke community and how all of us are connected. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #89 - Big Game At Littlejohn
The Duke Blue Devils have a huge test on Saturday night against the Clemson Tigers. We preview the Quad 1 game on DBR Bites #89. Duke enters the contest in 1st place and undefeated in the ACC, but Littlejohn is traditionally a tough place for Duke to play against the Tigers, who are tied for 2nd in the conference. Donald and Jason bring you up to speed on what has made Clemson successful thus far, from what they do well on offense and defense to some of their special players. Duke can beat Clemson, and we also tell you how that can happen. We also discuss the volatile NBA trade deadline that passed on Thursday. Several members of The Brotherhood are off to new homes, and we briefly discuss where everyone ended up. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 691#691 - Orange Crush
Ho hum, another relaxing Duke victory where the outcome was never in doubt. The Duke Basketball Roundup crew has a breakdown of one of the more complete efforts we've seen all year from Duke, an 83-54 dismantling of Syracuse. From the stellar defense to the crisp ball movement on offense, Duke was in control throughout this one. Special shout-out to Maliq Brown, returning to his old stomping grounds and showing off the defensive prowess that has made him one of the elite disruptors in the country. Oh and we really need to know if a blocked shot can also be an assist, because Khaman Maluach had a connection to Isaiah Evans that sure looked like it was part-block, part-pass. DBR Bites #88 - What to expect from the Orange
Admit it, you are thinking ahead. You are dreaming about going 20-0 in the ACC or maybe you are already looking into the big matchup with ACC #2 Clemson this weekend. Well, the Duke Basketball Roundup was unafraid to ask Jon Scheyer about those very things... and he put us in our place very quickly. It is all part of the latest edition of the DBR Pod in which we spend most of our time examining the next opponent for Duke, the Syracuse Orange. What kind of team are they without the vaunted Boeheim zone defense? Plus, Jason and Donald take a moment to speak about the great Leonard Hamilton, who announced this week that he will step down from FSU after an incredible coaching career. What will the podcast co-hosts remember the most about the man? It may just be the overwhelming size of his rosters. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 690#690 - Nothing Could Be Finer Than A Relaxing Win Over Carolina!
This was a fun one to record. The Duke Blue Devils destroyed the North Carolina Tar Heels last night, and we do a thorough recap of everything on Episode 690! Last night’s DBR Bites was a quick recap on vibes, so in this one deals with the substance of how Duke did so well against UNC. It started with the defense, but Duke excelled on all sides of the basketball. Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel were dominant, but Duke was able to pour on the pressure and everyone on the team provided something for that. We of course get into everything good about the game, but we also discuss the things to improve. It wasn’t all perfect, but the end result absolutely was. We’re on a high and we should be...stay for our Play of the Game and our Player of the Week awards, but stay after the Duke Band for some postgame content about arguably the biggest NBA trade of all time! DBR Bites #87 - It was a BEATDOWN!!
The Duke Basketball Roundup guys will have a stat-filled, analysis-laden recap of the whupping that Duke put on Carolina in the coming hours, but Jason and Donald just wanted to hop on quickly for an insta-reaction to Duke absolutely torching the hated Tar Heels in Cameron. The final score doesn't even come close to showing what a massive beatdown this contest was. Hang on... I just called it a contest. It wasn't. Carolina was non-competitive and could do nothing against Duke when it mattered (the final few minute flurry is meaningless and we all know it). Sit back and enjoy this quick DBR Bites as the guys prepare for a longer and more indulgent recap tomorrow. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 689#689 - How To Beat Carolina
It’s time. The big game is upon us and we preview Duke’s matchup with North Carolina on Episode 689! UNC has struggled this season against a loaded schedule, one of the best of the country. Donald and Jason get into who UNC has played and how they’ve struggled in very close games. They then break down the offense and defense, going deep to tell you about what makes UNC successful and where Duke could have an advantage. They have some players that are dangerous, but they’ve struggled this year with the combinations on the court and that has created inconsistency. We then get into the things to watch, including who matches up with Cooper Flagg, rebounding, and embracing the huge moment that this rivalry provides. After the break, Duke Football got their 2025 schedule, and it’s an interesting one! We discuss the schedule quickly to tell you which games to circle and how Duke could be set up for a decent run if they can make it through a couple of barriers. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 688#688 - The Duke-Carolina game -- the expert opinion
