News and rumors are already swirling around the Penn State football program in their first week this offseason. The Penn State coaching staff is out on the road recruiting for the next week and a half in a critical junction of the Class of 2022. On top of that, head coach James Franklin is also trying to navigate the competitive world of assistant coach hiring. After defensive coordinator Brent Pry left earlier this week to assume the head coach role at Virginia Tech, Franklin has presumably been hard at work finding his replacement. Bauer emphasizes that there is no firm news coming from the Lasch building on the state of the coaching search. Still, he joins the show to share what he’s found when researching possible candidates to replace Pry. The complete list is also available in his article from earlier in the week, but he and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the most intriguing names he found. They also discuss the machinations behind the scenes to secure a new coordinator. One name of particular interest to T-Frank is co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Anthony Poindexter. Poindexter is a potential in-house candidate to replace Pry and a possible replacement for Virginia head coach Bronco Mendenhall. The transfer portal has already heated up for the 2021-2022 offseason, with hundreds of football players entering their name, looking for a new home. So with all of that information, how can you know which players are essential? Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, sifted through the names and positions and came up with a list of players that he thinks are good players and fit Penn State.He starts by first giving you his observations of the type of players that Penn State has recruited in the transfer portal. They've broken down into two groups of players with a common thread of a valid reason to leave their old program but different age and recruitment profiles otherwise. He also cautions that Penn State has only been active in the portal for one year, so the information about how Penn State operates is a minimal sample size.Despite that, it's the best information at hand. It's also what the flashlight T-Frank used when plumbing the depths of the portal for players he thinks are both good at football and fit for Penn State. His list breaks into two groups, players that are good but don't quite fit for one reason or another and good fits that he's keeping an eye on.The first list includes former Duke wide receiver, Jake Bobo. T-Frank thinks Bobo is a good football player and would fit Penn State well from his portal criteria and a cultural perspective. Still, some problems keep him from being a perfect fit. T-Frank explains and gets into his thoughts about the receiver position going forward.The next player is former FIU left tackle MIles Frazier. Frazier started one year for the Golden Panthers before entering his name in the portal. He doesn't fit some of the critical criteria from Penn State's previous portal activity. Still, T-Frank thinks Frazier is a good football player that will be productive in the future. He's also good at one essential facet of football that Penn State lacks.His following list of players fit all of the criteria in his search parameters and are good players. First, he mentions a former four-star defensive lineman from Vanderbilt, Marcus Bradley. T-Frank tells Bradley's story, rife with comically lousy timing for the former Maryland native. While Bradley has more than his fair share of concerns, T-Frank provides context to a turbulent first year on campus with the Commodores.Next, he shines the spotlight on former UCF quarterback Dillion Gabriel. Fans may be familiar with Gabriel's play with Central Florida, but he gives a quick scouting report on Gabriel for those who aren't. The Hawaii native has skills that not only fit offensive coordinator Mike Yurchich's offense but should also remind Penn State fans of a former Penn State quarterback.According to T-Frank, former LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is the last player and the best fit. Penn State football is heading into the final two weeks before the early signing period and trying to secure their class. But when news broke on Monday that Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly was leaving the Fighting Irish to head south to LSU, things changed. Head coach James Franklin and the Nittany Lions are routinely in heated recruiting battles with Notre Dame, and there are a handful of commits in the Class of 2022 that have offers from Penn State.Host Thomas Frank Carr gives you that list and the names on that tally that Penn State is targeting. Penn State's coaching staff is out on the road recruiting this week and next. Locking up the majority of those who have already committed remains their key focus, but with coaching changes happening across the country, that could have an impact on any potential additions down the stretch.Of course, the Nittany Lions already lost a key member of their staff, too. News broke early Tuesday that Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry would be named the next head coach at Virginia Tech. Reporter for Blue White Illustrated, Greg Pickel, and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss the news and how it affects Penn State heading into the 2021-2022 offseason.Before getting to the Penn State side of things, Pickel briefly discusses his time covering Pry as a defensive coordinator and gives his opinion on the job he did at Penn State. While the headlines are about true freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux this week, he wasn't the only true freshman to play on Saturday. Landon Tengwall, a four-star prospect in the Class of 2020, made his collegiate debut as well and, according to host Thomas Frank Carr, stood out. Tengwall didn't start the game, but after starting tackle Caedan Wallace exited midway through the first quarter with illness, Tengwall was inserted at the most challenging position on the offensive