#341 - Paolo Banchero in 2K22, Duke Draft reactions
The DBR Podcast is here to break down some interesting things in the world of basketball on Episode 341! First off, Paolo Banchero has inked a deal to become the first college player to feature in NBA 2K22, and we discuss how cool of a NIL deal it is for him to be a part of that game. We also break down the Forum vote on the Duke draft that we conducted on the last episode. Which of Sam, Donald, and Jason had the team that most fans resonated with? It’s close between two people! After the break, we dive into Duke Football’s victory over NC A&T. Who had the good game, and where did Duke have the edge? We also preview their upcoming game against Northwestern. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, rate, and review the podcast. It really helps and we appreciate it! If you have topic suggestions, DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com is the place to go to let us know! #340 - Drafting the best Dukies of all-time
The DBR Podcast crew is doing a draft. Donald, Jason, and Sam are picking the best Blue Devils of all time to form an 8-man team. Of course guys like Zion Williamson, Shane Battier, JJ Redick, Grant Hill, and Christian Laettner all get picked. But what happens when we each get to the 7th and 8th men on our teams? That's when things get a little bit crazy. And, as a special bonus, this is the podcast where all of you get to participate and help us pick a winner. Go to the DBR Forums and vote on which of our teams is the best. Here is the URL so you can pick Jason's Team, or Sam's Team, or Donald's Team: https://forums.dukebasketballreport.com/forums/showthread.php?46836-Vote-for-the-best-team-of-Dukies-of-all-time!&p=1399194#post1399194 Learn more about your ad choices. #339 - More Schutt Stuff and Football Falls
The recruiting success of Jon Scheyer still has everyone buzzing after last week's news that sharpshooter Jaden Schutt will be a Blue Devil. The DBR podcast crew has more on the impact the 3-point bombing Schutt will have on next year's roster. Then, after a quick break, the guys take on the difficult task of breaking down what happened to the Duke Football team over the weekend. There were certainly some bright spots in the upset loss to Charlotte, but there were also some major sources of concern. And, in the course of our discussion, Jason reveals that he actually made a wager on the Duke football team that leaves Sam and Donald speechless. The podcast crew wraps things up by talking a bit about other ACC football results, including the ACC's two top-ten ranked teams both losing. Learn more about your ad choices. #338 - Emergency Pod: Jaden Schutt Picks Duke!
Welcome to Duke, Jaden Schutt! Duke head-coach-to-be Jon Scheyer has struck again on the recruiting trail. This time he brings in a player who some have called the best shooter in the entire high school class of 2022. Jaden Schutt is an Illinois kid and it is impossible not to see some real similarities to fellow Illinois native Jon Scheyer. The DBR Podcast is going to have a full report on Schutt over the weekend, but podcast host Jason Evans wanted to get something out quick to whet your appetite. Learn more about your ad choices. #337 - Jim Sumner previews Duke Football
Normally it's the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, but for this week, we're the Duke Football Report Podcast, as the Blue Devils kick off the 2021 season against the Charlotte 49ers in just a few days, and we have questions. DBR's own Jim Sumner is here to answer all of our questions about the team and its upcoming season. Graduate student Gunnar Holmberg is stepping into the starting quarterback role as Coach David Cutcliffe looks to replace key pieces all over the field. We ask Jim how ready Holmberg is to take over the position, particularly given the difficulty the team had last year with graduate transfer Chase Brice under center. The high point of Duke's offensive attack is on the ground, where returning running back Mataeo Durant is returning after one of the best seasons in Duke history. The rest of the offensive skill players are less experienced and accomplished, but we hope that Holmberg and the rest of the group can develop quickly. On the defensive side of the ball, Duke is looking at a lot of new players in key roles, as they've lost a few talented players to the NFL draft. Who can replace the production of Chris Rumph II, Michael Carter II, and Victor Dimukeje? Finally, we look at the coaching staff, including Coach Cutcliffe's future at Duke, and the status of the various coordinators. Duke didn't make many changes on the staff this offseason, but that doesn't mean the team can't make big changes on the field to right the ship after a 2-9 season in 2020. We'll be back to basketball soon enough! Stay in touch at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and we'll be back before you know it. Learn more about your ad choices. #336 - Secret Scrimmage!
