260 episodes — Page 5 of 6

Episode 60 - Gamer (47:55)
EWe discuss the 2009 Gerard Butler vehicle, GAMER, about live-action video-gaming of real live players, both in a simulated world where anything goes; and a Running Man/Gladiator-style fight for freedom from the dystopian prison system. Though not a great movie, Robert and I find plenty to discuss in this one. Worth seeing if you want to dig into some of the deeper questions out of a movie that tries really, really hard to be flash in the pan. Show notes and more at: https://www.actualanarchy.com/60 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/AnarchoCapitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

Episode 59 - WALL-E (51:49)
EWe hang on to the last vestiges of my youth as I turn 40 and talk about a children's movie with my friend since childhood, and co-host, Robert. WALL-E is a charming story of a lonely robot who gains sentience and becomes lonely; but there's also some ridiculous economic fallacies and a few strong propagandistic messages being pushed. We hope you enjoy this one! Episode 58 - Get Out (55:54)
ERobert and I start to implement a few optimizations to the format of the show as we discuss Jordan Peele's "Get Out" which is an excellent movie that uses perceptions related to race to mask the narrative of the story. We both really enjoyed this one and appreciate you bearing with us as we implement updates to the show. Episode 57 - The Last Jedi (1:31:08)
EWe travel to a galaxy far, far way with the Professional A$$hole to talk about episode VIII of the latest Star Wars trilogy of trilogies, "the Last Jedi". The Star Wars saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join galactic legends in an epic adventure unlocking mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past. We get into some deep nerdery on this one, and of course: spoilers all the time. EWe're going to own Christmas with Mike C. as we talk about the late-80's Bill Murray Christmas classic, "The Night the Reindeer Died". Oh wait....no, it's, "Scrooged"! Murray Cajun Christmas! Mike was our guest for our Halloween special on the Night of the Living Dead, and he may have just usurped another holiday! Father loves Beaver. Yule love it! EWe discuss yet another Christmas classic from the 80's, Trading Places, starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd in a modern-day (progressive) interpretation of the Prince and the Pauper. We are joined by Trey Weaver of the Subversion Webcast (the newest member of the Libertarian Union, and all around good guy) to discuss this nature vs. nurture, social engineering, comedy that has perhaps even more relevance today than it did in 1983. Episode 53 – War Machine (1:19:35)
EKyle from Foreign Policy Focus joins us to talk about the Brad Pitt movie, War Machine which is a satire on the quagmire of US foreign policy in Afghanistan. The story follows a charismatic general who in a policy of "change guys" seems to think he and his team will be the solution to winning the hearts and minds of the population, and thus the war itself. We were very happy to have Kyle join us to bring a level of expertise that would otherwise be missing from an analysis of a film such as this. Episode 52 - The Founder (1:27:25)
EHappy holidays everyone! And what better way to open the "commercialization" of the season than by talking about "The Founder" and how the McDonald's corporation became the global presence it is today. Robert and I go solo on this one and get fairly deep into the concepts of persistence, specialization and the division of labor. This was a perfect meatball of a movie for us and we hope you enjoy it. Episode 51 - Poverty Inc. with Walter Block (1:29:53)
EWalter Block joins us for our Thanksgiving Special. Being the beginning of the holiday season, with good will toward man and all that, it felt appropriate to discuss charitable giving and the premises of the documentary, "Poverty Inc.". One recommendation, before watching the movie, please read the article by Block and Fryzek, then watch, then re-read the paper. You will get much more out of the movie and gain some economic insights that are easily missed. Episode 50 - Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1:03:36)
EWe open the holiday travel season with the 20th anniversary of a John Hughes mid-80's classic, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" with our returning guest, the Professional Asshole. We get into a very dated movie that could not be made today as most of the problems that arise have since been solved by technology. Still, a kind of fun movie that may be worth a watch every few years. Check out our guests previous appearance where we talked about "3:10 to Yuma" at actualanarchy.com/37 The show notes page for this episode can be found at actualanarchy.com/50 Happy holidays everyone, and we wish you safe travels. Episode 49 - Inequality For All (1:20:27)
EEsoteric Entity joins us to discuss the Robert Reich's "Inequality For All" - a leftist-propaganda puff-piece that caters to the uninformed and lowest common denominator for economic analysis. Described on Amazon, where it has over a thousand GLOWING reviews as: "A passionate argument on behalf of the middle class, Inequality for All features Robert Reich–professor, best-selling author, and Clinton cabinet member–as he demonstrates how the widening income gap has a devastating impact on the American economy. The film is an intimate portrait of a man whose lifelong goal remains protecting those who are unable to protect themselves. Through his singular perspective, Reich explains how the massive consolidation of wealth by a precious few threatens the viability of the American workforce and the foundation of democracy itself. In this Inconvenient Truth for the economy, Reich uses humor and a wide array of facts to explain how the issue of economic inequality affects each and every one of us." I'm sure you'll find that we disagree with this assessment and the Amazon reviews. Episode 48 - The Shining (1:58:12)
