Ep 203BWI Daily: Top 150 WR Rodney Gallagher joins the show

The Penn State recruiting class of 2023 is off to a hot start with several top 100 players this cycle. One key recruit in those efforts is four-star receiver from Laurel Highlands high school, Rodney Gallagher. The uncommitted Pittsburgh native joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about his recruitment, what he wants in a school at the next level and more.Host Thomas Frank Carr starts the conversation with Gallagher off with basketball. The two-sport star recorded the show with T-Frank days before the WPIAL 5A Boys Basketball Championship game against New Castle. Gallagher and T-Frank discuss the WPIAL tournament to that point, the game, which Laurel Highlands won, and how basketball makes Gallagher a better football player. After that, they shift over to Gallagher’s recruitment. He tells T-Frank which schools he’s been in contact with the most and how he feels about the process during the middle of basketball season. In a previous interview, the do-it-all athlete had stated that he’s not thinking about official visits during his basketball season. Still, he does understand the process and explains how he tries to keep in contact with schools.Next, they discuss Gallagher’s game on the field instead of the hardwood. Gallagher has played multiple positions for Laurel Highlands over several seasons but has spent most of his time at quarterback. He explains how that situation came to be and then gives a definitive answer after T-Frank asks what position he sees himself at most. He feels so strongly that one school has switched up its recruitment to suit his vision, it seems.Once they finish talking shop, they discuss what’s next for Gallagher. He tells T-Frank what he plans to do differently this fall and then details how he’s planning on going all-in on football this offseason. Aside from camps, he plans on going after one area of his game very hard this spring and summer. While he doesn't give a firm timeline on his recruiting process, he is adamant on one key thing. From there, they discuss what’s important to Gallagher in a fit for the next level. What does he want from the situation? He gives a clear vision of what he is looking for in the school and the playing situation at the next level. They wrap up with a fun “get to know you” segment before Gallagher’s answers spark a question about NIL.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 201BWI Daily: Impressions from winter workouts, wrestling preview with Greg Pickel

On Thursday, Penn State football held their annual max testing day open to the media. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel were at Holuba Hall to take in the sights and sounds.Pickel starts by giving you his general impressions of the day and the environment in the makeshift weight room. Penn State is undergoing major renovations to its weight-lifting facility, so the team set up a makeshift quarter in Holuba Hall. What did Pickel think of the situation, and how the team responded? Next, he gives you who he thought was notable during the lifting session.T-Frank then brings up two freshmen in running back Nick Singleton and defensive tackle Zane Durant. New strength coach Chuck Losey singled out two players as having exceptional winter conditioning workouts among the first-year players. Then, he asks Greg to fill listeners in on what Losey had to say about the young quarterbacks who enrolled in January. T-Frank follows up with his impressions of the young gunslingers during his evaluation process. He thinks what Losey said should give fans even more hope about the future of five-star quarterback Drew Allar.Next, Pickel fills T-Frank in on what he saw from Penn State's injured or absent players in 2021. Hakeem Beamon, Adisa Isaac, and PJ Mustipher were all at the liftings session, and Pickel gave his thoughts about what they looked like in that setting. While the details about Mustipher's injury aren't precise, T-Frank thinks he has a good idea of the timeline for his return based on what he saw on Thursday. They shift to the young defensive linemen that lifted on Thursday because T-Frank spent a good bit of time watching them lift. Fatorma Mulbah and Jordan van den Berg both drew praise from Losey, and T-Frank now thinks they can be contributors this spring at the tackle position. Along with his observations of Amin Vanover's build, that gives some insight into the depth and talent this spring. However, Pickel disagrees and gives his reason why. After that, they shift to Penn State's young offensive line and discuss Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall. How did they look? T-Frank and Pickel discuss what they saw from each. Finally, they wrap up the show with a preview of the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament, which is coming up this weekend. Penn State may be the favorite to win the tournament, but Pickel thinks it won't be a walk in the park. He details the areas that Penn State needs to get support, the key wrestlers, and highlights matchups that everyone should hope they get to see in the finals.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 200BWI Daily: Mailbag questions ahead of spring practice

Penn State football is only a few weeks away from the start of spring practice, and questions abound about who is standing out, who needs to stand out, and what to expect later this month. That's why the BWI Daily Edition takes your questions once a week. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Dave Eckert take questions submitted to the show through Twitter or the BWI message board.Want to submit a question to T-Frank? Join BWI and get access to the Lion's Den!Note: Today's episode was recorded before Penn State's max testing day. A breakdown of what BWI saw and heard at Holuba Hall will come to you on Friday's edition. After reviewing the day's activities that have yet to happen, they start with a question about spring practice and which players or positions T-Frank and Eckert are keen to learn more about this year. He also asks if any players have stood out so far in winter workouts that have leaked to the media. T-Frank answers the first part of the questions with the answer to the second. Meanwhile, Dave lists several players he wants to know more about this spring.Next, they transition to several questions that lead to a long conversation about the defensive line. Should Amin Vanover play defensive end or tackle? T-Frank gives some thoughts about the defensive tackle position and Vanover's fit on the edge. After that, they answer a question about Adisa Issac's availability this winter for conditioning. After wrapping up their discussion about the defensive line, T-Frank and Eckert look at Penn State linebacker Ellis Brooks. Brooks is not at the combine, and one viewer wants to know why he's such an afterthought in the draft process. T-Frank and Eckert give their thought. From there, they get into depth chart predictions for the spring. One viewer wants to know who the starters and backups will be along the offensive line this spring, while two others have questions about the special teams unit and who will kick for the Nittany Lions. This spring, Penn State won't have its full compliment at either position, but T-Frank and Eckert discuss that situation.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 199BWI Daily: Penn State players at the NFL Combine

This week, Penn State football is sending eight players to the 2022 NFL Combine in Indianapolis. While the testing had interviews have already begun, the on-field television portion starts on Thursday. To get you ready for what to expect, host Thomas Frank Carr and Senior Editor Nate Bauer discuss what they expect from Penn State's contingent at the combine. They start with Bauer's article from Wednesday detailing how Penn State's top 'freaks' safety Jaquan Brisker and linebacker Brandon Smith should test. The Athletic's Bruce Feldman moved Brisker up in his rankings based on his performance this past season and what he's projected to run at the combine. Bauer details those numbers, and T-Frank gives context to what they mean. After that, T-Frank gives one drill that he thinks Brisker needs to succeed in showing off his considerable talents. From there, they discuss Smith and his expected testing numbers. This conversation quickly shifts from Smith's physical abilities to his play in 2021, which was sub-par to expectation. So will that change his draft stock? Bauer thinks there's a chance while T-Frank isn't so sure. He gives why he believes that Smith will still be a Day 2 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Also, is there validity to the conversation of Brandon Smith switching positions to edge defender? T-Frank has no time for the discussion and gives his reasons why. That conversation then leads into another one about the traits necessary to play through contact, how Penn State selects players from high school, and Smith's ability to learn that trait in the future. T-Frank then gives a key number for a drill he thinks Smith needs to ace to solidify his profile as a coverage player. Finally, T-Frank asks, which player will be the top freak at the combine? They both give their answers. Next, they discuss Penn State's left tackle, Rasheed Walker. T-Frank is particularly frustrated with Walker's evaluation because he doesn't know what to do with him. Bauer asks if he's a left tackle or a different position going forward, and T-Frank admits he doesn't have a good answer. Then, they go into Walker's testing numbers and play to try and find a solution. It eventually evolved into a conversation about Walker's underperforming during his time at Penn State and trying to find a reason. From there, they discuss Penn State's best possible chance of sending a first-round pick to the draft in April in receiver Jahan Dotson. What 40 times is Dotson expected to run? He's possibly the best overall player at his position, but will the NFL covet him on Day 1? T-Frank explains the difference and then points out the holes in Dotson's game that may prevent him from becoming that pick. From there, he gives a drill and a testing result that can help Dotson prove those doubts wrong. After discussing Dotson, T-Frank and Bauer discuss Penn State's defensive end prospects in Arnold Ebiketie and Jesse Luketa. What should you expect out of Ebiketie? T-Frank gives the drills and the numbers that are key for pass rushers. He thinks that both can shine in that role this week as well. Luketa is an exciting prospect with a wide range of outcomes based on this week. If he tests well, could he leapfrog Brandon Smith in the draft? T-Frank and Bauer discuss. Finally, they discuss Penn State's specialist, Jordan Stout. While mostly having fun with the conversation, T-Frank gives one critical metric for punters at the combine. Lastly, they ask the question that frustrated Penn State fans have brought up for a month now. If Penn State had so many great athletes at the NFL Combine, why did they finish 7-6? Bauer and T-Frank bring up the question and give the apparent context to it. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 198Recruiting Show: Recapping On3's updated 2023 rankings

