Penn State's vaunted defense allowed over 500 yards without key starters and injuries that cropped up throughout the game. Join the show live on YouTube immediately following the game.Penn State and Ole Miss trade blows earlyThe first half went to the Nittany Lions, who came out of the gates hot. Despite not having Olu Fashanu, Kalen King or Johnny Dixon, the team got things going on both sides of the ball. Penn State rushed for 85 yards on ten carries. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen took that momentum from the first half to average a twin 6.6 yards per carry at halftime.Meanwhile the Penn State defense under co-defensive coordinators Robb Smith and Anthony Poindexter got to Quinshon Judkins early. The run-heavy Ole Miss offense gained one yard rushing thanks to the typically aggressive Penn State front seven. That led to several third-and-longs where the Penn State pass rush got to quarterback Jaxson Dart.Second quarter saved by big playBut things changed in the second quarter. Ole Miss veered away from its run approach to attack Penn State's young corner. Zion Tracy and Cam Miller couldn't lock down Tre Harris, who put up 63 yards in the first half. His teammates outdid him, tight end Cade Prieskorn, who racked up 96 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Dayton Wade threw in 79 yards as well. Dart threw for 258 yards in the first half.Meanwhile, Allar and the offense failed to find a second gear. The passing game struggled once again but was aided by a trick play from backup quarterback Beau Pribula, resulting in a 48-yard touchdown to Nick Singleton.Third quarter implsionPenn State's offense didn't do much to help itself at halftime. They botched a two-minute drive, giving the ball back to Ole Miss iwth a chance to score before the half, then went three-and-out on the second half's opening drive. The third quarter was the turning point in the game for the two teams. Penn State's offense remained in neutral coming out of halftime. The team gained 14 yards to Ole Miss' 141. The Nittany Lions went three-and-out on each drive of the third quarter, showing little ability to threaten a maligned Ole Miss defense.Meanwhile, a critical injury to Abdul Carter opened the gates for an already churning Ole Miss offense. Carter was rolled up on at the end of the first half and tried to play through in the third quarter. However, he struggled to get off blocks or play with explosives, helping to allow 57 rushing yards in the third frame. We'll be taking your questions and thoughts about the loss on the show for sixty minutes after the final whistle. Ep 652BWI Live: Dave Eckert joins the show to discuss Penn State vs. Ole Miss

We're just hours away from the 2023 Peach Bowl and Penn State football's chance to go six-for-six and win every New Year's Six Bowl game. To do it, they'll have to beat Ole Miss, led by head coach Lane Kiffen. In order to learn more about the team, we're connecting with an old friend. Former Blue White Illustrated reporter David Eckert joins the show to discuss Ole Miss, the team he now covers. He joins the show for the first time since his move down South to give us a better understanding of the team Penn State faces. Penn State defense facing a balanced offenseWe start the show by getting to know the Ole Miss offense. Jaxson Dart is a fan favorite for his team and someone Eckert thinks Penn State fans would love. But who has the quarterback advantage? We'll discuss the matchup and how Dart operates the Ole Miss offense. This week, Penn State defensive end Adisa Isaac assessed the offense he'll face this weekend. They bring a lot of challenging aspects to the game that don't have to with skill."Yeah, I say definitely the tempo and the personnel. They know how to get their skill guys into space and make plays. We kind of pride ourselves on stopping the run all year, and this is a team that has some good backs that run hard and some good receivers as well. So they're pretty balanced in that aspect. So we've just got to do a good job of locking that down," Isaac said. The running game is a focus of our conversation, as well as how Ole Miss will face off against Penn State. However, we end the conversation discussing Tre Harris and his impact on the game. Ole Miss defense is "multiple"According to Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, the most noticeable aspect of the Ole Miss defense is their multiplicity. "Yeah, we've been saying it all bowl prep that they're a very multiple team, play a lot of even and odd fronts. So we're going to have to be tight on communication up front, whether it's run-blocking schemes or pass protection," Allar said. We discuss that diversity and what it might be trying to mask up front for Penn State's next opponent. Will the loss of Cedric Johnson affect that group? Opt-in CultureFinally, we'll discuss that there are only a few opt-outs on either sideline. Penn State has several players that could opt out of the game but decided to play. The same is true for Kiffen's side, where Johnson is the only player not participating. Head coach James Franklin says that it's not by accident that Penn State is nearly at full strength. "Yeah. I think you guys have heard me talk about this in the past. These are different times in college football, and we've worked really hard to create a relationship with our players that there can be open and honest dialogue and discussions," he said. "We've tried to create an environment where really there's no reason for any player to opt-out. What I mean by that is all the way back to Saquon Barkley, who was being projected as a top 15 pick, there's a way to do this where the player, the family, the agents, whoever, everybody's comfortable with the plan." When you Use Promo Code BWI to get 10% off your order! The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is looking for a new defensive coordinator heading into the 2024 offseason. With the early national signing day looming, plus the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30, the team needs to act quickly. But does Penn State head coach James Franklin already have the next coordinator on his staff? A popular option among fans is to promote from within and have safety coach Anthony Poindexter assume the role of replicating Manny Diaz’s defense. On today’s show, we debate the merits of that against hiring a new coordinator with his own system. Franklin opens the door to PSU internal hireThe idea of Penn Stat hiring from within isn’t a bad one. Poindexter is an excellent coach with experience who could be a candidate for the job. Franklin alluded to as much during his Monday press conference when asked about the job. “(We’re) trying to also balance that while also interviewing and trying to decide what we’re going to do moving forward with our defensive coordinator position, whether it’s an internal candidate or an external candidate. And we’re working through that right now,” Franklin said. “But we’ll handle it like we have on offense the last few games of the season. And I’ll get into more specifics as we get together again.”The issue is the sentiment that Poindexter should “run Manny’s defense”. We’ll discuss how that could go wrong and the challenges of any coordinator trying to replicate someone else’s scheme. Fans questions want to know more about team buildingPenn State offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will take over next year with the same question that the team had this year. How do you use two quarterbacks? On today's show we'll discuss how to best use backup quarterback Beau Pribula in any offense that features Drew Allar. We'll also take questions from fans about the tight ends behind Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren. Can Penn