Ep 399BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Maryland Recap
Penn State football defeated Maryland on Saturday for its eighth win of the season in blowout fashion. Today, the BWI Daily Edition will discuss the win and the storylines coming out of the 30-0 shutout of the Terrapins. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKToday, host Thomas Frank Carr is joined by senior editor Nate Bauer to discuss the game. While the quarterbacks dominated the discussion postgame, T-Frank puts his foot down and opens the show with a discussion of the Penn State defense. Manny Diaz's defense put on another show Saturday, blanking Maryland and quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. Bauer describes how they did it by discussing what happened on first and second down during the first half and the majority of the second. Meanwhile, T-Frank comments on how Penn State learned lessons from earlier in the season and applied them to this game. In all, it was a dominating performance at every level of the defense. Next, they flip the script and look at the Maryland offense. T-Frank discusses his continued surprise at the poor play from Tagovailoa and his performance. Despite laying out the issues that Maryland presented, T-Frank expected more from the offense. They also paint a bright future for the Penn State defense with the number of young players that are playing at an exceptionally high level.Next, they shift to the offense and discuss the quarterback situation. They spend a lengthy time discussing when to play and when not to play freshman Drew Allar. While both disagree with his usage on Saturday, they try putting the situation into perspective. T-Frank also gives an evaluation of how Allar played when he did see the field. Meanwhile, Bauer juxtaposes head coach James Franklin's "bold and aggressive" mentality with his decisions surrounding the quarterback. Finally, T-Frank and Bauer discuss running back Nick Singleton and what his performance on Saturday means for his Penn State career. The duo agrees that Singleton's abilities took a leap in this game, describing his journey to get there and how he's progressed. Lastly, they wrap up the show by giving parting thoughts about Allar and how much experience he's gotten this season. Bauer compares that to what starter Sean Clifford received his first season and how much that can help him in the future. T-Frank adds on by saying it's okay if the young player doesn't excel every time he steps on the field. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 398BWI Live Postgame Show: Penn State, Nick Singleton, runs over Maryland
Penn State beat down Maryland on Saturday in another total domination effort by the defense. The Terrapins gained 27 total yards in the first half, while the Nittany Lions methodically worked to a 27-0 halftime lead. Get the breakdown of how it happened on the BWI Live Postgame Show with Thomas Frank Carr and Tom Hannifan. They go live immediately after the game and give you the highs and lows of the contest. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you never miss a show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKHannfian and T-Frank will take your questions live on the show, so tune in right after the game to get your voice heard. Penn State running back Nick Singleton was back in early-season form on Saturday, rushing for 122 yards on only 11 carries before the backups filtered in during the fourth quarter. Singleton scored two explosive runs, both of which came on fourth and short. The freshman ran like a man possessed, with multiple broken tackles and great vision. Not to be outdone, fellow freshman Kaytron Allen chipped in 76 yards on the evening. On the flip side, Maryland kept a lid on Penn State's passing attack. Unfortunately for starter Sean Clifford that meant a slow night with only 139 yards passing on 12 completions. The senior quarterback was frustrated all afternoon and seldom found open receivers. However, the team still moved the ball, collecting three field goals to end the second quarter and then into the third. The Penn State defense smothered Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa who struggled with pressure for the second straight week. Manny Diaz's defense racked up seven sacks and limited Maryland to one yard per-carry before the game was out of reach. The Nittany Lions' march towards ten wins continues next week when they hit the road to face Rutgers at 3:30. Penn State ran over Maryland on the way to it's eighth win of the season. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.

