On Today’s BWI Live show, we discuss how the linebacker position is shaping up through spring football. We’ll also discuss how Jaxon Smolik’s injury affects now third-string quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer. Join the show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube, or check out the replay embedded in this article.Penn State defensive adjustments a work in progressWhile Penn State fans are excited about Abdul Carter’s move to defensive end, the team still needs to sort out details about the move. Head coach James Franklin preached caution about the move being a slam-dunk positive for everyone involved this spring.“Moving Abdul to defensive end, everybody’s excited about but it has an impact on our linebacker room, too,” he said last week.We discuss the issues that moving Carter created for the team’s linebackers and what that group needs to do to make up for the loss of an impact player at the position. Franklin thinks that it will take time beyond spring football.“So hopefully, they’ll finish out the spring on a real positive and have a really good spring game and go into the summer with some confidence,” Franklin said. “And then again, a couple of weeks into summer camp, feeling like we have depth there. Because right now, ‘we’ve got to create some more depth there to feel good about.”Jaxon Smolik injury puts a new spotlight on Ethan GrunkemeyerBlue White Illustrated’s Ryan Snyder broke the news this week that backup quarterback Jaxon Smolik would miss extended time with an injury suffered this spring. During today’s Ask T-Frank segment, we dive into what this means for the team and four-star freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer. What should Penn State fans know about the former top-ten passer in the Class of 2024? We’ll discuss his spring so far.Freshmen who could contribute this yearFinally, we end the show discussing the Penn State freshmen who could have an impact and burn their redshirts this season. While Cooper Cousins is an obvious favorite to do so, who could join him? We make the case for running back Quinton Martin and several defensive players. However, there are fewer roles or spots for incoming freshmen than there were several years ago. We discuss that dynamic to end the show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. How will all of that shake out? With the shift to new Penn State offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki, is there a way to mitigate the loss of tackles Olu Fashanu and Caedan Wallace? We're talking about that today on the BWI Live Show. It's a deal exclusively for podcast and YouTube fans who want to try out the site.Penn State scheme could help mitigate the loss of Olu FashanuEarlier this week, we discussed the concept of working around the team's new tackle situation with first-time starters Drew Shelton and Anthony Donkoh or Nolan Rucci by leaning into what Kotelnicki did best at Kansas: run the football. Successfully deploying the ground game keeps the team out of obvious passing situations, which was the strength of Fashanu. But what if you didn’t need those skills the same way? We’ve talked about this previously, but true passing situation opportunities can heavily influence the perception of a player’s skills. Last year, Fashanu saw 142 of PFF’s true passing situation blocks in Penn State’s run-first scheme, which equated to 57th among all Power Five tackles. But Kansas had even fewer of those plays. Kansas left tackle Dominic Puni played in as many games as Fashanu and only had to block 86 times in obvious passing situations, which is tied for 122nd.Check out the rest of the article here.Penn State running back depthAfter discussing the offensive line and depth, we move on to the running back position. Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen are Penn State's offensive focal points. But if the team regularly uses both of them, they will need depth assurances for injury. We look into how Quinton Martin and Cam Wallace will compete for the third and fourth running back jobs behind the starters. Is there a path to the field for the freshman? We discuss Martin's receiving ability and what a role for the 6-1 freshman would look like this season.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comCan Penn State scheme around the loss of Olu Fashanu? | O-Line spring outlook Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 696BWI Live: Penn State's new defense explained through James Franklin's comments about one key player
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions football team will have a new defense this year under defensive coordiantor Tom Allen. It's a new system featuring new potential combinations. Or is it? Today on the BWI Live Show, we discuss how James Franklin's comments about Jaylen Reed last week unlocked our understanding of the plan for the 2024 defense. We'll take you through the history of Penn State's usage of a 4-2 defense and what potential combinations the team could have on the field this upcoming season. Penn State's new/old plan on defense Playing a defensive back as a third linebacker is nothing new in college football, whether it's called the Lion, Star, Predator, or any other name. In fact, former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz had the same plan for the Nittany Lion's defense when he first arrived in 2022. Like Diaz, Allen will play a third safety more often than they have in the last year and a half, according to Franklin's comments, to start spring football. "We have a number of guys that we feel really good about at the safety position. When you take [KJ] Winston and Jaylen Reed, those two guys have played a ton of football for us. They're both experienced guys, are both playmakers, are both big and strong enough to be physical aspects in the run game," Franklin said. Both players fit the bill to play a quasi-linebacker role, but Franklin cleared up who will play the Lion this year when talking about the team's third safety, Zakee Wheatley. "Zakee Wheatley is a guy that we're expecting to take a big step. He's had by far his best offseason. Not even close. That also allows us to maybe use Reed in the nickel position that we're going to call the lion position."What that tells us about the rest of the defenseFrom there, we can extrapolate where the rest of the safeties will line up and what this defensive formation will look like. We can also assume that if Franklin is talking about using it more, other defensive combinations will take a step back. However, the team still needs to have those packages figured out for when they're needed during the season. We review the team's base (4-3) defense and the nickel and dime options at cornerback for the upcoming spring football season. Finally we turn the focus to the offense and consider the team's options on offense. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State's new defense explained through James Franklin's comments about one key player Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 692BWI Live: Penn State spring preview- Andy Kotelnicki's offense will have a "different vibe"

