S1 Ep 210Episode 210: Episode 210 - From Russia with Love (1:12:52)

E

We remember the great Sean Connery in one of his iconic roles as James Bond as we review “From Russia with Love” with the boorish, Professional Asshole. From Russia with Love is a 1963 British spy film and the second in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions, as well as Sean Connery's second role as MI6 agent James Bond. A razor-sharp, briskly-paced Cold War thriller that features several electrifying action scenes it establishes many of the James Bond franchise tropes that continue in the series and is parodied in the likes of the Austin Powers series of films. We hope you'll be both shaken, and stirred with this one. Next week we invite returning guest, Jared Wall of Anarcholand and Breaking Liberty back to the show to talk about one of his favorite movies, all the way from India, called "Three Idiots" which will be quite appropriate considering who will be reviewing it. Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/210 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

S1 Ep 209Episode 209: Episode 209 - High-Rise (1:53:58)

E

We're going to record a hot one tonight. Brace yourselves for a tirade or two from Robert on this one as we welcome James Jenneman, the Urban Agorist on to talk about the class-warfare flick from 2015, High-Rise. Tom Hiddleston stars as Dr. Laing, resident in a high-tech skyscraper which places him amongst the upper class. Life seems like paradise. But, as building flaws emerge the social strata begins to crumble and the building descends into a class war. Based on a dystopian novel by J.G. Ballard, it has Shining-vibes. Is it all in his head? Is the "building" haunted? Is the architect the mastermind who is pulling all the strings and realizing that central planning doesn't work? We will discuss all that and more on this one. Be sure to join us next week as we remember the great Sean Connerrey in one of his iconic roles as James Bond as we review “From Russia with Love” with the boorish, Professional Asshole. Ep 208Episode 208: Episode 208 - JFK (1:33:48)

E

It's the return of the great Peter R. Quinones for another round of Costner epics as we review Oliver Stone's, "JFK". JFK is a 1991 American epic political thriller film directed by Oliver Stone. It examines the events leading to the assassination of United States President John F. Kennedy and alleged cover-up through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner). In reference to our review of "They Live", it's like Oliver Stone is fighting with us for over three hours to put on the damn glasses. Garrison is a naive idealist, like Nada, and his attempt to awaken others is net with scorn. This promises to be a pretty deep discussion on the deep state that still has repercussions to this day. Next week, we welcome the Urban Agorist, James Jenneman to discuss the class analysis film, "High-Rise". Episode 207 - They Live (1:13:17)

We're joined by special guest, Robert P. Murphy of the Bob Murphy Show to talk about John Carpenter's "They Live'. He is here to chew bubblegum and talk about They Live, and he’s all out of bubble gum. Fear the Murph! They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live. Horror master John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing) directs this heart-pounding thriller. Aliens are systematically gaining control of the earth by masquerading as humans and lulling the public into submission. Humanity's last chance lies with a lone drifter who stumbles upon a harrowing discovery - a unique pair of sunglasses that reveal the terrifying and deadly truth. Bob did an episode on his show about the movie last year so we will discuss some of his points and give our own take as well. Out of Frame by FEE just released a video on "They Live" as well that we will reference on this one and post on the show notes page. Join us next week for the return of the great Peter R. Quinones for another round of Costner epics as we review Oliver Stone's, "JFK". Episode 206 - The Beast of War (1:33:04)

