Fitz and Snyder discuss the variables that led to his termination and look at recent news, but also the big picture of his time at Penn State. Ep 452Breaking news recap: Penn State fires Taylor Stubblefield, lands Dante Cephas
Penn State football had a major shakeup at receiver on Sunday night when the team parted ways with coach Taylor Stubblefield. To make sense of all that information, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior Editor Nate Bauer discuss the events and how it affects the team. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you never miss any breaking news. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKFirst, they start with the news that Penn State landed Cephas. The team had been hotly after receivers in the transfer portal but had yet to find success despite those efforts. That changed on Sunday night when Cephas committed to the Nittany Lions despite some enrollment challenges that will cause him to enroll this spring. https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/penn-state-adds-top-transfer-portal-target-in-wr-dante-cephas/Bauer and T-Frank discuss Cephas's impact on the roster and how important it was for Penn State to get on the board at that position. So is Cephas' commitment linked to Stubblefield's firing? Bauer and T-Frank discuss the larger picture at the receiver position and how the short-term situation has less to do with his departure than the problems on the roster and recruiting trail. Bauer and T-Frank discuss what those issues were. Finally, they round back to Cephas, and T-Frank gives some more observations on the former Zips final season in Akron to give fans an idea about what he brings to the roster. Ep 446BWI Live: In era of transfers, Penn State winning in roster retention
Penn State football season never ends despite the 2022 season ending a week ago. Now, the team is in the thick of the transfer portal window, trying to secure the talent for next year's run at a Big Ten Championship and beyond. The BWI Live show will discuss the latest news on YouTube to get fans up-to-date on the latest roster moves at 8 pm. Join the show and ask your questions of host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKThe biggest news this weekend is that defensive end Adisa Isaac will return to Penn State next season. According to PFF, the redshirt junior defensive end put together a bounce-back season for the Nittany Lions with 36 pressures, four sacks, and eight quarterback hits. So what does his presence on the roster mean for the defense? And what does he hope to get out of returning to Manny Diaz's scheme? The panel of experts will discuss that and more. But Isaac's return isn't the only good news for Penn State this week. That's because defensive tackle D'Von Ellies followed up behind his teammate on Monday with the news that he'll also be returning. Penn State's search for a defensive tackle in the transfer portal has been slow, so the trio will discuss how Ellies can impact the depth chart next year. Finally, one player isn't coming back next year. Right tackle Bryce Effner decided to step away from football after multiple injuries during his college career. Penn State has been looking for tackles in the portal and in recruiting, so how does Effner's absence affect the team next year? T-Frank and Bauer will discuss how that position will shake out next spring. Lastly, they'll look at how Penn State has been able to retain critical players from both the NFL and leaving via the transfer portal. What are the factors driving players to return and not leave? Is this a sign that something special is brewing in Happy Valley? Despite that success, the portal hasn't been kind to the Nittany Lions' efforts at bringing in talent. They've lost out on several top targets, including Monday, when two players announced that they were transferring to other schools. Penn State football got a lot of good news in player retention this weekend. Join BWI Live at 8 pm to discuss who's returning to Penn State. Finally, they'll discuss the national championship game and the notion that you need an elite quarterback to make the college football playoff. Ep 445BWI Daily: Penn State adapting to new portal window
The glow of the 2023 Rose Bowl hasn't left yet, and the Penn State football staff is already hard at work securing the next round of Nittany Lions. There are several different avenues of player acquisition this time of year. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, Sean Fitz and Thomas Frank Carr discuss the transfer portal, recruiting in 2023, and previewing the next wave of 2024 recruiting. Don't miss the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube by subscribing to the channel. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKDespite their "signing day draft" last month, Penn State is still pursuing players in the class of 2023. The main name to know is Chimdy Onoh, a four-star offensive tackle from Dundalk, MD. The former Old Dominion commit opened up his recruitment right before the early signing day and has extended his recruitment into February. He recently named new top-four schools. So, where does Penn State stand in that lineup? Fitz discusses the outlook and what the Nittany Lions would get if they could secure his services. Next up are junior days. The significance of these events has changed in recent years, so Fitz and T-Frank discuss what they are and how they're used. Fitz also looks back at the list of players that attended Junior Day last year and notices an important trend. Now that Penn State has secured a high-visibility win in the Rose Bowl, does that change the level of players they can attract to such an event? Is that a real-world example of momentum at work? Fitz has his doubts and explains how that's probably not the case. Next, they dive into the hectic world of the transfer portal. Thanks to a new NCAA rule, there has been an acceleration on the timeline of transfer portal recruiting, which Fitz outlines. Next, he and T-Frank discuss the players that visited Penn State this week and which players fans should focus on. From there, they break portal recruiting down by position and look at Penn State's areas of need and some potential weak spots that fans may think the team needs to address. They also discuss Devin Carter, who committed to the program on Monday. Lastly, they preview the high school All-Star games that started this week. Penn State offensive line commit Jven Williams is at the All-America Bowl this week, so they discuss the meaning and position of high school all-star games. They also explain how they view these events to give fans some context on what to take from them. