Four-star cornerback Brandon Finney from McDonogh committed to Oregon over the Nittany Lions in a very close recruiting battle. On3 reporter Pete Nakos confirmed a long-held belief that the governing body would expand college football staff size to include any analyst or coach employed by the university. Now, staff like Penn State legend Dan Connor can provide hands-on instruction for players. Will this give Penn State an advantage? Who does this help and hurt in the landscape of college football? We'll discuss. However, the rule changes didn't end there. The NCAA changed portions of the recruiting calendar to reflect the modern realities of college football. We'll detail those changes and give a brief overview to the situation. Be sure to check out the site and the BWI Live Recruiting Show on Thursday to learn more.Wildcards in the Class of 2025In addition to critical losses in the class, Penn State has a unique collection of talent this year that defies recruiting or positional norms. While the Lions have players in this category each year, eight players fit into our "wildcard" or "underrated" buckets. Today, we'll discuss the four players who are complete wildcards in the recruiting class.Want to get your thoughts on the show? Ep 744Wrestling Show: What happens at 133 for the Lions next season?
Penn State wrestling continues to be in the news as June rolls along. The Blue-White Illustrated show and podcast dedicated solely to head coach Cael Sanderson's team is back with a fresh episode to get you another week closer to the start of the college season.Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel start this week's rundown with transfer portal news. Former Nittany Lion Terrell Barraclough was the only member of the program to look for another home following the 2023-2024 season. He's found it. The graduate senior with one year of eligibility remaining will finish his career at Utah Valley. It is about an hour from his hometown in Kaysville, Utah. Barraclough will man the 165-pound spot for the Big 12 program. In the Big Ten, he wrestled all throughout the middle weights and even saw time at 174 pounds during the 2023-2024 season. He was 2-1 in dual meets and 12-2 overall. His career record at Penn State is 42-19. Carr and Pickel dive into why Utah Valley is the right fit for Barraclough. From there, the duo looks back at the U20 Nationals and U.S. U23 Team Trails. Five future Nittany Lions earned spots on the U20 team, as Second-year PSU wrestler Josh Barr (86 kilograms), Class of 2024 signees Luke Lilledahl (57 kilograms), Zack Ryder (79 kilograms), and Connor Mirasola (92 kilograms), and Class of 2025 commit PJ Duke (70 kilograms) will all represent their country at the U20 World Championships in Spain this September. The Lions do not have a U23 Team member at the moment. From there, the conversation turns to the outlook for Penn State wrestling at 133 pounds in 2024-2025. Will second-year Nittany Lion Aaron Nagao man the starting spot again? He suffered an undisclosed injury at the U23 Team Trials. It is unclear how that will impact his prep for the fall. But either way, second-year Penn State wrestler Braeden Davis looks to be on a path to bumping up to 133 pounds. Whether he redshirts this year to compete for the job next year or competes with Nagao for it this year remains to be seen. The pair close the show by discussing all of the factors that will go into that decision. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The team will get several critical recruiting commitments over the next few months, and the best way to know when that happens is to subscribe and enable notifications so you know when we drop a commitment video.Penn State official visit weekendThis weekend's visitors descend on Happy Valley starting on Friday, May 31. The team has gone quiet with commitments since before the Blue-White Game in April with running back Alvin Henderson. So who might be the next player to take the plunge? The defensive roster for the recruiting class of 2025 is sparse so a commitment from edge defender Cedric Works or Max Granville would be a big win for Penn State.Yet the headliners for this weekend are the receivers. Quincy Porter, Lex Cyrus and Corey Simms will each try Penn State on for size over the next several days. Will any join Lyric Samuel in the receiver room? We'll also discuss the impact of getting the nation's top linebacker Ty Jackson to campus. Can the Nittany Lions snag the elite Florida recruit?Prospect camps start this weekendOn top of the critical visitors coming to campus, the team needs to find the next wave of recruits. Prospect camps start on Saturday and continue on Sunday. Last year, Peter Gonzalez put together an impressive performance that landed him a scholarship offer and a spot in the Class of 2024. But even before his first chance to host his top targets in an official capacity, wide receiver’s coach Marques Hagans is on the hot seat with many fans. The team’s struggles to generate separation and a consistent passing game in 2023 tanked the team’s best chance to defeat Ohio State and led to another low-wattage performance against Michigan. But this is the first year that Hagans will have a chance to develop relationships with and recruit players that fit his vision and style for the team. But by now, we have a much better idea of what that style of player looks like.Today on the BWI Live Show, we’re discussing what we’ve learned from Hagan’s first recruiting class prospects and what he’s prioritizing in a player. We’ll discuss his coaching style, what he emphasizes, and how he likely came to lean on those traits. Ep 736BWI Live: Most overrated Penn State storylines for 2024
