S3 Ep 12RFT - Rounds For Time - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #53

In our last installment of acronyms and nicknames in the Crossfit world, we are going over RFT. This is "Rounds For Time" and in this case we will use an example. Say you are doing a famous benchmark Crossfit workout called Helen - run 400 meters, 21 kettle bell swings, and do 12 pull-ups. You will do this 3 rounds for time. CrossFit workouts and many other types of workouts will designate how many rounds you will do. The "For Time" part means that you are going to complete that many rounds as fast as you possibly can. You track your finish times and you can see progress in your fitness. If you can do more work in less time then you are fitter by definition. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 113k Pull-ups & Social Distancing - #TRPFitnessChallenge #010

We have lockdowns going on with COVID-19 which leads me today to talk about physical health. I am certainly no expert on infectious disease. I do know that social distancing is a good idea right now and we are taking precautions at the office and in my house to be healthy. Taking precautions is one aspect (washing hands, social distancing) but the other part is staying healthy. In times like these it is easy to forget to be active in staying healthy. I am going to make sure that I get fresh air, sleep well, eat well and workout to most effectively maintain my immune system. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 10Chipper - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #51

In Crossfit and other types of fitness there is often a language associated with each style. Someone new to it is easily confused and sometimes it is a turnoff. Continuing our series on Crossfit nicknames and acronyms, we are now covering "Chipper" workouts. S3 Ep 10How To Take Better Photos Feat. Jason Stemple - HOW 2 TUESDAY #87

As outdoorsmen we are always trying to take photos to remember a special day or a beautiful scene. Most of us are pretty disappointed in the result. The photos just don't look like we remember the scene to be, the fish looks small, the sunset isn't as colorful as it was and the subject has their eyes closed. Professional photographers pay attention to a few details that make photos instantly better. I was on a shoot with Jason Stemple and asked for his advice on a video I was making. His tips were on point and I realized they were different than the last time I had him on the podcast (listen here). So he joins me again today and next week for a two part series on how to improve your photography. This podcast will help you take better photos no matter what kind of camera you have; iPhone, DSLR or point and shoot. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 9Jordan Jonas - Alone - Season 6 Winner - #0109

Jordan Jonas was a cast member of the History Channel Show, Alone. The show sent a group of survivalists to the Arctic to compete for $500,000 in a last man (or woman) standing competition. Jordan outlasted everyone by making it 77 days. He killed a Moose with a bow on the show as well as catching many fish. He battled wolverines and the cold to make it to the end. Jordan and I discuss his experience as a Reindeer herder, hopping trains and traveling the country and spending quite a bit of time in Russia. All of these experiences helped him to acquire the skills to win Season 6 of Alone. Check Jordan out on social: @hobojordo Do a survival school with Jordan; "My goal is to impart the necessary skillset, knowledge and confidence to give anyone that goes through the course the best possible chance of thriving in the wilderness, should the need or desire arise." S3 Ep 9How To Can Tuna Feat. Capt. Scott Walker - HOW 2 TUESDAY #86

I had the pleasure of joining Captain Scott Walker of Into the Blue Television show in his kitchen and he walked me through the way that he cans tuna. He does this so that he uses every bit of the Blackfin Tuna that he catches and nothing goes too waste. There are actually no cans involved. He uses Mason Jars and a pressure cooker to preserve the fish without the need for refrigeration for over a year. This is great for Hurricanes or simply to make sure that you use everything you catch. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 8Death By - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #49

Continuing the series about acronyms in fitness we move on to another one. Last week we spoke about EMOM and now we are talking about "Death By." The format for "Death By" workouts is that you will do 1 rep for the first minute, then 2 for the second minute and so on... You continue in this pattern until you can't keep up with the clock. These type of workouts can be applied to any exercise and also offer a way for you to track performance. If you do "Death By" for pull ups and make it to 10 minutes, then the next time you do it you can see if you can beat that and go to 11. You can also apply it to pushups or other easier exercises and do 3 per minute so it increases quicker (3, 6, 9...). This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 8Hunter Bland - Accident To Advocate For Water Safety - #0108

