Penn State leans on young QB in primetime winPenn State entered halftime up 14-7 but the Nittany Lions drove down into the redzone twice and came away with zero points due to missed field goals from Sander Sahaydak, who lost his job at halftime to transfer kicker Alex Felkins. Despite the fanfare of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen coming into the game, Allar was the star. The first-time starter showed great poise and vision during his debute, completing over 70% of his passes on the night. Allar finished the game with 325 yards and three touchdowns. But Allar didn't compile short passes to get his yards. He averaged 15.5 yards per completion, pushing the ball downfield. On the other hand, the offensive run game played the efficient supporting role against the Mountaineer defense. Allen and Singleton combined for 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 combined carries. The offensive line opened impressive holes and put in a positive effort to start the season. https://twitter.com/ThomasFrankCarr/status/1698136320256692705Defense gets off to shaky start, rights the shipThe Penn State defense, a highly-touted group of playmakers, got off to a rocky start. The defense only gave up seven points by halftime but gave up 69 yards in the first two quarters. West Virginia was also aggressive on the night, going for five fourth downs during the competitive portion of the game and making two short conversions. Want to share your reactions to the game? Here's a snippet from this week's explanation of the running game and passing game with quarterback Garrett Greene. The zone running scheme, especially outside zone, is essential to fold into the passing conversation. A large portion of the West Virginia offense last year was built around the RPO and read-option concepts off of the running game. The outside zone is an aggressive lateral rushing attack that forces the defense to flow in one direction with the offensive line. West Virginia’s line is good enough that you have to respect their ability to out-gap you up front. But off the back of this system, head coach and offensive coordinator Neal Brown pairs these secondary concepts. This causes a shearing effect on the defense, where most defenders have to follow the play. But the backside corners and safeties are still responsible for the screen game. Next, the offense adds Greene’s rushing ability slows down backside pursuit from the unblocked defender as well.On today's show we'll break down these concepts with visuals and then build off of that to explain how the Mountaineers passing attack functions with Greene at quarterback. Finally, we'll explain how Chop Robinson, Kalen King, Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs and the rest of the Penn State defense can make West Virginia one-dimensional.Join the show to ask questions and give your comments to T-Frank live on air!#PennState #NittanyLionsJOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State vs West Virginia: Five Things to Watch with the Nittany Lions Defense Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 566BWI Live: Penn State LB Curtis Jacobs recaps camp and previews Penn State vs West Virginia

Penn State linebacker Curtis Jacobs joins Thomas Frank Carr to discuss training camp, his teammate's progression this offseason, and preview the game against West Virginia on Sept. 2. They discuss Kobe King's advances as a linebacker, and Jacobs gives his thoughts on the offense and how the young quarterbacks have progressed. He also shares how Manny Diaz coaches his players to understand things from an emotional and tactical level.Check out the video here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel. Get ready for game day by subscribing to Blue White Illustrated. We'll be hosting a live 90-minute tailgate show with former Penn State defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins three hours before each home game. Jacobs ready to answer the questions There's no doubt that Penn State's defense has gotten praise this offseason from local and national media. It's a talented group of players, and Jacobs says that while he's pleased with how training camp went, now is when the real fun starts. "I'm feeling great. This is my favorite part; being able to get out there and compete good-on-good. Now it's even better. We get to actually hit quarterbacks, get on the field, and really be violent. I'm excited to show off what this defense can do."He also gave a scouting report on the Mountaineers offense and what he's seen from the groups he focuses on. "I think they have a really good offense; Very athletic and a great quarterback. He's good at seeing things, and he likes to take off. He's really good with his feet. Also, I always take a deep dive into running backs and tight ends; those two groups look really good," Jacobs said. Can Penn State's speed counter West Virginia's scheme?Jacobs says that the Penn State defensive tackles, the group under the hottest spotlight this offseason, are playing with a chip on their shoulder. After a month of internal competition, the defense is ready to go up against a strong running game from West Virginia. "I have tremendous faith in my D-line and linebackers and our front seven. We've been attacking one of the best lines in the country ourselves here at Penn State. I feel like we're ready for a challenge and to attack on Saturday."The main way they'll counter teams this year? Whether it's run or pass, Penn State's elite team speed will lead the way. "O-linemen are mainly powerful in their box, in their framework. When you have fast guys, [they] can get on those edges and it makes it hard for those guys [linemen] to come out and get you in the space that there is on the football field. I feel like speed is tremendously important, and it can be disruptive in the run and pass game." Breaking down zone rushingFor Jacobs, defense comes down to simplifying what he sees and blocking out the noise. Whether it's read options, RPO schemes, or zone running concepts, he's watching his film and then relying on the defense rules to help him play fast. However, he explained what the West Virginia offense tries to do when they play inside and outside zone concepts. "They want to get you out of our gap. A lot of times, that stuff is masked up by shifts and motions and all that stuff. But really, they want you to not focus on what you're seeing and get distracted by other things. Finally, Jacobs talked about how the defense has progressed this season. He shared a quote from defensive coordinator Manny Diaz who explained how the team should play as a unit instead of trying to make plays individually."We've only gotten better because we play for one another. We make sure that we have each other's back. Coach Manny always says you can't take money out of your teammate's pocket. You've got to know your assignment and execute your assignment so that you can make a play, but sometimes so your teammate can make a play," Jacobs said. Ep 564BWI Live: Penn State vs. West Virginia Preview - Five Thing to Watch When Drew Allar has the Ball

Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube: https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKWe covered a lot of ground this week when previewing the West Virginia defense for Penn State's season-opening game on Sept. 2. If you haven't yet, check out the preview of the running game and the passing game from earlier.Today on the BWI Live YouTube show, we're condensing that down into five things you should watch for when Penn State has the football. How will the offseason storylines for West Virginia affect the matchup with Penn State next weekend? We'll discuss how the team tried to rebuild its defense and the potential problems that will cause. Then we'll discuss the mak up how the Mountaineers will try to attack probable starter Drew Allar and the rest of the offense. From there we'll discuss the best way that Penn State can attack the defensive structure. Join the show today at 10 a.m. Live on YouTube to discuss the matchup and to get your questions and thoughts on air. If you haven't yet, subscribe to Blue White Illutrated's YouTube channel.Setting the scene for what Penn State will faceSome teams build their roster through recruiting and some dip heavily into the transfer portal to fix problems. While West Virginia likely wants to recruit and develop talent, they've had to bring in waves of transfers over the last two seasons to address immediate needs. We'll review which players they selected to join the program and how those players fit into the scheme. Some even have a Penn State connection.Next, we'll look at a stylistic difference West Virginia uses, unlike the typical attack that Penn State sees in the Big Ten. The Mountaineers will drop eight and only rush three lineman more than any Big Ten team from last season. How does that affect Allar? And what can we take from last year that gives us a clue about how he can perform in this situation? We'll look at that.Compounding issues for WVUNot only did West Virginia bring in a healthy dose of transfers, but defensive coordinator Jordan Lesley said this spring that the team plans to lean on its young linebackers to play in 2023. With some players not arriving until the summer, how sound will the Mountaineers defense be in week one? Youth and unfamiliarity may lead to certain issues for the team. How could Penn State attack?Lastly, we'll look at last season's data to understand which players, schemes, and formations caused West Virginia the most trouble. Then, we'll translate that information and examine which Penn State players can cause the most damage. Ep 550BWI Live: Penn State Linebacker Curtis Jacobs Joins the Show

Penn State football takes the field on September 1 against West Virginia to open the 2023 season. It’s a highly-anticipated year for the Nittany Lions who are an offseason favorite of the national media to push for a College Football Playoff spot. One of the key contributors to the Penn State defense is linebacker Curtis Jacobs. He joins the BWI Live YouTube show to discuss the upcoming season, along with other topics. Join the show live at 7 pm to ask Jacobs a question! Host Thomas Frank Carr will field select questions from fans and members of the Blue White Illustrated Lions Den. Also, be sure to subscribe to BWI on YouTube so you know when we post special shows and breaking news. Penn State, Jacobs in line for a big season. One of the major reasons for optimism on defense is that Jacobs, a third-year player decided to return for another season at linebacker instead of opting for the NFL Draft. T-Frank and Jacobs will discuss that decision and how he arrived at it. They’ll also discuss Jacob’s thoughts on the team and preparation this offseason. Jacobs has spent the offseason preparing himself mentally and physically for the upcoming season, which could be a breakout performance for the fourth-year linebacker. “I’ve really dove deep into film study. I know I’ve been a film guy, but I really looked into NFL schemes and other teams’ schemes; just trying to learn offense at this point,” Jacobs said at Lift For Life.“I’ve been watching a lot of pass-rush stuff too. So I’ve been watching a lot of Michah [Parsons] and Von Miller. I’ve been watching a lot of those guys and how they get to the quarterback. That’s one of the most important plays in football, knocking the quarterback off the spot.”Jacobs is now ten pounds heavier than he was at this time last year, with his listed weight at 238 pounds. The veteran linebacker split time between positions last season after the emergence of freshman Abdul Carter. Jacobs was third on the team last year with 29 solo tackles and chipped in 23 assists, according to Penn State’s official stat book. He also came in third with 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. Jacobs was also a standout coverage defender at both linebacker positions. According to PFF, Jacobs finished the year with a 61.0 NFL passer rating when targeted, which led the Penn State Linebackers. He also led the unit with 12 passing game stops. Ep 548Hoops Show: Penn State Basketball Summer Update