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions football team departs on its next quest for a postseason berth this fall in a new, unexplored 12-team playoff. Many situations, players, and decisions will affect the ultimate outcome, but not all in the way. On today's BWI Live Football Show, we're discussing those things that hold an oversized place in our minds about the upcoming season. To end the show, we'll also be taking your questions in the BWI Live Mailbag. Join us at 10 a.m. on YouTube or check out the replay embedded in this article.Fitz's Recruiting UpdateThe Big 33 All-Star game between Pennsylvania and Maryland happened last weekend, with three future Penn State football players competing. The star of the event was Nittany Lions commit Tyseer Denmark, who had three touchdowns in the standout performance. What did BWI Publisher Sean Fitz take from the game? He highlights Denmark, run-on Aaron Enterline, and defenisve back commit Kenny Woseley on today's feature. From there, we discuss the Penn State wide receiver room further and try to properly contextualize the role that Denmark or fellow freshman Peter Gonzalez can have on the 2024 season.Penn State news updatesWe start this week's news update by reviewing the Penn State Board of Trustees meeting from last Tuesday. The board overwhelmingly voted to fund the renovations to the stadium last week, which we previewed before the event. However, we're reviewing the arguments made during the meeting for the positive and negative votes. We also take a question from the chat about preserving the ambiance of Penn State's home field while providing a modern and luxurious experience.Next, we review the civil suit by former Penn State team doctor Scott Lynch. Dr. Lynch sued the university for what he alleged was a retaliatory firing by the program. We discuss the prosecution's claims and preview what the defense is likely to counter with. Most Overrated Storylines for the upcoming seasonToday's main topic surrounds the overrated ideas and narratives about the team's performance this fall. Is Abdul Carter's move to the defensive end a major negative impact on the linebackers? Will he be a game-changer as an edge rusher? We debate if those topics are overrated in the conversation about this upcoming season.Next, we discuss the third rail of the Penn State offense. We all agree that the Lion's passing attack is a key issue for the team this fall. However, we debate the idea that Drew Allar has to be an elite quarterback for the offense to function better than it did last year. Is that true? Or is it overrated? Finally, we discuss the topics you want to discuss on the BWI Mailbag to close out the show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comMost overrated Penn State storylines for 2024 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Heading into the second period trailing, 2-0, Retherford’s pace paid off. He capitalized on an errant shot attempt by Sujeet for a go-behind takedown, taking the lead on criteria, 2-2. His defense held firm for the rest of the match, cementing the win and his place in the bronze medal Olympic playoff match.Retherford is one of four Nittany Lion Wrestling Club members and six U.S. Team members total going to the summer games. We’re counting down the ten players on either side of the ball who have the talent and experience to make those steps on today’s BWI Live Show. Join us as we look at the offensive and defensive players who can improve the team’s performance. Here’s the criteria for the players on today’s list.Physical skills necessary to be a standout player or difference maker in their position They have to be able to reach that ceiling realistically or close to it this upcoming season. Must be on a path to contribute in 2024Players who have reached some version of their ceiling, such as K.J. Winston or Kobe King, won’t be included. If you want to check out the series of articles that this show is based on, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated.Penn State transfer portal recapBefore getting to today’s list, we discuss last week’s final round of spring transfer portal departures. We’ll discuss their impact on Penn State from a short—and long-term perspective, focusing on safety King Mack and wide receiver Malik McClain. From a football perspective, Mack’s decision doesn’t make much sense and we discuss why.Players with the most upside: OffenseHere’s an excerpt from the top five article today’s show is based upon. It’s been hard to separate Ioane and JB Nelson at guard for almost a year. So, when ranking their composite skills on a “ceiling” list, we will push and keep them tied at five. He hasn’t shown it much, but Nelson is an equally rare athlete. He’s one of the team’s strongest offensive linemen, and his performance numbers as a prospect align with those of the team’s tackles. After all, there’s a reason that he’s the team’s swing tackle. Players with the most upside: DefenseWe’ll conclude today’s show by looking at the defensive side of the football. While there are fewer players on the defense who can reasonably achieve upside than on the offense, the defense features some very promising players.Whether he starts for Penn