Join the BWI Live Postgame Show immediately following the game to discuss the win and how the team is set up to face Ohio State in the defining game of the 2023 season next Saturday in Columbus.Penn State offense shakes off slow startIt was another slow start by the Nittany Lions until cornerback Daequan Hardy ripped off a 56-yard punt return for a touchdown on his first return of the season. The 5-9 corner had a strong game with a pass breakup and several disruptive plays in the first half. He later capped his career day with a second punt return for a touchdown. The team also committed its first turnover on offense for the 2023 season. Injured receiver Trey Wallace returned to the lineup and got off to a rusty start. He fumbled on a slant route to give up the ball, then missed a deep pass from Allar. But the slow start quickly faded away, and Penn State scored on four straight drives to blow the game open and put things to bed early in the third quarter. Penn State's offense finally found it's explosive stride with Wallace back in the lineup. Wallace caught a shallow pass and ran for 31 yards, and then Theo Johnson finally got involved in the deep passing game. Allar connected with the 6-6 tight end on a 30-yard touchdown strike over the middle to score early in the third quarter. Johnson followed that up with an 18-yard catch and run to put Penn State up 42-0 and the starters to call it a day.Defense domiantes againOnce again, the Penn State defense was beyond suffocating. This week's flavor of havoc was sacks. The team registered six of them before halftime and allowed just one net rushing yard in the shutout performance by the starters. Before the competitive portion of the game was over, UMass averaged five yards per drive. The defense also racked up 13 tackles for loss and was virtually unopposed into the backfield on run or pass plays on the afternoon. The standout performer was defensive end Adisa Isaac, who tallied 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss on the day.Join the BWI Live Postgame show as we discuss the game and preview the upcoming contest with Ohio State.Penn State takes on Ohio State in the pivotal game of the 2023 season coming up next Saturday. Join us on the stream or listen locally on 99.5 The Bus.Penn State impressed with UMassPenn State head coach James Franklin discussed the UMass football team to begin the week and praised the Independent club for their innovation and production on offense.“Their offensive coordinator, we’ve been impressed with, Steve Casula. Steve is doing a really nice job for them. We’ve been impressed with them on offense. They’re an 11-person, no-huddle spread, heavy, heavy RPO team. Maybe the most explosive team we’ve played this year. If you look at them statistically, they’re No. 2 in major college football for plays of 50 yards or more. They’re ranked No. 2 in the country. Plays of 10 yards or more, they’re ranked ninth in the country, so this is an explosive team,” Franklin saidIt’s also the first game that Penn State should have number two wide receiver Harrison Trey Wallace back in the lineup in a meaningful way. Wallace appeared in the game against Iowa but wasn’t targeted and then missed the game against Northwestern the following week before the bye. During the show, Hawkins highlights the receivers in his Key Matchups segment to break down how Wallace’s return affects the offense.1-0, but with an eye on the futureOne of the key elements of the final non-conference game is health. Wallace is back, but the team lost guard JB Nelson during the last contest with Northwestern. Franklin wouldn’t comment on his stats, per his usual policy with injuries, but he did acknowledge that the team is, overall, in a good spot.“Nothing has changed with J.B. in terms of how we normally discuss injuries and things like that. Nothing has changed there. In terms of health, I think we’re in a pretty good place from the things that we talked about in terms of the number of reps our guys have had in games the number of guys we’re playing. I think we’re in a pretty good place from that perspective.I mean, obviously, you’d always love to be totally healthy, and we’re not that, but I think we’re in a pretty good place,” Franklin said. With the team’s showdown against Ohio State looming next week, getting out of this game healthy is a critical part of today’s contest. We’ll discuss the Penn State offense, defense, and give predictions for the game on today’s show. Ep 601BWI Live: Five Things To Watch When Penn State plays UMass | Getting the groove back
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKThe Penn State football team takes on UMass Saturday for its final non-conference game of the season. While no one expects this to be a challenging game for the Nittany Lions, it's important to examine how the team can prepare for the second half of its season with this contest. Today on the BWI Live show, we'll examine five things we're looking for when Penn State takes the field against UMass. If you want to get your thoughts on how you'd like to see the Penn State offense and defense play, join the show live and discuss the game! We'll be taking live questions from the chat and discussing season-long trends in how the team has played so far this season.Penn State getting its groove backThe Penn State running game is productive but hasn't had the feel-good plays they wanted this season. Despite that, running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider is happy with how his tandem of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have played so far this year."I really like where we're at. Contrary to belief, we run the ball effectively. We haven't had a long runs. Everybody knows that. But if you watch the film, you watch the defense the week before they play us, and the week when they play us, we are getting different defenses every week," Seider said. However, we'll discuss what head coach James Franklin said earlier in the week about how great running backs can get off their groove. Does Penn State need to re-establish that? We'll check in with Seider, who again puts that on the coaches and the defenses paying extra attention to his dynamic duo."Well, I mean, talking about instincts, I think a lot of that is on us as coaches, being able to get back to who we are in our running style and what plays we want to carry out the week. You know, we probably added some stuff in there that we wish, as a coach, you wish you'd maybe take back and get back to our fundamentals. But it's also a defense a lot of time, dictate what type of scheme we run throughout the week."UMass making things happen for both sides of the ballWe discussed earlier in the week that UMass's offense is explosive but plays with a risk-reward style. We'll dive into some numbers that illustrate what kind of day it will be for the defense if they can be opportunistic with their chances.Next, we'll examine how the UMass defense plays and how it might be tailor-made to get Penn State's struggling passing game back on track this week.Join the BWI Live show at 10 a.m. on YouTube, and be sure to subscribe so you don't miss any of our other live content coming up on game day!