Duke will be holding a private, secret scrimmage against Villanova in the preseason and the DBR Podcast crew is here to tell you how it will work and what kind of intel we may get from it. Plus, the guys get into the news that Duke's star freshman Paolo Banchero has signed with CAA, the biggest talent agency around, for NIL deals. Jason, Sam, and Donald explain how CAA will help Paolo cash in and what all of this means for Duke. After the break, the guys get into the ACC's new partnership with the Big Ten and the PAC 12, including how it could help push Notre Dame toward joining the ACC in football. And it has nothing to do with sports but stick around at the end for a conversation about Marvel movies, Better Call Saul, and Ted Lasso. Yup, we cover a little bit of everything here on the DBR Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#335 - Andy Borman speaks on Kyle Filipowski
We have another great guest on Episode 335 of the DBR Podcast. This week, former Duke Basketball and Soccer player and 2001 national champion Andy Borman stops by to chat with Donald and Jason. The meat of the conversation focuses on Kyle Filipowski, a recent Duke commit that Andy Borman coached on the AAU circuit. Andy discusses Filipowski’s strengths with Jason and how the recruiting process played out with future coach Jon Scheyer. Andy will have you ready to have this kid on campus! He also discusses how Covid disrupted their AAU season in 2020 and how that affected Filipowski’s development. We end with his thoughts on Coach K’s retirement (Andy Borman is Coach K’s nephew) and how he’s enjoyed reliving his time with the 2001 national championship team through Return to Glory, which returns in September. We end with Andy’s time on the soccer team under legendary coach John Rennie and some of the old school tactics he would use after a tough loss. After the Andy Borman interview, we quickly react to it and then mention the upcoming official visits of two other Duke recruits, Jaden Schutt and Mark Mitchell. Countdown to Craziness is going to be an especially incredible night this year, and one of those players will be able to take it all in. Learn more about your ad choices. #334 - Coach K speaks at the K Academy
Coach Mike Krzyzewski met virtually with the press before the start of his annual K Academy, and the DBR Podcast was there to capture it all! Coach K jumped on to discuss his summer and some of the ups and downs of his final summer as Duke’s head coach. We discuss some of his best and most intriguing answers from the media, from how he’s been able to bond with his team to personal loss his family experienced over the summer. More importantly, you can tell that K is ready to take on his final season and has been investing most of his time into this team. We also had a few others on the press conference. Joey Baker, Wendell Moore, Jeremy Roach, and Amile Jefferson all took questions from the media, and we have some of the best soundbites they produced as well. It’s a very entertaining episode of reactions, but if you aren’t excited about this upcoming season yet, we guarantee that Coach, Joey, Wendell and Amile will get you excited! #333 - The Non-Conference Schedule is Out!
