Ep 83BWI Daily: Post-Practice Observations and Iowa Keys to Victory
Senior Editor of Blue White Illustrated Nate Bauer joins host Thomas Frank Carr as they discuss their observations on what they saw at Penn State's open practice Wednesday evening. T-Frank asks Nate what he saw spending time watching defensive coordinator Brent Pry's portion of practice along with the other defensive coaches, while T-Frank gives his impressions of the receivers and quarterbacks working on very technical parts of the passing game. Nate also details his observations of Sean Clifford this week and how he feels the senior quarterback is conducting himself heading into the game against Iowa. From there they discuss what James Franklin had to say after practice and what was discussed. It includes: How the Iowa offensive output doesn't tell the whole story of the Hawkeyes offense, but how it does lead into an interesting discussion about how they've played outside of turnover-shortened fields this season. They get into some specifics of what they found while digging into the information about how efficient their offense has been. T-Frank and Nate also discuss the importance of Jordan Stout and how he's changed James Franklin's decision making on fourth down this season. Finally they wrap up practice observations by talking about Penn State's talented safety tandem and how Penn State's focus on getting turnovers has finally paid off after several years. Then they take questions from fans submitted either on Twitter, or the Blue White Illustrated message board and get into some game-specific matchups and keys to how Penn State will need to attack and defend Iowa. #PennState #NittanyLions SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: http://bluewhiteillustrated.com/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://bluewhiteillustrated.podbean.com/ Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/BWIonRivals Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 79BWI Live: Recapping Indiana, Previewing Iowa
The BWI Staff is back to give you their Monday recap of Penn State's 24-0 win over Indiana on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Host Thomas Frank Carr, Senior Editor Nate Bauer and Writer Dave Eckert talk about the game that was, as well as give their initial thoughts on the top 5 showdown at Kinnick Stadium next Saturday. First, they start with their general impressions of the game as well and then shift their focus to the defensive side of the ball. They discuss how much you can take away from shutting out an Indiana team that was clearly outmatched and was not able to move the ball against the Penn State defense. From there they discuss the Penn State secondary and their performance through the first five games of the season. Are they elite? Or have they faced bad quarterbacks on ranked teams? Nate and T-Frank discuss the nuance to that conversation while Dave gives his perspective on the players outside of star safety Jaquan Brisker. After that they take a look at the Penn State offense and have a similar conversation about Sean Clifford against Indiana's complex defense. Who gets more credit (or blame) for the senior quarterbacks least efficient passing performance of the season. T-Frank gives his opinion on just how tough Head Coach Tom Allen's defense can be on a quarterback. They also take questions from the audience about the game coming up on Saturday and how the staff feels that Penn State will fare facing an Iowa team that has been getting turnovers in bunches. Dave points out that Iowa isn't the only defense that has been doing so this year and Penn State fans should consider the idea that the Nittany Lions make be the team that dictates the flow of the game. Finally they give their closing thoughts and what they're looking at heading into the week. Ep 78BWI Daily: Where Sean Clifford Has Improved The Most Since 2019
The quarterback is always the center of attention for a successful football team and at 5-0, Penn State QB Sean Clifford is drawing plenty of attention. After a 24-0 win over the Indiana Hoosiers, BWI Live host Thomas Frank Carr goes into detail about where Clifford has improved from 2019 to today. T-Frank explains which areas Clifford has taken the biggest strides in and how Mike Yurcich is operating his offense as opposed to how Ricky Rahne did in 2019. Some of the areas that T-Frank highlights today include: - Play under pressure and from a clean pocket - Play action passing - Deep Passing efficiency T-Frank also revisits his comparison of Sam Ehlinger's 2020 season in his first year under Yurcich to what Clifford has done through five games in 2021. Ep 75BWI Daily: Indiana Football Preview with Dustin Dopirak of Indy Star
BWI Daily host Thomas Frank Carr interviews Indiana beat writer Dustin Dopirak of the Indy Star and the Bloomington Herald-Times to find out more about what's going on with the Indiana football team. The Hoosiers are 2-2 so far this season with losses to two ranked teams in Iowa and Cincinnati. Dustin starts by taking T-Frank through the ups and downs of quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s recovery from his third knee injury and second ACL tear in his right knee. He says that the injury itself didn't seem to be the issue early, but something else. Dustin also explains the story behind all of Penix Jr.'s interceptions to start the season and why head coach Tom Allen has stuck by the senior despite his struggles. The pair also discuss how the Indiana offensive line has been dealing with its own injuries and how that has affected Penix Jr. and his ability to play his style of football early in the season. The offensive line, Dustin says, plays well enough to get the job done on the ground and through the air but won't blow anyone away. They also discuss what transfer running back Stephen Carr brings to the table and what he's been missing in his game so far this season. That leads into a discussion about the receivers and skill positions that Dustin says are embattled through the first part of the year, not only due to injuries to key players but also the rocky road that tight end Peyton Hendershot has been walking for the last year. From there, the two switch their attention to the defense and the front seven, which is not a bad unit, but like the offensive line, may be more a sum of their parts than individual stars. The one star Dustin does point out is middle linebacker Micah McFadden, and explains how his absence from a game this season changed the course of the competition and how much he means to the defense. The Indiana defense has been injury-riddled, like the skill positions and Dustin takes T-Frank through the list of players that won't play or may not play on Saturday and how that matchup will go beyond just Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson and cornerback Tiawan Mullen. He discusses the players that stand out, and what Indiana has been missing so far this season from that group. Finally, he gives his impressions of Penn State and what he expects the key matchups to be on Saturday. Ep 74BWI Daily: Is Penn State‘s No. 4 Ranking a Distraction Moving Forward?
