Ep 279The Power Of Women
To mark International Women's Day 2023, Jeannette is here with a vital reminder to remember that, no matter what field we work in, we should always strive towards building diverse teams, and why doing so is so critical to success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being more diverse is not about being better or worse. It's about recognising differences, celebrating differences, and noting the wonderful similarities we all share. Research has proven that diverse teams and boards perform better than non-diverse. The more you diversify, the more you represent your multi-varied customer base. Once you identify where your organisation is, you can better recognise where you wish to be in the future. In order to make significant progress, diversity should always be at the top of the business agenda. If you don't have this buy-in from the top, it's very difficult to drive change. BEST MOMENTS 'It's about diversity in all its wonderful shapes and forms' 'What can we do to make sure we have a far more inclusive and diverse leadership?' 'Diverse teams in general achieve better results' 'Tap into the pool of talent from all diverse backgrounds' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. It’s never too late to be BRAVE and BOLD and unlock your inner BRILLIANCE. Nick joins Jeannette to talk about his inspiring business journey, the most insightful lessons he's learned during his swift ascent to success, the best ways to embrace the varied cultures and wonders of the world around you, and why you should always listen to your heart when it comes to chasing your dreams. KEY TAKEAWAYS We have to push ourselves to leave our comfort zones if we want to find true growth. Sometimes that means leaving the places we know and feel comfortable in, but the growth you experience by being more adventurous is invaluable. Ep 277Building Brilliant Teams
Jeannette tells you everything you need to know about how to build brilliant teams, from attracting the right talent in the first place, to crafting the right environment to ensure that the teams you build perform at their very best. KEY TAKEAWAYS Business is all about people. You are only one person. Create the right team, then work to your best strengths while your team works to theirs. This is the key to success. Having a high-performing team environment is critical, particularly if your team is working remotely. Make sure you all share a common purpose, and that your goals are in the same direction. Make sure everyone knows what the mission is for the organisation. Every single person needs to have a clear set of roles and responsibilities. Everyone needs to know what they are doing and how they are doing it. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s always about the quality of the team’ ‘You’ve got to get the right people on the bus in the first place, then make sure they’re sitting in the right seats and facing in the right direction’ ‘Think about where you are on that pyramid’ ‘The easiest person to lie to is yourself’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In this episode, Emmie talks to Jeannette about her incredible story in business, how to make the most out of a business partnership, and how embracing and igniting the spirit of entrepreneurship in her own life has led her to the pinnacle of success. KEY TAKEAWAYS Business partnerships work best wen your skill sets compliment each other. Your strengths can make up for weaknesses in another and vice versa. If you want to get going in business then don’t overthink things. Just get going! Stop putting off what you do straight away. Have a plan in place, but don’t hesitate when you’re ready to start. Confidence is one of the most useful tools for an entrepreneur. It allows a sense of visualisation and resilience that can help you to overcome challenges that would defeat others. BEST MOMENTS ‘I always had an eye on the money and what was going on there’ ‘Be clear about what each of you brings to the party’ ‘Why don’t you tell everyone about all the amazing things that you’ve done?’ ‘I now know that I’m amazing at what I do’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 275Exercising Your Strategic Muscle
Following on from how to build, Jeannette talks about exercising your strategic muscle - how to put your strategies into place, why we need a broad perspective, and how to deliver on the strategies that will lead to your mission's end. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we are busy and occupied, we focus upon the short term thinking, and fail to think longer term. But it's worth taking time to reflect on the future while also making the most of the present. Consider your "what". This is your mission. Your vision is the roadmap that will take you to that mission's end. A strategy is your "how" - how you get from your starting point to the mission's conclusion. Look at the bird's eye view and break it down into smaller, more actionable elements. BEST MOMENTS 'You do need to have that longer-term view - where you're heading' 'Think of your "what" and your "why". These are the starting points for any good strategy' 'Within that overall strategic plan there are subsections' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 274Clair Preston-Beer, MD Greene King Pubs - Disruptor & Change Maker
Clair Preston- Beer who is a managing director at Greene King pubs sits down with Jeannette to talk about all things career, business, mindset, and navigating demerging and restructuring. They cover how Claire got to be a Greene King MD and how the pub industry is responding to the trials, tribulations, challenges, and opportunities that the current economic and social climate is creating. As well as discussing the importance of diversity in the sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS Be the best version of yourself and be confident about who you are. Everyone has something special to offer. During any restructuring, good communication while restructuring is even more important. You need to be clear about the reasons for changing things and create space in the business to implement the change. You need to be present for whatever you are doing. Including for your family. Children, in particular, need you to be there for them and fully focused on them, during family time. In today's digital world, pubs are one of the last places people come together and connect. Many communities still value them and have a sense of ownership, which is a good thing, but it can also make it hard to change things. Keeping in touch and understanding your grassroots customers is essential. Analysing your data is important, but talking directly to your teams and customers is also vital. BEST MOMENTS 'I wanted to go and find a business where people were at the heart of the customer experience.' 'When you are quite disciplined and organised, it can mean you actually get better about balance.' 'I’m also very passionate about making the hospitality spaces really accessible places.' 'Make sure the change is worthwhile' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 273Building Your Strategic Muscle