To preview the spring period, we’re discussing what fans should expect from both sides of the ball on today’s BWI Live Show. We’ll go over several players who should benefit from offensive coordiantor Andy Kotelnicki’s scheme and how the offense will feel different this upcoming season. We’ll finish the show by discussing the camp battles that will determine the personality of the Penn State defense. Join the show today at 10 a.m. on YouTube, and don’t forget to subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. We’ll have post-practice highlight videos and James Franklin’s weekly comments. Penn State offensive vibe shift under Andy KotelnickiWe start today’s show by discussing the Penn State offense. We’ve discussed several of the different ways that Kotelnicki will bring a new dynamic to the Lion’s offense this upcoming season, but today, we’re highlighting the players who stand to benefit the most from his system. If you missed it, we’re discussing the article from earlier this week that outlined three positions or players that will see additional support. We highlight one particular position on the show. The bottom line is that Kotelnicki was excellent at manufacturing explosive plays from slot targets. When Kansas’ quarterbacks targeted players who lined up in the slot, the team averaged an explosive play on 24% of those snaps. Even from a non-rate perspective, Kansas produced 26 explosive passing plays compared to Penn State’s 15. They did that on 16 fewer passing attempts just to drive the point home. Check out the full article here. But beyond the players that the system helps, we discuss the style of offense that Kotelnicki has developed. We describe the “vibes” of the offense and what we expect for this upcoming season. Penn State defensive battleLastly, we cover the team’s defensive shift under new Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen. Today’s show details the spring camp battles determining the defense’s personality. The position battles in camp aren’t just about which players win battles locally but how that player stacks up to other positions on the roster. We preview the larger battle for the final starting spot and which players will represent their position for the right to play in the base defense. Ep 691Wrestling Show: Big Ten Tournament preview, Penn State chances of postseason crown
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDWelcome to Big Ten tournament weekend, Penn State wrestling fans. The No. 1 Nittany Lions look to win another conference crown this weekend in College Park, Md. It would mark their second consecutive one after ending a drought that dated back to 2019 in 2023. Head coach Cael Sanderson’s side has multiple top seeds and 10 entrants set to compete at the event.“I think everyone’s looking good,” Sanderson said back on Monday. “You know, we just have a couple more days of hard training, and then it’s just getting ready to compete and just go do what we do.“I don’t think anybody’s peaked yet. I think everybody has their eyes set on the bigger events at the end. But yeah, there’s some different things, everyone’s different. Obviously, different levels of experience. And then weight management is different. So that obviously factors into the training of each individual. I think our our guys are excited and at peace and ready to roll.”It goes without saying that all on hand are aiming to qualify for nationals. But, while that is the focus, there’s no question that the top topic of conversation throughout the tournament will be the health and ongoing status of Penn State 174-pound three-time NCAA champion Carter Starocci. He was hurt at the end of his about against Edinboro two Sundays ago. But, Sanderson seemed optimistic when meeting with reporters earlier this week.“We trust our trainer, Dan Monthley, and our doctors and as we’ve said, Carter’s a competitor and he’ll be good to go,” Sanderson said. “I think he’s doing good.“The first day was tough for him because we didn’t really know where he was and he was in a lot of pain. Usually, that’s a good thing. If you know knees and injuries and stuff, if there’s no pain that’s usually more of a concern because that means something’s no longer there. He’s doing good.”A new episode of the Blue-White Illustrated wrestling podcast starts with the latest on Starocci. From there, host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel offer a weight-by-weight breakdown of the tournament in addition to making predictions for how each Nittany Lion will fare.Watch the show in the embedded video player above. Want to listen to it? Podcast links: SPOTIFY, APPLE.Blue-White Illustrated will have complete coverage of the Penn State wrestling postseason push. The team will try to qualify all 10 starters for nationals at Big Tens. Then, it will take its contingent to Kansas City, Mo., for nationals March 21-23. Ep 690BWI Live: Five Burning Questions for Penn State Spring Football
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDPenn State football opens up spring practice next week, and today, on the BWI Live Show, we’re discussing five burning questions we have for spring ball. Join the show at 10 a.m. on YouTube as we go through the top things that Penn State football needs to find out about itself during the 15 practices in March and April. And of course, you’ll get premium inside information into practice and recruiting you can’t get anywhere else. YouTube viewers can use promo code PSU1 at sign up to get two months for one dollar. How quickly will Abdul Carter take to defensive end? We start the show discussing Penn State star defender Abdul Carter’s move to defensive end. The discussion centers around how quickly Carter can take to the position, not the chances of success. We discuss what factors will play into that transition on the show. Here’s an excerpt from the article outlining our five questions. How will he take to defensive line coach Deion Barnes’ teaching as a pass rusher? Carter has the physical skills and instincts to be an elite pass rusher. But learning the nuances of the position still takes time. That training has likely already started. Penn State defense under Tom Allen and the wide receiver roomSome of the other questions we discussed on the show deal with the new Penn State defensive scheme under new coordinator Tom Allen. We’ve discussed his tendencies and preferences at Indiana this offseason, but today, we reverse the question. How will Allen adapt to the talent at Penn State? Will he change aspects of his scheme, personnel deployment or alignments with more talented and well-rounded players? Finally, we discuss the top question for the spring. What will the Penn State receiver room do over the next two months? While we center the conversation around the top receiver and if the team can find a leader, the conversation goes deeper than that. What are the combinations of players that make sense? Who will fight for a spot in the two-deep, and will any of the team's young receivers step up to challenge the veterans? Join the show to hear what we think heading into the start of camp. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comFive Burning Questions for Penn State Spring Football Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 689BWI Interviews: Penn State quarterback Drew Allar discusses new offense, his areas of improvement for 2024