EHeeeeeeeere's Johnny! We bring back two former guests to tag-team on the Kubrick classic, the Shining. Doc Brown from our Episode 41 on It, and Patrick MacFarlane of the Liberty Weekly Podcast and our Episode 35 on Rogue One join us in the Gold Room to share a few drinks with Lloyd - on the house of course. This was to be our Halloween special, but schedules kept getting pushed due to illness, contracts and obligations to employers. The fact that there is so much ambiguity built into the movie, that it can be debated for decades after is a testament to how well made this film is. This should be a film that satisfies Robert’s desire in a story to have tension and struggle within the narrative. We have genuine unease and sense of dread for the character - despite the fact they we “know” going into it that Jack does go crazy and attempts to murder his family with an axe. Episode 45 - Ghost and The Darkness (1:40:52)
EWe go lion-hunting in Tsavo with Country Sam of the Living Country in the City Podcast and talk the 1996 Val Kilmer flick, the Ghost and the Darkness. This is our third Kilmer movie we've done, and second in a row - so one might think we have a Val-fetish, and you would be correct. It won't be the last one we do with him in it. In 1896, a construction engineer from the British Army, J.H. Patterson (Kilmer) is sent to build a railway bridge across Uganda's Tsavo River for the British East African Railway. Soon after he arrives, workmen begin to disappear at night from their tents never to be seen alive again. The engineer soon discovers that a pair of man-eating lions are stalking around the bridge and campsites, killing the workmen for food. He tries a number of different methods to get rid of them, but the beasts always seem to know what Patterson is doing and avoid being shot. After 30 men have been killed Patterson's boss recruits a hunter, Charles Remington (Douglas) to hunt down and destroy the lions. The Tsavo Man-Eaters were a pair of man-eating Tsavo lions responsible for the deaths of a number of construction workers on the Kenya-Uganda Railway from March through December 1898. The significance of this pair of lions was their unusual behavior, such as the number of men killed and the manner of the attacks. EOur Batman man from Adelaide, Australia, Shaheen the Anarcap, joins us once again to discuss the 3rd installment of the Christopher Nolan Ba-trilogy: The Dark Knight Rises. Bane is the commie villain, and Cat Woman is the commie ally in this lengthy closing chapter on Christian Bale's Batman. When The Dark Knight Rises opens, Batman is in self-imposed exile. Even more dangerous is the emergence of a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham are driving the reluctant superhero out of retirement. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for the evil awaiting him. Shaheen always has a fun and interesting take on all things Bat. You can bat-signal him on the Twitterz at @ElcoAlFares Google Description: It has been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale), in collusion with Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman), vanished into the night. A movie about a totalitarian-state hell bent on stopping war and crime by stamping out human emotion (and calling war, crime and violence a different name). This is a really fun episode. In a fascist future where all forms of feeling are illegal, a man in charge of enforcing the law rises to overthrow the system. Emotion is outlawed and human behavior is controlled by a drug, Prozium, that hinders emotion. A government official is in charge of going around and eliminating potential threats to the regime. When the official forgets to take his dose of Prozium, a whole new world is opened up to him and he takes on the establishment that he's supposed to be working for. The Actual Anarchy Podcast is all about Maximum Freedom. Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. If it's voluntary, we're cool with it. If it's not, then it violated the Non-Aggression Principle and Property Rights - the core tenants of Libertarian Theory - and hence - human freedom. We publish new episodes on Sunday just in time for your Monday commute; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics). For our show where we talk about movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective, we often watch them on our various devices via Netflix, Amazon Prime or on VUDU (which lets you redeem UV content as well). The VUDU one is nice because once it is in there, you know it will still be there a few months later. Actual Anarchy, an anarchy unlike what the average idiot thinks it would be. Anarchy means no rulers, not no rules. The non-aggression principle and a respect of property rights are what makes it go. Episode 39 - Pulp Fiction (1:52:20)
