Episode 110 - Death Wish (1:07:42)
ECharles Bronson vs. Bruce Willis (who would win?) The original is one of the classic revenge thrillers that has that satisfying edge of the bad guys getting what’s coming to them. Also shows the incompetence of government to “solve” the problem and how individuals accepting the responsibility for their own safety is a much more effective solution. The remake has a similar air to it, but tones down the social commentary by our hero and focuses more on the cat and mouse with the ridiculous final villain. In both however, the government has a monopoly on police services and has no incentive to actually solve the problem. Their biggest concern is “how it looks”, so they bury statistics that are unfavorable to their perception. Another funny thing was how hard they were hunting the “vigilante” and they had literally dozens of people in the room all working the case - such a huge waste of resources. Come back next week for our episode on Smallfoot with special guest, Rocky Ferrenburg. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. Episode 109 - Ratatouille (1:16:49)
EIt's college bowl season and very nearly the NFL playoffs, so we thought we'd throw you a couple of curve balls. First, Robert is a feeble and sickly old man, so a fine gentleman who has a new, and quite good, podcast has picked up temporary guardianship of the co-hosting duties. He is Dann Reid of the Culinary Libertarian, and you can find his work at http://www.culinarylibertarian.com Which leads us to the second curve ball, and that is the choice of film for discussion will now be a more food-focused fare of the Disney/Pixar, in Brad Bird's Ratatouille. The good news is, Robert will be playing the role of Gusteau's ghost and we already have his take on this movie from back in our Read Rothbard days, and will post that on the show notes page. For those of you wishing for Death Wish, just keep wishing for one more week...and like the genies we are, we shall grant that wish as the first episode of the new year. E[New file uploaded, previous file cut off at 51 minutes for some reason. Try downloading again and it should be the full episode.] Festivus, the airing of grievances, and feats of strength. Twas the night before the night before Christmas...and we're finally recording. The wait has been ginormous, but we promise not boring. Second most Christmas movie ever, after Die Hard of course. Episode 107 - Outlaw King (1:18:29)
EWe welcome Olaf the Anarcho-Viking to discuss a film about the King of the Scots, Robert the Bruce and his struggle for a more local authority against King Edward of England in the new Netflix movie starring Chris Pine Outlaw King. This episode features the work of Hans-Hermann Hoppe, and specifically his book, Democracy the God that Failed, prominently. This is essentially the continuing saga of the struggle of the Scots to be free of foreign rule that could be considered a sequel to Braveheart. Episode 106 - Action Point (106:30)
EWe tackle a listener-suggested movie in Johnny Knoxville's Action Point. As he says, it's a mixed bag, but has some pretty good libertarianish points in it. The whole movie is about a guy fighting regulations, litigiousness, and political correctness culture with an emphatic emphasis on personal responsibility - with stunts - all wrapped around a nothing story with a flimsy plot. This one was a lot of fun. We will back next week discussing the Outlaw King, available now on Netflix. Episode 105 - The Lord of the Rings (1:01:37)
EIt’s December so come in and cozy up by the fires of Mount Doom. We venture into Mordor with the Anarchist Mom to talk about one of her favorites in novel and film lore, the Lord of the Rings. It is one of our favorite movies and it has some interesting themes that when viewed from a Rothbardian perspective, are quite compelling. Though Tolkien was not a fan of allegory, you can clearly see the influence that his ideological beliefs had in his work which has influenced generations in the genre. Meat's back on the menu boys! Episode 103 - American Made (59:50)
EThanks for sticking with us as we are fixin' to unpack a Turducken of an episode in preparation for the Thanksgiving week. This week's show is about the Tom Cruise movie, American Made, where the questions of legality somehow apply differently if you’re doing it for the “good” guys. This international escapade is based on the outrageous, true exploits of a hustler and pilot recruited to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history. Based on an incredible true story of the CIA's biggest secret. Barry Seal is an impetuous and bored pilot who gets leveraged into doing more and more compromising activities for the CIA, the Contras in Nicaragua, and the Medellín Cartel down in Colombia. Once they get their foot in the door, there’s no way out for our hero. Join us next week as we’re gonna wreck it on “Wreck-it Ralph”! Lieutenant John Dunbar, assigned to a remote western Civil War outpost, befriends wolves and Indians, making him an intolerable aberration in the military. Episode 99 - Swingers (1:07:38)