State keep the same level of productivity at the position? Lastly, the team needs to make the right moves in the transfer portal this offseason. What are the positions that the team needs to address? We'll discuss the addition of Divison II tackle Alan Herron and preview what the team still needs from the portal before the window closes in January. We'll talk about what the offense, under head coach Lane Kiffen, likes to do, and how they do it. We'll also discuss the team's defensive abilities, schemes and players. Check out the show here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Page. We'll also discuss new Penn State's offensive coordinator, Andy Kotelnicki and his offensive approach. Penn State defense vs. Ole MissToday's show is based on the By The Numbers series from earlier this week, after the bowl matchup was announced. He's an excerpt of what we discuss on the show. From a productivity standpoint, Jaxson Dart is the best quarterback that Penn State will face this season. All the former USC commit has done in two seasons under Lane Kiffen is throw for just under 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons. Despite that, the team isn’t a pass-happy unit with a 60% pass ratio. The team only threw the ball on 48% of its offensive plays this year. We’ve been obsessed with the term “balance” this season with the Penn State offense. This offense truly has balance in its offensive threats. That’s allowed Kiffen to scheme up explosive plays for the Ole Miss offense. Dart has generated 92 explosive passing plays (15-plus yards) this season, tied for seventh most among Power Five offenses. That accounted for 2,442 yards. Check out the complete breakdown of the offense here. Drew Allar, running backs will face a familiar challengeAs for the defense, we folded in some early scouting to give fans a picture of what Ole Miss does defensively. The answer? A lot. The official Ole Miss depth chart says that the team runs an odd front defense, with three defensive linemen and an “outside” linebacker, but the team can and does run just about every front with regularity. While they “base” out of an odd front (3-4), they play wide over, odd, wide under, and even fronts an equal amount. Despite being listed as an outside linebacker starter, Cedric Johnson has dropped into coverage 44 times out of 526 total snaps in the regular season. To cut through the technicalities and jargon, Ole Miss deploys two defensive linemen and two edge defenders that they use in multiple ways, including odd fronts. It’s about how you’re used, not always what you “can” do. But the bottom line is that the Penn State offensive line must be ready for many different looks. Once again, you can see the full breakdown of the defense and it's schemes here. Ep 640Hoops Show: Is Penn State basketball in trouble after loss to Bucknell?

The Penn State Men’s basketball team has now lost four straight games, including a 76-67 clunker against Bucknell this past weekend. “It’s unacceptable. That’s on me,” he said. “We got to get our guys to completely understand how we play defense. I pride myself and our teams always on being able to stop people, not just in full court but the half court. When you have a new team and how we do things defensively, it’s foreign, not as familiar to some of these guys. It’s not as consistent. This first window is open for a short time, and will be a major factor in which teams are set up for success next fall. Can Penn State fill its holes and reload for the coming year? We'll discuss that and more on today's BWI Live Show. Join the show!Penn State has a quiet start to the transfer portalAs of writing, only two players, punter Alex Bachetta and receiver Cristian Driver, have entered the transfer portal. That's a quiet start for the Penn State Nittany Lions who have been uncommonly good at keeping talent in house during the portal era. We'll look at previous seasons to determine if more will be on the way, or if the team will retain all its players that don't go to the NFL.We'll also discuss names like Washington State's Josh Kelly and North Texas' Ja'Mori Maclin as players that Penn State has publicly offered in the portal. Both players are receivers, and the team is desperate to find more playmakers. While it may go unnoticed by some, there have already been losses in the coaching ranks. Penn State analyst Ola Adams has taken a job with Indiana this week, so we'll recap his time at Penn State and discuss his impact on the program. It's a perfect segue to discuss new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and what head coach James Franklin had to say about him on Sunday evening. Ep 637Hoops Show: Breaking down Penn State's tournament skid

Penn State started the season out with some promising games against non-conference opponents. Then, they hit a tough stretch of games in the ESPN Invitational. Mike Rhoades' team lost three straight to Texas A&M, Butler and Rhoades' old team, VCU. On today's Hoops Show, we discuss what caused the team's three-game losing streak and the thorny issues causing the team's problems. Rhoades says that the tournament was a wakeup call to reality for his team. "When you play in really good tournaments like that, you get exposed quickly. You had some great moments. I thought some guys gave us some really good minutes.""And at times I thought our offense was really good and got some great execution. Just not a consistent enough play on both ends of the court, but especially defense to win those caliber of games. Our effort against Texas A&M I thought it was super. We didn't defensive rebound well enough to win that game. The other two games, I just thought we played frustrated on the defensive end, and it affected us on offense at times."Check out the full show for more. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. In today's show, we'll explain Penn State's tweaks to the offense under the new dual coordinator setup with Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle. We're breaking down the game and how Penn State used subtle tweaks to the passing game that unlocked big plays. We're live moments after the game's conclusion for 60 minutes of postgame discussion.Penn State offense finally gets its explosive playsAfter months of frustration and conversation, the Penn State offense finally went off against a struggling Michigan State team. During the game, the offense hit explosive plays of 60, 53, 50, and 40 yards. Drew Allar hit a 60-yard pass to Omari Evans in a full-circle moment that echoed his second pass of the season against West Virginia to begin the year.Meanwhile, Kaytron Allen ripped off two runs of 50 and 40 against the Spartan's defense to reestablish the team's big-play prowess. Nick Singleton chipped into the action with a 53-yard screen pass, with a great block from Tyler Warren. Singleton capped off his day with a 14-yard burst in the red zone during the fourth quarter. However, things were close early; the team gained 308 yards at halftime but only 13 points. Penalties and sacks in the red zone stymied the scoring opportunities early. However, Penn State eventually showed they had the firepower to knock out Michigan State.Defense dominant once againAs expected, the Penn State defense was dominant once again. The starting unit pitched a shutout. The defense was relentless, with six sacks during the competitive portion of the game. Michigan State put together two potential scoring drives, but Jaylen Reed snuffed the first out with an interception. Adisa Isaac forced an intentional grounding pass from wide receiver. Alante Brown. From there, the team never mounted a threat to the Penn State defense. The starters forced seven three-and-outs and 74 yards in the game. However, injuries were a scare