S2 Ep 49Actions - Living Out Your Words - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #40

Thoughts become words which then become your actions. In part 3 of this series we cover how your words determine your work ethic, how you treat others and how you treat yourself. All of your actions are directly impacted by the words that you speak to others and especially by the words you speak to yourself.

S2 Ep 49Capt Brandon Cyr - 4th Generation Conch and Flats Guide in Key West, FL - #0099

Brandon Cyr is a 4th generation Conch. A Conch is someone born in Key West, FL and there are fewer now than ever. Brandon developed the fishing passion at an early age and grew up into one of the best flats guides in Key West. I originally contacted Brandon to discuss his recent trip to Cuba. However, the Cuba trip took a back seat to his recent marriage proposal on his birthday, permit fishing and tagging bonefish. We finally got around to discussing Cuba and he filled me in on an amazing trip.

S2 Ep 49Permit Fishing 101: Seasons And Guides Featuring Captain Nick Labadie (Part 1 of 3) - HOW 2 TUESDAY #75

The Lower Florida Keys are one of the very best places in the world to catch Permit on the flats. In order for Permit to be plentiful, they need the right temperature, food source, vast inshore and offshore habitat and structure such as wrecks, coral heads, and bridges. Best Seasons and Tides In the Florida Keys, the permit fishing is truly year-round. Of course, there are better times than others for permit, but anglers can feel confident that with enough looking, permit can and will be found. My favorite times of the year are Feb, March, June-November. The months of Feb and March coincide with the water temperatures climbing back into the comfort zone of the permit while also being just before the spawning season for permit. This time seems to be when there is a lot of permit on the flats and also when conditions are conducive to catching the fish on the fly. I look for post-cold front days when the sky is completely clear and the temperature is increasing for the best opportunities. The windy conditions that usually accompany this meteorological scenario allow anglers to get close to the permit and require shorter casts. I like the summer and fall the best for finding the largest number of permit both on structure and flats. The calm conditions of the summer and fall will require longer casts with both spin and fly, however, the opportunity at the fish abounds. During both times of the year, I prefer a big high tide in the middle of the day of 1.5 or greater. This allows me to fish virtually wherever I want and lets the permit frequent areas formerly inaccessible. It is important to remember that we have a 4-6 hour tidal difference between the ocean and many areas of the backcountry so many anglers make a big mistake by choosing the time to fish simply based on the tide chart. Each area has its best tide and the discovery of this only comes through many days spent researching these areas. Now that you know the best times to go and how to find a good guide, we will go over the tackle and techniques necessary to catch Permit in my next couple of posts. First we address spinning tackle, bait, line, leaders, casts and strategy before moving onto fly fishing. This podcast is brought to you by Waypoint. Produced by Tom Rowland and Brock Rustand. S2 Ep 48Words - Control Your Tongue - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #39

This is number 2 of a six-part series dealing with your thoughts, words and how it determines your success or failure. To start off we have a couple of quotes, this one is from Chad Wright: “Your tongue is your rutter, it will steer the direction of your life and the outcome of your situations 98% of the time.” Zig Ziglar says: “There is power in words, what you say is what you get.” Pierre du Plessis: “Words create worlds” It is very difficult for us to have complete control over our thoughts. Our thoughts often run wild and sometimes when you are in a difficult situation you have some thoughts that you might fail or you might think you aren’t good enough. Most of the time you can dismiss them, but there is a serious change when you speak that you are going to fail or that you “can’t do it.” Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your character, and your character determines your destiny. There is so much truth to that statement, and after last week we went over thoughts and this week is on words. Although sometimes it is hard to battle thoughts, you do have complete control over your words and you don’t have to say that you can’t do it, or speak that you might fail. Because when you speak your thoughts out loud, you give them power. And just like Zig said, if you say that you will fail, that is what you’ll get. This works negatively or positively. If you chose to speak positive words it can help you continue in difficult situations and help you get through them. It has been really good for me to understand the power of this; when I give negative thoughts power by speaking them aloud, it is very detrimental to anything I am doing. Whereas if I can speak positive words to myself or anyone around me, that can have incredibly beneficial results. You see this play out with athletes like Muhamed Ali would say this often, that he was going to be the champion and that he would be the greatest of all time. Similarly, Connor McGregor also does this, he believes very strongly in mastering his thoughts and his words. Now there are some words that I have tried to avoid saying because they can be so destructive. One of those words is CAN’T. I really try to avoid using that word, because as soon as you say that you can’t do something, it shuts off all possibility to do that thing. “Can’t” is giving up on the possibility of doing exactly the thing you are trying to do. The way so many things get done is through creative thinking and by forcing yourself to look at other options. Other words I really try to avoid are HATE, ALWAYS, IMPOSSIBLE and NEVER. These words have similar effects where they will shut off possibilities, and eventually will put you in a corner where you won’t be able to do anything. You can just about make anything happen, you just have to be creative enough to find a way there. S2 Ep 48Captain Joe Gonzalez - Fishing Miami and Biscayne Bay since 1987 - #0098

