Kickstarters We Love! - Ghost Assassin

bonus

We love comics and we love creators who take their visions and dreams and bring them to life outside of the traditional publishing processes. This week we interviewed Adam Watson to talk about his project, Ghost Assassin, and the ongoing Kickstarter campaign. Ghost Assassin is the tale of a hitman-for-hire who has the ability to see and interact with ghosts. Unfortunately for David the ghosts are the people he's murdered. Adam's journey to bring this book to life has taken some wild turns and his marketing and distribution channel plan is just what the comic industry is needing right now. (hint: What are you reading at the tattoo shop while you get inked?) The art for this project is handled by Joel Cotejar and Charles Carvalho with coloring by Edward Bola and Gulliver Silva. The cover for issue #1 is penciled by Joel Cotejar with coloring by Ceci De La Cruz. Adam will be at I Like Comicon February 10 - 11 with merch and information about the project and the Kickstarter campaign runs through February 21st.

WCPE Episode 183 - Star Wars Eve

It's a Hollywood-focused episode from the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! this week. Not to fear, we do get some comic talk in throughout the show. Now, we record on Wednesday nights, so at the time of this recording, the Disney acquisition of Fox was still just a speculation. Since then, the deal has gone through and we can soon hope to see an Avengers vs. X-Men sometime during Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Anyway, we offer our somewhat-dated thoughts as to what this might mean for the Marvel film franchise. Then we turn our attention over to DC, and the reported shake-up in their film brain trust due to the un-Avengers like performance of Justice League. Next, we do a rundown of some possible gift ideas for the comic-loving geek in your life. Especially if you are that comic-loving geek. It's OK to pick up something for yourself. Or pick up something for your favorite podcasters. Finally, we offer up our expectations for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which has already earned a gajillion dollars since it's release last night. Look for our review of the movie in the upcoming weeks. We may need to see this multiple times to prepare for the review. These tickets are a business expense, right guys? WCPE Episode 182 - Batman Annual 2 Discussion

Welcome back to the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! The longest-running, lowest-rated podcast in our market. On our show this week, we dive into Batman Annual #2 from Tom King, Lee Weeks, and Michael Lark. I think this one all touched us in a special way - but not in a Congressional way. Seriously though, this is a spectacular issue with tremendous art to compliment a comic book love story. Sticking with DC, we discuss the recent promotions for the New Age of DC Comics, a line of books launching in early 2018. What intrigues us is the artistic talent being listed first in the credits ahead of the writers. The guys go over some recent reads, and we take a quick look back at Milestone Comics, which was recently featured on AMC's Secret History of Comics. We also look ahead to the 2018 Planet Comicon, with a guest list that has us very excited to be comic book fans. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Coming to you live... well, nearly live. This is a recording. We were alive and well when we recorded this, and we hope you are alive and well when you are listening to this... Anyway, welcome to the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel from the 2017 Kansas City Comic Con. As you may have heard, Cullen was not able to attend in person. WCPE Episode 179 - Interview with Doug Jones and Con Weekend Wrap-Up

So how was your weekend? Because ours was pretty incredible! John got hugs from Doug Jones, Jerry chatted it up with a not-so-silent Silent Bob, and Cullen found a motherlode of Who's Who issues in a Portland dollar box. In this episode, we chat up all things Kansas City Comic Con and Frankenstein's Comic Swap. We go over our panels, including the incredible WCPE panel which can be found in our podcast feed next week. We talk about the friends we saw throughout the weekend, and the new friends we met along the way. John did do some work along the way, getting out the recorder to talk to Doug Jones, one of the stars of Star Trek: Discovery. Despite some technical glitches, the guys made it work for a quick interview with a truly wonderful person. John presents the guys with a Marvel panel quiz, and Jerry receives an early birthday present from the guys. All in all, it's a pretty darn good show, if we do say so ourselves. First up is the two conventions we will be at. You can find John and Jerry at the Kansas City Comic Con at Bartle Hall. We will be set up at booth 703, as well as hosting a lot of panels throughout the weekend. In particular, join us Sunday at 2 PM CT for the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! panel in the Great Hall. Over the last couple of weeks, the guys of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! have been busy reading comics and watching the fall TV shows. But we haven't talked much about the upcoming movies. So today's episode has the guys looking at the slew of recent trailers for comic-book related films coming out in the next six months. All of these trailers are easily found on your Google machines, so go give them a look if you haven't seen them yet! Thor: Ragnarok Justice League Star Wars: The Last Jedi Black Panther The New Mutants But before we can get to the theaters, we have a con this weekend! Freestate Comicon is this Saturday, October 21, at the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Lawrence, KS. The show runs from 10 AM to 5 PM, and you will find John and Jerry either at their own table at the show, or looking through a 50 cent box of treasured comics that are hoping to go home with us. We also introduce a new feature on the show this week, where we look ahead to next week and spotlight three books that we think you should consider picking up. Now, you may be asking yourself, "Did these guys develop mutant powers that allow them to see into the future?" While we would like to say YES, the real answer is we have subscribed to Clint's Comics weekly mailing list of the upcoming comics for the following week. You can subscribe too! But you have to listen to the show to find out how. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. WCPE Episode 174 - Interview with Dan Brereton