during the game. Defensive end Chop Robinson was stepped on during the first half's final play. JB Nelson came out of the first drive and wasn't seen again. Finally, Abdul Carter was injured and didn't return to the game. We're discussing those points and your thoughts on the Penn State offense and defense on the BWI Live Postgame Show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. It's also the second game without offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Head coach James Franklin fired Yurcich after the team's loss to Michigan earlier this year.So what was different last week, and what can we expect in the upcoming game against the Spartans? We'll discuss the plan of attack for the team when quarterback Drew Allar was under center before he was knocked out of the game in the third quarter. We'll also discuss how the game changed in the second half when backup Beau Pribula came into the game and operated the offense.Penn State game plan altered last weekWhile Franklin declined to discuss the specific issues with Yurcich's style during his Monday press conference, he did expound on how to build a good offensive game plan in college football."How tight can you get the game plan to allow the players to get enough reps versus all the looks in the game to play fast and assignment sound, but not too small that there is not enough things in the plan to give the defense challenges and issues. So that is always the constant battle. I remember when I first became a coordinator, coming from a west coast system the game plan was massive," he said. But with a collaborative effort on the offensive staff, led by tight ends coach Ty Howle and running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider, Franklin said he was pleased with the plan. They kept things lean and effective, which is what he learned in his career.Lean is effectiveMultiple times during his time at Penn State, Franklin reinforced the idea of Yurcich not trying to reinvent the offense each week."Not just the number of plays in the game plan, how many of those plays are new concepts, not the same play run from a different formation with a different motion. That's fine. How many of those plays are new concepts as well? What's the sweet spot for that as well? Typically that may show up on third down and red zone or with a trick play or shot.So all those things have to be factored in, and to me, that's where the best ones are. They're as tight as they can be with the game plan, but not so tight that it becomes simplistic and easy for the defense."On today's show, we'll describe how that played out on the field and give examples of Penn State's offensive staff putting the quarterback in a position to succeed more often and earlier in the game.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. We'll discuss the team's offensive plan with co-coordinators Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle in charge. We'll also take your question on the show as well.Penn State offense uglier than beforeThere were some signs of life early in the game but it didn't last long. Penn Staet's offense once again stuttered and shuddered through the first half against a stout Rutgers defense. Then early in the third quarter, quarterback Drew Allar took a shot on a designed run that knocked him out of the game. From that point on, Penn State didn't call a pass until they were up two scores.Even then, backup quarterback Beau Pribula decided to run the ball on the rollout. The Nittany Lions rushing game found its sea legs with Pribula in the game and the team was able to gash Rutgets for runs of 39 and 21 between Pribula and running back Kaytron Allen. Allen had another strong rushing day, leading the team during the competitive portion of the game with two touchdowns on the day.Penn State defense good enough to win the gameFor the second week in a row, the Penn State defensive ends, specifically Chop Robinson, shut down a rival passing attack. Robinson got an early pass rush win in the game, and then the Rutgers offense went into a shell. By the time the team was forced to throw the ball in the fourth quarter, Robinson had multiple pass rush and run defense wins for TFLs and sacks. We'll discuss his impact on the game, plus how Penn State has used linebacker Abdul Carter in a different way the last few weeks to help him make more impact plays for the defense. Penn State vs Rutgers Preview Penn State head coach James Franklin never gives specific injury updates or timelines, but this week he did give insight into when fans might see receiver Harrison Wallace back on the field."Yeah, we won't see him this week. But I'm not sure after that," Franklin said during his Wednesday press conference. As you might expect, the Penn State offense dominated conviersation this week among fans and the media. Franklin fired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on Sunday of last week and the team has formulated a new plan for the rest of the season. Running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider and tight ends coach Ty Howle were elevated to co-offensive coordinators (a title which they already had) and are now in charge of the offense. However, Franklin declined to discuss who would call the plays this week. During his weekly radio show, Franklin clarified a misconception about how things were going to go on Saturday. “I don’t think I said they were going to share play-calling duties. I said they’re both going to be involved, which I guess you could interpret a lot of different ways. But I’m just not going to get into how we’re going to do it,” Franklin said. “I got two guys that have been in charge. But it’s really been a collaborative effort with the entire staff, specifically on the offensive side of the ball to come up with a game plan."Penn State defensive adjustments? The Penn State defense played well enough to win but on their own. It's the final home game of the 2023 season and the last chance for Penn State to play well in front of its fans. We're looking at the five things that will help get the team, especially the offense, back on track against their opponent this weekend. The BWI Live Show will tackle the team's biggest issues, including the inconsistent passing game, maximizing the team's advantages in the trenches against Rutgers, and cracking another tough coverage scheme. We'll also look at two factors that will affect the game for the Penn State defense, including Rutgers running back Kyle Monangai.Penn State run defense on third downIf there's been one consistent and alarming flaw in the Penn State defense, it's the third and long run defense. The team's Prowler Package has been susceptible to giving up third downs on the ground in obvious passing situations. We'll discuss how this is a problem and not what you think when you examine the full information set. We'll explain how defensive coordinator Manny Diaz is taking a risk with Chop Robinson, Dani Dennis-Sutton and Adisa Isaac on the field simultaneously.Next, we'll look at the Penn State passing attack, and how it might get out of the mud it's been wallowing in for most of the season. While it won't be eclectic, there are some efficiency changes for this game, and the rest of the year that it can make to take advantage of situations, formations, and schemes. We'll discuss how Penn State can take the pressure off of Drew Allar and how they can attack the Rutgers linebackers. Finally, we'll discuss how the team can run at Rutgers to maximize its chances of getting positive runs with Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton.Five Things to get Penn State back on track against Rutgers#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On today's BWI Live show, we discuss what happened on the field