Ep 389BWI Daily: Scouting the Indiana Hoosiers with Zach Osterman of the Indianapolis Star
Penn State must rally after a crushing fourth-quarter loss to Ohio State last weekend when they travel to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers. To understand what type of opponent is awaiting the team on Saturday, host Thomas Frank Carr sits down with Zack Osterman of the Indianapolis star on the BWI Daily Edition. They’ll discuss the season for Indiana, the offensive issues, and the reversal of fortune for the Hoosier’s defense. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKAfter a 3-0 start, Indiana is now 3-5 and took a five-game losing streak into its bye week to end October. Find out how the situation with first-year offensive coordinator Walt Bell and where the trouble spots are for his offense. Osterman thinks that the issue has gotten bad enough that starting quarterback Connor Bazelak’s job may be up for grabs coming into this game against the Nittany Lions. He and T-Frank discuss what a quarterback change could mean for the offense and how it operates. Next, they discuss the situation at receiver, running back, and finally, offensive line. Unfortunately, Osterman doesn’t paint a rosy picture for Penn State’s next opponent. Defensively, T-Frank has always enjoyed watching head coach Tom Allen’s defense. But this season, something seems to be missing. Despite having the majority of players back for 2022, the unit has underperformed. So what’s the issue? Osterman points to the defining concepts of Indiana’s defense as the problem because certain aspects of the game aren’t happening this season. Next, they discuss the impact of Cam Jones and his status for this weekend before expanding that conversation to involve the front seven. T-Frank wraps up the show by asking Osterman what he thinks of Penn State and what he thinks will decide the game’s outcome. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Finally, T-Frank and Fitz will try to tackle the bigger-picture questions coming out of the game. And are they back to a position of growth after two down seasons in 2020 and 2021? Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Buckeyes come into the game undefeated and ranked second in the nation. They’re also one of the country’s most explosive offenses, scoring 40 or more points in every game except week one. To better understand how they’ve done that and what Penn State is facing, Spencer Holbrook joins host Thomas Frank Carr on the BWI Daily Edition. Subscribe to the Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show at 7 pm! T-Frank and Holbrook begin the discussion with the Ohio State offense and quarterback CJ Stroud. Yes, the numbers are impressive, but how has he played if you extract Stroud from the playmakers around him? That’s the first thing that T-Frank asks Holbrook to understand the Buckeyes’ trigger man better. Next, Holbrook gives his thoughts on how the redshirt sophomore quarterback has played this season and how Penn State will test him. Before discussing the rest of the offense, T-Frank and Holbrook examine the Ohio State running game, which has come on strong in 2022. Next, T-Frank wants to know the difference for the Buckeyes this season and what Penn State’s defense is facing on Saturday. Miyan Williams and Tre’Veon Henderson provide a potent combination, but according to both analysts, the offensive line is the difference. Hear how Ohio State has re-tooled the front four to make a more cohesive unit up front. Finally, they discuss what T-Frank thinks makes the Buckeyes click; the receivers. Holbrook details what he knows about the status of Jaxon Smith-Njiba, who is playing through a hamstring injury. They also discuss the play of former Penn State prospect Julian Flemming in his third season with the Buckeyes. The discussion leads T-Frank to ask Holbrook if this group is more talented than the trio last year that featured two top-15 NFL Draft picks. Finally, they transition to the defense to discuss the impact of new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. What effect has he had on the Ohio State defense? Holbrook and T-Frank describe the differences between the Ohio State team that Penn State faced last season and the team they will see on Saturday. They also dip into the significant changes the team has seen over the previous year relating to scheme and freedom of play from the Buckeyes. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. They'll also be taking questions throughout the night. From there, they'll discuss the Penn State offense and its offensive outburst on Saturday. How do the trio feel about the performance on Saturday, and do they think it's indicative of things to come? They'll also discuss the individual players that stood out to them in the win. Sean Clifford earned a Big Ten player of the week award from the same game that the home fans booed him when he was announced as the starting quarterback. What does the panel think about this dichotomy? Finally, the offensive line is banged up, heading into the season's most crucial game. They'll discuss the implications of the team's injury rash on the right side of the offensive line and how things went on Saturday. Ep 380BWI Live Postgame: Penn State finds offensive balance, blows out Minnesota
Penn State football came out after a crushing defeat to Michigan in a big way. They dominated Minnesota in a blowout win during the 2022 White Out Game. Join film analyst Thomas Frank Carr as he discusses what he saw in the game and how the Nittany Lions finally opened up their offense and found a flow. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show!https://youtu.be/RQty6M0xXWoDespite moving the ball in the second quarter, Penn State went into halftime with a 17-10 lead. Minnesota scored a quick touchdown before the half and then got the ball to start the third quarter. Unfortunately for the gophers, that was as close as it would get. Penn State scored 21 points in the third quarter and raced out to a 38-10 lead to start the final frame. The offensive resurgence was led by quarterback Sean Clifford, who played the game of his life in front of 107 thousand fans. The senior quarterback rallied from an ugly interception in the first quarter to throw for 295 yards and four touchdowns, completing 74% of his passes. Offensive coordinator Mike Yurich finally cracked the code for using tight ends. As a result, the offense went to the position early and often. Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren caught 25-plus-yard touchdown passes and were a nightmare all night in the middle of the field. Penn State avenges its first loss of the season in a big way. Ep 379BWI Daily: White Out recruiting and game preview