It is Carolina week and the Duke Basketball Roundup is going to have multiple previews of the big game against UNC. Up first, the guys welcome in Brendan Marks of The Athletic. It is his job to watch Duke and UNC all year long and he has plenty of thoughts about the troublesome year so far in Chapel Hill. Brendan looks into the failed roster construction that has made it really hard for UNC to win games unless they really turn up the tempo. And he also has thoughts about Duke... How impressed is he with Cooper Flagg and who does he think is Duke's secret go-to weapon in big games? Lastly, Jason and Donald ask him about the ACC and you may be surprised at which teams he thinks have a chance to make the NCAA tourney and which ones just don't have the horses to get there. Ep 687#687 - Pack sent Packing in wild contest
If you already digested the instant reaction pod released Monday night by the Duke Basketball Roundup team, then this is your next stop as the guys break down an unexpectedly tough battle with the NC State Wolfpack. Jason and Donald's deep dive include everything from Cooper Flafgg's second half dominance to the ways Duke's zone held State in check to why Duke didn't shoot many threes and even what is going on with the suddenly shortened Duke bench. If you are not already a subscriber to the DBR podcast, now is the time to sign up on whatever podcast platform you use because you won't want to miss a single second of what the guys have in store for you this week. With State in the rear view mirror it is Carolina week and there will be plenty of episodes giving you all you need to be 100% ready for the big matchup with our biggest rival. DBR Bites #86 - Wrapping our heads around the weird from the Wolfpack win
EWhat was that game?! Donald and Jason hop on almost immediately after Duke beat NC State to discuss all the ancillary weirdness that attached itself to this game. From the weird (Khaman Maluach losing his lunch) to the wild (Tyrese Proctor being saved from falling out of bounds by Kon Knueppel holding his leg down) to the downright scary (a fan passing out in the stands), we decided to jump on for a few minutes to talk about those things. The actual basketball game action will be recapped on Tuesday, so submit your headlines to our email (DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com). But this is 15 minutes of recapping the weird non-basketball moments of this game. Somehow, Duke is still unbeaten in the ACC, but we’re left not knowing how quite to fully process this win. DBR Bites #85 - Wolfpack come calling
Fresh off the Blue Devil's win on the road at Wake, the team is back in Cameron for another in-state rival, the NC State Wolfpack. We all remember what State did to Duke in March last season, but this is a very different club with several new faces and almost everyone in new roles. The Duke Basketball Roundup crew is here with a look at how State's season has gone so far including a deep dive into what is working for them on offense (holding onto the ball and not committing turnovers) and defense (forcing teams to make decisions late in the shot clock). Duke figures to be a big favorite in this contest, but as Wake Forest showed all of us, rivalry games have a way of fooling all the expert predictions. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 686#686 - Gillis and Ngongba Help Duke Beat Wake
EThe Duke Blue Devils toughed out a 63-56 win over Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon, and we recap the win on Episode 686. Donald and Jason begin with the headlines after a tough win and start by commending Duke for their resilience in coming back after Wake stormed to take the lead. They center a lot of the kudos around two bench players: Mason Gillis and Patrick Ngongba. Both players had tremendous efforts and were two of the main reasons why Duke remains undefeated in the ACC. We focus on the rest of the good, from rebounding to Cooper Flagg down the stretch. After the break, we get into the things that need to improve from this game, starting with turnovers and eliminating the overall sloppiness. That led to some of Wake’s ability to bounce back and take a lead midway through the second half. There was also physical play and we discuss all of the nuances behind how Wake was able to use physicality to their advantage. We close out with our play of the game as well as our Player of the Week. Also, look alive! We will be back in your feed very soon to preview the NC State game, which is on Monday night. Ep 685#685 - The Guy Who Asks the Tough Questions
If you have ever listened to one of Jon Scheyer's press conferences you know there is a voice that always asks the first question. That voice belongs to Raleigh News and Observer sportswriter Steve Wiseman, who has covered Duke athletics for close to 15 years. Steve sat down with Jason and Donald on the DBR Podcast this week to give us an assessment of the team and the ACC thus far. Among the questions he answers -- How does Cooper Flagg compare to other great Duke freshmen? When does Maliq Brown come back and how vulnerable is Duke with him out? What are Duke's chance of running the table in the ACC? And which ACC coaches are on the hot seat due to disappointing seasons? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #84 - How To Walk Out of Winston-Salem With A Win Against Wake
