Episode 160 - It's a Wonderful Life (1:09:37)
EMerry Christmas! Our pal Mike C. joins us to get in on a little Jimmy Stewart flick called, “It’s A Wonderful Life.” We'll get into over this one as we have a sneaking suspicion that Robert doesn't like this one. We'll make sure to ring that bell so some wings get redistributed properly. We get into all sorts of discussions about the market and how it serves people better and at varying levels of quality and price. We talk about bank runs and how they are a check on poor policy and we also discuss how kindness begets kindness and how treating your fellow man as you would like to be treated makes the world a better place. Not to mention my side-quest into Ancient Aliens and the Pyramid Code. This is a fun one. Join us next week as Raylene Lightheart returns for a New Year's movie, "When Harry Met Sally". Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/160 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

Episode 159 - Gremlins (1:18:08)
EA movie that will kick off that Christmas spirit, "Gremlins". Our guest will be Rocky Ferrenburg and we'll be sure to keep him dry so he stays fuzzy and cute. Is it more Christmas than Die Hard? We'll hash it out. We also get into some of the anti-capitalist messaging at the heart of this aimless Christmas-filled flick. EThis week we bring back our Batman guy, Shaheen from Australia, to talk about "The Killing Joke" which was part of the source material for the hit-movie "Joker" that we covered a few weeks ago with another guest as Shaheen had fallen ill. We'll get his take on that movie during this one, so it'll be a bit of a twofer. We'll be back next week with a movie that will kick off that Christmas spirit, "Gremlins". Episode 157 - The Social Network (1:24:46)
ELast week was our Thanksgiving episode where we celebrated the spirit of giving. This week, we're going to celebrate the spirit of entrepreneurship by discussing "The Social Network" with an entrepreneur. This is a fun discussion talking about something that has since become ubiquitous to so many in their daily lives, Facebook. Our guest is Miguel Duque, a business coach with MAPS Business Coaching (mymapscoach.com), offering weekly 1-on-1 coaching for business owners and entrepreneurs across all industries, and he created a free online community called Amagi Entrepreneurs. We have a great discussion centering on IP, tact in business, and the role of the entrepreneur. Episode 156 - Cast Away (1:14:44)
EWe tackle "Cast Away" for our Thanksgiving episode this year as Tom Hanks' final words in the film are "Thank you". We want to express our gratitude for our listeners and the abundance afforded us by the vestiges of capitalism that raise the standard of living so that luxuries of the past are taken for granted in the present. Our guest is Keith Knight of “Don’t Tread on Anyone” and “Liberty Weekly”. This guy can talk a mile a minute, so we’ll try to keep up. Jesse has emerged from the chaos in a daring escape but faces an uncertain future where he is willing to pay any price to find freedom. Our guest is Jared Wall of Anarcho Land where one of his projects, called "Breaking Liberty", is an analysis of the series "Breaking Bad". He has two books out now and will be releasing a third. Next week, we're going to be like nature and oppress the shit out of Tom Hanks in "Cast Away" with Keith Knight of “Don’t Tread on Anyone” and “Liberty Weekly”. Episode 154 - They Shall Not Grow Old (1:14:39)
EWe commemorate the 101st anniversary of the armistice marking cease-fire and the end to hostilities in the Great War, now known as World War I, as it, unfortunately, set the table for a 2nd conflict that was even larger and now featured nazis and communists. Peter Jackson's documentary-take on the conflict in "They Shall Not Grow Old" which is a bringing-to-life account of the footage that is over 100 years old, with interviews from about 50 years ago mated with modern technology to bring vibrancy and color to the footage to bring a never-before-experienced look at the horrors of the Great War. Our pal, Mike C. joins us for the discussion as our stars went out alignment with Jeff Deist of the Mises Institute who is running an event with Ron Paul this weekend. You can view that event here (the Scott Horton talk ties right into our discussion, but they are all excellent): https://youtu.be/IgoEFSrRnds We will be back next week to discuss the Breaking Bad movie, "El Camino" with Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty. Episode 153 - Waterworld (1:35:48)