We've had hints about it for weeks but now Duke has formally released the non-conference schedule and the DBR Podcast crew has plenty of thoughts about who Duke will be playing this coming season. We look at the hidden games that may be more of a challenge than they appear and also speculate about the gaps in the schedule that could prove to be spots for early ACC conference games. After the break, we also break down the NCAA report that recommends playing the men's and women's Final Four in the same city. Is it a good idea and how will it impact interest in the women's game? Oh, and don't miss the first five minutes of the episode where Jason, Donald, and Sam spend way too much time talking about where you can ear the best fast food chicken sandwich. I mean, that is the content you are tuning in for, right? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#332 - Dariq Whitehead commits, Matthew Hurt signs with Rockets
Dariq Whitehead becomes the first top 10 recruit to commit to the Jon Scheyer era, and we’re here to discuss it all on Episode 332! Donald is hosting live from his penthouse suite in Las Vegas, where he concludes his soccer travels, and Jason and Sam are also here with much heartier voices to discuss the commitment of the #6 player in the ESPN100 for the Class of 2022. We break down what the Whitehead decision means for the Duke Blue Devils and what he will bring to the team when he heads to Durham next year. The conversation hits a tangent when we discuss the swag of past and present Duke coaches. After the break, Matthew Hurt was the final Duke player that entered the NBA Draft this year that needed a team. He finally found one, signing a 2-way deal with the Houston Rockets. We discuss what he will need to do to get some playing time in H-Town this season. Don’t forget, rate and review, subscribe and share the podcast! #331 - Flipping out over Filipowski
Super skilled big man Kyle Filipowski has become the very first recruit reeled in by head-coach-to-be Jon Scheyer. The DBR Podcast crew has been following Filipowski's high school and AAU progress for a while and are super excited to have Kyle on board. We talk about the parts of his game that make him a special recruit and break down some of what we have learned about him on the summer AAU circuit. After the break, we have NBA news to discuss including how Duke players did in the NBA draft last night. Podcast co-host Jason Evans is excited about Jalen Johnson joining his hometown Atlanta Hawks and we also look at the landing spots for DJ Steward and Matthew Hurt. And, before we are all done, there's a little bit of football news including a big honor for Duke's best offensive player. Learn more about your ad choices. #330 - Conference changes coming
The DBR Podcast crew takes a deep dive into how the implosion of the Big 12 could impact the future of the ACC and Duke. We talk about which schools the ACC might be interested in bringing into the fold and what could happen if someone like the SEC comes calling for some of the ACC's football heavy hitters. Then, after the break, we are back to basketball with the release of more summer practice scrimmage footage from Durham. Jason Evans actually took the time to chart every single play in the scrimmage video and has some stats to share. Finally, we wrap it up with the latest from the recruiting trail. One big-time recruit is only days away from making his choice known and we let you in on the latest deadeye shooter that Coach Scheyer is eyeing for Duke's future. Learn more about your ad choices. #329 - Jay Bilas on Jalen Johnson and the NBA Draft
The DBR Podcast's ongoing series with ESPN Draft analyst and beloved Dukie Jay Bilas concludes with a look at Jalen Johnson. Jalen is the Dukie will will almost certainly hear his name called first in the 2021 Draft, but he is also a player many Duke fans don't want to even think about because of the way he left the team in the middle of the season. The Podcast crew asks tough questions about Jalen, including whether Bilas considers Johnson to be a member of "the Brotherhood." His answer may surprise you. Learn more about your ad choices. #328 - DJ Steward draft preview with Jay Bilas
On our second NBA draft preview episode, Jay Bilas is back on the Duke Basketball Report Podcast to discuss former Duke guard DJ Steward, who dazzled in his one season in Durham, but who is not currently projected to be picked in the two rounds of the 2021 NBA draft, scheduled for next week. We start with a quick question for Jay about how teams are approaching draft preparation this year following the disrupted COVID season, but then we get into DJ Steward's draft prospects. DJ's size is going to be a challenge, but he proved this year that he was a good defender, scorer, and team player. His combine performance was also somewhat underwhelming, leading Jay to see DJ more as a G League player, at least for the immediate future. Stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and we will be back soon with a preview of Jalen Johnson's draft prospects. Learn more about your ad choices. #327 - Our First Peek at Next Year’s Team