It is so much fun to be able to bring one of our favorite creators onto the show to talk comics or movies or even the Hero Initiative. It's even more fun when we can talk about all three of those things with a favorite creator. Such is the case this week as the guys sit down with Dan Brereton. See, for more than 20 years, Cullen has been a huge fan of Dan's work, going back to his original Nocturnals series. Since then, we have seen his work on Thrillkiller, Legends of the Dark Knight, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and so many more books. Along the way, Dan became a regular contributor the Hero Initiative's 100 Cover projects. Tonight, Dan will be in Portland at a special screening of the 1982 movie John Carpenter's The Thing in 70mm. Following the showing, Dan and other artists will be signing The Thing: Artbook, which features 375 images inspired by the movie. If you can't make the showing, and it is sold out, then you can meet Dan tomorrow at Excalibur Comics in Portland from 12-3 PM. Following our talk with Dan, we take a look at the recent New York Comic Con, which turned out to be a rough weekend for Marvel without it being entirely their fault. We also review some upcoming appearances, including the Free State Comicon (October 21) and the Kansas City Comic Con (November 10-12). We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. WCPE Episode 173 - Interview with Morgan Beem

It's another busy week at the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! Let's cut out the jibber-jabber and get right into the podcast, OK? First up is John's interview with artist Morgan Beem, whose work you will see next week with the release of The Family Trade #1 by Image Comics. The guys got to meet Morgan at Rose City Comic Con last month and fell in love with her artwork. John interviewed Morgan before she took off for New York Comic Con, which is going on right now! Look for The Family Trade on shelves next Wednesday. Next up, John bravely took one for the team and watched Marvel's Inhumans, Gifted, and the first three episodes of Star Trek: Discovery. Listen in to figure out which ones he liked or didn't like, and what he is most likely to keep tuning in for this season. Then all three guys discuss Marvel Legacy #1, which came out last week. This is a giant-size issue kicking off the next big thing from Marvel Comics. We see the first incarnation of the Avengers, from the dawn of humankind. We get teases to Wakanda in space, the Kingpin as Mayor of New York City, and the long overdue return of the Fantastic Four. We run through some of the upcoming titles launching out of Legacy to see which ones intrigue us and which ones we may wait to see in the quarter bins at a future show. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. WCPE Episode 172 - Interview with Jai Nitz

It only took 172 episodes, but we finally -- FINALLY -- got comic book writer Jai Nitz on the line with us to talk comics. Specifically his new comic Fu Jitsu from Aftershock Comics. This book has been in the making for 10 years, going through multiple revisions before arriving at your local comic shop this week. In this book, Fu Jitsu is the world's smartest boy and has been for the last hundred years. Yes, this book is crazy like that. Jai and artist Wesley St. Claire deliver a knockout first issue that impressed all of us in the WCPE studios! But before we can speak to Jai, we get in some comic and TV talk. Shows are returning to the air this week, with premieres already for Gotham, Orville, and Star Trek: Discovery. Which ones are we going to watch, skip, or catch-up on next summer from Netflix? We also recount our visit to the Little Apple Comic Expo last weekend, visiting friends, diving into 50 cent bins, and helping someone track down a book read more than 30 years ago. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. WCPE Episode 171 - A Comic Book Hodge Podge-cast