State or not, transfer A.J. Harris leaps to the top of our list as a player with incredible potential. He’s got the size, at 6-1, 188, but more importantly, he uses it. He hounded wide receivers during the Blue-White Game and played with a physicality that stood out to everyone. #PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDEight Penn State Nittany Lions were drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft over the weekend. On today’s show, we’ll revisit where each player landed and what sort of situation they find themselves in at the next level. However, one player is probably more controversial than the rest regarding his decisions over the last year. So, what happened to Kalen King? The former second-team All-American fell to the seventh round, just three picks from the final selection in the draft. We’ll discuss the factors that led to his draft stock falling, and what situation he finds himself in with the Green Bay Packers. We’ll also discuss the players whose stock is up after spring football for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Which players did the most to move their needle in the correct direction? We’ll give you some of the names we selected. But on the flip side, who is sliding back into the pack? We’ll highlight specific players who need an adjustment in fan expectations.Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube! We’ll review each player’s fit with their new teams and discuss how they mesh at the next level. For one, Olu Fashanu fits very well with the New York Jets on the field. On the flip side of organizational stability from the Chiefs is the New York Jets. From a schematic and developmental fit, Penn State tackle Olu Fashanu fits very well within the Jets program as the tackle of the future behind Tyron Smith. He’ll get to learn from a Hall of Fame mentor and work on his run-game skills until he gets called into the starting lineup. Check out the rest of our best fits here.Best Fits: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/best-penn-state-player-fits-after-the-2024-nfl-draft/Spring practice risers and fallersFinally, we tie up loose ends from Penn State spring football with a look at the players who made moves. Which players are on the rise? Which players are slipping back. Here’s a snippet of what we discussed on today’s show.Confidence and strength are sometimes hard to tell apart in the growth of an offesnive lineman. Last season, Vega Ioane played well for a redshirt freshman, but he didn’t show the dominance his 6-4, 350-pound profile hinted at. He was a good lineman with quick feet but didn’t necessarily play fast. Fast forward to this spring, and we saw a different player. Ioane looked leaner and more confident in his movement. Notably he was looking for work instead of looking lost in pass protection during the Blue-White Game. #PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 720Wrestling Show: Breaking: Penn State loses wrestler for 2024 season | U20 US Open Recap
Penn State wrestler Terrell Barraclough has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed to Blue-White Illustrated. The Wrestling Room founder Pat Mineo first reported the news. Barraclough, who is from Kaysville, Utah, is in as a graduate transfer. He has one season of eligibility remaining.Barraclough’s decision to move on is not a shock. He has been a tremendous teammate while operating mostly in a backup capacity during his time in blue and white. He was 12-2 in 2023-2024 but competed in just three dual meets, where he was 2-1. Throughout his time at Penn State, he has been flexible with his weight, filling in at both 165 and 174 pounds when needed. His most dual meet matches in one year came in 2021-2022, when he was in seven of them and went 7-8 on the year including a near upset of Nebraska star Peyton Robb.Barraclough is the first Penn State wrestler to hit the portal since the 2023-2024 season ended. He may not be the last. Wrestlers have until May 3 to enter the portal and still be eligible next season. We also discuss the U20 US Open this past weekend. Here are the discussion points for today's show.Penn State had three Class of 2024 champions in Luke Lilledahl, Zack Ryder, and Connor Mirasola. Lilleadahl was the outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Can any compete in year one with the Lions? -Class of 2025 commit PJ Duke won a title as well. And Penn State had numerous top eight finishers.–Braeden Davis competed at 61 kilograms (133 pounds). Sign of a future weight change or something else? –Josh Barr wrestled well. As predicted, left tackle Olu Fashanu went in the top half of round on to the New York Jets, while defensive end Chop Robinson found his new home with the Miami Dolphins. On today’s BWI Live Show, Penn State film analyst Thomas Frank Carr discusses what each player brings to their new teams and how they fit in. Join the show at 10 am on YouTube or check out the video on the site.Penn State players find near-perfect fits at next levelNot only has T-Frank watched these two players closely for the last several seasons of Penn State football, he’s also a diehard Buffalo Bills fan and has a good understanding of the AFC East dynamics that both players step into at the next level. Here’s what he had to say about Fashanu’s fit with the Jets.Jets head coach Robert Saleh is the former defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and brought a similar offensive system to New