Penn State's recruiting efforts for the Class of 2023 came into sharper clarity this week with the release of the On300 from Blue White Illustrated's parent company. The BWI Daily Edition, Recruiting show focuses on that list and details where Penn State's commits and targets ended up in the new rankings. Then, host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider, Ryan Snyder, go through the most important players.First, they start with Penn State's top committed players. Five-star offensive lineman Jven Williams cracked the top 15 players in the nation, while four-star interior lineman Alex Birchmeier is outside that five-star group. So, could Penn State have two five-star linemen in the same class? Snyder gives his thoughts.Next, they look at the top 100 players in the nation and detail the targets that Penn State has a chance to land. Snyder starts with Thayer Academy tackle Samson Okunlola, who clocks in at 59th nationally. Okunlola has an even split between Penn State, Georiga, Rutgers, and Virginia in the On3 RPM Prediction Machine. So Snyder fills in the context of Penn State's standing with the four-star tackle prospect. He also highlights tackle Kadyn Proctor and receiver Noah Rogers. From there, Snyder singles out Florida defensive tackle Derrick LeBlanc, who is the 71st player in the nation per On3's update. His relationship with a current Nittany Lion is a bonus for Penn State recruiting. How much? Snyder relays which player he's close with and how realistic the possibility is. Later in the podcast, they discuss LeBlanc's teammate, John Walker, who went from unraked to 125.Other players that Snyder goes over include Maryland defensive tackle Jason Moore (89th overall) and 2nd ranked safety in the country, Cameron Seldon, as potential targets in the top 100.From there, they discuss the following 100 players and Penn State's targets in that group. Gonzaga's Evan Link leads this group. The 6-5 tackle jumped 75 spots in the rankings, and Snyder gives the story on how Link made such a giant leap.Linebackers Ta'Mere Robinson, Tony Rojas, and receiver Rodney Gallagher are regional prospects with which Penn State sits in a strong position. Pickel details their movement on the list and gives his thoughts on their Penn State recruiting fit. Penn State commit Neeo Avery also checks in at this part in the list. Finally, Snyder highlights physical freak Joseph Mupoyi from Archbishop Carroll at the defensive end position.Lastly, they look at the final third of the group from 201-300. According to Snyder, quarterback JJ Kohl is a hot name, as is Florida QB Marcus Stokes. Check out the show to hear more about the quarterback situation. They also touch on the running back situation with London Montgomery from Scranton Prep. The 5-9 tailback made the 300 list, but Penn State is seemingly looking elsewhere. Will he get an offer? Again, Snyder gives some details on the situation. Finally, Snyder highlights dark horse defensive end, Jameial Lyons, from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 197BWI Daily: 2023 OL Josh Miller joins the show

Penn State recruiting got off to an early start in the Class of 2023 with three-star lineman from Virginia, Josh Miller. The Life Christian Academy right tackle chose Penn State over Clemson and had Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Tennessee in his top five schools. So what has Miller been doing since his December 20th announcement? Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, invited him on the show to get a better feel for Miller as a person, player, and prospect. They start with breaking news at the time of recording, which was that fellow offensive line commit for the Class of 2023, Jven Williams, was named a five-star prospect by On3. Miller and fellow linemen Alex Birchmeier and Anthony Donkoh recruited Williams to Penn State, so T-Frank asks for Miller's opinion on the matter. Next, he asks what the relationship with the linemen in the class is like and how they get along. From there, T-Frank asks Miller what sort of sports or activities he's up to at this time of year. Miller gives him an account of where he's at physically, what kind of training he's doing and what sports he's playing. After mentioning that he's working on the mental side of the game, T-Frank asks which players he's watching on film to get better. Miller notes college and NFL offensive linemen and peers as well.Naturally, that brings T-Frank to the question of peer recruiting. So who is Miller talking to, and who does he want to join the Nittany Lions in the class? The Colonial Heights native mentions a few names he's been communicating with about joining the group. From there, they talk about Miller's game and what T-Frank has seen of him on film. T-Frank comments that Miller is an advanced technician for his age as a pass protector, and the rising senior lets T-Frank know who he's trained with and how he's matured at the position. Next, they go over another area of strength that Miller shows on film before T-Frank asks him what he's been working on to improve this offseason. Finally, they spend a few minutes discussing Miller's hobbies outside of football. Finally, T-Frank asks him what he'd like to study at Penn State, and Miller blows him away with the 'why' behind his desire to study psychology at Penn State.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 196BWI Live: Penn State spring practice preview, hoops breakdown

The month of March starts tomorrow, which means things open back up for Penn State football shortly. The BWI Live crew of Nate Bauer, Dave Eckert, and Thomas Frank Carr prepare you for spring practice with an in-depth look at the Nittany Lions' roster. However, they start with the highlights of the Class of 2022, Penn State's five-star players. Bauer went through the last ten years of recruiting information to determine how the top quarterbacks, running backs, and defensive ends have performed in their first year. So he shares his findings with the group and extrapolates that to quarterback Drew Allar, running back Nick Singleton, and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton. Two of those players, Allar and Singleton, are early enrollees at Penn State who are already a part of winter conditioning and will participate in spring practice. So next, the trio gets into their projections and expectations for the spring. To start, each panelist gives a player who wants to see at each position and why. Over the next two weeks, they'll take a look at the entire roster, but they'll start with the offense this week.Next, they'll ask for your questions and then have their weekly prediction competition. This week's topic will be standout players from spring practice. Which Nittany Lion will get the most publicity from his coaches and teammates? Each panelist will give their prediction, and fans will vote on their favorite argument and player. T-Frank will count up the votes and announce a winner at the show's end. Finally, they discuss Penn State basketball's lopsided loss to Nebraska last night at the Bryce Jordan Center. It was a rough senior night, losing 93-70 to the 8-21 Cornhuskers. What went wrong? Penn State has now dropped two of three after needing to win out for postseason hopes. The group will discuss the last game and the season to finish the show. Ep 195BWI Daily: Breaking down Penn State's top 2024 targets

Penn State recruiting is still in a dead period, so it's a great time to look ahead to the Class of 2024. So that's what happens on the Friday edition of the BWI Daily. Host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder begin the initial foray into the sophomores, standing out and getting offers from Penn State. They get to that after discussing the news about the Class of 2023 that dropped on Thursday. Penn State commit Jven Williams earned a fifth star from On3, so T-Frank and Snyder discuss the implications for Penn State's 2023 cycle to have a five-star player. It matters for several reseasons that Snyder explains. Could it attract another high-quality offensive lineman? Snyder doesn't think that's the case but does point to other areas in the class it might affect. After that, they start in on quarterbacks for the Class of 2024. Again, Snyder gives the blanket statement that it's early for every position, but he's identified three players Penn state is interested in pursuing. The top player in the nation is North Carolina native Jaydn Davis, but Penn State might have a realistic shot with a different Jayden. Jayden Bradford from South Carolina is an intriguing prospect, Snyder explains. The running back position has high-level offers in Florida, including IMG Academy's Stacy Gage. Still, athlete Quinton Martin from Belle Vernon is possibly the highest priority player in the class. From there, the receiver is an extensive list for Snyder, but not a very clear one at the moment, just like tight end. They hit the offensive line next, with a committed player in Erie native Cooper Cousins. Who else could join Cousins? Jordan Seaton and Peter Jones are two names that come to mind in another very long list.On the other side of the ball, it's another deep class at the defensive end position. So, who are the players that stand out? T-Frank is high on 6-6 Dominic Nichols, while Snyder brings up two other regional players with a high profile inside the Lasch building.Defensive tackle is another deep list with some talent but more questions.Richard James Jr and Jahsear Whittington need to grow some but are intriguing prospects at 6-0 tall.According to T-Frank and Snyder, linebacker Anthony Specca is the highlight of the linebacker group and possibly one of the best players in the state. So what would hold him back? Snyder's information makes him want to see more from Specca this upcoming season. Finally, the defensive backs are stocked with talent in the region this year. But that talent is heading south to IMG. Regional corner prospects Desmond Ricks and Ellis Robinson are heading south for their high school careers. That makes it much harder for Penn State to stay in contact and get an early foothold with them. Snyder then goes through the rest of the corners that are staying local and then checks out the safeties to finish the show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 194BWI Daily: Penn State commit Jven Williams gets a fifth-star, plus mailbag