Jeannette explains why building your strategic muscle is vital, why looking forward is as important as the day-to-day running of a business, and the things you must do early on in order to get those plans up and running at the right time. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you are a leader, it's important to be able to think strategically as well as operationally. Delivering day-to-day is crucial, but we must also look forward. We should remember that our businesses do not operate in a bubble. They are connected to an external world of business and influence, which affect the initiatives we want to achieve. Take a look at your macroeconomic environment. Look at what is going on in the external world - interest rates, inflation, unemployment, customer bases and market trends. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. It's great to be able to brainstorm each of these factors as they play a part in your strategy going forward. BEST MOMENTS 'In order to be able to grow and scale up, it's really important to think strategically' 'Thinking strategically is really around the big picture' 'We have to set the context for our strategic planning' 'Before you get into the detail, let's talk about what the context is that you need to pay attention to' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 272Sasha Covington COO Jones Lang LaSalle - Leading the way on Diversity & Inclusion
Sasha Covington is the COO for the valuation advisory team and Head of Diversity & Inclusion for JLL’s UK Valuation Advisory team, a position she's achieved after over three decades in the property industry. Sasha is a real example of how hard work and dedication can result in life-changing career paths, and in this episode Sasha talks about her upbringing and what drove her all the way to the heights of success. KEY TAKEAWAYS The formal education system is something we all have to go through, but the more entrepreneurial minded are not ever put off by grades or assessments. You don't have to have straight As to make it in life. The power of association is far more effective than we may realise. By associating with those we aspire to, it helps us to solidify ambition. The gender roles in the workplace are improving, but there is still an inherent bias against the skills and talents of women. When it comes to diversity, the question should always be who is the best person who can carry out the task required. We should look past cultural heritage and recognise those who can make our businesses better. BEST MOMENTS 'There was a real lack of diversity in terms of gender' 'I've always stayed authentic to me' 'I did fit in, it's just that I was in a really weird environment' 'I make sure the right people are in the right seat with the right tools' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 271Are You A Chameleon? Bridging The Gap From Old To New
In this episode, Jeannette talks about the concept of the business chameleon - someone who moves from one situation to another, and how to effectively recognise the similarities between where we are now and where we want to be. KEY TAKEAWAYS When we're currently in a position that we don't favour, it's important to think about where we want to be next. But often, we focus on new scenarios and see them as something separate. You can't navigate the future by looking at the past. However, we can take the lessons from before and use them to guide our way. Identify all the transferrable skills, contacts, lessons that you can take from one world to another. There will be far more than you may initially think. BEST MOMENTS 'Where you are isn't really where you want to be, going forward' 'You can't drive a car by looking through the rear view mirror' 'We're being a chameleon. We're changing, but we're also protecting and retaining all the great stuff' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 270Evan Price Founder Artist Collective - Transforming Artists into ‘Artistpreneurs’
Jeannette meets Founder and CEO of Artist Collective, Evan Price, who has been working in and around the music industry since the age of fourteen, in artist management, digital marketing and coaching. Evan talks about the ways in which he helps and nurtures artists and musicians, and how to bridge the gap between creativity and business. KEY TAKEAWAYS The best thing about any sector, creative or not, is that there is always an opportunity to add the business element to the creative element. With the rise of technology and innovation, there is always the opportunity for growth and development. It takes a entrepreneurial perspective and a little bravery. At the age of fourteen, he started a booking agency that promoted more than +100 shows, igniting his passion for the business. He then became involved in artist management with several Chicago acts, licensing, booking, digital marketing, and coaching. As a graduate of Columbia College, he used his Bachelor’s Degree in Arts & Entertainment Media Management in Music Business to build his own vision. His mission is to transform artists into what he calls “artistpreneurs” and finally get them out of the 9-5s they hate and back to the music. By using the “M.C.S. Method” or ‘monetizable creative skillset’ Evan and his team can help creatives build a profitable business around the one thing they are the most passionate about. Who says your hobby can’t be your business? Drawing inspiration from the likes of Steve Jobs, Gary Vaynerchuck, and Donald Miller, he discovered the key to a successful brand: an outrageously compelling story. This drove Evan to teach musicians the art of clever storytelling to unlock their success through authentic vulnerability. He has built a very engaged social media following reminding creatives to be self aware, empathetic to their audience, and unwavering in their pursuit of building their music business. His company Artist Collective was given the nod by Billboard magazine as one of the best resources for musicians during the COVID-19 Pandemic and he’s been featured on such programs as The Jam Tv show, Chance the Rapper’s SocialWorks, KissFM, Medium, and more. Musicians and creatives interested in services can apply for the Artistpreneur Accelerator - a program designed to build, launch, and scale your creative business in 90 days! Working int he corporate sector can be rewarding, but it can also take its toll on mental health. Always make sure you put yourself and your wellbeing first. The business recently expanded into south London, with the launch of a delivery service based inBermondsey.A couple for eleven years, neither Resh nor Heena had experience of running a restaurant when they took the lease on the site at 117 The Vale, in Acton, London W3. Resh had been working in the banking sector for seven years, which she found unfulfilling, while Heena was enjoying a successful career as an experience designer. Planning to start a family, they also wanted