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDPenn State starting quarterback Drew Allar sat down with the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel this week to discuss several topics, including the team's offseason work under new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, his personal progress this offseason and what he thinks the team will be like this year, based on the offensive installation they've done so far.Check out his full conversation here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Spring football is just around the corner, and you don't want to miss practice highlights, coach interviews, and more!Allar discusses how the Penn State offense will feel different this yearOne of the major themes that both Allar and his fellow quarterbacks have expressed this offseason is that the offense will feel very different than last season. Former offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich used motion during his time at Penn State, but not the way Kotelnicki does. That's been the emphasis so far."I think there's gonna be a lot more things that we do on the front end for us that are going to, you know, make the defense communicate, and it's gotta be more beneficial for us. Like helping guys get open from a schematic standpoint and getting them better, favorable matchups in a sense, and just making the defense beyond on their toes and always making them communicate," Allar said."So I'm really looking forward to getting into spring ball and, you know, going against Coach Allen and their defensive system."What it takes to be greatIf there's one thing that sticks out about Allar's play from last season is that he wasn't a game-changing quarterback. From a broad view of production, Allar was good last year but didn't elevate his teammates beyond the issues that plagued the offense. We discussed what it takes for a quarterback to be great and if the Penn State starter thinks he's there yet."I think what makes a quarterback and Lee is you know, his work habits and his preparation, away from the facility. You know, doing the right things away from the facility, being on time to meetings, always being prepared, and really being like a coach out there on the field," Allar said when defining what makes a quarterback elite in his mind."And then, I think honestly, it's playing within the system, and then when things break down, just doing the best you can to take care of the ball and make those make those plays happen."#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State QB Drew Allar discusses new offense, his areas of improvement for 2024 Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ten Penn State Nittany Lions will run, jump, catch and participate in on-field drills in front of 32 team scouts this weekend. We’re previewing the event by giving one drill that will be important for each Penn State player on today’s BWI Live Show.Join us at 10 a.m. as we discuss each player’s scouting profile, and break down the potential of recent Penn State Class of 2025 commit Lyrick Samuel. Finally, we’ll discuss how the Penn State safety position is a perfect fit with new defensive coordinator Tom Alen.If you can’t join us live, check out the show’s replay on the Blue-White Illustrated YouTube Channel or embedded here in this article. One drill for each Penn State football player at the NFL CombineIt’s been a few years since Penn State has had a standout performance at the NFL Combine. The Nittany Lions have developed a reputation for consistently sending impressive athletes to the Combine under head coach James Franklin. We discuss what goes into that reputation and then preview which players might show out this week. Here’s an excerpt from the defensive breakdown earlier this week.Adisa Isaac – broad jumpThere is no great test for functional strength at the Combine. Doing a max squat would be dangerous, and that doesn’t even gauge explosive power as much as raw strength, which are two different things. But for an undersized defensive end like Adisa Isaac, the broad jump is a fine proxy. The broad jump measures explosive lower body power for the athlete. Isaac showed great power through contact last year and at the Senior Bowl, but putting a number to that will be informative.Expect him to stand out at the Combine in the rest of his testing drills.Offensive PlayersProjected top-ten pick Olu Fashanu doesn’t have to do any drill he doesn’t want to at the Combine because his stock is already high enough to be selective. But that doesn’t mean we’re not curious to learn certain things about his skills if he does participate. But the most interesting offensive athlete at the Combine is tight end Theo Johnson. The big-bodied pass-catcher needs to show he’s a dynamic athlete to make up for his inconsistent blocking. Here’s one area we focus on during the show.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Penn State max testing weekLater this week we'll step inside the Lasch Building weight room to see Penn State football put on a different kind of show. The team has max testing week this week and squats are the main attraction during the week-long test. However, the team is testing other lifts, including power cleans. Sophomore linebacker Tony Rojas released a video on Tuesday of his personal record on the lift of 350 pounds, which you can check out here. We'll discuss the progress of the second-year Penn State linebacker. It's also NFL Combine week where the former Nittany Lions will be putting on their own athletic show for scouts and GMs in Indianpolis. Spring Football Preview Max testing week means that spring football is just around the corner. The team will break winter conditioning and then go on Spring Break with the rest of Penn State next week. After that, football is officially back! We're getting ready for another round of Penn State football by power ranking the team's offensive positions ahead of camp. Which unit has the most promise? And which ones can gain the most ground? We're dissecting the offense under new coordinator Andy Kotelnicki this week. Check out next week's Tuesday show for a breakdown of the defensive unit. In February, the team goes through organized Winter Workouts that test each player's mental and physical