WCPEver Episode 320 - Comics Career with Paul Kupperberg and Kirk Chritton
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: Jerry and Cullen are joined in the studio with comic writer-editor-creator Paul Kupperberg and friend of the show Kirk Chritton of ComicsCareer.com. If you grew up reading comics like we have, then you certainly have read a Paul Kupperberg story or two along the way. Closely associated with DC Comics, Paul has also written for Charlton, Marvel, and Archie Comics (And yes, Paul did kill Archie Andrews, so you know he means business!) Kirk has been involved in the comics community for many years, working for Jim Steranko and creating his own comic fanzines in the 1980s and 1990s. Kirk is diving back into the comic industry with the launch of his website, ComicsCareer, and has a Kickstarter coming up soon with some books from both Paul and Kirk being offered. For the show today, Paul and Kirk take a look at what it takes to build a career in comics. It's not just who you know, but how you work and what you can bring to the table. While you are listening, hop over to ComicsCareer.com to sign up for a free digital download featuring interviews with some top comic creators. WCPEver Episode 319 - So You Want to Record a Podcast
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: Cullen and Jerry are joined in the studio with friend-of-the-show Rick Heinichen, whose dulcet tones can be heard every other week on his own podcast, Unpacking the Power of Power Pack. The guys discuss the oft-wondered question of what it takes to start your own podcast. The path you take can vary from person to person, but you're going to encounter a lot of the same decisions each time. We share our experiences in bringing our respective shows to life. (And yes, we are a podcaster short this week, as John needed some time off for a quick summer road trip. Expect to hear John back on the show very soon!) Of course, we have updates on our #My500ComicGoal. We're going to remind you that it's not too late to join in on the fun. Want to get started? Pick up a comic and start reading! Get ready for a fun show, loyal listeners! Because on this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: The Eisner Award winners were announced over the weekend. We give the rundown on the winners as well as some of the other nominees, and how you can give them a read for free. We take a look at the Tom King-Jae Lee ruckus that erupted over the weekend. It actually led to a heated discussion between John and Cullen, while Jerry just sat back and enjoyed the show. Of course, we have updates on our #My500ComicGoal. WCPEver Episode 317 - The Comics That Made Us!
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: First off, we are joined in the studio by friend-of-the-show Brent Kincade, who we have been trying to get on the show for like five years. Brent designed our logos and wrote the lyrics to WCPE in Kansas City. We are delighted to finally get him on the line for a podcast recording. This week, we were inspired to talk about the comics that inspired us. A week or so ago, this was a trending topic in social media, but we wanted to take our time with making our picks. Fair warning, we love to talk about our favorite comics, so this is going to be a long discussion. Make yourself comfortable as we dive into the books that impacted our lives. We take a minute to honor the late Representative John Lewis, a civil rights leader, a long-time Congressman, and the writer of the award-winning March graphic novel series. Of course, we have updated on our #My500ComicGoal, including some recent reads from Brent. We're going to remind you that it's not too late to join in on the fun. Want to get started? Pick up a comic and start reading! As always, we have our Pick 3 selections for new books out today. WCPEver Episode 316 - Hot Reads in the Summertime
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: We are halfway through the year and quickly reaching the dog days of summer. The hot weather in the midwest is encouraging us to find a comfy seat in the shade and read a stack of books. Tune in to find out what has been in our reading queues. TV shows are going batty this summer, as word dropped this past week of a new Batwoman and a new Batman-based TV series for HBO. As always, we have our Pick 3 selections for new books out today. Now hold onto your seats, but John picks a Marvel book while Jerry picks a DC title! What kind of Freaky Friday action are these guys up to? At least Cullen is there to provide an Image pick. Make sure to visit your local comic book store - such as Clint's Comics - but please do wear a mask and gloves. Capes are optional but encouraged. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 315 - Heroes and Villains
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: Following John's read of some old Thunderbolts issues from Marvel, we dive into the concept of Heroes and Villains. So many times in comics, those characters switch sides, with the good guys becoming bad and the bad guys finding redemption. Is there any hero that cannot turn bad? It's a fun discussion as we examine the concept. Or course, we are going to review our recent reads over the last week for the #My500ComicGoal. Jerry stopped in at our favorite comic book store in the whole wide world, Clint's Comics, and came home with a nice stack of new books. Make sure to visit your local comic book store - such as Clint's - but please do wear a mask and gloves. Capes are optional but encouraged. As always, we have our Pick 3 selections for new books out today. Marvel and DC are back to work with some new floppies, so we have our three picks from those two publishers. WCPEver Episode 314 - Inviting Women to the Table