The Duke Blue Devils have a big game this Saturday when they take the road to face the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. We preview the game on DBR Bites Episode 84. Wake Forest is one of the top teams in the ACC right now and coming off a home win against UNC. They’ve defended their home court, going 10-0 so far this season. They put that record up against a Duke team that’s currently undefeated in conference play. Donald and Jason discuss the upcoming game, going through what Wake does well and where Duke could have an advantage. They take you through the Wake Forest roster and discuss what some of the key things to watch will be. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #83 - The Scorer Speaks
Did you ever wonder how the official scorer only had your favorite Duke player for 1 steal when you swear he stole the ball 3 times? What about blocked shots? Khaman had to have 4 last game but the official boxscore only shows him with 2. Well, all your scoring questions are answered on the latest edition of the DBR Podcast because the pod welcomes Joe Jasper as a guest. Joe has been the official scorer for Duke basketball for more than 2 decades. This interview gets into all the little details about how the scoring process works and how it has changed over the years. Joe also gives us his take on this year's Duke team -- after all, he has watched hundreds of Duke games up close over the years. Does he think something special is brewing in Cameron this year? #684 - BC Beatdown (with Sam Klein)
The Devils may have started out slow, but they ended up dispatching a badly outmatched BC team with ease to win their 5th road game on the season against zero road losses. The Duke Basketball Roundup was in Boston (in the person of longtime collaborator Sam Klein) to witness the closest thing to a homecoming that Cooper Flagg is gonna get this season. Is it somehow possible that the Blue Devils played a bad game and still won by 25 points? Oh, and the episode includes a couple shoutouts to beloved former Dukie Jaylen Blakes, who stuck a dagger in UNC's heart and twisted it with his buzzer beater. The Crazies better give him plenty of love when he returns to Cameron in a few weeks. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 82DBR Bites #82 - BC preview and COY outrage
Duke takes every opponent seriously and so the Duke Basketball Roundup Podcast does too. Still, it is hard to find much that is very good to say about Boston College, the worst team in the ACC according to KenPom. In the DBR Pod preview, Jason and Donald look at how the BC program has fallen on hard times and what the current players are doing well (and poorly) as they try to get the program back to what it once was. Ep 683#683 - Duke Reaches Category 3 in Beatdown of Canes
The Duke Blue Devils absolutely took the wind out of the Miami Hurricanes in a 89-54 beatdown on Tuesday night. Scott Rich joins us to discuss it all on Episode 683! It’s Jason’s birthday (happy birthday Jason!) so he’s only on for a few minutes at the beginning to discuss Caleb Foster’s really good game as well as how bad the Miami defense was in letting Duke get any shot it wanted. After he departs, Donald and Scott go through the rest of the good, from Kon Knueppel’s career day in points to Khaman Maluach’s 15 rebounds to the great games from Mason Gillis, Patrick Ngongba, and the rest of the bench. The defense was there, the shooting was there, and Bill Courtney and the Canes just didn’t have the pace to keep up with the Blue Devils. After the break, it was as close to a full 40 minute performance as we’ve seen from Duke, but there were still some details to clean up from this game. Scott and Donald get into it and then they go to Play of the Game, where they both take different perspectives of the same thunderous alley oop from Maluach. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 682#682 - Building a team and making sense of Miami's season
A flurry of Duke news to cover in this episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup. First on our list is the status of Maliq Brown and how Duke will deal with not having our defensive savant available for a few weeks (we hope not longer than that). Next, Jason and Donald talk about the genius that is Cooper Flagg on offense and how Jon Scheyer constructed what is almost a perfect roster to fit around him. After that, the guys dive into Duke's next opponent, the Miami Hurricanes. Donald is a longtime follower of that team and he breaks down how their season has turned into such a nightmare. Lastly, the podcast crew dives into an idea Coach K is pushing... some kind of partnership between the ACC and the Big East. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 681#681 - The Answer To Life, The Universe, and Everything: Cooper Flagg
The Duke Blue Devils won their game against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish yesterday in a game that got close at the end. However, Cooper Flagg’s record 42 points was the difference, and we recap it all on Episode 681. Cooper Flagg’s 42 points was an ACC freshman record, the most points for Duke in over 35 years, and was incredible to watch. But, Notre Dame made it a test at the end, and Jason and Donald begin by discussing that test that the Blue Devils received. They then get into the headlines and all the good from the game, including Khaman Maluach’s career day. Cooper Flagg’s stat line is nothing short of mesmerizing, and there were other things that Duke did successfully on the afternoon. After the break, we focus on what was not successful for Duke, from our defense late in the game to the bench production. Maliq Brown leaving the game after a minute due to injury is very concerning, and we hope that it’s not too serious. But, Duke got a bit of a pop quiz from the Fighting Irish, and while it wasn’t perfect, they were able to pass it and remain undefeated in the ACC. We of course end with our Play of the Game and our Player of the Week, which should come as no surprise. Make sure you’re following us! Ep 680#680 - College hoops journalist Jordan Brenner joins us again