Hunter Bland was a college bass fisherman who has recently moved on to become a Bass Fishing Coach. We learned a little about Hunter a few weeks ago when he was on the podcast with the whole Florida Gateway College team but today we dive deep into his personal story. Hunter achieved some notoriety, but not in the most desirable way. He was ejected out of his boat due to a freak accident and he was lucky enough to not get run over by any boats during the start of a Bass Tournament. He was wearing his lifejacket so he made it out ok. Hunter is now using that experience to travel around to speak and educate people on water safety. S3 Ep 7How To Set Your Drag For Saltwater Gamefish Feat. Bouncer Smith - HOW 2 TUESDAY #85

Bouncer Smith is a legendary Sportfishing Captain in Miami, FL. Bouncer gives some excellent advice on setting the drag for all gamefish. Use a hand scale every time. Point the rod directly at the scale and pull back until the drag slips at 20% of the breaking strength of the line. Use the scale to observe how the drag changes as your customers or friends pull on the line and bend the rod Practice so much that you can know exactly how hard the angler is pulling by the bend in the rod simply by looking at the rod or feeling the pull with your eyes closed. Great advice from someone who knows their stuff! This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. After 16 seasons of Saltwater Experience we had our first Cobia show ever. It wasn't that we didn't like fishing for Cobia, or that we didn't know how, but it just never worked out. So after filming this show I thought it would be good to do a How 2 Tuesday on tips for fishing for Cobia.

S3 Ep 610,000 Pushup Challenge - Keeping Track - #TRPFitnessChallenge #006

Don't lose track of how many pushups you have done, download a spreadsheet to document how many you have done and how many you have left by CLICKING HERE. Some people have told me that they have been getting sore from all the pushups and my recommendation would be to try to change up how you are doing the pushup and how man you are doing. Keep your sets light and just do them frequently. After so many pushups with your elbows close, do some with your elbow out. Do some pushups with a narrow hand position and some wide. That will hopefully keep you from getting too sore.

S3 Ep 5Shaw Grigsby - Mentor, Pro Bass Fisherman, Coach, And All Around Great Guy - #0105

This podcast has been a long time coming, as Shaw has been on my list since the inception of this show. He has been an incredible helper and coach in my life. My first television exposure was due to Shaw Grigsby and he really brought me into the industry. After a few years, we decided to launch a show and Shaw was incredibly encouraging and even let us borrow his crew. He really cut the learning curve a lot and I've been forever grateful for that. After so many years Shaw has maintained that same level of teaching and encouragement with me and so many other people. He's truly and all-around great guy, I hope you enjoy this show with my long time friend, Shaw Grigsby. This episode has been brought to you by Waypoint TV. S3 Ep 5Barracuda On The Flats - HOW 2 TUESDAY #81

Todays episode is coming from a Saltwater Experience shoot down here in the Florida Keys. One of the shoots we got to fish with Derek DeYoung and we went Barracuda fishing on the flats. In the wintertime, the barracudas will push up into the shallower water where they can ambush baitfish and make a living up there. For whatever reason, in the winter they really push up into the shallow water and in this situation I love to use a Floater-Diver-Plug.

S3 Ep 4The Burpee - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #45

The burpee is not someone's favorite exercise, and its actually something that most people really don't like to do. If you aren't familiar with the burpee exercise it is when you start on your feet and drop down to do a push up, then move back to your feet and jump up in the air and clap your hands above your head. I really like the burpee because it is something that you can do absolutely anywhere with no equipment. I recently heard that there is a correlation between your ability to get down and stand up and how long you'll live. If you're able to sit down and stand up without using your hands then that is a an indicator to your quality of life and length of life. But I think it is really a good indicator of your joint/muscle health and the burpee is helping those parts of your body as well.

S3 Ep 4Chris Duffin - The Eagle And The Dragon #0104

Todays guest is someone who I've wanted to have on the podcast for some time. I heard him on a podcast a few years ago and he has an incredible story. Growing up homeless and catching rattlesnakes as a kid, going to finding wrestling and turning into an elite power lifter. All the while Chris excelled in his job which turned into a career in the Aerospace world. Chris Duffin is an incredibly intelligent person and has defied a lot of odds to end up where he is today. He recently wrote a book called The Eagle And The Dragon and he dives more into details about how he grew up. We got to talk about his book on this podcast and also we were able to connect because he made a post about which podcast to be on next. A lot of people commented that he should be on this one, so thank you for that! It was amazing to sit down with Chris and get to talk about his life and where he is today.