E

We welcome the great, Kyle Anzalone of the Libertarian Institute on to discuss an under-appreciated and listener-suggested war movie, "The Best of War", just in time for Armistice Day. Our listener, Nick, had the following to say (paraphrased): "...I stumbled across a movie I had never heard of, it completely blew me away and so ever since I've been desperately trying to convince everyone across movie fandom to give it a shot and hopefully drag out of complete obscurity...I kid you not when I say this is the best Hollywood film you've never heard of. Quentin Tarantino's old writing partner Roger Avery has it down as the best movie of 1988 and he also has it down as one of his 20 desert island films with 'Apocalypse now' being the only other war film...if you do see it, let me know if you agree with me that this might be one of the 10 best American movies of the 1980s, one way or another we need to find a way to raise this movie's profile and prevent it from continual obscurity once and for all." Looks like a winner to me and we know Kyle, who was our guest on another war movie a few years ago called "War Machine" will bring a lot to the discussion as he is a machine when it comes to reporting on this topic on his show "Conflicts of Interest" with his co-host Will Porter. And if this wasn't enough goodness, we're going to be having special guest, Robert P. Murphy of the Bob Murphy Show on next week to talk about John Carpenter's "They Live”. Episode 205 - The Purge (1:31:28)

This week we get into the spirit and do a movie that we believe will be appropriate for the aftermath of the election - no matter the victor - as we do “The Purge” with Olof the AnarchoViking. The Purge is an American media franchise centered on a series of dystopian action horror films distributed by Universal Pictures and produced by Blumhouse Productions and Platinum Dunes, mainly created by James DeMonaco. The films present a seemingly normal, crime free America in the near-future. Join us next week for a special Armistice Day episode as we are joined by the great, Kyle Anzalone of the Libertarian Institute and host of Conflicts of Interest to do the listener-suggested and oft-overlooked, “The Beast of War”. Get ready to snap your fingers! The Addams Family, the first family of Halloween, is back on the big screen in the first animated comedy about the kookiest family on the block. Funny, outlandish, and utterly iconic, the Addams Family redefines what it means to be a good neighbor. E

We are joined once again by the great Peter R. Quiñones of the Free Man Beyond the Wall Podcast back to the familiar waters of Kevin Costner flicks as we will review "The Postman" tonight. Years after a major global conflict has left the United States in dystopian disarray, a nomadic traveler who becomes known as the Postman (Kevin Costner) wanders through towns in the Northwest, delivering old mail. Thanks to the Postman's presence, people begin to believe that the U.S. government has been restored. During his travels, the Postman becomes involved with the lovely Abby (Olivia Williams) and clashes with the dictatorial Gen. Bethlehem (Will Patton). Mellow greetings listeners. We're about to be fined multiple credits for repeated violations of the verbal morality statute as we invite our maniac-friend Snobby Bobby of the Not For Everyone Podcast on to discuss the 90's classic: "Demolition Man" With innocent victims caught in the crossfire in Los Angeles' intensifying war on crime, both cop John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) and violent thug Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) are sentenced to a state of frozen incarceration known as "CryoPrison." When Spartan is finally thawed 36 years later, it's 2032, and Los Angeles is now a pacifist utopia called San Angeles. But with Phoenix again on the loose, Spartan must team up with future cop Lenina (Sandra Bullock) to apprehend the killer. So sit back, enhance your calm as we open the pod to the depths of the wasteland, and explore our joy-joy feelings and try to figure out how to use the three seashells on this one. Episode 200 - The Godfather, Part II (1:19:30)

E

Just when we thought we were out, we get pulled back in to continue our discussion on The Godfather with the great Keith Knight of Don’t Tread on Anyone. Our previous episode on the Godfather only began to scratch the surface of all the many facets and intricacies going on in this epic film series. This time we are going to talk about some of the international scenes such as in Italy and in Cuba, and also go wherever else our guest wants to go. The Godfather is a 1972 American crime film directed by Francis Ford Coppola who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo, based on Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel of the same name. We’ll end with our summary and review and ratings for the movies, which we didn’t have time for on the previous episode. We veer back to a more serious movie as we bring back Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty to discuss Hotel Rwanda. The film chronicles the true story of Paul Rusesabinga (Don Cheadle), a brave hotel manager who risked his life and those of his family to take in more than 1,000 refugees during the 1994 genocide of the Tutsus by Hutu militia. Episode 198 - Gentlemen Broncos (1:22:06)