This week, Penn State football has a new round of winter workout winners, and they take center stage during the BWI Daily Edition Mailbag show. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Dave Eckert answer your questions and discuss the day's breaking news for Penn State recruiting. Before they get to the weekly mailbag, they start with the news of the day. On Thursday, Penn State commit for the Class of 2023, Jven Williams, was given a fifth and final star by On3. It's a part of the updated rankings for the Class of 2023, which will be released next week.T-Frank and Dave discuss how the news impacts Penn State's current recruiting class, and why Williams is impressive. T-Frank goes into what he saw on film from Williams that made him think he could play tackle down the road for the Nittany Lions if he continues to develop. After that, they get to your questions during this week's mailbag episode. They start with a question about the transfer portal. Unlike most questions, one Lions Den Message Board member is interested in who might be leaving the program and what the numbers are like for potential transfers. Eckert keeps track of the scholarship numbers this offseason and tells T-Frank where Penn State is now. They also discuss a much broader topic about player progression due to the COVID-19 disrupted Class of 2020. How badly did that year disturb the progress of players coming to Penn State as freshmen? T-Frank and Eckert admit there's no way to tangibly know the answer but discuss different players and situations that arose from the pandemic.Other topics they dive into include which players had stood out in winter conditioning previously and at the time of recording on Thursday when a fresh batch of social media announcements from the staff went out. What does it mean that freshman defensive tackle Zane Durant keeps showing up as one of the weekly winners of the workout sessions? T-Frank and Eckert discuss the situation at defensive tackle. After several other questions, they land on a pair of questions about the 2022 season. One viewer asks if Penn State will target the tight ends less next season, while another asks if they will be targeted more. Ep 193BWI Daily: 2023 CB Lamont Payne joins the show

Penn State recruiting isn’t just coaches convincing players to join a program. Some of the team’s best recruiters are the players already committed to a class. For the Class of 2023, one of those recruiters is cornerback Lamont Payne. The three-star defensive back from Chartiers Valley in Bridgeville, PA, sat down with film analyst and host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr. They discussed Lamont’s offseason progress, playing hurt in 2023, and who he is pushing to get a commitment from among Penn State’s 2023 targets.Payne Focused on FootballT-Frank begins with getting up-to-speed with where Payne is right now in his offseason progress. The Pittsburgh native doesn’t play basketball, so he’s focused on improving his game, getting bigger, and prepping for track season. First, he updates T-Frank on how much muscle he’s put on this winter and on what parts of his game he’s focused on improving. They also discuss Payne’s play from the 2021 season. T-Frank comments that one of the rising senior’s best traits is his physicality at the line of scrimmage. Is that why Payne is adding the weight? What led to him playing that way. Payne gives excellent insight into what he knows about his strengths and why he plays the way he does. Then, he talks about the college and NFL corners he watches to improve his play.Penn State recruiting in 2023, not just for coachesAfter that, T-Frank asks Payne what he thinks about his classmates and the group of players that the Penn State coaches have assembled so far. Where does he see the strength of the class? Who is he recruiting on the defensive side of the ball? Payne gives his thoughts on the subject and names several key defensive targets, including four-star linebackers Ta’Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas, along with several other players in the Pittsburgh and Virginia areas. Finally, they go deeper into Payne’s game. After suffering an injury early in the year, it wasn't an easy season for Payne. So how did he overcome the situation? First, he talks about the injury and then what toughness means to him as a football player.T-Frank gives more observations about Payne’s playing style and usage at Chartier’s Valley. What does he learn from playing slot receiver that can help him as a defensive back? Payne opens up about that and what he thinks the key is to his ability to make plays on the ball.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 192BWI Daily: The Recruiting Podcast and Daily have merged

This week, Penn State recruiting is making headway with a top target in the Class of 2023. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder cover that, and more on the BWI Daily, Recruiting Show. It's the first show in a new format for the offseason, where the recruiting podcast and Daily Edition merge into one show moving forward. Pickel and Snyder start by discussing Penn State spring break. It's an unusual start to the March contact period, with spring break falling on the university's first full week of the month. Does that cause some problems? Snyder explains that it's not necessarily the case, and there are other more important variables. Next, they move on to discuss four-star Florida running back Tryaun Webb. Webb announced that he'd be taking an official visit to Penn State coming up this spring. Snyder fills Pickel in on the details, including the date of the visit and the feel for Penn State's standing at the moment. After discussing Webb, they open up the conversation to look at the Penn State recruiting picture for 2023. Snyder explains that it's a very muddy picture at the moment and gives some insight into what to expect in terms of numbers and regions that Penn State is targeting. Next, they take a look at Penn State's recent offer in the transfer portal, Jordan Domineck. So what sort of player is the edge defender from Georiga Tech? Snyder and Pickel discuss what they know about the portal prospect. They also examine the Lion's push to get an edge defender in the portal so far this offseason and review the list of offers that have become public. From there, they discuss Florida safety Daemon Fagan's top eight schools. Penn State made the cut in Fagan's recruiting, which includes some of the top schools in the country. So does Penn State have a shot with the American Heritage safety? Snyder gives his thoughts. Finally, the pair examine Penn State recruiting in the Class of 2024. A recent offer went out to a local prospect picking up steam nationally. What does Penn State see in Harrisburg native Rico Scott? Snyder and Pickel discuss. Ep 191BWI Daily: Wrestling dominates Ryder, preview of postseason (with Greg Pickel)

Penn State wrestling concluded their dominance for the 2021-22 season by blanking Ryder 45-0 to cap an undefeated regular season. Reporter Greg Pickel joins the BWI Daily Edition to recap the win and give perspective to the team heading into the postseason. They start with the fact that Penn State had a key lineup change on Sunday. As many had speculated, senior Brady Berge moved down to the 157-pound weight class to wrestle for the season’s final dual. But, according to Pickel, not only won, he gave Penn State something else. So is Berge set at 157? Pickel says there’s more to it than that and explains what he means. To get a perspective on what the change means for head coach Cael Sanderson, Pickel discusses Creighton Edsell’s season at the 165-pound weight class and gives his thoughts on who helps Penn State score as many points as possible during a match. T-Frank also asks Pickel to give his perspective on the latest undefeated season for the Nittany Lions. At times, it was an uneven year with lineup changes and injuries for Sanderson’s squad. S, 2hat characteristics made up this run? Senior Roman Bravo-Young is one player that T-Frank and Pickel have not discussed as much. Brave-Young burst onto the scene as a freshman with viral video-making moves during matches. How has the senior matured over the last four years? Also, what are his indications about a return for a COVID extension? Finally, they turn their attention to the postseason. Is Penn State set up for a run at another Big Ten and NCAA Championship? From there, they move on to discuss Penn State football, which is one month from the start of spring practice. So who are the players or positions that Pickel is interested in learning more about next month? He gives his thoughts about that, and then T-Frank follows up with a discussion about the defensive end position. Penn State has targeted several edge defenders in the transfer portal. Does that mean they’re unhappy with the progress of some of their younger players? Or is it simply a numbers game? Finally, the duo wraps up by discussing the news that the College Football playoff will not be expanding until the current contract runs out in four years. T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts on the topic about if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How did Penn State finally put a complete game together? T-Frank asks Eckert those questions and more about Penn State's back-to-back wins. Additionally, he asks for updates on several key players and their performance in the most recent victories. What is the status of Greg Lee? Ep 187BWI Daily: Ross Tucker Interview on J'ven Williams