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join the Blue White Illustrated Hoops show as Nate Bauer and Thomas Frank Carr discuss both games. Make sure to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated podcast feed and leave a comment on the show! T-Frank and Bauer discuss the critical components that went into the defeat in a game that featured scoring runs by both teams throughout the game. What contributed to that and in what aspects did Penn State fall short during the game? They'll discuss that and which players need to step up now that there's a clearly defined strategy for defending the offense. After wrapping up the discussion on Michigan, they turn ahead to preview the showdown with Purdue at the Palestra. It's a game for Penn State where the venue is as much the story as the opponent. So how will the home court be for the Nittany Lions against the top team in the country? Bauer has been to each of the last two games in Philly and explains to T-Frank the environment and how it could affect the game. Can Penn State get a home-court advantage? They'll discuss that and how the crowd could specifically affect Purdue. After wrapping up their discussion on the venue, Bauer and T-Frank get to the game. Bauer breaks down what he's seen from Purdue and provides context with some stats he found to back up his observations. Then, they discuss Penn State's three-point shooting skills and how that can play into the game, and how turnovers shouldn't be a factor. Finally, with a game that amounts to a White Out game at Beaver Stadium, how will this affect recruiting? Bauer details the players that he's confirmed plan to attend the game and how important they are to Penn State. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 441BWI Live: Penn State gets Rose Bowl win, Clifford gets his swan song
Penn State and Utah played a closely-contested game on Monday night in the 2023 Rose Bowl. If the Nittany Lions proved one thing, it's that they have a dominant running game. Freshman Nicholas Singleton broke off an 87-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to give the Nittany Lions a 21-14 lead. Singleton had only six carries by the time the decisive fourth quarter started, but he gained 120 yards on those six runs and scored two touchdowns. The budding superstar showed speed, power, and vision during the game in a breakout performance reminiscent of former Nittany Lions rusher Saquon Barkley. However, the turning point of the game was the next drive when Utah quarterback Cam Rising exited the game with a knee injury after a first-down scramble where he took a hard hit from three Penn State defenders. The game broke open on the first play of the fourth quarter when KeAndre Lambert Smith broke off an 88-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Sean Clifford. Clifford, in his swan song, was impeccable. The sixth-year senior exploded during the game for 242 yards and two touchdowns by the time Lambert-Smith hauled in his touchdown. More impressively, Clifford was hyper-efficient, completing 14 of 20 passes with several throwaways thanks to excellent coverage.Once Penn State went up by two scores, Utah had no answer without Rising. Backup quarterback Bryson Barnes threw a bad interception in the third quarter and took several sacks that ended drives. Penn State wins its first Rose Bowl since 1994, and head coach James Franklin gets redemption in his second attempt after a loss to USC in 2016. The Nittany Lions finish the season 11-2, and fans that wanted one got a signature win for 2022. Ep 440BWI Daily: Interview with Alex Felkins, Penn State's newest kicker
Penn State football's first dip into the transfer portal didn't come at either of their most prominent and public positions. Instead of a wide receiver or a cornerback, special teams coach Stacy Collins struck first, signing Columbia kicker Alex Felkins as a preferred walk-on to the program. Felkins sits down for an exclusive interview with Blue White Illustrated's Sean Fitz to discuss his journey to Penn State and why he chose the Nittany Lions. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss any exclusive interviews. Penn State's kicking situation has been inconsistent for the past two years, with punter Jordan Stout filling all three special teams kicking roles in 2021 before Jake Pinegar retook his job in 2022 and finished the regular season 12-16 on field goals and 52-54 on extra points. With Pinegar moving on and highly-rated freshman Sander Sahaydak yet to earn any playing time, the Nittany Lions pounced quickly on Felkins, a two-time All-Ivy League honoree as a kicker. While Penn State's need for a kicker with experience is clear, what drew Felkins to Happy Valley? The Oklahoma native shares his reasons for picking the Nittany Lions with Fitz and describes his situation at Columbia. Felkins also described what sort of atmosphere he's looking for and how State College itself drew him to the program. Next, the duo discussed his time at Columbia and what adversity he faced while with the Lions. He tells Fitz about a significant injury he overcame and how grueling the process of returning to play was for him. He also describes his game and what he thinks he can bring to Penn State. The senior kicker also explains how Penn State got in contact with him, how his relationship with special team's coach Stacy Collins has developed, and what sort of competition or playing time he's expecting at Penn State next year. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKThey start with the biggest news coming out of the weekend. Penn State has secured an official visit for one key recruit left in the 2023 cycle. Fitz discusses which player will meet with Penn State before national signing day in February. Next, Snyder discusses why he's hesitant to put too much stock in official visit plans before the new year has started. They discuss how hard it is to land the top players remaining after signing day and how much competition Penn State will have for those players. Next, they briefly discuss the transfer portal and how Penn State is trying to address the receiver and cornerback positions. The rest of the show is dedicated to previewing the top players in the next class. While 2024 hasn't officially started, the next batch of recruiting targets is already taking shape. Fitz and Snyder go through each position and list the top players that Penn State may wish to land by this time next year. While some names, like Pittsburgh area athlete Quinton Martin and New England offensive lineman Liam Andrews, are apparent, some other positions are not. Fitz discusses why hearing names early for specific positions can be an issue. This list is comprehensive for the moment, but he says that more names will emerge as serious contenders over the next six months and which positions this applies to most. Additionally, they discuss which positions have an early lead on depth in the region compared to last season. Finally, they highlight the top players and debate which players, such as linebacker Aaron Chiles or wide receiver Elijah Moore, could grow out of their current positions. Will Penn State get run over again? T-Frank will give his thoughts about that group and then examine the matchups that stand out when Penn State has the football. He'll explain how Abdul Carter can change things for Penn State and how much growth the defense has experience in the months since then. Join Nate Bauer and Sean Fitz as they discuss all of that and what's going on in NIL right now. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss the show. Penn State's most significant drama from signing day was with four-star safety Conrad Hussey. The Florida native took official visits to Miami and Florida State this fall and didn't sign with the Nittany Lions on signing day. However, he didn't sign anywhere else as of the recording. Fitz discusses the situation briefly before moving on. Both Fitz and Bauer were at the signing day event held at the newly-renovated Lasch building complex on Wednesday. First, they give their impressions of the event before discussing the building itself. It was the first time that either reporter set foot in the newly renovated space, so they gave their impressions. Next, they discuss what Franklin had to say during his press conference in the afternoon. Ep 433BWI Live: Signing Day Recap Show
The bulk of Penn State's recruiting class for 2023 is in the books. After a long year of recruiting coverage on this class (that isn't over yet), the leading insiders in Penn State recruiting sit down to answer your questions. Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder discuss the Penn State recruiting class of 2023 on the BWI Daily Edition starting tonight at 8 pm. Host Thomas Frank Carr will take them through the class and discuss the individual players, position groups, and storylines that stand out. They'll also take your questions and interact with viewers live on the show. Next, they'll get into the developing story of the day; Conrad Hussey. The four-star safety committed to Penn State in the spring and has waivered on that commitment, visiting other schools this fall. From there, they'll dive into the class breakdown, starting in the secondary. They'll discuss how the Hussey situation impacts the group and what characteristics this group of defensive backs brings to Penn State. Next, they'll get to the stars of the class, the offensive line. Fitz and Snyder will give their thoughts on Alex Birchmeier and Jven Williams and then comment on what James Franklin said about the duo this afternoon. Next, they'll transition to the defensive side of the ball to discuss the linebacker trio of Tony Rojas, Ta'Mere Robinson and Kaveion Keys. Penn State head coach James Franklin outlined where he thinks that group will develop positionally, which Snyder and Fitz will discuss on the show. The next most interesting group has to be the tight ends. With three four-star talents and one jumbo athlete, what does the panel think of this group? Snyder and Fitz will weigh in on Andrew Rappleyea, Joey Schlaffer, and Mathias Barnwell's fit in the offense. After discussing the team's wins in the class, they'll flip the script and discuss the misses. Penn State needs several positions that head coach James Franklin outlined in his media day press conference. They'll look at those groups in several different ways. Lastly, they'll finish by discussing the "little guys" in the class at the offensive skill positions. Can receiver Carmelo Taylor and running backs London Montgomery and Cameron Wallace make an impact despite a lack of college-ready size? Fitz and Snyder will discuss that group before rounding out by discussing quarterback Jaxon Smolik. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Ep 432BWI Daily: Interview with Andrew Rappleyea, four-star Penn State tight end