What the DBR Podcast promises, it delivers. A month ago Jason and Donald were joined by journalist Jordan Brenner of The Athletic and DraftKings in a deep dive conversation about the Duke team that was filled with expert insight. And they promised they would bring Jordan back every month to assess what he sees from the team. So, with the calendar going from December to Janaury, it is time to have Jodan back on the Duke Basketball Roundup. Needless to say, he is even more impressed with the way the team is playing now than he was a few weeks ago. The wide-ranging conversation goes from Duke's use of depth to the roles of deep bench guys to expectations for how the season will go during March Madness. This is an episode not to miss with someone who knows the Duke program inside and out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
DBR Bites #81 - The Irish Come To Town
The Duke Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday afternoon against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. We preview that game on DBR Bites Episode 81! Duke is 5-0 in the ACC and they have been rolling lately, and the Fighting Irish enters with a 7-7 record and reeling. But, they recently had Markus Burton return to the lineup and he is the heart and soul of the team. Together with Tae Harris and Braeden Shrewsberry, they post the biggest issues for Duke’s defense. Jason and Donald go through what Notre Dame does successfully and where Duke can take advantage. We’re hoping the defensive pressure continues against Notre Dame to keep them frustrated. Ep 679#679 - Cooper Flagg Takes Flight Against Pitt
The Duke Blue Devils won in fun fashion against the Pitt Panthers, and we recap everything on Episode 679! There’s no way we can get into the recap without starting with the Dunk of the Season so far, when Cooper Flagg absolutely caught a body (and the foul) against Pitt center Guillermo Diaz Graham. We get into the rest of the good from the game, most notably the defense. The defense is performing at historic levels, and it’s incredible to watch. It’s fueled how Duke takes these games over and shuts an opponent down. We also deal with the stuff to improve from this game, from the turnovers to Jason and Donald’s ability to make an opponent sound dangerous! There was a lot to discuss from this one, so it’s a longer episode. But, it’s one you’ll want to listen to from start to finish! Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #80 - Poised Duke Preps For Pitt Panthers
The Duke Blue Devils return home tomorrow to take on the Pitt Panthers, and we preview the Quad 1 game on DBR Bites Episode 80. Duke and Pitt both enter with 12-2 records overall and undefeated in the ACC, and this is a strong Pitt team led by a beloved member of The Brotherhood in Jeff Capel. Capel has a team that has quite a bit of continuity, which makes their elevation to one of the best teams in the ACC. They have some length and some toughness, and they have some guys who can put the biscuit in the basket. Donald and Jason go through what Pitt brings to Cameron and how Duke can continue their unbeaten start to the ACC schedule. Before the break, we also do a little word on The Duke Effect and how many people tuned into Duke Basketball in 2024. After the break, we switch to football, where Duke lost to Ole Miss last week in the Gator Bowl. Despite the 52-20 scoreline, there was some things to be proud of from Duke on both sides of the ball. We discuss how Henry Belin IV did throwing the football and how Duke is set up to be a contender for the ACC title next year with their schedule and many of the players coming back, including All-American Chandler Rivers. #678 - Duke Rides the Mustangs
A game at upstart SMU was supposed to be one of the biggest challenges left on Duke's schedule and most folks expected a close contest that would likely no be decided until the final minutes. It didn't take long for Duke to dispel that notion. The DBR Podcast crew cannot gush enough about this game where Duke jumped all over SMU and never let up for a second. Tyrese Proctor, Manman, Caleb Foster, and several guys get shout-outs but it is the performance of Cooper Flagg that really stands out as he impacts every aspect of the contest on both ends of the floor. A word of warning -- be careful as you listen or you might get caught up in a wee bit of irrational exuberance... the guys even calculate Duke's chances of winning out the rest of the regular season. DBR Bites #79 - Big Game at SMU
