Ep 303BWI Daily: Will Mike Yurcich's offense attack the middle of the field this season?
Every Thursday, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, and senior editor at Blue White Illustrated, Nate Bauer, discuss your questions on the BWI Mailbag show. They take questions from members of the Lions Den Message board and select questions from social media to find out what Penn State fans want to know each week. For example, this week, they discuss Mike Yurcich's play selection, the hype surrounding Nick Singleton, and more. They start with a question from YouTube about Mike Yurcich's offense. Will the offensive coordinator dial up more passes that target the middle of the field? T-Frank and Bauer discuss that question in depth. First, is the question fair and accurate? Did Yurcich shy away from that part of the field because of some part of the offense? They also discuss how receiver Parker Washington and tight ends Theo Johnson and Brenton Strange play into that conversation. Finally, can Yurcich force the ball over the middle of the field if quarterback Sean Clifford doesn't want to throw there? From there, they move on to a broader question. Who are the offensive and defensive players that will surprise fans this season? T-Frank and Baur discuss how few players fall through the cracks for attentive fans, but to the broader audience, some do. They bring up Zakee Wheatley and Tyler Elsdon on the defensive side of the ball, and T-Frank offers several candidates on the offensive side. Bauer thinks that Kaytron Allen, despite his standout work so far, is going under the radar thanks to the presence of five-star teammate Nick Singleton. Speaking of Singleton, is the hype getting too oversized for the freshman tailback? T-Frank and Bauer discuss what it would take for Singelton to have a successful season outside of becoming a superstar that takes every snap for the Nittany Lions. T-Frank and Nate explain what is hype and what are facts about his performance so far. They also discuss what they saw out of Penn State hoops at Tuesday's open practice, which players Penn State can't afford to lose, how to attack non-athletic quarterbacks, and more. Ep 302BWI Daily Two-A-Days: Previewing Penn State's quarterbacks
Penn State football starts training camp on August 1st, which means we're just days away from starting the 2022 season. Blue White Illustrated is beginning its season preview to prepare fans for the upcoming excitement. Host of the BWI Daily Edition Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer will break down each position heading into and through the start of training camp. Make sure to check out the articles at bluewhiteillustrated.com and the previews on the BWI Daily Edition. Today, Bauer and T-Frank start their season preview by discussing the Penn State quarterbacks. As if there'd be any other place to start. When it comes to the signal callers in Happy Valley, is the stock going up or down heading into 2022? Bauer thinks that the position and the offense are heading in a positive direction. He explains why starter Sean Clifford should be better than last season. While the show is about the quarterbacks, the conversations naturally spin to include the entire offense and the situation around whoever is under center. They examine offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich's role in this journey and how the rest of the players will affect PSU's passer. After that, they discuss the freshmen quarterbacks that enrolled this offseason. What should fans expect from five-star passer Drew Allar and three-star prospect Beau Pribula? Both T-Frank and Bauer see one clear path to success for the young players. There's one last player on the roster that the duo discusses. That's backup quarterback Christian Veilleux. If there is one, the second-year player is passed over in most conversations about the transition from Clifford. But both analysts believe that Veilleux has a part to play this season. Finally, Bauer and T-Frank give their closing thoughts on the quarterback room and how things will go with Clifford in the fall. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. With 19 recruits in the Class of 2023, Penn State's spots are winding down, but their efforts are not. There's still plenty of work to do on the way to a completed class this cycle, and the BWI Daily Recruiting Show returns to update Penn state fans on what's going on with the Nittany Lions. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder to discuss various topics, including a new RPM Pick by Snyder for the Nittany Lions.First, they start with the celebratory news for Penn State fans from last weekend. Then, Snyder explains how it all came together for Penn State and how confident the team was heading into the weekend. But is Penn State done at the position? Snyder discusses the chances that the team brings Kaveion Keys, a four-star linebacker from Virginia, to complement the duo. Currently, North Carolina and Penn State are neck-and-neck in the recruiting prediction machine. Snyder gives a timeline for Keys' commitment and what chances he sees for the Nittany Lions to land the 180th overall player.Next, they discuss the On3 rankings update that came out on Monday. Penn State has 11 nationally ranked players in the top 300, including a five-star player in Jven Williams and a consensus five-star lineman in Alex Birchmeier. Next, Pickel and Snyder discuss the other names that rose and fell in the rankings, including King Mack, Conrad Hussey, and Joey Schlaffer. They also examine why players like Tomarrion Parker fell during this update.Snyder put in a prediction for Penn State to land four-star defensive end Jalen Thompson out of Cass Tech this week. So what makes him think they'll land the 6-3 pass rusher? He explains what key factors made him pull the trigger. Finally, they discuss Elliot Washington's performance at the UA Future 50 and which players will visit Penn State for the Lasch Bash at the end of the month.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 300BWI Daily: Penn State well represented in On300 ranking update
Penn State did very well in the recent update of the On300 recruiting rankings. Film analyst Thomas Frank Carr breaks down who moved where and gives his thoughts on which players are in the right spots in the rankings. The Nittany Lions have 11 players in the On300 rankings, which were updated Monday morning. T-Frank starts by discussing the top players for Penn State in the rankings, between five-star linemen Jven Williams and newly minted five-star Alex Birchmeier. Next, he discusses which players moved up and down the rankings for the Nittany Lions. From there, he analyzes the players' movement and why he thinks the new rankings are appropriate. For example, he looked at cornerback Elliot Washington and TJ Parker to discover why they slid down the top-150 rankings and why Jameial Lyons and King Mack shot up the board. He also breaks down safety Conrad Hussey's ascent and discusses why London Montgomery may have slid out of the top 300 players nationally. Finally, he previews the open quarterback spot for the Nittany Lions, which doesn't have a clear answer. So, he searches for answers by examining two potential candidates' film. Those players are Iowa passer Jaxon Smolik and Michigan native Brady Drogosh. He explains what he sees from each player in terms of pros and cons.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 299BWI Daily: Previewing linebacker Ta'Mere Robinson's decision, Penn State wrestling update