Penn State is 4-0 heading into a showdown with 2-2 Indiana on Saturday, but despite that, head coach James Franklin struck a serious tone on Tuesday during his weekly press conference. Blue White Illustrated's Nate Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr get into not just what Franklin said, but his tone and demeanor since his post-game comments and it means for the team this week. Is winning and being ranked fourth in the nation is a good thing or a bad thing for the program this early in the season? After T-Frank gets into the more intricate details about the run game and the issues that the team has faced so far, he gives a quick overview of the film he's watched on Indiana. He and Nate discuss how defensive coordinator Brent Pry could choose to attack IU's struggling offense . They wrap up with a conversation about Sean Clifford's future and what he might do once the season is over. Ep 62BWI Daily: Is the Penn State Secondary Elite?
The #PennState #NittanyLions are 3-0 and have defeated two top 25 football teams to get there. The team sits at 6th in the nation and is poised to be a contender in 2021 thanks to stellar play from several key areas. The clear strength of the team, according to host Thomas Frank Carr, is the secondary. Robby then gives his thoughts on if he thinks the team is worthy of a AP Top 25 ranking, as they have received votes so far this season. They discuss third-year starting quarterback Drew Plitt and his progression and game as a starter for the Cardinals as well as his on-field chemistry with star receiver Justin Hall. From there they take a look at the other offensive weapons other than Hall and then discuss the offensive line, which is a veteran group. They also discuss the important of slot safety Bryce Crosby as well as the other veterans in that group. T-Frank was particularly impressed with cornerback Nic Jones and asks General what is role is in the defense seeing as he is not the starter, but is a productive player on the defense. They wrap up with a discussion of the front-seven and their unique approach to the defensive line, where they only play three down linemen and rotate at a high level. T-Frank asks General if he thinks that the team can continue to do that this week against Penn State's no huddle attack and if the Ball State defense can frustrate the PSU attack enough to keep the game close. Ep 47BWI Daily: Three Side Stories from Penn State‘s Win Over Wisconsin
Host Thomas Frank Carr takes you through three quick notes about the Penn State's win over Wisconsin that are interesting to note going forward, but had less impact on the game because the Nittany Lions got a win over Wisconsin on Saturday. He starts with the running back rotation and comments on how James Franklin and company used their deep stable of backs in a game where the offense was looking for a spark early. Ep 45BWI Daily: PFF‘s Anthony Treash on Penn State vs. Wisconsin
Penn State will face the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison this Saturday and BWI Daily Host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at that game and the season with PFF's Senior College Analyst, Anthony Treash. The two start out by discussing Graham Mertz, the young and potentially promising quarterback for Wisconsin. Is he the guy from week 1 of 2020? Or the player who struggled the rest of the season. Anthony gives his take on whether or not Mertz is "the guy". Conversely, Treash has a very defined and strong opinion on who Sean Clifford is as a passer and what he can be in 2021. Treash gets into why he's low on the Nittany Lion's third year starter. They also discuss Mike Yurcich and how his offense is not a great fit for Clifford based on the data. Then they shift to talking about the young Penn State offensive line and how those players have the recruiting profile, but don't have the reps on film yet to prove that they are ready to protect their QB. Treash then gets into the front seven of the Wisconsin defense and the players he's going to be watching on Saturday. With all of the points laid out in the Wisconsin game, Treash gives his season prediction for what he thinks the Nittany Lions are in store for this season. Ep 41BWI Daily: Penn State - Wisconsin Preview with Greg Pickel
Penn State travels to Wisconsin for one of the toughest openers in school history when they face the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated give you an early preview of Wisconsin and what to expect from the Badgers. They start by taking a look at the 2020 season for Wisconsin, which was tumultuous and rocky because of COVID 19, with multiple missed weeks and cancelled games. Sandwiched between several good wins, were some rough losses that T-Frank points out as to why you might want to think twice about having the Badgers as the runaway favorite. Ep 35BWI Daily: Confidence Factor (Pt. 1)
Host Thomas Frank Carr has taken you through the Penn State training camp on the Daily Edition and now he gives you his assessment of the roster by position. He starts with the quarterback position and tries to paint a picture of what starting quarterback Sean Clifford can be in 2021 by looking at what he has been the in the past. Then he gives you how confident he is that that can become a reality. Next he examines the skill positions starting the with deep and talented tailback group. Can they break out and lead the team? Is there a star in the group? All of that is involved in his confidence in the position. The exact opposite is true of the receiver position, with top-heavy talents but questions marks at every other part of the depth chart. Can Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington carry the team? The tight ends are a talented group, but can they match that potential? Once again, the offensive line is talented, but the tackle position does carry some question marks outside of left tackle Rasheed Walker. The interior is the biggest mystery on the entire team. Next he switches to the defense and looks at the defensive end position and how it might be the shakiest part of the entire team. The defensive tackles next to them are next. How do those two units work together? The linebackers are next and potential breakout players are backed up by huge questions marks. The secondary rounds out the day starting at corner and heading to safety before T-Frank gets to the most underrated position on the team, slot defender.