This week, we got our first look at the 2021-22 Blue Devils in action. The team held a 5-on-5 scrimmage and then released video of the event. The DBr Podcast crew poured over that video to give you everything you need to know about the newcomers and the returning players. Which freshman has us saying, "he just looks so smooth" and which returnee looks like he's put on 20 pounds of muscle? After talking about the scrimmage, we reveal an amazing statistic about Duke athletics, something that Duke does better than any other team in the ACC. Plus, we look at the struggles of Team USA as they prepare for the summer Olympic games. How much does Team USA miss the leadership of Coach K? Learn more about your ad choices. #326 - Jay Bilas’ NBA Draft preview: Matthew Hurt
The DBR Podcast will be previewing Dukies in the NBA draft over the next week or so... and there is no one better to help out with that preview than Duke's own Jay Bilas. Bilas has been an expert on ESPN's NBA Draft coverage for close to two decades and has been pouring over scouting reports and talking to NBA insiders about how the draft will shape up. The DBR is going to have three separate episodes previewing the draft, one focusing on each of the three Dukies hoping to hear their names called on July 29th. This first episode features Matthew Hurt. Jay will tell you all about what NBA teams see -- the good, the bad, and the ugly -- in Hurt's game. And, after the draft talk is done, the podcast crew has a brief discussion about some very interesting measurements to come out of Duke's summer workouts with the 2021-22 team. There is a new strongest Dukie of all time and a new longest Dukies of all time. If that doesn't get you a bit more excited about this coming season, we don't know what will. #325 - NIL era begins, Amile Jefferson joins Duke staff
The DBR Podcast is back with Episode 325, which covers a few topics related to Duke Basketball. We begin by discussing the impending addition of 3-time Duke captain and national champion Amile Jefferson to the Duke Men’s Basketball staff as Director of Player Development. Needless to say, we’re really excited about Amile returning to Durham, and we talk about what he can bring to the staff. We also discuss some recruiting news as Top 10 recruit in the Class of 2022 Dariq Whitehead will announce in the next month where he will go to school. Duke has a great chance of getting the 6’6’ SF, so we break down his game and what his commitment could mean to the Blue Devils. After the break, the name, image, and likeness era has begun. We talk about what it means for Duke, what Duke players have done so far, and some of the quirky (and huge) deals that have already been inked by college athletes across the country. We end with a note about Grant Hill joining Duke’s Board of Trustees. Don’t forget to subscribe and leave a 5 star review if you love what you’re hearing! Learn more about your ad choices. #324 - Recruiting update and Big Ten Challenge
With news coming out that Duke will be playing Ohio State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge, the DBR Podcast crew hops on the line to chat about that matchup and a few other interesting ones in the Challenge. Also, it looks like the Scheyer era is really ready to begin as Duke's coach in waiting may be about to get his first official commitment from a class of 2022 recruit. We will tell you who the player is and talk about the connection he already has to the Duke program. And, after the break, we get into the TBT, the million dollar winner-take-all basketball tournament that is about to start. There may not be many Duke names in this year's edition but we fantasize about what a Duke team would look like in the TBT. Learn more about your ad choices. #323 - Delayed reactions
On this episode of the DBR Podcast, we get into a few NBA topics before discussing Brendan Marks's and Seth Davis's article at The Athletic this week about the process Duke took to promote Jon Scheyer to head coach of the men's basketball team. Quick disclaimer: we recorded this episode on Wednesday 6/23, so our analysis may be stale, if hopefully not outdated. First, we dive into combine measurements, where Duke guys ran the gamut from long (DJ Steward) to large (Matthew Hurt). If you want to know why your Duke-centric optimisim about Duke players in the draft is not reflected in mock drafts, you may find evidence in the results herein. After the break, we discuss The Athletic's behind-the-scenes look at Jon Scheyer's promotion, including the surprising revelation that it was a weeks-long process that had most fans and media completely in the dark. #322 - Sports attorney Len Simon joins the show