capabilities. We discuss what that process is like from someone who has gone through it. Few people get the insight into what it's like to be a Nittany Lion at this time of year, and Tengwall tells listeners what the team is building instead of just muscle.Next, we discuss spring football and the offensive line. The team has three open positions at left tackle, center, and right guard heading into the year, so Tengwall previews each position and the players competing for a starting job.We discuss how hard it is for Anthony Donkoh to go from left guard to right tackle in a month, coming from a player who shifted between positions his freshman year, too. He'll give his thoughts on the center competition and what Nick Dawkins means to the team and the O-line room. We touch on left tackle, Drew Shelton's maturation into an expected starter, and the understanding that Penn State fans need to have with Shelton as he replaces an All-American.NFL Combine PreviewFinally, we discuss what makes Olu Fashanu such a great player. Tengwall played next to the future top NFL pick for two-plus seasons and had a front-row view of the talent fans, and media are discovering in-depth during the draft process. But Fashanu isn't the only lineman going to the NFL Combine this week. Ep 682BWI Live: How Will Penn State Replace Abdul Carter At Linebacker?
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State defense is undergoing some changes for the upcoming season and we’re previewing what that might look like during spring football. The BWI Live show looks at how the Nittany Lions may replace Abdul Carter at defensive end and what Tony Rojas playing Sam linebacker means for the spring. We’re also discussing the shift in how the team will play on the back end with new defensive coordinator Tom Allen taking over the squad. What will he prioritize from a defensive perspective in order to generate turnovers? And how does that affect the safety position? It’s all defense all day on the BWI Live show! Join us at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Friday to get the latest on Penn State football, recruiting and wrestling. If you can’t catch the show live, check it out on replay here, embedded in the article, or on the Blue-White Illustrated YouTube Channel.Penn State is moving Abdul Carter to edgePenn State made the decision this offseason to move its most famous defender to a different position. We’ve discussed the pros and cons of Carter’s move to the defensive end here on the site; now we add some context to that conversation on the show.https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/penn-state-linebacker-abdul-carter-moves-to-defensive-end/But, the inherent advantage of having Carter at linebacker was sneaking an extra edge defender on the field. The Penn State defense had a Bizzaro lineup in 2023, thanks to Carter and Kobe King’s size in the box. Both players checked in at 250 pounds, meaning that it was like having a bonus defensive lineman when either run-blitzed an interior gap. This doesn’t mean that young linebackers like Tony Rojas, Kaveion Keys, or Keon Wylie can’t play the run skillfully, but it does change the nature of the team’s front seven. Also, while Carter’s off-ball instincts weren’t exceptional last season, he became more proficient as the season wore on. His first quarter against Ole Miss hinted at a Micah Parsons-level bowl breakout before an injury ended his day early.Next, we dive further into the ramifications of moving Carter on the linebacker position. Will Penn State play three linebackers in 2024? Or will Allen shift the defense to a two-linebacker look? There’s plenty of ways this can go, which we discuss on the show.Penn State defensive shift in coveragesLastly, we detail some of the potential changes that Allen could make in the defensive structure. We discuss the difference between a man coverage-focused defense and the potential results of a zone coverage defense.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comHow does Penn State replace Abdul Carter at linebacker? Ep 678Recruiting Show: Penn State a leader in recruiting? | New RPM Pick for Penn State
This show orginally aired on Feb. 15.Thanks so our sponsor: https://myperfectfranchise.net/Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe recruiting world is quiet after a furious January where hundreds of prospects visited campuses nationwide for Junior Days. However, the news never stops in recruiting and even during a "dead period" there's always something moving behind the scenes. On today's BWI Live Show, we discuss several top recruits trimming their lists and, including Penn State, the return of a top recruiting assistant, and more. Join the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't miss any live shows, breaking news, or commitment videos. As always, you can watch our content on replay there or embedded in articles like this one. Penn State recruiting newsBefore diving into the news from the past week, BWI publisher Sean Fitz discusses Penn State winter media day. The Nittany Lions opened up the Beaver Stadium media room on Tuesday for reporters to chat with the second-year players in the program. Fitz shares the interesting nuggets and thoughts he found talking to the Class of 2023. However, fans are most interested in Fitz's most recent prediction in Penn State recruiting. The team may get its first receiver commit in the Class of 2025 with New York's Lyrick Samuel. Fitz picked Samuel to land with the program and discusses why he made that decision. Check out the show to see highlights from the Bronx native. Nittany Lions in the running for several top prospectsSo far, Penn State has built a solid recruiting class, mostly from regional prospects. But the team is still pushing to land top talent in the class. One of those names is edge rusher Darren Ikinnagbon. The four-star edge rusher out of New Jersey named the Lions among his top eight programs. What are the chances that defensive line coach Deion Barnes can land the 6-5 rusher? We'll discuss his recruitment and that of Georiga linebacker Mantrez Walker. Finally, we'll dive into the buisness of recruiting and how Penn State has changed under new athletic director Pat Kraft. Frank Bodani of the York Daily Record recently reported that Penn State's recruiting and overall budgets have skyrocketed since Kraft took over. That news coincides with the return of recruiting staffer Khalil Ahmad. Ahmad took a job with Syracuse this offseason, only to return this week. Fitz will explain Ahmad's importance to the program and how Penn State can use his regional ties to land several of the players we're discussing on today's show. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State a leader in recruiting? | New RPM Pick for Penn State Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 676BWI Live: Where can Penn State's linebackers and defensive tackles improve next season?