York. The team relies heavily on the popular outside zone running scheme in the NFL, which Penn State used last season under former OC Mike Yurcich. Not every zone scheme is run the same way, but most rely on athletic offensive linemen working in tandem to steal gaps from the defense in a lateral fashion. Fashanu’s athleticism and movement skills make him a great fit for this scheme, allowing him to play with speed and burst off the football. But Fashanu’s real value is as a pass protector. Find out what he is good at and how he can help unlock a new level of offense for the Jets.Chop Robinson can flourish in MiamiTypically, defnses like this ask its edge defenders to play upfield and attack the run with speed, rather than control of a gap. While Robinson isn’t an aggressive run defender from a contact standpoint, he’s incredibly effective at getting upfield and shedding blocks in space to create negative plays and bubble runs to his side. In all situations, his athleteicism has a chance to shine. Find out how the Dolphin’s organizational philosophy also should help Robinson become the best version of himself.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 717BWI Live: Post-Spring Penn State Football Positional Review
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDWe're still assessing the results of spring football for the Penn State Nittany Lions on today's show. After six weeks of practice and the Blue-White Game, where do players stand within their position heading into the summer months of player-led training? We're looking at the key positions heading out of spring football on today's BWI Live. Join the show at 10 am on YouTube or check out the replay here, embedded in this article.Penn State offensive breakdownThere's little change with the team's top two positions on offense. Quarterback Drew Allar played the majority of the team's starting reps, with backup Beau Pribula taking two series with the top offensive line and receivers. But what about the position battle at running back? Penn State's young players put on a show this spring, and despite missing time, freshman Quinton Martin showed impressive skill in the Blue-White Game. We'll discuss where the battle for the third running back spot is between Martin and Cam Wallace.Unlike running back, wide receiver is a much messier and more complicated picture. Why was transfer Julian Fleming on the Blue Team? What can we make of the team's performance from this spring? We'll discuss how Penn State has generally used its wide receivers from a positional perspective and then discuss how a team makes them positionless within an offense.Tight End gives an incomplete pictureHow Penn State plans to use its tight ends is very different than what we saw during the Blue-White Game. However, we have some clues about where the competition stands on Saturday for the backup job to starter Tyler Warren. Finally, we'll try to explain how Penn State used its offensive linemen, specifically in relation to freshman Cooper Cousins. Will he play center or guard this year and what led to him starting at right guard during the Blue-White Game? We'll dive into the offensive line performance from this spring.Penn State DefenseLastly, we'll look at the Penn State defense and what sort of competition the team has at linebacker and cornerback. Will the team play just two linebackers this year? If so, how does veteran Dom DeLuca fit into that picture? We'll also discuss Ta'Mere Robinson's performance during the Blue-White game and where the defensive line will find room for five pass rushers in the lineup.Join the show today at 10 am to hear all of that and more!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPost-Spring Penn State Football Positional Review Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We’re all about to see how Abdul Carter’s transition to defensive end is going.Another fan favorite this weekend is freshman center Cooper Cousins. The five-star lineman has caused a stir so far this offseason with his continually impressive performance.Simply put, Cousins is breaking the expectation curve for a freshman offensive lineman. Not only is he in a position to compete for playing time, but he’s also working for a starting job at center. Most linemen who play early find a role as a guard or maybe a tackle if they’re elite athletes. Cousins is taking on the dual challenge of a mentally taxing position and adjusting to college football. While it’ll be hard to gauge how he does for most fans during the game, we’ll follow up after with film breakdowns to highlight what we see.Where do Carter and Cousins rank? We always think ahead preparing for the future. We’ll be back in the room on Monday. We love what we do, we love to train. We love the sport of wrestling. We'll discuss the potentiality, impact of a commitment, and fallout of missing out on a top-50 player. But it's not just Zollers who made a decision this week. More recruiting news is bubbling with another high-value regional target this week. Four-star defensive tackle Trent Wilson narrowed his list of school down to four contenders this week. Now that official visits are an unlimited resource, do they still matter the same way? Are they an indicator of true interest or can players schedule a plethora of visits just to see different schools?Upcoming visitsFinally, we'll end the segment by discussing the upcoming Happy Valley visitors during the penultimate spring football weekend.