On this special episode of the Duke Basketball Report Podcast, we talk to Len Simon, a Duke alumnus and attorney who has worked on a variety of legal cases around the business of sports. He has been involved in various capacities at Duke advising the administration on legal issues, and he brings a lot of experience in both professional and college sports to the conversation. WIth Len, we talk through all kinds of issues, including the questions about name, image, and likeness, that are currently hovering over the NCAA. The latest inflection point is the Alston case, in which the Supreme Court this week ruled unanimously against the NCAA limiting benefits to student-athletes for educational expenses. Len also walks us through California's name, image, and likeness legislation, and he has a great explanation for the complexities still remaining as the NCAA and athletic departments around the country adjust to the changing winds of athlete empowerment. After the break, we react to Len, and we're all at least in agreement that he should be back again soon on the show. #321 - Chris Carrawell earns a promotion
On the 321st episode of the DBR Podcast, Jason and Donald gather on Father’s Day (with Sam absent this show due to scheduling conflicts) to discuss a few different Duke-related topics. The main one is the promotion of Chris Carrawell to associate head coach. We discuss how this will work under Jon Scheyer and how his staff will come together once he officially takes over next April. We also get into which Dukies are left in the NBA Playoffs, with Luke Kennard in the Western Conference Finals and either Seth Curry or Cam Reddish carrying the Brotherhood torch into the Eastern Conference Finals. We discuss how Curry and Kennard have been playing and even get into some trivia regarding the upcoming NBA Draft Lottery and the history of the Detroit Pistons in that lottery. Finally, we touch on Jayson Tatum being added to the USA Men’s Olympic Basketball Team and whether other Duke players could join him in Tokyo. RJ Barrett is hoping to help Canada qualify for the Olympic tournament. We end with a note on the transfer portal and the NCAA’s plans to pass name, image, and likeness regulations at their meetings this week. #320 - Top Coach K teams & wins, fans coming back to Cameron
We have a shorter episode of the DBR Podcast for you this week, with Jason Evans recording from a McDonald’s parking lot and Donald’s voice sounding like a mix between a blender and a weed trimmer. Sam is our host as he guides us through a few random topics related to Duke Basketball. Andy Katz listed his top 10 Coach K-led teams as well as Coach K’s top wins at Duke, and Jason is not here for his list. We react with some of the teams and wins that should have received way more love from Katz. We also dip into the news that Duke Athletics will be welcoming fans back to all stadiums this fall for home games, including Cameron, and will do so at full capacity. We talk about how scarce (and expensive) Duke Blue Devils tickets could be to see the GOAT in Cameron during this last ride. Do you have a season ticket this year? Email us at DBR Podcast at Gmail dot com to let us know what your number would be to sell your ticket to the UNC game, which will be Coach K’s final game in Cameron Indoor Stadium. We also talk about the Duke Men’s Basketball clip that shows the freshmen making their way to campus for the first time. After the break, we get back into the name, image, and likeness issue, with NCAA president Mark Emmert heading to Capitol Hill to unsuccessfully lobby for Congress to pass legislation that will help the NCAA do its job. Naturally, we have some words for the laziness and inefficiency being shown by the NCAA as the clock ticks closer to July 1st. Learn more about your ad choices. #319 - Who is Jon Scheyer?
The man who will be leading the Duke basketball program into the future is someone we have seen a lot of on the court and the sidelines, but how well do we really know him? The Duke Basketball Report Podcast went in search of the real Jon Scheyer by talking to sports journalist Jordan Brennan. Jordan has written numerous articles on Scheyer and has known Jon since he was just a hoops player for Glenbrook North high school. A former editor for ESPN Magazine, Jordan has unique insight into how head-coach-to-be Scheyer will chart his course through the changing world college hoops. #318 - Coach K’s retirement announcement is official
The DBR Podcast is back again for more coverage and discussion of the enormous news that Mike Krzyzewski is ending his career of over four decades as the Duke Men's Basketball head coach, and that Jon Scheyer is taking his place in that job. Donald is unfortunately still not completely with us, but we soldier on with some limited audio from him. We begin with a discussion of how Duke got to this day and all of the challenges and considerations that went into the joint decision to announce Coach K's retirement on the same day that the program announced Scheyer's promotion. Jason notes how the timing of the announcement dovetails perfectly with Nina King's elevation as Duke's newest athletic director. After the break, we get to talk extensively for the first time about now head coach in waiting, Jon Scheyer. We feel good that he will bring his recruiting prowess to the top job, but what else are we looking for as he assumes arguably the highest-profile job in college basketball? Return to Glory - Scheduling announcement