Friday is an important day on the Penn State recruiting calendar. Four-star linebacker from Pittsburgh, Ta'Mere Robinson, makes his college decision between Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Miami shortly after 6:15. How will that decision play out? Recruiting reporter Greg Pickel and host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, preview the evening's event. First, however, they start with a recap of Tony Rojas' decision to join Penn State one day prior. A fellow four-star linebacker, Rojas chose Penn State over similar schools. So how significant was his recruitment? Pickel and T-Frank discuss. Next, they get into Robinson's preview and explain how confident Penn State fans should be in the outcome later in the evening. From there, T-Frank asks Greg to give him the short-list of players he'd choose to pursue for Penn State if he were in charge of recruiting. He mentions the most elusive prospect this month, offensive lineman Evan Link, who has gone silent in communication with media and coaches, according to Pickel. He also birngs up Virginia linebacker Kevion Keys and receiver Carmelo Taylor. T-Frank follows up that list by asking if Pickel thinks it's wise to hold off on taking a wide receiver in case the Nittany Lions can flip a commitment from a higher-ranked recruit. Both Pittsburgh-area receiver Rodney Gallagher and top-150 athlete Cameron Seldon are players that T-Frank would target first. Lastly, T-Frank brings up a question from Thursday's BWI Daily Mailbag show for Pickel to answer. A Lions Den member wants to know if four-star offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier will get a fifth-star from On3 and if any players in the class will jump from three to four-star profiles. Pickel chooses receiver Yazeed Haynes and explains why. Next, they shift their focus to Penn State wrestling. Head coach Cael Sanderson received a new contract this offseason. How does that impact the program's stability? How dominant can they become in the future? And how doe NIL add to that already sizable lead? Pickel and T-Frank discuss that at length before turning the conversation to NIL at Penn State and the lack of enthusiasm to contribute to football. From there, they take a quick look at the 2022 Nittany Lions for a preview of the season. Which underclassmen will take a step forward and jump up the depth chart? T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts. Finally, they close out the show discussing Bo Nickal's MMA career and a big moment coming up in the near future. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 298BWI Daily: Which Penn State training camp battles are most intriguing?
Penn State football is just over two weeks from the start of training camp, and Blue White Illustrated starts the season preview on the BWI Daily Mailbag show. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss questions submitted to the show from the Lions Den message board and social media. Bauer and T-Frank start the show with a rapid-fire question period about various Penn State football topics. For example, will a freshman crack the two-deep to start the season against Purdue? Also, will Penn State have more than two backs in the rotation throughout the year? Nick Singleton's impact on the running back room, how the roles on the team will break out, and how Penn State labels their running backs come up in the discussion. Another question that comes from a Penn State subscriber deals with Manny Diaz's defense. Will the Nittany Lions go after the quarterback more aggressively than they did last season under Brent Pry? T-Frank and Bauer discuss the role that pressure plays in Diaz's defense and how the defensive ends play determines how aggressive he needs to be. T-Frank also describes the differences between the two defensive minds and how sacks come in different ways from each coach. How do you build a national championship roster? That's the question a listener asks of the duo. Bauer broke down the class rankings for both Alabama and Georiga over the last four seasons to find the answer. With training camp a few weeks away, a viewer asks which training camp battles T-Frank and Bauer have their eyes on. Bauer discusses the third receiver in detail. Will Harrison Wallace, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, or Malick Meiga step up to take that job? T-Frank points to the secondary and wants to know who will grab the lion's share of snaps at field safety. Veteran Keaton Ellis must fend off ascending redshirt freshman Zakee Wheatley to maintain that starting role. Bauer and T-Frank take opposite sides of that debate. Ep 297BWI Daily: The top five most fun players to watch in the Class of 2023
Penn State football has 17 commits in the Class of 2023 and two high-profile players are making their decisions tomorrow. Will Tony Rojas or Ta'Mere Robinson join the ranks of Penn State's commits this cycle? Before those big decisions, host of the BWI Daily and film analyst for On3, Thomas Frank Carr, put together a list of the five most fun players to scout in this class. He's watched each player in detail over the last eight months and picked the players he enjoyed watching more than the rest. So what makes a player fun to scout? T-Frank explains what he looks for in a player, what traits or skills stand out to him on film, and why. His list includes offensive linemen Jven Williams and Alex Birchmeier, as well as defensive backs King Mack, Elliot Washington, and Dakaari Nelson. Finally, he gives you a sneak peek at what he's seen from Tony Rojas on film. Check out the show to see which one takes the top spot! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 296Recruiting Show: Previewing decisions for four-star linebackers Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson
It's a jam-packed week of recruiting for Penn State football, poised to add even more high-level talent to their Class of 2023. The BWI Daily Edition Recruiting Show reviews the past weekend in recruiting and previews the decision of both four-star linebackers Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson coming up later in the week.Host Greg Pickel starts with a quick review of London Montgomery's commitment on Monday evening. The standout runner from Scranton Prep chose Penn State after a deliberate recruiting process that came down to Boston College and the Nittany Lions. How did Montgomery feel about the decision? Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder spoke with the four-star running back this week and relates what he said. Finally, Snyder drops an interesting nugget about 2024 athlete Quinton Martin, a national talent from Pittsburgh. After that, Pickel transitions into a preview of Thursday and Friday. One of the nation's top linebackers, Tony Rojas, will make his college selection on Thursday evening. The list is down to Penn State, Clemson, and Georgia, with the Nittany Lions being the heavy favorite. But will Penn State land player 105 in the On3 consensus? Snyder has a pick and explains his confidence in his choice. The next player is a fellow four-star linebacker from Pittsburgh, Ta'Mere Robinson. Again, can Penn State land both of its top prospects? If so, they'll lock up the 8th, and the 9th ranked player at linebacker in consecutive days.Next, Pickel and Snyder discuss the camp that Snyder attended in Pittsburgh this past Sunday. First, he spoke to some of Penn State's top prospects, including Martin and Robinson. Then, he shares what news he gathered from the event. Finally, the duo discusses Penn State's situation at quarterback in the Class of 2023. Where do the Nittany Lions go after three-star passer Marcus Stokes decommitted from the program? Snyder brings up several names, including four-star quarterback Brady Drogosh, three-star passer Jaxon Smolik and Pierce Clarkson. He breaks down the situation with each player. Ep 295BWI Daily: Does Penn State need a quarterback in the Class of 2023?