that led to that decision. We'll take you through the game plan against Michigan, some of the major sticking points for the offense and what head coach James Franklin had to say about the matter.Join the show at 10 a.m. on YouTube for the exclusive video broadcast of the Keystone Kickoff Show, which is aired in partnership with the Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel. Game Day execution a big sticking point for Penn State staffThe Penn State offense developed a plan each week of how they were going to attack the opposing offense. But, accoring to Franklin, that plan didn't get executed correctly each week. When asked to clarify what he meant about getting quarterback Drew Allar into a rhythm early, Franklin said it was more than just that."As you can imagine, I have conversations about all the things I have concerns about, and more so than I speak in the press conferences."I think you guys have heard me come in and talk, whether it's openers, third down, starting fast, all these things are things that we've had lengthy discussions about and had a plan for, but a lot of the times when we got to the games, either we did not call the games that way or we did not execute the games the way we intended them to."Those things were asked for."We'll discuss how the Michigan game was a terrible example of getting Allar into rhythm and how Yurcich took what the defense gave him to the detriment of his passing game. Penn State running gameThere was a viral clip of Penn State running back Nick Singleton missing a potential touchdown run on the Nittany Lion's drive that led to a field goal. We'll discuss how that play is a microcosm of how Singleton is performing this year and what factors led to him not taking the cutback lane for a touchdown. It's a systmatic issue for Penn State who aren't putting their players in the best position to succeed. We'll also discuss how the offensive performance is inconsistent from even the stronger positions like tight end and the offensive line. Ep 625Breaking: Penn State Fires Mike Yurcich after loss to Michigan

Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKPenn State head coach James Franklin made a decisive move on Sunday after the team’s 24-15 loss to Michigan. The team announced that it had parted ways with offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich before the play-caller finished his third season with the team. Blue White Illustrated discusses the breaking news here, and on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Publisher, and veteran Penn State Football insider Sean Fitz discusses the move and the multi-faceted implications. If you want to check out his initial hot board of candidates, click here. With offseason news already swirling, it’s a good time to subscribe to Blue White Illustrated for 50% off the year’s price. The deal runs out soon.Penn State, Franklin, moving on from YurcichThe Nittany Lions have not had the success or continued production through three years under Yurcich. The team hired the former Oklahoma State and Texas coordinator after the 2020 COVID season. At the same time, the team entered a bad stretch of recruiting success on the offensive line and at wide receiver. The first cropped up in 2021 when the team struggled to consistently run the football. The team was 118th in the country, according to cfbstatscom in team rushing yards per game at 108.0.The next season, Penn State still struggled to run the ball but the deep passing game never materialized with veteran quarterback Sean Clifford returning for his sixth year of eligibility. The team still finished the year 11-2 with an impressive Rose Bowl win over Utah. The Class of 2022 carried the team to an impressive ranking in what many figured would be a down year for the Nittany Lions. The story coming into 2023 was that this was Penn State’s best chance to reach the college football playoff with a young, five-star passer in Drew Allar. The offense failed to show up in 2023 during big momentsBut that’s not how things have played this year. Penn State scored 15 points during the competitive portions of its two biggest games of the year. The offense managed six points against Ohio State before a desperation touchdown, down two scores in the final minute of the game. Then this last Saturday, they improved to the tune of 9 points against Michigan.Frustration and anger from Franklin boiled over after the game. For Franklin, calling out specific issues with the playcalling is a rare occurrence.“We’ve got to do a better job of calling a game to allow our quarterback to get into rhythm. That is critical. We’ve got to find easy completions for a quarterback to get into rhythm. That’s what everybody does. We’ve got to do a good job of that. And then on top of that, although there weren’t sacks, there were too many pressures and there were too many times where we were not creating separation,” The head coach said after the game. We'll discuss the situation and what comes next for the Nittany Lions, who are looking for the sixth offensive coordinator under Franklin at Penn State.Breaking: Penn State Fires Mike Yurcich after loss to Michigan#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The defense, while giving up big plays, held Michigan down for a good portion of the game. Third down run defense was a problem again for the Nittany Lions, who gave up a 22-yard touchdown on third and long to Donovan Edwards after the Wolverines ran the ball off the right side on third-and-long for a touchdown.Neither team was interested in throwing the football in this game. Michigan scored a field goal in the third quarter on a 13-play, 45-yard drive that lasted eight minutes and featured zero completed passes. That drive was set up by a critical Drew Allar fumble that set up the score. Those points were the first given up by the Penn State defense in the third quarter this season. Through the first 45 minutes of the game, the two teams combined for just 21 passing attempts. It was hot and cold again for the Penn State offense, who had two three-and-outs in the first half but also put together two five-plus minute drives that ended in points.A critical moment in the fourth quarterPenn State had a chance to strike early in the fourth quarter after the Penn State defense forced Michigan three-and-out from the shadow of the goal line. But special teams came up big on a questionable call on the return.Sensational returner Daequan Hardy returned the ball near the 50-yard line, but a holding call on receiver Malik Meiga resulted in a swing of nearly 20 yards. Penn State ultimately punted and gave the ball back to the Wolverines, yet again failing to mount an offensive threat late in the game. But the Penn State defense held stout and prolonged the Nittnay Lions' chances to close the gap on the next drive.Join the BWI Live Show to discuss the game and what you think led to the final score. While the legal case continues to evolve, we'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on the sidelines and how Harbaugh's absence can affect the team. We'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on game days and what Michigan will potentially be missing. Also, does this move give Michigan extra motivation? We'll turn to Hawkins to get a player-level understanding of how the team will likely feel about the situation. But the actual game still mattersWhile headlines off the field are one thing, the game is another. We'll discuss how the Michigan offense matches up with the Penn State defense and vice versa. You'll also hear features, look at the Big Ten Schedule for this week, and more. But what type of game are we in store for? Penn State head coach James Franklin knows how these things go."I think we're going to have to be patient. I