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. But then we didn't back it up with a Wednesday practice that was right. We're starting to kind of really figure out how to practice at a really high level on a consistent basis. And whether it's football or any other industry or sport, being really successful is about consistency," Franklin said afterward. He also made a statement to start his press conference about inaccurate reporting by national outlets, which we'll discuss on the show.Franklin also fanned the desires of some fans to see right tackle Caedan Wallace move from right tackle, paving the way for redshirt freshman Drew Shelton to take his place. Penn State's head coach mentioned that Wallace has gotten work at guard this year."It's just flexibility. Obviously, when we lost Landon, that changed some things for us. I think Caedan is the guy that has the feet and athleticism to play tackle, but he's also got the size and the power to play guard. He's 330 pounds or somewhere around there. So he just creates flexibility. That's good for us, and I think it's gonna be good for him long term as well."Game predictions and MailbagFinally, we'll preview the game and give score predictions. With battles against Ohio State and Michigan looming in the coming weeks, we're discussing what the staff is likely working on to improve its team before those games.Today, on the Keystone Kickoff Show, presented on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel, we're discussing what the team worked on during the bye week and what they need to improve to be a complete team.Join the show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube as we answer fans questions and explain where the team's strengths lie on the roster. We'll discuss the Penn State passing game and Trey Wallace's absence affecting the team dynamic. We'll also explain how the defense has turned into a suffocating unit. Will Penn State offense be whole coming out of the bye?So, what's wrong with the Penn State passing game? Penn State head coach James Franklin was fairly blunt about the inconsistency issues.I think that's where -- that's been probably impacted as much as anything is when you really have two guys that have played a ton of football for you at the receiver position and there being some consistency and trust in practice and in games with those guys, and then you lose one of them for a couple of weeks, that magnifies that.Being able to have Trey [Wallace] back and KeAndre [Lambert-Smith] on the field while those other guys are developing those roles and those opportunities and that confidence, I think will be helpful. But I think getting Trey back is a huge piece of that puzzle," Franklin said.Penn State defensive line turning the corner? The Penn State defense has been suffocating over the last month of the season, thanks largely to an improvement up front. We'll discuss how the team's defensive tackles have taken strides to improve, not just as athletes but as football players. It's a sentiment Franklin backed up yesterday."We want our guys to be lean and athletic, but more importantly, they're playing in a way that they're so disruptive. We're more consistently gap sound. We're more consistently disruptive.I know Manny [Diaz] and Deion [Barnes] have been very pleased as we sit in there -- I watched the game typically on the ride home on the plane and then I watch it typically in the morning and then I watch it with the defense, and just hearing them talk about the defense and how we're playing, guys doing their job on a consistent basis. But they're also playing bigger in terms of being disruptive and being gap-sound and doing their jobs on a consistent basis," Franklin said.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 598Why did James Franklin single out Penn State corner Johnny Dixon? Press conference reaction
Penn State Nittany Lions football head coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Tuesday to begin the second half of the 2023 season. We're recapping his conversation with the media. Among today's topics included Franklin singling out another football player that he said needs to get more attention, cornerback Johnny Dixon. Why has Franklin started doing this? Senior editor Nate Bauer discusses some of the subtext around players and how that has potentially changed how Franklin conducts his press conferences. Check out the full video here, or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Franklin singling out Penn State players While Franklin isn't afraid to talk about individual players, it was rare for him to bring up individual players unless asked about them. Now, he's done it several times this year during his opening statements of a weekly Tuesday press conference. "I did want to give one of our guys some love because I don't think he's getting enough attention for how well he is playing. It really started in training camp and has continued, and that's Johnny Dixon. I think Johnny is playing really good football. I think we have two corners-- we have more than that but two corners in Johnny and Kalen that are tough guys and that are physical at that position, which is less common now than it used to be.They do a really good job in a lot of different ways, not just defending the pass. Johnny is a great blitzer, then also supporting the run, so I wanted to give him some love because it's deserved," Franklin said. Bauer gives his thoughts about what could be driving this change from Franklin. Check out the video for his thoughts. Next, we discuss the team's health coming out of the bye week. The team has been observably healthy, minus wide receiver and left guard. So, how do you balance losing two players at guard and one of two consistent wide receivers but having a healthy team? We discuss the delicate balance Penn State has, especially on offense. Next, we dive into Penn State's quest for balance this year. Franklin once again detailed what he thinks balance on offense means. "I mean, as you guys know, we want to have the ability to run or pass. In any game and in any given situation, that's kind of how we view balance. We want to continue to build on that." But how many teams can do that? We discuss how close Penn State could be to achieving that ability to adapt to their environment each week and how hard it is to achieve. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We're checking in on the Nittany Lions midway through their run at a Big Ten title to see how they're progressing on both sides of the ball. Join the Keystone Kickoff Show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube to join the discussion about the Nittany Lion's progress so far.Penn State offense self-assessmentPenn State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich spoke with the media during the bye week and addressed several issues on the offensive side of the ball. Despite scoring over 30 points per game this season, there are elements of the passing game that Yurcich isn't pleased with, namely, wide receiver communication with the quarterback.Yeah, it's a big concern with me right now and to us as an entire staff and we've got to remedy that fast. And we got to be on point with our landmarks and our depths of routes and our timing. That is something that we're going to address, and that is a big issue. We have to clean up."However, the nature of the offense comes down to the quarterback and how he sees the field. issues with route timing and communication don't matter unless the signal caller can process the information and make decisions. So far, Allar has been a by-the-book quarterback in his first season. He's building plenty of trust with the offensive staff, says Yurcich."I think Drew has a really good feel for seeing the field. He does a great job of going where he needs to go with the ball and where he should go with the ball based on what the defense has given us. So it's not a freelance type deal. When the ball snapped, they do whatever.Obviously, there's things that we go through and progressions and rules. And the more we have trust that he's going to follow those rules and when certain times come where he sees certain things and gets to a particular route or progression. There's thoughtfulness behind it," Yurcich said.Penn State defense benefitting from the offensive stylePart of Penn State's dominance over the last several weeks has been the team's ability to rest. The Nittany Lions are playing fewer snaps and have greater depth than in past years. Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz sees a fresh team when they step on the field."We are playing less snaps. Our offense has had a big help in that with the way that they possess the football. And ideally, that just keeps us fresher for the second half of the season. We've got some guys who have played 75 percent fewer stamps than they played this time last year. So there's a real added benefit to that," Diaz said.On today's show, we'll discuss elements of these topics, including the nature of the quarterback, the issues in the run game, and the offense's explosiveness. Defensively, we'll focus on areas that the team has improved through five weeks and discuss the nature of the defense and how it aims to dictate terms to the offense.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comWhere can Penn State improve after 5-0 start? | Midseason Recap Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the win and the Nittany Lion's 5-0 start. We'll break down the game, what happened, and how Northwestern's defense frustrated the Penn State offense.Despite the lack of explosive offense, the Nittany Lions scored 17 points in the third quarter to get a large enough lead to keep Northwestern at bay. Quarterback Ben Bryant also went down with an apparent shoulder injury after a third-down sack by Zane Durant that extinguished Northwestern's best chance to make the game competitive.Penn State defense puts up another elite performanceNot only did Penn State knock out the starting quarterback for Northwestern, but they suffocated the Wildcats offense through most of the game. Penn State racked up 10 TFLs in the competitive portion of the game and corralled four sacks and five QB hits.Once again, the defense held the line while the offense struggled to generate points in bunches. They limited Northwestern to under 200 yards of total offense and less than a yard per rush. The starting secondary still hasn't allowed a passing touchdown through five games of the year.Offense not stuck, but slowYet the story coming out of the game once again is the Penn State offense that struggled to generate explosive plays against a wounded Northwestern defense. The offense averaged 3.4 yards per carry on the day and the rushing offense failed to register a run of over 20 yards against a defense that allowed 20+ run plays of that kind through the last two games. The passing game had more success, but Allar was once again less effective on the road, completing 55% of his passes on the day. Injuries cropped up on Saturday as well. Starting running back Kaytron Allen also missed the second half of the game, and JB Nelson left on a cart in the first half. The team was already without starting lineman Landon Tengwall with a career-ending injury during training camp.Join the BWI Live postgame show to get your thoughts on air! We'll explain how the quarters defense affects the Nittany Lions' passing attack and their rushing efforts. Head coach Jame Franklin explained how this two-high defense differs from the rest of the coverages in the same family."There's a big difference between two safeties, with a cover to philosophy two safeties, with a quarter-quarter half philosophy and then two safeties, that are playing quarters, because really quarters you could really put into, you know, a totally different family because it's a way to play middle of the field open