EDry land is not a myth. We haven't seen Waterworld six times like the Cable Guy, but we have seen it enough times and recently enough to do an episode on it with our pal, Peter R. Quinones (otherwise known as Mance Rayder) of the Free Man Beyond the Wall Podcast. Get ready for a deep-dive into the NAP on this one. Peter R. Quinones is managing editor of the Libertarian Institute and hosts the Free Man Beyond the Wall podcast. He released his first book, Freedom Through Memedom – The 31-day Guide to Waking Up to Liberty in November 2017. It reached #4 in the Libertarian Section on Amazon. He has spoken at Liberty Forum in Manchester, New Hampshire and is currently co-producing a documentary entitled, “The Monopoly on Violence,” which is scheduled for a 2020 release. It will feature the most prominent figures in libertarianism explaining how nation-states came into existence, the atrocities they commit and what a truly open libertarian society would look like. Join us next week as we discuss "They Shall Not Grow Old" for Armistice Day, hopefully with Jeff Deist of the Ludwig von Mises Institute. EPain does not exist in this dojo. We hijack Halloween with a tangentially related movie, the Karate Kid. We wax on and wax philosophical on this coming of age flick with the wondrous Raylene Lightheart of Blastoff! With Johnny Rocket. Strike first. Strike hard. No mercy. We’ll be back next week to talk “Waterworld” with our pal, Pete Quinones AKA “Mance Rayder” of the Free Man Beyond the Wall Podcast. Episode 151 - Joker (1:16:53)
EStriking while the iron is hot, so to speak, we talk "Joker" which is taking October by storm becoming a box office sensation breaking all sorts of records. This of course, after critics panned it and mainstream media classified it as "dangerous". This isn't just a comic book movie, this is a fully articulated film that could shed its comic skin and still have significant impact. We had planned on having our Batman-man from Australia, but he has come down with an illness, so Captain A who was our guest for "Crazy Heart" who had also approached us to talk about the movie will be our guest this week. Next week, we'll be bringing you an obliquely Halloween-themed flick, "The Karate Kid" with the uniquely awesome Raylene Lightheart of Blastoff! with Johnny Rocket. Episode 150 - Zombieland (1:05:59)
ELimber up and get ready to enjoy the little things as we welcome back Rachel from Cannabis Heals Me to talk about "Zombieland". The new one is currently in theaters now, so we thought it would be a good time to hit up the original. This is not an SJW-friendly movie, which is just our style. It's even got the great Bill Murray in it. It's time to nut up or shut up! Why are we alive when everybody around us has turned to meat? Coming up next, we'll put on a happy face and send in the clowns with a review of the hot topic movie, "Joker". Joining us will be our Batman-man from down under, the wonderful Shaheen. Episode 149 - Dune (1:04:46)
EPumpkin spice season so we dive into David Lynch's adaptation of “Dune”. We return with some spice this week as Anarchist Luke Tatum of the Culture of Peace Podcast and the new game studio, Human Action Studios, joins us for this one. Luke recently read the novel, so there is some compare and contrast, as well as discussion about the upcoming adaptation that is more true to the novel coming late next year from the guy who brung you “Blade Runner 2049”. Next week we shall return from the dead as we discuss “Zombieland” with Rachel of Cannabis Heals Me. “Zombieland 2” is hitting theaters later this month, so there’s no time like the present to do an episode on the original. Episode 148 - Spirited Away (1:13:59)
EWe welcome back Olof the Anarcho Viking to discuss a movie he claims is so awesome that he's watched it 20 times. "Spirited Away" is an award-winning visual masterpiece with a coming-of-age story fused with the Shinto religion... Asian Fusion if you will. It's not exactly good for young kids, but it does have some interesting and somewhat confusing things happening that might be great if you're on an acid trip. Olof was our guest for “The Outlaw King” where we brought some of that triple-H heat to the discussion. You can check that out at Actual Anarchy. Com / 107 and Last Nighters . Com / 50 He was to be our guest for “The Truman Show” but other commitments came up, and he was filled-in for by the venerable Mike C. Episode 146 - Straight Outta Compton (1:18:11)
EWe are back to discuss "Straight Outta Compton" with the Afrolibertarian. NWA unleashed a whole new genre of music, telling stories of how it is in their neighborhood and with a brash tone that called immediate attention to their daily plight. They found a large audience, even out in suburban America, to make an indelible impact that stays with us to this day. This is a sentimental journey that only scratches the surface of all the topics we wanted to discuss. Per our guest's recommendation in our post-show bonus content, if you want a fuller picture of the story check out "The Defiant Ones" on HBO. Catch us next week as we discuss Clint Eastwood's "The Mule" with returning guest, Rocky Ferrenburg. Episode 145 - Back to the Future (1:15:32)