Penn State's tight end recruiting in the 2023 class is nothing short of excellent. At one time, the Nittany Lions had four four-star players cycle through the room, with Mathias Barnwell, Neeo Avery, and Joey Schlaffer as the first three. But the last addition, Andrew Rappleyea, may yield the most results the earliest. Rappleyea sits down with Blue White Illustrated's Sean Fitz in an exclusive interview to discuss his transition to college, his comparisons to former New England prospect Pat Freiermuth, and his desire to play early in his career. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss any exclusive content. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKFitz starts the interview by asking Rappleyea to chronicle his journey to Penn State, starting with how he landed at Milton Academy in New England. Rappleyea takes Fitz through his journey from an under-recruited part of the country, through COVID, to his destination at Milton. He also describes when the light came on for him as a recruit and when he started to take football seriously. The switch to his new school opened up his recruitment and launched him from an unheard-of prospect to one of the top tight ends in the country. Rappleyea and Fitz talk about that journey from Rappleyea's perspective and how it made him a more confident person. They also discuss why defensive end Nick Tarburton likely decided to declare for the NFL draft and why the staff will miss his presence. Ep 430BWI Daily: Dakaari Nelson discusses his status with Penn State heading into signing day
Penn State football is working furiously to secure the Class of 2023 less than a week before signing day. One of the critical players in the class is four-star safety Dakaari Nelson. The 6-3, 195-pound safety prospect sat down with the BWI Daily Edition on Friday to discuss his commitment to Penn State. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss player interviews: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKAs fans who closely follow recruiting know, Nelson's status with the program felt rocky over the last several months. That's because the Alabama native agreed to visit other schools, including Ole Miss, during the season despite committing to Penn State in June. During his 22-minute conversation with T-Frank, he discussed why he wanted to take those visits and under what conditions he agreed to see those schools.Next, they discuss Nelson's reasons for committing to Penn State. It's a 14-hour drive to State College from Selma, which Nelson famously took to see the team play Rutgers in November of 2021. What drew him so far north? Next, Nelson discussed why he initially chose Penn State and what coaches influenced him the most. Finally, Nelson discusses his relationship with Anthony Poindexter and how Penn State plans to use him in the defense once he joins the program. From there, T-Frank helps fans get to know Nelson's game better by discussing his growth as a football player. Then, blue White Illustrated's film analyst discusses Nelson's time playing cornerback, and his transition to safety this season. Interestingly, defense wasn't even his first interest. Nelson describes his journey, starting at quarterback, through a COVID growth spurt, to where he is now. After discussing his game, T-Frank gets to know Nelson better with questions about his family, life, and hobbies outside of football. He also discusses his thoughts on his role in motivation and team mood during those two games. Next, Bauer discusses his thoughts on the team's formula to win. Is it as simple as making shots? Next, Shrewsberry discusses his philosophy and how the emphasis on three-point shots is incorrect. From there, they talk about the importance of finishing the non-conference strong, and Shrewsberry has a blunt assessment of how his team needs to prepare for the next three games. From there, Bauer asks about Penn State's star, Jalen Pickett. They discuss his play this season and, on the flip side, how Shrewsberry wants to get all of the freshmen involved in the game. The last topic of conversation centers around NIL. How is Penn State doing, and what should fans know about the situations surrounding the team? Shrewsberry doesn't hold back in his comments or information about how NIL has affected recruiting. He also ranks where Penn State stands in the Big Ten with NIL dollars and opportunity. Ep 427BWI Daily: Penn State's newest commit, Mason Robinson, joins the show
Penn State football picked up it's second commitment of the week when three-star defensive end Mason Robinson decommitted from the Northwestern Wildcats and committed to the Nittany Lions. A day after making the announcement, Robinson sits down with Thomas Frank Carr on the BWI Daily Edition to discuss his journey to Happy Valley and his "second chance" to play at a program like Penn State. Robinson starts the conversation by discussing how lucky he feels to have the opportunity to join Penn State's class of 2023 and how his family has helped him through the process. Next, he and T-Frank discuss the nature of recruiting, what it's taught Robinson about life, himself, and things he's realized along the way. They also discuss his recruiting timeline and how close things were this spring between Northwestern and Penn State when he originally chose the Wildcats. Robinson shares some conversations with Penn State head coach James Franklin and defensive line coach John Scott Jr. Next, they discuss how Robinson will fit into the defense and how the Nittany Lions play up front under defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Robinson gives T-Frank insight into how he'll fit at defensive end, including a nugget about how the team uses its linemen. Ep 425BWI Daily: Penn State portal and recruiting update | Rose Bowl opt outs | #WeAre
