Penn State made the recruiting class of 2021 available to the media for the first time as Nittany Lions football players on Wednesday. Blue White Illustrated was on had to speak to them and get the first impression of the group. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, senior editor Nate Bauer, and reporter Greg Pickel give you their thoughts about the players they spoke to Wednesday. They do so on-location from the Penn State outdoor practice facility. Pickel starts by relating his conversation by relating his feelings about the group and his major takeaway about their collective personality. It's coming down to crunch time for Penn State football with several top prospects as May draws to a close. The BWI Daily Edition Recruiting show focuses on two top prospects who have been in the news lately. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and reporter Greg Pickel tackle that and other notable news items from the last week. They start with the news that four-star receiver Rodney Gallagher moved up his commitment date from July 4th to May 25th. This news comes just days after reports in the recruiting world surfaced that Gallagher was leaning towards committing to West Virginia. What's going on? Snyder explains what he's learned and what factors play into the Laurel Highlands receiver's situation. Also, where does Snyder think that Gallagher will choose Wednesday? He gives his thoughts. Next, they discuss another Penn State prospect that was supposedly a lock for the Nittany Lions in three-star defensive end Mason Robinson. Penn State football writers will get their first chance to speak to the recruiting class of 2021 this week. The program will host a media session on Wednesday for the 15 players from the class in their first official interviews as Nittany Lions. The progam has a long-standing policy not to allow players to speak to the media in their freshman year, but now that the group has had a year on campus (and media training), they'll meet with reporters for the first time. Host Thomas Frank Carr, and senior Editor Nate Bauer, set the stage for the introduction on the BWI Daily Edition. The pair start by recapping the players in the class, projected starters, and players who will contend for playing time next Fall.T-Frank and Bauer start by running back the history of the Class of 2021, which had a senior year in high school unlike any other. However, many fans are frustrated that Clifford is the presumed starter heading into next Fall. So the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, is endeavoring to find out how the Nittany Lions can be successful next season by looking to the past. He’s examining the 2019 Penn State football team through PFF data to determine what they did to win ten games and threaten a College Football Playoff spot. The key to winning is surrounding quarterback Sean Clifford with a team that can help shoulder the load. Of course, a critical part of any winning team is a solid defense, and today, T-Frank looks at that side of the ball. However, it’s not a clean translation since the departure of former defensive coordinator Brent Pry. So while T-Frank starts in 2019 to give a sense of what that team was like, he quickly transitions to what Manny Diaz did at his zenith in Maimi. That means he looks instead to the 2018 Miami Hurricanes and the DNA of that defense under Diaz. T-Frank looks at the main features of the defense, critical stats, and overall team production to find common threads. Which positions have the best battles shaping up for Penn State football in the Fall? Where are the weak points on the roster? Greg Pickel watched all the film from the Blue-White Game and built a depth chart based on what he saw during the scrimmage. According to multiple reports, the Penn State athletic director search is coming to a close this week. Penn State football offered current quarterback Drew Allar when he was an up-and-coming four-star player for Medina high school in Ohio. The soon-to-be Nittany Lion committed to the team before his senior season and erupted into a five-star, top-ten player in the Class of 2022. Today, the BWI Daily Edition takes you behind that transformation from a talented passer into a borderline superstar with the man who helped him get there. Private quarterback trainer Brad Maendler started working with Allar before his junior season and has tutored Allar throughout his final two seasons. Maendler takes you into the "Why behind the what." The Why Behind the WhatMaendler starts the show by explaining how he got into quarterback coaching. A former quarterback himself, it's an unlikely way that he started coaching players professionally. He explains learning the biomechanics behind throwing and where he learned them.After that, host Thomas Frank Carr and Maendler dive into the subject of Allar. The Ohio native explains what made him reach out to Allar's parents in the first place and how the young quarterback impressed him during training. Much like Penn State's other five-star players in the 2022 class, Allar went through a transformation during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The next in that line is three-star defensive end, Mason Robinson. The junior defender is heading into his senior season, holding an offer from Penn State, and is fresh off a visit to the school. He sits down with the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, to discuss his time in Happy Valley. Penn State football took a two-month hiatus between commitments, but they finally snagged another player for the Class of 2023 in four-star tight end, Andrew Rappleyea. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss how the New England product landed at Penn State. After that, T-Frank discusses something interesting James Franklin said last week that piqued his interest. Franklin mentioned that the Penn State staff uses zoom to communicate with committed freshmen that aren't enrolled early. How does that change who can play early in their career? There were several notable Penn State recruiting prospects at the Under Armour camp in Baltimore on Sunday, and the BWI Daily Recruiting show was there to see them perform. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder was on-hand to see the Class of 2023 and beyond test and compete during the final weekend of March. So, they'll tell you the major news and observations that came out of the event on the show. They start with four-star linebacker Tony Rojas. He delivered some significant and rare news to Snyder on Sunday, which Snyder retells on the show. While "quiet period" sounds serene, it is anything but that.