but really technically nine guys in the box," Franklin said. We'll discuss how that's affected the Nittany Lions' passing and rushing attacks through four games this year.Tough, but how good are they? We'll dive into film analysis of the Northwestern defense next and discuss the nature of how this team plays defense. Are they as bad as the rushing stats would indicate? We'll highlight the strength of the Northwestern defense and how they have given up so many big plays in the run game.As with most games, Penn State will have the advantage on passing downs with an elite pass rush that can threaten any quarterback. But where is there a distinct advantage this week? We'll look at a matchup that Penn State can exploit, especially on third down. From there, we'll start to give predictions about how this game should go for Penn State from a game perspective. Is this the week Penn State puts explosive plays on the board? We'll explain how and why that's the case. Finally, we'll examine the top thing we'll watch on Saturday. Allar completed 68% of his passes as the Nittany Lions kept things short and controlled. The Penn State running attack wore down another opponent with 46 carries before the backups came in the game. Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton combined for 38 carries and 121 yards in the competitive portion of the game. Penn State head coach James Franklin called his shot earlier in the week about how the game would play out."I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game," Franklin said on Tuesday. The problem for Iowa, was that Penn State was the only team dong the grinding. The Nittany Lions had four drives of ten-plus plays and another drive of eight plays, all resulting in points. The offense was unrelenting, going 4-4 on fourth down.Penn State defense snuffs out another opponentOnce again, the Penn State defense set the offense up for success by smothering the Iowa offense. After an opening drive of six plays for 24 yards, Iowa didn't register another first down before Iowa put in their backups in the fourth quarter. The Penn State defense five straight three-and-outs with two fumble recoveries bracketing that performance.Curtis Jacobs, Adisa Isaac and Chop Robinson all forced a tackle for a loss during the game, with Robinson registering his first sack of the season and Isaac putting up his second.Enjoying the win? Even the weather is getting in the spirits for this Big Ten clash, with rain and chilly conditions forecast for the game. But what's going to play out on the field this evening?Join the Penn State Football Tailgate Show, presented in conjunction with Seven Mountains Media, starting at 4:30 outside the Bryce Jordan Center, across the road from Beaver Stadium. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins the show to discuss the game and give his insights into the matchup between Penn State and Iowa. Catch the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or locally on 99.5 The Bus in State College. On today's show, we'll discuss Penn State's offensive plan and how they should attack Iowa and how the defense can counter the Hawkeyes ground attack.Penn State vs Iowa has deep roots. As Penn State head coach James Franklin noted earlier, there's a history between his team and Iowa over the years."First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument."But despite Kirk Ferentz's long-standing tenure at Iowa, Franklin is quickly climbing the rankings of veteran Big Ten coaches in his tenth season at Penn State. Consistency like this could breed a great game or complacency. Franklin says that evolving is necessary, but not at the cost of your identity."I think that really starts with two things, and that's hiring and recruiting, making sure that you're hiring the right people in the building and recruiting the right people into the locker room, and that you're transparent with them on what they're signing up for," Franklin said earlier this week."Then saying, Okay, they have to understand how to blend within the culture and align kind of with the identity, but then also allow a Manny Diaz to be Manny Diaz and play to his strengths and allow his strengths and experiences to add value to our overall organization, be able to have Drew [Allar] that we talked about, bring him into our organization. Like we talked about maybe a week or two ago, not put restrictions on Drew that it limits his development and his ability to be a unique player."Both Diaz and Allar will be central figures in today's show. Former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins joins us to break down the game and give his thoughts on the upcoming matchup.Five Things to Watch: Penn State vs. IowaOnce again, Penn State faces Iowa in a pivotal game early in the season. Head coach James Franklin has gotten used to it over the years."First of all, it's almost like opening on the road in the Big Ten. We played Iowa more than anybody. Maybe you could make the argument part of maybe the best team in the west over our team here at Penn State. You could make that argument.Again, we love that. We're appreciative of the Big Ten for that. I know it's random - random."Like many other Iowa teams, this group will represent a challenge in the running game. The team is strong up the middle with stout defensive tackles and physical linebackers. Is this another opportunity for the Penn State offensive line to prove themselves? Or is it another chance for the offensive scheme to pivot? We'll examine this topic from both angles and try to determine how Penn State will play with its ground game.On the flip side, is this the same old Iowa team? The Hawkeyes have struggled to score points and run the ball up the middle. We'll examine the opponent's success running in the A and B gaps and give film-level clues as to why.Next, we'll spotlight Drew Allar and the Penn State passing attack. How will the Nittany Lion's first-year starter handle the disciplined and tenacious coverage unit for Iowa in the White Out? We'll discuss the keys to keeping him upright.Biggest threat for Iowa out for the seasonTight end Luke Lachey's injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Iowa. We'll explain how important he was to the Iowa passing attack. Can the Hawkeyes pivot in one week? Finally, we'll get to the number-one wrinkle in the game that we find the most