While the Penn State football team is hard at work preparing for the 2023 Rose Bowl, the coaching staff is hard at securing the next class of Nittany Lions. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer will discuss the important events that happened over the weekend, which includes a recruiting commitment. Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKAs always, Monday's show is live so join the program at 8 pm and ask your questions or get you comments on air! However, they have a bevy of topics to discuss. The first of which is the transfer portal. Penn State is sending out more offers each day but so far, no immediate activity from the Lions in terms of commitments. Top portal target Dante Cephas visited over the weekend, but so far, nothing has popped. Is Penn State weighing all options? Or is something else at play? Bauer and T-Frank will discuss and update fans with the most recent portal names and offers that make sense for the team. While the portal is still warming up, the first commitment of the December recruiting period popped up on Monday. Four-star defensive end Joseph Mupoyi chose the Nittany Lions after his official visit this weekend. T-Frank and Bauer will discuss the 6-4, 235-pound edge rusher and what he represents for the program. Next, they'll look at the recruiting board of top schools and compare where Penn State sits. Finally, Bauer and T-Frank will discuss where the team will likely finish and how this group corresponds to previous seasons. Next, they'll update fans on the news heading into the Rose Bowl. Both Utah and Penn State received news that they will be without their top receivers for the game in January over the weekend. They'll discuss this impact on the game and how each team can overcome losing critical cogs on both sides of the ball. Defensively, both teams will also be without top cover corners Joey Porter Jr. for Penn State and Clark Phillips III for Utah. Finally, they'll discuss Penn State basketball's big win over Illinois on Saturday. The Nittany Lions upset the Illini 74-59 to move to 7-3 on the year. How big of a win was it for the program, and what does it do for the team's season outlook? Bauer and T-Frank will discuss that and preview what's next for the Nittany Lions. Ep 423BWI Daily: Penn State is going HARD after receivers in the portal
Penn State's made its needs known early in the 2022 transfer portal season. The Nittany Lions have handed out several offers, most of which have been at the receiver position. Find out what the top targets are and which players are visiting campus or getting visits from coaches. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube so you never miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKHost Nate Bauer and Blue White Illustrated publisher Sean Fitz start the show by recapping the transfer that has left the Penn State program since the portal opened on Monday. The list is surprisingly short, considering how other programs around the country were hit this week. They go through the names and assess the situation from both sides, including how backup quarterback Christian Veilleux's absence affects the program. They also discuss how for some teams and players, the portal is a blessing that can move players on to better situations that suit their talent level or personal situation. Next, they discuss the receivers that Penn State offered out of the gates this week. Fitz is zeroing in on local prospects Dont'e Thornton and Dante Cephas. He also lists when those players might visit campus to see if they're a fit. One of them already has a date lined up. Finally, they examine the players who still need to decide about their futures at Penn State. For example, what is the status of Keyvone Lee after another cryptic social media post? They discuss their impressions of Lee's plans and then run through the list of players who have NFL Draft decisions to make. Finally, Fitz and Bauer focus on NIL and how things are happening behind the scenes. Bauer explains that just because nothing has happened yet, it doesn't mean that it can't happen this offseason. He discusses what he's heard about the concerns with compensation for players and the strains it could put on the locker room. Lastly, Fitz gives an update on recruiting heading into the biggest official visit weekend of December. Penn State is hosting several key recruits that they hope to commit before the early signing period at the end of December. He gives an update on Kaveion Keys, Mason Robinson, Christopher Johnson, and Keyshawn Blackstock. Check out the show to find out who those players are (if you don't know already) and whether or not they're coming to Penn State. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 422Hoops Podcast: Micah Shrewsberry brutally honest after tough Michigan State loss
Penn State basketball lost a critical game against Michigan State on Wednesday night 67-58 to fall to 6-3 on the season. Despite a solid start to the game, the Nittany Lions failed to bring that momentum into the second half, shooting 1-9 from three point after the break. So what happened? Join the Blue White Illustrated hoops podcast with host Thomas Frank Carr and Nate Bauer as they break down the game and the meaning behind the loss. Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated podcast feed wherever you get your podcasts. Bauer, Blue White Illustrated's basketball reporter, and insider starts with a big-picture view of the game and discusses how Penn State shot out to a 21-12 lead before surrendering a tied game at halftime. He discusses what he thinks the turning point was and how internal pressure caused a poor shooting night. You'll also hear from Penn State basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry during the show. The Nittany Lions' leader discussed the importance of the game and how acknowledging that fact may have led to an adverse outcome. Next, they discuss the shooting performance that Penn State put together against the Spartans. Was it another night where teams took away the three? Or did Penn State shoot poorly? Finally, Bauer discusses what he saw and what Shrewsberry said after the game to underscore that offensive issue. One of the other issues that Bauer and T-Frank dissect is Kebba Njai's shooting. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the growing pains of the young big-man and how the pressure of the moment affects him. That pressure isn't internal, either. Bauer describes a team dynamic that may be getting in the way of Njai playing confidently now. From there, they discuss star Jalen Pickett's night, which nearly included another triple-double before the well went dry for the entire Penn State offense in the second half. T-Frank describes a similar scenario that the team faced several years ago when former star Lamar Stevens had to shoulder the entire offensive load for stretches in a game. Can Pickett do the same? Or will he have to find a better way to include his teammates? Bauer and T-Frank debate his performance before hearing from Shrewsberry as the final word. Lastly, they look ahead to the rest of the Penn State basketball schedule and illuminate why this was such a big game for them to win. Bauer discusses and projects out the next ten Big Ten games to see how the Nittany Lions may to start conference play. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 418BWI Daily: Penn State coaching staff heads south to secure Class of 2023
Penn State football is idle this week during conference championship weekend, but the coaching staff is still hard at work. Head coach James Franklin and his assistants are out on the road now that the contact period is open and are visiting committed players and key prospects to try and secure the Class of 2023. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder discuss coaching movement and the latest news on several recruiting battles. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKHowever, T-Frank and Snyder start the show discussing the latest on four-star corner Daniel Harris. Most of the On3 Penn State and national staff have put a pick in for Harris land at Penn State, but it has yet to happen. So what's the situation? Snyder and T-Frank discuss how the rollercoaster recruitment has gone this week. Next, they discuss another important target that Penn State could hope to secure shortly. Class of 2024 running back Duke Watson has been publicly high on the Nittany Lions, but Snyder says there's some conflict internally about the staff accepting a committment right away. Why? Snyder says that it's not about talent but the opposite issue. Lastly, Snyder updates T-Frank on the official visit list for Penn State's big weekend, starting next Friday. The Nittany Lions are hosting several significant prospects beginning on Dec. 9, and Snyder gives T-Frank a rundown of the latest additions. The list, and the conversation, are heavy on running back discussion with the uncertainty of veteran Keyvone Lee's status with the team this offseason. If Lee chooses to leave via the transfer portal, the current projection is that the team would have only one healthy scholarship running back. So Snyder and T-Frank will discuss that position's names and priority level next weekend. Next, the duo discusses the college football playoff expansion and its impact on college football. The playoff committee announced that after next season, the playoff will expand to a proper 12-team format. Snyder and T-Frank discuss the wide-ranging ramifications of the sport and how they think things will play out in the coming years. They also discuss the impact that it will have on the Big Ten, conference alignment, and Penn State. Lastly, they finish up the show by looking back at Snyder's performance on his Best Bets segment this season. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 417BWI Daily: The transfer portal threat is real
The college football championship games kick off on Friday before the weekend sets the playoff picture; get the latest buzz on Penn State’s chances of heading to the Rose Bowl in January with the BWI Daily Edition. On today’s wide-ranging show, host Nate Bauer and Blue Wihte Illustrated Publisher Sean Fitz discuss that, All-Big Ten selections, and the latest roster news from this week. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKFitz and Bauer start with Nate’s favorite topic, bowl selection. What’s the latest news on Penn State’s bowl destination? This weekend’s game may not matter at all, based on new reports. Find out how the Nittany Lions could skip the line and head to Pasadena in January. After finishing up the discussion on bowls, the team turns its attention to the players who will or maybe won’t play in the game. Redshirt junior cornerback Joey Porter Jr. opted out of whichever bowl Penn State will play in and head to the NFL. The All-Big Ten corner missed several games to end the season thanks to an appendectomy at the beginning of the month but returned to play on senior day. He finished the game against Michigan State with 11 total defensive snaps and two targets. So, who else might opt out of the game aside from Porter? Fitz and Bauer discuss the most likely names. Next, they turn to the All-Big Ten selections that Penn State earned alongside Porter Jr. Both were shocked at where fellow corner Kalen King and safety Ji’Ayir Brown landed and bandied about other names in the discussion about which players landed with what team. Finally, they dig into the most crucial topic of the show, the transfer portal. Penn State redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux put his name into the portal this week, marking the first soon-to-be departure when the portal opens on December 5th. There are other likely names, but it’s the unlikely names that Bauer and Fitz discuss. That’s because Name Image and Likeness is going to dramatically shape college football because teams will begin the attempt to poach players from other schools with lucrative or enticing deals. How will they go about that? Bauer explains how he hears the conversation framed. Meanwhile, Fitz discusses how NIL will affect the incoming recruits