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: We take a look at our recent reads over the last week for the #My500ComicGoal. Lots of great books in our queues, which makes for some fun discussions. We discuss the story of former Batgirl writer Mairghread Scott, who revealed on Twitter this past week that she quit working for DC Comics over their failure to include her in the Bat-summits. This led to a flurry of other creators sharing similar experiences. John has started watching the new season of Doom Patrol, while catching up on Harley Quinn, too. Cullen and John compare the reward programs associated with the Marvel Unlimited app and the DC Universe app. And has anyone EVER redeemed points for a desktop wallpaper? As always, we have our Pick 3 selections for new books out today. Marvel and DC are just pushing collected editions out this week, so we have an eclectic mix of titles from the likes of Image, Dynamite, and Ahoy Comics. Be sure to visit your local comic book store - we would like to suggest our friends at Clint's Comics - but be sure to wear a mask and gloves. Capes are optional but encouraged. WCPEver Episode 313 - #MeToo Time Again For Comics
OK, people, listen up. We have some trouble AGAIN (STILL?) within the comic book industry. Some people have not been playing nice with others like your mothers taught you. And while we're trying to offer some humor with this introduction, this is a serious discussion about people being groomed, targeted, and assaulted, never mind the damage done to everyone's careers. In the last week, we have seen the #MeToo tag resurface in the comic Twitterverse. Male creators have targeted younger female creators, offering up a friendship/mentorship that turns ugly. Our position is that comics do not need this, nor should we accept or tolerate this. We should treat each other as equals with respect. In addition, we offer up our tables at cons as a safe space. Now, besides that, we do have our standard comic talk, with our reads from the last week and our Pick 3 selections for new books out today. Be sure to visit your local comic book store - we would like to suggest our friends at Clint's Comics - but be sure to wear a mask and gloves. Capes are optional but encouraged. WCPEver Episode 312 - Remembering Denny O'Neil
Since we were last together to talk comics, we lost an important part of our comic book community, as the legendary writer/editor Denny O'Neil passed away on Friday. Starting with DC in the late 1960s, Denny quickly made his presence felt on Batman, Wonder Woman, Justice League of America, Superman, and his important run on Green Lantern/Green Arrow with Neal Adams. In the late 1970s, he moved over to Marvel and added his take to the tales of Iron Man and Daredevil. In the mid-1980s, Denny returned to DC to serve as the group editor of the Batman books, which he held for 15 years. During that time, Batman exploded everywhere, with movies, the animated series, and new monthly books on the comic shelves. Most importantly, Denny served as a board member for the Hero Initiative, a cause near and dear to our hearts. We lost a true hero this week, and we spend some time recognizing his contributions to the industry. We have our Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. We also run down a list of free Marvel books this month spotlighting black creators, which are available to read on the Marvel app and on Comixology. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. WCPEver Episode 311 - Amber is the Color of Your Energy
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: Big news last week as DC announced that they were cutting ties with Diamond Comics for distribution of their new product. Of course, we have some opinions on the topic, which is why you have tuned in to this episode. The 2020 Eisner Award nominations were revealed this week. We take a look at some of the more mainstream categories and offer our thoughts on the nominees (and an omission)! We have our Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. Things are slowly working their way back to normal, so you can expect a DC pick from John, a Marvel pick from Jerry, and an Image pick from Cullen. WCPEver Episode 310 - The Wretch with Phil Hester