line. With less than a month until the deadline, On3 recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr on the BWI Daily Edition to update the status of some final 2022 targets for the Nittany Lions. They start with an update on four-star linebacker Jaishawn Barham, a 2022 prospect that Penn State fans have followed for quite some time. This week, Snyder has an update on the St. Francis Academy product that is the 149th player in the nation, according to On3. The ordinarily quiet Barham still isn’t talking, but there is a new development in his recruiting. The Nittany Lions are still interested in adding another tackle to the class of 2022 as well. Snyder says that after the commitment of Aamil Wagner to Notre Dame, the focus has shifted to a different player, but not the one that Penn State had pursued in the days around Wagener’s commitment. T-Frank brings up the obvious issue of adding more players to this current class and asks how much getting a transfer lineman plays into the overall approach to the remaining scholarship spots Penn State is holding. The last name to know this week is 2022 linebacker Moses Walker. The current Rutgers commit is someone that Snyder has learned more about in recent weeks and tells T-Frank what the updated situation is with the Erasmus Hall four-star defender. With less than a month remaining, T-Frank asks Snyder how confident he is that Penn State can get the Class of 2022 to the finish line of the early signing period in December. Earlier this week on the recruiting podcast, Snyder noted that Kaytron Allen took an official visit to Florida State. He gives context to that again on the show. After that, they move on to the Class of 2023 and some key names in that group. Snyder wrote an article recently about Life Christian Academy offensive lineman Joshua Miller, so he fills the audience in on what he learned. Penn State football hosts Rutgers for their final home game of the 2021 regular season on Saturday. To get you ready, Thomas Frank Carr, host of the BWI Daily Edition, brings on James Kratch of NJ.com to preview the game from the Scarlett Knights perspective. The Penn State football team lost 21-17 this weekend in another dud performance from the Penn State offense. So what has happened to the ordinarily high-flying squad under head coach James Franklin? Is it the new coaching staff or something else? Host Thomas Frank Carr takes you through the moments and stories off the field that all led up a 4th-and-2 pass to Cam Sullivan-Brown to end the game. He argues that James Franklin the recruiter has let down James Franklin the coach, not the other way around. The story's first and most crucial element is that James Franklin has not adapted and adopted the transfer portal. As a result, while players and talent have left the program, the influx of players has been drastically lower. While some teams can offset this in recruiting, T-Frank argues that Penn State is not one of them for one key reason. He also addressed the issue of coaching stability on the offensive side of the ball since 2018. Penn State faced Michigan in a highly-anticipated showdown in the Big Ten East Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, they weren’t able to pull off the upset. After going down 14-6 in the third quarter, Penn State managed to tie the game 14-14 following a Sean Clifford to Tyler Warren touchdown and a Jahan Dotson two-point conversion. The Nittany Lions then got a fumble recovery on the following drive deep in Michigan territory following an Arnold Ebiketie sack. However, they could only get a field goal out of it, leaving the door open for Jim Harbaugh’s squad. Michigan TE Erick All made them pay with a 47-yard touchdown on 2nd and 9. The Nittany Lions then went four-and-out and were unable to stop Michigan from getting a first down. Penn State is now 6-4 on the season with Senior Day set for next Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Penn State football held open practice yesterday, and senior editor of Blue White Illustrated Nate Bauer joins the BWI Daily Edition to fill you in on what he saw. Host Thomas Frank Carr joins him to discuss their observations from open practice and what head coach James Franklin said after practice. From his perspective, Bauer thought that one particular position group was sharp on Wednesday night, which has been the case for several weeks now. T-Frank focused on the offensive and defensive lines during the open period and came away with some distinct impressions. He noticed what they were working on and how offensive line coach Phil Trautwein was coaching his players. Next, they have a lengthy discussion about the running game and the running backs for Penn State. After practice, James Franklin was very clear about what he's looking for to separate one runner from the rest. With that in mind, T-Frank has a clear picture of what he thinks should happen going forward with the reps at that position. Next, he and Bauer talk about the pros and cons of the run game and how one or two runs can change the picture dramatically. After that, T-Frank introduces a new question segment on the show where he takes questions from fans submitted on Twitter. Penn State football faces Michigan in their second-to-last home game of the regular season on Saturday. So what do you know about the Wolverines? Clayton Sayfie of The Wolverine jones host Thomas Frank Carr to give an in-depth scouting report on Penn State's next opponent. As always, they start on the offensive side of the ball, but unlike most shows, T-Frank begins up front with Jim Harbaugh. Facing a crossroads this offseason, Harbaugh made significant changes on that side of the ball, resulting in a much more effective offense in 2021. What did he change? Sayfie fills T-Frank in on the details and how they've changed the Michigan front. They also go into how former Penn State assistant coach Josh Gattis' influenced the offense and blended the two philosophies. After that, they discuss some specific schemes that Penn State has