set to sign in December. The first-year starter became a household name this season for his excellent play and is turning down a potential first-round NFL Draft selection to return to Happy Valley. What sort of effect will this have on the team? T-Frank and Bauer will discuss and take your questions on the topic. It's more good news for Penn State along the offensive line, something the team has been working hard to achieve. Starting left guard Hunter Nourzad announced that he plans to return for his final year of eligibility earlier this season. The Penn State offensive line worked through heaps of injuries this season, with Fashanu missing the final four games of the regular season. Nourzad missed several games in the middle of the year and returned to play through injury. Meanwhile, starting right tackle Caedan Wallace missed five games to end the year, and starting left guard Landon Tengwall had season-ending surgery in October. Bauer and T-Frank will also discuss the game against Michigan State and how split Penn State fans are on this year's 10-2 record. They'll also take a broader look at the season now that it's complete and describe what this season represents for the program. It was a hot finish to the season after a crushing loss to Ohio State on October 29th. In the final four games, the team outscored it's opponents 165 to 40. Ep 412BWI Live: Penn State survives Michigan State, look ahead to what's next
The Nittany Lions ground out a tough win against Michigan State Saturday, winning 35-16 on senior day in Happy Valley. The Penn State offense struggled to put points up once again. After rushing for 127 yards in the first half, the ground game went silent for the Nittany Lions, who amassed only 47 total yards in the third quarter and scored their lone touchdowns thanks to a muffed punt by returner Jayden Reed. Quarterback Sean Clifford was under constant pressure with few options downfield despite the hot start for the offense. Things looked like they were going to be on cruise control heading into halftime. The Nittany Lions scored on a receiver pass from KeAndre Lambert-Smith to Theo Jonhson for 48 yards in the second quarter. Earlier, Clifford captained a drive down into the red zone where he found Johnson wide-open on a coverage bust for a touchdown. But Penn State couldn’t find consistency, failing to score twice thanks to two missed field goals from kicker Jake Pinegar. On the flip side, the Penn State defense gave more points to Michigan State than it has in the last two games combined. Despite getting pressure on Michigan State starter Peyton Thorne, the coverage unit gave up big plays on third and long to help keep drives alive. However, Mike Yurcich’s offense came through in the fourth quarter with a long drive to soak up time and yards before Nick Singleton raced into the end zone on a fourth down screen to put Penn State up by 12. The drive took 11 plays, went 75 yards, and ate up four and a half minutes of the play clock late in the game. Three plays later, the Penn State defense closed the game out with a third-down interception by Kalen King, who had multiple pass breakups during the game. One play later, Clifford found KeAndre Lambert-Smith on a deep pass to put the game out of reach. The Nittany Lions finished the season 10-2 and ended the season on a four-game winning streak. Penn State awaits the decision of the College Football Playoff Committee to find out its postseason destiny. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 411BWI Daily: Penn State finishing home recruiting schedule strong against Michigan State, Best Bets
While most of the country's attention will be on Michigan and Ohio State this weekend, the Nittany Lions have put together a quality list of prospects attending its season finale against Michigan State on Saturday. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to update you on the list for this week. He also gives you his best bets for the weekend's action. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKHost Thomas Frank Carr starts by asking Snyder which players will join four-star receiver Rodney Gallaher this weekend at Penn State's game against Michigan State. While the list of 2023 prospects hasn't grown significantly, several high-priority players in future classes will be on the sidelines this weekend. The biggest name, who has attended several games this fall, is 6-7 offensive tackle Kevin Heywood. The PA native already has a pick to land with the Nittany Lions from Snyder, so will this be the weekend he commits? Snyder dishes that info. Another name to watch is a promising running back from 2025, John Forster. The young player camped with Penn State and impressed in his first appearance on the recruiting scene this summer. Snyder recaps the rising sophomore's season for context. Snyder lists several other players attending this weekend that could impact the recruiting process in the future so check out the video to hear who they are. Next, they look ahead toward December, one of the most unprecedented signing periods. Snyder lists some things he's watching for this year with Name Image and Likeness dominating the news. The transfer portal is already in full gear, so what's next is a mystery. However, the plan for Penn State football is clear. Ep 408BWI Daily: How losing Parker Washington affects the Penn State offense