EGreat Scott! We smash that accelerator to hit 88 MPH as we analyze "Back to the Future" with our friend, Doc Brown. No, not the Doc Brown from the movie, but the one who joined us for "The Shining" and "It" almost two long years ago. Prepare to generate 1.21 Gigawatts and get your damn hands off her. We get into some conspiracy and predictions from the film and also talk about whether we’d be willing to go back to 1955 ourselves - and give up all the improved standard of living since then. We also talk about how even the DeLorean was a casualty of the drug war. We shall return next week to discuss "Straight Outta Compton" with the Afrolibertarian. EWe're hitting up "The Warriors" this time around with one of our favourite returning guests. The armies of the night number 100,000; they outnumber the police 5 to 1; and tonight they’re after the Warriors. We talk about how the Cops are the biggest gang of them all. It’s a story about a driven, former Olympic-level athlete who had a horrific accident and devoted her intense, focused energy on becoming a success at running celebrity, high-stakes poker games with the elite - and the ensuing fallout. Episode 140 - Star Trek: TNG - S3E16 The Offspring (56:04)
EWe boldly continue our summertime mission with our pal, Patrick MacFarlane of the Liberty Weekly Podcast discussing episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation. You can check out Pat’s show at: http://www.libertyweekly.net This one is Season 3, Episode 16 - The Offspring. Hoping to further his creator’s work and perpetuate his species, Data creates and android named Lal, who identifies as female. Is she a creation or an offspring. Do the rights afforded the father extend to his creation? There is some administrative fireworks between Picard and Admiral Haftel that are unfortunately defused by the plot convenience of Lal’s cascade failure, but this is still a fun episode that explores the concepts and situations around parenting, social interactions and education. Episode 139 - Reds (1:28:03)
EWe talk about the epic film “Reds” which follows John Reed as he covers the Bolshevik Revolution as an idealistic journalist with utopian visions of successfully implementing socialism. Our guest is Jon Reed (no relation) and we have a barn-burner of a discussion about this marathon of a movie that has some many discussion-nuggets that our show went a little long. A Ronald Reagan favorite. #9 on the top ten list of "epics". An obsession-project for Warren Beatty who would shoot up to 100 takes and keep the film rolling so that he had over two weeks of footage. This movie destroyed his relationship with Diane Keaton and got Gene Hackman to refuse a role a decade later. His speech scene instigated the crew to strike over "exploitation" demanding higher wages. Our guest has a penchant for long movies, apparently. His first appearance being for the nearly-3-hour DiCaprio flick "The Aviator". Jon Reed’s a communications professional who’s been a writer and video creator for the past 20 years. He enjoys debating current events and explaining the blessings of liberty and how to get it and long walks on the beach. Jon’s a movie buff, wine lover, and introvert who enjoys his time chillin at home, or hanging out with a select few people who spike his intellect and curiosity...and cats...he’s a cat person. EWe're back and we're ringing a bell. We'll wrap up “Batman v Superman” and also tackle the debacle that is “Justice League”. Our man from Adelaide joins us once again to put on a clinic on the DCEU and try to make sense of it all. We also have a discussion on the Marvel movies from the MCU, with a little “Man of Steel” spice added in for flavor with our Australian friend, Shaheen. #ReleaseTheSnyderCut We'll be back next week talking about the communist revolution movie "Reds" with Jon from Libertarianism For Normal People. Episode 137 - Bad Times at the El Royale (1:13:23)
EWe hit you with “Bad Times at the El Royale” starring Jeff Lebowski and an ensemble cast. Set in the late 60’s, several strangers who are each walking contradictions, meet by chance at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a former hotspot hotel straddling the California/Nevada border. Morality becomes different depending on which side of the line you're on. This is a fun discussion on a Tarantino-esque film that folds over itself, but leaves rough edges so you can fill in some of the blanks in the story on your own - intentionally. We promise that the next episode will be our wrap-up on Batman v Superman and also a discussion on Justice League with a little Man of Steel spice added in for flavor with our Australian friend, Shaheen. Episode 125 - The Passion of the Christ (1:18:05)