EWell, it's finally come to this. Robert's number one favoritist movie of all time, Quentin Tarantino's 1994 masterpiece, Pulp Fiction. The movie that revived a few careers and let Samuel L. Jackson rip. Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega are two hitmen who are out to retrieve a suitcase stolen from their employer, mob boss Marsellus Wallace. Wallace has also asked Vincent to take his wife Mia out a few days later when Wallace himself will be out of town. Butch Coolidge is an aging boxer who is paid by Wallace to lose his next fight. The lives of these seemingly unrelated people are woven together comprising of a series of funny, bizarre and uncalled-for incidents. We do our best to parse this one that has so much to unpack. It's a very well done movie that stands up over the course of time. Show notes and more at: www.actualanarchy.com/39 Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast! Episode 38 - 13 Assassins (1:08:48)
EIt's a total massacre! Robert and I gear up for battle against the corrupt, sadistic Lord Naritsugu in the Japanese samurai film, 13 Assassins. There's a surprising amount of discussion points here including the duty and honor versus morality and choice by the individual. This is a fun movie with some pretty epic fight scenes and a strong message. El Googel: In this remake of a 1963 film based on historical events, Shinzaemon Shimada (Koji Yakusho) leads a team of assassins in 19th-century Japan to eliminate the ruthless Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira (Goro Inagaki), who is wreaking havoc against his own people. Hired secretly by a government official hoping to end Matsudaira's reign of terror, Shimada recruits the best samurai in Japan and then sets a trap for the lord's large contingent of faithful bodyguards. Episode 37 - 3:10 to Yuma (1:14:53)
EWe race to the train station on 3:10 to Yuma, the Russell Crowe and Christian Bale morality western about outlaws and bandits. Special guest, Douglas Gregory of HQATL (https://hqatl.com/) and writer at the Actual Anarchy site joins us for a spirited discussion. The Google Description: Outlaw Ben Wade (Russell Crowe) terrorizes 1800s Arizona, especially the Southern Railroad, until he is finally captured. Wade must be brought to trial, so Dan Evans (Christian Bale), the owner of a drought-stricken ranch, volunteers to escort him to the train. Along the trail, a grudging respect forms between the men, but danger looms at every turn, and the criminal's men are in pursuit. Who's right, who's wrong, who knows? Episode 32 - Don't Breathe (1:14:52)
EJust Robert and me, just me and Robert on this one, talking about the 2016 home-invasion thriller Don't Breathe. Plenty of moral ambiguity and twists and turns in this one. It's almost like this movie was made for this podcast. We sink in for almost as long as the movie on some pretty tough questions. This is a fun episode. The Googz: "Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex and Money are three Detroit thieves who get their kicks by breaking into the houses of wealthy people. Money gets word about a blind veteran who won a major cash settlement following the death of his only child. Figuring he's an easy target, the trio invades the man's secluded home in an abandoned neighborhood. Finding themselves trapped inside, the young intruders must fight for their lives after making a shocking discovery about their supposedly helpless victim." Episode 31 - Dumb and Dumber (1:04:03)
EDumb and Dumber on the Actual Anarchy Podcast. We bring on contributor Scott Albright to discuss this film from a Rothbardian and Bastiatian perspective. At first glance, one might think a comedy with Jim Carrey lighting farts on fire might not have much to discuss in the way of libertarianism and economics, but that would be incorrect my friends. We go just over an hour discussing this classed from the 90's that inspired so many terrible sequels. You can find Scott's work on this site, as well as the Front Range Voluntaryist. But when a government hibernation experiment goes awry, Bowers awakens in the far-flung future, he is now the smartest man alive. The slumbering duo is forgotten when the base they are stored on is closed down and are left in stasis until 2505. Episode 29 - The Dark Knight Part 2 (1:38:02)
EWe're back at it again with our guest all the way from Adelaide. Shahin returns to discuss the back-half of the Christopher Nolan meat in the Batman trilogy sandwich, the Dark Knight. The second half of the Batman film, the Dark Knight starring Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. Prompted by the recent death of Adam West who played the campy 60's version of Batman, we take on this beast of a film. Considered by many to be one of the greatest comic book film adaptations ever (which might be expected when Christopher Nolan is at the helm). Episode 27 - Finding Nemo (1:15:03)
EHappy Father's Day! With many movies to choose from, we were happy to choose one that is a favorite of our guest: Finding Nemo. The story of one father's quest to save his last-surviving child. He overcomes the trauma of losing his wife and most of his other kids to travel thousands of miles from home encountering killer sharks, war refuse mines, surfer turtles dude-bruh, stinging jellyfish (don't tase me bro!), and a forgetful friend. Here is the Google info: Marlin (Albert Brooks), a clown fish, is overly cautious with his son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), who has a foreshortened fin. When Nemo swims too close to the surface to prove himself, he is caught by a diver, and horrified Marlin must set out to find him. A blue reef fish named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) -- who has a really short memory -- joins Marlin and complicates the encounters with sharks, jellyfish, and a host of ocean dangers. Meanwhile, Nemo plots his escape from a dentist's fish tank. Episode 26 - Tombstone (1:39:55)