On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: We sit down with creator Phil Hester to talk about The Wretch Omnibus from our friends at OmahaBound. The omnibus is now available on Comixology, so we thought this would be a good time to visit with Phil about the origins of Glass City's hero. With three decades in the business, Phil is a familiar face for comic fans in the midwest, often seen with his long-time collaborator Ande Parks at cons. Phil is also currently working on Family Tree with Jeff Lemire for Image Comics. Jerry recounts the perils of home-ownership, as a water line break turned his world upside-down over the holiday weekend. We discuss the second episode of Stargirl, which has the guys excited to follow this summer. Plus the return of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has the team traveling to the past to save Hydra! We have our Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. We were a little catty with our picks, as this week sees the release finally of the Catwoman 80th Anniversary Special. On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: Jerry recounts the perils of home-ownership, as a water line break turned his world upside-down over the holiday weekend. We review our selections for Pick 3 for new books being released today. Marvel is back on the schedule, so expect to hear at least one choice from the guys. WCPEver Episode 308 - There's a Stargirl Waiting in the Sky
Last night as news was breaking of one CW star leaving Gotham City, a new shining star took her place on the CW stage of heroes. A new shining Stargirl! Stargirl is based on the 2000 DC series Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., about teenager Courtney Whitmore, who moves with her family to Blue Valley, Nebraska, where she becomes a superhero after finding a cosmic rod in her step-father's garage. Once she overcomes the learning curve for becoming a hero, like managing a secret identity and getting to class on time, Stargirl earns her spot as a valued member of the Justice Society of America. We take a look at the 2000 series, which can be found on the DC Universe app or in a new Stargirl trade paperback available today. Wait, did we just say it's available today? Yes, that's right, the stores are back open as new books resume shipping this week. With the return of new books, we go back to our regular habit of choosing new books each week with our Pick 3 selections. This week we choose between one DC book, one Image book, and one independent book. Can you match up the publisher with the podcaster before you listen? Speaking of new books, as the shipping schedule resumes, it turns out some books will not be returning to bookshelves. DC and Marvel have announced plans to finish up some series as digital-only books. We discuss the pros and cons of the decision. We also have updates on our #My500ComicGoal challenge. Jerry is getting closer to the goalline, but John is speeding ahead towards 1000 books. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. On this week's episode of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!: We look at the career of Amanda Conner for our Pick 3 choice this week. With three decades drawing the funny books for a living, Amanda Conner is at the top of her game with Harley Quinn. But would we get a Harley book signed by Amanda? Tune in to find out! WCPEver Episode 306 - From Ciudad to Extraction with Ande Parks
Listen up, friends. Despite the movie theaters being closed, there is still a #1 movie around the world right now - Extraction on Netflix. And if you pay attention to the credits, you will see that this film is based on the Ciudad graphic novel done by friend-of-the-show Ande Parks. For the long-time listeners, you are well aware of Ande Parks by now. As a fixture in the Kansas City comic book scene and a wearer of hats, Ande joined us back on Episode 37 when Ciudad was first published. In the five years since that recording, Ciudad was optioned, went through a few script revisions and title changes, and debuted at the end of April as Extraction starring one of those Chris guys from the Marvel movies. Ande has a print for sale of Extraction's main character Tyler Rake for sale over at his website. Be sure to pick up one (or two or three...) Also, we turn our attention to creator Neal Adams for our Pick 3 choices. With a career starting in the early 1960s, we have a lot of books to choose from Adams' credit list. WCPEver Episode 305 - Interview with ZLONK! ZOK! ZOWIE! Editor Jim Beard
Atomic batteries to power! Turbines to speed. Roger. Ready to move out. Buckle up your Bat-Safety Belts, WCPE citizens, as we have a treat lined up for you this week. Coming to us from approximately 14 miles outside of Gotham City, we are interviewing editor Jim Beard for his new book, ZLONK! ZOK! ZOWIE! The Subterranean Blue Grotto Guide to Batman '66 - Season One. ZLONK! ZOK! ZOWIE! is an essay collection looking at the episodes from the first season of Batman. Every essay covers the two parts of each week's episode, plus a bonus essay on the first Batman theatrical release. Some familiar names in the collection include Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore, Paul Kupperberg, Chuck Dixon, Dan Greenfield, Chris Franklin, Peter Sanderson, Bob Greenberger, and many more. We discuss with Jim our introductions to the Batman series, bringing this book to life, our favorite Catwoman, and when we might see the season 2 and 3 collections. You can find ZLONK! ZOK! ZOWIE! on Amazon, both as a print edition and a Kindle edition. We focus our attention on creator Bill Sienkiewicz for our Pick 3 choices. In the spirit of the show, we all bring up Bill's cover to Batman #400, but we each have a different book (or poster!) that we would want him to sign. Finally, we check in on our reading progress for the #My500ComicGoal challenge. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 304 - The Return of DC Comics?