Penn State will host over 100 college football prospects for the annual White Out game this weekend. It is one of the biggest games of the year on the field and has significant implications for the program's future in recruiting. The BWI Daily Edition will discuss both on today's show. Subscribe to the BWI Daily on YouTube so you don't miss it! https://bit.ly/3mudKogOne of the most important players attending on Saturday is a four-star receiver from Roman Catholic high school, Tyseer Denmark. Denmark is one of the top players in Pennsylvania next cycle and announced that he will end his recruitment soon. His top schools include Penn State, Ohio State and others but Snyder says that the list really ends with those two programs. So, where does Penn State stand in that order? Snyder discusses that to start the show. After he sets that up, T-Frank wants to know how good of an opportunity this is for Penn State to make an impression. With so many players and prospects on the sideline, can Penn State give its best effort this weekend? Snyder weighs the pros and cons of that situation. After discussing Denmark, T-Frank and Snyder run through important names that Snyder has added to the list since the recruiting show on Tuesday. Those players include Ellis Robinson IV, Kaveon Keys, and more. Check out the show to learn about who those players are and why they're important. Finally, they get to Ryan Snyder's best bets of the week. Here's this week's group of games. Ole Miss (+2.5) vs. LSU Purdue (+2.5) at Wisconsin Minnesota (+5) at Penn StateSnyder also sneaks in a bonus play of the week too. Lastly, they spend the show's final section breaking down Penn State's matchup with Minnesota. What matchups can go in Penn State's favor? Which ones will hurt them? T-Frank broke down the Gophers this week and shares his thoughts. He also comments on his concerns with the Penn State offense as it's been presented this season. If you want more of his thoughts on those articles, check them out below. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 378BWI Dailly: Penn State vs Minnesota Preview
Penn State football takes on Minnesota in a must-win game on Saturday. Not only would a win prevent a two-game slide, but it would reverse narratives about Penn State head coach James Franklin's ability to deal with big-game losses. Throw on top of that a showdown with former offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca during the White Out and you have all the makings of a high-pressure game. The BWI Daily Edition will break all of that down on the official game preview show. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKHost Nate Bauer and Blue White Illustrated publisher Sean Fitz start the show by discussing the things they saw at Penn State's open practice on Wednesday. Firstly, they share an update on what they saw from quarterback Sean Clifford. The sixth-year senior exited last week's game with an injury and didn't return to the field. Bauer and Fitz give fans their opinions on what Clifford's actions at practice mean. Bauer also discusses what he thinks Franklin meant earlier in the week by saying that Clifford had "earned the right" to start. From there, they discuss other players with known injuries and how they were at practice, including guard Landon Tengwall. However, one notable absent at practice wasn't injured last week. Next, hear what the duo says about running back Keyvone Lee. They also discuss Penn State's matchup with Minnesota. Do the Nittany Lions stand a better chance of scoring points against the Gophers? More importantly, can they stop Minnesota's heavy-handed rushing attack? They'll examine the critical matchups in the game and finish with a game prediction to close the show. Ep 377BWI Daily: Have teams figured out Penn State's new offensive formula?
Penn State football has only lost one game but is in the middle of an offensive slump. So what is causing that issue? That's what Thomas Frank Carr, host of the BWI Daily Edition, digs into on Wednesday's show. Subscribe to the BWI Daily, so you don't T-Frank's breakdowns! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKT-Frank begins the show discussing something that James Franklin said earlier this season. The show host asked Franklin if he can tell when teams get a read on his offense by a certain week in the season. To hear Franklin's answer check out the show. From there, T-Frank uses that answer to break the season into two sections and see if he can find a correlation between opponents understanding Penn State's new identity and how they adjust to it. The numbers he found are illuminating. He looks at the team's top three back to see how their yards-per-carry figures have changed over the season and how the quarterback is affected by that. So from there, he looks at Sean Clifford's play-action numbers to reveal how things have changed as the season has worn on and teams get more information about Penn State. Part of play-action passing is getting athletes in space to break tackles and make plays. So, T-Frank dissects the number of broken tackles by Penn State athletes from the first and second parts of the season. Again, the numbers tell a very illuminating story. Finally, he talks about the reasons behind these figures. Why is Penn State's output waning over time? He discusses offensive space, threats on the field, and the ever-elusive 'balance.' Ep 376Recruiting Show: Penn State White Out list and who's potentially on commitment watch?