On Thursday, Penn State football got bad news when the three-star quarterback Marcus Stokes flipped his commitment to Florida. So the question now is, do they need to replace him? That's what the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, tackles on today's show. There's a school of thought that Penn State doesn't need to grab a quarterback this year because they got two quality prospects in the Class of 2022. T-Frank thinks that it's a mistake to go down that path. He investigates the current quarterback situation at Penn State, the turbulent effect of the transfer portal, and the idea of getting a backup QB in the portal next offseason. T-Frank starts by explaining the theory with which he disagrees. Penn State recruited five-star quarterback Drew Allar and exciting local prospect Beau Pribula last season. So why would Penn State need a quarterback with the combination of high-profile talent and a 'gamer' last year? T-Frank pushes back on preconceived notions about talent evaluation and misconceptions about player development. Next, T-Frank points to real-world examples of how the transfer portal sapped the Nittany Lions of their quarterback depth in the last four offseasons. Finally, why settle? He debates the merits of lowering the floor of the quarterback room and creating a lack of competition, which led to last season's debacle in Iowa. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 293BWI Daily: Why we haven't seen the best of Mike Yurcich yet
Penn State fans can ask film analyst Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor, Nate Bauer, their weekly questions on the BWI Mailbag Show. Today they answer questions about Penn State's offense under Mike Yurcich heading into its second year, fixing the running game, how analysts play into the game-planning picture, and more. To submit your questions, look for the BWI Mailbag submission thread on the Lions Den message board. Not a member? Join right now for just one dollar and get 12 months of access! They start the show with a question about analysts and off-field assistants. Does Penn State now have enough analysts to be on a field comparable with the top teams in the country? If so, does that change anything on game day or in-game planning? Bauer and T-Frank discuss the merits of the thought and what that means for head coach James Franklin and his top assistants, Mike Yurcich and Manny Diaz. That conversation spins into a question about the Penn State offense in 2022. Can they get the rushing attack figured out? The viewer also wants to know how many yards Nick Singleton will rush for next fall. Bauer feels bullish on Singleton, and T-Frank feels the same about Yurcich. First, Bauer gives his reasons why and then T-Frank discusses why we haven't seen the best of Yurcich yet. They also field questions about the defensive line and how new additions will fare up front, the timeline for several first-year players who T-Frank predicts to redshirt, the future of non-revenue sports at Penn State, and much more. Ep 292BWI Daily: Nate Bauer discusses his exclusive interview with new Penn State AD Pat Kraft
Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft sat down last week for an exclusive interview with Blue White Illustrated. Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the show to discuss what they talked about and how he sees the first week under Kraft's leadership after that conversation. They'll also discuss the nuances of Penn State's athletic model, the future of NIL, a timeline for events at Penn State, and more. Host Thomas Frank Carr starts with Bauer's overall impressions of Kraft during their conversation. Did Kraft match his demeanor in his opening press conference? What fascinating insight did he pick up from a follow-up conversation? From there, Bauer brings up his article at Blue White Illustrated about Kraft's commitment to keeping Penn State's full complement of sports and what needs to happen for that future to come true. They'll also discuss how football fits into that picture and how Kraft can assist with the largest money-maker at Penn State while still having a broad athletic department. They'll also broach NIL with a similar frame of reference. Considering where Penn State is from a facilities standpoint, how can they also compete at NIL? Will focusing on all sports take away from football's ability to compete? Also, can Penn State gain momentum if head coach James Franklin doesn't have to be the leader in this conversation? They'll wrap up by discussing the future of athletics and if NIL has a long-term place in the conversation. Ep 291Recruiting Show: Commitment dates to monitor for top Penn State targets
Penn State football sits eighth in the country in the On3 Class rankings for 2023, heading into a critical stretch of commitments in July. The BWI Daily Recruiting show discusses the important news of the weekend and previews the month ahead. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder starts with the surprise that it was a quiet Fourth of July for Penn State recruiting. No players committed to the Nittany Lions over the holiday weekend, and the players that did plan on committing this week have moved their commitment dates to later in the month. Does that change this week? Snyder gives his thoughts and shares what details he knows about players' commitment plans. From there, they will discuss Carmelo Taylor, a speedy receiver from Virginia who is a part of the Nittany Lion's recruiting picture? Snyder and Pickel will break down where he fits in the Penn State pecking order and how Cameron Seldon plays into that picture. They'll also touch on Northeast (Philadelphia) offensive lineman Naquil Betrand, who released a top six earlier this week. After visiting the school last month, the former Colorado commit has Penn State in that group. What has Snyder heard about the offensive line class plans after Evan Link? He'll share what he knows. Next, they discuss the recruit names and commitment dates that are known. Ta'Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas have dates for later next week, while potential Oklahoma commit Derrick LeBlanc plans on making his announcement on the 28th. What about Treyaun Webb, London Montgomery, Evan Link, Jason Moore, and the rest of Penn State's top prospects? Snyder shares what he knows at this time. Finally, they'll discuss how Pennridge linebacker Phil Picciotti landed at Oklahoma. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 290BWI Daily: The future of college football after USC and UCLA join the Big Ten