On this week's episode of the Worst.Comic. Podcast. EVER! Jerry sat in on a Q&A session with writer/artist Jeff Lemire. This was a fund-raiser for the Hero Initiative, allowing fans to chat with some of their favorite creators. Jerry asked about Jeff's work on The Terrifics at DC, which seemed to mirror the Fantastic Four just a little bit. We focus our attention on creator Walt Simonson for our Pick 3 choices. The man with the dinosaur signature has a long career filled with desirable books to get autographed! How are we going to pick just one book each? DC Comics made a big announcement at the end of last week, making plans to start shipping books by the end of April, albeit with someone other than Diamond. As you can imagine, we had a fun conversation with this topic. Finally, we check in on our reading progress for the #My500ComicGoal challenge. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 303 - Talking Comics with Jim McClain
On this week's episode of the Worst.Comic. Podcast. EVER! We are joined by friend of the show and Solution Squad creator Jim McClain, who sits in with us to discuss all things comic! We focus on creator George Perez for our Pick 3 choices. Man, it is so hard to keep this to just one book from each of us this week. We try to look into the future and imagine what the comic industry in the future - will we still have comic books, and will we still have comic book shops? We also check in on our reading progress for the #My500ComicGoal challenge. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 302 - Family Fun and Games
Welcome back to the Worst.Comic. Podcast. EVER! The great thing about doing this podcast with your friends is that we have something to look forward to each week with our recording sessions. Sometimes, we get the recording done in an hour and we are on our way. And sometimes, we re-do half of the episode because we didn't realize the recording had stopped. Anyway, we hope that our podcast is something that you look forward to each week. Whether you listen to it on Wednesday when it is released, or you wait until later on to give us a listen. We appreciate everyone who takes the time to give our show a try each week. For our Pick 3 choices, which is sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics, we once again are spotlighting a classic comic creator, as we choose one book that we would want that creator to autograph. For this week, we look at writer/artist John Byrne and his legendary career. From X-Men to Fantastic Four to Alpha Flight to Superman to Next Men, there is no one correct answer. Tune in to hear our picks, and get an early start on next week's pick. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 301 - Forging Ahead While Staying At Home
We're back! Not that we weren't going to come back, but the conversation had to be held - what do we do after episode 300? How do we top that or improve on that or even just do another show ever again? But we looked at the news of the week - NO NEW COMICS ON WEDNESDAY - and we rose to the challenge. Can we talk about comics for an hour without any new product? The answer is YES! Of course, with no new comics, we had to do something different with our Pick 3 choices, which is sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. But inspiration struck through an email, and a new concept was developed. Each week until this comic crisis ends, we will take a look at a classic comic creator, and we will each pick one book that we want that creator to autograph. For this first week, we look at writer/artist Frank Miller, and his legendary career. From Wolverine to Daredevil to Batman to Sin City to Martha Washington, there is no one correct answer. Tune in to hear our picks, and get an early start on next week's pick. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 300 - A Podemic of Podcasts LIVE
LIVE from Kansas City and Portland, It's the WORST. COMIC. PODCAST. EVER! Episode 300 show! Seriously, when we started this show back in 2014, the thought that we would do this for at least 300 episodes had not crossed our minds. We'll do it for a little bit until we got bored, or it became too much like work. Along the way, some of you started listening. Then more of you started listening. And we realized this could be our ticket to stardom. (Still waiting on that to finally happen....) So instead of recording this panel live at Planet Comicon in front of friends and family, we opted to record it live over the Internet. We got together, talked about some comics, played a game (see the slides here: Slideshow! ), and then took participants' questions about comics, movies, tv, and the other nerdy things in our lives. We want to thank everyone who has been part of our journey to episode 300, and we hope you stick around for even more fun stuff! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. WCPEver Episode 299 - Social Distancing Since 1982
So, since we were last gathered together, the world as we know it turned upside down and inside out. Planet Comicon this weekend? Nope, scratch that, let's push that out to August 14-16. Kids going back to school next week? Nope, scratch that, let's push that out to August, too. We got a lot of thoughts bouncing around in our heads right now, and we spend most of the time working through them. We would love to hear your thoughts on our various topics, so please write in and let us know. (We would offer for an in-person discussion, but that has been pushed out to August as well.) As a side note, we still have episode 300 coming up next week. We can't get together for a panel, so who wants to join us online for the recording of the episode? Details should be posting shortly. We still do have our Pick 3 choices for books coming out today in shops all over. We do want to remind you that your local comic shops still need your support, so contact your store and find out what their policies are going to be for the next few weeks as we figure out what the new normal looks like. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. WCPEver Episode 298 - PDX Pop Up Con Preview