When four-star offensive lineman J'ven Williams announced that he was committing to Penn State this winter, he thanked several people. One of those people was former NFL offensive lineman and host of the Ross Tucker football podcast, Ross Tucker. The former Princeton offensive lineman joins the BWI Daily Edition to discuss his role in J'ven's recruitment and fill host Thomas Frank Carr in on what type of person the Nittany Lions are getting. Before getting to Williams, Tucker and T-Frank discuss Penn State's recent recruiting of former Ivy League offensive linemen from the transfer portal. Does Tucker think it's a good plan? And what is it like, jumping from the Ivy League to the NFL or Power Five football? As someone who did just that, Tucker gives his insight into the transition and what Penn State is getting by selecting mature players with playing experience at the offensive line position. Also, as a former player who wanted to play for the university, would Tucker have made the same move? He reminisces about his recruitment and interaction with former Penn State football players in the NFL. After that, Tucker opens up about his role in Williams' recruitment. He explains how they met and what he initially saw from the 6-4 sophomore. He also gives glowing reviews of Williams as a person. Where does he need to improve? Williams lines up in various positions for his high school offense, but they run a unique scheme. Of course, Micah Parsons' emergence, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, was also a positive for the Nittany Lions. A four-star player from Pennridge, Picciotti recently finalized his spring visit schedule, which Ryan published Tuesday morning. Ep 184BWI Daily: Three player who need to ace the Combine

While the current Penn State football players are hard at work in the weight room getting ready for the 2022 season, eight former Nittany Lions are gearing up for the next step in their career. Starting Tuesday, March 1st, these players will put their skills to the test at the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis in front of 32 teams.Which players need to make the most of an impact? You can make a case for any one of them, but host Thomas Frank Carr has picked three players to represent the three critical data-gathering facets of the Combine. After a quick introduction about the Penn Staters that won Super Bowl LVI, T-Frank starts with the interview portion of the Combine. Most fans are not aware of the 15-minute interview sessions outside of the skills testing on the field during the week in Indy. Players meet with interested teams in scheduled blocks of time to ask just about any question they want. While the most bizarre questions make it to the light of day, the more serious questions about play, performance, and personality don't. So who needs to ace the interview portion the most? T-Frank has a candidate that he thinks fits that situation perfectly.Next, he focuses on the testing portion of the Combine. From the famous 40-yard dash to the vertical leap, one player needs to post excellent numbers more than the other seven representatives from Penn State. So why is Jesse Luketa the pick? After all, he just finished an impressive week at the Senior Bowl. T-Frank explains. Finally comes the medical examinations at the Combine. Who has the most checkered injury past? Penn State does not give public details regarding injuries, so this is a murkier topic. Despite that, one player stands out. Finally, T-Frank addresses one related topic to the Combine and the players mentioned on the show. Did some players, like Luketa, make a mistake by declaring for the draft? Would one more year of development change their draft slotting? T-Frank gives his thoughts on what he thinks is a warped perception of money, draft position, and value.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 182BWI Daily: Mailbag with Nate Bauer, Super Bowl Preview with Solomon Wilcots

This week, Penn State football is amid winter workouts while the rest of the sports world is eagerly awaiting the end of the 2021-22 football season with Super Bowl LVI on Sunday. Host Thomas Frank Carr tackles both topics on today's BWI Daily Edition. He answers the show by answering viewer mailbag questions with Senior editor of Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer. The two take questions from both Lions Den Forum subscribers and questions submitted on Twitter. The first topic they dive into deals with the transfer portal. This week, Penn State just secured a commitment from offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad, but they have other holes. Will Penn State be able to fill those holes with a quality player before the start of the 2022 season? T-Frank and Bauer discuss. Next, they tackle the question of the offensive line. In recent weeks, Penn State has been racking up victories in recruiting with offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. But what about the players on the roster? Are any players from the Class of 2020 ready? Who has the pressure to step up? Again, T-Frank and Bauer have differing views. From there, they discuss several other questions, including clarifying T-Frank's earlier comments regarding the complexity of the offense under Mike Yurcich. They also dip into the world of analyst hires and ponder if Penn State is done adding talent off the field. Finally, they discuss the retirement of Penn State strength coach Dwight Galt III. Did Penn State make the right decision by not opening up an external search? How has the transition from Galt to new strength coach Chuck Losey gone? Bauer and T-Frank give their thoughts on the matter. After wrapping up with Bauer, T-Frank shifts gears and looks ahead to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. Emmy award-winning broadcaster and former NFL player Solomon Wilcots joins T-Frank to preview the game from radio row in LA. They start by discussing former Penn State safety Nick Scott, who has been having a phenomenal playoff run for the Los Angeles Rams after stepping in due to injury. Wilcots explains his game and what it takes to play well at safety in the NFL. From there, they discuss the critical matchups and players that will determine the game's outcome on Sunday night. Ep 181BWI Daily: Ryan Snyder Explains the Recruiting Calendar

Penn State recruiting is in the middle of one of the dead periods in the NCAA recruiting calendar, so things have slowed down on that front for the Nittany Lions coaching staff. While recruiting never stops, this is an excellent time to learn more about the process and how things work to acquire more talent for head coach James Franklin's team. With that in mind, recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to teach host Thomas Frank Carr and the viewers how the calendar's rhythm works and when fans should expect commitments or news to break. Before they get into the recruiting calendar, T-Frank asks Snyder about his conversation with new Penn State commit Hunter Nourzad out of Cornell. The Nittany Lions picked up his commitment in a tight race between Iowa and Illinois. So why did Nourzad pick Penn State? Snyder shares that and more information about the portal prospect's decision-making process. He even gives some insight into what position Nourzad might play going forward. After that and a quick conversation about the offensive line, Snyder and T-Frank dive into Penn State recruiting talk. The NCAA recruiting calendar spans all 12 months of the year, so they pick up in February for a real-time discussion. Snyder explains why this month is a dead period and how that's a very recent change to the annual flow. After that, Snyder explains what fans should expect this spring, detailing what sort of contact and visits are allowed in March and April. Then, with spring football just around the corner, it's a big season for Penn State recruiting to lay the groundwork for future commitments with unofficial and official visits. Before moving on, T-Frank asks Snyder to explain the difference between the two types of visits. After his explanation, T-Frank asks if fans should read into future news about one type of visit and its meaning over the other. Then, the pair discuss that and more topics related to how Penn State manages spring football.Snyder and T-Frank work their way through the rest of the calendar, highlighting critical months and different types of contact allowed by coaches during those times. Finally, they end with the cycle Penn State recruiting completed, December and January, which are a mad-dash to the traditional signing day for most teams.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 180BWI Daily: Will the Penn State offensive line be better or worse next year?

This offseason, there might not be a bigger topic for Penn State football fans than the offensive line. Yes, quarterback always dominates the discussion but with sixth-year player Sean Clifford coming back to start another season, his protection is paramount. After a run of offensive line commits over the past two weeks, has Penn State gotten to the point that they will be markedly better in 2022? Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Dave Eckert debate that topic on the BWI Daily Edition. Dave takes the side of optimism on the show and gives his reasoning for Penn State taking a step forward next season up front. He sees the situation improving for several key factors that he lists out in his allotted time. Next, T-Frank, debating on the side of things not getting better, gives his argument. He points to one recurring issue that Penn State had heading into 2021 that they will have again in 2022. What is it? He details that problem and then explains why despite a surge in new players, not all of the pieces fit this offseason perfectly. After they wrap up their arguments, Dave and T-Frank have a chance to respond to the other's presentation with closing thoughts. Then, finally, they wrap up with a general discussion about the offensive line and where some of the issues, positive and negative, might go this year. From there, they discuss Penn State basketball's low-scoring loss to Michigan at the Bryce Jordan Center on Tuesday night. Dave explains how once again, the Nittany Lions put together a great effort but failed to come away with enough offense to win the game. What are the factors that led to this week's loss? How did Greg Lee's absence affect John Harrah? Eckert gets into those details, while T-Frank asks if there's a common theme in losing quality leads in games they need to win. Finally, Dave gives his thoughts before they wrap up, looking ahead to the next game. Ep 179Recruiting Pod: Hunter Nourzad and Jven Williams commit to Penn State