The Penn State offense sustained another loss last week when top receiver Parker Washington didn't play against Rutgers. Rumors of his season-ending injury turned out to be true on Tuesday when head coach James Franklin announced his season was over. Today on the BWI Daily Edition, host Thomas Frank Carr discusses how the loss of Washington changes the lineup for the worse and how he thinks Penn State should adjust for the final game of the regular season against Michigan State. He'll also give a preview of what Michigan State likes to do defensively and discuss the slow offensive start problem that the Nittany Lions have had this year. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKT-Frank starts by reviewing the outcome of the game against Rutgers to ascertain how Penn State adjusted to the loss of Washington. He highlights how fellow starter Mitchell Tinsley's role changed, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith assumed a more significant role to pick up the slack. Fans saw how that played out and how Penn State adjusted throughout the game. With the changes offensively, who does T-Frank think should see more playing time? He gives his case for returning Tinsley to his original role and letting another receiver assume the slot position vacated by Washington. However, the loss of Washington doesn't explain that Penn State's offense has been exceedingly slow to put together drives and score points in games this season. So, T-Frank asked Franklin on Tuesday how the process of in-game adjustments works. He plays Franklin's answer and explains how that process has gone for the team this season. It underscores a problem in the passing game that T-Frank has pointed out several times in 2022 and gives more clarity to the problems that the team has had stringing together plays. Finally, he puts all of this in the context of the next game against Michigan State. He speculates about the need to play three receivers against the Spartans, how they might play the Nittany Lions and what he thinks the early-game matchups will dictate for the Penn State offense. Does the good team/bad team conversation matter? They'll try to give a perceptive answer with one game left to go. Next, they'll talk about the Penn State quarterback performance from Saturday. Ep 405BWI Live: Penn State defense dominates Rutgers 55-10
Penn State's defense took its game to another level on Saturday, not only suffocating the Rutgers offense but scoring points for the Nittany Lions as well. Throw in a Nick Singleton kickoff return for a touchdown, and Penn State blew out Rutgers 45-10 on Saturday. Join the BWI Live postgame show immediately following the game to discuss the win and what's next for the Nittany Lions. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss the show. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKPenn State got off to a rocky start in the game, trailing 10-7 after a poor punt from punter Barney Amour and an Aaron Cruikshank kick return to get Rutgers into the Penn State red zone to start a drive in the first quarter. Penn State's offense couldn't find any momentum to start the game, punting on five of its first six drives and fumbling on the other. Thankfully for the Nittany Lions, the Penn State defense locked down the Scarlet Knights, with only 22 yards allowed after the first three drives heading into halftime. In that time, the defense also intercepted Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsatt, forced a fumble that turned into a touchdown, and set up the offense for success. So despite only gaining 179 yards in the first half, Penn State led 28-10 going into the break. A defensive touchdown on a sack and forced fumble by linebacker Curtis Jacobs opened the lead to 38-10. Finally, the running game got going in the second half thanks to several explosive Kaytron Allen, and Nick Singleton runs. However, the freshman of the game was once again linebacker Abdul Carter. The budding star tallied multiple quarterback pressures, a quarterback hit, a sack, and two tackles for loss. Backup quarterback Drew Allar took the field with five minutes left in the third quarter and managed the game after that. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 404BWI Daily: Penn State in battle for several decommitted recruits
The drama of the college football recruiting cycle is heating up for Penn State football as the season draws to a close. The Nittany Lions head to Piscataway to face Rutgers on Saturday, but the drama off the field is what the BWI Daily Edition will focus on today. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr to discuss the latest in several recruiting battles, give his best bets, and finally, finish with a preview of the upcoming game. Early this week, four-star corner from Florida Daniel Harris decommitted from Georgia and opened up his recruitment. Soon after, Snyder put in a pick for Penn State to land the 6-2 defensive back. So what has happened since then? Snyder fills T-Frank in on the latest twist in the battle between the Nittany Lions and the Bulldogs. He also sets parameters for when he expects news to come from the high-profile corner prospect. After looking at Harris, T-Frank and Snyder take a quick detour to examine where the Nittany Lions stand in the class rankings this cycle. Will Harris' commitment bump them into the top ten if he does flip to Penn State? They review the top 15 schools and Snyder details where he expects Penn State to land. Next, they discuss another player decommitting from a different school. Where does Penn State sit with three-star edge rusher Brenton Williams? The fast-rising prospect backed away from Coastal Carolina after getting multiple power-five offers, including Penn State. Snyder explains when he'll visit Happy Valley and what other schools might be in the mix. Moving on from 2023, the duo shift their focus to 2024. Four-star quarterback Jayden Bradford has Penn State among his final four schools. So, what are the chances he picks the Nittany Lions? Snyder explains what he's seen from offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Yurcich and his big board to decide if Bradford is the top prospect in the cycle. Finally, they get to this week's picks in Ryan Snyder's Best Bets. Here are the game this week: USC (-2.5) at UCLABoston College (+21) at Notre DameOle Miss (-2.5) at ArkansasPenn State (-19) at RutgersAs always, Snyder gives you the game and his play for the four matchups this weekend.