mean, could this game turn out to be game where there is multiple touchdowns scored on both sides and it comes down to a one-possession game and more of a shootout?""Yes," Franklin said rhetorically."Is it more likely to come down to a low-scoring game and a battle and a one-possession game and four-minute, two-minute type situations at the end? Probably most likely."Franklin implored fans as much as his staff to embrace the game style and not get impatient for big plays or points when they're not there."So, for us, we got to make sure that we don't lose patience. There will be times where punting may be the best option. We just got to manage this game, and when the opportunities present themselves, we got to take advantage of it. We’ll pull critical information about how Michigan likes to operate and how Penn State can attack those processes on either side of the ball. Here’s an excerpt from that premium content. The threat of the running game and Michigan’s mystique as a run-first team have opened up some explosive options in the passing game. Most of the Michigan offense is vertical-based. MCcarthy’s arm strength and velocity on the ball come in handy in this over-the-top passing scheme. His average depth of target is 10.6 yards downfield, which is third in the Big Ten. While McCarthy isn’t chucking the ball deep as much as other quarterbacks, he’s shockingly far ahead in completion percentage. If you want to check out the complete article, click here. It’s also true to point out that Michigan has seen 224 run snaps in 2023. That’s the third-fewest among Big Ten teams.Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube! And then, we got a ton of recruits coming in on Saturday. That's the hard part, especially with it being a 12 o'clock game. That makes it challenging."But most of the recruits get the big picture and understand that there's a focus on the game."But I also think we try to communicate as much as we can with the recruits that, look, you just got to understand, we don't have a whole lot of opportunity to sit down with guys individually. Head coach James Franklin's squad put together its most complete effort against Maryland with a 51-15 win last Saturday. So, what elements translate from last week to this week? We'll discuss that and then break down the Michigan Wolverines on today's show.Join the show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube, and if you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illustratedhttps://bit.ly/3u8dilDto get inside access to find out what happens before, during, and after the game. We've got you covered each week with T-Frank's Film Room, where we break down the significant plays that decide each Penn State game. What can Penn State take from win over Maryland? Two offensive changes from previous games stood out in last week's win over Maryland. First, racing out to 21 points in the first half was a change for Penn State. Franklin counts that as a team effort."Starting fast was huge in this game. That first fourth-down stop, not only was that a huge play in the game from a momentum standpoint, the first big momentum play of the game, but then also the offense was able to turn that into a first drive touchdown," Franklin said. The second is that quarterback Drew Allar played with confidence and conviction we hadn't seen in quite some time. Franklin feels this has been coming with more experience from the sophomore quarterback."Yeah, I think obviously the more you play, the more comfortable you get and the more confidence you get, the more relaxed you can be. I do think being loose, being relaxed at every position I think is important. That comes with preparation and confidence, and then obviously how we play helps with that as well."Defense ready for rematch? For the last year, the Penn State defense has had to hear that they weren't big enough or good enough to play with Michigan in the run game. Have they put in the work to be ready now?"So first of all, I think we have been much more disciplined and consistent in gap responsibility. There has been times where we have tried to make plays and get out of our gap, and against good teams the ball will find the open gap.I think we're a little bit bigger. I think the size has helped us as well. We're a little bit bigger across the front, specifically the D-line. Not to the point where it's affected our ability to move. I think that's a big part of what we do as well, is our movements and our games," Franklin said. We'll discuss how the defensive line has proven over this year that they are ready to go and give thoughts on how the team will perform in that phase this weekend.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualWhat can Penn State take from its win over Maryland into game against Michigan?SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Join the Blue White Illustrated Live Show today at 10 a.m. as we discuss the last win for Penn State, James Franklin's press conference on Monday, and preview the upcoming game against Michigan.James Franklin press conferencePenn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Monday to discuss the upcoming game against the Wolverines. We'll discuss what the media asked Franklin and what his responses mean for the upcoming game. Senior Editor Nate Bauer and publisher Sean Fitz have extensive experience taking the correct meaning from Franklin's comments and explaining the nuance of the situation.Of course, the main topic of Monday's press conference was the Penn State run defense, which was gashed last year by the Wolverines. Franklin thinks his team is better in several areas than they were last season."I think we have been much more disciplined and consistent in gap responsibility. There has been times where we have tried to make plays and get out of our gap, and against good teams the ball will find the open gap," Franklin said."I think we're a little bit bigger. I think that's a big part of what we do as well, is our movements and our games."Penn State vs. MichiganOnce we conclude the look at Franklin's press conference, we'll finish the show discussing the upcoming game. We'll give you an early preview of what situations and matchups will help determine the game and which players will need to play their best for the Nittany Lions to get a victory. As he does each week, Franklin highlights the players they think are the most dangerous on each side of thel ball. Here are the players he gave this week. On offense, things start with quarterback JJ McCarthy."Their quarterback has been a differentiator for them, completing almost 76% of his balls. Also has the ability to make plays with his feet either running for first downs or extending plays," Franklin said.Join us at 10 a.m. on YouTube to be a part of the show!