We are counting down the days when we can see our friends at Planet Comicon in Kansas City, but before that, we have another con to tell you about. With the postponement of Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, originally scheduled for March 12-15, the comic community in the Pacific Northwest was left wondering what to do next? For many creators and vendors, they were counting on ECCC as a source of income. For fans, this was an event that they had been planning on attending for some time. So the brilliant team at PDXComicsArts.com decided to put on a comic convention in Portland, hosted at different comic book stores around the city. Within hours of the ECCC announcement, PDX Pop Up Con was up and running. We sat down with Indigo Kelleigh from PDXComicsArts.com and Katie Proctor with Books With Pictures to discuss what it takes to put together a city-wide con in just one week. While we cover a lot of content on the show, this is a fast-moving con, so please click the link above to get the most up-to-date info for the PDX Pop Up Con. As a reminder, make plans to attend the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel at Planet Comicon on March 20 at 7:30 PM. We will be in 2505A talking comics, playing games, and giving away great prizes. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. WCPEver Episode 297 - Banana Tail Kickstarter with Mark McKenna
Welcome to the Jungle! As in the Checkerboard Jungle! We've got a special show lined up this week, as John and Jerry sit down to talk with comic creator Mark McKenna about his new Kickstarter project, Banana Tail and the Checkerboard Jungle. If you came of age reading comics in the 1980s or 1990s, the odds are extremely high that you read a book that McKenna worked on. Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and many more, if you name a character, it's a safe bet that Mark has multiple credits with said character to his name. In 2003, Mark created Banana Tail, inspired by characters created by his father. Over the last 17 years, Banana Tail has been featured in multiple formats and venues. This week, Mark launched a Kickstarter to help fund the latest adventures of Banana Tail. We think this is a great project and have already supported the Kickstarter, which runs through March 31. Click the link above to review the project, and check out the rewards - specifically the portfolio with Banana Tail prints from the likes of Greg Horn and Walt Simonson. You definitely need more Banana Tail in your life, people! But before we get lost in the jungle, we have our weekly segments, like our Pick 3 choices sponsored by Clint's Comics, and our updated reading list as we work towards our respective #My500ComicGoal. As a reminder, make plans to attend the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel at Planet Comicon on March 20 at 7:30 PM. We will be in 2505A talking comics, playing games, and giving away great prizes. WCPEver Episode 296 - Departure of Dan DiDio from DC
We must say - this was a good week to be in the business of talking comics. Last Wednesday saw the release of Batman #89, which skyrocketed in price before it could even go on sale in some stores. That was followed on Friday by DC letting Dan DIDio go in a surprising but not unexpected move. Just like that, we have a full episode worth of topics to discuss. Throw in our Pick 3 choices for the week, as well as a look at what we have been reading in the last seven days, and call it a show! As a reminder, make plans to attend the Worst. Comic. Podcast. WCPEver Episode 295 - Bad Idea? Terrific!
It was a busy Sunday evening for the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! John and Jerry took in a showing of Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey before heading to the studio to record the show. So we are chockful of opinions and suggestions on the latest entry to the DC Cinematic Universe. We discuss the launch of Bad Idea, a new publishing venture that will put their comics in a limited number of stores to start. These books will not be available on digital or in a collected edition, so you will have to track down the physical comic to read these new stories from some top-notch talent. We debate whether Bad Idea is a bad idea or not. Jerry brought The Terrifics #25, which is a choose-you-own-adventure book done in spectacular fashion. If we were really smart, we would have you fast forward to the 30-minute mark for Jerry's take or go to the 32-minute mark for John's take. We have updates on our #My500ComicGoal from the last week. We round things out this week with our Pick 3 choices for new books coming out TODAY! Finally, start making your plans to attend the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel at Planet Comicon on March 20 at 7:30 PM. More details will be coming in the weeks ahead. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 294 - Wednesday is the New Friday
So we got some bad news and good news for you this week. Let's start with the bad news first - there will be no new WCPE podcast this Friday. We know, we know, we're all creatures of habit, and not having that show on Friday morning is going to leave a gap in our listening schedule going into the weekend. But here is the good news - THE PODCAST IS NOW COMING OUT ON WEDNESDAYS! Seriously, here is it, the first of our new Wednesday releases. Forget about the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!. Instead, think of us as Wednesday. Comic. Podcast. Excellence! It will take a little getting used to the change, but we are sure you will come to embrace the new schedule as much as we have. Be sure to leave us your comments about the new schedule. Now, as for the show this week: Joker has a new girlfriend, or does he? Maybe she is just a new henchwoman? We discuss the news about Punchline joining the DC Universe later this year. We catch up on the end of the CW Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. We discuss parts 4 and 5, along with the guest cameos, and review the new post-Crisis world that the heroes now serve and protect. Have you seen Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn yet? We haven't yet, but we will still go ahead and discuss the move. (And to support a point made during our discussion, on Tuesday the film was renamed as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. That is a much easier title to say fast five times.) We catch up on our reading for our #My500ComicGoal challenge. With our new release schedules, our Pick 3 choices will be for the new comics coming out that day. We already announced on last week's show our picks for today, but we will have new fresh picks beginning next week. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Cullen also got to host panels and meet some new friends on the show floor. What are we reading this year? WCPEver Episode 291 - Talking Star Trek with Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore
While Cullen was getting things ready this week for Wizard World Portland, John and Jerry decided to talk Star Trek. Sure, we could have discussed it ourselves and put out a decent podcast, but what if we talk to some guys who know Star Trek? Like really know the shows and the characters and the merchandising inside and out? So sit back and enjoy our conversation with Kansas City-based authors Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore. Dayton and Kevin have partnered on multiple Star Trek novels over the years, as well as their projects. Whether it's the original series, Next Generation, the Kelvin universe, or Discovery, these two authors have a lot of insight into what keeps Star Trek relevant after more than 50 years in the pop culture world. This just so happens to coincide with the launch of Picard on CBS All Access. With a lot of familiar faces to reconnect with, people are preparing their Earl Grey tea and are commanding their computers to Make It So as they watch the all-new adventures of Jean-Luc Picard. To get a full list of everything Dayton and Kevin have worked on together, check out DaytonWard.com | Stuff I've Written. In addition to the Star Trek discussion, we have our weekly Pick 3 selections, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. All three guys voted to "Make Mine Marvel" for books coming out on January 29. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 290 - Comic Book Resolutions
We find ourselves halfway through January now and assume that the new year's resolutions you made may have fallen by the wayside. Never fear though, for the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! has a new set of resolutions that we can all get behind. Comic Book Resolutions! This list was put together by Peter Rios for his Daily Rios podcast two weeks ago. Peter offered up 10 resolutions for the comic book lover. Some of these are already habits of ours, so we are doing great keeping these resolutions. We even offer up an extra resolution that needs to be practiced each and every day by EVERYONE! In addition to the resolutions, we got to see some new movie trailers this past week for films coming out later this year. We discuss the second Black Widow trailer, plus the first looks at Bloodshot and Morbius. Plus we take a look at a publicity memo for the new Eternals movie. Cullen went to I Like Comics last weekend for the Image Comics partners signing. With a stack of books and cards, you just know that Cullen had to be first in line. And sure enough, he forgot to get one of his books signed. Listen in for the full details. (And be sure to find Cullen next weekend at Wizard World Portland, where he will be setting up at the Hero Initiative table with legendary writer Christopher Priest.) Of course, we have our weekly Pick 3 choices for next Wednesday, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. There are so many good books coming out next week -- how can we ever limit the list to just three? We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. WCPEver Episode 289 - Bleeding Cool Power List
Welcome back to the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! Two Fridays in 2020, two podcasts released. Dang, we finally got this podcast thing figured out. This week, we spend the majority of the show discussing a list published by Bleeding Cool on December 31. You can find that list here. Each year, Bleeding Cool puts together a list of the Top 100 Power List of Comics. This list ranks everyone that is somehow related to comic books, characters, or publishers. We focus on the top 10 on the list, which leads to some great conversation about what is a comic book and the impact of a publisher on a company. Of course, we have our weekly Pick 3 choices for next Wednesday, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. This week, John is hosting, which coincidently lines up with the issue #3 release of his favorite team of teenage super-heroes. Gee, we wonder what it could be... We also bring back for the first time in 2020 the Old Guy Health Segment of our show, which should be sponsored by AARP but isn't -- yet! We know how much our listeners appreciate this segment of the show. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 288 - Geeky New Years Kickoff
Welcome to 2020! The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! guys are back from the Star Wars holiday with a lot of catching up to do. And you get to sit back and take it all in. Obviously, the big discussion is with Star Wars Episode Nine: The Rise of Skywalker. This movie brought to a conclusion the story that has been 42 years in the making. We laughed, we cried, and (because I can finally make a joke that is current again) it was better than Cats. Not only that, but we have the final episode of season one of The Mandalorian to discuss. Killer babysitting droid, sewer escape, darksabers, and so much more which had us on the edge of our seats. Of course, we lead off with our Pick 3 selections for next week, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. We make our choices for new books coming out next Wednesday in local comic shops everywhere, with two #1 issues and the finale of a mini-series. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 287 - A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away...