The Duke Basketball Report's special series on the oral history of the 2001 Duke Blue Devils Men's Basketball National Champions, Return to Glory, will be taking a short break and will not be releasing a full episode this week. The series will be back next week with a deep dive into the best stories about Coach K from the 2001 team. But, Return to Glory host and producer Jason Evans didn't want you to go away empty handed this week, so this week's shortened episode does include a funny story about Andre Buckner as told by Jay Williams. #313 - Baldwin makes his choice
If it is kinda rare for Duke to be runner up on a top tier recruit, it is almost unheard of for the player to choose a tiny mid-major instead, but that is just what Patrick Baldwin Jr. did Wednesday morning, going on national TV to announce he will play for his father at Wisconsin-Milwaukee rather than playing for Coach K at Duke. We break down Baldwin's decision, what we understand about it and what we don't. Plus, the podcast crew also looks at the news that the NCAA is going to try to get name, image, and likeness legislation passed in the next few weeks, opening the door for athletes to make money off their fame and skill starting this fall. As you can imagine, we are pretty skeptical that the NCAA will get this figured out in a way that makes sense and Sam chimes in with a bold prediction about some unexpected fallout from the whole thing. Return to Glory Ep. 6 - Crushing Carolina
Welcome to Episode 6 at our oral history of the 2001 Duke Men's Basketball National Champions. When we last left the Blue Devils, they had lost their big man, Carlos Boozer, and were counting on little used Casey Sanders and Reggie Love to man the middle. But the really bad news was Duke's next opponent, the North Carolina Tar Heels with some of the best big men in college basketball. What happened next was shocking. Duke blew the Tar Heels out, playing fast and small and showing more heart than anyone thought possible. Join DBR Podcast host Jason Evans as he talks with Shane Battier, Casey Sanders, Mike Dunleavey, Jay Williams, Reggie Love and the rest of the 2001 team about that fateful game against UNC. #312 - Patrick Baldwin rumors, Dukies in the NBA
We have some news to cover as we await the big news of the week on Episode 312. As we await Patrick Baldwin Jr.’s decision on where he will attend college, the crew discusses some speculation surrounding which school will be the one the heralded high school senior chooses at some point this week. We also tap into how his father’s tenure at UW-Milwaukee could influence his decision. Duke Men’s Basketball are also rumored to have set up another multi-team event for next season, and we quickly react to what adding Hartford, Campbell, and the Army Black Knights would do to Duke’s already strong non-conference schedule. Then, we get into Dukies in the NBA, highlighting Frank Jackson’s recent emergence with the Detroit Pistons, Jayson Tatum’s 60-point night for the Boston Celtics, and Zion Williamson becoming All World for the New Orleans Pelicans. Jason Evans has some Zion stats that will make you require to pick up your jaw off the floor! After the break, we react to the 4 Blue Devils that were selected in the NFL Draft and the 3 players who signed undrafted free agent deals. It was a great night for Coach David Cutcliffe and the program! We finally end with some quick kudos for Kara Lawson and Duke Women’s Basketball for recruiting a team full of players from the transfer portal. #311 - Interview with Kevin White & Nina King
The DBR Podcast has a great interview lined up for Episode 311! The crew gets to sit down with outgoing Director of Athletics Dr. Kevin White and Senior Deputy Director of Athletics/Administration, Legal Affairs and Chief of Staff Nina King. It’s a great look into how Duke Athletics operates under the leadership of this dynamic duo! We ask them about several topics that fall under the purview of the athletic department, from One And Done and the transfer portal that is open for all sports to how they’re able to successfully keep up with over 20 athletic programs. We dive into their thoughts on the upcoming changes regarding student-athletes profiting off their name, image, and likeness, and we even follow up with how the university maintains contact with athletes who turn pro early and want to continue their college education. Relive every second of it, straight from the mouths of the players, in episode 4 of Return to Glory, the story of the 2001 Duke National Champions. #310 - Jaylen Blakes joins Duke and his coach joins us