E

We mount our Battle Stags and take a less serious turn, and move from a movie masterpiece to a movie that’s barely a movie in Gentlemen Broncos which was a suggestion by our guest, Ben “Dirty J” Johnson. A mostly peaceful wildfire, probably from a maskless gender reveal that was conducted without proper social distancing, has de-nadded my co-host rendering him unable to connect to the internet so it is just me and Dirty J on this one. However, we do intend to create some bonus content so we can all hear Robert’s take on this and bask in his hate that I fully expect him to have for this one. We discuss The Godfather Trilogy, a story of succession and a metaphor for capitalism where the distinction between mafia and government becomes blurred. We have the great Keith Knight of Don't' Tread on Anyone join us for a review we can’t refuse. Episode 194 - Full Metal Jacket (1:19:39)

E

What is this Mickey Mouse shit?! We are getting with the program and recording on the duality of man. You know, Jungian shit. We talk about a movie with interesting and stimulating people of an ancient culture...and love you long time tonight. We wanted to be the first show on our block with an analysis of Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”. We bring back Jon Reed who’s been on many times before. He’s got a major malfunction and is a bit of a film scholar and maker, and is an appreciator of fine works such as this one. Stanley Kubrick's take on the Vietnam War follows smart-aleck Private Davis (Matthew Modine), quickly christened "Joker" by his foul-mouthed drill sergeant (R. Lee Ermey), and pudgy Private Lawrence (Vincent D'Onofrio), nicknamed "Gomer Pyle," as they endure the rigors of basic training. Though Pyle takes a frightening detour, Joker graduates to the Marine Corps and is sent to Vietnam as a journalist, covering -- and eventually participating in -- the bloody Battle of Hué. We’re here to talk about “Alita: Battle Angel” that has some interesting questions about sentience and self-ownership among other fun angles. Our guest is Alex who had joined us in the past for the musical rendition of “Les Miserables” and this is a suggestion on his part. Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido, a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens, she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious past. We dive into the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton” that just hit Disney+ with a Hamilton scholar from the Mises Institute, Tho Bishop. The original Broadway production of the award-winning musical that tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, first secretary of the treasury, blending hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway styles, filmed from the Richard Rogers Theater in New York. How did this become a huge, cultural phenomenon and how does it help shape history? When so many get their history from movies and pop culture, what does this "teach" that is inaccurate and if it does, to what end? Is the lens through which it was created now different in these short few years? Join us next week as we welcome the return of Patrick MacFarlane of Liberty Weekly to discuss the Adam Sandler film, “Uncut Gems”. Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/191 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. Episode 189 - Casablanca (1:17:11)

E

We review the Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman classic, “Casablanca” before it gets deplatformed, because if that happens before doing this one, we’ll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of our lives. Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), who owns a nightclub in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid). Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country. Of all the podcasts in all the libertarian sphere in all the world, he walks into ours. Our guest is Pete Quinones AKA Mance Rayder and this is a continuation of a beautiful friendship. Pete has done over 440 episodes of the Free Man Beyond the Wall Podcast and was instrumental in bringing about the new, and very timely documentary, "The Monopoly on Violence" which introduces the state to people in what will be a new way for most, similar to our mission here on this show. Episode 188 - The Patriot (1:29:06)

E

We celebrate what remaining independence we still have as we review "The Patriot" starring Mel Gibson with Snobby Bobby of the Not for Everyone Podcast (another movie review show!). Cross-over! Fireworks! BBQ and Freedom! A widowed farmer, with a brave but brutal military past, decides not to join up when the British arrive in 1776. However, when his son enlists and is later captured by the enemy, the former soldier must abandon his new-found pacifist principles in order to rescue his oldest child, and forms a regiment of Carolina patriots, whose guerrilla tactics prove pivotal to the US war effort. Give us liberty or give us mandates which we will blindly follow...apparently true for 99% of the people who will be celebrating their “independence” this July 4th. Next week, we’re going to get classy, San Diego, with our good friend Pete Quinones AKA Mance Rayder of the Free Man Beyond the Wall Podcast as we a review of the Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman classic, “Casablanca” before it gets deplatformed. Episode 185 - Superman: Red Son (1:28:02)