So what's everyone doing this weekend? Going to see a movie? If we could make a suggestion for you, we think that the Star Wars Episode Nine: The Rise of Skywalker movie opening today might be a big hit. Of course, it's going to be a huge hit. Probably the largest film of 2019, and that's saying a lot considering it only has 11 days to work with to top Avengers: Endgame. We know many of you will be attending a showing (or two or three...) throughout the weekend and the guys of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! will be there too to take it all in. But before we view the new film, we have two episodes of The Mandalorian to discuss. Episode six dropped last Friday and episode seven dropped mid-week, so we have a lot of catching up to do with our new favorite bounty hunter. Sure, some podcasts would just make it all Star Wars talk this week, but not this show! John finished Watchmen on HBO and has a lot to say about one of the top shows on TV. We take a look at the upcoming Disney movies in 2020 to see what interests us in the new year. And we look back at some of our favorite reads from 2019. Now no show would be complete without our Pick 3 selections for next week, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. Books will be in stores on THURSDAY, December 26. It's a light week for new books, and the guys focus on three books from Marvel Comics. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPEver Episode 285 - Crisis on Infinite Topics
Friends, you need to prepare yourself because we have a lot to go over this week. Heck, we could have broken today's topics up over nine or ten episodes, but we're going to get it done in one. Don't believe us? Then sit back and listen in! The DC shows on the CW network kick off their Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover this Sunday night. Will worlds live? Will worlds die? Will [REDACTED] be killed off? Tune in to find out. Did you get to watch the Black Widow trailer this week? Any doubts we might have had about the movie were quickly resolved. The only question left to be answered is when will Red Guardian get his own movie. How about some TV viewing? We all watched the newest episodes of The Mandalorian and Harley Quinn, and John finished up the second season of Titans. Cullen will be attending a signing next week of the Image Comics board, and we all make suggestions of books or cards to get signed at the I Like Comics event on December 10. No show would be complete without our Pick 3 selections for next week, sponsored by our good friends at Clint's Comics. John's pick for next week is a no-brainer, but will Jerry get his pick in? WCPEver Episode 284 - Your First Should Always Be George Perez
Did you get enough food, family & football on your Thanksgiving holiday? Good, because it's time for the turkeys of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! to start talking comics. We have a lot of comics to go over this week. Specifically, the new books coming out in January and February of 2020. We run through the highlights of the major publishers. Also, we look at some of the smaller publishers in the back half of the Previews catalog. As always, we start the show by getting our weekly Pick 3 selections for new books coming out on December 4. Cullen and John attempt to guess Jerry's choice for next week, but his favorite was less than heroic. Tune in to find out more. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 283 - Secret Identities
Have we got a secret to share with you this week! Remember, you heard it here first, from the top-notch investigative reporters of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! Brace yourselves... this will shock your world. We have confirmed that Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent is secretly Superman. In December, DC Comics will be making Superman's secret identity in Superman #18. This is a story that writer Brian Michael Bendis has been working towards for some time, and leads the guys to discuss the concept of secret identities. Secret identities have long been a story trope of most superhero comic book stories. It allows the writer to place the main character in different situations to add to the storylines. Some secret identities work better than others. Sometimes the secret identity of a character is not when they are wearing their costume. We discuss what works or what doesn't work with various characters. While we discuss a lot of characters, we know that we probably overlooked some, so share your favorite examples with us on social media. As always, we start the show by getting our weekly Pick 3 selections for new books coming out on November 27. Make sure to get to your local comic shop on Wednesday ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. WCPEver Episode 282 - The Mandalorian on Disney+
With apologies to old Ben Kenobi, "I feel a great disturbance in the Force. As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in glee, and were suddenly enchanted. I fear something wonderful has happened." So begins the new world order with the rollout of the Disney + streaming service this week. To get things started, one of the first original programmings shows on Disney + is The Mandalorian, which focuses on a bounty hunter (wearing a very familiar armor) in the world following sometime after the conclusion of Return of the Jedi. We have a lot to talk about just with the first episode, so sit back and enjoy a reasonably non-spoiled look at our new favorite show. We also take a look at a lot of the other content available on Disney +. We are going to get our money's worth out of this subscription. We start the show by getting our weekly Pick 3 selections for new books coming out on November 20. John throws Cullen and Jerry a curveball by NOT picking a DC Comics title. Can you guess what his pick might be for next week? Jerry and John went to the Fountain City Mini-Con last weekend, and share the details of the books they came home with from the show. Not to be outdone, Cullen has a stack of new and older books, including a look at the just-released #1 issue of Far Sector from DC. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 281 - Superman Smashes The Klan
So we got so caught up looking at the monsters last month, that we missed out on discussing a very important book that came out last month. Let's make up for that by focusing our new episode on Superman Smashes the Klan #1 from DC Comics. Written by Gene Luen Yang and art by Gurihiru, the book is a cross between the Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 1940s and current anime styles from Japan. The story itself is set in the 1940s, as a Chinese-American family moves to Metropolis, but they do not receive a friendly welcome to the big city. This is the first of a three-issue series, and we consider it a must read for all ages! Unfortunately, we were a podcaster down at the time of the recording. John had family commitments, so he left Cullen and Jerry to run the show. Fortunately, we had already invited friend of the show Jim McClain to sit in with us to discuss this book. Jim is the creator of the wonderful Solution Squad comic that combines super-heroes and math - trust us, we need more of those books in the world! If you haven't read Solution Squad yet, it's available to order on Amazon or through Barnes & Noble. And go revisit WCPEver Episode 253 when we interviewed Jim at length earlier this year. We start the show by getting our weekly Pick 3 selections for new books coming out on November 13. John called in his pick in advance, and Cullen gets to guess Jerry's pick, with the help of a clue or two. We would love to hear your comments on the show. The calendar may say November 1, but we still have monsters to talk about. Specifically, everyone else! From zombies to Swamp Thing to Fing Fang Foom, the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! guys are back for one final week of creature conversation. In addition, we have our Pick 3 selections for books coming out next week at comic shops near you! John and Jerry try to guess Cullen's pick. We name a lot of books that he is buying but his #1 selection remained just out of our guessing range. As a reminder, we will be hanging out with our buddy David Dastmalchian tomorrow at Clint's Comics for his Count Crowley signing event. WCPEver Episode 279 - Creatures of October: The Vampire!