Having, hopefully, knocked the holiday rust off against Virginia Tech, the Blue Devils hit the road to Dallas for a big matchup with the SMU Mustangs. SMU may be new to the ACC, but they are looking to make a real splash in hoops the same way they did in football. And step one in that process would be a victory over Duke. The DBR Podcast gets things started by talking about how important this game will be for Duke's quest for a top tournament seed. This is a Quad 1 game and there just aren't many of those left on Duke's schedule, so the Devils need to take advantage of a chance to impress with a road win. Jason and Donald talk about what SMU does well (elite offense) and the matchups Duke will need to take advantage of to get a victory (wait until you hear about SMU's freshman big man). Ep 677#677 - Duke ends 2024 by ending Virginia Tech
Welcome to 2025! The Duke Blue Devils closed out 2024 yesterday with a win over Virginia Tech, so we ring in the new year with Episode 677! Donald and Jason break down the win over the Hokies by first talking about the vibes inside the building. Donald was in the building and ran into some listeners in what was a great time for all. We get into the good that happened, led by Cooper Flagg’s 24 points and Tyrese Proctor playing the game with some spunk. There was a lot to discuss, including Duke going 100% from the free throw line! After the break, we get into some of the things that can be improved upon and there’s a major theme: rust was butter flavored yesterday. We then discuss our play of the game, which was a fun one. DBR Bites #78 - Preparing to Ball Drop Virginia Tech and Bowl with Rebels
Duke Basketball ends 2024 with a game against the Virginia Tech Hokies and Duke Football begins 2025 with the Gator Bowl against the Ole Miss Rebels. We preview both games on DBR Bites Episode 78. Duke Basketball has a New Year’s Eve matchup with the Hokies, with Jaden Schutt returning to Cameron for the first time since he transferred to Blacksburg. He’s coming back as the Schutter we knew he could be and he’s likely coming with some extra motivation. Virginia Tech hasn’t played well this season, but they still have some guys to watch as Donald and Jason give you an in depth look at what they do on both sides of the ball. After the break, we switch to football as Duke has a huge test against Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl on Thursday. Ole Miss is scary good, with most of their stars expected to play in the bowl game. We take you through what they do best and set the scene for what is a big test for the Duke program. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #77 - Duke's NIL budget and farewell to a Miami legend
The DBR Podcast welcomes you back from the (brief) Christmas break with a flurry of some news stories. First up is the report that Duke is paying its new QB $4 million per season for the next two years. That's a big number that some say is the biggest contract in college football NIL history (for the moment). Jason and Donald break down what all this portal madness means for the football team. After the break, the guys have plenty to say about Jim Larranaga's decision to step down at Miami and what it says about the state of college sports. Oh, and this latest edition of the pod also includes a few words about how bad the back half of the ACC is this season and how it leaves Duke with almost no margin for error when it comes to showing up EVERY SINGLE GAME in ACC play. Ep 676#676 - Catching Up With Ryan Young!
While the Duke Blue Devils get an earned holiday break, the DBR Podcast crew is still hard at work. On Episode 676, we welcome back Ryan Young to the show for an awesome discussion! Ryan Young has graduated from Fuqua and is in the real world, and we figured it was a great time to catch up with the beloved former center to see what he’s been up to since he got his Fuqua degree. He’s been able to watch several games in person this season as a fan, so we naturally get his thoughts on the current team, how they’ve been doing, and how he would have fit in the squad had he possessed one final year of eligibility. We also get into the current state of college basketball, from the transfer portal to growing NIL numbers and how teams are affected. Of course, Ryan has a unique perspective as someone whose career started at Northwestern Wildcats as a freshman with no NIL and no transfer portal and ended with a Duke career with an extra year due to Covid and in a world where the transfer portal and NIL exists. He’s very candid with his thoughts on how the game has changed from the player’s perspective as well as the coach’s perspective, and it’s great to that he took the time to provide us with that insight. Ep 675#675 - Duke Wrecks Tech
The Devils went down to Georgia, they were looking for a game to steal. Tech was in a bind, they were way behind, and then K2 started to deal. Ok, sorry for the stolen lyrics. The latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup features a complete report on the game in Atlanta where Duke ran away from the Yellow Jackets behind the lethal combo of Kon and Khaman. The pick-n-roll mastery of those two players powered Duke to a 17-2 run early in the second half that gave Duke a comfortable ACC road win. In addition to the PnR mastery, the game featured perhaps the best shooting game of the season for Duke and yet another session of masterful in-your-face defense. As a special treat, you get to listen in as DBR Podcast co-host Jason Evans attended the post-game news conference and got to ask Coach Scheyer and K2 a couple questions about the impressive display Duke put on as they head into the Christmas break. DBR Bites #76 - Will Bill Belichick's arrival kill UNC Basketball?