The Penn State football team is working hard in winter conditioning to improve its collective abilities for the upcoming 2024 season. This offseason, we’re examining one area that each unit can improve and one strength each position group brings back for the Fall. On today’s BWI Live Show, we’re discussing that series and looking at where the linebackers and defensive tackles can take a step next season. Check out the full show embedded in this article, or subscribe to the Blue-White Illustrated YouTube Channels to catch the show airing live at 10 a.m.Penn State linebackers are working on tacklingThere was one standout reason why Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter seemed to have a down year, despite some notable progress as a player in 2023. We dove into the number of missed tackles he had earlier this month. According to PFF, Carter whiffed on 28.1% of his tackles last season. That’s an alarmingly high number, which ranks fourth-most among Power Four linebackers with at least 250 defensive snaps. In fairness ot Carter, this number took a hit after he tried to play through an injury in the Peach Bowl and missed three tackles while hobbled. However, Carter is just the group’s headliner. On today’s show, we discuss which players at his position can improve their tackling and how the Penn State linebacker unit can take the step into superstardom after a great end to the 2023 regular season. Defensive tackles pushing the pocketThe Penn State defensive tackles came into last season as the team’s biggest question mark. Fans and media openly questioned their ability to stop the run. Yet it quickly became clear that the group was ready to play and became a team strength against the run in 2023. But there’s a new level of productivity this group can reach in new Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen’s defense. Here’s the start of that conversation. Hakeem Beamon (14) and Zane Durant (13) tied for 20th and 22nd, respectively, to lead the team’s defensive tackle position in total pressure. Coziah Izzard was right behind them with 12 pressures. Also, according to PFF, Izzard finished the season with four sacks, while Durant had three. Allen’s new system will likely emphasize defensive tackles getting to the passer by virtue of one key situation the group was largely excluded from last season. Check out today’s show for the full conversation on the team’s interior pass rush. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. But outside the walls of Lasch, the Big Ten is changing around them. Two major names joined Ohio State and Michigan recently, and today, on the BWI Live Show, we're talking about those additions. Chip Kelly left UCLA late into the offseason to be the offensive coordinator at Ohio State, while NFL defensive coordinator Wink Martindale left the pros to join Michigan. How will those changes late in the cycle affect Penn State? He's had a long career as a starting left tackle in the NFL, but not every Nittany Lions fan celebrates him like they do other successful players from the program. We discuss the lineage of left tackles under head coach James Franklin and how his time in Happy Valley colors the way fans feel about him. That conversation then spins to include Rasheed Walker, who had a similar story arc at Penn State before leaving for the NFL. Both players were ultra-talented but never fully realized their potential before leaving for the pros. Now, Walker is the presumed starting left tackle for the Green Bay Packers.Does Penn State have the depth and talent to push its top players at the position to be their best selves? We discuss that history and how Olu Fashanu, Drew Shelton, Nolan Rucci and Anthony Donkoh fit into the picture.Ohio State and Michigan disruption - Does it change anything?Penn State's place in the Big Ten rankings may be in upheaval this coming year. Where will the team fall in the rankings with the influx of former Pac-12 schools? But it's not just Franklin and the Nittany Lions that experienced attrition this offseason. Ohio State just named a new offensive coordinator, in former UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. Michigan has lost talent on and off the field after Jim Harbaugh took some of the staff to the LA Chargers. So, does any of that change Penn State's chances of finishing at the top of the conference? We discuss that and the team's chances of making the 12-team playoff if they finish fourth.BWI MailbagAs always, the last segment on our show is for you. Ep 671BWI Live: Where Penn State QB Drew Allar shined in 2023 and why it matters
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDAs always, when a quarterback doesn’t have immediate and resounding success, fan bases tend to fracture around the topic. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was good last season but didn’t play his best in big games, nor did he play with a consistently improving arc throughout the season. Yet, there was good in his play when you sift through his performance, and that’s what we’re talking about today on the BWI Live Show. Where did Allar shine in 2023, and what does that say about his ability to play better this upcoming season? We’re discussing that, plus talking about more quarterbacks to end the show. Penn State made the top four for four-star 2025 passer Matt Zollers. Penn State must contend with national powerhouse Georiga for his services, but what exactly does Zollers do? We’re discussing his highlight tape to see why this latest Nittany Lion prospect is such a rising star. Join the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m. on