E

We flip the script with Shaheen to an alternative world where the ship carrying baby Superman lands in the Ukraine in “Superman: Red Son.” Instead of Kansas, the ship carrying baby Superman lands in the Ukraine. Superman is introduced to the world during the 1950s Cold War as a Soviet asset, causing panic in the United States. We will be giving our powers to the state and sacrifice for the greater good. As Supe says in the movie, "we can accomplish anything as long as we stay united by our ideals." This movie is made for us as we have so many talking points to go over. Strap in, this could be a long ride. Episode 183 - American Psycho (1:17:02)

E

Before we return a few videotapes, we discuss "American Psycho" a critique on consumerism and "capitalism" set on Wall Street back in the Reagan-era late 80's. In New York City in 1987, a handsome, young urban professional, Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale), lives a second life as a gruesome serial killer by night. The cast is filled by the detective (Willem Dafoe), the fiance (Reese Witherspoon), the mistress (Samantha Mathis), the coworker (Jared Leto), and the secretary (Chloë Sevigny). This is a biting, wry comedy examining the elements that make a man a monster. Patrick MacFarlane of Liberty Weekly returns to the show to talk about the cult-classic satirical horror that launched the career of one Christian Bale. Episode 182 - Apocalypse Now (1:27:58)

E

We are going to review this movie with extreme prejudice. When this came up as an idea back in February, I didn't mean Apocalypse Right Now. Also, as some of the best centrally-planned plans almost always fall through, so do the occasional individual plans. But fear not, we have a solid Plan B for a guest who has been on with us multiple times and will be sure to delight. Jon Reed returns to the show to talk about the pains taken during the production of this masterpiece and we get into how that helps make it an even better film. We also discuss the ridiculous approach to the war and how Kurtz and Willard both saw the nature of the problem. Episode 181 - The Platform (1:21:40)

E

We descend into a Rawlsian nightmare in our show on The Platform tonight. In the lockdowns, many people may have started on some of the higher floors, but some started lower - the longer this goes on, with the lack of production and the massive supply chain disruptions, the lower we will all get. In the future, prisoners housed in vertical cells watch as inmates in the upper cells are fed while those below starve. Be on the lookout for our episode on Cannabis Heals Me with our prior guest, Rachel Kennerly to talk about The Gentlemen. We are locked into Texas for guests apparently as we, appropriately to a movie featuring cannibalism, we have the great purveyor of the Silence of the Memes, Scott Morrison, AKA Captain A on with us tonight. There's a better than zero chance we'll have Jeff Deist next week for a Memorial Day episode on Apocalypse Now, and if not, we've got a solid plan B - just in case. Episode 179 - Napoleon Dynamite (1:12:19)

E

One of my favorite movies tonight, Napoleon Dynamite. We are joined by a man with some great skills. Bo staff skills. Computer hacking skills. Entrepreneurship skills. It's Miguel Duque of Amagi Entrepreneurs. We will answer the question of if the chickens have large talons in this flippin' sweet episode where we don't forget to put in the crystals. In small-town Preston, Idaho, awkward teen Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder) has trouble fitting in. After his grandmother is injured in an accident, his life is made even worse when his strangely nostalgic uncle, Rico (Jon Gries), shows up to keep an eye on him. With no safe haven at home or at school, Napoleon befriends the new kid, Pedro (Efren Ramirez), a morose Hispanic boy who speaks little English. Together the two launch a campaign to run for class president. Things start getting pretty serious on this episode as we move 8,000 chickens to their new cages for like a dollar an hour. E