It’s White Out week for the Penn State football team, who is coming off a crushing loss to Michigan in a big game last Saturday. How does that affect recruiting? The BWI Daily Recruiting Show discusses the new On300 for the Class of 2024 and the White Out list on today’s show. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don’t miss the show! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKEverything affects recruiting, but no single thing will win you or lose a group of players. So how do you measure the impact of the loss to Michigan? Host Ryan Snyder and Blue White Illustrated publisher Sean Fitz discuss that idea to start the show. For Fitz, the discussion isn’t about losing to Michigan; it’s about a larger narrative around the program he examines. However, individual cases can change the balance of one situation or another. For Snyder, he finds Anthony Speca’s recruitment fascinating now that the four-star linebacker will visit Michigan and Penn State in back-to-back weeks. He even discusses who he thinks the leader for Speca’s services is at this point. The White Out isn’t the only list this week. The On300 for the Class of 2024 got an update this week, and the next crop of talent heading into college football is crystallizing. Some interesting players that intrigued Fitz and Snyder include interior lineman Liam Andrews and tackle Kevin Haywood, among others. It wasn’t all good news for Penn State prospects, though. Players like Quinton Martin and Dominic Nichols dropped in the rankings, which should surprise most recruiting fans. However, Snyder spoke to Charles Power, the recruiting director for On3, about most of Penn State’s prospects and gave the reasons behind the drop for critical prospects. Finally, the duo discusses the White Out list. While they don’t dive into each name, they do examine five names each that they think are exciting players to watch this weekend. Some players include Quince Orchard pass rusher Jaylen Harvey and defensive end Brian Robinson out of Ohio. Fitz also highlights a contingent of offensive linemen from the Buckeye state coming to the game. Throughout the show, they also highlight players that should be on commitment watch before, after, or during the big recruiting weekend. Ep 374Penn State steamrolled by Michigan: BWI Live Postgame
Penn State football suffered its first loss of the season, losing 41 to 17, falling with a thud. Penn State gave up over 350 yards rushing in the game. Penn State is now 5-1. Join the BWI Live postgame show on YouTube to discuss what happened in the game. Host Tom Hannifan and film analyst Thomas Frank Carr take your questions and break down the game. Penn State managed only 14 plays in the first half, compared to Michigan's 50, yet was only down by two scores at halftime. However, two big runs by Michigan blew the game open in the third quarter, where Manny Diaz's defense gave up 168 yards on the ground. Penn State's offense was overmatched, gaining only 22 yards rushing from its trio of runners before the game script was out of hand. However, quarterback Sean Clifford was good on the day, hitting several passes on third down to Mitchell Tinsley and a 48-yard pass to Harrison Wallace. But the team had very little consistency on offense and couldn't keep up with the Wolverines' onslaught. The fourth quarter didn't yield better results, with Clifford going down and backup Drew Allar finishing the game. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Both players sat out the first month of the season, and Franklin announced yesterday that Vilbert would not play this season. What impact does that have on the Penn State defensive line? Pickel and T-Frank discuss that topic before discussing what Izzard brings to the table at defensive tackle now that he's returned. Next, they discuss their general impressions of the team over five weeks. Ep 363BWI Live: Penn State and the conditions sloppy in a 17-7 win over Northwestern - Postgame Show
It was a wet, sloppy game for Penn State football, who defeated the Northwestern Wildcats 17-7 despite turning the ball over five times. Join film analyst Thomas Frank Carr as he discusses what happened during Penn State's rain-soaked matchup and discuss the major storylines coming out of the game. T-Frank will also take questions from fans who join him live on YouTube. Subscribe to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube, so you don't miss the postgame show. https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKThe Penn State defense came to play, limiting the Wildcats to less than 300 yards of offense while forcing three turnovers of its own. At times, the Nittany Lion's defense struggled with two penalties by freshman defenders Dani Dennis-Sutton and Abdul Carter that extended a drive for the Wildcats that nearly ended in a touchdown. Despite that, the Lions held firm on a fourth-down quarterback sneak from the one-yard line. Once again, the star of the game for the Penn State offense was freshman running back Kaytron Allen. Despite not playing in the first half, Allen nearly ended the game as the team's leading rusher. The reason was that fellow freshman Nick Singleton lost two fumbles and a third that was called off for a stop in forward momentum. However, Allen fumbled late in the fourth quarter that gave Northwestern life again. Penn State heads into the bye week 5-0. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 361BWI Daily: Penn State vs. Northwestern Preview