News shattered the college sports world last night when the Big Ten announced that they accepted USC and UCLA from the Pac 12 starting in 2024. As a result, Penn State now finds itself in the middle of a budding super conference poised to take over college athletics. On Friday's BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder discuss that and Penn State's Class of 2023. Could they find themselves in the top ten? They start with the news last night that UCS and UCLA will join Penn State in the Big Ten. How does this move change the landscape of college football? Snyder and T-Frank discuss that at length. They also look forward to what and who is next. Will the ACC survive this distillation of athletic conferences? What other programs from the Pac 12 could join the southern California schools? Previously, Snyder said that Penn State's Class of 2023 didn't have a great chance of landing in the top ten once the cycle was completed. Does he feel that way now? There are still plenty of hills to climb, but Snyder sees a path to that reality. He cites that the team already amassed a quality number of four-star players and can realistically add more. Can they land defensive tackles Derrick LeBlanc and Jason Moore? What about offensive tackle Evan Link? Do they have a chance with four-star corner Elliot Washington? The list includes other familiar names like Tony Rojas, Ta'Mere Robinson and Cam Seldon. Finally, Snyder gives his thoughts on the reality of that vision coming together. Lastly, T-Frank and Snyder discuss the running back situation for 2023. With all that talent left on the board, can Penn State add Treyaun Webb and London Montgomery? They break down how that could play out. Ep 289BWI Daily: Can Penn State use Nick Singleton the way they did Saquon Barkley?
Each week senior editor Nate Bauer and football film analyst Thomas Frank Carr sit down to answer your Penn State questions on the BWI Daily Edition mailbag show. Today they answer questions about head strength coach Chuck Losey, how to best use freshman running back Nick Singleton, and more. If you'd like to answers your questions on the BWI Daily, join for just one dollar and access the Lions Den Message board. T-Frank and Bauer start the show by discussing the annual Lift for Life event, which is back and open to the public for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the event, its meaning, and how fans can get a unique view into the program, which they usually don't. From there, they dive into the mailbag to discuss questions from the audience. First, they start with a question about the quarterback situation. Will Penn State have a reliable backup to starter Sean Clifford this year? Bauer recently spoke to offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and relays his conversation with Yurcich on this topic. Does Bauer think the team will have a quality player to push Clifford? T-Frank follows up with his thoughts on the topic. Next, a viewer asks if there's a difference with new strength coach Chuck Losey leading the team in the athletic development department. Next, Bauer and T-Frank discuss some of the natural differences when transitioning between leadership, even if they believe the same things. Finally, a question about four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore steers them into the realm of recruiting conversation. A viewer asks if there is one uncommitted player in the Class of 2023 that is most important or valuable. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the meaning of the word "important" and "valuable" and debate the different applications of those words. Does the question refer to the balance of the class? The value of the position? Or the long-term health of the roster? Bauer and T-Frank dissect Penn State's needs from multiple angles. Next, a message board member wants to know about running back Nick Singleton. Can Penn State use Singleton in more ways than as just a runner? What about throwing him passes in the flat? Bauer dives into what sort of hill Singleton must climb mentally to earn that role first. He also references freshman teammate Kaytron Allen as a player who is mentally ahead of the curve thanks to his IMG Academy training. Once that baseline is established, T-Frank counters the question by describing how Penn State used running back Saquon Barkley in a more valuable way than passes into the flat. Next, he explains what types of targets are helpful and how the team can put Singleton into a similarly advantageous situation. Ep 288BWI Daily: Projected Penn State Class of 2023 after official visit period
The official visit period is over for the summer in college football recruiting, which means that most players will make their decisions in the coming month. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, breaks down what we know and don't know heading into July. Then, he uses that information to build a mock class. He starts with the news on Wednesday that sets some projections on edge. Four-star safety King Mack from St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida pushed back his commitment decision by a day. The feisty safety will now decide on Thursday at noon. Will Penn State be the pick? T-Frank saves his thoughts on that for later in the show. Finally, he reviews the players that have a prediction for Penn State football or are reportedly secured for the Nittany Lions. Those players are Mack, four-star linebackers Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson, along with running back Treyaun Webb. From there, he reviews the offensive class and projects how many spots remain on that ball's side. He thinks the Nittany Lions should only take one runner in this cycle. So will it be Webb or Scranton Prep's London Montgomery? At wide receiver, he could see the Nittany Lions taking another player but should they? The team can also add two more offensive linemen. Defensively, he looks at the committed players and sees that the front seven is locked in, save for two positions. The board seems clearly down to one more defensive tackle. Will it be Florida defender Derrick LeBlanc or will DeMatha's Jason Moore be the choice? The secondary situation is messy with the news that high-priority athlete Cam Seldon wants to play offense in college. How does that affect the safety board and the flexibility of the secondary? T-Frank also doesn't see a great fit to add at corner unless the Nittany Lions can land LeBlanc and teammate Ja'Keem Jackson. Finally, he presents the players he thinks will choose Penn State over the next month. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 287BWI Daily: Interview with the GM of Success with Honor, Jason Belzer