Sometimes on the DBR Podcast, we talk to former, current, and even future Duke players about what it's like to join the Duke program and what it's like to be a member of the Duke program. This time, we're talking to somebody who hasn't been a Duke guy himself, but who has facilitated a few Duke careers. Joe Mantegna has been the head coach at Blair Academy, a prep school in New Jersey, since 1999. He has sent a handful of players to Duke, most famously Luo Deng in 2003 and now most recently 4-star combo guard Jaylen Blakes, who committed to Coach K this week. Coach Mantegna joins the podcast to talk about Blakes's game and his development as a player and a member of the Blair program since his freshman year. From somebody who has seen Blakes play and grow more than anybody else has, Coach Mantegna is confident that Blakes is going to be a key member of the Duke program for a long time. After the break, we check in on some recent odds out of Las Vegas on the national championship hunt for 2022. Is Duke a good bet this year? Either way, this podcast is not investing advice. Finally, we wrap with a discussion on the inevitable rivalry between incoming Duke forward Paolo Banchero and recent Gonzaga commitment Chet Holmgren. ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony says that Banchero is now projected as the top draft pick in the 2022 draft, and we are excited for the Duke-Gonzaga game in November. #309 - Emergency Pod! Henry Coleman enters the portal
Argh! The podcast crew is stunned and saddened by the news that Henry Coleman is leaving Duke and seeking a new place for his basketball talents. We loved Henry, partially for his contributions on the court but mostly for what he represented off the court. We are going to miss Henry's thoughtful press conferences and we talk about other players similar to Henry who chose to stick it out at Duke and what those players became. After the break, we turn to an unexpected topic, European soccer/football. Believe it or not, the chaos this week regarding the European Super League could have ramifications for the future of college sports too. Learn more about your ad choices. #308 - Nolan Smith gets a promotion
For a couple of weeks, the Duke Basketball Report Podcast has been speculating about potential transfers who might be coming into the program following a few announcements of departures. We got some news on that front this week in the form of Theo John and Bates Jones, but the transfer news is overshadowed by former Duke All-American and National Champion Nolan Smith's promotion from Director of Basketball Operations to Assistant Head Coach. We start with Nolan, not just because he's filling Nate James's sizable shoes on the Duke bench, but because all three of the hosts of this show are huge fans of Nolan Smith the basketball player and Nolan Smith the man. We break down some of our favorite Nolan Smith moments and qualities before diving into his introductory press conference, which was a celebratory affair not just for Nolan but also for the media in attendance, many of whom know him well. After the break, we discuss the transfer announcements of big men Theo John and Bates Jones. We speculate that John should actually get a few minutes of burn behind Mark Williams and Paolo Banchero as a banger around the rim, and though Jones may not get to play much in a now crowded front court, he will be a key practice player and leader. Both John and Jones are transferring in from programs run by reputable coaches. John played his first four years at Marquette for former Duke player and assistant Steve Wojciechowski and Jones played down the road at Davidson for Bob McKillop. They reflect on what it was like to play in Cole Field House and talk about some of the crazy antics they saw from the rabid Maryland fans. And they talk about that epic game itself, the one that has come to be known as The Miracle Minute. Maryland was blowing Duke out, but the team never lost faith. #307 - Farewell Matthew Hurt
Just when you thought today's podcast content was limited to an interview with one of Duke's most prominent alumni, the Duke Basketball Report Podcast is back for a second episode to discuss the not entirely surprising announcement that Matthew Hurt is leaving Duke to pursue his NBA dreams. We spend the first segment of the podcast reminiscing on Matthew Hurt's second season in Durham, which the three of us agree was one of the most impressive sophomore campaigns that we can remember. Hurt promised that he would spend the summer of 2020 bulking up and improving his scoring, and he delivered an All-ACC season full of daggers. Sam makes some potentially lazy comparisons to Duke scorers of yore, Jason admires Hurt's commitment to development, and Donald notes how Hurt became Duke's most consistent player in an otherwise strange year. After the break, we dive into Hurt's NBA prospects. We agree that he is destined for a second round pick, but could Matthew Hurt be slated for a big early impact in the league? Stay in touch with us at dbrpodcast at gmail.com, and don't forget to fill out the listener survey at tinyurl.com/dbrpodcastsurvey. We'll be back whenever Duke news pops again. #306 - Interview with David Rubenstein