Penn State may be in the midst of a dead period, but it's been anything but over the last couple of weeks for the Nittany Lions. As we detailed last week, Penn State added 2022 offensive lineman Vega Ioane on National Signing Day, as well as 2024 prospect Cooper Cousins a few days prior. Now, they've added two more coveted offensive linemen, the first of which was from 2023 On300 prospect Jven Williams from Wyomissing, Pa. His commitment came this past Saturday, Feb. 5. The nation's 87th-ranked prospect according to the On3 Consensus, Williams is also the top-ranked player in Pennsylvania for the upcoming class. James Franklin and Phil Trautwein then added arguably their most important offensive line commitment yet in Cornell graduate transfer Hunter Nourzad. This past season, Nourzad earned second-team All-America honors by the American Football Coaches Association at the Football Championship Subdivision. He was also named the Ivy League Offensive Lineman of the Year.On today's Blue White Illustrated recruiting podcast, host Greg Pickel and recruiting analyst Ryan Snyder get into both of these additions. They discuss what they mean for Penn State moving forward, as well as what they potentially bring to the team. The pair also take a look at two new RPM predictions that Snyder logged on Saturday in linebacker prospects Ta'Mere Robinson, from Pittsburgh, and Tony Rojas, from Fairfax, Va. Ryan gives his reasoning for picking both players when he did, as well as when a potential decision could come from each. They finish out the podcast discussing what else Penn State fans could look for between now and when the dead period ends in March. Ep 178BWI Daily: Dan Connor joins Penn State Staff, offseason discussion

This week, Penn State football made some off-field additions to their coaching staff, with a former Nittany Lion legend headlining the group. This week, the all-time leading tackler in Penn State history, Dan Connor, joined the program as an off-field analyst. Former Temple running backs coach Gabe Infante and Manny Diaz assistant at Miami, Rick Lyster round out head coach James Franklin's latest acquisition of support staff this year. That's where host Thomas Frank Carr and Senior Editor for Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer start. They examine each hire, starting with Connor. The emotional tie to the university is real, and Bauer thinks that Connor is an excellent fit after beginning his coaching career in high school in this current role. So what will he, Infante, and Lyster be doing? T-Frank lays out some of the essential functions that Penn State needs from their analysts and illuminates how they can add value in multiple ways outside of just x's and o's. From there, they discuss Penn State's other job openings. The university posted a job for an analytics director this week, so T-Frank and Nate discuss the merits of the position and how valuable an in-house data scientist can be. That conversation morphs into one about scheme, talent, and football tactics. T-Frank looks at the Penn State offense through the prism of analytics and explains football reasons why simply following the numbers doesn't work and why only relying on football information can leave you blind. Did Mike Yurcich want to run a specific type of scheme last season? Is that a helpful plan? Did he use it as much as he has in the past? T-Frank takes you through his evaluation of the Penn State offense this season and what you can find when looking at the data and applying football logic. Next, he asks Nate the question, "What did you learn about football this year?" They discuss what lessons they picked up from their football viewing in 2021, and their answers might surprise you. Finally, they wrap up discussing Penn State basketball, which takes on Michigan Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Ep 176BWI Daily: Penn State transfer portal win, wrestling and 2023 recruiting with Greg Pickel

Penn State received word Monday afternoon that they were getting their second commitment via the transfer portal. BWI Daily host Thomas Frank Carr starts the show with the news that Cornell offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad chose the Nittany Lions over Iowa. Nourzad is the latest in a fistful of commitments along the offensive line by assistant Phil Trautwein. T-Frank details who can participate next year and which positions are getting the most significant overhaul. Finally, he details where Nourzad will play for the Trautwein and gives a quick scouting report of Nourzad's skills. After that, reporter Greg Pickel joins the show to recap another undefeated weekend for the Nittany Lions that saw them capture the Big Ten regular-season dual title for 2021-22. Yes, Penn State was undefeated in Big Ten action, but it hasn't been smooth sailing for head coach Cael Sanderson's squad this year. Pickel explains why it was another bumpy weekend for the Lions lineup with more starters absent from competition. It was also a weekend of close finishes that Pickel describes. After discussing the details of the match, T-Frank and Greg have a big-picture conversation about Penn State's BJC duals and how there may be room to grow the sport as a whole with spectacles like the one on Friday night. Finally, they discuss the title-clinching dual on Sunday and how Penn State once again fought through lineup issues to get a win.Next, the duo discusses Penn State's latest commit to the Class of 2023, Jven Williams. This weekend, Williams committed to the Nittany Lions, choosing Penn State over multiple Power Five programs, including Kentucky and Michigan. It's an impressive run by Trautwein, but should Penn State fans be encouraged? Pickel gives his thoughts on the matter. Finally, they look at the Class of 2023 as a whole. The Nittany Lions have traditionally gotten a fast start with classes under head coach James Franklin. Will they be able to keep up the pace and land another top ten class? Or will they fade once five-star prospects choose other schools? Pickel gives his thoughts and examines the difference between in-state and in-region recruiting.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 175BWI Daily: Class of 2023 big board and top targets

Penn State football wrapped up the Class of 2022 earlier this week so it's on to the next cycle. That's not just true for the Nittany Lions, but also Blue White Illustrated recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and the rest of the recruiting world as well. He joins host Thomas Frank Carr to give you Penn State's top targets at each position in the upcoming Class of 2023. They start, as you always should, at the quarterback position. So what's the update with the Nittany Lions' efforts to land their top target, Dante Moore, out of Martin Luther King high school in Detroit? Why are they offering more quarterbacks like Florida prospect Marcus Stokes? Snyder gives his impressions on offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich's efforts to find his next signal-caller. After that, they dip into the equally murky waters of running back for 2023. Is Treyaun Webb the most likely candidate to land in Happy Valley? Can JaJuan Seider work his magic in Florida and get the four-star runner to Pennsylvania? Or will more players emerge and this list expand? Bauer and T-Frank discuss the state of this position before moving on to tight a much clearer position. Receiver has an apparent leader for the Nittany Lions in four-star wideout from the Pittsburgh area, Rodney Gallagher. How many players can Penn State take in this cycle? Snyder gives his thoughts on four-star prospects Noah Rogers, Ejani Shakir, and local Dallastown product Kenny Johnson.Tight end is another set position for Penn State after the commitments of Exeter Township's Joey Schlaffer and four-star prospect Neeo Avery from Good Counsel. It's also the position that's had the most change, with players like Mathias Barnwell likely switching positions and Avery showing great promise as a defensive end. So could Penn State add another player here? Snyder gives his thoughts. The offensive line is not as set as the tight end but already has three committed prospects. Penn State has already secured commitments from two interior players in high four-star talent Alex Birchmeier, Trinity Christian guard Josh Miller and tackle/guard prospect Anthony Donkoh from Alide, VA So, as always, who are the tackle prospects? Snyder mentions several, including national candidates like Luke Montgomery and Chase Bisontis, but Gonzaga's four-star tackle Evan Link is his top target. He explains why. He also brings up several other important players like Thayer Academy's Samson Okunlola but has reservations about where they stand at the moment. The defensive line is chocked with talent, so T-Frank and Snyder start at edge defender and work inside. Five-star edge rusher Nyckoles Harbor leads the list but is joined by his teammate at Archbishop Carrol, Joseph Mupoyi. It's a deep list that includes Top 250 players David Ojiegbe, Dylan Gooden and Desmond Umeozulu. But the list also includes under-the-radar candidates Mason Robinson, and Michael Kilbane. Snyder gives viewers a sense of their possibility, interest level in Penn State and vice versa. The defensive line is not short on talent as we switch to defensive tackle. Penn State already has athlete Mathias Barnwell verbally committed, and the 6-6 athlete prospect recently told Snyder that he'd like to play tackle. Throw on top of that Dematha Catholic standout Jason Moore. The list is already strong before getting to four-star prospects Jason Moore, Derrick LeBlanc, Will Norman, John Walker, Joel Starlings, Justin Benton, and Sydir Mitchell. How many can the Nittany Lions take? How many will they want to take? Snyder gives his thoughts about the group. Finally, T-Frank and Snyder wrap up the show discussing the most important players and positions mentioned that are "can't miss" players for Penn State in this cycle. Ep 173BWI Daily: State of the program update and signing day

Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Wednesday about various topics during the traditional signing day in college football. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss a number of those topics on today's BWI Daily Edition. They start with rules. Penn State, the Big Ten, and the NCAA are all governed by laws changing each year. Franklin brought up several examples of inconsistencies in regulations at the state or university levels that cause conflict and advantages for specific programs. What are those rules? T-Franks plays a clip of one example from Franklin's remarks, and then he and Bauer discuss. How can Penn State stay competitive in the current environment? Bauer has some overarching thoughts. First, he touches on Franklin's personal feelings about change and then University's feelings on the matter. Next, they discuss antiquated aspects of the college football world, including hard scholarship limits. How does that play into a world that has a transfer portal, early enrollees, and NIL? Bauer gives his thoughts on the matter after T-Frank asks him for a possible solution. After that, they discuss Franklin's admitted personal resistance to change. Franklin mentions in a clip that he would prefer things to stay as they were but acknowledges that it doesn't matter what he feels. T-Frank extrapolates that into a deeper conversation about Franklin and his personality. From there, they discuss the football news of the day. Franklin was asked whether or not Sean Clifford will be the starter or if there is an open competition this spring. T-Frank plays Franklin's response, and then he and Bauer discuss what the head coach said. Finally, they touch on the reason for Wednesday's press conference, signing day. Penn State got a rare, traditional signing day committment in a three-star lineman from Washington, Vega Ioane. Franklin gave some information during his press conference that completely changed T-Frank's view of the Graham, WA native. What was it? Bauer asks T-Frank to explain why that news is so important and how it changes what Penn State could be next season. #PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 172Recruiting Pod: National Signing Day discussion, Cooper Cousins commits

Penn State finished up its January contact period on a high note Saturday, adding a commitment from Pennsylvania four-star offensive lineman Cooper Cousins. It was one of a variety of topics that have grabbed headlines in recent days, giving Blue White Illustrated's Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder plenty to discuss on our latest recruiting podcast.Of course, National Signing Day is set for tomorrow, Feb. 2, but with only one committed player left to sign for Penn State, junior college safety Tyrece Mills from Lackawanna College, we're not expecting a ton of drama.Or are we?Penn State is still in the mix with one uncommitted 2022 offensive lineman in Washington native Vega Ioane. The three-star flew out to State College this past weekend for an official visit, and all signs point to him deciding between the Nittany Lions and Washington Huskies tomorrow. Ioane has already announced publicly that he'll decide at 11:45 a.m. ET.Of course, the early signing period and its impact on National Signing Day is also a popular topic now, especially after a hectic coaching carousel and the implementation of the transfer portal. Ryan and Greg discuss their thoughts on that, and whether the early signing period will still be around in years to come. The guys finish off today's podcast with some discussion surrounding the transfer portal. This past week, Penn State offered former North Texas players Gabriel and Grayson Murphy. Both are expected to be important to the Nittany Lions, as they remain in search for linebackers and defensive ends.#PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 171BWI Daily: Big win for hoops Senior Bowl update

In their return to the Bryce Jordan Center last night, Penn State basketball got a massive win with a 90-86 victory over Iowa. Reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to give his thoughts on the game.Host Thomas Frank Carr starts Eckert at the end of the game where Iowa, down for most of the game, forced overtime. How unusual was the play that extended the contest to two overtimes? Eckert details what happened in the final minutes of a game that Penn State controlled for most of the evening. After that, they discuss the overtime period and how the game-tying tip-in from Keegan Murray affected Penn State in the extra minutes. Finally, Eckert details the key players in overtime and how head coach Micah Shrewsberry navigated had his team respond. From there, they work back to regulation and discuss just how rare the performance from big men John Harrar and Greg Lee was. Both were outstanding on the night to a level that, according to Eckert, Penn State hasn't seen in quite some time. However, they had to do the bulk of the work to get Penn State in position to close the game out in the final minutes becuase one key element was missing from the Nittany Lions attack. Eckert details what that was and how it led to a slum in the middle minutes of the game. After wrapping up their discussion about last night, they move on to Penn State's upcoming game against Wisconsin this weekend. Eckert previews what waits ahead of the Nittany Lions in Madison and how the game might unfold. From there, they move on to discuss Penn State Hockey. The team has struggled this season, and Eckert gives his thoughts about what has been going on for head coach Guy Gadowski's squad. Why has the team played better as of late? Why hasn't it translated into wins? Finally, they break that down and forecast the team's postseason chances.Lastly, they discuss the Senior Bowl. In Mobile, practice started earlier this week for several former Penn State players who hope to improve their stock in the 2022 NFL Draft. T-Frank and Eckert discuss Jesse Luketa's change in weight, Arnold Ebiketie's insane measurements, and Jahan Dotson's absence from the event.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 170BWI Daily: Wrestling comes up big, offensive line action and junior day with Greg Piackel

It was a busy offseason for Penn State sports, even if there weren't many games or matches this weekend. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr runs down the weekend's news with reporter Greg Pickel, who joins the show each Monday. Pickel covers wrestling for BWI, so they start with the Nittany Lions 19-13 win over Iowa in a battle of the top two teams in the nation. How did Penn State come out on top? Who scored the pivotal points for head coach Cael Sanderson's squad? Pickel breaks down that and gives his thoughts on the lineup heading into the home stretch for the 2022 season. Finally, he provides a preview of what's to come this week. After finishing up wrestling, T-Frank and Pickel discuss junior day for Penn State football. The Nittany Lions are concluding the open contact period in January and had a jam-packed weekend with top recruits from several classes in attendance. While the Class of 2023 is the primary focus, Pickel starts with the Class of 2022 and a late target in Vega Ioane, an offensive lineman from Washington. After his official visit, Pickel caught up with Ioane this weekend and shared what he had learned. Ioane chooses between Penn State and Washington on Wednesday, and Pickel thinks it's a close race. Stay tuned to BWI for more information as the week unfolds. After Ioane, they shift their focus to new offers that Penn State sent out this week. Several receivers found themselves leaving Happy Valley with an offer from the Nittany Lions, such as Baltimore, Md., St. Frances Academy receiver Ryan Manning and Georgia prospect Colton Hood from McDonough. They discuss several other players that stood out this weekend, including DeMatha Catholic defensive lineman Jason Moore and the new 2024 Penn State commit from McDowell in Erie, Cooper Cousins. Finally, Pickel and T-Frank circle back to the current Penn State football team with two potential transfers. The Nittany Lions offered twin brothers from North Texas, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy. What do they bring to the table? What should you know about their status? T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts on the duo and Penn State's work in the portal. Ep 168BWI Daily: Penn Sate gets commitment, junior day preview with Ryan Snyder