ELet's talk Tombstone and the not so wild west. What else is wrong about the opening narration by Robert Mitchum? Kurt Russell is a libertarian! Anybody catch the "Equal Pay for Equal Work" signage? Disequlibrium of violence (bad guys kill, no big deal; good guy kills one and is all sentimental - at first). Great quotes in this movie - an example of "parts greater than the whole" movie. Our friend Kenny the Wizard from the Wizardly Wisdom Podcast and LibertarianNerds.com joins us for a raucous and weaving discussion about many things related to (and not even related) to this now classic Western. You can check out more of Kenny's works here: www.LibertarianNerds.com www.WalterBlock.com And now some background on Tombstone from the Googs: Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) and his brothers, Morgan (Bill Paxton) and Virgil (Sam Elliott), have left their gunslinger ways behind them to settle down and start a business in the town of Tombstone, Ariz. While they aren't looking to find trouble, trouble soon finds them when they become targets of the ruthless Cowboy gang. Now, together with Wyatt's best friend, Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer), the brothers pick up their guns once more to restore order to a lawless land. Episode 25 - The Running Man (1:11:00)
EIn what could become a string of Arnold movies that we do in coming months, we take on the dystopian-nightmare in the post-economic collapse world of 2017 to discuss the Stephen King inspired film, the Running Man. The movie is right up our alley as an anti-authoritarian message that shows the propaganda and entertainment that is pushed to maintain control over the masses. Get strapped into your metal-under-the-city-bobsled and journey with us into the arena. In the year 2019, America is a totalitarian state where the favorite television program is "The Running Man" -- a game show in which prisoners must run to freedom to avoid a brutal death. Having been made a scapegoat by the government, an imprisoned Ben Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has the opportunity to make it back to the outside again by being a contestant on the deadly show, although the twisted host, Damon Killian (Richard Dawson), has no intention of letting him escape. It's a fun popcorn flick with peak Schwarzenegger and one of the worst villains (on a scale of corny-ness) in cinematic film history: Dynamo Here is an article reflecting on the technology on display 30 years after the movies was made (and in which it is set at the very beginning): http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/the-violent-post-truth-2017-predicted-in-the-running-man-we-re-living-in-it-a7506776.html Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Running_Man_(1987_film) If you too are inspired by Arnie to start working out again, check out Turbulence Training at: www.ReadRothbard.com/TT Here is the interview we did with the Battle for Liberty: www.battleforliberty.com/39 Thank you for joining us on this episode of the Actual Anarchy Podcast. Episode 24 - Hacksaw Ridge (2:06:51)
EWe discuss the anti-war/pro-war Mel Gibson film Hacksaw Ridge that follows the story of PFC Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector to aggressive violence as he enlists in the military to compromise his principles (though the story seems to deny this). Here is the flawed, and incorrect Google description: The true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who won the Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms during WWII on religious grounds. Doss was drafted and ostracized by fellow soldiers for his pacifist stance but went on to earn respect and adoration for his bravery, selflessness and compassion after he risked his life -- without firing a shot -- to save 75 men in the Battle of Okinawa. In the show we bring up a number of things that don't fit in with the official narrative we are told in school, media and political recollection. You can continue believe what you have been told, or you can realize that being told something might have more to do with the tellers than what is told. Episode 23 - Dazed and Confused (1:41:26)
EAlright, alright, alright...if you were listening to our last show and thinking that we should have a guest...as in, "it would be a lot cooler if we did" you're in luck. This week's show is about the coming-of-age high school movie set in 1976, Dazed and Confused with our special guest Mike Brancatelli of the podcast Mikeadelic! Here is the ridiculously wrong Google description: This coming-of-age film follows the mayhem of group of rowdy teenagers in Austin, Texas, celebrating the last day of high school in 1976. The graduating class heads for a popular pool hall and joins an impromptu keg party, however star football player Randall "Pink" Floyd (Jason London) has promised to focus on the championship game and abstain from partying. Meanwhile, the incoming freshmen try to avoid being hazed by the seniors, most notably the sadistic bully Fred O'Bannion (Ben Affleck). We discuss several themes ranging from the drug war, compulsory schooling, government-induced mental illness and more in this episode. EThe night was... humid... The night was...moist.... The night was...sultry.... The night was...mother's