S3 Ep 4The Packing List - HOW 2 TUESDAY #80

Two is one and one is none. That is to say that when you are packing it is best to pack two (especially if it is something cheap). Because you can't always know what will happen and having a back up will keep you prepared. For something like contact solution or sunglasses, it can really ruin your trip to go without, so why not just pack extra? For this episode I reflect on conversations with outdoor photographer Jason Stemple. Jason and I were talking on a recent shoot when this topic came up about how he packs. He is constantly on the road and he has photography equipment and fishing equipment he needs to be able to pack up quickly and effectively.

S3 Ep 2Anchor Retrieval - HOW 2 TUESDAY #78

Often when I'm filming Into The Blue I am sitting on the anchor and waiting for something to happen. During this time I will talk with people like Jason Stemple and Jake Perry. On the last trip we were talking about different things that we could talk about on the podcast. One of the things that I took with me was eliminating twists in the anchor line. Some people might not experience this because you are using a certain kind of anchor or you are in shallow water. But one of the things that happens when you are offshore is you use an anchor retrieval ball. When you are set up with several hundred feet of anchor line it is very difficult to get right over the top of that anchor and just start pulling. You would just be pulling the anchor from the bottom up to the top and it would be a lot of work. So if you use an anchor retrieval ball, you can use the buoyancy of the ball to pull the anchor up. If you are interested in checking it out you can find one HERE.

S3 Ep 2Bryan Sears - 5 Days Into 20 For 20 - #TRPFitnessChallenge #002

A long-time listener of the Tom Rowland Podcast joins me today to talk about the TRP Fitness Challenge. Bryan Sears is 5 days into 20 for 20 and tells us about his exercises and how he gets them done while being a captain, guide and working for Mass Bay Guides. Bryan is a fisherman up in Massachusetts and also is big into fitness, so he was excited about the challenge and the comradery with the #TRPFitnessChallenge. Bryan’s mom owns a small gym and he has always been around a fitness lifestyle, but he was most excited about doing 20 days straight with no rest. Bryan’s family owns a charter company called Mass Bay Guides and he sometimes goes up into Canada for the Big Tuna which I would love to see one day. If you want to book Bryan or follow him on social you can visit @mbgbryan or @massbayguides. S3 Ep 1Joshua Medcalf - Pound The Stone - #0101

I came across Joshua Medcalf's work after hearing 2x CrossFit Games Champion, Katrin Davidsdottir reference a book called Chop Wood, Carry Water. I put it on the list and then quickly read that one and 2 more. Since reading his books, they have become the most gifted books of the year. I gave them to my children, friends and people I work with. Each of the recipients have as impressed with them as I was. We also had some other interests in common. Joshua recently returned from an Inner Mountain Excursion in Norway to learn more about the Wim Hof Method and much more. Link Joshua's story is quickly summarized below (from his website, www.t2bc.com) T2BC founder Joshua Medcalf gave up scholarships to law school to move across the country to live and serve at a homeless shelter in downtown Los Angeles. After six months of serving at the shelter he moved into the closet of a gym. It was there, 6 years ago, that Train to be Clutch started to take form through the simple mission of love people, serve people, and provide value. He has gone on to be one of the most sought after people in the world of mental conditioning, leadership, and life skills. He created the first mental training apps in the world for basketball, soccer, and golf. He has written four books. He is also one of two people ever to be invited to work with UNC Women's Soccer (22 National Championships) on mental conditioning. Joshua is a straight shooter who is passionate about people and he communicates with a heart posture of love and grace. But he is not afraid to say the hard things that people need to hear, which has made him a valuable consultant and mentor to some of the best in the world. Core Principles : You don't rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training The people at the top of the mountain didn't fall there Authentic vulnerability is the only way to lead In everything you do, operate with a heart posture of gratitude Chop wood, carry water Greatness isn't sexy it is dirty, hard work I hope you enjoy this podcast with one of my favorite authors of the year.