In the burgeoning world of name image and likeness, few things are well-known facts for fans. To help fill in some of those gaps, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, speaks to Jason Belzer, the founder of Student-Athlete NIL, the third-party company that manages Penn State's largest NIL collective, Success with Honor. In this nearly 30-minute interview, T-Frank and Belzer discuss how the collective currently operates, Belzer's role within the organization, some up-to-date information about the health of the collective, and more. T-Frank starts with the basics of Penn State's NIL situation. How do Belzer and his company fit into the picture with Success with Honor? Belzer explains the relationship between the two organizations and describes how he bridges the gap."So I'm the CEO of Student Athlete NIL. So in some ways, you can call me the GM of Success with Honor. That being said, Mark Toniatti, who is a donor, a longtime Penn State Alumni supporter, and on a lot of boards at the university, he is the CEO of Success with Honor. But we are kind of like the GM. So the relationship that you can kind of think about is that we are almost like a Learfield, similar to what Penn State uses for their MMR (multi-media right) rights, but we're focused on the NIL side," he told BWI.Where Penn State stands in the NIL RaceBelzer paints a positive picture of the tangible work that Success with Honor has done with Penn State student-athletes. He cites that they've been busy since the introduction of the collective in February,"Penn State has more going on from a NIL perspective and a collective perspective, and really 95% of the school's out there, which is I think, a testament to some of this work we've done but also the support of the Penn State community and the money that we've been able to raise to work with student-athletes."However, those figures are not indicative of the whole picture. While Success with Honor has been busy connecting players and fans at events, the money generated so far is behind."We launched a collective with about a half a million in the bank. Since then, we've raised an additional million dollars plus, which is pretty, pretty substantial. But over the long run, for Penn State to want to compete at the level that it does, we need to continue to drive money into the collective."Belzer and T-Frank also discussed the current marketplace for NIL and roster management that has been discussed this summer. He gives the minimum dollar figure on what a team like Penn State would need to be competitive and what they would need to be ahead of the competition. Ep 286BWI Daily: Explaining Manny Diaz's scheme in simple terms
Penn State senior editor Nate Bauer and film analyst Thomas Frank Carr are back for their weekly mailbag show on the BWI Daily Edition. They discuss several topics, including how complex or straightforward new defensive coordiantor Manny Diaz's scheme is. They also field questions about the Class of 2022 and 2023, including which players, like freshman Kaden Saunders, could play early. They start the show with news and notes about the Penn State football team Nate Bauer gathered this week. Then, he gives some broad details about what he learned and directs listeners to check out his articles, which you can find below. From there, they get into the mailbag to discover what Penn State fans want to know on the second-to-last Thursday in June. The first question deals with the Nittany Lion's first game of the season against Purdue. The line sits at -3 entering the game, and one BWI member wants to know if that's too low or if Penn State is that bad? Bauer and T-Frank see it differently but go into the factors keeping Penn State and Purdue within a field goal. After a discussion about basketball recruiting, they switch to the topic of defensive ends. One viewer asks Bauer and T-Frank if new commit TJ Parker and five-star defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton have a higher floor than current starter Nick Tarburton. T-Frank describes the similarities between all three players and then gets into one quirk that both Dennis-Sutton and Parker share. Manny Diaz is bringing a new scheme to Penn State, and the Nittany Lions seem to be in a good position with two top-150 linebacker recruits who plan on making their college decisions shortly. So, a viewer writes to ask, which scheme is easier to pick up for a player transitioning to linebacker, Diaz, or former DC Brent Pry? T-Frank clarifies some points about what position four-star prospects Ta'Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas play before asking Bauer to take the question. Bauer recently interviewed Diaz for BWI, and he got a first-hand account of the nature of his scheme. Bauer relates what Diaz told him and then asks T-Frank to add context to what he's relaying. Then, T-Frank and Bauer discuss what that means for the players in the system. The next viewer asks if Penn State will have a reliable deep threat in 2022. If so, is freshman Kaden Saunders that guy? What about fellow newcomer Omari Evans? T-Frank and Bauer discuss the viable deep threat options in the offense and give their verdict. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 285BWI Daily: Exclusive interview with starting Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs
Penn State starting linebacker Curtis Jacobs joins the BWI Daily Edition for an exclusive interview. He sits down with host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss his path to his new position, how he sees the game of football, and what makes him tick. Be sure to check out both installments of the interview.T-Frank starts out by taking Jacobs back to Penn State's bowl game performance against Arkansas. Like several of his teammates, he played a new position filling in for a veteran who had opted out of the game for the NFL Draft. How comfortable was he at WILL linebacker after practicing for a month? Jacobs said it wasn't about playing the run in the tackle box but about playing every down for the defense."Honestly, the best part of it was being able to play third down. I feel like that was a big part of my game I didn't get to show because of personnel, and I felt like that was a really big opportunity for me," he saidJacobs came off the field in favor of slot corner DaeQuan Hardy in obvious passing situations throughout last season. But how was playing a new position? Jacobs says it wasn't about playing in a new spot but keeping the same trust in his teammates,"My comfort comes from just being able to trust my teammates and I had full trust in my teammates. I would say I felt pretty comfortable, and now I'm just running with it. I feel like I've hit the ground running, and I feel like I'm in for a big