We jump ahead a few years with returning guest, Dr. Dennis Foster, and see what more than two years of quarantine might do to a city and a people. 2022, New York City - 40 million people are living on top of each other after the scares of overpopulation and global warming myth become reality. That’s right, we're doing a back-to-back Richard Burton vs. Chuck Heston - battle royale - this time for all the marbles. In a densely overpopulated, starving New York City of the future, NYPD detective Robert Thorn (Charlton Heston) investigates the murder of an executive at rations manufacturer Soylent Corporation. With the help of elderly academic Solomon "Sol" Roth (Edward G. Robinson), Thorn begins to make real progress -- until the governor mysteriously pulls the plug. Obsessed with the mystery, Thorn steps out from behind the badge and launches his own investigation into the murder. Episode 176 - The Robe (1:29:30)

E

We did "The Passion of the Christ" last year telling the story of the Crucifixion, this year is an appropriate continuation of that story as we get some of the periphery and aftermath as we talk about "The Robe" with the Anarcho-Christian. In this biblical epic, a drunk and disillusioned Roman, Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton), wins Jesus' robe in a dice game after the crucifixion. Marcellus has never been a man of faith like his slave, Demetrius (Victor Mature), but when Demetrius escapes with the robe, Marcellus experiences disturbing visions and feels guilty for his actions. Convinced that destroying the robe will cure him, Marcellus sets out to find Demetrius -- and discovers his Christian faith along the way. There's a strong anti-state message against the tyrant Caligula at the end, for which the sentence is death. We're doing a back-to-back Richard Burton vs. Chuck Heston - battle royale as we do "Soylent Green" next week for Earf Day with Dr. Dennis Foster. Episode 174 - Police Story (1:25:30)

E

This is what a Police Story looks like. We get a view of Hong Kong in the 80's back when the police had quaint levels of authority. Sharply contrast that with the jackboot tactics of late that have stifled protest and dissent. We invite Shaine Scalph of HAPA Supremacy / What’s HAPAning to discuss the Jackie Chan action-classic, "Police Story". An honest Hong Kong cop protecting a Triad boss's girlfriend-turned-informer, finds himself framed for the murder of a dirty cop and going on the run. Episode 172 - Edge of Darkness (1:11:44)

E

Just in case there wasn't enough toxic masculinity last week, we are going to up the dose tonight as we discuss the "Edge of Darkness" with the Professional Asshole. When the only daughter of a Boston homicide detective, Thomas Craven (Mel Gibson), is shot on his doorstep, everyone assumes that he was the intended target. Then evidence suggests otherwise, and Craven sets out to find her killer and, in the process, uncovers her secret life, corporate coverups, government collusion, and murder. Mel Gibson plays the same role he often plays as an aggrieved man seeking justice for something done wrong to a family member. The old man's still got it in this one that marks his return to acting after a bit of an unplanned hiatus. We’ll talk about whistle-blowers, trusting the politicians and the false flags on this one - it gets a little spicy, but nothing our audience can't handle. Join us next week, if we're still around, to talk about another virus and the panic that ensued from it when we talk about HIV and AIDS form its early days with returning guest, Jon Reed and his movie selection, "And the Band Played On:. Episode 171 - The Last of the Mohicans (1:00:21)

E

We reach way back into Elizabeth Warren’s family tree to the colonial period in America. After our recent episode tracking the course of disease from Bats in Australia for “Batman” through the pandemic spreading across the land in “Contagion”, now it’s time to break out the Smallpox blankets for Michael Mann’s take on “The Last of the Mohicans”. The last members of a dying Native American tribe, the Mohicans -- Uncas (Eric Schweig), his father Chingachgook (Russell Means), and his adopted half-white brother Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) -- live in peace alongside British colonists. But when the daughters (Madeleine Stowe, Jodhi May) of a British colonel are kidnapped by a traitorous scout, Hawkeye and Uncas must rescue them in the crossfire of a gruesome military conflict of which they wanted no part: the French and Indian War. Just in case that wasn’t enough toxic masculinity for you, we’ll be sure to double-up next week as we bring back the Professional Asshole to discuss the Mel Gibson flick, “Edge of Darkness”. Episode 170 - Contagion (1:22:08)

