Ep 251BWI Daily: Recapping Penn State's NFL Draft

This past weekend, Penn State had eight players selected in the 2022 NFL Draft. So who went to a good situation? Who found themselves stuck in a bad one? Blue White Illustrated film analyst Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel discuss that on the BWI Daily Edition. They breakdown the entire draft weekend from former Nittany Lion Jahan Dotson going 16th overall to the four undrafted players signing with teams after the event's conclusion. They start the show with Pickel's observations about the trends of the NFL and the draft based on the changing landscape of the NFL. T-Frank picks up on Pickel's thought and discusses Penn State's top selection, Dotson, who went higher than most experts anticipated. What caused his draft stock to rise? T-Frank compares the situation to the "slide" of linebacker Micah Parsons last season. Before moving on to the next Nittany Lion draft pick, T-Frank comments on one very unique aspect of this draft that he saw play out on Thursday and Friday night. From there, T-Frank shows the full list of drafted Penn State Nittany Lions, which Pickel comments that a bulk of the talent from Penn State went in the final two rounds. He also touches on Rasheed Walker and Brandon Smith leaving college early and not finding a home until Day 3 of the draft. Check out the full show for more. Ep 247BWI Daily: Update on Penn State's athletic director search with Nate Bauer

According to multiple reports, the Penn State athletic director search is coming to a close this week. Senior editor Nate Bauer joins the BWI Daily podcast to fill us in on that information Wednesday, April 27. He wrote two articles about the situation this week and fills host Thomas Frank Carr in on what has happened since he reported on Sunday that the Nittany Lions would be naming a new AD within the week. Next, T-Frank asks Bauer to fill him in on Pat Kraft's career and what accomplishments make him the targeted candidate for the job. Bauer details the early part of Kraft's career but focuses mainly on his time as the AD at Temple and Boston College. So what makes his work stand out at those two stops? Bauer points to some critical improvements at Temple to start, one of which was a defeat of the Nittany Lions in 2015. Before getting to his time at Boston College, T-Frank notices a trend in Kraft working at schools in the northeast. Does that give him an advantage? Bauer can point to one reason why it might. They also discuss what Kraft did in his two seasons at Boston College that stands out. While he was not there for a long time, he secured some critical improvements for the athletic department and the football team. Finally, T-Frank and Bauer discuss his first business orders need to be at Penn State. Ep 246Recruiting Show: Recapping Penn State's Blue-White weekend

It was a successful Blue-White weekend for Penn State football, with around 80 prospects on hand to see the event. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and reporter Greg Pickel discuss what went down this weekend, their observations, and more on the BWI Daily Recruiting Show. They'll also share what they know about Penn State's latest commit in the Class of 2023, Conrad Hussey. Finally, they'll finish the show and discuss key recruits in '23 who have released or will release their top schools shortly.Pickel starts the show with Penn State's newest Nittany Lion. The three-star defensive back chose the Nittany Lions in a surprise move on Monday, and since then, BWI has had a chance to talk to Hussey and his advisors. Pickel gives his impressions of Hussey from his interview earlier in the week, and Snyder tells the audience what he learned from Hussey's step-father and coach. So how well will a Florida player who commits after one visit stick? Snyder and Pickel give their thoughts. Finally, Pickel explains why Hussey wanted to commit to a school so far from home.Next, they discuss the Blue-White game and the weekend recruiting effort. Before getting to the list of names present on Saturday, they discuss the misconceptions about the event. For example, Snyder tells the audience why top recruits for the current cycle were not in attendance this weekend. Outside of a few players, the list of visitors focused more on the Class of 2024. Snyder also explains some of the hiccups and pitfalls with so many recruits on campus. He also explains the subtle ways he can tell which players are the priority recruits in attendance.Of those names, though, Snyder mentions linebacker Ta'Mere Robinson. The four-star defender out of Pittsburgh was open with him about how close he was to committing to Penn State and why he didn't. To get the complete list of players, check out the video. After discussing Cass Tech defensive end, Jalen Thompson, Snyder, and Pickel break down several 2023 prospects that have released their final list of schools. Pittsburgh receiver Rodney Gallagher and Alabama safety DaKaari Nelson had Penn State in their final eight schools. Ep 245BWI Daily: Evaluating Penn State's quarterbacks during the Blue-White Game

On Saturday, Penn State football concluded its spring season with the 2022 Blue-White Game. Since then, film analyst Thomas Frank Carr has been reviewing the film and takes you in-depth into one throw for each quarterback during the Blue-White Game to give you a sense of what they accomplished during the scrimmage. This video is free to YouTube fans, but check out his extended breakdown of each quarterback to see the complete picture. Not a member of Blue-White Illustrated? Join for just one dollar and get access to premium content. Penn State quarterback evaluation from the Blue-White GameT-Frank starts with the Nittany Lion's starting quarterback, Sean Clifford. The sixth-year senior didn't have much to do throughout the afternoon, with plenty of pre-determined reads, but T-Frank takes you through one play that he feels indicates Clifford's comfort and poise in the offense. How has he progressed in the second season under offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich? T-Frank breaks down a play from the first half that shows his ability to read the defense and make a decision quickly. Next, he moves on to quarterback Christian Veilleux. It seemed that the redshirt freshman quarterback was off on his deep passing attempts on several plays. But, according to T-Frank, what looks like an errant ball is something else entirely. He breaks down the play and tries to find which party is to blame for miscommunication in the attempt. This play also provides insight into first-year defensive coordiantor Manny Diaz's scheme. After that, T-Frank pulls up a play for freshman quarterback Drew Allar. On Saturday, the five-star looked shaky and unsure of himself, missing receivers and having erratic accuracy. Was that indeed the case? T-Frank doesn't think so and explains what Allar was trying to do and why he looked so off. Finally, it's time to examine quarterback Beau Pribula. The second freshman quarterback impressed T-Frank with one throw that showed all of his skills in an effortless deep ball completion. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. So how has that gone this spring? Next, Bauer explains what Franklin had to say. T-Fank comments on how that conversation has changed this offseason from Franklin's first comment to now. Finally, they discuss how learning a new defense has held back discussions about leadership on the defensive side of the ball.Next, They move on to Franklin's comments about the offensive line. The head coach was more open about the injuries that his front five suffered this spring and who has been able to play. First, Bauer and T-Frank discuss the names he mentioned to set the stage. Specifically, Bauer mentions how Franklin described the effect of freshmen Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen on the group. From there, they dive into the BWI Mailbag to answer your questions. Ep 241BWI Daily: Can Penn State slot corner Daequan Hardy expand his role?

Penn State cornerback Daequan Hardy and defensive end Nick Tarburton spoke with the media yesterday ahead of the team's annual Blue-White Game. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, and senior editor Nate Bauer, discuss their impressions ahead of the weekend. They start with slot corner Daequan Hardy. Hardy is quietly one of the best players on the team, but his role last season was surprisingly small. So does Hardy want that to change? T-Frank asked the redshirt junior that question on Tuesday, and he plays Hardy's answer on the show. First, they discuss Hardy's response and examine if his role can expand.Does he have the skills to play other positions? Once again, T-Frank picks Hardy's brain to find out what makes a good boundary corner, and then he and Bauer examine if Hardy has the physical and mental skills to execute that role. Next, the discussion about Hardy and his fit inside the new Manny Diaz defense expands to the rest of the secondary. While Hardy is one of the better coverage players, the system may use players differently. Is there more room for his role to grow naturally this year? Finally, T-Frank and Bauer discuss who will play behind linebacker Jonathan Sutherland and how that position impacts Hardy. Finally, they shift their attention to defensive end Nick Tarburton. The veteran defensive end dished some interesting information on several young players who have stood out this spring. You'll hear his comments on running back Nick Singleton, safety Zakee Wheatley, and fellow edge rusher Smith Vilbert. Additionally, Bauer recalls Tarburton's thoughts on offensive lineman Olu Fashanu, Caedan Wallace, and center Juice Scruggs. Tarburton has high praise for the offensive linemen and the running game so far this spring.Next, they dig into Tarburton's impact on the defense for the upcoming year. Despite gaining some critical help in the transfer portal, T-Frank explains why Tarburton needs to take a step as a pass rusher for the defense to succeed. Finally, they delve into how the other players at the defensive end position need to play a role next fall.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 240Recruiting Show: Could Penn State be on the verge of another commitment?

