Graham Tayloe knows a lot about turkey hunting, and he recently was a part of the grand slam world record time, where his crew killed all 4 species in 45 hours. This consisted of traveling by plane between Alabama, Florida, Kansas, and South Dakota. They only slept for 5 hours during those 45 hours but were able to set the new world record! Graham talks us through the whole experience, and also tells us about a very special turkey that he recently killed on his own down in Alabama, an extremely rare albino. He tells us about it's different calling habits, and how he was able to have success hunting the turkey as the season was coming to a close. This week we are throwing it back to one of our most popular How 2 Tuesdays from 2019: In October of 2015 I came across a documentary that changed how I started my day. Vice did a documentary about a Daredevil named Wim Hof who, through a breathing technique, was able to do amazing things previously believed to be impossible. He ran a marathon barefoot in the Arctic Circle, another marathon in extreme heat, he climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in shorts and even went up Everest in a pair of shorts. He set world records for swims under frozen lakes, he stayed in ice up to his neck longer than anyone to set a World Record. He was also able to influence his autonomic immune system in a laboratory environment to astound the scientific community. What was the most impressive to me, though, was that he claimed that he could teach these methods to anyone and that anyone could do what he has done. Strong claim…but he proved it by takin untrained people right up Kilimanjaro and teaching a group of people to alter their autonomic immune system in a lab just as he had done. I was intrigued, so I tried it and I felt changes immediately. I have started every day with this protocol since. Do not take my word for it. One of the most common excuses that I hear for not working out is that people want to get in better shape before they join a group, gym, trainer, etc. Any good gym is going to have classes and opportunities that cater to any level of fitness. In this episode, we talk about nutrition plans and apps that can help you. I do not recommend any specific nutrition plan, that is between you and a doctor or dietician. But I think that the key to a nutrition plan is consistency. I use an app to help me stay on track. If you do not have a plan ahead of time, then it is way too easy to take a “cheat” meal, and that leads to a downward spiral every time. Breakfast and lunch are the hardest for me, but if I have a plan ahead of time, and have the correct food prepared, it makes it much easier to stay on track. Ed Emory is a veteran guide on the South Fork Of The Snake River in Swan Valley, ID. Ed has solidified his great reputation by winning the Jackson Hole One Fly Tournament as a guide an astonishing 5 times. He is the only person to have done this. Many may know that I started my guide career on the South Fork about the same time that Ed also began his career. We both love this river and want what is best for it. The Idaho Fish And Game has a program intended to protect Yellowstone Cutthroats in the South Fork. To do so, they will electroshock many thousands of rainbow trout out of the river. This will most definitely change the fishing quality on the river. Dr. Lorian Schweikert is a scientist that recently had the opportunity to be part of a research team that studied deep water aquatic life in the Gulf of Mexico. They conducted a ton of research, and the biggest success of their study was capturing for the second time ever, live video of a giant squid. I talk with Lorian about the importance of this, the mystery of giant squid, and about many other species and experiences that were a part of her trip and study. This research was funded by the Ocean Exploration and Research Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As a fishing guide, it is incredibly important to protect myself from the sun. I really don’t like putting on sunscreen every day, and Have been using clothing to protect myself for many years. The first thing you’ll want is a good pair of polarized sunglasses. Along with that, my Buff is a crucial piece of clothing that I never leave home without. You can use that along with a hat to fully cover your face from the sun. Huk just released a new hooded shirt called the Waypoint shirt, and it is made out of recycled water bottles. I use the hood along with my Buff to completely protect my head. Ben Crawford completed the 2000+ mile Appalachian Trail with his wife and 6 kids, ranging in age from 2 to 16. WOW! We discuss why he decided to go on this trip in the first place, the challenges that presented themselves along the way and how it affected his family. Along the way I learned much more about Ben. When you’re fly fishing on the flats, a powerful and accurate backcast is one of the most important skills to have. In fact, it is nit even an optional skill. The powerful and accurate backcast is a crucial fundamental rather than an advanced tactic. Fish appear in an instant and you have to be ready to make a cast at any angle regardless of which way the wind is blowing. Everyone is ready for the standard forward cast, but if a fish appears at an angle with a right shoulder wind (for a right hand caster) a backcast is crucial. Your guide will be able to put you on a lot more fish if you have these skills as well. Practice makes perfect, so be sure to practice your backcast accuracy and distance in the yard before your next saltwater trip but NEVER TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE TARGET! The Ring Game is an old game that I created to make my kids better anglers from a young age. Young kids will quickly learn to read water, and how to become more accurate at casting while having fun and spending time with you. The idea is that they throw their line out, and wherever it lands, you have to land your lure inside the ripple that they made before it disappears. Eventually they will want to switch, and you can start making the first cast, and they can try to land their lure inside the ripple. This is a fun way to get your kids into the sport and teach them how to control their rod and become excellent casters.