In a relatively slow news week, we have the chance to sit down with one of Duke University’s greatest philanthropists and leaders. David Rubenstein, class of 1970 and former chairman of the Duke Board of Trustees, joins the DBR Podcast for a great conversation! Before we get to David, Jason has some news on the recruiting front about a 4-star point guard that the Duke Blue Devils have recently shown interest in bringing to Durham. Jaylen Blakes, who went to the same high school as former Duke great Luol Deng, is considering Duke along with several other schools, including Pitt. We discuss that briefly at the top. Then, we sit down with David Rubenstein, who gives us a lot of insights on life at Duke, his interactions with Coach K, and tells us his motivation for getting into university development and his philanthropic efforts both at Duke and in Washington, DC. It’s a terrific interview that you don’t want to miss. Finally, Jason teases us with what we can hear on the 3rd episode of Return to Glory! Don’t forget, our survey is still up for you to fill out if you haven’t yet, and we will share the results soon. Also, keep subscribing and tell your friends...we got more great content coming soon! This time, we are talking about practice including some epic battles between the big men and a very special player who never appeared in a game that season, but who made a huge difference in the performance of the team. Plus, we share more than a few laughs as we find out what was going on in the showers after practice was done. #305 - Big-time recruit Paolo Banchero interview
He is expected to be a big part of Duke's resurgence in 2021-22. The DBR Podcast sits down for a conversation with power forward Paolo Banchero, one of the top players in the class of 2021. He tells us about what to expect from his game and also reveals the recruiting pitch that Duke made to sell him on coming to Durham. He's a thoughtful young man and clearly seems dedicated to makin next year's Blue Devils into a formidable national contender. And the recruiting talk isn't done yet. Duke is working hard in the transfer portal to find experienced college basketball players who want to become Blue Devils. One of them, Furman PF Noah Gurley, is about to make his decision and the podcast team talks about what he would bring to the table and what his recruitment says about the Duke roster. #304 - Hail to the champs and UNC gets a new coach
The college basketball season is done and the Duke Basketball Report podcast crew is here to praise the Baylor Bears for their victory over Gonzaga. The guys see plenty of stuff in the championship game that can be applied to next year's Duke team, especially the focus on guard play. Plus, we look at the news that North Carolina has hired Hubert Davis as their next head coach, which was hardly a surprise. Donald thinks it was a good decision by UNC, Sam thinks it is a sign Carolina is not modernizing their approach, and Jason see both good and bad in the hiring decision. We bring it all home with a quick look at the pre-pre-preseason polls for next year in college basketball. Where do the experts see Duke and do we agree with their assessment of the 2021-22 Blue Devils? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. #303 - Welcome Trevor Keels, Goodbye DJ Steward
Welcome to the Duke Shooting Guard Report. The podcast team is torn as they celebrate the commitment of 5-star high school wing Trevor Keels, but lament the departure of wing DJ Steward to the NBA Draft. Jason, Sam, and Donald look back on the highlights of DJ's time in Durham and look forward to what Keels brings to the table. We even answer the question -- would you rather have a soph DJ or a freshman Trevor? Plus, we wish Nate James luck in his new gig as head coach at Austin Peay by playing a little game -- can you name all the former K players and staffers who are currently in head coaching gigs? No cheating by looking it up! The final few names don't come to mind as quickly as you might think. #302 - Nate James to Austin Peay, Roy Williams retires
April 1st is April Fools Day, and it’s supposed to be a day light on actual news. Well, there was a ton of news that dropped, so the DBR Podcast crew jumped on to talk about the coaching news on Episode 302. The episode was recorded about 15 minutes before DJ Steward announced he was leaving the Duke Blue Devils to enter the NBA Draft, so there will be more analysis of that news this weekend. First, we start with the news that Nate James is set to leave Duke to take over the head coaching job with the Austin Peay Governors. We discuss what this means for Duke and who will possibly fill his spot as an assistant head coach on Coach K’s staff. Could it be Nolan Smith getting a promotion, Steve Wojciechowski returning to his alma mater, or could someone else be waiting in the wings? After the break, the big national news was that Roy Williams retired as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels. We discuss what it means for UNC, for the rivalry, and for college basketball.