Penn State football heads into an important weekend for recruiting with the Blue-White game on Saturday. Who is coming up for the weekend? Also, which players might commit soon? Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and reporter Greg Pickel discuss that and more on the BWI Daily Recruiting Show. They start with the latest update from Roman Catholic defensive end Jameial Lyons. The four-star defensive end moved the date up on his commitment announcement from August to this spring. Snyder and Pickel tell you when and what that means for Penn State. Snyder also gives you the context and back-story to Lyons' first announced date and when he made it.Next, Pickel discusses the ecosystem that Lyons comes from, which is the Philadelphia football scene. He explains the diversity of schools, players, and influences in the region that make it a challenging area to peg in terms of Penn State's home-court advantage. Finally, Pickel drops a tidbit about a player on the opposite side of the state. After they discuss Lyons, Pickel, and Snyder, they move on to discuss a player that earned five-star status in Penn State offensive line commit Alex Birchmeier. He's the second Nittany Lion commit for 2023 to earn the honor and joins future teammate Jven Williams in the recognition. But, more than ranking, Snyder has high praise for how good a player Birchmeier is.The discussion about Birchmeier quickly transitions into the rest of the On300 update, which dropped this week. Birchmeier isn't the only Penn State prospect to move in the rankings. Snyder quickly brings up one that he thinks is still underrated in the process in Life Christian Academy lineman Josh Miller. On the flip side, Penn State safety prospect Cam Seldon dropped in the rankings. Snyder gives some insight about why he might have fallen, and it's not precisely about Seldon's talent. Other players that Snyder mentions are defensive tackle Daevin Hobbs and offensive lineman Oluwatosin Babalade. Snyder spoke with Babalade earlier this week and got a distinct impression about the DeMatha Catholic offensive lineman. From there, they discuss other important players for the Class of 2023 that have Penn State listed in their final schools. Those players include safety Jayden Bonsu and four-star defensive end Desmond Umeozulu. The duo debate whether or not the Nittany Lions are a serious contender for either prospect to land in Happy Valley. Finally, they wrap up with a preview of the week, including a tease for the Friday edition of the BWI Daily, where Snyder will discuss the list of players that plan to attend the first Blue-White game open to fans in two years.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 239BWI Daily: Offensive line and Blue-White Game preview

The Penn State football team heads into their final week of spring practice, and the BWI Daily Edition is here to get you ready. Host Thomas Frank Carr looks at the 2022 Blue White game, the first in two years, to give you a sense of what to expect on Saturday.T-Frank starts with the Penn State offensive line and how things have gone so far this spring for the Nittany Lions. Then, he plays clips from head coach James Franklin to explain how that group will affect what you see on the field in Beaver Stadium this weekend. To illustrate the problem, T-Frank shows viewers the depth chart at the start of spring practice. Penn State had been very thin at the position before injuries started mounting this year. Without knowing which players have been missing and what amount of time they've missed, he explains the problem broadly.Next, he brings up the issue of installing and refining the offense under second-year coordinator Mike Yurcich. While most fans and media focus on the quarterback's mastery of the scheme, how is the rest of the offense? Specifically, what about the offensive line? With players missing time and depth scarce, has that helped the available players get more reps? Or has it hurt the unit to be down in functionality? T-Frank asked Franklin last week, and he plays Franklin's answer. The following conversation springing from Franklin's answer is about the rest of the offense. Can they effectively pick things up with the line struggling to field a complete unit? Does the defense get quality work going against them? Next, t-Frank dives into one specific aspect of the offense, helped by Yurcich's comments about trying to improve the team's deep passing game a year ago. He explains how important each rep is and why the team has worked hard to make things normal this spring.Lastly, he gets into what fans should expect out of the game on Saturday.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 237BWI Daily: Interview with Drew Allar QB coach Brad Maendler

Penn State football offered current quarterback Drew Allar when he was an up-and-coming four-star player for Medina high school in Ohio. The soon-to-be Nittany Lion committed to the team before his senior season and erupted into a five-star, top-ten player in the Class of 2022. Today, the BWI Daily Edition takes you behind that transformation from a talented passer into a borderline superstar with the man who helped him get there. Private quarterback trainer Brad Maendler started working with Allar before his junior season and has tutored Allar throughout his final two seasons. Maendler takes you into the "Why behind the what." The Why Behind the WhatMaendler starts the show by explaining how he got into quarterback coaching. A former quarterback himself, it's an unlikely way that he started coaching players professionally. He explains learning the biomechanics behind throwing and where he learned them. After that, host Thomas Frank Carr and Maendler dive into the subject of Allar. The Ohio native explains what made him reach out to Allar's parents in the first place and how the young quarterback impressed him during training. Much like Penn State's other five-star players in the 2022 class, Allar went through a transformation during the Covid-19 Pandemic. That topic ties into something that T-Frank saw from Maendler online when discussing linear versus rotational throwing mechanics. Maendler then explains the evolution of traditional throwing mechanics and how he helped Allar change from a baseball thrower into a modern quarterback. Through this, he describes a new way of throwing, which quarterbacks from the NFL down, use to deliver the football with consistent power and accuracy. T-Frank wants to know more, so he asks Maendler if this is where Allar's improved accuracy came from his senior season. They discuss the transformation process and the effort that Allar put into the switch. Maendler also gives insight into the Penn State freshman's personality and work ethic. While most of their time deals with Penn State's prized quarterback, T-Frank wants insight into the other people and factors into Allar's development. He asks Maendler how the Medina offense relied on the 6-5 passer and how he made it his own over time. They also discuss Penn State quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. What are his impressions of the second-year Penn State coordinator? He explains what he likes about Yurcich and what they have in common. Finally, T-Frank asks about another pupil that Maendler is currently working with, four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery. The 6-2 Class of 2025 passer visited Penn State last weekend and is a high-priority player for his cycle. What makes him so good? Maendler describes his physical and mental approach to the game. Ep 236BWI Daily: Practice Observations and Mailbag with Nate Bauer

Penn State football held its fourth open practice on Wednesday, and Blue White Illustrated was there to gather in the sights and sounds. First, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer give you their impressions of what they saw and heard in today's edition of the BWI Daily. After that, they take questions from viewers and listeners in their weekly mailbag segment. The best way to get your question on air is to join BWI for just one dollar and get 12 months of access to the Lions Den Message Forum, where T-Frank posts his call for questions each week.Practice ObservationsBauer starts the show off by looking into the punting situation with the Nittany Lions. After having consistency at the position for six seasons between Blake Gillikin and Jordan Stout, Penn State enters a new era. After watching them perform in practice, Bauer gives his impressions of Gabe Nwuosu and Barney Amour. After that, they discuss the first live work that Penn State has shown the media this spring. The first-team offense faced the first-team defense for a goal-line play, followed by a two-point conversion with the second string. How did that go? What did Bauer and T-Frank take from what they saw? Finally, they discuss what's valuable and not valuable from those moments. Finally, they discuss safety Keaton Ellis and his presence with the Penn State defense. Bauer thinks that Ellis is highly underrated this spring as a player that needs to get more attention. Why? Bauer explains. After that, they discuss the topics that the media asked head coach James Franklin. They discuss the offensive line depth issues, what Franklin has in store for the Blue White Game, and more. Finally, they transition to the mailbag portion of the show to discuss what fans have on their minds. They start with a question about the transfer portal. Based on James Franklin's comment from yesterday, fans want to know more about what to expect in terms of players leaving after the spring semester is over. Bauer breaks the conversation down into two types of players that leave the program based on the situation. T-Frank follows up with his thoughts about where to look for the players Bauer describes. After that, T-Frank clarifies a misconception about the labeling of pass rushers and linebackers in football. Then he projects what players factor into Penn State's picture at that position. They spend more time addressing the transfer portal with the offensive line in mind, and Bauer cautions that things will get wild the longer that NIL and the portal are unregulated. Nevertheless, he paints a stormy picture of the stability of competition in sports.Fans also ask about new transfer Demeioun Robinson, Sean Clifford in 2022, and more.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 235BWI Daily: Penn State prospect Mason Robinson recaps trip to Happy Valley