E

We are joined by Raylene Lightheart and her lesser-half to talk about the movie "Contagion" about a global pandemic that some have mistaken as footage of current events. This should be a healthy discussion on a serious topic that will be both thought-provoking and entertaining. With the COVID-19 Coronavirus seemingly creating a panic worldwide where even Costcos in the US are having trouble keeping up with demand, it's a timely movie to be discussing. There is this weird mix of withholding and downplaying information to what appears to be fear-mongering and the use of the handling of the "crisis" as a bludgeon against the opposing sides in an already testy election cycle. Join us next week as we welcome back to the stage, Mr. Mike C. to discuss yet another Michael Mann film, "The Last of the Mohicans". Episode 169 - Batman (1:21:29)

E

It’s hard to believe it was over 30 years ago that this movie kicked off the comic book movie era once again (and nearly killed it a few sequels later). We are of course talking about Tim’ Burton’s Batman from 1989. We bring back Shaheen, our man from Adelaide for this one as he is our go-to for all things Batman and DCEU. Set the scene: the last time we see Batman and Joker on screen, it's Adam West and Cesar Romero surfing with sharks that Fonzie later jumped over, anti-shark spray in the campy 60's TV show. Then you've got the director of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure making a film starring Mr. Mom as Barman, and of the the great actors of his generation dictating his own shooting schedule complete with top-billing. To say people were concerned would be an understatement. Next week, we come down with something as we bring back Raylene Lightheart and her lesser-half for a discussion of “Contagion”. Episode 168 - Captain Phillips (1:21:24)

E

We're the captains now, with our pal Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty. This is a Valentine's Day episode for us, which we will elaborate on during the show. Everything is going to be OK. In April 2009, the U.S. containership Maersk Alabama sails toward its destination on a day that seems like any other. Suddenly, Somali pirates race toward the vessel, climb aboard and take everyone hostage. The captain of the ship, Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), looks to protect his crew from the hostile invaders, and their leader, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). The pirates are after millions of dollars, and Phillips must use his wits to make sure everyone survives and returns home safely. Join us next week on this same bat-channel, at this same bat-time as we bring back Shaheen to discuss Tim Burton's "Batman" from 1989 starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. We're professional appreciators and don our Cosby sweaters to talk about "High Fidelity" with one of our Top 5 guests, Nicky P. of the recently rebranded Peace Freqs. There's plenty to discuss in this music-inspired movie with a music-minded guest as we review this film, which is unassailably cool. Let's get it on. Episode 164 - Gold (1:11:41)

E

We talk about the Matthew McConaughey movie, "Gold" with Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty. He was our guest recently for the Breaking Bad movie, “El Camino” and he suggested this one while we were doing that episode. “Gold” is an unbelievable story based on true events, and it gets more fantastical at every turn, and even includes helicopter rides. This was a lot of fun to talk about. See you next week as we discuss the Netflix documentary about kratom called “A Leaf of Faith” with John Bush of Brave Botanicals. Episode 162 - The Village (1:06:33)

E

We invite back Rachel Kennerly of "Cannabis Heals Me" to discuss M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village". The movie has the expected twist that has become on of Shyamalan's tropes, however, I think the twist we will have on this will be even better. The premise of the movie will give us plenty of fodder for discussion as we get into instilling fear to maintain control as the benevolent overseers infantilize the populace for their own good, the greater good - or do they? To celebrate the ringing in of the new year, we harken back to the auld rom-com well with a double-dose of both crude humor and witty charm in the holiday classic, "When Harry Met Sally".