to bring more balance to their working lives. Both women shared a lifelong passion for food, instilled in them from childhood by their large families, and having grown up in nearby Hounslow, Heena was a fan of the diverse, creative Acton area. The embryonic idea of opening a “non-traditional” restaurant serving “the food we grew up on” quickly became a reality when an ideal site became available; they put an offer in, which was accepted, and opened chapati club on 7th April 2017.For the menu, Resh and Heena looked to favourite recipes from their shared Indian-Kenyan heritage, including many handed down by their families. ‘Chicken G Dad’s Way’, for example, is Heena’s dad’s recipe, a dish so popular within her family that any time it’s made it leads to a large impromptu gathering. The ‘61’ in ‘Chicken 61’ meanwhile refers to Resh’s aunt’s house number, where she would go if she wanted to eat chicken, which her vegetarian mother wouldn’t cook.Heena created chapati club’s modern, pared-back branding and visual identity, and oversees the creative side of the business, while Resh is responsible for the day-to-day running of the restaurant and is a familiar presence at almost every service. Both of their personalities are present in the music, another shared passion, putting together their own playlists which contribute to the restaurant’s lively, celebratory atmosphere. As gay women of colour, Resh and Heena were initially wary of being an ‘out and proud’ LGBTQ+ business, but quickly found that this was a strength, with peers, suppliers and most importantly, customers, all embracing them. In its four years in business, chapati club has attracted a loyal, diverse clientele of regular ‘clubbers’ who value the inclusivity of the restaurant, whether they are dining with family, friends or indeed alone.Resh and Heena strive to repay their community’s support by giving back to it where they can. Throughout lockdown, chapati club provided free meals for NHS frontline staff, and they have hosted fundraising and community events, including music and comedy nights, at the restaurant. They champion other local businesses, serving wines chosen for the restaurant by Vindinista, Acton’s boutique wine shop, and gelato from Duci in Chiswick. While the business has grown with the expansion into south London, chapati club remains a very personal project for Resh and Heena. They are committed to offering

Ep 267Networking, Networking, Networking
In this episode, Jeannette talks about why networking is so crucial to success in your career, work, and personal life. She shares details of how you can make sure that you become an effective networker. Including how to get the most out of conferences and other events. All of the 10 tips she shares are easy to implement, yet extremely effective. KEY TAKEAWAYS Whether you realise it or not, you are already networking all the time. Business cards are still handy, but you should also have a QR code people can use to pick up your contact details using their phone. If you say you are going to do something for someone or follow up with them, make sure you do so, BEST MOMENTS ‘We are all networking all of the time, whether you realise it or not. ´ ‘Be very intentional, what is it you're trying to get out of the conference? Ep 261What Have We Learned From 2022
The new year is the perfect time of year to reflect upon what has gone before. In this episode, Jeannette talks about the lessons she has learned from the year gone by, the goals we should try to focus on in 2023, and how we can use the events of 2022 in order to ensure our success in the year ahead. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sometimes we can be so busy chasing the next thing and moving forward, that we miss the chance to reflect upon what we've gained and lost, and take the teachings from both. We could never have anticipated that the economy would be as unstable and damaged as it was. There was initial growth, but some decisions have left us even worse off. If you're relying on a single source of income, then it might be time to think about diversifying now in order to fortify your financial prospects in 2023. It doesn't matter how tough things get, there will always be the chance to find opportunities. Even when markets are bad, it means good things for someone. BEST MOMENTS 'This is the perfect time to reflect' 'Risk can leave you in a vulnerable position' 'My aim is to help as many people as possible to be the best versions of themselves' 'Opportunities are everywhere' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In this episode, Mark talks about the mission behind his incredible business ventures, the value of practice when it comes to being the best, and his fascinating vision for the ultimate environment - one that will bring out the best in people worldwide. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you practice at something, and devote yourself to being better at it, you gain a sense of autonomy that gives you muscle memory for that task. Practice makes perfect, but it also makes permanent. Background is never a limiting factor when it comes to success. If you have the right mindset and are willing to work hard, you can take your self to any point in business and life, no matter where you come from. When we are allowed to relax sufficiently, we enable ourselves to work far more efficiently. Creating an environment where we can rest, work and play, is the best way to get the most from people. The value of knowledge is exponentially increased when it is shared. Those who have knowledge empower others by sharing and encouraging others to do the same. BEST MOMENTS 'Practice makes permanent' 'If you push yourself out of your comfort zone, you really can achieve anything' 'I want every being on the planet to be free - financially, physically, and emotionally' 'Selling is serving!' Ep 259Where Focus Goes, Energy Flows & Results Show
Jeannette talks about focus, and how by nurturing and developing this crucial business sense, we can achieve so much more than we believed possible. KEY TAKEAWAYS Take concentrated action and develop clarity of thinking in order to maximise the things you're capable of. A good acronym for FOCUS is Follow One Course Until Success. We need to focus more, but it's easier said than done, but if achieved, we will reach success. Get clear on what it is that you want. Without working out this fundamental aim, you can't hope to set your focus correctly. When you're in the moment and things are moving around you, the best way to set focus is to remove all unnecessary distractions. BEST MOMENTS 'It's about focussing in order to get results' 'If you don't know what you want, how will you be able to focus on it?' '70-20-10 allows you to focus proportionally, and explore other opportunities' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. In this episode, Jeannette takes you through some tips, tricks and things to bear in mind, so that you can make the most from your merger, acquisition or sale. KEY TAKEAWAYS We all need to step outside of our comfort zones and enter uncertainty in order to push ourselves to see what's possible. You can't embrace opportunity if you wait for it to come to you. It's useful to adopt the mindset of a child from time to time, in that we need to embrace the power of exploration, and say yes to things that might lead us in new directions. Be curious! Failure is never the end of any endeavour. It merely teaches us about the right way to succeed at something. Reframe failure as a lesson, and your success rate with increase exponentially. Everything in life can be seen either as a hindrance or an ignition. The key to framing them in a positive way is you. BEST MOMENTS 'You need to receive and give. I'm all curiosity' 'Don't be afraid to try, because it's okay to fail' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 254Neil Fillbrook CEO BankBrokers - Getting Creative with Finance