For the long-time listeners of this podcast (and God bless you for doing so!), you know that we don't always promote what we will be talking about the next week at the time of our podcast recording. The reason we don't do that is pretty obvious - most times we don't know what we will be talking about in seven days. And sometimes, we don't know what we will be talking about seven minutes before we hit RECORD. This is one of those weeks. So we gathered up some various topics that interest us from the last week. None are worthy of a full episode-long discussion, but string enough of them together and we might have a show. Emphasis on might.... On today's episode: John and Jerry attend The Realm book signing at Elite Comics, which was filled with so many of our friends. Meanwhile, Cullen made a visit to our new friends at Comic Cave PDX to drop off a Dave Gibbons-signed edition of Watchmen. Batman Day is coming up tomorrow at finer comic book stores nationwide. But rumor has it that Harley Quinn may be taking over the party this year. We will be set up at the Little Apple Comic Expo on Saturday in Manhattan, KS. We take a quick break during the show to interview Ali and Josh Smith to tell us what to expect at LACE this year. SyFy published a list of the 25 Greatest Comic Book Writers of the last 25 Years. We applaud some of the selections, scratch our heads at some of the others, and make a pretty impressive set of names missing from the list. We wrap things up taking a look at some of our recent reads, including Metal, Superb, and Mister Miracle. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. WCPE Episode 170 - Interview with Dave Gibbons at Rose City Comic Con

The 2017 Rose City Comic Con is in the books, and the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proud to have been right in the middle of it all. Over the weekend, we spent three incredible days working the Hero Initiative booth, managing donation buckets in artist alley, and meeting some of the coolest comic fans in America. Oh yeah, and we also spent some time with creator Dave Gibbons. Yes, that DAVE GIBBONS! We took some time out on Sunday afternoon to sit down with Dave and chat for a few minutes about Watchmen, Superman Annual #11 and his work on the big screen. This comes hours after we hosted his panel at Rose City Comic Con. Don't believe us? Check out our Facebook feed from last Sunday morning! We spend the rest of the episode catching up on Rose City - the people we met, friends we saw, and goodies we purchased. A special thank you goes out to Silk Spectre/Black Cat, who brought us the Brazilian Brownies on Sunday. We would be remiss if we did not mention the passing of writer Len Wein, as the news broke late in the day on Sunday at the con. Len is one of the most influential creators of all time, helping to create the likes of Swamp Thing, Wolverine, the All-New X-Men, and more. He also edited Watchmen with Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It's because of creators like Len and Dave that we proudly donate our time (and money!) to the Hero Initiative, and we encourage you to do that too. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. WCPE Episode 169 - Who Reads The Watchmen

It's the nerd's version of Christmas Eve for the guys from the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! At the time of recording this show, we were just a day away from reuniting for the Rose City Comic Con in Portland, OR. By the time you listen to this, we will be watching the sun come up in the west. You will hear us talk about: Recent reads from floppy issues and collected editions. Our panel with guest Dave Gibbons. Our first encounters with Watchmen. A look at notable comic book releases from 1986. Batman: The Animated Series turns 25 years old this week. Nothing is slowing down the Wonder Woman movie! WCPE Episode 168 - Interview with Jeremy Haun

We are super-excited to have comic creator Jeremy Haun on the show with us this week. Jeremy (along with Seth Peck, Nick Filardi, and Thomas Mauer) is launching a new book for Image Comics later this month. The Realm #1 hits shelves on September 13, but we get Jeremy to reveal all of the secrets from the first issue.... Well, maybe just some of the secrets..... Truth be told, he didn't tell us a lot about it so we will have to buy this book from him Jeremy will be going on a book tour this month to promote The Realm, including stops at Rose City Comic Con in Portland and Elite Comics in Overland Park. Make plans to get one of the secret cover editions from Jeremy at these shows. Speaking of shows, we are one week away from Rose City Comic Con. You can find the WCPE guys volunteering at the Hero Initiative table (#718). Not only will you find us there, you will also find legendary artist Dave Gibbons signing and sketching at the table all weekend. His list of credits is staggering, with Watchmen, Superman Annual #11, Green Lantern Corps, Martha Washington, Kingsmen and more. He even has a panel on Sunday - hope they find some good panel hosts for him! We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. WCPE Episode 167 - Ask Me About My Pants

Another week, another podcast because the guys from the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! love you. Ohhh Yeahhh! The week started out with the various publishers releasing their solicits for November 2017. We scanned the listings and picked out some of the books that intrigued us. As always, if there is an upcoming book that you really want to get, make sure you let your local comic shop know that so they can order one for you. Jerry and John both got the chance to watch the new Defenders series on Netflix over the weekend. We discuss the highlights and the lowlights (i.e., Iron Fist) of the new eight-episode series. We wrap things up with some listener feedback and some quick recaps of what we have been reading lately. WCPE Episode 166 - All I Need is a Mister Miracle