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State vs. Michigan Preview Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The team defeated Maryland on Saturday in a complete-team shutdown that featured another dominating defensive performance and a breakout game from quarterback Drew Allar.Join the BWI Live Postgame show to discuss the win and how the team performed on Saturday. We'll be discussing the schemes and plans by both teams that determined the game. If you haven't, subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't when we go live after every Penn State football game.Penn State pass game grows upAfter a late-game surge that helped the Nittany Lions defeat Indiana, Allar picked up right where he left off. The 6-5 passer looked calm and poised in the pocket against Maryland. That confidence resulted in three first-half touchdowns for the Nittany Lions. Allar completed 76% of his passes in the first half, and the offense converted 80% of its first downs on the way to 21 first-half points.Penn State head coach James Franklin has been happy with the way his young quarterback has progressed this season but was still looking for more heading into this matchup."I'm pleased with how it's going, but there is obviously a lot of room for growth there, not just specifically with him, but the pieces around him as well.""The last thing I'll say, because we've talked about this a lot, is I also think the explosive plays help. You know, when you're able to complete a ball like we did with KeAndre, the more times you can put that on tape, that affects the defense very similar to a mobile quarterback."Penn State completed those explosive plays against the Maryland defense and got support from players not named KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Receiver Dante Cephas had a breakout performance in the win with his most yards and catches of the season. Cephas had two touchdowns on the day and six catches for 53 yards.Defense rebounds for lights-out performanceAside from one drive, aided by a roughing of the punter penalty, the Penn State defense locked down the Maryland offense. Yes, Taulia Tagovailoa started the game 17-17, but the defense also sacked the Maryland quarterback four times. Also, halftime was good for the Nittany Lion's defense again, who shut out another opponent in the third quarter. Penn State allowed -51 yards rushing through three quarters and allowed only 15 yards in the third frame. We'll be discussing these topics and more on tonight's show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 616BWI Live: Penn State vs. Maryland | Five Things to Watch

The Penn State Football team takes on Maryland Saturday in College Park in a pivotal game in the 2023 season. While the Terps are a 5-3 team that has lost three straight games, they present a dangerous challenge to the Nittany Lions this weekend. On today's Five Things to Watch, we break down the matchups that will determine the game this weekend. We'll cover Penn State's rushing attack, Maryland's passing game, and the Terrapins front seven. Join the show at 10 a.m. to discuss the game and what you want to see from the Nittany Lions on Saturday. Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't miss any live content! Franklin aware of Maryland's passing attack Penn State head coach James Franklin laid out the game during his Tuesday press conference."They're an 11-personnel spread team. Guys that we have respect for is their quarterback, obviously. Wide receivers, No. 6 and No. 1, Jeshaun Jones and Kaden Prather, and running back Roman Hemby. We got respect for those guys.Other guys as well, obviously, but really kind of runs through their quarterback who has been playing there and been productive, owns every record that university has," Franklin said. We'll discuss the reality of Maryland's offense and how they operate schematically. Penn State offense faces unique matchupThe Maryland defense doesn't have one superstar, but the data suggests that its front seven is stacked with productive players. We'll sift through the information to point out which players, matchups, and schemes will determine the outcome of the game for the Penn State offense. We'll discuss the Penn State rushing attack's matchup with Maryland, how the Lions will fare against a robust pass rush, and how the receivers will fare against the Maryland secondary. But to me, it's a season that's going to look very different each week based on a lot of factors. Home, away, weather, environment, matchups. There's going to be a team where you say, on paper, you're supposed to be worse are supposed to be better, and the game doesn't play out that way because you got matchups that are in your favor or not in your favor. So there's just so many things that kind of go into it."Game Day CoverageGame day coverage starts at 12:30 on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. You can get their full insights from their Wednesday articles, but they'll also share thoughts on today's show.Maryland PreviewThere could not be two more directly opposed quarterbacks from a mindset standpoint. The firely and aggressive Taulia Tagovailoa has given Maryland a fighting chance each of the last three seasons he's been under center. New Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is a cool and methodical player who doesn't risk the football. For this weekend's matchup, Franklin knows that Tagovailoa can challenge his defense in multiple ways."Yeah, really good player," Franklin said. "Obviously, statistically, he's number one in every category at the University of Maryland. They've had some good quarterbacks, all the way back to Boomer Esiason, and Frank Reich, and a ton of guys that have played there. Obviously, the thing that makes him challenging is his, not only decision-making as a passer and the weapons they have around him, but then also his athleticism and his quickness and his ability to improvise. Those are the things that become most challenging. But, whenever you got a guy that's played as much football as he has, that's why I think there was so much confidence with [Mike Locksley] and those guys coming into the season, and why they're confident now, because they got a veteran, experienced, proven quarterback," Franklin said. We'll preview how the two teams match up and the major storylines that go into this game. On today's show, we'll discuss Allar's performance against Indiana, along with his teammates on offense. We'll review the run game and the defense as well.Join the BWI Live show at 10 a.m. on YouTube and join the conversation!Penn State pleased with Allar's progressionWhen building an offense, you can't solely cater to the quarterback's strengths. The ability of the personnel around him is also a factor in how you build an offense, according to James Franklin."The other thing obviously is being able to play to that quarterback's strengths. The challenge with that is there are so many factors that go into it. The offensive line, the running backs, the tight ends, the receivers play a major part in that," he said. But regarding where the team is, Franklin is optimistic about the development despite the bumpy road."I'm pleased with how it's going, but there is obviously a lot of room for growth there, not just specifically with him, but the pieces around him as well.""So all those things kind of factor into it. But I've been pleased with his development physically. Pleased with his development mentally. I think we got to do a better job helping him and making plays for him. He has to be more consistent with some things as well."Defense has a down performance but confidence is highDespite several blown coverages on Saturday, confidence in the defense remains high for the Penn State staff."I think there has been enough evidence over the season of who we are as a defense, and specifically who we are as a pass defense. When you play man coverage, are there some things that we can do technique and fundamental that probably wasn't executed on that play the way it should have been? Yes," Franklin said."But when you play man coverage as much as we do they're going to get you from time to time. The other one was a total blown assignment. I think there is enough body of work of who we have been as a defense to feel comfortable and confident with that."We'll break down the coverage busts by the Nittany Lions and the big plays that led to a closer game than most expected against Indiana this past weekend. Finally, we'll preview the Maryland Terrapins and what sort of team they'll bring to the field this coming weekend.