Jeannette is joined by Neil Fillbrook, one of the most experienced and renowned international bankers in the sector, and a man with over two decades of experience, having worked with such respected names as Royal Sun Alliance and HSBC, and now acts as President and CEO of Bankbrokers Consultancy Group. Neil joins Jeannette to talk about his fascinating career, and what has changed and evolved in the banking industry across the span of his journey, the best advice for companies looking to survive and thrive through tough times, and why we should always look at opportunities with a sense of bravery. KEY TAKEAWAYS When opportunity arises, it's only natural to feel cautious, but we shouldn't let this caution override the positives. All in the incredible paths that open up to us begin with a brave, bold step. Even if you fall flat on your face, you'll still have learned something from the experience. There are no such things as failures - only lessons. A client values trust and support more than anything else. If you can make a client feel as though you are there for them when times get tough, then loyalty will follow. In order to ensure your survival during tougher times, it's necessary to hunker down and cut costs where possible. But we must never over indulge in this practice, and make sure we keep a "helicopter view" of areas in which we should grow or acquire. BEST MOMENTS 'I'll say yes to anything' 'Just think about what if?' 'It's a simple proposition. We're on your side, helping you, and I think clients really like that' 'Don't hunker down too much. Look for the opportunities' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 253John Lewis Diversifies £500m To Build 1,000 Homes, What Does This Mean For Your Business
John Lewis have recently announced their intention to diversify their business model, and start investing in property. They plan to spend £500m on building over a thousand rental homes over the forthcoming year. But what will this mean for your own property investing portfolio? In this episode, Jeanette unpacks the story and talks about the impact of such a fascinating new foray for one of the country's most respected business names. KEY TAKEAWAYS The sites at which John Leis are building the rentals are mainly in London - Bromley and West Ealing - but Reading's vacant warehousing may also be part of the plan. Sustainability is a big part of John Lewis's ethos, and they have committed to a net zero pledge by 2035. It will be interesting to see how this stretches into their property plans. John Lewis will now have a retail arm, but also an asset branch that appreciates over time, and brings in cash each month. This demonstrates the value of having a diversified portfolio of investments, as it proves to de-risk other arms of income, and relieves pressure all round. BEST MOMENTS 'There's a commitment to affordable housing, which is very much aligned with John Lewis's values' 'You've got to remember that there's a shortage of 75,000 properties just in London alone' 'It helps you think about your own income stream in context to what's going on in the market' 'They are de-risking their core retail business' This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 252Steven Daines Chief Talent & Culture Officer, Accor Hotels - Being a True Heartist
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Steven Daines who is the Chief Talent & Culture Officer and a member of Accor’s Executive Committee. He trained as a banker but decided to take a different direction and joined Carnival Cruise Lines which gave him the travel and hospitality bug. They discuss diversity in-depth. How it benefits companies and the challenges that need to be overcome to achieve true diversity. As well as talking about managing a range of hotels that cover the entire spectrum from budget to luxury and the future of the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS From the start, Accor decentralised, recruited locally, and empowered those people. Because of recruiting locally, the Accor group has always had good diversity. But has had to work harder on gender diversity. Decision-making is of a higher quality if you represent the diversity of your customers. Cultural differences still present challenges, but it is a learning curve. Social mobility is a big part of true diversity. Achieving true diversity means different things in different places. Companies need to learn to provide services that work for a far more diverse demographic. Any industry that needs people to work unsociable hours is struggling to attract staff. You learn fastest when you are challenged. If you are given an opportunity, take it. Accor values experience and passion combined with empathy with guests. BEST MOMENTS ‘It is still ridiculous that there should be less than half of the leaders of any company anywhere who are ladies. ´ ‘What I would like, really, is for Accor to be known within the next five years as the most culturally diverse company on Earth.’ ‘I think all of us want to experience professional service, but we don't want it to be stiff. We don't want it to be passively formal, it suddenly feels very 19th-century.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. For 10 years, Steven worked in Accor’s subsidiary for Train services, Compagnie des Wagons-Lits, in France, the UK, Spain and eventually in Italy where he was Country Manager for 5 years. Steven then switched to the Hotel Business and held several positions in regional hotel operations, in France and South America. In 2012, he was appointed General Manager for Formule 1 and ibis Budget for France. He was appointed at the Executive Committee in 2014, as Regional CEO in charge of Northern Europe and Russia. He was afterwards in charge of Middle East and Africa and of the New Businesses division until end of 2017, joining then Affidea, the European leader in the operation of Diagnostic Centers, in the healthcare business. In November 2019, he was appointed Chief Talent & Culture Officer and member of Accor’s Executive Committee. Ep 251Burberry Achieves £263 Million in Profit- Is Your Business Recession Proof?