On Friday, Penn State football got a win on the recruiting trail, adding to the Class of 2023. Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to tell you about three-star offensive lineman Anthony Donkoh, who committed to the Nittany Lions this week, and how that shapes the class in the future. He and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the impact of Donkoh, his potential position, and what traits set him apart as a lineman. Snyder details who Penn State beat out for his commitment and some quick highlights about Donkoh off the field. After the breaking news, Snyder and T-Frank discuss the past week in Penn State recruiting, which was full of events inside and outside the organization. They start with Snyder's conversation with Nittany Lion Commit Mathias Barnwell. Next, Snyder details his conversation with "Mega" and how his outlook on where he might play at the next level has changed since he committed. Finally, T-Frank offers some insight about Barnwell's traits and skills that has him excited to watch the future Penn State player during his senior year of high school. From there, the two transition into the other names that have cropped up this week (as of the time or recording) receiving Penn State offers. This week was the final week of the January contract period, so the staff was out on the road investigating their targets. Snyder then mentions that the work is likely not over until the final bell sounds on this open period. Next, they move on to the final rankings for the Class of 2022. On3 finalized their rankings for the upcoming class ahead of the February signing period, so Snyder takes viewers through the names that moved up in the rankings. Dani Dennis-Sutton had a big jump, becoming the highest-rated Penn State's class player. In addition, he highlights several other players moving around in the Top 300, including one Penn State player that had a bigger jump than any other player in the nation. Finally, they get to the list of players arriving in Happy Valley this weekend for the Nittany Lions final junior day. Penn State's coaching staff has stacked this last recruiting day with plenty of high-profile, high-priority talent. Snyder runs down the list, which is heavy with defensive line talent. Then, he singles out some important players and hints at which players he thinks are leaning most towards the Blue and White. The last thing that Snyder and T-Frank discuss is the recruitment of Vega Ioane, an offensive lineman from Washington, in the Class of 2022. Ioane is visiting campus this weekend, and Snyder gives his insight into how important and positive this step is for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 167BWI Daily: Conference realignment, mailbag with Nate Bauer

News surfaced yesterday that may benefit Penn State football dramatically. The Nittany Lions are stuck in the toughest division in college football. But reports this week by The Athletic suggest that the conference is considering doing away with divisions entirely. Is that a good idea? Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about that and more.He and host Thomas Frank Carr start with Bauer's article yesterday on realignment. On top of the Big Ten ramifications, the conference is also considering dropping a conference game and adding in a scheduled ACC and PAC 12 game each year. How would that work? They talk about the realities of the college football landscape, what the future holds for college sports, and how football and basketball are driving change that replaces old notions.Their focus is obviously on how Penn State can benefit from this change and how tenuous the future is for conferences that want to play by old rules. They discuss the role television plays for game selection and how organizations that think outside the box have an advantage. Finally, T-Frank asks how far away these potential changes are and when fans might see a positive or negative effect from said changes.Next, they take questions from viewers of the show. Questions each Thursday are solicited from either the Lions Den message forum or Twitter. They start with a question about special teams and how it might change with the loss of several key players and coaches on Penn State's third unit this offseason. Can Penn State rebound? Nate and T-Frank discuss.Next up is a question about Penn State's current weight lifting situation with the main lifting area under renovation. Is it hindering development? After that, several listeners want to know just how soon and how effective Penn State's three five-star players can be in their first year on campus. From there, they discuss the portal, pears, dad jeans, and recruiting.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 166BWI Daily: Top 5 Offseason question without answers

We're deep into the offseason for Penn State football, and there are some things we're not going to find out yet, if ever. That's what host Thomas Frank Carr has been thinking about and what he shares with you on the BWI Daily Edition. What will Penn State football look like next season with an offseason of changes behind them and more ahead? T-Frank has put together a list of five questions he wishes he had the truth about right now regarding the Penn State football team. He starts at five and asks a question that he's posed many times on the show. How will Manny Diaz alter the Penn State defense? We know that head coach James Franklin went out to find a coach who runs a similar scheme, but subtle differences can change quite a bit. So he gets into some of his questions about how Diaz could put his stamp on Penn State's defense. The next question deals with the hottest topic for Penn State fans; quarterback. No, not incoming freshmen Drew Allar or Beau Pribula. He looks squarely at redshirt freshman Christian Veilleux and wonders one particular question. Third, on the list of questions, he wants answers about the health of two key players. Penn State's roster projections hinge on one defensive and one offensive lineman. Becuase Penn State doesn't divulge injury information, all timelines about a return to play are conjecture. The second most important question that T-Frank would like answered is one he wants to know the most. How does the Nittany Lions staff feel about one of their starters from last season? Knowing their honest evaluation would give insight into how Penn State wants to build its line and how things could shake out next year. Finally, the most critical question to which nobody knows the answer comes from the transfer portal. Will Penn State get more additions this spring? What positions will they play? Even the Nittany Lions staff don't know the answer, but it's the most critical factor in how next season will go. Ep 165BWI Daily: Roster churn, Sutherland at LB and hoops

Penn State football is still finding ways to add players during the winter season, but things have finally settled on the roster churn from the end of 2021. Senior Editor Nate Bauer took a look at what transpired and the multiple layers of complexity to it. Bauer joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about what he wrote and how Penn State chose to navigate the COVID exemptions for seniors and super seniors this past year. With four different groups of seniors making decisions about their status with the team, The need for practicality and organization was critical. So how did head coach James Franklin navigate this? Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr look at the players that stayed and left to find the clues. Next, they discuss a minor addition to the program, walk-on receiver Jake Spencer. The former Colgate wideout spent two seasons with his former program and now joins Penn State for the 2022 season. T-Frank took a quick look at his bio and his high school tape to get a sense of where he’ll help Penn State as a depth player and what skills made him a target as a walk-on. After that, they take a look at Penn State’s linebacker situation for next season. Franklin made news at the bowl game when he said that safety Jonathan Sutherland would be playing linebacker in the game and going forward. After initially rejecting the idea, T-Frank has come around on the notion of the sixth-year defender moving closer to the line of scrimmage. He does have some caveats, though. T-Frank talks Bauer through how defenses can use personnel and how Sutherland fits into that picture. Finally, they wrap up discussing Penn State basketball’s frustrating slog through January. They’ve lost two after starting the month 2-2, with a canceled game in between. How much did losing that game hurt? Bauer highlights that, explains what happened in the Nittany Lions’ loss to Iowa and how the team needs to play to win games. Ep 163BWI Daily: Junior Day Update, Wrestling with Greg Pickel

Penn State hosted various players over the weekend during its second junior day. Several interesting names were on hand despite lacking a depth of high-end recruits showing up on campus. With that in mind, Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated joins the Daily Edition to discuss those that stood out. They start with one of the most important names of the weekend, Cornell offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad. While he's not a prospect in the traditional sense, Penn State is recruiting him hard out of the transfer portal. He visited the Nittany Lions this weekend, and Pickel has his thoughts on the situation. The next player that stood out to Pickel was Georiga native Dee Crayton. Pickel shares some of what the four-star linebacker prospect had to say after his visit. Crayton was impressed by several aspects of the weekend, which should bode well for Penn State. Pickel then points out an interesting part of Crayton's recruitment that will be worth monitoring going forward. The next topic they discuss deals with recruiting, but not junior day. Four-star offensive lineman Jven Williams updated his recruitment, which Pickel details on the show. They also talk about his importance to the in-state recruiting effort and where Penn State might stand in Williams' pecking order of schools. They also explain how On3's RPM, or Recruiting Prediction Machine, works and why the Nittany Lions are a favorite right now. Finally, there are key events that fans should know about that shape the recruiting process, which are a factor in the prediction. The final piece of recruiting news they discuss is Dani Dennis-Sutton's ranking for On3. On3's recruiting expert Charles Power gave Dennis-Sutton his fifth star this week, making it three for Penn State in the Class of 2023. Pickel and T-Frank discuss Dennis-Sutton's senior year and some of the factors that led to his late rise up the rankings. Finally, Pickel fills T-Frank in on the Penn State wrestling team's exploits over the weekend. The Nittany Lions dominated third-ranked Michigan and then took care of business against Michigan State on Sunday, sweeping their road schedule this past weekend. Who stood out? Why did Penn State handle Michigan in such a fashion? First, they discuss those topics and then comment on how dangerous head coach Cael Sanderson's squad is after the intermission. Next, they discuss some critical moments of the weekend and then look at the team with a big-picture view. Lastly, Pickel gives fans a heads up on what's coming up from the team and him this week. Ep 160BWI Daily: Winter workouts, Senior Bowl and Nick Singleton