Penn State football has a long and successful track record of recruiting players, especially defenders, from McDonough high school in Maryland. The next in that line is three-star defensive end, Mason Robinson. The junior defender is heading into his senior season, holding an offer from Penn State, and is fresh off a visit to the school. He sits down with the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, to discuss his time in Happy Valley. They'll also discuss his trip to South Carolina, his game, and T-Frank finishes the interview by getting to know Robinson better. They start with Robinson's trip last weekend to Penn State's campus to watch practice and meet with the staff. First, Robinson takes a moment to thank the people that hosted him over the weekend. Next, he explains that he wanted to get to know defensive line coach John Scott Jr. more on his fourth trip to the school. The 6-3 defensive end came away impressed with Scott and the program overall. He also gives T-Frank insight into Penn State head coach James Franklin as a coach.Next, Robinson lets T-Frank know who he met on the trip from a player level. There's a long list of McDonough players on the roster, and Robinson met them all. That includes fifth-year defensive tackle PJ Mustipher, whom he met for the first time. He gives some insight into the conversation they had as well.Next, they pull back from Penn State and discuss what Robinson looks for from a school. Finally, he explains what environment he and his parents want for his next football destination. With that in mind, T-Frank asks about Robinson's trip to South Carolina on April 4th. Robinson gives his impressions of the school, the football program, and what he thought of the weather. After that, they shift to discussing Robinson's game on the field. After discussing some of the Maryland native's favorite pass-rushing moves in their last conversation, they look instead at his approach to the game mentally. First, t-Franks asks Robinson to describe himself as a football player and then discusses what he's seen of the McDonough edge rusher on film. From there, they discuss film study, his father's influence on him, and what he has in store for himself from a physical growth perspective. Finally, they wrap up with some "get to know you" questions.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 234Recruiting Show: Penn State lands two key players in four days

Penn State football filled several significant holes in the past four days with a commitment in recruiting and one in the transfer portal. That's the main focus of the BWI Daily Recruiting Show, hosted by Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder. They'll discuss the stories of Demeioun Robinson, the former Maryland defensive end that committed to Penn State on Tuesday, and Class of 2023 quarterback Marcus Stokes, who announced his commitment on Friday. Finally, they'll dig into two more players that have Penn State in their top groups for the 2023 cycle. They start with the breaking news on Tuesday. Former four-star commit for the Class of 2021, Demeioun Robinson, chose Penn State fairly early in the process after entering the transfer portal late last month. The former top-50 player in the nation spent one season at Maryland before deciding to leave.Snyder fills in the gaps in his recruiting process, which the COVID-19 Pandemic derailed. He also provides some context about Penn State's contact with Robinson during that time and how that may have expedited his recruitment this spring. Pickel backs that conversation up with quotes from head coach James Franklin about how important Robinson's position was for Penn State in the portal. From there, they rewind the clock to Friday evening to discuss three-star quarterback Marcus Stokes' commitment to Penn State. The Ponte Vedra Beach, FL native, chose Penn State reasonably early in his recruiting process, and Snyder explains how that came about and how Stokes talks about the Nittany Lions. He also gives insight into where the currently unraked Stokes might land in the next update of On3's recruiting rankings.Snyder also discusses how quickly Stokes became Penn State's top quarterback target after they moved on from five-star quarterback Dante Moore this winter.Next, they continue the examination of the Class of 2023 and focus on two players that are still uncommitted. First is four-star edge rusher Jameial Lyons. The Philadelphia native has Penn State on his final list of schools and announced that he'd make his selection of school in August. So who is the team to beat with Lyons? Furthermore, where has the rising senior improved the most since Penn State began recruiting him? Snyder explains that and more. Finally, they end with a four-star offensive lineman from Michigan, Amir Herring. The West Bloomfield native has Penn State in his final list of schools but do the Nittany Lions stand a real chance? Snyder gives his predictions on where Herring will land and why.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 233BWI Daily: What to expect from the Penn State defense

While things are still taking shape, we have a better sense of what Penn State's defense will look like under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. The first-year Penn State coordinator spoke with the media last week, and the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, pieces together the clues to get a rough outline of some of the changes. He uses evidence from head coach James Franklin, Diaz, and linebacker Curtis Jacobs to build a sketch of the differences between the former Miami head coach and former Penn State defensive coordinator Brent Pry.To find the differences, T-Frank starts with the similarities. First, he recaps what Franklin said about Diaz during the winter and explains how both coaches come from similar backgrounds. Then, he allows Franklin to explain the differences that Diaz is bringing to Happy Valley. Next, T-Frank fills in the context of what Franklin said with some details and examples. Lastly, he leaves you with one element that might be noticeable when watching things this spring's Blue White Game.Next, he dips into the coverage aspect of defense by asking Diaz what sort of system he believes in. The Penn State explains what he believes in and leaves a big clue about what the Nittany Lions need to be successful next fall. This nugget leads to a discussion about the transfer portal and a common thread between the Miami defense in 2021 and Penn State's current squad. T-Frank thinks that one aspect of the defensive structure will dictate what sort of coordinator Diaz is on Saturdays. This thought brings him to starting linebacker Curtis Jacobs. How is the adjustment to the new defense going? Jacobs explains what it takes to get everyone on the same page.Next, T-Frank explains why Jacobs is a crucial player in the defense next fall. It's not just that he's the most experienced linebacker returning, but his skill set is essential for Diaz's defense to thrive. T-Frank details those skills and what will likely be asked of Jacobs next fall.Lastly, T-Frank takes all of that information and outlines what he expects the new defensive coordinator to be like next season. Will he be aggressive? How will he use his coverage players? While some information is yet to gather, T-Frank expects an aggressive and attacking defense.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 231BWI Daily: Penn State recruiting visitor list for April 8-10

This weekend, Penn State football hosts several key recruits from both the portal and the following several recruiting classes. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily edition to discuss the critical names and positions Penn State is hosting over the next few hours.Host Thomas Frank Carr starts the show by addressing Penn State's immediate need, edge rusher. The team hosts former Maryland edge rusher Demeioun Robinson on Friday as they continue to seek help at that position in the portal. But, is he the answer that they seek? Yes, according to T-Frank.He explains what skills the former top 100 recruit has and why he might be the best option left after Penn State missed out on their top targets earlier this year. He and Snyder also discuss Akheem Mesidor and how he would fit at Penn State. Head coach James Franklin outlined that Penn State is very interested in a portal edge so landing one will be critical. However, according to both Snyder and T-Frank, something might get in the way of the Nittany Lions landing either prospect.Next, Snyder runs down the list of players visiting this weekend in recruiting. Players he mentions include unranked defensive end Mason Robinson from McDonough, and several other important players in the 2023 cycle, including quarterback Marcus Stokes. The Nittany Lions are also hosting another edge rusher, this one from outside of the region in Durham native Jaybron Harvey.Despite having four players on the offensive line locked up for the Class of 2023, Penn State continues to host offensive linemen. Ep 230BWI Daily: Penn State practice observations and mailbag show