season next year."Jacobs will take on the playmaking role of Will linebacker full-time next season in Manny Diaz's new scheme. He discusses the nature of that system with T-Frank, how he enjoys playing for Diaz, and how aggressive the team will be.They also discuss his fellow linebackers, Kobe King and Tyle Elsdon, who are battling for the starting middle linebacker position. Jacobs shares what he's seen from them in that endeavor and tells T-Frank a bit about who they are as people.T-Frank also brings up the topic of size and linebackers in college football. Jacobs plans on playing at 227 pounds this year, which is typically lighter than traditional linebackers. However, this isn't new to Jacobs, as this is how linebackers play in college football. T-Frank wants to know how Jacobs feels about the situation and if he thinks his style of play will hold up to the physicality of the Big Ten. Jacobs points to factors beyond weight that mean more in how a player performs on the field. They also discuss the differences between his old position (SAM Linebacker) and his new one. Jacobs tells T-Frank that he actually misses one part of his old job. Other topics of conversation include modern ways that teams are attacking linebackers. Jacobs tells T-Frank that his belief that linebackers "can't be right" because of RPO passes isn't accurate. He explains what he does to sniff out plays in that situation. Finally, they discuss Jacobs' interests off the field and what makes him tick as a person.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 284Recruiting Show: Penn State sets itself up for July surge following massive recruiting weekend
While it was quiet on a commitment from Penn State football recruiting Sunday and Monday, that doesn’t mean that their official visit weekend wasn’t a success. BWI’s insider has the scoop for you.The linebacker duo weren’t the only key players visiting the Nittany Lions though. Snyder gives the latest update on four-star defensive tackle Derrick LeBlanc and his teammate cornerback Ja’Keem Jackson. Ep 283BWI Daily: What makes a good football player according to Penn State football players
Penn State football hosted several important recruits for their official visits over the weekend, but so far, it's been a quiet start to the week. Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, reviews what we know so far about how Penn State's efforts went from the weekend. From there, he shifts topics to talk about the second-year players on the current roster whom he spoke with earlier this year. The BWI Daily Edition previewed a critical weekend on Friday where many of Penn State's top prospects, like linebackers Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson, were on campus. He reviews what he and insider Ryan Snyder expected from the weekend, which isn't what we've gotten so far. Despite that, there's some positivity from Penn State commits online, which he reviews. To get more intel on how things went, check out Snyder's conversations with Robinson, his Q&A with tackle Evan Link, and more. After that, he puts recruiting news down for the day and gets into the show's main topic for Monday. After speaking with several of Penn State's second-year defensive players, he found an interesting theme that emerged from his conversations. When asking linebacker Jamari Buddin, safety Zakee Wheatley and defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg what the most important thing they were working on this offseason was, it wasn't anything physical. Instead, all three discussed what they were learning. He dives into what that means and what football players focus on to become better at their sport. Ep 282BWI Daily: Is Penn State on the verge of landing two more commitments?
Penn State football enters a key recruiting weekend with eight high-priority official visits on Friday and Saturday. It's a weekend that could produce more than one commitment for the program. To break it all down, BWI recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr to preview all the top prospects expected on campus this weekend, including Ta'Mere Robinson, Tony Rojas, London Montgomery, King Mack and many others.Snyder and T-Frank also discuss the latest surrounding three-star DL Tyriq Blanding. Ep 281BWI Daily: Predicting roster holes and NIL discussion on mailbag show
Blue White Illustrated senior editor Nate Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr take questions from the audience for their weekly mailbag show. Today they discuss the name image and likeness questions submitted by message board members at bluewhiteillustrated.com. In this video, both questions deal with NIL. First, the duo is asked which unexpected Big Ten school might compete with Ohio State atop the Big Ten in terms of NIL money spent. Bauer suggests that Michigan State and head coach Mel Tucker as the team to keep an eye on. Next, T-Frank brings up Maryland as a school with possible ties to large donors that can make waves. From there, they discuss the current ruleless landscape of college football with NIL. The viewer wants to know what conference or governing body can pass rules to reign the spending and even the playing field for each school. Both men agree that the US Congress will have to step in and make a ruling about the situation. If they were to do that, it would likely lead to an NFL-like model in college sports, complete with a labor union and a salary cap. The only way around the issue would be through anti-trust laws and legislation. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 280BWI Daily: Previewing a potential Penn State commitment this weekend

Three-star defensive tackle Tyriq Blanding announced that he'd be choosing his school on June 18th, which is Saturday. Snyder placed a pick for Penn State after the announcement. So, T-Frank reacts to that news on the show and gives his thoughts on the 6-1 defensive tackle. While that recruiting news deals with the immediate future of Penn State, the next topic on the show deals with the past, present, and future. Monday, T-Frank wrote an article about the evolution of the receiver prototype at the college and NFL levels. He gives an overview of that article on the show and explains in detail what is fueling the revolution. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 274Recruiting Show: Whiteout Camp fallout & official visit reactions
