When you’re fly fishing on the flats, a powerful and accurate backcast is one of the most important skills to have. In fact, it is nit even an optional skill. The powerful and accurate backcast is a crucial fundamental rather than an advanced tactic. Fish appear in an instant and you have to be ready to make a cast at any angle regardless of which way the wind is blowing. Everyone is ready for the standard forward cast, but if a fish appears at an angle with a right shoulder wind (for a right hand caster) a backcast is crucial. Your guide will be able to put you on a lot more fish if you have these skills as well. Practice makes perfect, so be sure to practice your backcast accuracy and distance in the yard before your next saltwater trip but NEVER TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE TARGET! The Ring Game is an old game that I created to make my kids better anglers from a young age. Young kids will quickly learn to read water, and how to become more accurate at casting while having fun and spending time with you. The idea is that they throw their line out, and wherever it lands, you have to land your lure inside the ripple that they made before it disappears. Eventually they will want to switch, and you can start making the first cast, and they can try to land their lure inside the ripple. This is a fun way to get your kids into the sport and teach them how to control their rod and become excellent casters. I first learned of Capt. Peter Deeks from my friend and mentor Bill Dance. He spoke very highly Peter and that made me take notice. When I am fishing and shooting Saltwater Experience, one of the hardest things to do is eat consistently healthy. When you’re headed out on the water, it’s way too easy to just grab an unhealthy snack or something that you know will fill you up, but isn’t the best for you. In this episode I break down some tricks that I have found to help me stay consistent with my diet, even out on the water. I go over some key foods that I bring on the boat that are available in most grocery stores without being unhealthy. We also go over things to avoid. I typically have been keeping all of my rigging gear in the leaning post of my Yellowfin 24. Yellowfin created some fantastic storage that was previously wasted so I have organized it well with the 3600 Plano boxes. This past week we had a few cold days on the water and it helped me to realize that there may be a better solution. Because the area is in the middle of the boat, it is a comfortable place to sit and it is also the only shade on the boat, it is often where everyone wants to be. Additionally, the lean post gets crowded with jackets, sunscreen, and really anything that needs to be set down. This often blocks me from easily getting to my rigging gear or having to ask a guest to move so that I can get to the fluorocarbon, hooks or other tackle. Plano just came out with the new Edge waterproof boxes. They come in many sizes but the one that is useful in this situation is one that is designed for plastics. It is the same foot print as a 3700 box but it is 7 inches deep. I can store an entire set of Daiwa J-Fluorocarbon, my most used hooks, jigs, terminal tackle and a few lures. I still keep the majority of the tackle in the lean post but I have everything I need in one of these waterproof boxes. I can store this in a forward hatch and easily get to it if the lean post is crowded. At night, I can bring just the box in to work on the rods and get them ready for the next day. These boxes can also be great storage for emergency gear, wallets, keys, phones and other important gear. Check them out here. Barracuda is one of may favorite fish to target, especially in the winter time. I typically use a modified lure that isn’t typically used to catch barracuda in shallow water. As 2020 is coming to a close, many people are starting to think about their resolutions for 2021. Many of these are fitness resolutions, but I am going to run through some principles that you can apply to really any resolution. In this episode, I dig into many of the things that you need to have set up in order to be successful with your resolution. Many times this is going to require a major behavioral change and it isn’t just going to happen without some motivation. I talk about one of my favorite books of all time, Atomic Habits by James Clear. I strongly recommend you give this book a read. You can pick it up here. James talks about how to have success with these behavioral changes in your life. Brady Trautman and Alex Blue of SV Delos fame were part of a team that just released an amazing documentary about their sailing trip around the island of Svalbard. Climbing a rope is a great way to build strength in your grip, arms shoulders back and core. It is an old school tool used by wrestlers, gymnasts, the military and CrossFit to quickly develop strength needed for each activity. Besides building strength, knowing how to climb a rope can save your life in the outdoors. Many people only use their arms when climbing rope, but if you are going for speed, efficiency, or survival, using your legs can make a huge difference. The exercise called the Burpee is the foundation of my fitness. The burpee is really a very simple exercise but it is a difficult exercise that many people do not like. You basically throw yourself on the ground on your chest and do a pushup and get back to your feet and jump off the ground. While it is a simple and effective exercise, not everyone is ready to just start doing full burpees. If you are not ready to throw yourself on the ground, don’t worry, there are ways that you can use progressions to get from not being able to complete a burpee to being comfortable with the full burpee. In this week’s episode, I break down a simple progression of steps that will bring you all the way to a full burpee. Check out these progressions and jump in where you are able. You can take this as fast or as slow as you want. If you are not ready to move on to the next step of this progression, continue the steps that you can complete until you feel strong and confident enough to continue. If you continue to work on the burpee you will eventually be ready to tackle the 100 day burpee challenge that we have done through this podcast. For the past three weeks we have talked about the different steps to your road to fitness. We started with CONSISTENCY, then discussed ACCURACY. Last week we talked about INTENSITY, and this week we are discussing the final step, RECOVERY. This step is crucial to your extended health and ends up leading right back into consistency. If you do not recover correctly and get injured, then you will not be able to be consistent with your workouts. Recovery can mean a number of things, and I suggest you take a look at some resources offered by online coaches. Kelly Starrett is a great resource and has a book on recovery called “Becoming a Supple Lepoard”. Sleep is another crucial step to recovery. Enhancing your sleeping environment (your bedroom) can lead to you being well rested, resulting in better fitness recovery. Matthew Walker has a great book on this called “Why We Sleep”. This week I had the opportunity to sit down with Mike Kimmel, who is more commonly known as The Python Cowboy. Mike is contracted by the state of Florida to help remove many different invasive species including pythons, iguanas, hogs, and many other species. Last week, we discussed how to choose the best landing net for your fishing situation. This week we are talking about the most effective way to use a landing net. A landing net is a great tool to have in your boat to decrease the stress on the fish and safely and efficiently catch and release a fish. If you do not use a net the proper way, it could result in you losing the fish. Too many times I have seen net being used improperly, and the line ends up getting wrapped around the net, resulting in a lost fish. I tell you 3 things that will help land more fish 1. The proper position you should be in while waiting for your shot 2. The position you should NEVER be in and why 3. Last week we talked about ACCURACY, as step 2 of the 4 step process for anyone to get back in shape. So now, after listening to this series, you are: CONSISTENT with your exercise. We discussed how to develop a habit that is easier to do than not to do. We talked about making it fun and including accountability partners. IF YOU HAVE NOT LISTENED TO PART 1 AND 2, PLEASE STOP AND GO BACK With this CONSISTENCY, we added in ACCURACY. This is where you might get a coach or educate yourself on how to do every movement perfectly. This week we will be adding in INTENSITY. Once you have CONSISTENCY AND ACCURACY, you are ready for the next step. If you really want to take your workouts to the next level, INTENSITY is the way to do it. This week I had the chance to sit down with the Legendary George Poveromo. George has been on television for 20 years now, hosting “George Poveromo’s World of Saltwater Fishing” which now airs on The Discovery Channel.George and I have a lot in common from the Television world, and he has some crazy stories. He shared one which was nearly his last. While fishing with Capt Nick Stanzyk, he was pulled in by a swordfish and thought he was going to lose his life.