YouTube Tuesday through Friday. If you can’t, catch the replay on the channel or here on the site embedded in the show article. Allar one of the best at a hard skillOn today’s show, we discuss a strong point in Allar’s play that isn’t obvious to fans during a game. We break down how well Allar played when getting to his second read on a play. We’ll explain what that means and why it’s an important factor in predicting his success as he grows in the position. Here’s part of that answer from the article detailing Allar’s strengths. Every play, regardless of concept, scheme, or coaching philosophy, has a starting point. There’s a route or route combination that the quarterback should look to first. But what happens when that part of the play won’t work? Most passing plays have more than one concept baked into them, and the quarterback can either go to that or make a play with his feet.Today, we’ll focus on Alllar’s ability to play within the scheme when his first read isn’t there. This is a facet of his game that we highlighted repeatedly during our film review of the offense in 2023 and is a primary reason why I believe Allar can still be a transcendent quarterback despite the lack of immediate returns to that end.Check out the complete article here. https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/news/offseason-optimism-where-penn-state-quarterback-drew-allar-shined-in-2023/Penn State working hard to land two quarterbacks in 2025Lastly, we’ll discuss the type of player Penn State is pursuing with Zollers in the Class of 2025. What sort of skill does the 6-3 quarterback possess? And what style of Penn State quarterback does he most closely relate to? We’ll break it all down in the show's final segment. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Penn State football finds itself on the ship headed toward the future. But what does that future look like? Find out that, plus hear the BWI Mailbag that ends the show!If you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube so you don't miss our live shows, programmed videos, and breaking news. As always, you can check out the replay on the channel or embed it in the BWI Live articles. The future of College footballWe spend the first third of today's show discussing how college football has been masquerading as something different than the NFL, its professional counterpart. Bauer lists why he thinks the changes that will take place in the sport over the next several years will finally unmask the sport for what it has been for years.Where does Penn State fit into this? Will the Big Ten change its model of team acquisition and start shedding less viable programs? According to Bauer, it's all on the table.Penn State defensive end roomAnother significant change for Penn State this upcoming year is at defensive end. While Dani Dennis-Sutton will likely step into the starring role after two seasons building to this moment, the other position remains unclaimed. Defensive ends Amin Vanover and Zuriah Fisher are the veterans who have the inside track to the spot, but who else factors in? Will Abdul Carter see a meaningful change in his usage? Or Will sophomore Jameial Lyons fall in Dennis-Suttons' footsteps. We discuss those ideas and the other variables that will present themselves in spring football.BWI MailbagAs always, the second half of the show is reserved for you. We’re bringing you the best recruiting content this offseason.Penn State gets a five star player in final rankingsFor the second time in three seasons, one of Penn State’s offensive line commits has earned a fifth star in the final recruiting rankings. Erie native Cooper Cousins skyrocketed up the rankings this fall after a dominant performance during the All-Star season. Recruiting Insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will discuss where Penn State’s top targets landed in the On300. Here’s what On3 national scout Cody Bellaire said about Cousins.“Cooper Cousins’ tape is filled with pancakes and tossing defenders out of the club,” On3 National Scout Cody Bellaire wrote following his All-American week. “With that said, we knew he would be physical and feisty, but we didn’t know just how violent he would truly be when facing some of the top competition in the country. Throughout the week, Cousins was powerful at the point of attack. He finished blocks in the run game and was battling through the whistle during one-on-one’s. His movement skills were on full display during 9-on-7 and team periods. We also discuss Jon Mitchell’s ascent back to the top 100 in the final On3 Rankings and where the rest of Penn State’s nine prospects landed on that list.Penn State Junior Day PreviewPenn State hosts its final Junior Day before the dead period closes down recruiting for the month of February. We’ll discuss which regional prospects coming to Camppus this weekend are most important or interesting. The player that stands out most is quarterback Matt Zollers. Snyder explains that while most junior day visits aren’t as critical, the quarterback differs. He also delves into why Zollers, in particular, is a critical visit this weekend. We’ll also discuss regional receiver Jeff Exinor out of McDonogh and his fit with the program. Snyder gives a stat about receiver recruiting that is eye-opening. Lastly, we preview the 2026 class with Harrisburg offensive lineman Kevin Brown. Thanks to our sponsor: https://myperfectfranchise.net/Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilD#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 664BWI Live: Which young Penn State players need to develop this offseason?