interesting. How will Allar fare against one specific coverage? We'll discuss those topics and your thoughts today on the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m.!Five Things to Watch in The White Out | Penn State vs Iowa Preview#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Nittany Lions will host the top quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class this weekend too. Find out more on the BWI Live Recruiting Show, which airs at 10 a.m. on YouTube.White Out meaning for Penn StateThe White Out has become the landmark college football experience over the last 20 years and has made an impact socially, and strategically for Penn State. It's not just the football team that benefits from the weekend, says head coach James Franklin."No, I didn't have an understanding or an appreciation of the White Out. But now, obviously, not only is it impactful for us. You think about how many of our guys talk about their recruiting process and how the White out had a big impact on that. You think about when we got here, a lot of the good players that were on the team, talking about that five-overtime win with Michigan, it was a ton of guys on our roster that had experienced that. So it's meaningful. It's not just meaningful for our football program. This is a huge recruiting weekend for the other 30 sports as well. It'll be in some ways a zoo this weekend."On today's show, we'll discuss that zoo and outline just how many players will be on campus for the football recruiting weekend. Recruiting insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will share some select names from the list of players planning to attend and highlight names you should know. One public announcement so far is that the top quarterback in the Class of 2025, Bryce Underwood, plans to attend the game. Snyder and Fitz will talk about the impact of Underwood choosing to visit Penn State over other top games this weekend. But the upcoming recruits are the only players that are making moves this week. The updated On300 for 2024 came out on Monday and Penn State is well represented among the top 300 players nationally. Snyder and Fitz will discuss the players that moved up and down the ranking for the class that signs in December and Januar.Open practice reportPenn State held open practice yesterday as well. Head coach James Franklin summed it up during his Tuesday press conference,"I think those guys have been great. I also think in the Big Ten you look at statistically, we play good defense around here. There's going to be games where we've got to grind it out. You guys know Iowa. This is probably going to be another one of those games where we're going to have to grind it out. It's going to be a four-quarter game."We'll discuss what Illinois did to fool Drew Allar and the Penn State offense on Saturday and how Allar was able to make good decisions in bad situations. We'll also discuss the issues behind Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen's lack of big runs.Next, we'll examine how the defense smothered the Illinois plan of attack. The Illini managed only 62 yards rushing and turned the ball over five times. How did the defense get this done? We'll discuss Luke Altmyer and what Abdul Carter saw on film heading into the game that allowed him to intercept the first pass of the game. We'll also discuss how Daequan Hardy, Johnny Dixon and the rest of the secondary played the Illinois receivers and how they made it look easy. Finally, we'll preview the upcoming game against Iowa. What are the differences between Illinois and Iowa? Penn State gets "pretty" Big Ten win with ugly performanceWas the game on Saturday a beautiful rock fight? Or a sloppy, concerning performance from the Penn State Football team? Head coach James Franklin clarified his thoughts after the game, saying that his team appreciates a win no matter how it looks. But fans have a different feeling. After consistently failing to run or pass on the Illinois defense, are fans right to be concerned? Blue White Illustrated football experts Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer will give their thoughts on how the Nittany Lions performed and how that translates to the future games on the schedule. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar completed just 48% of his passes on Saturday, after two lights-out performances to start the year. We'll dig into why Allar struggled and what this new information about the passing attack means for the team. We're now three weeks into the 2023 season, and the longest run by a Nittany Lion's running back is 20 yards. We'll discuss the offensive line, the running backs, and what's short-circuiting the team's explosive rushing tandem of Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton. Defense comes up BigIt wasn't all bad for the Penn State football team on Saturday. The defense put together its most dominant performance of the young season, stifling the Illinois passing attack. The team came away with four interceptions with several other dropped opportunities on Saturday. The defensive performance was so impressive that it forced starting Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer to the bench. The front seven also racked up two sacks, two quarterback hits, and various other pressures that led to the interceptions on Saturday. After a quiet statistical start to the season, is Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's defense back? We'll dive into the good and the bad of the performance from the defense on Saturday. The defense got two official QB hits per the game book, but the Illinois passer took multiple shots during the game. The constant pressure and sticky Penn State defensive backs also forced the quarterback into four interceptions on the afternoon before he was pulled. After two quiet weeks, the defense was back to their old tricks in the run game as well. The team had five tackles for loss heading into the fourth quarter. The offense, thanks to another short field from a defensive interception from Cam Miller, broke the game open to start the fourth quarter. Nick Singleton finally got to the second level of the defense for an 18-yard touchdown run to put Penn State up by 23 points.Overall, the offense struggled, with Drew Allar completing less than 60% of his passes on Saturday. The sharp quarterback hadn't completed