Last weekend, Penn State's two camps brought hundreds of prospects through campus, including some that left with a scholarship offer from the school. The BWI Daily Edition: Recruiting Show recaps the weekend, tracks the fallout from the event, and gets fans caught up on all the week's important news.Host Greg Pickel starts with the significant takeaways from insider Ryan Snyder about the Whiteout camp on Saturday. Then, Snyder gives his impressions of the event, who stood out, and what he noticed during the event. One of the biggest takeaways for Snyder was that there weren't more high-level prospects at the event. It's not a problem unique to Penn State but has been a growing trend around the country. Snyder explains what he thinks is going on and why this trend isn't good for either side. From there, he discusses the only Class of 2023 player to get an offer from the Whiteout camp, receiver Yazeed Hayes. The 6-1 prospect ran a blazing 40-yard dash and was a standout in the drills. Next, he recaps his conversation with Hayes and explains what comes next for the three-star receiver. Ep 273BWI Daily: Whiteout Camp observations & getting to know guard Landon Tengwall
It was a busy weekend to kick off the June recruiting calendar for Penn State football. The Nittany Lions hosted their Whiteout camp on Saturday, their biggest collection of elite talent at a camp this summer. They followed that up with over 200 prospects from the Classes of 2022 through 2025 on Sunday in the Elite Showcase I.At the Whiteout camp on Saturday, the Penn State had four of their five offensive line commits in 2023 and 2024 present for the event. Host and film analyst Thomas Frank Carr saw the one-on-one pass protection drills and has some thoughts on what he saw. Check out the video on our Youtube channel to see what he's talking about, but he gives a recap of the players involved. Surprisingly, the player that stood out the most was the youngest one of the group, four-star lineman Cooper Cousins. After wrapping up his thoughts on the weekend, T-Frank shifts his focus to the current state of the Penn State offensive line. Earlier this summer, the media got a chance to speak with the redshirt freshman class for the first time. In that group is left guard Landon Tengwall, the probable starter at his position for 2022. T-Frank has long admired Tengwall's game and was interested to see what makes him tick as a football player.T-Frank takes you through some of Tengwall's comments from the media session and explains what stood out to him about the guard's responses and demeanor.Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 272BWI Daily: Whiteout Camp preview with Ryan Snyder
Penn State recruiting kicks off June with their biggest camp weekend of the summer. The Whiteout Camp takes place Saturday, and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to tell you all about it. He and host Thomas Frank Carr go through the biggest names in attendance on Saturday and preview other important weekends this month. They also look at critical official visits, including this weekend's massively important Jason Moore visit.Snyder starts the show for those who don't follow recruiting closely by explaining what the Whiteout camp is, why teams do camps, and where they got their start. Then he lists off the critical players for the Class of 2023 that will attend on Saturday. Check out his article here for the complete list, including key names from 2024 and beyond.Next, he and T-Frank discuss the satellite camp the Penn State staff attended on Thursday. The BWI Daily edition was taped a day in advance to be sure to check the site for a recap of the events from Thursday. Snyder explains to T-Frank what satellite camps are and why teams attend them before previewing the camp in Detroit that head coach James Franklin spoke at yesterday. What was James Franklin's message to recruits at the Sound Mind Sound Body Ferris State Michigan Showcase?Next, T-Frank and Snyder discuss four-star defensive tackle Jason Moore's official visit, taking place this weekend. Snyder has called Moore one of the most important players in the Class of 2023 for Franklin. So, T-Frank asks him why. Why is Moore so crucial in a year with such depth at the defensive tackle position? Snyder explains that it's not just his position or talent that matters but something else. After further discussion about Moore and the defensive line group in 2023, T-Frank brings up a final topic that might be on the minds of Penn State football fans. The Class of 2023 started out with fanfare and promise. But after a few losses in the last month, including in-state players committing to other schools, should Penn State be worried about this class?T-Frank and Snyder discuss this topic from a big-picture perspective, where BWI's insider doesn't see a huge reason to worry. Next, they discuss it individually, where Snyder feels that NIL opportunities will cause Penn State to miss players they would typically get. That, along with the depth at defensive tackle, linebacker, and offensive line, should give Penn State fans hope.Either way, June and July will be a wild ride.#pennstate #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 270BWI Daily: Learning more about the Penn State offense with Seth Galina of PFF
Penn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich came to Penn State with a lot of fanfare surrounding his hire. The former Oklahoma State and Texas offensive coordinator drew praise for his ability to score points and create explosive plays for the offense. But unfortunately for Penn State fans, none of that came to pass in 2021 during his first season with the Nittany Lions. So to get a better sense of what Yurcich is as a play-caller and see what happened last season, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, brings PFF senior analyst Seth Galina on the show. Galina is a quarterback coach and evaluates offensive football for PFF. The two discuss quarterback play, the Penn State offense, Sean Clifford, and the game's evolution on the show. They start with a conversation about quarterback mechanics. In a recent interview on the Paydirt Podcast, Galina brought up rotational throwing, which T-Frank learned about from QB throwing coach Brad Maendler. He has more questions, the biggest of which is; how did we all miss this evolution? Next, they discuss the Penn State offense and its DNA under Yurcich. First, Galina explains how the passing game worked last year and why it didn't work better. One clue as to why the tight ends weren't more effective comes from the play of Clifford, "I did see a lot of what we call Y-Cross. Which is a crossing route 18-to-22 yards that crosses over the center of the field. Every team runs this play it's one of the biggest plays in college football right now. I think the issue is there with Clifford is you're talking about smaller-ish windows. I think he needs to be able to say, "I'm good enough to fit that ball