Penn State basketball held a media day on July 12 to give a glimpse into the new program’s progress under Mike Rhoades. Rhoades and several of his player met with the assembled media before the team held an open practice later that afternoon. BWI Insider Nate Bauer was there to take it all in and provides his insights on today’s Hoops Show. Check out the full show wherever you get your podcasts, or enjoy listening to it on the embedded player in this article. Bauer discusses what Rhoades had to say about his team-building philosophy, culture, and his early impressions of his team. Bauer also gives his thoughts about what he saw on Tuesday. You’ll also hear from the coach himself as Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr play clips from this week’s press conference. Rhoades shedding folksy narrative Despite leaning heavily on the homecoming aspect of his hiring back in March, Rhoades was decidedly less interested in his roots this week. He made it clear that he has one goal in mind.“I didn’t come back here because it’s my home state. I came back here because I want to win. And I want to win in the Big Ten, I want to win at a cool university like Penn State,” Rhoades said on Tuesday. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the tonal shift from Rhoades and what sort of culture he’s trying to establish at Penn State. Rhoades also gave an initial assessment of his team’s performance this summer. You can hear the full quote in the podcast. “I really like our guard play. It’s probably a little bit better than I thought it would be. I hope we’re a better shooting team than I thought. We have some guys that are really shooting the ball well right now,” he said. “But, the bleachers aren’t pulled out, as I say, and the lights aren’t on, so that’s different. The biggest thing is it’s easy in the summer because there’s no adversity. Now, the next few weeks you’re going to the Bahamas, I’ll create a lot more adversity for guys, so I’ll understand our team a little bit better with that,” Rhoades said. Roster construction was intentional for Penn StateBauer and T-Frank also discuss the team’s roster construction through the transfer portal. The team had to dip heavily into the portal thanks to a mass exodus from the program after Micah Shrewsberry left for Notre Dame. Rhoades explained that the team wanted to build a program for the long term and provide stability and balance to the roster via class eligibility. The team retained three scholarship players this offseason in guards Kanye Clary and Jameel Brown, as well as big-man Demetrius Lilley. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 539BWI Podcast: Brad Maendler discusses Ethan Grunkemeyer and Drew Allar

Penn State fans got a surprise last month when unheralded quarterback from Ohio, Ethan Grunkemeyer, committed to the Nittany Lions a day before he was named the MVP of the Elite 11 regional in State College. The three-star quarterback is a late riser in the Class of 2024. Today, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, talks with Grunkemeyer’s quarterback coach, Brad Maendler. Maendler is the same coach that helped former five-star quarterback and current Penn State player Drew Allar rise from an unknown player into a top prospect in the Class of 2022. Maendler sits down with T-Frank to discuss Grunkemeyer’s skills and to give insight into where Allar is heading into his first presumed year as a starter. Check out the full conversation on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts. Below is a recap of some of the highlights about Grunkemeyer. Maendler noticed something special about Grunkemeyer It’s no surprise that Grunkemeyer’s quarterback coach would believe in him more than others, but Maendler also has social media receipts that back up his confidence that Grunkemeyer would blow up this spring. T-Frank reads those comments back to Maendler on the show about Penn State’s 2024 QB commit. But Maendler says that steam around Grunkemeyer began building before the camp season he predicted would be great for the young QB. “It actually started happening before that, and the galvanizing of his recruiting really kind of dates back to January, late January, when it was to contact period where coaches were actually going out seeing him throw, and it was a chance for coaches to kind of see how the ball comes out of his hand, to confirm height, weight and those kinds of things,” Maendler says on the show. And he was getting tremendous feedback from coaches. In fact, I remember one of the times his mom had mentioned to me that Pat Fitzgerald, head coach at Northwestern, was there, and Pat Fitzgerald was raving about the way he was throwing the football, and I just started, you know, getting like a steady and consistent sort of messages.”Penn State getting a “human Jugs Machine” Maendler’s praise for Grunkemeyer is laced with instructional evidence from a quarterback coach’s perspective. For T-Frank, a film analyst, and Maendler, the consistency of the young quarterback is a standout trait. Maendler explains this as creating “best version throws”.“One of the things that I talked to the kids about is we’ve got to work towards “best version throws.” Ideally a best version throw is when you look your best it’s with spin and velocity and ball placement, appropriate velocity because sometimes we need to change speeds.”The consistency in his mechanics led Grunkemeyer to an Elite 11 finals appearance in Los Angeles later this month. But it’s not just accuracy, Grunkemeyer has a strong arm, according to Maendler. Penn State may have found a steal in this regard. “He’s in the top 1% of his class. You know, I think just I’ve seen a lot of the ’24 guys throw and, you know, I think maybe you’ve got [Dominic] Rayola, and you’ve got Ethan with probably two or three other kids that that’s how much velocity he throws with. And where you really see it is his intermediate velocity, the throws he makes, where he has to drive the ball in between people or, you know, to ball throws where he’s got to get it over the under coverage. But in front of the over coverage and just that ability to have that arc and pace on that football it’s it’s really impressive.”The pair discuss Grunkemeyer further before switching to discuss Allar and the next Maendler quarterback protege, 2025 passer Ryan Montgomery. Penn State is actively recruiting Montgomery, and Maendler discuses what he’s seen of the relationship between those two parties. Learn more about Penn State's unheralded but talented quarterback commit Ethan Grunkemeyer from his QB coach, Brad Maendler. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