Penn State football started winter workouts this week, and several players are already drawing praise for their performance. Host Thoma Frank Carr and senior Editor for Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer, discuss that and more on the show. They start by discussing praise from new strength and conditioning coordinator Chuck Losey for Clifford’s work during the speed session of winter workouts. Losey mentioned Clifford’s training app and how the sixth-year senior is performing at a standout level in a Tweet from earlier in the week. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the merits of this praise and how it may seem familiar to Penn State fans. However, they also explain why it’s still valid and essential. After that, T-Frank explains why it also makes an uphill task for the young quarterbacks to unseat Clifford as the starter. From there, they discuss Penn State running back Nick Singleton’s newest award and how his presence along with the development of some other young offensive players could infuse hope in fans for next season. Does Bauer agree? T-Frank singles out two players that can change the trajectory of the Penn State running game for their unique skills.Next, they discuss a social media post from sports personality Taylor Rooks. Rooks commented on Rams receiver Odell Beckham Jr. earlier this week, which resonated with Penn State football players.Does situation determine everything in football? The guys debate the merits of her comments and then give examples of both positive and negative situations that affected Penn State players last season. T-Fank cautions about applying this thought liberally to football for an important reason. Finally, they look at the players that are participants in the 2022 Senior Bowl as of recording. While more are still expected to come, T-Frank and Nate discuss which players have the most to gain from their participation in the week of practices, culminating in the Senior Bowl game on February 5th.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 159BWI Daily: How Penn State's passing game can be better next year

Rosters constantly churn in college football, but this week, we have a better idea of what Penn State football will look like next fall. With that in mind, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, thinks that Penn State's passing attack can be different and better in 2022. Transfer Mitchell Tinsley changes aspects of the Nittany Lion passing attack that can alter how they generate explosive plays. Before that, T-Frank sets the scene by talking about the Penn State offensive line. With the significant change up front comes considerable uncertainty. He addresses what that future could look like and uses a recent memory to remind fans that things don't always work out the way you expect. He does this to temper expectations both ways about how that unit will perform next season.Secondarily, he reminds viewers of Sean Clifford's playing style. Unfortunately, Clifford's abilities aren't the perfect fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich wants to win. Still, the sixth-year quarterback had operated the offense effectively before injuries marred the second half of last year.T-Frank thinks the skill players Penn State has amassed with that in mind. he thinks they can win differently from last year's group, which can take the pressure off of Clifford while still generating big plays through the passing game. First, T-Frank explains how broken tackles by receivers have different values depending on where and how they happen and then shows Penn State's productivity from last season. After that, he shows how Tinsley fits into the picture. His skills differ from former receiver Jahan Dotson, and his playstyle could potentially fit better with Clifford. With a few tweaks to receiver Parker Washington's usage and improved play from the tight ends, Penn State's passing attack has a chance to be dangerous next season.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 158BWI Daily: Clarity on Penn State roster after spring update

Penn State football gave clarity to their roster a week after starting the spring semester. Sixteen players left the roster as of Monday, and while there were no shocking subtractions, they do leave an impact in their absence. That's what host Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer of Blue White illustrated discuss today on the show. They start with a player who had a frustrating end to a solid career in center Mike Miranda. While some fans may be happy to see the end of Mirdana after struggling last season, Bauer notes that he did leave an impact by his play and presence on the field for Penn State. T-Frank explains how the once-promising interior lineman found himself consistently performing under expectations in his final season. He notes that while Miranda didn't change as a player, the cast around him and his position switch hampered his production. From there, they discuss another name that is more curious than anything in cornerback AJ Lytton. The former Florida State corner came to Penn State late in the transfer process and never found a defense home. But, according to T-Frank, unlike Miranda, Lytton leaves an imprint on Penn State for not playing.Next, they move on to examine the career of receiver Cam Sullivan-Brown. First, Bauer chronicles Sullivan-Brown's snake bit time at Penn State and how he was seemingly just a step away from being a factor for the Nittany Lions offense. After that, T-Frank uses Sullivan-Brown as a cautionary tale for listening to one particular type of quote coming from coaches during the pre-season. Then, he uses that lesson to share his feelings about certain players for next year. They discuss a similar story with defensive tackle Fred Hansard and his unfortunate run at Penn State, marred by injury. This discussion leads them to a larger one about the reality of college football and the hard truths that it presents. From there, they wrap up focusing on the program's future and what Penn State fans can learn from these stories.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 157Recruiting Pod: Junior day recap & contact period resumes

Penn State hosted its first January junior day in two years this past weekend. The visit list was stacked with talent, with 10 four-star players making the trip and a little under 20 scholarship players total.Although it didn't lead to any immediate commitments, James Franklin and his Penn State assistants hosted a handful of players who are clearly leaning in PSU's direction. That could prove to be fruitful once spring rolls around and players are able to see their other options. On today's Blue White Illustrated recruiting podcast, Ryan Snyder and Greg Pickel look back on Saturday's junior day, highlighting a handful of players that fans need to know moving forward. Offensive offensive tackle prospects Evan Link, from Washington, D.C., and Samson Okunlola, from Brockton, Mass., are among a few they discuss at length. The transfer portal also remains a popular topic, and Penn State stopped in to see two of their top targets Monday. Vanderbilt tackle Tyler Steen and Cornell guard Hunter Nourzad both won't enroll at their next school until the summer, but Penn State put on a full-court press Monday. The guys get into the details on both players, as well the plan for the portal moving forward. They wrap up today's podcast discussing the resumption of the contact period, which began this past Friday, Jan. 14. Franklin and his assistant will be out on the road these next two weeks to meet with players and coaches up and down the East Coast. Ryan gets into a few of the expected stops for Tuesday, which includes a handful of quarterback prospects that offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich has interest in.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 156BWI Daily: Junior day reaction, wrestling update with Greg Pickel

Penn State football's first Junior Day was Saturday in Happy Valley. Hours before the first snowstorm of the season hit the region, head coach James Franklin and his staff hosted dozens of potential commits for The Class of 2023 and beyond. As recruiting insider for Blue White Illustrated Ryan Snyder mentioned last week, the goal is to formally introduce recruits to Penn State and give them the essentials of the program. How did they do at that? What are the biggest takeaways from this past weekend? Reporter Greg Pickel was following the developments this weekend and joined the BWI Daily Edition to give his impressions of Junior Day and give Penn State fans the essentials of what happened over the weekend. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, starts by asking Pickel his most significant takeaways from the weekend and his general impressions of what fans should know. Next, they took a look at two players making their way up from Florida, defensive linemen Derrick LeBalanc and John Walker. LeBlanc and Walker are teammates at Osceola high school and were up this weekend to take in the event. While both are important recruits, they each represent something interesting. First, they start with LeBlanc, who had an interesting comment from the weekend that T-Frank thinks is revealing. That leads them to a conversation about Franklin's personality as a coach and the potential disconnect between Penn State fans and their head coach despite commonalities. LeBlanc's comments also lead to a conversation bout name, image, and likeness and Penn State's current progress in that department. Next, they discuss what Walker represents as a prospect. Ep 154BWI Daily: Junior day visitor preview, new offer goes out in the Class of 2022

Penn State football is exiting a dead period in recruiting, and how has the month of January to host recruits and make visits. With the first junior day on January 15th, Penn State recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to give viewers a breakdown of what to expect this weekend and for the rest of the month.Host Thomas Frank Carr starts with the basics for those unfamiliar with recruiting and how the calendar works. First, he asks Snyder what Junior Days are, how they work, and their benefit. How important are they? They discuss the evolution of this process over time and how the term "Junior Day" doesn't exactly fit with the modern weekend process.Next, they discuss how Penn State's attendee list has developed and compares it to previous years. With 2020 shutting down all recruiting visits last season, Snyder gives a broader view than just the immediate past. After that, he lets fans know some of the important names coming to Happy Valley this weekend. This list for this weekend isn't the only time that Penn State will have recruits on campus. Snyder explains how many Junior Day weekends there are in the month and just how many players will come through campus in January. Finally, he gives examples of players that have committed during the event to give fans an idea of what might happen this month. Even if it's unlikely, it never hurts to be prepared. After wrapping up their conversation about recruiting for the Class of 2022, T-Frank and Snyder discuss a piece of news that came out yesterday relating to the class of 2022. The traditional recruiting deadline is over the horizon, and Penn State has sent a new offer to 2022 offensive lineman Vega Ioane. The pair share what they know about the four-star recruit from Washington and then put his offer into perspective. They both agree that this might signal that Penn State is shifting plans from a critical area of talent acquisition this offseason.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