Bill Belichick’s arrival at UNC Football has brought a renewed investment in the program. But will it come at a price for UNC Basketball? Sam Klein is back to help Jason and Donald break it down on DBR Bites Episode 76. With Belichick comes the guaranteed increased in football investments, from assistant salaries to NIL dollars. Some in UNC circles feel that boosters may sacrifice basketball for a few years for the purpose of getting UNC into either the SEC or the Big Ten. Donald, Jason, and Sam debate whether the end of UNC Basketball’s relevance is a real possibility. There’s lots to consider here: whether UNC Basketball can continue to pull in top talent, whether big boosters out there are willing to continue investing in basketball, the potential for private equity to enter the fray, and whether the SEC or Big Ten would even want them in the next decade. It’s not an easy answer and it makes for a good discussion. After the break, we take a look at CNBC’s list of perceived college athletics valuations. While the Big Ten and SEC dominate the list, Duke is in a pretty good position. Duke Basketball helps, but it’s the overall performance of the athletics department combined with other factors that has Duke in position to be okay, no matter how conference realignment continues to map its course. DBR Bites #75 - Devils Head Down To Georgia (Tech)
The Duke Blue Devils head to Atlanta this weekend to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and we preview it on DBR Bites Episode 75. The Yellow Jackets stung the Devils last year in Atlanta, but once again have had a really bad start to the season. Still, they have some players who are dangerous and this is a game they’ve no doubt circled as a big time win opportunity. Donald and Jason discuss their record to date and then get into the analytics and players. After the break, Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia got a favorable court ruling that allows him to continue to play college football next season despite playing some junior college ball. The ruling could pave the way for JUCO athletes to get a full 4 years of eligibility to pursue NIL opportunities. But some may not think it’s a great idea, and we quickly discuss the pros and cons. Ep 674#674 - Duke Makes Brick Wall From George’s Masonry
The Duke Blue Devils once again struggled shooting, but their defense made the George Mason Patriots put up bricks all night in a 68-47 victory. We recap the victory on Episode 674. Duke actually had a good start this time, but they still saw a first half where they had a large stretch with bad shooting. After reviewing the headlines, Donald and Jason review the good from the game, which was highlighted by the stellar defense. Cooper Flagg led all scorers with 24 points and another near 10-5-5 game, and there were some standout moments from other players as well. Isaiah Evans once again proved to be a microwave off the bench. After the break, we get to the bad, led by the first half shooting woes. There were also some details that need to be worked out and we discuss how to get a couple of key contributors their confidence back. We end with our Play of the Game as Duke moves to 9-2 on the season. Make sure you’re following us! DBR Bites #74 - George Mason is good
As they always do, the DBR Podcast brings you a preview of Duke's next opponent. This time it is the George Mason Patriots. But, unlike other smaller conference teams, Duke has bitten off a serious challenge this time around. George Mason is good -- they'd probably be a middle of the pack ACC team if they were in the conference-- and they have a bunch of guys who used to play in power conferences who are just itching to put a major notch in their belt. This is a preview worth listening to as Duke could be in for a real challenge in this contest. After the break, the podcast gets into the major recruiting news out of... UTAH? AJ Dybantsa, the top player in high school and one of the most effective scorers ever at the high school level, has picked BYU for his one year college career. On the one hand it is a surprising choice, but on the other hand $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Dybantsa is set to be the highest paid college basketball player of all time. The DBR Pod breaks down what this will mean for next season and for the future of NIL-driven recruiting. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 673#673 - Is Duke a good shooting team?