The Penn State football team held an open practice on Wednesday night, of which BWI was present. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss what they saw and more of what they heard from Penn State head coach James Franklin, defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, and linebacker Curtis Jacobs. They discuss that and then take viewers' questions on the BWI Daily mailbag edition. The first topic of conversation they start with is something asked by fans of the show that didn't make the mailbag. T-Frank and Bauer explain why there has been less talk and less evaluation of the Penn State offensive line this spring. Next, Bauer describes how the practice works and how the media is limited in some capacities by the setup in Holuba Hall.Next, they discuss the transfer portal's impact on college football rosters. It's a problem not just for Penn State but also for the rest of the country. They discuss how the offensive line has limited numbers this spring and how Penn State uses the portal to find defensive ends. Finally, T-Fanks points to immediate real-world ramifications of NIL and the transfer portal ono Penn State this spring. They discuss Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs's comments after practice and how he's adjusting to his new position as the Will linebacker. How has the transition gone? What is he looking for in his own game? Bauer had a chance to talk to him and gave his thoughts. Finally, they get to the viewer's questions in the BWI Mailbag. First, they discuss Penn State's linebacker situation and depth and contingency plans for injuries at key positions. Next, they discuss Franklin's comments about Hakeem Beamon from Wednesday and what they mean.Next, they have an extended conversation about the situation around guard Saleem Wormley. First, Bauer discusses how the media overlooked his injury last season and why that happened. Then, he discusses how big of an impact and how important of a player he could be for the Nittany Lions next season if he can return to his previous form. After a quick discussion about the Penn State basketball portal activity, T-Frank and Bauer discuss a long-held trope by a large section of the fanbase. Is James Franklin a great recruiter and an average coach? T-Frank challenges the notion not to defend Franklin but to deconstruct an either-or scenario that isn't realistic in college football. Finally, T-Frank looks at the class breakdown and examines where Penn State needs to land a commitment.Three Penn State prospects to watch this spring. The first prospect that T-Frank mentions is four-star receiver Rodney Gallagher. The Pittsburgh native announced five dates this month where he'll visit some of his top schools for unofficial visits. From that list, T-Frank points out the schools that Penn State will have to compete the hardest against to earn Gallagher's services. From there, he explains why Gallagher is such an essential prospect in this class and why T-Frank thinks he's a "must-land" for the Nittany Lions. The second prospect that T-Frank shows is four-star linebacker, Tony Rojas. The speedster linebacker has an impressive list of unofficial visits lined up for the coming month, many of which are in short order. T-Frank notes that several are early NIL heavy-hitters, and one is a perennial powerhouse. Finally, he tells you and then mentions a common thread between Rojas and Gallagher about how their visits line up.The third and final prospect is an under-the-radar player in McDonough defensive end, Mason Robinson. The unranked edge rusher has an offer from Penn State, a short list of schools, and a high track record visiting the school. Is he the most likely player to commit? T-Frank gives a quick scouting report on Robinson because fans might not be familiar with him in a crowded class of edge rushers in the region. Finally, T-Frank brings up a dark horse candidate to commit to the Nittany Lions. Check out the show to hear which player was on campus Wednesday and what that player could mean to the Class of 2023.Finally, T-Frank examines the class by position and side of the ball. Where does Penn State need to secure a commitment? Howx do their class numbers and ranks stack up? Lastly, he gives an outline to end the show.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 227BWI Daily: Andrew Rappleyea commits, five freshmen who can play early

Penn State football took a two-month hiatus between commitments, but they finally snagged another player for the Class of 2023 in four-star tight end, Andrew Rappleyea. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss how the New England product landed at Penn State. After that, T-Frank discusses something interesting James Franklin said last week that piqued his interest. Franklin mentioned that the Penn State staff uses zoom to communicate with committed freshmen that aren't enrolled early. How does that change who can play early in their career? T-Frank dives into that. First, Snyder digs into what happened with Raappleyea, who flipped his commitment from Michigan to the Nittany Lions on Sunday morning. Snyder tells T-Frank the story of how Penn State had four tight end prospects and how Raappleyea, through no fault of his own, found himself on the outside looking in. Next, he goes through the events that happened since then that have opened the door for Rappleyea to join the Class of '23. Snyder also gives some insight into his conversation with the senior tight end this weekend and how he finally decided to flip schools. Lastly, T-Frank gives his initial impressions of Rappleyea's skills as a football player. He's incredibly impressed and even compares him to an early version of a former New England tight end who found success at Penn State. After thanking Ryan for joining him on the show, T-Frank goes solo to discuss something Penn State head coach James Franklin said last week. Franklin mentioned that the team uses Zoom to communicate with freshmen who don't enroll early. The goal is to teach them the offense and the schemes that they need to know along with the team in spring football. How does that change which players T-Frank thinks can contribute early in their career? Drastically. So, T-Frank gives five freshmen who aren't on campus right now that can contribute next fall if they can learn the things they need to via Zoom. But, of course, he isn't counting the players already on campus. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 226BWI Live: Recapping week 3 spring week

Penn State football enters its third week of spring football today, which is the focus of the BWI Live show. Host Thomas Frank Carr, senior Editor Nate Bauer, and reporter Dave Eckert discuss the notable players and topics of the week at noon and other topics related to Penn State's spring practices. Join the show at noon on YouTube to get your questions in and participate in the show! Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media late last week and discussed several topics. One of the most revealing topics is the development of transfer wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley. The former Western Kentucky Hilltopper drew high praise from head coach James Franklin. What did he say, and what can it mean for the Nittany Lion's passing attack next season? The BWI Live crew discusses the impact he has had this spring. Franklin also gave new insight into new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's defense. How much of a learning curve are players on that side of the ball this spring? The panel will tackle that topic as well. Next, they'll stay on the defense and break down the veteran leadership situation. So who is stepping up as a team leader? Where can more leadership develop? That's a question that Franklin did not have an answer for last week, so BWI will sink their teeth into that topic as well. Finally, they will discuss standout Penn State players so far this spring that Franklin brought up. Which young Nittany Lions are ahead of expectations? And is there any update on the offensive line situation for Penn State? You'll also hear from Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and his thoughts about the freshmen on his roster. He had rave reviews for the Penn State running backs and explained the learning curve for the quarterbacks. As always, join the show and ask your questions or suggest topics you'd like to hear BWI discuss on the show. But you can only do that if you join the BWI Live show at noon on YouTube! Ep 225BWI Daily: Penn State recruiting visitors for April 2

Every Friday, the BWI Daily Edition looks at the key visitors on the weekend for Penn State recruiting. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the show to break down the names to know for April 1-3. He and host Thomas Frank Carr also discuss the receiver group for the Class of 2023 and the players who made their way to Happy Valley over the last week as well.Snyder starts the show by discussing the players making their way to Happy Valley over the weekend, comprised chiefly of standouts in the Class of 2024. The first name he brings up is offensive line prospect Kyle Altuner. Last weekend, the Good Counsel offensive lineman was a standout at the Under Armour camp in Baltimore and now visits the Nittany Lions a week later. Snyder explains what he saw at the camp and his strengths as a prospect. The next important player in the group is Mekhai White, a 6-3 receiver from King George, VA. Once again, White is a player that stood out at the Baltimore camp and has multiple offers from schools in the region. So, where does he stand with the Nittany Lions? Snyder explains that and the other schools vying for his services. After discussing several other prospects in the Class of '24, Snyder brings up two names for the weekend that will be significant factors in the Class of 2025. Check out the video to hear who they are. Finally, T-Frank wants to get Snyder's perspective on how spring practice plays into recruiting at this time of the year. Snyder explains that it's not just the on-field work that is important but also the meetings for players.Next, they move on to the players that visited Penn State this previous week and Snyder's conversations with them. T-Frank starts with Texas wide receiver Kyle Parker, who has an interesting and unique recruiting story with the Nittany Lions. From there, they transition from Parker to offensive lineman Amir Herring, a four-star prospect from Michigan and a part of the On300. Penn State already has four offensive linemen, so why are they still courting Herring? Snyder explains. Finally, they discuss the wide receiver board. That's because four-star receiver and in-state product Rodney Gallagher announced that he would visit the school on April 30th. How important is that visit? Snyder says it's not about the visit to Penn State but other critical visits to advance Gallagher's recruitment. T-Frank and Snyder then discuss Gallagher's importance to the Class of 2023 and the receiver board this cycle. Lastly, they preview the month ahead and what happens when the NCAA calendar flips from the quiet period into the evaluation period in the middle of the month. Ep 224BWI Daily: Open practice impressions and mailbag with Nate Bauer