less than 78% of his throws in the first two games. Allar looked uncomfortable in the pocket for most of the game, thanks to the consistent pressure from the Illinois defense and wrecking ball Jer'Zahn Newton. Newton had a tackle for loss, two quarterback hits and a pass breakup to almost single-handedly keep Illinois in the game. We'll discuss these players, plays and more on the BWI Live postgame show. We'll discuss how Bret Beilema's squad has struggled out of the gate this year, and what they might do this week to change their fortunes. Then we'll discuss how the Nittany Lions can attack the 1-1 Big Ten West Team.Penn State's plan of attackStarting out on the road is nothing new for Penn State. Head coach James Franklin made pointed jokes about the fact that his team has started Big Ten play on the road for the 13th time in the last 14 years. But after opening the season on the road, is there a difference to do doing it in week three?"I'm not sure. We're just experts of opening on the road, whether it's the first game, the second game, the third game, the fourth game, not only in my ten years, but I think over the last 15 years. We're experts. So, I think we're going to put an offseason clinic on how to open in the Big Ten."The Penn State offense has been prolific this season, putting up 101 points in two games. Can they do it again this week? Having offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich in the press box has been a huge change for the team. one for the better.I think it's clearly the better place to call the game. You just can see it better. You're removed from the emotion. I think Danny O'Brien has done a good job on the sidelines as well. That's helped. But I think I think so far, so good. And we've had to iron out a few kinks that have happened, whether it's been with personnel or substitutions or some things that we got to get ironed out in terms of just a little bit of the differences on the sideline. But I think it's been good," Franklin said. The team may get veteran reinforcements this week with cornerback Daequan Hardy, defensive end Amin Vanover, and defensive tackle Coziah Izzard returning to practice earlier this week. The Penn State Football Tailgate show is a production of 7 Mountains Media and 99.5 The Bus in State College. Some of those thoughts are the bedrock of today's show. Will we learn more about key aspects of the Nittany Lions team that we haven't yet? However, we start with a look at the Illinois defense, which has faltered through the first two weeks of the season. What's the issue? We'll explain how things have shaken out for the Illinois secondary.Next, we discuss areas that Penn State's defense needs to strengthen this week. Which defense will show up in week three? We've seen a group that struggled to tackle in space and one that shut down an FCS team. Illinois will represent another test to inform us of how the front-seven will play this year.Next, we'll try to glean which group of playmakers will face Illinois on Saturday. Will the team play three receivers? Or will Mike Yurcich stick with two tight ends. We'll discuss the pros and cons of each plan this weekend.Penn State stars playing like starsSo far, the Penn State defense has played a team approach, with everyone chipping into the performance. Part of that is by design, with plenty of rotation over the last two weeks. But can the team's star players play up to their billing this week? The Nittany Lions used 19 carries from Kaytron Allen and three touchdowns from Nick Singleton to power their way to a blowout victory. In a flip of last week, quarterback Drew Allar played a support role to the running game.Want to know how it all happened? Penn State's top two runners of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen had 31 combined carries, 150 yards and four touchdowns to lead the offense. Overall, the Penn State offense rushed for nearly 300 yards on the day, with Trey Potts and Beau Pribula getting plenty of action in the third and fourth quarters.Allar was efficient on the day, completing 22 of 29 passes for 204 yards and one rushing touchdown from the goal line. Allar was patient on the day but didn't hit many explosive passing plays, with a long of 26 yards.Defense is almost lights outThe Penn State defense dominated almost every drive, the way you'd expect with a matchup like this against an FCS opponent. The defense had five three-and-outs before the middle of the fourth quarter when the backups entered the game. An offsides on a punt extended one other drive.KJ Winston turned up the heat just after halftime when he picked up a forced fumble caused by fellow safety Keaton Ellis. Later, backup linebacker Dom DeLuca intercepted a pass for a touchdown to put a fine point on his day. DeLuca had a near interception several drives earlier in the third quarter. What's next?Penn State faces Illinois on next Saturday for its second noon kick. Illinois lost to Kansas 34-23 on Thursday night. It's the Big Ten opener for the Nittany Lions, who have opened Big Ten play on the road once again. While fans may not feel the same juice as the opening game, which was a primetime stripe-out, it's an important part of the calendar for the Nittany Lions. Can they get better this week and improve on the mistakes they made in the prior game? We're breaking it down into five things you should watch for in the game to see if the offense and defense made the corrections they needed to from the previous week. We'll take you through some hidden areas that West Virginia attacked during the opening game, critical corrections for the offense and defense, and which players should dominate in the matchup against the Fighting Blue Hens.Join the show live at 10 a.m. to discuss the game and any questions you have! We'll be taking comments throughout the show from the live audience.Penn State Five Things:The first area we'll start with is the defense. Last week the unit played well in critical moments, as head coach James Franklin explained in his Tuesday press conference."I thought defensively what stood out to me is we played our best when it was needed most. There's some things that we've got to get cleaned up for sure. But when we needed to make plays on defense, we did. That was important," Franklin said. We'll highlight the areas where Franklin wants his team to improve. The next