struggled against historically and that Michigan has incorporated this season. Have they been effective? Penn State football faced Michigan on Saturday in one of the most anticipated home games of the season. After watching the film, looking up the data, and listening to experts, host Thomas Frank Carr has boiled the entire game down to just one key matchup. He believes how left tackle Rasheed Walker, right tackle Caedan Wallace and quarterback Sean Clifford handle the pass rush of Michigan edge rushers Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo will determine the outcome of the game on Saturday. The path to victory for Michigan is clear. First and foremost, they need to win enough one-on-one battles on the edge of the pocket to force quarterback Sean Clifford to make a critical mistake. If they can disrupt the Nittany Lions' passing attack with quick pressures and sacks, Penn State does not have an effective means of moving the football. Penn State got their sixth win of the season on Saturday to make the team bowl eligible. Yet inconsistencies on offense continue to be a problem, and the team still cannot run the football. It's causing some fans to question whether or not head coach James Franklin got the wrong guy in offensive line coach Phil Trautwein. Trautwein was hired in the winter of 2020 after Franklin decided not to renew the contract for then offensive line coach Matt Limegrover, who has been with the team for four seasons. Trautwein was brought in and regarded as an upgrade at the position as both a technical coach and a recruiter. Thomas Frank Carr dives into Phil Tratuwein's resume before Penn State and finds that it's exceedingly short at his current position. The Blue White Illustrated is back for their Monday recap show of Penn State's 33-24 loss to Ohio State in Columbus on Saturday. What went into the game? Are there such things as moral victories? Penn State crawled back from two 10-point deficits against Ohio State on Saturday night, but after a Sean Clifford interception in the fourth quarter, could not muster another. They fell 33-24 in Columbus in a hard fought game that ultimatley leaves the team at 5-3 and on a three-game losing streak. Rivals recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to log another FutureCast for the Class of 2023, the second in as many weeks. Host Thomas Frank Carr takes a look Joshua Miller, the most recent player that Snyder has put a pick in for Penn State and tries to give Nittany Lion fans a glimmer of hope about the offense going forward. The two discuss the player and his situation heading into an announcement date of Nov. 2. Next they discuss the decommitment of Jordan Allen, a three-star cornerback prospect out of Louisiana. T-Frank asks Ryan for a quick breakdown of the timeline and what happened, but they spend most of their time focusing on what happens next for the Class of 2022 and how Penn State can use that particular scholarship. Ryan also gives T-Frank his thoughts on how much this turn of events stings for the Nittany Lions on a scale of one to five. Next they take a look at the stretch run for Penn State recruiting and what sort of December and January that staff is in store for this winter. Penn State opened up practice to media availability on Wednesday night and senior editor Nate Bauer was there to take in the sights and sounds. He joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss what he saw and his thoughts about it. They discuss: -The absence of Ta'Quan Roberson -Focus on the running game -The offensive line They take a good amount of time talking about the Penn State offensive line and how we got to its current personality this season. Penn State football is 0-2 over its last two game weeks and is now staring down a matchup with fifth-ranked Ohio State in Columbus on Saturday. While you may have seen the lopsided scores that the Buckeyes have been piling up over the last several weeks, host Thomas Frank Carr takes you deeper into the Buckeyes depth chart with Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch. Rabinowitz joins the BWI Daily Edition to give a closer look at Ohio State's offense, defense, and coaches as he tells you just how this season has gone for head coach Ryan Day's team. They start on the offensive side of the ball with redshirt freshman quarterback CJ Stroud and take a look at his season to date. The young signal-caller had some bumps to start the season, but Rabinowitz explains why that was the case and what has happened since he sat against Akron early in the season. From there T-Frank asks Rabinowitz if this is the most talented group of pass-catchers that Ohio State has had in recent memory. Does he think so? And what separates this group from the teams of the past? After that, the pair moves on to talk about the Ohio State offensive line and how talented they are up front. A line shuffle this offseason created a unique group of players up front and Rabinowitz tells T-Frank what he thinks of their potential as a unit. While discussing the running game, Rabinowitz compares freshman running back TreVeyon Henderson, not to a former Ohio State player at his position, but rather one that might surprise Penn State fans. They then shift their focus to the defense and how it's changed since secondary coach Matt Barnes took over play-calling duties mid-season. There's one key area that Ohio State has improved according to Rabinowitz and he says it's helped a young group of defenders. Speaking of that group, is there a player that can contend with Jahan Dotson? Rabinowitz gives his thoughts. What about up front? Is there another Joey Bosa or Nick Young on the way for the Buckeyes that the Nittany Lions have to deal with? The group along the defensive line is built differently than in the past according to Rabinowitz and he thinks their strengths lie in more than just one player. Finally they wrap up by looking at the linebackers and then discussing if Penn State's offense can produce enough points to keep up with Ryan Day's squad.