Penn State football held their second open practice of the spring period, and Blue White Illustrated was there to see it. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer share their impression of the 20 minutes that media was allowed to view Wednesday night and then take viewer questions for their weekly mailbag show.As always, if you'd like to get a question on the show, the best way is to sign up for Blue White Illustrated for just one dollar and get 12 months of access. Check it out here.Bauer starts the conversation by discussing what he saw from the special teams period of practice, which made up the bulk of the viewing experience. While it's easy to overlook, the punter and kicker positions are vacant this offseason after the graduation of specialist Jordan Stout. So was there anything to be gained? Both T-Frank and Bauer were intrigued by some of the players they saw returning punts. After that, Bauer discusses what he saw from the all-important quarterback position while T-Frank gives his thoughts on what he saw from the skill positions, including receiver. Then, after bringing up third-year wide-out Malick Meiga, T-Frank transitions into the mailbag portion of the show. One viewer asks if Meiga's prominence this spring is real or hype. Bauer gives his thoughts that Meiga's hype is real this spring. According to Bauer, the Canadian receiver was not a part of the picture last season for an important reason, and the positive feedback has been growing all year. On the other hand, T-Frank says that the hype is noise despite his earlier praise. Finally, he explains what he needs to see to understand what sort of player Meiga is.Next, they answer a pair of roster-based questions about the strengths and weaknesses of the team coming into the spring and which starters might have their spot in jeopardy next year. From there, they have a lengthy discussion about the situation and the state of the Penn State football program. If not "on the hot seat," what pressure should head coach James Franklin and his staff feel after two seasons below expectations?Bauer and T-Frank debate what another sub-par season would mean for Penn State's perception with a critical group of individuals. They also discuss how fans and media pressure don't affect college coaches the same way professional ones do. Finally, they wrap up the show with their picks for the underrated player to break out in 2022 and their way-too-early running back depth chart.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 223BWI Daily: Big week for Penn State hoops

Penn State basketball got an and-one of good news yesterday, and basketball reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to discuss it. He and host Thomas Frank Carr lay out the impact that Class of 2023 point guar Logan Imes can have before teasing out the threads of Myles Dread's return to the team. Finally, they give a quick preview of Penn State football's second open practice. The biggest news for hoops on Wednesday was the commitment of 2023 point guard Logan Imes. The 6-4 point guard from Indiana is friends with a fellow commit in '23, Braeden Shrewsberry, the son of head coach Micah Shrewsberry. Eckert gives his thoughts on what Imes brings to the Nittany Lions and what he can be in the Penn State offense under the elder Shrewsberry.Next, T-Frank asks about Imes' ranking. On3 does not rank the Zionsville point guard or its consensus ranking, which has raised some fans' concerns. So what is the disconnect? Eckert explains why that is and how that can change this year. Finally, they discuss Imes' profile as a basketball player. What are his strengths, and where does he need to improve? While Imes considers himself a creative basketball player, Eckert sees one area that has to improve before he steps on the court for the Nittany Lions in the future. After that, they move on to the news that senior guard Myles Dread is returning to Penn State for his extra year of COVID eligibility. How does his return affect the team? More importantly, will he be ready to contribute next fall after having surgery on a torn labrum in his shooting shoulder? T-Frank gives a very general timetable for recovery from such an injury and then asks Eckert what Dread can bring to the team if he's less than 100% during the season.Eckert looks at the roster and sees one key component missing that Dread can bring to the table. Aside from that, T-Frank points out that Dread just proved that he could be effective at less than his best. Finally, they consider the transfer portal and what Penn State has been able to bring to the program under Shrewsberry.Their last topic for the day is a quick preview of Penn State football's second open spring practice. So what are they expecting to see today? Also, what do they want to know from the post-practice interviews? Eckert and T-Frank give their thoughts on what burning questions they have for the second week of spring practice.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 222Recruiting Show: Recapping Baltimore Under Armour Camp

There were several notable Penn State recruiting prospects at the Under Armour camp in Baltimore on Sunday, and the BWI Daily Recruiting show was there to see them perform. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder was on-hand to see the Class of 2023 and beyond test and compete during the final weekend of March. So, they'll tell you the major news and observations that came out of the event on the show. They start with four-star linebacker Tony Rojas. He delivered some significant and rare news to Snyder on Sunday, which Snyder retells on the show. Next, they discuss the top schools in Rojas's recruitment and then give their thoughts on how he looked and performed at the camp. After that, Snyder breaks down what he saw from players positionally, starting with quarterbacks. The first two quarterbacks he mentions are Stone Saunders from Bishop McDevitt and Michael Van Buren from St. Frances Academy. So what did he see from them on a windy day? Next, Snyder explains how the weather hindered the camp, especially for the passing game. Finally, Pickel calls into question how useful recruiting camps are for evaluating quarterbacks. After discussing the tight ends and receivers at the camp, Pickel follows up with his thoughts on Penn State offensive line commit Anthony Donkoh's day. It was the first chance to see the four-star lineman up close for both Snyder and Pickel, who were impressed with how Donkoh rebounded from a slower start to the day. Next, Snyder explains where Penn State hopes that the Virginia native fits into their recruiting class. The most important and loaded group of the day was the defensive line. It's a stacked group in the region for the Class of 2023 and 2024, so Snyder goes through the names in the group, which includes edge Desmond Umeozulu, stand out defensive tackle of the day Sydir Mitchell, Congo native Joseph Mupoyi, and 2024 edge Dominic Nichols just to name a few. They filter through the other important Penn State targets that were on hand Sunday before getting to the other important news of the weekend. Four-star athlete Neeo Avery de-committed from the university on Sunday and was on hand to explain his decision to Pickel. Snyder and Pickel go through what happened and what comes next for Penn State and Avery. Finally, they discuss the players visiting Penn State over the last three days. Van Buren made his way to Happy Valley before camp, as did 2023 DB Amare Snowden. Monday, Tennessee native and four-star receiver Justin Brown made his way to campus. Lastly, Snyder runs down the newest commitments that the Nittany Lions sent out over the last few days. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 221BWI Daily: Catching up with four-star linebacker Abdul Carter

Penn State football is searching for linebackers with a thin roster for the 2022 season. But behind the scenes, four-star linebacker Abdul Carter is preparing to make an impact. The freshman-to-be sat down with host Thomas Frank Carr on the BWI Daily to talk about his game and preparation for the future. The senior from La Salle College high school is the 128th player in the nation, according to On3, and was a force his senior season. So that's where T-Frank begins the interview, asking Carter about how he thinks his final year of high school football turned out. From there, he turns his attention to the current Nittany Lions and asks Carter, who recently visited Penn State, what he thought of new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Carter gives a favorable impression of Diaz as a person and a coach. Next, T-Frank asks what sort of conversations Diaz and Carter have had, leading to Carter's thoughts about football and playing at Penn State. That becomes a theme of the day for Carter. After that, T-Frank dives into a conversation about Carter's game and what he saw on film from the Philadelphia-area native. Next, T-Frank explains to Carter how hard he thinks it is to play linebacker in modern football thanks to recent offensive innovations aimed at confusing linebackers. After that, he gives his opinion on just how good Carter was his senior year and asks what caused the lightbulb to come on for the promising junior his final year. Carter takes T-Frank through his football journey and explains what led to a breakout senior season and why he's such a versatile player on the field. Next, they discuss what sort of linebacker Carter is and what he wants to be. So how important is communication to Carter? What sort of skills is he developing to enhance his game? All of those conversations lead to Carter's intense love of football film. He explains that he watches all sorts of players in the NFL and tries to take the best parts of each of their games to make himself better. Who does he mention? Check out the interview so find out. Finally, they wrap up with some "get to know you" style questions. He starts with four-star linebacker Tony Rojas who recently visited Clemon after getting an offer from the Tigers. Does the Virginia native have a change of heart after the trip? Snyder and T-Frank discuss.Next, they dive into four-star athlete Neeo Avery's decommitment from Penn State. What happened with Avery and the Nittany Lions? Avery was at the UA Next event, even though he was not participating due to an injury and BWI spoke to him. Ep 219BWI Daily: Penn State visitors for March 26th & defensive hot boards with Ryan Snyder