In this episode, Jeannette talks about creating a recession-proof business using Burberry as an example of how to do it. In terms of year-end results, Burberry generated revenues of £1.35 billion despite trading in today´s difficult economic climate. So, what does that mean for your business or the department you run for someone else? What can you learn from Burberry? Jeannette has done the analysis and shares what she has learned from her review of Burberry´s success. Including explaining how anyone can apply those lessons to their own business. KEY TAKEAWAYS Despite the poor economic climate, Burberry´s revenues and profits are still up by 11% year on year. With an amazing year-end profit of £1.35 billion. The luxury market is resilient compared to other markets. Having a strong brand helps. Is your business product desirable and/or unique enough? Being able to diversify where you sell and what you sell is especially important in tough economic times. BEST MOMENTS ‘Having a strong, powerful brand can really make a difference in terms of customers staying with you and being loyal to your product or service. ´ ‘They (Burberry) were also able to diversify their earnings within their sector.’ ‘How are you treating your customers? BEST MOMENTS ‘Work hard, play hard!’ ‘What do you really want that’s true to you? If you can get that out of your head and down on paper. Ep 249How to Turn Your Accent Into Your Superpower
In this episode, Jeannette talks about turning your accent into your superpower. She explains how, at one stage, she felt self-conscious about her own accent and how she came to understand that having a distinctive accent was in fact an advantage. Something she could leverage and benefit from, which is exactly what you can do with your own accent using the tips Jeannette shares. KEY TAKEAWAYS Regardless of what you do people are going to judge you because of your accent. You can´t stop people from judging you. However, you can decide whether you are going to let what they may be thinking hold you back. An accent is one way to stand out from the crowd. Never be afraid to be yourself. Be proud of where you are from, and your background. It is part of what makes you unique and therefore valuable. BEST MOMENTS ‘You are going to be judged anyway regardless, so when it comes to accent, it's time to embrace it. ´ ‘If you change your approach and say, no, actually, I'm proud of where I'm from, I'm proud of my background, I am who I am, then straight away, you are immediately on a winning track.’ EPISODE RESOURCES Speaking Up survey that looks at the impact your accent has in the workplace - https://www.suttontrust.com/our-research/speaking-up-accents-social-mobility/ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Lord Sugar initially invested £250k before becoming a 50% shareholder as well as Mark´s business partner and mentor. KEY TAKEAWAYS It does not matter where you start - you can achieve considerable success. Mark arrived in the UK as a backpacker with only £172 in his pocket. When things are not going well, remember that nothing lasts forever, you always come out the other side and enjoy better times. Travel pushes you to try new things, learn from others and become more adaptable. It is a fantastic way to transform yourself. CoVid has pushed businesses to go online. Helping Climb Online to make a profit in the first year and become self-funded in under 6 years. When it comes to funding, be incredibly careful about whom you partner with and how much equity/control you give away. Don’t make the mistake of pushing your body too far. You need to look after yourself physically to stay productive. Consistency is the key to success. The key to high performance is self-esteem. When you believe in yourself you can achieve anything. You need to have a thick skin to be in business. To go all the way, you have got to be tough and not afraid to tell it like it is. BEST MOMENTS‘Lord Sugar is scary on TV, and he is 10 times scarier in real life... he is a tough, tough guy.’‘Make sure you take on the right levels of money and the right levels of people and advice into your business because if you let too many cooks in the kitchen, you'll end up breaking the business’‘I don't think there's ever been a better time to be an entrepreneur and start a business This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 247Quit Your Job Become Your Own Boss
In this episode, Jeannette talks about quitting your job and becoming your own boss. Whether this is something you've been thinking about for a while, or you've just started on that journey yourself, this episode is for you. In it, Jeannette shares an 8-step process you can use to determine if working for yourself is likely to be the right choice, then if you decide it is, put together a plan to get you there. The advice she shares is current and highly effective because becoming her own boss is something that Jeannette has recently done herself. KEY TAKEAWAYS Becoming and being your own boss is not easy and is not for everyone. If you are stuck in a day job you don’t like or feel is not helping you to progress, becoming your own boss is worth investigating. Before you do anything, decide what you want to get out of being your own boss. Do your research – is it financially viable? What have you got to offer that is different from your competitors? Understand how much money you will need to get started and work out where to get it and how much it will cost. Make sure you have some cash reserves to live on that will take you through the initial start-up phase. Consider testing out your business idea as a side hustle. If you don't particularly enjoy your job, but it's a means to an end, as long as you're enjoying what that allows you to do that is OK too. BEST MOMENTS‘If this is something that you've been thinking about and you want to do, then, you know, do it, give it a go. ´‘Ask yourself what type of business you want to start. Is it a lifestyle business? maybe it's actually as simple as being a consultant, or a solopreneur.’‘Everyone's situation is different but think about your risk appetite.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 246Ian Price CBI Director Wales - The Bridge Between Business & Government