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On today’s show, we’ll discuss Alex Tatsch, Jermaine Kinsler, Naeshaun Montgomery, and more. While he’s a 2025 prospect, Montgomery is a top receiver prospect and someone Penn State needs in a big way. How did things go this weekend? Join the show to find out.Game reaction and discussionEven in Penn State’s blowout wins, they’ve seemingly struggled to be consistent on offense. We’ll discuss the Nittany Lion’s offense on today’s show to dissect the good and bad from the game.On the bad side, the team went three and out three times and had several sub 25-yard drives during the afternoon. Yet after a costly turnover late in the game, the Penn State offense and Drew Allar responded with an emphatic 78-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 57-yard strike from Allar to KeAndre Lambert-Smith.So, was this an evolution from the offense or a one-off play? If it’s an evolution, did the way it happened to come as a relief to an offense that seems to play tight and afraid of mistakes?“No, but it was awesome. I enjoyed it. That was awesome. I wouldn’t describe it that way, but yeah, obviously Drew’s being able to sit in there and deliver that ball. KeAndre, being able to make that play and finish and stay in bounds was awesome. As you guys know, we talked about it enough. We talked about it a bunch. We’ve got to continue to be able to do that. So, that was awesome. It was awesome,” Penn Stae head coach James Franklin said after the game. We’ll also discuss the defense and their off-day on the field. Yet on Saturday, the defense gave up two explosive touchdowns of 90 and 69 yards in the first half.Free safety Zakee Wheatley was beaten in single coverage on the game's third drive, resulting in a catch and run of 90 yards for Dequece Carter. Next, the secondary miscommunicated on a blitz and allowed receiver Donaven McCulley to scamper free for another long touchdown. The bad day for the coverage team wasn't over. Sorbsy hit Omar Cooper Jr. on a 26-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to keep Indiana within three points. However, even on an off day the defense kept the team in the game. They got a timely stop on third down with six minutes left in the game to give the ball back to the offense with a lead and a chance to kill the clock.Offense continues to muddle alongThere were some good moments for the Penn State offense, including a 16-yard touchdown to Theo Johnson up the middle on a Cover 0 by the defense. Quarterback Drew Allar hit Johnson in contested coverage for a red zone touchdown. However, the team gave up multiple sacks and pressures on Saturday that, once again, kept the team off-kilter. However, the team still went three-and-out three times with another four-and-out in the game. With the surprising game pressure on them, the offense fell apart with the game on the line. Allar threw his first interception of the season with five minutes left, giving Indiana the ball on the 21-yard line. But not for long. After his first career interception, Allar uncorked a 57-yard touchdown pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith and connected on possibly the biggest pass of his young career.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The defense allowed only 20 points to one of the most dangerous teams in the country, so we'll discuss them, but the spotlight will be on Drew Allar and his teammates. Most importantly, can Penn State regain their identity? Head coach James Franklin thinks they got away from it last week."Yeah, I think we talked about staying true to our identity, and I thought we got a little bit away from that at times.""Somebody asked me earlier about our goal line package that we've been using, the three running backs and things like that that have been very successful in short yardage. We kind of got away from that."While Franklin acknowledged that the team's identity is grounded in the run game, his main point was that they are an efficient team."I thought our identity was staying on schedule converting on third downs and then either converting on third downs or going for it on fourth down situations. I feel like that had been our identity for the season," Franklin said"We have a lot of respect for their short-yardage defense and how they were defending it, but we did not do that. We did not either convert on third downs like we had been doing or put us in a situation where we were in fourth and short to go for it."Penn State has a chance to redeem itself in the final month of the season, playing Maryland and Michigan after this home date with Indiana.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 610BWI Live: Five Things that will show progress for the Penn State offense this weekend

The Penn State offense needs to adjust if they want to recover from their dysfunction that led to six points against Ohio State in the meaningful part of last weekend's loss. Raw point totals won't fix the Penn State offense against Big Ten basement dweller Indiana. The offense needs to force the issue and make some meaningful changes to how they operate on the football field. Today, on Friday's Five Things, we're running down the five adjustments that could help the Penn State offense achieve a better threat balance for the season's final stretch. Join the BWI Live Show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube to get your thoughts on the show as well. Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the show to discuss today's five things and take questions from the live chat. Penn State balance in the passing gameThe Nittany Lions have struggled to use the full field this year, relying on select areas and routes to win. Head coach James Franklin acknowledges that this is a problem. "Yeah, we've got to be able to attack the entire field. If most of our production is coming in similar areas of the field, then it makes you easier to defend. There's no doubt about it," Franklin said. We'll look at where the targets are going and what the production looks like in the under-utilized areas of the field. While offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich likely has plans to fix the issue, we'll take a stab at it too. Focus on the passing gameMost of today's show focuses on the Penn State passing game. The Nittany Lions don't represent enough of a credible threat to open up the running game right now. So restoring a balanced attack and credible threats is the critical fix. Franklin agrees that the team is behind in this area. "Yeah, we're behind in the passing game. I think we've shown some flashes," he said. Franklin believes that getting Harrison Wallace back up to speed and integrated into the passing game will help. However, the pass-catchers need to step up and it's something they've been told behind closed doors and now, publicly."I don't want to ever say anything's divisive between the offense and the defense. Or, a position group feeling like they're being called out. We do those things behind closed doors. But, the reality is, there's room for growth there." Franklin believes this week is a good chance to take a step forward and execute properly. "But, this is an opportunity to take a step this week and build confidence moving forward. I think there's guys in that room that have the ability to do the job and do the job at a high level. But it's about consistency physically. But, it's also consistency mentally."Join the show to find out what we think that will look like on Saturday. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Today's questions feature a lengthy receiver conversation, offensive performance improvement guidelines, and more. Penn State trying to turn the page from Ohio State lossPenn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Wednesday evening and tried to shift his focus forward to Indiana. However, the media was still interested in what happened last weekend against Ohio State. It's a delicate balancing act for Franklin to push forward but be a team-player with the fans and media. ""To be honest with you, we've had discussions about moving the press conference to Monday [from Tuesday] for a little bit of that reason, so we can move on and not keep doing this. Not keep going back and talking about it. I get [that the media] asks the questions. But for us., one of the ways to move on is to stop talking about it. And the hard part is [the media wants] to talk about it. Which, I get it. I totally get it." "But, it's kind of sending mixed messages. The best way to move on is to focus on the next opponent, learn from it, which we did on Saturday night, which we did on all day Sunday. But then, it's time to move on to the next opponent, learn the lessons from the game, make the corrections, and then pour all of our energy into finding a way to get a win against Indiana and playing well, so we can build that confidence and take it for the rest of the season."Penn State passing game The biggest question for the Nittany Lions this year is its passing game with a new starting quarterback and a thin group of proven wide receivers. Franklin admitted on Wednesday that this part of his team is lagging behind. "Yeah, we're behind in the passing game. I think we've shown some flashes. I think [Harrison "Trey" Wallce III]'s injury, when we didn't have a whole lot of proven guys before that; I think some guys that have kind of come in have transitioned a little bit slower than than we had hoped. But, this is an opportunity to take a step this week and build confidence moving forward. I think there's guys in that room that have the ability to do the job and do the job at a high level. But it's about consistency physically. But, it's also consistency mentally." Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Allar completed only 40% of his passes through the third quarter, thanks partly to four drops by his receivers during the game. The Nittany Lions only managed to get nine rushes apiece for Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton during the game, which accounted for 74 of Penn State's 186 yards through the same time frame. We'll break down why those things happened, what went into Penn State's total meltdown on offense, and what happens next.Defense plays same game as last yearOnce again, the Penn State defense held the line for most of three quarters but fell late thanks to the cumulative pressure put on them by the game script. The defense held Ohio State to 12 points through most of the contest, but a late turnover on downs by the Penn State offense set up Ohio State for the final go-ahead drive that led to Marvin Harrison's lone touchdown on the day.Speaking of Harrison Jr., we'll review how Penn State covered the superstar wideout and how Kalen King availed himself in the biggest matchup of the year. Finally, we'll review how a loss like this on a national stage either hurts recruiting or doesn't. The Penn State offense struggled to move the football all day, breaking their 30-point game-scoring streak. The Penn State defense once again kept the team in the game, holding the explosive Ohio State offense to ten points through three quarters.Join the BWI Live postgame show to discuss the game. Want to be part of the show? Drop your comments in the live chat to get your voice heard. We'll cover the team's issues on offense, the defensive performance from the Nittany Lions, and how Ohio State allowed the Nittany Lions to stick around in the game.Penn State offense fails to convertThe story of the game for the Penn State Nittany Lions was that they couldn't convert on third down. The team was 0-11 at one point early in the fourth quarter. Penn State had been a methodical offense that stayed ahead of the chains all year. But against Ohio State, that plan melted down.It was another sub-standard road game for quarterback Drew Allar as well. The sophomore quarterback got off to a rocky start, then the offense failed to protect him, with multiple pressures up the middle that forced throwaways. Allar ended the game under 60% completion percentage on the road for the third time this year. We'll cover what the Ohio State defense did to stop the Penn State attack in its tracks and force the offense into bad passing situations. The offense had one final gasp in the middle of the fourth quarter when head coach James Franklin elected to go for it on fourth down just shy of the 50-yard line. Allar was hit by Ohio State defensive end JT Tuimoloau, and the ball fell incomplete. The Buckeyes marched down the field for the nail-in-the-coffin moment.BWI Live: Penn State Comes up short vs Ohio State | Postgame Show#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Head coach James Franklin was still ambivalent about how much he'd play this weekend."Yeah, we'll see. He's missed a little bit of time. So obviously getting him back, kind of in the mix and greased up and ready to go. The good thing is Vega's played well. So obviously, be able to evaluate that throughout the week. It's the best team that Franklin's squad has faced this year. But do they need to be perfect against the Buckeyes to come away with a victory? Not so fast,"The reality is, confidence comes with preparing well. But, it also comes with experience. And, those guys have it. We preview the game on today's BWI Live Show. Join the Keystone Kickoff Show's exclusive video presentation on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We preview the Ohio State defense, offense, and where Penn State has advantages on Saturday.Penn State has to contend with the best receiver in AmericaWhile the Ohio State offense isn't what it's been in the past, the team still is incredibly dangerous thanks to Marvin Harrison Jr. We discuss how he can change the game in an instant. On Tuesday, Penn State head coach James Franklin broke down what makes him special."Well, I think number one, the thing that jumps out to me is his body control and ball skills. He's got the ability to contort his body in the positions and catch the ball effortlessly."I think that's the first thing. The other thing, he's just smooth and fluid. You know, a guy that you guys are familiar with that I think was smooth and fluid, similar to him is Jahan [Dotson]. The difference is this guy is doing it at 6'3", 6'4". It's interesting, you watch him on tape and he looks like he's got good size, but when you see him in person, he's a big dude."Critical Matchup for Nittany Lions interior O-LineWe also highlight an area that has performed well for the Nittany Lions this year. Can the interior of the Penn State offensive line, which will presumably be without starting guard JB Nelson, play to the same level that they've achieved against a very good defense? While we focus on the defensive line on today's show. Franklin explained the Ohio State defense and how it presents challenges in the run game with three safeties."When you're playing, say, a traditional 4-3, traditional 3-4, you got rules of how you account for the guys in the box. How you're going to block to the Sam, combo block to the Mike, combo block to the Will or you're reading the Will in the RPO.Now they got this extra safety like Ohio State is doing like Iowa State was the team that made it kind of sexy and popular out there. It's different than your normal rules of how you account for that guy in the run game.So that's where it can become challenging, is you're having to teach things different than you normally do," Franklin said.Join the BWI Live show at 10 a.m. on YouTube to learn more about the upcoming matchup between Penn State and Ohio State!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comIs Penn State more talented than Ohio State this year?