ERobert and I double-down on one of the key movies of our formative years, the Vince Vaughn breakout film, Swingers. This is a fun romp of a movie that tests the boundaries of what could be done today and ended up being a quote-fest a la our Billy Madison or Lebowski episodes. I'm supposed to be impressed because he's wearing a backpack. This episode is so money, and you don’t even know it. Episode 98 - Green Room (1:08:07)
EWe're talking about the punk-rock horror/thriller movie Green Room. It pits an ANTIFA-flavored punk band and a white supremacist audience against in each other in a battle to the death. Sadly, they both share many of the same ideas and horrific understanding of economics and morality. We get deep into some of the weeds here in a fun critique of pacing and real grown-up style reviewing. Enjoys! Episode 97 - Liar Liar (1:07:28)
EPatrick MacFarlane of Liberty Weekly recently became a lawyer and joins us to discuss one of his favorite movies, Liar Liar. Jim Carrey is pretty much a commie these days, but still had a pretty good run of comedy films in the 90’s. This film did not age well, but the premise hinges on how courts often side with the woman at the expense of the man in family court, which gives us plenty to talk about. EWe go back to the Batman well and bring an old friend along as a guest to discuss Batman: Dark Knight Returns. 10 years after retiring, Gotham has descended further and further into crime and chaos as the corrupt police department is failing at the job it prevents others from providing. Batman comes out of retirement to do battle various enemies, both old and new, for the last time. This Frank Miller work was a very strong comic series that was faithfully created as an animated feature with some very deep themes worthy of discussion. Join us as we slice and dice on this one. Episode 95 - The Magnificent Seven (55:52)
EWe explore some cinematic history covering a few iterations of the Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai story that starts out fairly libertarian, but each iteration gets less and less so. We talk a bit about private law, non-state justice systems, the myth of the robber barons and how the west wasn’t actually so wild. We’ve never worked for everything before, but $20 is a lot right now. Plenty to chew on in this episode, so we hope you do enjoy it. Episode 89 - Barefoot Gen (1:06:33)
EBased on a suggestion by a listener and to highlight the recent anniversary of the atom bombs being dropped on Japan, we cover Barefoot Gen and also briefly contrast it with Grave of the Fireflies. Demanding unconditional surrender and using the pretense of invasion as political maneuvering while showing the destructive capacity now wielded to brewing adversaries, an entire generation of innocent civilians are murdered in cold blood with the wrong answer to the philosophical trolley problem. The movies both show the horror of war at home that is then amplified at the dawn of the nuclear age. EAre you not entertained? Is that not why you are here? We get in the Russell Crowe, Oscar-winning epic, Gladiator. The general who became a slave. A slave who became a gladiator. A gladiator who defied an emperor. We’re seriously vexed about the false dichotomy between the two modes of rulership being fought over here. This is a sweeping movie that elicits a fun discussion. Episode 87 - The Hunger Games (59:32)
EWe meander a bit more on this episode than most as we use the film/book series as more of a jumping off point for our rants about conscription and the near limitless thirst for government power. The Hunger Games film series consists of four science fiction dystopian adventure films based on The Hunger Games trilogy of novels, by the American author Suzanne Collins. May the odds forever be in your favor. This movie was suggested by a listener due to the plot turn about the service provider not being sufficiently credentialed, but he's also the only one getting results. His credentials are success. EWe discuss Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri on the show this week. Spoilers in the discussion, like always, but I especially recommend seeing the film before listening to this episode as we get into the minutia of some of the events without a ton of context. Either way, it's a good movie and a great discussion. If you miss this one, it'll be counter-productive to the entire operation. Episode 81 - The Incredibles (1:03:42)
