Ep 48BWI Daily: Ball State & AP Rankings
Host Thomas Frank Carr and Blue White Illustrated staff writer Dave Eckert take a look at Week 2 for the Penn State football program. They start by discussing where they believe that Penn State will rank in the newest national polls this week and why that matters to the team both internally and from a perception standpoint. Then they discuss areas that they think Penn State should focus on heading into their game with Ball State and how they think the team can improve from week 1 to week 2. Dave gets specific about where exactly on the squad he wants to see a step forward, while T-Frank gives you a concept he'd like to see get better. Then they discuss Ball State and what this team brings to the table heading into Beaver Stadium on Saturday. T-Frank did some advanced scouting on Ball State and gives a quick overview of the key players on offense and which positional groups are the best on that side of the ball. He also gives his impression of Drew Plitt, Ball State's quarterback. Then they discuss the opposite side of the ball and if the Penn State offense will focus on the air or ground attack against a tough, disciplined unit that files to the football. T-Frank also gives you a player to watch on that side of the ball that stood out to him while watching film. Ep 47BWI Daily: Three Side Stories from Penn State‘s Win Over Wisconsin
Host Thomas Frank Carr takes you through three quick notes about the Penn State's win over Wisconsin that are interesting to note going forward, but had less impact on the game because the Nittany Lions got a win over Wisconsin on Saturday. He starts with the running back rotation and comments on how James Franklin and company used their deep stable of backs in a game where the offense was looking for a spark early. T-Frank then notes that there was one particularly quiet group of playmakers on the football field for Penn State that didn't make the impact we were all expecting them to. Finally he looks at one key player on defense that we learned the most about on Saturday. Ep 45BWI Daily: PFF‘s Anthony Treash on Penn State vs. Wisconsin
Penn State will face the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison this Saturday and BWI Daily Host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look at that game and the season with PFF's Senior College Analyst, Anthony Treash. The two start out by discussing Graham Mertz, the young and potentially promising quarterback for Wisconsin. Is he the guy from week 1 of 2020? Or the player who struggled the rest of the season. Anthony gives his take on whether or not Mertz is "the guy". Conversely, Treash has a very defined and strong opinion on who Sean Clifford is as a passer and what he can be in 2021. Treash gets into why he's low on the Nittany Lion's third year starter. They also discuss Mike Yurcich and how his offense is not a great fit for Clifford based on the data. Then they shift to talking about the young Penn State offensive line and how those players have the recruiting profile, but don't have the reps on film yet to prove that they are ready to protect their QB. Treash then gets into the front seven of the Wisconsin defense and the players he's going to be watching on Saturday. With all of the points laid out in the Wisconsin game, Treash gives his season prediction for what he thinks the Nittany Lions are in store for this season. They wrap up by discussing some non-Penn State teams and players with Anthony's bold predictions for 2021. Ep 41BWI Daily: Penn State - Wisconsin Preview with Greg Pickel
Penn State travels to Wisconsin for one of the toughest openers in school history when they face the Wisconsin Badgers at Camp Randall Stadium. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated give you an early preview of Wisconsin and what to expect from the Badgers. They discuss Graham Mertz, the passing attack and how Wisconsin has changed several things in their arsenal since the last time the two teams met in 2018. The final in-state game he highlights is Imhotep Charter vs Pittsburgh Central Catholic which has a laundry list of commits and prospects to pay attention to. They also discuss Ryan's article from earlier this week breaking down recruiting classes by Average Points Per Player instead of some of the other metrics that value quantity over quality. Ryan and T-Frank also discuss the players they're most eager to get senior season film from for the class of 2022, as many of them had their seasons last year disrupted by COVID. Ryan finishes his chat with T-Frank by giving a list of interesting games outside of the region to pay attention to, focusing on several key prospects in 2022 that live in Ohio. Then they discuss the offensive line situation and how James Franklin left one key position battle very much open heading out of camp and into the regular season. Bauer gives his insight into what he's seen and how murky the picture still is at left guard. T-Frank gives you a couple of 'looks like' observations from camp of players who have stuck out both good and bad in the brief views of practice they've had. T-Frank and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss each positional group and how confident Nate is that that position group will play up to their level of expectation. Here is T-Frank's chart for what each number means. CONFIDENCE FACTOR CHART 50 or Below: Barely holding their own on the field to actively hurting the team 60-69: A position with some good plays and players but most a support member of the team. 70-79: A group that can produce an mid-tier All-Big 10 candidate 80-89: A group with a surefire All-Big 10 selection and most likely a first-team conference player with the production to match. 90+: All-American Consideration, national awards candidate. Ep 35BWI Daily: Confidence Factor (Pt. 1)
Host Thomas Frank Carr has taken you through the Penn State training camp on the Daily Edition and now he gives you his assessment of the roster by position. He starts with the quarterback position and tries to paint a picture of what starting quarterback Sean Clifford can be in 2021 by looking at what he has been the in the past. Then he gives you how confident he is that that can become a reality. Next he examines the skill positions starting the with deep and talented tailback group. Can they break out and lead the team? Is there a star in the group? All of that is involved in his confidence in the position. The exact opposite is true of the receiver position, with top-heavy talents but questions marks at every other part of the depth chart. Can Jahan Dotson and Parker Washington carry the team? The tight ends are a talented group, but can they match that potential? Once again, the offensive line is talented, but the tackle position does carry some question marks outside of left tackle Rasheed Walker. The interior is the biggest mystery on the entire team. Next he switches to the defense and looks at the defensive end position and how it might be the shakiest part of the entire team. The defensive tackles next to them are next. How do those two units work together? The linebackers are next and potential breakout players are backed up by huge questions marks. The secondary rounds out the day starting at corner and heading to safety before T-Frank gets to the most underrated position on the team, slot defender. Host Thomas Frank Carr and Greg Pickel take you through what was said and observed through the first two weeks of practice at Penn State's fall training camp. They also tell you why they think he's the lead candidate to start opposite of Arnold Ebiketie on the Penn State defensive line. Next, they discuss why we've heard so much about Smith Vilbert this spring and summer. Is he really becoming the player his recruiting profile said he could be? They continue down the depth chart of the Penn State defensive end position to discuss the biggest enigma of the defense, Jesse Luketa. Is he a linebacker or a defensive end? Which should he be? T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts. Finally, Greg gives his final impressions on what is left to learn through training camp at some key positions.