For this episode, Jeannette is joined by Ian Price, who is the director of the Confederation of British Industry here in Wales. They talk about all things business. Including starting companies, scaling them and how the CBI can help. As well as discussing some of the trends and pressures that many people are feeling at the moment. Ian also talks about his career journey. He also explains what the CBI does, in particular, how they lobby on behalf of businesses. As well as discussing diversity, levelling up, hybrid working, mental health and more subjects that impact business owners, with Jeannette. KEY TAKEAWAYS Honesty is important in business. If you are not honest about things, you never uncover problems and deal with them effectively. The CBI lobbies parliament and helps them to understand the impact their regulatory changes are likely to have. They act as a bridge between the two groups. Most people unconsciously recruit people who look and sound like them. It is something every business needs to be aware of and actively combat. In some areas, recruiting a diverse workforce is difficult because certain kinds of people are still not applying for certain jobs because they wrongly assume that they can’t do the work. Changing attitudes at the primary school level is key to ensuring you get a diverse pool of candidates. Having one mobile for work and one for your personal life helps you to switch off properly. Take advantage of any grants, courses, workshops, and organisations that are there to help your business. If you are honest, present your real self and treat people as you would like to be treated yourself others warm to you, and buy. BEST MOMENTS ‘I actually say, from all of my years in business, that the CBI has been a key part of engagement. ´ ‘I think sometimes keeping your body healthy is as important as keeping your mind healthy.’ ‘The zoom way of working is efficient but isn't always effective.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ian also engages with key stakeholders in Wales including the Secretary of State for Wales on regular basis, in his role he meets with businesses from all sectors in Wales and can provide an extensive and detailed view of the business intelligence. Ep 245Being Interviewed by Michael Jackson´s Bodyguard - The Matt Fiddes Show
In this episode, Jeannette is interviewed by Michael Jackson’s bodyguard, Matt Fiddes. He asks her about leading some of the world’s biggest travel firms, before leaving the industry to become an entrepreneur and setting up her mentoring, business advisory service and property companies. They talk about the various property business models. Discussing the pros and cons. In particular, about serviced accommodation and staycations. Moving on to discussing the current economic climate and how it is likely to impact interest rates, house prices and the type of property people want to stay or live in. As well as discussing the current state of the travel industry and how it is likely to evolve. Finishing up by talking about the power of social media, how it is changing and how to leverage it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Staycations are here to stay, which is an opportunity for serviced accommodation. Ep 244Matthew Campbell Laurenza - Lady Gaga’s Jewellery Designer Making Art Cherishable not Perishable
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Matthew Campbell Laurenza the co-founder and CEO of MCL Design. He is a sculptor, artist, designer, lecturer, and philanthropist. Matthew creates beautiful jewellery, which is worn by some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Pieces that people can display as art, as well as wear and use as a form of personal expression. He talks about how thinking outside the box has helped him quickly reach a global market and secure many famous clients. Including, Rhianna, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys, to name a few. Matthew explains why despite his work being in such high demand he keeps the price of his pieces accessible, so ordinary people can wear them too. He also tells Jeannette about some of the artists that inspire him and shares details of some of his upcoming exhibitions and appearances. KEY TAKEAWAYS Matthew´s work is heavily influenced by living and working in various parts of the world. Travel really does expand the mind. He believes in using high-quality materials that will last and look beautiful for many years to come. How people feel about a designer or brand has a significant impact on whether they buy or not. Being clear and honest with your staff helps to ensure that they do an excellent job and work efficiently. Trust your gut, but don´t be afraid to pay for advice from people that you know have the right expertise. Don’t be afraid to showcase what you can do, and your ideas. Dare to be different. Not being afraid to create something different has helped Matthew to secure big clients, like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Rosie, Taylor Swift, and Alicia Keys. BEST MOMENTS ‘So, when it's not in use as a piece of jewellery, it could be in use as a sculpture or a picture frame or a clock or something else. ´ ‘Luxury isn't necessarily about how much you pay for something.’ ‘For me, everything is produced by hand, we don't use computers, we don't use automated systems.’ ‘I think on the creative side, never be afraid to make something that you have a strong feeling about. It will turn out beautiful.’ ’The idea that somebody actually went out and bought a piece and is enjoying it is equally as satisfying to me as seeing somebody super famous wearing it.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. At the end of the day, choose 3 things to prioritise. That will laser-focus you. Movement (exercise) is a powerful way to get clarity. BEST MOMENTS‘Do your most important tasks at a time of the day when you are at your most energised. ´‘As a woman, you will know that your 28-day cycle can also affect your productivity, your mood, and how you feel about things.’‘I find personally that I get my best ideas, I get my clarity of thinking when I am exercising.’This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 242George Evans – The Truth to Being Transgender