As we discussed that your actions form your habits, it is very important to monitor your habits because that will determine your character. S2 Ep 50Mark The Shark - The Darth Vader Of Sport Fishing - #0100

E

I have followed Mark Quartiano who is better known as Mark The Shark for a couple of years. To say that Mark is controversial is an understatement. Mark seems to relish the role as the bad boy of Sportfishing and referred to himself as the Darth Vader of Sportfishing. This was interesting to me because he also seems to have a lot of kind of contrary opinions and actions to being the badboy. For example, Mark has no problem killing big sharks and posting the pictures on Instagram, however after talking to him for a while I also learned that he has tagged more sharks than anyone in the world. He doesn't just kill sharks for no reason, they are sent to biologists or he takes them to the homeless shelter. I wanted to learn more about what made him tick so I took a chance and sent him a message. To my surprise, he responded right away and we set up the podcast even though he didn't know what a podcast was. When I met him at his iconic office in Miami it was literally jammed with shark jaws, pictures stacked 2 feet high of previous catches were all over his desk. There was so much stuff in his office that it was impossible to take it all in. Mark sat down and talked about anything I wanted to talk about and by the end of the conversation I knew way more about Mark the Shark than before. I understood where he was coming from and I understood his motivations for what he does. We discussed sharks, of course, tournaments, water quality and family as well as many other subjects. We may disagree on a few things but we also agree on probably way more than we disagree. In fact, at the end of the conversation I really liked Mark and respected his work ethic that has him working 450 trips a year…every year. There is no doubt that this will be the most controversial podcast I have ever done, but I am very happy that I get a chance to talk to Mark and was very impressed with his willingness to do this interview and answer any questions I had. S2 Ep 50Permit Fishing 101: Spinning Tackle And Techniques (Part 2 of 3) - HOW 2 TUESDAY #76

There are many ways and methods that we can use to catch permit. In order to be successful in catching permit under all conditions anglers need to have mastered many skills with different types of tackle. I find that a fly rod and a spinning rod will cover most conditions but anglers who enjoy baitcasters can also have success. Spinning Tackle If an angler wants to maximize his chances at permit, the spinning rod is unquestionably the most useful tool available. The spinning rod allows anglers to cast small and large crabs, light artificial lures and jigs and live shrimp in every condition. In the Florida Keys, we experience seasonal changes that require me to alter my spinning tackle to optimize the conditions. For example, winter and spring conditions are often windy; a condition that allows guides to get very close to the fish before they become alarmed. The rough conditions camouflage anglers and boats contrary to the extreme calm. Spinning Rods It is in the windy conditions that I use a 7 foot medium action spinning rod designed for 8-17 pound line or 12-20 pound line to throw crabs that measure 2-3 inches across the carapace. The rod needs to have enough backbone to fight and land a fish over 30 pounds yet have a tip sensitive enough and light enough to be able to present these baits accurately and precisely in the windy conditions. Casting distance is not the most important aspect of the setup at this time of year so I choose a rod that I am comfortable casting and that can whip a large fish easily. As the season wears on into the early summer, I find that the conditions often become calmer or at least we experience more calm days. As a general rule of thumb, the calmer the conditions, the spookier the fish will be, therefore the longer the cast will have to be to have success. In order to cast farther, anglers can simply change a few things in their tackle to easily add 10-50 feet in their cast. A rod that measure 7 1/2 feet and that employs a lighter and more responsive tip will out cast a 7 foot rod with the same line and lure. As the season becomes calmer and the fish become more wary, I go to a 7 1/2 foot medium action rod designed for 6-12 pound line. The extra length and whippy tip will also throw lighter crabs successfully which is often necessary to present the bait to the fish without alarming it. Crabs choice this time of year is often a crab measuring 2-2 1/2 inches across the carapace. The Florida Keys weather in the summer is often dead calm. The ocean can be as calm as a mill pond making sneaking up on permit tough, however summer is also the time when permit are the most available. In order to take advantage of the calm conditions, I go even farther in changing my tackle and move to 8 foot medium light action for 4-8 pound line. These rods will cast an even smaller crab a country mile. I routinely use the smallest crabs I can throw which might measure from 1-2 inches across the carapace. On the smallest crabs, a split shot is often necessary. Fighting a fish on a noodle rod like the one mentioned is much like fighting a fish on a fly rod. If you have never fought a fish on a fly rod, it is very important to keep the bend in the rod at a minimum by avoiding a situation known as “high sticking”. Keeping the tip of the rod pointed directly at the fish creates a slight bend in the rod, resulting in more power and better control over the fish. Pointing the butt of the rod towards the fish results in way too much bend in the rod, lack of control over the fish, very little pressure on the fish and often a broken rod. This podcast is brought to you by Waypoint. Produced by Tom Rowland and Brock Rustand. Audio editing by Brock Rustand.