Penn State faces Northwestern on Saturday to start the remainder of the 2022 Big Ten schedule. To get fans ready for the game, senior editor Nate Bauer hosts the BWI Daily Edition with publisher Sean Fitz to preview the upcoming contest. Part of that preview is a look back at the week in Penn State football to review where the Nittany Lions stand heading into the game. This week the news, while subtle, was significant. There have been rumors that starting quarterback Sean Clifford would not play this weekend, and backup Drew Allar would get the start. While Fitz and Bauer don't have anything concrete to report, they have noticed odd things happening around that story. So they discuss the situation before moving on to practice observations. Bauer starts open practice observations with what he and Fitz saw of Clifford during the 20 minutes of open availability. Next, they discuss the players with known injuries this week, including tight end Tyler Warren and interior lineman Hunter Nourzad. That conversation gets context from James Franklin's comments after practice, as does the situation with defensive tackle Coziah Izzard. They discuss how the tone has changed around Izzard and defensive end Smith Vilbert, both of which haven't been available to start the season. Next, they review where the team stands coming out of non-conference play and reflect on the lessons they learned playing Central Michigan last weekend. Naturally, that leads into the preview of Northwestern. It's been a tough start to the season for the 1-3 Wildcats, with three straight home losses. Bauer and Fitz discuss the team's shortcomings and how they have an unusual identity this season compared to the traditional Northwestern plan of attack. Finally, they put all of this in context with Penn State's upcoming bye week and then give their score predictions for the game. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 360BWI Daily: Stock up/Stock Down for Penn State players through first month of the season
The first month of the Penn State football season is in the books, and its time to take stock of where the team stands heading into conference play on Saturday against Northwestern. So, host Thomas Frank Carr does that. He gives you five offensive and defensive players whose stock has gone up and the handful of players whose stock has gone down. Subscribe to the BWI Daily Edition, so you don't miss an episode! https://bit.ly/3KzEcqKPenn State's offense hasn't been lights-out but several players have taken a significant step forward during the first month of the 2022 season. T-Frank starts his list with an unlikely pair of players that many fans might think should be higher. See why he has Nick Singleton, and Kaytron Allen listed fifth. Next, he heads to the offensive line for a player that has changed the way that Penn State runs the football, thanks to his effectiveness in specific situations. While this player isn't playing the best football among the starting offensive linemen, his presence is essential for the success of the running game's health. While T-Frank focused on the running game to start, the rest of the offensive players will be passing game contributors, starting with number three. Check out the show to see which player has exceeded the high expectations from the offseason to land on the list. The second player on the list shouldn't surprise fans who have been hoping to see him play for over a year. Finally, T-Frank highlights the breakout player of the Penn State offense through the first month of the season, the freshmen excluded. This player has finally realized his abilities on offense and has played a pivotal role in several wins this year. After discussing the players whose stock has gone down, T-Frank switches to the defense. He starts with another freshman who is making an impact for the Nittany Lions now that his exceptional talents are beginning to shine through. From there, he highlights Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter. The freshman didn't have the same expectations in the preseason as his classmates at running back, but T-Frank has a different reason for keeping him lower on the list. Next, T-Frank transitions to the secondary to highlight one player who has been making splash plays for the Nittany Lions routinely this year. From there, he targets an entire position. Lastly, T-Frank highlights the breakout player of the defense and the entire team. Check out the show to find out which player that is. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 354BWI Daily: Penn State is back
Penn State's sound defeat of Auburn last Saturday sent a shockwave of activity through the college football ecosystem. Plenty of analysts picked Penn State to win, but no one expected them to dominate the Tigers the way they did. After studying the team through three weeks of the season and listening to the chatter this week, the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, has a definitive answer as to what that game meant for the Nittany Lions.Penn State is backBut what does that mean? Is Penn State a national contender now that just put the Big Ten and the rest of the world on notice? Not so fast, T-Frank says. He has a different meaning for how and why the Nittany Lions are "back."Next, he explains why the freshman class of 2022 is pivotal to keeping Penn State back. First, he describes the two distinct waves of the class and how the first wave of first-year Nittany Lions have already made their presence felt in the first three games. While all eyes are on Nick Singleton, he highlights the future of linebacker Abdul Carter and the path to the highest level of success for Carter in the next month. The second wave of freshmen, which is larger than the first, will help define Penn State's ceiling as a team. While Dani Denni-Sutton and Zane Durant are the high-profile names of the group, T-Frank focuses first on Omari Evans. The speedy wide receiver nearly made the first wave of players but has been an inconsistent contributor on offense. So the fact that he's on the list surprises T-Frank, and he thinks it says something about the precarious nature of the receiver room this fall.Lastly, he discusses Allar and his development since arriving in Happy Valley in January. How good has he been, and how far ahead of schedule is the 6-5 freshman? T-Frank gives his thoughts.JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annualSUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmationBookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: https://bluewhiteonline.comDownload our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.comPenn State is back | The freshmen that can keep them there | #WeAre Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