In this episode, Jeannette talks to George Evans, who is an advocate for the trans community. He speaks openly about realising that he was a man despite being raised as a girl and his transition journey, which he started in his late teens. They discuss what being trans means and what it is like. George explains, what he did when he realised that the NHS was unable to help him to transition, how he met his girlfriend and how he felt while going through his transformation. As well as explaining the impact taking hormones had on his emotions, personality, and body. He also shares advice for others who find themselves in the same situation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Everyone needs to be true to themselves. Life is better when you are yourself. There is still a lack of information for transexuals to access and still very little understanding in society as a whole. Don’t go through things alone connect to others who are on the same journey as you. Now, there are quite a few trans men groups on social media. Be 100% sure before transitioning physically. Hormones transform your brain too; you feel different and react differently to things. You never stop taking testosterone and it takes a long time for it to transform your body. Asking trans people about their surgeries is highly likely to make them feel very uncomfortable. It is an extremely intimate question. The kind of question you would not dream of asking anyone else. It is hard for people around you to adjust to a new name, pronouns and the gender change you have made. In some states in America, you can still get fired for being trans. BEST MOMENTS ‘Gender and sexuality are very different things. ´ ‘Find someone to connect with, talk to somebody who’s going through it. Don’t just sit there and think I am alone.’ ‘I always describe being trans today as like, as the equivalent of, being gay in the 70s.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 241Own Your Own Life - Take Control of Your Destiny
In this episode, Jeannette talks about taking control of your life and your destiny, whatever that may be for you. She shares 10 simple steps anyone can take to do exactly that. Things Jeannette knows work because she has used them in her own life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Often, people feel out of control. Take note if you do feel that way. Your choices are your choices, and no one else’s. Knowing and accepting this will absolutely set you free. Stop blaming the economy or other people for your not being able to do things. Make some space for yourself to understand what you want. When you are clear about this you instantly become more in control. Write out a plan. It will change over time, but having one gives you a firm starting point. Invest in yourself, stay healthy, learn the skills you need and hire the people you need. Create new habits, it only takes 30 days to do so. Willpower only gets you so far, good habits drive you over the line. Taking shortcuts leads to long-term hardship in your life. BEST MOMENTS ‘Life happens for us, not to us. ´ ‘Taking accountability for your own life is liberating.’ ‘You get owt for nowt, you´ve got to take action.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 240Robin Hills Psychologist – Emotional Intelligence to Succeed in Business
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Robin Hills about emotional intelligence, emotional quotient, and psychometric profiling. He explains what they are and how people can learn how to use them to become more successful. To understand themselves, and what makes them make poor decisions so that they can change that and start to get out of their own way. KEY TAKEAWAYS For entrepreneurs, psychological resilience is important. Everyone can be more intelligent Different organisational cultures have an impact on emotional intelligence in business. Emotional Quotients (EQ) are all measurable. Emotional Intelligence (EI) goes beyond EQ and looks at things that can´t necessarily be measured. Emotional Intelligence enables you to combine your thinking with your feelings to make good decisions. What you say and how you say it, has a massive impact. Take time to identify what it is that winds you up and stops you from making good decisions. Take time when you are under pressure to learn more about yourself. We are all emotional beings; we learn and make decisions based on our emotions. If you are angry all the time everyone around you, will be too. Don´t try to be something you are not. If you are not a good fit in an organisation, go elsewhere. BEST MOMENTS ‘EQ is the emotional quotient. So, these are measures of how we use certain aspects of emotional intelligence. ´ ‘Emotional intelligence is the way in which you combine your thinking, with your feelings in order to make good decisions.’ ‘What is it that stops you from making good decisions? What is it that you need to do in order to work better when these situations can occur?’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 239Start With Why
In this episode, Jeannette talks about understanding your why, your purpose. We are all taught to focus on what we do rather on why we are doing it. Jeannette explains how to turn things on their head and start with why. A simple change in thought process that is incredibly powerful. KEY TAKEAWAYS We are all programmed to focus on what we do and how. Very few of us think about why we are doing it. When we meet others, we naturally ask “what do you do for a living?” If you do not know why you are doing something, there is a good chance that you are focusing on the wrong things. People buy from you based on either manipulation or inspiration. If you focus on inspiration, you make an emotional connection with customers, which keeps them coming back. BEST MOMENTS ‘Very often we focus on what we do, instead of why we do it. ´ ‘You have much more of an emotional connection when you focus on your why.’ ‘If you have a strong connection to your why, to your purpose, it will help carry you through.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. They can be used by anyone and effectively deployed in your personal as well as your business life.KEY TAKEAWAYS You only have one life, so the last thing you need is to waste time dithering and worrying about every decision you make. Successful people make decisions quickly, definitively and with confidence. Asking yourself a few key questions when you make decisions makes it far easier to overcome procrastination. Being clear about your purpose and your reason why is a key component of the decision-making process. Don’t let the fear of getting it wrong get in your way. Ep 234Steve Byrne CEO - Making it Personal with Travel Counsellors