EWe are joined by Stephen from AnarchoChristian to discuss the Mel Gibson movie, "The Passion of the Christ" for Easters. This was a potential powder-keg of an episode with two atheists and a Christian guest with a very controversial movie that intersects the not-polite conversation topics of politics and religion. We cross the streams for this extra-long Easter episode. The Passion of The Christ focuses on the last twelve hours of Jesus of Nazareth’s life. The film begins in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after The Last Supper. Jesus must resist the temptations of Satan. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, Jesus is then arrested and taken within the city walls of Jerusalem where leaders of the Pharisees confirm him with the accusations of blasphemy and his trial results in a condemnation to death. Episode 123 - The Truman Show (1:16:47)
EWe pop into biosphere II in the Dark-City dome from the Hunger Games to battle it out with the socialist, Jim Carrey, as we discuss his 1998 film "The Truman Show" directed by Peter Weir. The movie is all about a utopian central-planner playing the role of a god (or a government for that matter) in the life of an unwitting subject of their hubris of control. There is plenty of philosophical meat to chew on in this one. We get into a wordy discussion with our returning guest Mike C. who admirably filled in for our other friend, Olof the Anarcho-Viking, who had a scheduling conflict arise recently. We will be sure to have him on for a movie discussion in the near future. Episode 122 - Behind the Curve (1:07:54)
EWe're about to get crazy with the cheeze-wiz. Where is the curvature? This old-world idea has been resurrected in recent years, even some NBA players had made claims to it...that the Earth is flat. In libertarian circles, it has been one more useful tool in the process of weeding out FB friends. The flat-earthers feel like they are the correct and they are a marginalized group on the edge of science that follows the Gandhi “first they laugh at you.” We shall discuss. We'll find our way to Shell Beach with him on the barrelhead. Separated from his wife Emma, amnesiac John Murdoch awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings. Things get weird when we are introduced to the Borg-like vampires who control the world above in tabernacle-choir fashion using their collective telekinesis to reshape the lives of others. Their quest to save their species by understanding what it means to be “human” creates a dystopian laboratory on a floating disc in space. EWe are joined by a yout from the Liberty Weekly Podcast to discuss a lawyer-themed movie, My Cousin Vinny. That's right, Patrick MacFarlane is joining us to discuss another movie based on lawyering, and it should be a great time as we explore this Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei flick that still holds up to this day. Two naive youts traveling from New York City to college in California drive through Alabama and are erroneously arrested, and accused of homicide. Luckily, one of them has a cousin who's an attorney - Vincent Gambini, a previous auto repairman from Brooklyn who just passed his bar exam after his 6th attempt. Vinny's never been in court - or in Alabama - and when he lands with his leather-clad fashionista sweetheart, to attempt his first case, hilarity ensues - for him and the deep South! EWe do an analysis of the Coen Brothers latest effort, the Ballad of Buster Scruggs. It's a series of 6-western themed vignettes with the requisite Coen-quirkiness. Each story has a few interesting points for the sake of our discussion...and what do you know, it comes out to enough for a show. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs recounts the narrative of a sharp-shooting vocalist. In Near Algodones, a would be bank-robber gets his due to say the very least. Meal Ticket is a dreary story around two fatigued weary traveling entertainers. All Gold Canyon is an nearly one man show about a miner digging for gold, while a lady finds a startling level of adoration, alongside a portion of life's savage incongruity, on a wagon train over the prairies in The Gal Who Got Rattled. And lastly, spooky feels frequent The Mortal Remains as a Woman downpours judgment upon a diverse group of fellow carriage companions each with a different philosophy on life. We throw about ten minutes at each story and this falls right into Robert’s wheelhouse. Join us for the lively discussion. And next week, get ready, we’re doing the goofy classic My Cousin Vinny with our lawyer friend, and fellow podcaster, Patrick MacFarlane of the Liberty Weekly Podcast. Show notes at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/118 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. Episode 117 - Incredibles 2 (1:04:59)
