Senior Editor of Blue White Illustrated Nate Bauer joins host Thomas Frank Carr as they discuss their observations on what they saw at Penn State's open practice Wednesday evening. T-Frank asks Nate what he saw spending time watching defensive coordinator Brent Pry's portion of practice along with the other defensive coaches, while T-Frank gives his impressions of the receivers and quarterbacks working on very technical parts of the passing game. The BWI Staff is back to give you their Monday recap of Penn State's 24-0 win over Indiana on Saturday at Beaver Stadium. BWI Daily host Thomas Frank Carr interviews Indiana beat writer Dustin Dopirak of the Indy Star and the Bloomington Herald-Times to find out more about what's going on with the Indiana football team. The Hoosiers are 2-2 so far this season with losses to two ranked teams in Iowa and Cincinnati. Dustin starts by taking T-Frank through the ups and downs of quarterback Michael Penix Jr.'s recovery from his third knee injury and second ACL tear in his right knee. He says that the injury itself didn't seem to be the issue early, but something else. Dustin also explains the story behind all of Penix Jr.'s interceptions to start the season and why head coach Tom Allen has stuck by the senior despite his struggles. The pair also discuss how the Indiana offensive line has been dealing with its own injuries and how that has affected Penix Jr. and his ability to play his style of football early in the season. The offensive line, Dustin says, plays well enough to get the job done on the ground and through the air but won't blow anyone away. They also discuss what transfer running back Stephen Carr brings to the table and what he's been missing in his game so far this season. That leads into a discussion about the receivers and skill positions that Dustin says are embattled through the first part of the year, not only due to injuries to key players but also the rocky road that tight end Peyton Hendershot has been walking for the last year. From there, the two switch their attention to the defense and the front seven, which is not a bad unit, but like the offensive line, may be more a sum of their parts than individual stars. The one star Dustin does point out is middle linebacker Micah McFadden, and explains how his absence from a game this season changed the course of the competition and how much he means to the defense. The Indiana defense has been injury-riddled, like the skill positions and Dustin takes T-Frank through the list of players that won't play or may not play on Saturday and how that matchup will go beyond just Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson and cornerback Tiawan Mullen. He discusses the players that stand out, and what Indiana has been missing so far this season from that group. Finally, he gives his impressions of Penn State and what he expects the key matchups to be on Saturday. The Penn State Nittany Lions welcome The #BallState Cardinals to a nearly sold out Beaver Stadium on Saturday and host Thomas Frank Carr has your scouting report with from The Star Press, Robby General. Robby gives his thoughts on Ball State and what type of team they return this year after a 7-1 season that included a bowl win, AP ranking, and MAC Championship in 2020. T-Frank and Robby begin with last week's win over Western Illinois for Ball State and T-Frank asks Robby to explain why despite a 31 point performance, he didn't think that Ball State played their best game. Robby then gives his thoughts on if he thinks the team is worthy of a AP Top 25 ranking, as they have received votes so far this season. They discuss third-year starting quarterback Drew Plitt and his progression and game as a starter for the Cardinals as well as his on-field chemistry with star receiver Justin Hall. From there they take a look at the other offensive weapons other than Hall and then discuss the offensive line, which is a veteran group. T-Frank notes that he thinks the secondary is the strength of the Ball State Defense under Head Coach Mike Neu and Robby gives his impressions of a group that is playing well together. They also discuss the important of slot safety Bryce Crosby as well as the other veterans in that group. T-Frank was particularly impressed with cornerback Nic Jones and asks General what is role is in the defense seeing as he is not the starter, but is a productive player on the defense. Penn State will face the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison this Saturday and BWI Daily Host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at that game and the season with PFF's Senior College Analyst, Anthony Treash. The two start out by discussing Graham Mertz, the young and potentially promising quarterback for Wisconsin. Is he the guy from week 1 of 2020? Or the player who struggled the rest of the season. Anthony gives his take on whether or not Mertz is "the guy". Conversely, Treash has a very defined and strong opinion on who Sean Clifford is as a passer and what he can be in 2021. Treash gets into why he's low on the Nittany Lion's third year starter. They also discuss Mike Yurcich and how his offense is not a great fit for Clifford based on the data. Then they shift to talking about the young Penn State offensive line and how those players have the recruiting profile, but don't have the reps on film yet to prove that they are ready to protect their QB. Treash then gets into the front seven of the Wisconsin defense and the players he's going to be watching on Saturday. Penn State will face Wisconsin on Saturday at noon eastern, so we caught up with Badgers Blitz Insider Jake Kocorowski to get an in-depth preview of the Nittany Lion's first opponent of the season. Penn State travels to Wisconsin for one of the toughest openers in school history when they face the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium. The quest for players is never done and the Penn State's football program has quite the list of offers out to talent around the state and region for the upcoming recruiting classes. Rivals recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins joins host and prospect analyst Thomas Frank Carr to tell you which games to pay attention to this weekend. They start in Harrisburg with a clash of La Salle College High School and Bishop McDevitt to see commit for the class of 2022, Linebacker Abdul Carter face off against a trio of prospects for future classes. From there he takes us to Central Dauphin East vs Manheim Township to see two Penn State commits in the class of 2022 square off in the secondary at receiver and safety. The final in-state game he highlights is Imhotep Charter vs Pittsburgh Central Catholic which has a laundry list of commits and prospects to pay attention to. They also discuss Ryan's article from earlier this week breaking down recruiting classes by Average Points Per Player instead of some of the other metrics that value quantity over quality. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor of Blue White Illustrated Nate Bauer give an update on their observations from Penn State's training camp. The Lions held their final open practice of training camp before game week and they give their final observations about key positions, battles and players as the team is separated into the two-deep. T-Frank starts by asking Nate what starting safety Jaquan Brisker said to him as practice interviews wrapped up that was both interesting, and noteworthy. They discuss what Brisker said about his quarterback Sean Clifford and if they think he's accurate. T-Frank adds some information to that topic by telling you what starting tight end Brenton Strange said about one of the receivers who has stepped up this camp to take a bigger role in the offense. Then they discuss the offensive line situation and how James Franklin left one key position battle very much open heading out of camp and into the regular season. T-Frank gives you a couple of 'looks like' observations from camp of players who have stuck out both good and bad in the brief views of practice they've had. Host Thomas Frank Carr has taken you through the Penn State training camp on the Daily Edition and now he gives you his assessment of the roster by position. He starts with the quarterback position and tries to paint a picture of what starting quarterback Sean Clifford can be in 2021 by looking at what he has been the in the past. Then he gives you how confident he is that that can become a reality. Next he examines the skill positions starting the with deep and talented tailback group. Can they break out and lead the team? Is there a star in the group? All of that is involved in his confidence in the position. The exact opposite is true of the receiver position, with top-heavy talents but questions marks at every other part of the depth chart. Can Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington carry the team? The tight ends are a talented group, but can they match that potential? Once again, the offensive line is talented, but the tackle position does carry some question marks outside of left tackle Rasheed Walker. The interior is the biggest mystery on the entire team. Next he switches to the defense and looks at the defensive end position and how it might be the shakiest part of the entire team. The defensive tackles next to them are next. How do those two units work together? The linebackers are next and potential breakout players are backed up by huge questions marks. The secondary rounds out the day starting at corner and heading to safety before T-Frank gets to the most underrated position on the team, slot defender.