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Steve Byrne who is the CEO of Travel Counsellors. They discuss the 3 evolutionary stages the business has gone through. A journey that resulted in double-digit growth every year to the point where turnover is now at £700 million. Steve explains how the company has benefitted from actively working to do the right thing for its customers and to be the best. They are a relationship-based business, so their people and trust are the glue that makes them strong. He explains that despite the pressures of CoVid they stuck to their values and how it enabled them to come through that crisis. He also talks about using sounding boards, making decisions, being resilient, staying in shape and how to expand overseas. KEY TAKEAWAYS We have looked at how we can grow by doing the right thing for our customers and colleagues. Too many travel firms expend all of their energy chasing new customers instead of looking after the ones that they already have. When you care more than anyone else, people notice the positive difference and come back to you repeatedly. Your career works in tandem with your personal life. You determine how they are blended. Surround yourself with the right people to act as a sounding board. When you have to make tough decisions, do it in the most caring way. Absorb headlines but don’t get overwhelmed by the details. You need to stay positive to be able to help. Most people want to be the best that they can be, so find ways to facilitate that. BEST MOMENTS ‘To keep it entrepreneurial you focus on growth and wanting to do better. ´ ‘Two-thirds of our business is repeat business… and the rest of it comes from referrals.’ ‘Build capacity within the team and create other leaders.’ ‘Learn not to worry about things that you cannot control.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 233How to be a Great Leader
In this episode, Jeannette talks about becoming a great leader. Providing advice that anyone who is in a leadership role can use to improve the way that they lead. The tips and strategies that she shares is highly relevant whether you have just been promoted and now lead a team or are a mature leader who wants to take the next step. KEY TAKEAWAYS Some people have natural attributes that help them to lead. But the vast majority of people can learn to become a good leader. Most people who get promoted into leadership roles are not provided with any targeted training to help them to lead effectively. Leaders need high emotional intelligence, the courage to make decisions, self-control and other that attributes Jeannette covers in the podcast. Good leaders do not micromanage. Being able to create win-win situations is important. Having a clear purpose, a place you want to get to and a plan to get there is essential. Have an eye for detail. It will help you to know when to dig in and when to ease off a little. Lead from the front and provide a good example. BEST MOMENTS ‘It is very different to lead than it is to follow. ´ ‘Leading can be really lonely… you need the courage of your conviction to be able to move forward.’ ‘Be authentic. People will absolutely see through fakes.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 232Building Your Business & Your Mind with Richard Stone
In this episode, Jeannette talks to Richard Stone who has spent 30+ years working in construction and development. He is also a TEDx speaker and mentor. Richard is passionate about mental health issues and providing support to others who need help with this. Richard talks about his early life and his business journey and what he has learned along the way. He also speaks extensively about taking care of your mental health, overcoming trauma, grief, and other life challenges, while at the same time providing the right sort of support to help others to do the same. KEY TAKEAWAYS Never leave things unsaid and always, always check in with people and make sure they are OK. The first step to effectively monitoring your mental health is regularly checking in with yourself and asking what am I feeling. How am I acting? Human beings are hardwired for connection. Even councillors have a supervisor to check in and make sure they are doing OK mentally. Everyone needs support with their mental health at some stage. There is a world of difference between mental illness and mental health issues. Being true to your values and genuine is the only way to be an effective leader. Treat your workers with respect. The people at the bottom of the pyramid are essential. Without them you are nothing. You won’t get innovation unless people feel that it is safe to share. Look at your team dynamics. Understanding how everyone fits together enables you to support your team and pick the right people for the tasks that need to be completed. Business owners need to learn to share the details of their failures as well as their successes. We can learn so much from each other. Running a small business is probably the loneliness place to be. There is no board of peers to support you and it is tough to secure finance. Connect with others for support. Don´t sweat the small stuff. How to stop doing that is explained in the podcast. BEST MOMENTS ‘I am a firm believer in our being where we are meant to be. ´ ‘Look at team dynamics and dynamics in meetings and dynamics when you are pitching all sorts of stuff.’ ‘For me, it is all about serving. It can be a lonely world out there, but it doesn´t need to be.’ ‘I don´t think we are really ever finished. We can always learn.’ This is the perfect time to get focused on what YOU want to really achieve in your business, career, and life. Ep 231Public Speaking a Fate Worse Than Death - How to Get Out of Your Own Way
In this episode, Jeannette talks about overcoming the fear of public speaking that most of us suffer from. She explains how to become more confident and deliver your message in an impactful way. Doing so in a way that will also enable you to improve your daily communication, which will strengthen your relationships, job prospects and many other aspects of your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Public speaking is a fantastic way to improve your day-to-day communication. Invest in some training. Practice, there are some great clubs and groups out there that enable you to deliver a speech and receive constructive feedback. At this point, the travel, food, and funeral arms of the Co-Op also merged. Around that time, Amanda took a redundancy package to set up her own business, from scratch.