Penn State football has a busy few days of recruiting in store as the BWI Daily Edition heads into the weekend. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the show to give you the important names and then update the top targets on defense for the Nittany Lions in 2023. Before that, they start with a Class of 2023 target that announced his top 5 today. Running back prospect Treyaun Webb put Penn State in the final group of schools along with South Carolina, Tennessee, Baylor, and Florida. So, where does Penn State stand on that list? First, Snyder tells T-Frank and then discusses the other standout target that makes up Penn State's priority players at running back. Can they take two? T-Frank doesn't think so, which he explains later in the show. Another critical factor for Webb is visiting Tennessee, which now has a very famous and dangerous NIL reputation. Will that sway his decision? T-Frank and Snyder discuss and then dig into the topic of NIL further. Finally, they discuss the potential ramifications of how NIL will shape the future and how it is changing things already. Next, they break down the list of players visiting Penn State this weekend. Some of the key names are 2024 quarterback prospect Michael Van Buren, 2025 athlete Aaron White, and 2023 running back prospect from Texas, Cameron Cook. Again, check out Snyder's article or watch the BWI Daily for the complete list. After that, they discuss Snyder's hot boards for the defensive class of 2023. T-Frank wants to start at defensive tackle because it's a deep and talented group that includes Florida prospects Derrick LeBlanc and John Walker, IMG product Will Norman, and prize of the 2023 class DeMatha Catholic's Jason Moore. Snyder breaks down where Penn State stands with those players, their recent activity, and a general sense he gets from them. From there, they discuss the equally deep defensive end class. T-Frank references the running back board when looking at the breadth and depth of the defensive line class this year and calls into question the idea of taking more than one runner. He also brings up two wildcards in the group to illustrate his point. Next, they move on to linebacker and discuss the clear top targets for the Nittany Lions, Ta'Mere Robinson, and Tony Rojas. After that, there are three clear-cut middle linebacker prospects to Snyder. How does all of that fit into Manny Diaz's picture on defense? T-Frank and Snyder have an in-depth conversation about the group and how things can change either way for Penn State's recruiting linebackers. Finally, they finish the show by discussing secondary recruits. T-Frank starts at safety because it ties in with the conversation about linebacker and brings up four-star prospect Cameron Seldon. How great of a fit is he in the current Penn State defense? Snyder goes even further to underscore Seldon's importance to the Nittany Lions. Safety is another deep group in general, but cornerback is not. See who and where the prospects for 2023 lie in that group. Ep 218BWI Daily: Weekly mailbag with Nate Bauer

The BWI Daily Edition is back with their weekly mailbag show. This week, Penn State football had big news with spring football starting, a new NIL collective launching, and Pro Day on Thursday. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer cover all of that and more thanks to questions submitted by the audience. They start and spend most of the time on the show, dedicated to discussing the Success With Honor NIL collective, launched on Wednesday. Bauer explains how this collective differentiates from other collectives that exist already and its intended goals.T-Frank and Bauer then discuss a wide range of aspects that affect the NIL landscape, including where it places Penn State in the landscape of college football, the impact of these collectives, and the ethics behind them. After that, Bauer and T-Frank shift to questions about the Penn State roster for this spring. First, where is Amin Vanover playing, and is that a good fit for him? T-Frank thinks that Penn State made the right decision for the defensive lineman in his placement this spring and explains why. Next, a listener wants to know how Penn State found itself with such a numbers crunch at offensive line and linebacker. Is that the case, though? Bauer and T-Frank have an extended conversation about linebacker, its evolving nature, and how Penn State views the position. Finally, they touch on the offensive line and the bad timing issues that led to a lack of depth this spring.Next, two BWI Lions Den members want to know about Penn State players making the transition to the NFL. Which less-notable player in Penn State's draft class has a chance of finding their way into Day 3? And what's the best fit for Jahan Dotson at the next level? First, Bauer gives his thoughts about what each of Eric Wilson, Derrick Tangelo, and Ellis Brooks brings to the table. After that, T-Frank provides a scouting report of each player and then describes the best system fit for Dotson in the NFL.Two of the final four questions deal with freshmen on the Penn State roster. First, when coaches talk about getting players "reps," what does that mean? Regarding players getting reps, is first-year receiver Kaden Saunders more important than five-star running back Nick Singleton in their first season? T-Frank and Bauer explain the first and then discuss the second question. Finally, one viewer wants to know how Penn State handles scouting the transfer portal. T-Frank and Bauer discuss how that has happened at Penn State before explaining that it might be changing due to staff additions. Penn State's five-star defensive end in the Class of 2022, Dani Dennis-Sutton, isn't on campus yet, but he's acting like it. He joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk to host Thomas Frank Carr about his game, life, and journey to becoming a Nittany Lion. He also discusses what he's doing to prepare himself for next season in today's episode.T-Frank starts by diving right into the question fans want to know most. Will Dennis-Sutton be ready to compete early in his career? This offseason, Penn State head coach James Franklin said as much when talking about the 6-5 McDonough high school star during National Signing Day. How did that make Dennis-Sutton feel? He and T-Frank discuss that, and then Dennis-Sutton shifts the focus to the entire class. Finally, T-Frank asks him what his goals are for the fall.Next, T-Frank asks Dennis-Sutton about his on-field skills, which are impressive. But it's not just the physical tools that the 255-pound pass rusher brings to the table; he's also adept at the technical aspects of his position. So, T-Frank asks him how he was keyed into their importance so early in his development. Finally, Dennis-Sutton talked about his journey to become the player he is today.Part of that journey involves the COVID-19 Pandemic. So how was losing a season of football beneficial for Dennis-Sutton? T-Frank asks him what happened and what he learned about himself through that trial. He also explains how one of the side effects of the pandemic was to spark what has become a life-long passion for Dennis-Sutton.They then transition back to talking about Dennis-Sutton's game, specifically his pass-rushing moves. After discussing which ones he thinks are his signature moves, they talk about former Penn State pass-rushers with similar skills.Dennis-Sutton has already signed his letter of intent, but T-Frank asks him what made him sure he wanted to play at Penn State. The high school senior gave a thoughtful answer and explained Penn State's "culture" means to him.Next, they talk about what Dennis-Sutton is doing this spring, and his list of activities is staggering. From track to lifting to working on Penn State's playbook, Dennis-Sutton is busy getting himself ready for life at Penn State. Finally, T-Frank asks the Mcdonough senior about his former teammate, defensive end Mason Robinson. Robinson is unranked by On3 but holds offers from Penn State, Virginia Tech, Pitt, and South Carolina, among others. Finally, they discuss Dennis-Sutton's hobbies and interests off the field.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 216Recruiting Show: Recapping March 18-20 visitors

Penn State football started spring practice on Monday, but their recruiting efforts were already in full swing last weekend. The BWI Daily Recruiting show looks at the key players that were on campus during spring ball, including a key 2023 recruit with a long saga with the Nittany Lions. To start, they quickly discussed what they saw in person at spring camp Monday. Players that stood out include receivers Mitchell Tinsley and Parker Washington and freshman Zane Durant. Finally, Pickel has some thoughts about the early enrollees at Penn State and how they looked next to their new teammates. After that, they transition to the transfer portal and two essential addition that Penn State would like to make on the defensive side of the ball. Grayson and Gabriel Murphy, already committed to UCLA, visited Happy Valley this weekend to see the program. How did the meeting go? Ryan Snyder spoke to sources and reported what he heard, including a tentative timeline of when to listen for a final decision. After wrapping up their thoughts on spring ball, they transition to recruiting for 2023. Tight end Andrew Rappleyea visited campus this weekend and spoke with Snyder about his time at Penn State. Snyder gives some details about what they discussed and then his thoughts on what might happen with the four-star tight end.Next, they move over to the defensive side of the ball to discuss the four-star defensive lineman from IMG Academy, Will Norman. Norman was on campus this weekend for a surprise visit. Snyder explained why it was a big get for Penn State to get him on campus and how that came about. It's a deep defensive line class in 2023, but Norman is a standout player. Where does he fit? Snyder explains. Finally, they look at the offensive line for another interior prospect for 2023 in Georgia Native and a top 100 player for On3, Nathan Efobi. The 6-4, 282-pound prospect visited campus this past weekend and left with a scholarship offer. It may seem like a curious move to offer more linemen with four already committed in the class, but Snyder explains why.Next, they look at the On3 300 for the Class of 2024, which came out on Monday. Penn State top target and Four-star athlete Quinton Martin, Penn State offensive line commit Cooper Cousins, and Roman Catholic receiver Tyseer Denmark are just three of the 12 Pennsylvania prospects in the initial 300 best players in the country. Finally, Pickel and Snyder discuss more news about upcoming Penn State visits for the spring.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 214BWI Daily: James Franklin press conference reactions from Beaver Stadium