EWe don our super suits one more time and get back into the fray with Incredibles 2. Brad Bird is posing some questions here that we really enjoyed even though the movie plot has a few holes and never truly resolves. Helen is called on to help bring Supers back, and Bob must juggle the daily heroics of home life. But when a new villain arises with a sinister plot, the Parrs meet the challenge together! We'll be back next with the Ballad of Buster Scruggs, catch the newest Coen brothers film on Netflix and then give us a listen. Episode 116 - Brazil (1:00:17)
EA tribute episode to our friend Lewis Liberman to discuss one of his favorite films, Terry Gilliam's noir steampunk, "Brazil". It’s a movie about bureaucracy and totalitarian control with a populace of lobotomized passivity of consumerism. Mistaken identity due to a clerical error leads to government kidnapping and coverup intermixed with heroic dream sequences of saving himself from himself? Perhaps it's all in his head. And remember, information is prosperity. Don't suspect a friend. Report him. There's a “happy” version where he awakes from the nightmare with the woman he thought had died. In the director’s version discussed in this episode, the dream is the happy version in his lobotomized state of sitting in a chair with a grin as he finally escapes the horror of his world. The GoFundMe link for Lewis’s family can be reached at: http://www.actualanarchy.com/lewis Here’s our receipt for your receipt: http://www.actualanarchy.com/116 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. Episode 115 - Les Miserables (1:02:43)
EWe are joined by special guest, Alex Hay, to sing our way through the 2012 musical version of Victor Hugo’s, “Les Miserables”. The film takes place in France during the early 19th century and tells the story of Jean Valjean who, while being hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The story reaches resolution against the background of the June Rebellion. It's a story of redemption for one character, and a relentless pursuit for another. There is love at first sight in the midst of a revolution that will never come. Join us next week as we cover the movie "Brazil" in tribute to our friend, Lewis Liberman. Episode 114 - Starship Troopers (1:10:43)
EA B-movie/war movie that is so over the top that it is actually an anti-war movie. Back when the left was dependably against war. Mike C. joins us again to do his part as we discuss one of his favorite movies. We also discuss how they acquired rights to Heinlein novel for the name and some characters, but is pretty much the opposite of the sentiment of the novel and was already written prior to said acquisition. In fact, the director couldn't even get through the novel. This may be one of the great troll jobs in film history. EWe are joined by Mike C. to discuss the Michael Mann, Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx vehicle, Collateral. This is a tense thriller centered on a cabby with bigger dreams who is holding himself back while waiting for perfection, meanwhile his opposite who improvises with ruthless efficiency in his job as a hitman brings the cabby to a point of self-actualization under extreme pressure in a bid to save his own life and another. Episode 112 - Smallfoot (1:05:12)
EThe noble lie for the greater good. The all-purpose excuse for tyranny the world over. Is it better to live in a blissful ignorance, protected and coddled your entire lives; or is it better to be aware of the dangers and the opportunities available to you so you can make your own choices? We discuss these topics and many more as we are joined by Rocky Ferrenburg for a dissection of the abominable snowman animated feature film flick, Smallfoot. Episode 111 - Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (58:40)
ETime is a construct. Mirrors let you move through time. The government monitors people, they pay people to pretend to be your relatives and they put drugs in your food and they film you. There’s messages in every game. Like Pac-Man. Do you know what the PAC stands for? P-A-C: Program and Control. He's program and control man, it's a metaphor. He thinks he's got free will but really he's trapped in a maze, in a system, all he can do is consume, he's pursued by demons that are probably just in his own head, and even if he does manage to escape by slipping out one side of the maze, what happens? He comes right back in the other side. People think it's a happy game. I've set you free. We will be back next week to talk about Smallfoot with our guest, Rocky Ferrenburg.