in there."Next, he dives into how the scheme uses space to create matchups for the quarterback and how the play of that position changes the way coordinators can call games. Then T-Frank asks Galina if there's anything he would change about the offense. One thing that has bothered T-Frank over the last several seasons is the lack of outside-zone running from Penn State's coordinators. But, is that as big of a deal as T-Frank has made it out to be? Galina doesn't think so and explains why. Finally, they discuss the evolution of offensive football and the RPO. After describing what it is and what it does, Galina gives his thoughts on where the game is going. "I think we're still scratching the surface of RPOs. Again, it's all based on the referee. If the referee wants to start calling illegal man downfield, it changes everything. As long as they're told that we want to see offense, we're not even close to scratching the surface of RPOs."Check out the full interview to hear more about the Penn State offense and the game's evolution. Ep 269Recruiting Show: Penn State set for critical official visit this weekend
Penn State recruiting for May wraps up with the BWI Daily Edition Recruiting show. Host Greg Pickel and insider Ryan Snyder discuss the relevant topics of the last week and preview the critical information about upcoming events. They start with news about one of Penn State's top recruits in the Class of 2023, Jven Williams. The five-star interior lineman set a record and took home gold in two events this weekend during the PIAA state championship. Snyder recalls a moment after Williams' commitment when the junior lineman told him that this was a goal that he had for the spring. With his massive success this spring, Pickel wonders if he'll try to do both at Penn State. Next, they discuss the Big 33 game from his past weekend. Penn State had four players in the game, including one who took home the player of the game honor. While it's a positive sign, Snyder casts doubt on the future of the game thanks to factors outside the control of the event, including early enrollment. Finally, they discuss official visits for June. The Nittany Lions have a critical one to start the month in four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore. Penn State has the dreaded first visit during the period, so Snyder explains why it's important to set a good tone this upcoming weekend. He also details where Penn State is in the pecking order for Moore. They also discuss Florida linebacker Corey Lucius, who set his official visit for later this month. Snyder revisits the linebacker board to put the group in order heading into the month. Subscribe to Blue-White Illustrated on YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. It's coming down to crunch time for Penn State football with several top prospects as May draws to a close. The BWI Daily Edition Recruiting show focuses on two top prospects who have been in the news lately. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder and reporter Greg Pickel tackle that and other notable news items from the last week. They start with the news that four-star receiver Rodney Gallagher moved up his commitment date from July 4th to May 25th. This news comes just days after reports in the recruiting world surfaced that Gallagher was leaning towards committing to West Virginia. What's going on? Snyder explains what he's learned and what factors play into the Laurel Highlands receiver's situation. Also, where does Snyder think that Gallagher will choose Wednesday? He gives his thoughts. Next, they discuss another Penn State prospect that was supposedly a lock for the Nittany Lions in three-star defensive end Mason Robinson. But, like Gallagher, there were rumblings recently that Penn State's lead wasn't only slipping but that the defensive lineman planned on committing to Northwestern after a visit earlier this month. Pickel and Snyder discuss the situation there and dissect what has transpired since then. Finally, they wrap up with a discussion about elite prospect Kadyn Proctor, the 31st player in the nation, according to On3's player rankings. He's set an official visit to Penn State for the summer. Does Penn State have a chance? The program will host a media session on Wednesday for the 15 players from the class in their first official interviews as Nittany Lions. Ep 265BWI Daily: Rebuilding a contender; Looking at Penn State's 2019 defense to find answers
Penn State football has been a .500 team with embattled quarterback Sean Clifford at the helm for the past two seasons. However, many fans are frustrated that Clifford is the presumed starter heading into next Fall. So the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, is endeavoring to find out how the Nittany Lions can be successful next season by looking to the past. He’s examining the 2019 Penn State football team through PFF data to determine what they did to win ten games and threaten a College Football Playoff spot. The key to winning is surrounding quarterback Sean Clifford with a team that can help shoulder the load. Of course, a critical part of any winning team is a solid defense, and today, T-Frank looks at that side of the ball. However, it’s not a clean translation since the departure of former defensive coordinator Brent Pry. So while T-Frank starts in 2019 to give a sense of what that team was like, he quickly transitions to what Manny Diaz did at his zenith in Maimi. That means he looks instead to the 2018 Miami Hurricanes and the DNA of that defense under Diaz. T-Frank looks at the main features of the defense, critical stats, and overall team production to find common threads. Ep 256BWI Daily: Updating Penn State's depth chart after spring football
Which positions have the best battles shaping up for Penn State football in the Fall? Where are the weak points on the roster? To set the stage for the summer months, the BWI Daily Edition is looking at the Penn State depth chart coming out of spring practice. Greg Pickel watched all the film from the Blue-White Game and built a depth chart based on what he saw during the scrimmage. He joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss which positions need reinforcements over the summer. Pickel and T-Frank go through the roster position by position, starting with quarterback. Then, they cycle through the offense before heading to the other side of the line of scrimmage to see if anyone made a move on the Penn State defense. Key spots of interest include running back, receiver, linebacker, and safety. T-Frank also draws attention to the secondary, where good players might have a limited role thanks to depth and numbers.