Penn State football is back for 15 practices, and it starts today. Penn State head coach James Franklin started things off with his annual spring practice press conference, live and in-person for the first time in two seasons. So, the BWI Daily Edition takes to the road for today. Host Thomas Frank Carr, reporter Greg Pickel, and senior editor Nate Bauer give you their thoughts of Franklin's comments from the field at Beaver Stadium.Note: The BWI Live show will recap the entire day's events tonight at 8:30. Tune into YouTube and join the show!Last week, Bauer was curious to know what the "vibe" of the spring would be. Every year, he says there is a feel to the team or an overarching message that usually responds somehow to the previous season. Did Bauer find that vibe from Franklin? He did, and he tells you what he thinks the team's personality and mindset are, coming off of a 7-6 season.Next, they transition to the offensive line and the situation with the five men up front for the Nittany Lions on offense. Pickel explains what he heard from Franklin, including guard Saleem Wormley and bringing up some player positions and notable availabilities. Finally, he puts Franklin's comments into perspective over the eight years of his tenure as head coach. From there, they discuss the quarterback situation. Franklin was asked point-blank how he will handle the pressures of having a five-star quarterback on the bench. Bauer gives his thoughts on the situation and how he doesn't think it's accurate to say that Clifford has never had competition for his job.Naturally, that conversation leads to Franklin's comments about the other early-enrollee players in the Class of 2022 and the transfers that are on campus. Pickel gives his thoughts on both groups and how they should be perceived this spring. Finally, they discuss the changes on defense with new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. T-Frank breaks down what James Franklin said about Jonathan Sutherland's move to linebacker and how that changes the defense. Should Penn State fans be worried about only playing two linebackers? Bauer and T-Frank discuss.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 213BWI Daily: March 18-19 recruiting visitors with Ryan Snyder

Penn State recruiting hosts several key prospects this weekend, and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder has the names you need to know. He joins host Thomas Frank Carr for the week's final show, heading into a busy weekend for Penn State football. They discuss the critical visits this week that are arriving in Happy Valley on Friday. The most significant visit is from Penn State tight end target Andrew Rappleyea. The Michigan commit has opened his recruiting back up and will visit the Nittany Lions before taking more trips this spring. Snyder rewinds the tape on Rappleyea to this winter and explains the situation at tight end for the Nittany Lions and how things are different now. Can Penn State flip him? Snyder gives his thoughts.Next, they discuss three other names that cropped up this week, making their way to Penn State. Finally, Snyder fills you in on what you need to know about Florida defensive end Calvin Smith, Georgia defensive back Brice Pollock, and Harrisburg native receiver Rico Scott. After Snyder fills T-Frank in on the info about each player, T-Frank brings up an adjacent topic. Which Penn State prospects need to do well in track this spring? Again, Snyder gives an insightful answer. After that, they dig into Snyder's conversation with another 2023 prospect, linebacker Jordan Hall. The four-star IMG Academy defender spoke with Snyder earlier this week about his recruitment by Penn State and where other schools line up in his mind. T-Frank follows up with very positive impressions from Hall's highlight tape. He thinks he'd be a great fit at a critical position in Penn State's linebacker room.Next, they dive into the cornerback recruiting for this cycle. Is it a concern, an opportunity that hasn't many regional prospects, or a chance to go big at the position? Snyder gives his thoughts on the question. Finally, they wrap up by looking at the landscape of the 2023 class. Who is Penn State competing against for their top players? After thinking about it for a bit, Snyder comes up with two essential schools going head-to-head with the Nittany Lions for key targets this cycle.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 212BWI Daily: Sandy Barbour retires and Sam Sessoms enters transfer portal

Penn State athletics is moving into the future, searching for a new athletic director. That, and several other topics are the subject of the BWI Daily Edition today. Host Thomas Frank Carr and Senior Editor Nate Bauer, also take questions from the audience during their weekly mailbag segment on the show. They start with Barbour's announcement that she will be stepping down this summer and retiring. Bauer starts the conversation off by looking at the position she's vacating rather than the person. What should that position be in the future? Bauer and T-Frank give their thoughts. Next, T-Frank asks Nate to share his impressions of Barbour's tenure at Penn State. Finally, they discuss what comes next and where the university should look for its next athletic department leader. After that, they review former Penn State receiver Chris Godwin's contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Godwin signed a three-year, 60 million dollar extension earlier this week, and T-Frank gives his thoughts on the deal and how Godwin can come back from an ACL injury.Next, Bauer gives his thoughts on Sam Sessoms entering the transfer portal. Is this a good thing for both parties? Also, how should Penn State conduct itself in the portal? Next, Bauer breaks down what is ahead for the Nittany Lions basketball program. Finally, T-Frank asks a question that many fans might want to know but don't want to hear. How long until Penn State looks and acts like the program that head coach Micah Shrewsberry wants it to be instead of one that is just getting by?Finally, they dip into the mailbag for questions! The first question deals with former cornerbacks Keaton Ellis and Marquis Wilson. A BWI message board member wants to know what happened to them after promising starts ot their careers. T-Frank and Bauer discuss what happened to them and what their roles might be this upcoming season.Other topics they discuss include:-Which Penn State players could go in the first two rounds of the 2023 draft?-Which recruits are T-Frank and Bauer rooting for to break out?-Can Sean Clifford be "fixed?"-What was up with the third and fourth down playcalling last season?-Is Sandy Barbour being pushed out of her job?#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 211BWI Daily: The differences between Manny Diaz and Brent Pry

Penn State has a new defensive coordinator in 2022, but what does that mean for the Nittany Lions? Head coach James Franklin has said that he chose Diaz because of his skill calling defensive plays and his similarity to former coordinator Brent Pry. But no two coaches are the same, so what are the differences? Host Thomas Frank Carr looks at that today on the BWI Daily Edition. This video is a complimentary piece to T-Frank's article from earlier in the day, detailing the most significant structural difference between Pry and Diaz. Check out that article below.Article: https://bit.ly/3qafzIaInstead, T-Frank focuses on the secondary differences between Diaz and Pry during this episode of the Daily Edition. These stylistic quirks make each coach who they are, but many different factors can alter them each season.CoverageThe first, and most notable difference between the two coordinators, is the use of different coverage schemes. Of course, all defensive coordinators have crossover in terms of coverages used, but it's where they lean in their tendencies that make them different. T-Frank points to a very distinct split in this area between Penn State's former defensive boss and Diaz. Will that continue for Diaz in Happy Valley? T-Frank has his doubts and explains why.Because of Diaz's coverage preferences, the next difference from what Penn State fans know is the use of safeties by each coordinator. Pry and Diaz have had similar tendencies over time, but Diaz has recently diverted from that path and gone in a different direction. So how does he deploy those players? T-Frank explains how one part of coverage affects player usage in another.BlitzingPenn State is not necessarily getting a more aggressive play-caller in Manny Diaz, but T-Frank points to the 2021 season for the Miami Hurricanes as a blueprint for the Nittany Lions in 2022. So why does T-Frank think there is a similarity? He shows the differences last season and how that might affect the Nittany Lions next year. Finally, T-Frank explains different ways a defensive coordinator can dial up the pressure and what that means for the players involved.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 210Recruiting Show: Penn State hosts Cam Lenhardt, plus updated 2023 hot boards