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. We're so glad you could attend. Come inside, come inside... We are back in the recording studios with a big stack of brand new comics to talk about. On top of the pile is the new Mister Miracle book from DC Comics. Creators Tom King and Mitch Gerads (The Sheriff of Babylon) are back giving their spin on a classic Kirby creation. This book is beautiful and amazing and disturbing, sometimes all on the same page. Do yourself a favor and buy this book! We also take a look at the 100 Kirbys project occurring next weekend in Omaha, NE. Brought to you by OmahaBound and Krypton Comics, artist Phil Hester will be drawing 100 Jack Kirby characters as a fundraiser for the Hero Initiative. You can get in on the action beginning on Monday via heroinitiative.org. Jerry discusses finally seeing Valerian and reading the first comic that served as the basis for the movie. John reviews Dept. H from Matt and Sharlene Kindt. Cullen shares his plans for the Great American Eclipse on Monday. We wrap things up with making some recommendations for strong female-led comic stories that do not have a lot of back history, a la Wonder Woman. We would love to hear your comments on the show. WCPE Episode 165 - Bruce McCorkindale Interview and AvX Summer Finale

Another busy week for the guys of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER!, and the schools haven't even started yet! Get comfortable as this is going to be a fun, but busy show. We start out with an interview with writer/artist Bruce McCorkindale, whose brand new version of The Falling Man is now available on Comixology. This is a project that has bounced around over the last two decades, but now it is fully finished in color and available in the digital format. We discuss the history of The Falling Man, working with Phil Hester, and Bruce's cover re-creations. Next, the guys FINALLY wrap up their summer reading program with the final installment of AvX. It took us 77 issues over eight weeks time but we have reached the end. At this point, it's not a matter of who won or who lost, it's that we finished the story. We sprinkle in some discussion of Mark Millar's deal with Netflix and what titles we would like to see developed into TV shows, as well as discuss the new costume identity for Batman's new partner Duke. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or by email. WCPE Episode 164 - #MakeMineMilkshake

While Cullen was slowly melting away in Hot Portland, John and Jerry were chilling with milkshakes in Comfortable Kansas City at our weekly recording of the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! We lead off the show talking about the #MakeMineMilkshakes story from over the weekend. People, apparently some of you need a reminder. You must use Twitter and Facebook and other social media for good things. Don't be a troll. Don't harass people. (Unless it is Nicholas Cage, in which we would like to remind him that the open invite to our podcast is still good.) Next up is a look at two recent reads from John's pile of new books. We start with CalExit from Black Mask Studios, which imagines a world where the major cities in California split from the state following an unpopular election. So ask yourself, is this real or fiction? Next is Dark Days: The Casting from DC Comics, which brings us one step closer to the Metal event this fall. Finally, we reach the penultimate point of our AvX summer reading. Characters die, relationships are damaged, and the story just keeps on going. But we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Or is it the lights of Kauffman Stadium? The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint's Comics. Did you miss us last week? Because we missed you! Hopefully, you enjoyed both episodes last week while we took some much-needed time away from the WCPE Recording Studios. So this week we are back together to talk a lot of AvX comics! We have two weeks worth of reading to catch up on, looking for meanings and messages hidden between the fight scenes. We also take a look at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con. Of course, there was so much that came out of that con that we could spend episodes discussing, so we try to narrow our talk to the items that interested us the most, whether that was movie trailers or comic news. Welcome to our summer of 2017 clips show. Unlike other shows, we are giving you fresh clips vs. recycling old clips from past shows. First up has John visiting the Illustration Academy in Kansas City two weeks ago. After sitting in on some classes, John interviewed artist Vanesa del Rey and concept artist Wesley Burt. Next, Jerry sat down with some comic book artists back at Smallville Comic Con. To start, X-Men: Gold artist Ken Lashley talks about his time in Smallville and the hubbub around his current assignment. Jerry moved across the aisle to speak to artist Kevin Nowlan, who has done a little bit of everything over his 35-year career in comics. Finally, we did speak to some of our friends at Free Comic Book Day back in May at Clint's Comics. John starts by speaking to Mikayla Carson, Miss City of Fountains in the Miss Missouri program. Mikayla is a comic fan as well as an outstanding ambassador for Kansas City. John then speaks to artist Steve Daniels, a KC artist who is also a regular behind the counter at Clint's Comics. You will be able to find us on more platforms, such as Stitcher and Google Play. You can still access us through iTunes, or via our WordPress site. You can even reach us on our Podcast Page, http://worstcomicpodcastever.libsyn.com/. We have brought over the last two years worth of podcasts, and we have plans to bring over the rest of our catalog. If there is something we have missed, please let us know and we will work on getting it added. So besides our Libsyn news, the guys spend some time talking about AvX, the big storyline from five years ago. We do like to stay topical with our show. We also talk about Jerry & John's trip to Omaha for the third O Comic Con. Find us in podcast alley or hosting one of our 10 panels this weekend.