Simple questions often prove to be the most difficult to answer. The Duke Basketball Roundup got a simple question from a listener a few days ago -- is this Duke team a poor shooting team from the perimeter. The answer is... complicated. Both Jason and Donald provide evidence that it is probably a better set of shooters than you think, but expecting them to hit 40+ percent from long range may be a pipe dream. The latest episode of the DBR Podcast has other business to get to as well, and this episode begins with a discussion of football and the transfer portal. Duke has landed an elite QB in Darien Mensah and the podcast dudes have a breakdown of what his commitment means for Manny Diaz's second season in Durham. Jason and Donald also dive into the stunning football news from down the road in Chapel Hill -- will Bill Belichick be able to wake the "sleeping giant" that is UNC football? Ep 672#672 - ManMan Breaks Incarnate's Word
The Duke Blue Devils didn’t look great in a win against Incarnate Word, but a win’s a win. Donald and Jason jump on quickly after the game to recap it on Episode 672. Duke was led by a career night from Khaman Maluach, who was the star of the first half. Isaiah Evans was the pace car in the second half. But while ManMan had a great night and Evans had a great half, Duke struggled on offense. After the headlines, Donald and Jason get to the good and bad from this game. It was a game where Duke really struggled to put Incarnate Word away in the first half and let them hang before the defense took over in the second half to make it a bigger win. Still, they needed to play through yet another slow start and needed to have more intensity and mental sharpness throughout the game. After the break, we discuss Maalik Murphy’s decision to enter the transfer portal. He will not play for Duke in the bowl game against Ole Miss, and we discuss his season at Duke. We wish him the best as he moves on and we talk about the state of the portal in college football. Despite many fans being angry at him leaving and the transfer portal at large, Duke has so far had it pretty easy despite the high profile departure. And, help could be on the way. DBR Bites #73 - What do you need to know about Incarnate Word?
Only about 48 hours after dispatching the Louisville Cardinals, the Incarnate Word Cardinals come to Cameron. The Duke Basketball Roundup brings you all you need to know about this game, from the list of teams that Incarnate Word has played to their lineup of deadeye sharpshooters from the perimeter. Jason and Donald dive into the advanced metrics in an effort to explain how this team could be so good at shooting 3s and so bad at defending them. After the break, the guys turn to the football -- both the College Football Playoff and the way the dominoes fell to end up with Duke playing an SEC power in Ole Miss in the Gator Bowl. This is a big chance for Duke to show it belongs alongside a team that was in line for a playoff bid pretty much all season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Ep 671#671 - Not in the Cards, Duke's Comeback Against Louisville
Duke got off to another slow start, but righted the ship and took care of business against Louisville to notch an important road win in their ACC opener. On the latest episode of the Duke Basketball Roundup, Jason and Donald chat about the phenomenal play of the "old dudes" Tyrese Proctor, Sion James, and especially Maliq Brown. They took over when the game was on the line after Cooper Flagg picked up his 4th foul with about 11 minutes left. Those guys -- with help from Kon Ktripple and Mason Gillis, turned a 5 point deficit into an 8 point lead, allowing Duke to cruise home with a win. The podcast gang may be frustrated by yet another game where the Devils got off to a terribly cold start, but have no complaints about the second half and the adjustments Duke made in the contest. After the break, the guys chat a bit about the opening of ACC play for the rest of the league. A few teams pulled off all-important road wins as the ACC already seems to be separating into tiers. DBR Bites #72 - Cardinal Preview
While Duke fans may be basking in the afterglow of that impressive win over Auburn, ACC season is ready to start. Duke takes on the Louisville Cardinals on Sunday and the Duke Basketball Roundup is here with a rundown of what to expect from that contest. The Cards have a 100% new roster, no one is back from the past two years where Louisville occupied the ACC cellar. And the new players and new coach Pat Kelsey are doing much better than the past couple years. But, Louisville still seems to be a solid step behind the top of the ACC. What's more, they have been really hit by injuries the past few weeks and will be quite short-handed against Duke. Have a listen as Jason and Donald take a deep dive into Duke's first ACC game. Ep 670#670 - Isaiah Evans Flamethrower Bests Auburn
It will forever be known as the Isaiah Evans game. With the Auburn Tigers laying a hurting on Duke early in Cameron, a little used freshman suddenly became the best player on the floor. The Duke Basketball Roundup has a full breakdown of the matchup between the best offense and the best defense in the land as Duke beats Auburn 84 - 78. And though the first half belonged to Evans, the second half was the Cooper Flagg show as Duke held the Tigers at arm's length throughout. Jason and Donald have plenty to say about this impressive win, including praise for Maliq Brown and Sion James on D and a special play of the game nod to Tyrese Proctor for an amazing buzzer beater. This is the kind of win that will look very, very good when the NCAA selection committee is doing their thing in March. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