Get out the garlic and the holy water! The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! guys are back with another week of monster talk. This week we are looking at the vampires, but not in a mirror. From Count Dracula to Vamperonica to Morbius and more, we are anxious to bite into this topic, one that will be sure to be a bloody good discussion. And if the only thing we talked about this were were the vampires, it would be a pretty darn good show. But there's more! We have our Pick 3 selections for books coming out next week at comic shops near you! Some interesting choices from each of the guys this week. We will be hanging out with our buddy David Dastmalchian next weekend at Clint's Comics for his Count Crowley signing event. Vince with Technically Drinking stepped up his game this week, so we definitely need all of you to help get us to the finish line in the next week. WCPEver Episode 278 - Count Crowley with David Dastmalchian
People, you cannot get this show started quick enough. This has to be one of our favorite interviews to date, and we've done a lot of them over the last five years. We got to sit down with actor David Dastmalchian to discuss his brand new comic Count Crowley from Dark Horse Comics. If you're not familiar with David's name, you probably recognize his film. From The Dark Knight to Ant-Man/Ant-Man and the Wasp to Blade Runner 2049 to Gotham to The Flash and so many more. He came back home to Kansas City a few years ago to film his own movie, All Creatures Here Below, which also starred Karen Gillan. Heck, he's a former Clint's Kid going back to the days of the Metcalf South location. Next week, David's first comic, Count Crowley, hits shelves, and we can't wait for you to read this book. Along with Lukas Ketner and Lauren Affe, David has created a spooky horror book that is perfect for the Halloween season. TV news reporter Jerri Bartman finds herself at the end of her career and forced to become the horror movie host Count Crowley at the local station. But creatures of the dark come out late at night, and find themselves drawn to the new Count Crowley. To support this new book, David will be traveling the country to bring Count Crowley to a comic book store near you. Mark your calendars now for November 2 if you are in the Kansas City area. David will be at Clint's Comics in Kansas City from 11 AM to 1 PM that day, followed by a visit to Chop's Comics in Lawrence, KS, from 2 to 4 PM. We start the show by getting our weekly Pick 3 selections for new books coming out on October 23. In addition to the obvious choice of Count Crowley, we choose a pair of books from Jason Aaron and a Superman-Naomi team-up. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPEver Episode 277 - Creatures of October: The Werewolf!
Another week in October? Time for more monster talk! Because everyone loves a good theme. For this month, the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! will be looking at the legendary monsters of comic books (as well as movies, television shows and classic novels). For week 2, we look at the troubled individuals who find themselves transforming into a wolf under the light of a full moon. But it's not just limited to the moon. Maybe you were born with a mutant gene, or maybe you do something stupid like drink a magic potion. In the world of comics, there are lots of valid ways to be turned into an animal. Cullen and Jerry both had the chance to see Joker over the opening weekend. This movie has provoked a lot of strong reactions, including from these podcasters. Tune in to hear our thoughts about the latest incarnation of the Clown Prince of Crime! We have more details about our Hero Initiative fundraising competition with the Technically Drinking podcast. If you haven't been following our Facebook feed, we have a lot of great autographed books that we are raffling away. You can't win if you don't donate! Before we get into all of this fun comic talk, we have our weekly Pick 3 choices. We try to guess Cullen's pick for next week, and are able to narrow it down fairly quickly! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email.