This week, Penn State recruiting ended their "extended dead period," as recruiting insider Ryan Snyder called it. The BWI Daily Recruiting Show is here to give you the scoop on what's new and what names are important as the Nittany Lions get into the quiet recruiting period, where players can take visits to Happy Valley. Reporter Greg Pickel and Snyder run down the information of the week. Before getting to Penn State's first visitor of March, they start with the Nittany Lion's camp schedule for the summer. First, Snyder points out two key differences with Penn State's camp schedule and plan over the last several years. He explains why they're essential to understanding and then contextualizes the change. Next, he runs down the camp dates and the critical things to know about most of the schedule. After that, Pickel gives his thoughts on why it's crucial to have high school teams, not all-star teams at camps. From there, Snyder discusses Penn State's first visiting player for the Class of 2023 in March, Cameron Lenhardt. How did things go for the IMG Academy defensive end? Also, why was he up north this week? Finally, Snyder fills in those details from his conversation with the four-star edge rusher earlier in the week.Next, they get into the key players in the Class of 2023 on the offensive side of the ball. Snyder has paired down his hot boards for the class and shares the key names for this spring. They start at quarterback, and while Dante Moore is on the list, the key names are JJ Kolh out of Iowa and Marcus Stokes out of Florida. So what makes those players the standouts? Snyder fills in what he knows and gives some personal thoughts on what Mike Yurcich is looking for in a quarterback. From there, they discuss the Penn State running back board, which includes a recent offer in Scranton Prep's London Montgomery. He and Florida rusher Treyaun Webb seem to be the clear-cut favorites to land at Penn State, but Snyder throws in other national names. At tight end, there's really only one name to know. Michigan commit Andrew Rappleyea wants to visit other schools after changes on the Michigan staff, and Penn State is one of his destinations. From there, they head to receiver and start with Penn State's top targets. Four-star receivers Rodney Gallagher and Noah Rogers remain the teams' highest priority targets while others stay in the mix, like Dallastown's Kenny Johnson. Finally, they head to the offensive line room to see who else Penn State might fit into its already loaded class. Several interior players come up on the show and are possible targets despite Penn State's depth inside players. Yet, the top two players remaining are tackle prospects Samson Okunlola and Evan Link. Snyder explains why each, but especially Link, is key.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. He also asks what teams are in contention to upset the Nittany Lions in Detroit. Finally, Pickel gives his thought and stays firm in his prior beliefs about the Penn State wrestling team. From there, they switch gears and look at Penn State spring football, which is only a week away. Pickel is also curious to learn about redshirt freshman Khalil Dinkins. What role could he play next season? They discuss the offense's crispness to start the season and then focus on several key positions on the defensive side of the ball.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 207BWI Daily: PFF's Doug Kyed breaks down PSU's NFL Draft prospects

Penn State defensive end Arnold Ebiketie had a spectacular NFL Combine, drawing rave reviews for his performance in individual testing and on-field workouts. Doug Kyed of pff.com sat down with Ebiketie to get to know him a little better this week and now joins the BWI Daily Edition to share what he learned.Host Thomas Frank Carr starts with the article that Kyed wrote about Ebiketie, digging into his back story as a teenager who came to America from Cameroon in middle school. Then, after learning about how Ebiketie got started in football, they discuss his rise from an under-recruited defensive end to a highly-rated transfer from Temple.Kyed explains what got him interested in talking to Ebiketie in the first place. He was one of PFF's top-rated pass rushers last season, and his combine testing numbers backed up his production on the field. So, does that mean the 6-2 defensive end can crack the bottom of the first round? Kyed gives his thoughts. From there, he and T-Frank discuss the other top Nittany Lions at the combine. Then, they quickly touch on Jahan Dotson's day and where he fits into the discussion about first-round football players. It's here that Kyed says something fascinating that he heard from a scout in Indianapolis. How many locked-in first-round players are there? Kyed relays what he heard.Next, T-Frank gives his stump speech about safety Jaquan Brisker's talent. This draft season, brisker is not one of the clear-cut first-round talents, and T-Frank explains why that is a mistake. What's the reason? Kyed and T-Frank discuss the possible factors. Finally, they touch on something else Kyed wrote last week about a former Nittany Lions. This month, receiver Allen Robinson, who is a free agent, was at the combine. While that's rare, it's not the first time Robinson has attended the event in Indy. Kyed explains what he's heard about Robinson's interests and pursuits post-football that would explain why.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 206BWI Daily: Mailbag questions with Nate Bauer

Penn State football may be on spring break, but that doesn't mean there still isn't plenty to talk about this week. As always, Thursday means it's time for the BWI Daily Mailbag show with host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer. They start with Bauer's article on Wednesday about breakout candidates for the 2022 season. He limited the list to three, but he and T-Frank expound on the number of young players who could take a step forward in their second season on campus. One of the players that Bauer chose was sophomore safety, Jaylen Reed. Reed finished the season playing the boundary safety position, but things may be up in the air with the lack of numbers and depth.T-Frank explains the problems he sees and the positional fits at the position. He and Bauer go through some potential scenarios as well. After that, the pair get into the day's mailbag questions from viewers of the show. They start with a long conversation about the Penn State running back room. How will the depth chart shake out this spring, and will that cause any players to enter the portal? Will any player be able to make the jump to the NFL? T-Fank and Bauer talk about the importance of the position and what they see happening with the players involved. Next, they pay the same attention to the tight ends. Will any of them have a Mike Gesicki-like breakout season? Bauer thinks it could be possible. From there, they move to a question from a BWI message board member who wants to know which player would give the Penn State staff the greatest sense of relief by having a strong spring. T-Frank and Bauer give their thoughts, which turns into a conversation about the quarterback position. The offensive line is the next topic of conversation as one listener asks T-Frank to fix the right tackle position for Penn State. After spending a season pointing out the issue, T-Frank thinks there still is hope for improvement and explains why. They spend a few minutes talking about which positions underperformed last season before finishing the show discussing a fascinating question submitted to the show via Twitter."What are the chances that we see a pre-Iowa injury Sean Clifford?" -AHBauer and T-Frank discuss not just the answer to that question but what it means to see that play from the starting signal-caller again.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 204BWI Daily: Penn State strikes out in portal at defensive end

Penn State football got bad news this week from the transfer portal. Three of their top defensive end targets, Gabriel and Grayson Murphy of North Texas and Jordan Domineck of Gerogia Tech elected to go elsewhere. The twin pass rushers form North Texas chose UCLA as their transfer destination, while Domineck picked Arkansas over Penn State. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, breaks down the sting factor of each decision, then explains what else is out there. After that, he looks at the roster to try and find solutions to the Nittany Lion's problem at d-end.First, T-Frank discusses why Domineck isn't a massive loss for Penn State. He doesn't think that the one-time Yellowjacket was a great fit given Penn State's need at the position and Domineck's skillset. However, Domineck is an excellent example of the type of players left in the portal that Penn State has to choose from, so he dives into the numbers and shares what he knows about the senior defensive end. After wrapping up his thoughts on Domineck, T-Frank explains why the Murphy twins are the more considerable loss. He explains the confusion about their positional fit and why he thought they were more fit for Penn State, given the talent already on the roster. He points out critical metrics in the profile from PFF and how they could have helped fill a void.Next, T-Frank describes the game of TCU transfer Ochaun Mathis. The rising senior took a step back last season as Domineck did. But just like the Georiga Tech pass rusher, there's an explanation. First, he dives into the stable and unstable metrics of Mathis' data from PFF and then provides context with his film observations.Penn State is looking for a defensive end in the portal because of a deficiency of one key element in the room. The Nittany Lions aren't lacking quality talent, and T-Frank goes through the roster of players and how they can help the team. He explains why Adisa Isaac is so important but why he likely can't do it alone. To fix the problem, Penn State has one final solution. That player is freshman Dani Dennis-Sutton. T-Frank explains how he's come around to the idea of the freshman being a major factor next fall, despite his hesitance to place too much pressure on first-year players.Photos via Getty#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 205Recruiting Show: London Montgomery earns offer, Penn State's recruiting staff continues to grow

There are very few times that Penn State recruiting is truly quiet. Spring break is one of them. But, despite the slowdown inside the Lasch Building, the BWI Daily Recruiting Show still has plenty to discuss. Reporter Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder detail some news and notes on the show. They start with the news that Penn State offered a scholarship to four-star running back London Montgomery. The Scranton Prep running back was named to the On300 last week, but Snyder didn’t think the interest was fully there from the Nittany Lions at the time. He details his conversations with Montgomery and then explains the running back landscape in 2023 to try and glean some insight. The next topic of conversations deals with off-field personnel. Snyder reported yesterday that the team is hiring a new recruiting assistant. Who is Rashad Rich, and what does he do? Snyder gives his background information on the hire, first reported by footballscoop.com. The conversation quickly shifts away from Rich to Penn State as a whole. How much more do they plan to grow the staff? Snyder gives the target numbers for recruiting that he’s heard. He also gives the current staff size and compares it to the rest of the Big Ten.Next, they pass along information about movement in the transfer portal. Penn State’s efforts to land a defensive end in the portal took a hit this weekend. See which prospect or prospects chose a different university before Penn State could get them on campus for an official visit. Snyder then tells Pickel which portal targets are still lined up for a visit this spring.Lastly, they break down some position changes in the Class of 2023. Athlete Neeo Avery is moving from tight end to defensive end in his recruitment, leaving the door open for tight end prospect Andrew Rappleyea. Despite committing to Michigan a few months ago, Snyder explains how the door is still open for him to become a Nittany Lion.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