EWe don our super suits one more time as we talk about the Incredibles. This is our Father’s Day foray about the finest Fantasic Four film ever made. Brad Bird directs his first Pixar feature after his disappointing (but still quite good, Iron Giant) starring Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Jason Lee and Samuel L. Jackson. EThe 50th anniversary of the Planet of the Apes is as good a time as any to talk about this Charlton Heston classic that has spawned and respawned numerous sequels and prequels. EThis week we discuss the new HBO film Fahrenheit 451 an adaptation of the Ray Bradbury novel of the same name. Episode 76 - Bee Movie (1:05:35)
ERobert and I get into animal rights, sentience, and “exploitation” while we discuss Bee Movie, 2007 Jerry Seinfeld animated flick. It’s really about some SJW-activist type who gets indignant about a thing, whines to government to fix the "injustice", GETS what he wants; and things fall to shit. Episode 75 – Nacho Libre (1:21:26)
ERobert and I wrestle with cultural appropriation as we attempt to believe in science and pin Nacho Libre. This is a fun discussion on a movie where we have wide disagreement. Berated all his life by those around him, a Friar (Black) follows his dream and dons a mask to moonlight as a 'Luchador' (wrestler). Nacho Libre is a sports comedy film directed by Jared Hess and written by Jared and Jerusha Hess and Mike White. It stars Jack Black, and is loosely based on the story of Fray Tormenta ("Friar Storm", a.k.a. Rev. Sergio Gutiérrez Benítez), a real-life Mexican Catholic priest who had a 23-year career as a masked luchador and competed in order to support the orphanage he directed. Disfruta this episode! EYou boys like Mexico? As the sequel is about to hit theaters, we revist an old classic (that hasn't aged well), Super Troopers. Five Vermont state troopers, avid pranksters with a knack for screwing up, try to save their jobs and out-do the local police department by solving a crime. Super Troopers is a 2001 American crime-comedy film directed by Jay Chandrasekhar, written by and starring the Broken Lizard comedy group (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske). Episode 71 - Hero (1:01:26)
EWe get into "Hero" a mythical retelling of the historical story of the first emperor of China who used military conquest in a bid to unite the country and implement peace. Not to be confused with the Mariah Carey movie of the same name, Hero starring martial arts legend Jet Li in a visually stunning martial arts epic where a fearless warrior rises up to defy an empire and unite a nation! With supernatural skill ... and no fear ... a nameless soldier embarks on a mission of revenge against the fearsome army that massacred his people. It's about the type of people who think they are so smart and can fix everything wrong with the world, if it weren't for the backwards heathens preventing them. This is a fun one. Will Smith stars in this moving tale inspired by the true story about a struggling single father who dreams of a better life for his young son. This was a followup to the cult-classic, sci-fi film noir, Blade Runner where replicants and humans have a rocky coexistence once free will is discovered by the replicant slaves. Episode 64 - I Saw the Devil (52:47)
EIn what may become a routine feature, we do a foreign film from South Korea that has a bit of a cult following in the US, I Saw the Devil. This one is timely as the Olympics are currently taking place there and has plenty on offer. It's a story of revenge where the aggrieved party takes justice into their own hands, and fights fire with fire, becoming the monster he is hunting. Kyung-chul (Choi Min-sik) is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. He has committed infernal serial murders in diabolic ways that one cannot even imagine and his victims range from young women to even children. The police have chased him for a long time, but were unable to catch him. One day, Joo-yeon, daughter of a retired police chief becomes his prey and is found dead in a horrific state. Her fiance Soo-hyun (Lee Byung-hun), a top secret agent, decides to track down the murderer himself. He promises himself that he will do everything in his power to take bloody vengeance against the killer, even if it means that he must become a monster himself to get this monstrous and inhumane killer. We expect to have Patrick MacFarlane of Liberty Weekly on to discuss this film and any other rabbit-trails we go down during the inaugural episode of our new hangout-style/conversation show to be called "Boys Night Out" where all guests and listeners must identify as a man for the duration of the show. Episode 62 - Groundhog Day (47:38)
EWe go back to the Bill Murray well....again. It's Groundhog Day on the Actual Anarchy Podcast. A movie that despite being 25 years old now, holds up very well. Bill Murray is at his wry, wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life. Teamed with a relentlessly cheerful producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart-aleck cameraman (Chris Elliott), TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities.