day! The perfect opening for a description of our Mother's Day Special featuring the Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal film, Throw Momma From the Train. Here is the description: Larry (Billy Crystal), an author with a cruel ex-wife, Margaret (Kate Mulgrew), teaches a writing workshop where Owen (Danny DeVito), one of his students, is fed up with his domineering mother (Anne Ramsey). When Owen watches a Hitchcock classic that seems to mirror his own life, he decides to put the movie's plot into action and offers to kill Margaret, if Larry promises to murder his mom. Before Larry gets a chance to react to the plan, it seems that Owen has already sealed Margaret's fate. We realize that this was probably mistakenly categorized as a movie for this holiday, but no matter. It's a film that we both enjoyed watching and discussing from a Rothbardian Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. You get some insights into Robert's writing process and some general banter between the two of us. We hope you enjoy and happy mother's day. Word to your mother. Call her, seriously. We hope you enjoyed the discussion, and we may have a surprise bonus for Patreon supporters as a result. As always, like, comment, subscribe (on YouTube!), share, et al. Never miss an episode. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. Episode 21 - Star Trek Beyond (1:42:28)
EIt may say "Star Trek Beyond" in the title, but we go waaaaay beyond in this one with our guest Mark E. Deardorff of www.ScienceViaMarkets.com. In fact, for nearly 2 hours we talk about science-fiction in general, authors, warp-theory, energy mass, holodecks, replicators, Einstein, and more. We get side-tracked quite a bit on this one and don't give as much of a movie synopsis/analysis like our normal fare - so for those interested in that, here is the marketing slick for the movie and the trailer: A surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that's aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet. Episode 20 - The Big Short (1:50:41)
EWe bring on a special guest, Daniel J., to discuss the allegedly true (hence the asterisk) story behind the housing bust and subsequent financial crisis of 2008 as depicted in The Big Short (also a book of the same name by Michael Lewis) . There is a lot going on here, and we don't even get to the asymmetrical aptitudes of the players vs. the regulators, or the scandal involving the regulators spending their time looking at porn, or the alarm-bells being sounded by the likes of Brooksley Born that went unheeded. Here is the marketing spin on the movie: "Based on the true story of four outsiders who saw what the big banks, media and government refused to: the global collapse of the economy. A bold investment leads them into the dark underbelly of banking, where everyone and everything is in question. In 2008, Wall Street guru Michael Burry realizes that a number of subprime home loans are in danger of defaulting. Burry bets against the housing market by throwing more than $1 billion of his investors' money into credit default swaps. His actions attract the attention of banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), hedge-fund specialist Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and other greedy opportunists. Together, these men make a fortune by taking full advantage of the impending economic collapse in America." Needless to say, the Austrian-analysis disputes this and much more. Other things that we failed to mention were that these people in the film weren't the only ones to see this coming (Ron Paul & Peter Schiff were talking about it for years) nor were they the only ones betting against the housing market (Kyle Bass). Needless to say - the official narrative and the story told in the film are highly dubious. We hope that you learn something in this episode and enjoy listening! Episode 19 - War Dogs (1:48:53)
EThis week we discuss the movie about some dude-bro international arms dealers, War Dogs starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller. It's a ridiculous idea made possible by ridiculous government policy. The film follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a $300 million deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government. Just Robert and I on this one as we kick off some rust from not recording a show for a few weeks. Special guest, Kevin LeCureux joins us for a lively discussion on book, the 1972 TV special and the 2012 CGI film with Zac Efron, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, Betty White and Danny DeVito. Episode 16 - The Breakfast Club (1:44:19)
E"It will be Anarchy!" We bring on a special guest to talk about the John Hughes classic, "the Breakfast Club". This iconic movie really just serves as a springboard into a copious variety of topics ranging from schools, prisons, gun rights, the industrial revolution, monarchy and more. They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m. they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. John Hughes, creator of the critically acclaimed Sixteen Candles, wrote, directed and produced this hilarious and often touching comedy starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. To the outside world they were simply the Jock, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the Kook, but to each other, they would always be "The Breakfast Club". Our guest Drake Lundstrom is working on a really cool project that we will feature when it is ready for release.