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions are a developmental team that won't solve their problems through the transfer portal. That's what head coach James Franklin said in the lead up to the Peach Bowl. Yes, the team does try to find select players to fill specific needs, but the team still believes in internal development. So on today's BWI Live Show, we're discussing which players that didn't have big roles last year, need to take that step. We're also breaking down a unique opportunity for the team's defensive players. A certain position hasn't been open for three years, but thanks to graduation, is finally open. We'll discuss how good Curtis Jacobs and Daequan Hardy were in covering the slot for Penn State. If you haven't yet, subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel so you don't miss any of our live and breaking news content. We'll also provide you with coaches interviews and shows featuring wrestling and basketball.Penn State slot coverage is an opportunity for a new batch of playersFor the past three seasons Jacobs and Hardy have split the duties as the primary slot defenders in Penn State's defense. On today's show we're talking about the article featuring these two from last week. Here's an excerpt. While Jacbos’ contributions as a coverage linebacker in the flat are harder to quantify, Hardy’s contributions are clear. No Big Ten cornerback had more third-down coverage snaps than Hardy over the last three seasons. Despite a rough start to the 2022 season, Hardy allowed a passer rating of just 50.9 into his coverage since 2021. No player with more than ten targets can boast such a low rating allowed, and no player saw more third-down targets than Hardy. We'll explain how the team can replace these two and how Tom Allen's defense could potentially cause some changes to the type of player filling this role.Owen Aliciene breakdownIf you haven't you can check out T-Frank's Film Room on new tackle commit Owen Aliciene. The Penn State Class of 2025 prospect joined the Nittany Lions after the team's first junior day of the new year. We'll discuss his talents and where he fits in the recent run of tall tackle prospects for offensive line coach Phil Trautwein.Which Penn State players need to develop? The team is deep into the offseason conditioning program, building themselves into the team they will be for 2024. But which players are critical for the team to see grow? There are some clear holes on the roster for a young player to fill in 2024 and some positions need competition to create overall growth for the team. We'll highlight the players that weren't starters in 2023 who need to be contributors next year, such as Tony Rojas, Omari Evans and Zion Tracy.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comWhich young Penn State players need to develop this offseason? Ep 661BWI Live: Grading Penn State's Winter Transfer Portal Class
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions haven’t closed the books on the transfer portal for 2024, but the first chapter is done. Today, we’re reviewing the staff’s work through the winter portal period and giving out grades for their effort. Join the BWI Live Show at 10 a.m. to discuss the team’s portal work based on this article from earlier this week. You can also watch the replay on the BWI Live YouTube Channel, or here on the site.Penn State Winter Portal ClassAs we saw last year with Penn State’s winter portal additions last year, it doesn’t guarantee that a player will be a successful addition, but it does give them the chance to be one. Having players on campus for spring football allows the team to integrate pieces into the offense and defense more seamlessly for the upcoming year. It also allows the staff to better understand the competition in each room. That’s a significant reason why we’re singling out this portal window. The biggest needs on the team are on the offensive side, with tackle and receiver lacking veteran presence at these two key positions. The red letter, exclamation point, need for the Penn State football team has been evident since about the midway point of the 2023 season. The team needs an infusion of veteran dependability outside. While a dominant lead dog would be great, you don’t expect that out of the portal unless you’re willing to play with the big dogs in college football.Since writing this, veteran receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith has made it clear he intends to be part of the team for the 2024 season. We’ll assess how the team’s retention and acquisition could play out this year.Offensive tackle departures create massive hole on rosterThe team lost significant experience and skill with Olu Fashanu and Caedan Wallace departing for the NFL. The team has been grooming Drew Shelton for this moment, but the rest of the roster is still very young. Enter redshirt sophomore tackle Nolan Rucci from Wisconsin. Can he fill the void?Defensive line additions through retentionLike the receiver, the team held on to its veteran depth with Hakeem Beamon, Coziah Izzard, and Dvon Ellies all returning for the 2024 season. We'll address the impact of that move on the team's ability to maintain a defensive personality trait.Penn State needs cornerback bodiesNot only did the team need to add veteran experience to the room, they needed to add bodies. Just six players were listed as cornerbacks on the initial 2024 spring roster before the addition of A.J. Harris and Jalen Kimber. We'll discuss what each player brings to the team for this upcoming season.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 658BWI Live: Assessing what Penn State is getting from it's transfer portal commits
Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKCheck out the site too! - https://bit.ly/3u8dilDThe Penn State Nittany Lions have been active in the transfer portal for the last week, acquiring several former high-profile recruiting targets from Big Ten foes. On Today’s BWI Live Show, we’re discussing what both Julian Fleming and Nolan Rucci bring to the table from a skill perspective based on their film. Join the show on YouTube or on replay here on the site.Penn State getting upside with Nolan RucciThe first part of today’s show will center around BWI’s assessment of Nolan Rucci from his bowl game film against LSU. Here’s a portion of that article from earlier this week.It seems Rucci’s physical talent hasn’t been accentuated by great coaching based on how unnatural it seems. Despite that, he’s fast and fluid enough to win. Furthermore, Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein is known as a detail-oriented coach in regards to fundamentals. While we’re just skimming the surface of those skills, it seems like Rucci could quickly turn into a plus-pass protector. We’ll discuss more of the context around Rucci’s play and what sort of player they’re getting out of the portal from Wisconsin. The Badgers have gone through several radical changes over the last several seasons, and the stereotypes about Wisconsin linemen are not the same as they used to be.Fleming provides a veteran presenceWhile there’s little film on Rucci, Fleming is another story. The former Penn State top receiver target has extensive film and playing time at Ohio State. But what does the tape say about his usage and production with the Buckeyes? We’ll discuss his talents, what sort of athlete he is and how he could figure into the Penn State passing attack this upcoming season. With one year of eligibility left, Fleming is trying to make an impact now.Wide receiver discussion continuedHowever, the issues surrounding the wide receiver room aren't over. Penn State fans want to know why the team had so many problems getting production out of its wideouts in 2023. We'll discuss the multiple factors and nuances of the situation that ultimately led to the team declining to target the position for the final three games after offensive coordiantor Mike Yurcich was fired. We'll also discuss how new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki fits into the equation and how he can potentially fix the problem.Lastly, we examine the hole in the transfer portal roster at cornerback. Penn State is pursuing several players at the position. We'll give you a brief breakdown of A.J. Harris and how he could fit into the room if and when he commits to the program.#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Who will be around for winter conditioning and spring football? We got a sense of that answer on Monday, with an updated roster coming from the program. We'll discuss that, transfer portal activity and the national championship game from last night on today's BWI Live Show. Check out the show on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube channel, or the replay on the site. Penn State roster updateThere was still a lack of clarity about certain players and their intentions for their future with Penn State football. Two of them, defensive tackles Hakeem Beamon and Dvon Ellies made their intentions known last week that they were returning for another year with the program. However, several veterans hadn't made their plans known, including the team's maligned receiver room. Is KeAndre Lambert-Smith coming back for another season? How about transfer Malik McClain who struggled to see the field last season? While some players are assumed to return, it's difficult to make that assumption in today's college football. Senior Editor Nate Bauer had a report last week about who would be back and wrote about what he knew. Today, he and publisher Sean Fitz will discuss that on the show. Portal review The transfer portal window is still technically open but with most of the program's targets in-house we'll review this portal recruiting class too. How did Penn State do with their efforts? Join the show to learn more about Nolan Rucci, Julian Fleming and the rest of the team's additions. The team made sublte changes over the last month that culminated in the team's approach in the 2023 Peach Bowl. While new offensive coordiantors Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle didn't change many plays, they did change some key elements of the offense that we'll discuss on today's BWI Live Show. Who is seeing the offensive targets changed took an even more dramatic shift at the end of December, which we'll explain today. We'll also discuss how that shift narrowed the focus of the offensive attack in a way that made things harder for quarterback Drew Allar. Finally, we'll discuss the team's defensive mentality after the first drive. We'll look into how the team performed to understand if there was an impact of former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's absence.Penn State defense set up to failThere's no doubt that Penn State's loss of it's top two corners and best defensive player in Kalen King, Johnny Dixon and Chop Robinson. We break down how losing Dixon and King affected the Penn State defense's schematic choices. From there, we'll discuss how Abdul Carter's injury further drove a nail in the coffin of Penn State's defensive efforts.Next, we'll highlight the players who did a good job despite giving up over 500 yards of offense to Ole Miss. Did Cam Miller and Zion Tracy show anything on film that should make fans feel better about the day they had covered Ole Miss' receivers? We'll also discuss how Abdul Carter was playing before his injury in the second quarter.Passing attack has issues before third quarterWhy didn't Penn State get the ball to running back Nick Singleton more on Saturday? We'll detail how the game flow radically altered the plan in the second half. Penn State offenseThe Penn State offense improved upon it's other performances against top-15 teams in postseason play, putting up 17 points in the first half and keeping pace with Ole Miss' wide open attack. But the team's adjustments out of halftime proved to be catastrophic. The team managed only nine plays on three three-and-outs during the third quarter, while Ole Miss poured on 11 points. By the time the team recovered in the fourth quarter, the game was all but over. Quarterback Drew Allar threw for 295 yards in the loss, but was once again posted a sub-50% completion percentage in the game. We'll discuss his role in the team's offensive struggles and then discuss the other factors that led to the team's inability to put meaningful pressure back on the Ole Miss offense. Defense puts on its worst performance of the seasonWhile the offense struggled for meaningful moments late in a shootout, the Penn State defense was the real problem for the Nittany Lions on saturday. They gave up 544 yards of offense in the game, including 258 yards passing in the first half. We'll discuss what no-win situation the opt-outs and injuries put interim defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter in. We'll also discuss the future of the defense and how Penn State can rebuild its defense next season under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen. As it does with a win, the loss puts a certain spin on the upcoming season. Should Penn State fans be less optimistic about the future after the team's performance in Atlanta?