area on our countdown is the offensive line. The group, along with the running backs, was efficient and gained good yardage on each play, but one area still bothers the group up front. We'll dive into the numbers of where and how the Penn State offensive line gave up pressure.Does West Virginia set a template? The Mountaineers had a sneaky-good idea for attacking Penn State's third-down defense. Is this an area other teams will exploit? We're not expecting Delaware to try the same plan of attack, but we'll explain how Penn State's vaunted Prowler defense was put on the defensive during the game last Saturday. From there, we'll dig into how the defense can improve and clean up their play from the previous week. It's not as drastic as some fans think, but there are corrections the team needs to make to be ready for Big Ten play.Lastly, we'll look at the position group that we think will impact the game this weekend. Find out why Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen need to lead the way for the offense on Saturday.Penn State vs Delaware | Five Things to Watch | Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen go off?#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The sophomore Penn State quarterback completed 72.4% of his passes, going 21-29 for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Those figures earned him a Big Ten Player of the Week honor by the conference and his team's offensive MVP for the game.We discuss how Allar made dissecting a somewhat complicated defense look easy. If you'd like more information, check out this week's film study on the passing game.https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/t-franks-film-room-penn-state-quarterback-drew-allar-shows-franchise-traits-in-first-win/The main thrust of how Yurcich attacked the West Virginia defense dealt with unbalanced formations and safety manipulation within those looks. The first-time Penn State starter was also effective over the intermediate middle of the field, which is typically difficult for a first-time starter. He completed 100% of his six passes for 118 yards during the game.**PFF updated their statistics upon review and charted one incompletion over the middle that was originally elsewhere.Penn State defensive reviewThe Penn State defense didn't have the shutdown performance that most fans expected, with multiple big-time plays. However, head coach James Franklin pointed out on Tuesday they were good at the right time."I thought defensively what stood out to me is we played our best when it was needed most. There's some things that we've got to get cleaned up for sure. But when we needed to make plays on defense, we did. That was important," Franklin said. However, he expects more from the backups, who allowed a late score in the fourth quarter."Then I think back to the point I made earlier is whoever is in the game, the standard is still the same. When we got a lot of those backups in the game on defense against mostly the 1s of their offense, the expectation is to still play up to our standard of defense."#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Penn State leans on young QB in primetime winPenn State entered halftime up 14-7 but the Nittany Lions drove down into the redzone twice and came away with zero points due to missed field goals from Sander Sahaydak, who lost his job at halftime to transfer kicker Alex Felkins. Despite the fanfare of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen coming into the game, Allar was the star. The first-time starter showed great poise and vision during his debute, completing over 70% of his passes on the night. Allar finished the game with 325 yards and three touchdowns. But Allar didn't compile short passes to get his yards. He averaged 15.5 yards per completion, pushing the ball downfield. On the other hand, the offensive run game played the efficient supporting role against the Mountaineer defense. Allen and Singleton combined for 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 combined carries. The offensive line opened impressive holes and put in a positive effort to start the season. https://twitter.com/ThomasFrankCarr/status/1698136320256692705Defense gets off to shaky start, rights the shipThe Penn State defense, a highly-touted group of playmakers, got off to a rocky start. Right now, you can get in for 50% of the yearly subscription.Five Things to Watch: DefenseThe West Virginia Mountaineers bring a dangerous running game to Happy Valley on Saturday, and we'll break it down from the bedrock of the system to the top. Here's a snippet from this week's explanation of the running game and passing game with quarterback Garrett Greene. The zone running scheme, especially outside zone, is essential to fold into the passing conversation. A large portion of the West Virginia offense last year was built around the RPO and read-option concepts off of the running game. The outside zone is an aggressive lateral rushing attack that forces the defense to flow in one direction with the offensive line. West Virginia’s line is good enough that you have to respect their ability to out-gap you up front. But off the back of this system, head coach and offensive coordinator Neal Brown pairs these secondary concepts. This causes a shearing effect on the defense, where most defenders have to follow the play. But the backside corners and safeties are still responsible for the screen game. Next, the offense adds Greene’s rushing ability slows down backside pursuit from the unblocked defender as well.On today's show we'll break down these concepts with visuals and then build off of that to explain how the Mountaineers passing attack functions with Greene at quarterback. Finally, we'll explain how Chop Robinson, Kalen King, Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs and the rest of the Penn State defense can make West Virginia one-dimensional.Join the show to ask questions and give your comments to T-Frank live on air!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State vs West Virginia: Five Things to Watch with the Nittany Lions Defense Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 566BWI Live: Penn State LB Curtis Jacobs recaps camp and previews Penn State vs West Virginia
Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs joins Thomas Frank Carr to discuss training camp, his teammate's progression this offseason, and preview the game against West Virginia on Sept. 2. They discuss Kobe King's advances as a linebacker, and Jacobs gives his thoughts on the offense and how the young quarterbacks have progressed. He also shares how Manny Diaz coaches his players to understand things from an emotional and tactical level.Check out the video here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Get ready for game day by subscribing to Blue White Illustrated. We'll be hosting a live 90-minute tailgate show with former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins three hours before each home game. Jacobs ready to answer the questions There's no doubt that Penn State's defense has gotten praise this offseason from local and national media. It's a talented group of players, and Jacobs says that while he's pleased with how training camp went, now is when the real fun starts. "I'm feeling great. This is my favorite part; being able to get out there and compete good-on-good. Now it's even better. We get to actually hit quarterbacks, get on the field, and really be violent. I'm excited to show off what this defense can do."He also gave a scouting report on the Mountaineers offense and what he's seen from the groups he focuses on. "I think they have a really good offense; Very athletic and a great quarterback. He's good at seeing things, and he likes to take off. He's really good with his feet. Also, I always take a deep dive into running backs and tight ends; those two groups look really good," Jacobs said. Can Penn State's speed counter West Virginia's scheme?Jacobs says that the Penn State defensive tackles, the group under the hottest spotlight this offseason, are playing with a chip on their shoulder. After a month of internal competition, the defense is ready to go up against a strong running game from West Virginia. "I have tremendous faith in my D-line and linebackers and our front seven. We've been attacking one of the best lines in the country ourselves here at Penn State. I feel like we're ready for a challenge and to attack on Saturday."The main way they'll counter teams this year? Whether it's run or pass, Penn State's elite team speed will lead the way. "O-linemen are mainly powerful in their box, in their framework. When you have fast guys, [they] can get on those edges and it makes it hard for those guys [linemen] to come out and get you in the space that there is on the football field. I feel like speed is tremendously important, and it can be disruptive in the run and pass game." Breaking down zone rushingFor Jacobs, defense comes down to simplifying what he sees and blocking out the noise. Whether it's read options, RPO schemes, or zone running concepts, he's watching his film and then relying on the defense rules to help him play fast. However, he explained what the West Virginia offense tries to do when they play inside and outside zone concepts. "They want to get you out of our gap. A lot of times, that stuff is masked up by shifts and motions and all that stuff. But really, they want you to not focus on what you're seeing and get distracted by other things. Finally, Jacobs talked about how the defense has progressed this season. He shared a quote from defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who explained how the team should play as a unit instead of trying to make plays individually."We've only gotten better because we play for one another. We make sure that we have each other's back. Coach Manny always says you can't take money out of your teammate's pocket. You've got to know your assignment and execute your assignment so that you can make a play, but sometimes so your teammate can make a play," Jacobs said. Ep 564BWI Live: Penn State vs. West Virginia Preview - Five Thing to Watch When Drew Allar has the Ball
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKWe covered a lot of ground this week when previewing the West Virginia defense for Penn State's season-opening game on Sept. 2. If you haven't yet, check out the preview of the running game and the passing game from earlier.Today on the BWI Live YouTube show, we're condensing that down into five things you should watch for when Penn State has the football. How will the offseason storylines for West Virginia affect the matchup with Penn State next weekend? We'll discuss how the team tried to rebuild its defense and the potential problems that will cause. Then we'll discuss the mak up how the Mountaineers will try to attack probable starter Drew Allar and the rest of the offense. From there we'll discuss the best way that Penn State can attack the defensive structure. Join the show today at 10 a.m. Live on YouTube to discuss the matchup and to get your questions and thoughts on air. If you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illutrated's YouTube channel.Setting the scene for what Penn State will faceSome teams build their roster through recruiting and some dip heavily into the transfer portal to fix problems. While West Virginia likely wants to recruit and develop talent, they've had to bring in waves of transfers over the last two seasons to address immediate needs. We'll review which players they selected to join the program and how those players fit into the scheme. Some even have a Penn State connection.Next, we'll look at a stylistic difference West Virginia uses, unlike the typical attack that Penn State sees in the Big Ten. The Mountaineers will drop eight and only rush three lineman more than any Big Ten team from last season. How does that affect Allar? And what can we take from last year that gives us a clue about how he can perform in this situation? We'll look at that.Compounding issues for WVUNot only did West Virginia bring in a healthy dose of transfers, but defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley said this spring that the team plans to lean on its young linebackers to play in 2023. With some players not arriving until the summer, how sound will the Mountaineers defense be in week one? Youth and unfamiliarity may lead to certain issues for the team. How could Penn State attack?Lastly, we'll look at last season's data to understand which players, schemes, and formations caused West Virginia the most trouble. Then, we'll translate that information and examine which Penn State players can cause the most damage.