Whatever industry you may be in, it is common to hear of the legends. Those people whose name continues to surface in conversations with other customers or competitors. In the inshore fishing business, Capt Joe Gonzales is one of those people. Despite working 150 miles away from one another, I heard Joe's name and stories on the regular. His reputation precedes him as a professional who might actually have some Bonefish DNA mixed in with his. Many have said that Joe knows all the bonefish in Biscayne Bay. This may be true but that is not what makes a great reputation. There is much more to becoming a legendary Captain. Like most of the legends I know, Joe has stayed curious and seeks to learn more about all things fishing in order to continue to improve. I visited Joe in his home in Little Havana, Miami. He was gracious and welcoming and certainly told some great stories. I hope you will enjoy this podcast with Capt Joe Gonzales. If you do, please share this one with a friend. S2 Ep 4810 Cheap Things That Determine Success In Fishing - HOW 2 TUESDAY #74

I was in the boat recently with a couple of my friends, Jason Stemple and Jake Perry and we started talking about little things that make a big difference on fishing trips. So we each put our two-cents in on the things that are the cheapest and that might be the most important. If you could carry a couple of these items instead of just one, it would exponentially increase the enjoyment and productivity of the day. So here is our list of things that we think will make your fishing experience much better. Hook Remover: When fishing for kingfish or barracudas (or anything with teeth) you will need this. Roughly $12 to $14 dollars. You will want an extra one because they don’t float and you might lose it. I prefer the Hook Extractor from Bass Pro Shops. Wire Straightener: Probably the cheapest thing you will have on your boat, but this can be the most important for kingfish, barracuda, sharks or anything with teeth. If you have a leader straightener, $2 it can help you get back out there much faster. AFW Econo Wire Straightener $2.48. You will want an extra one of these for sure because it could easily blow off the boat. An Extra Hat: Just get a hat that is given away or an old hat. You will want an extra in case it flies off your head. Extra Glasses: It is great to have an extra pair for yourself or a friend. Just get some cheap pair for back up. You don’t need something that you would wear all the time, but just a pair to get you through the day. Extra Buff: I will usually vacuum seal my Buff so that it won’t get moldy and will always be ready to go if I need it. A Buff is one of the few things that I will turn the boat around to make sure that I have it ready. Sunscreen: This is something you probably have a lot lying around, so make sure that you have some extra just in case someone starts getting sunburned. Cutting Dikes: In case you get a hook through the thumb (as I did recently, see the video below) you can use this to get rid of the barb on the hook. For tools like this one and the buff (ones that you might need in case of emergency), you can vacuum seal them all together so that they are always fresh and perfect. Small First Aid Kit: In case you get a cut but don’t need stitches, you would want some alcohol and bandaids to just clean up the wound and stop the bleeding. Extra Pair Of Pliers: I always use needle-nose pliers that I can cut with and I can get hooks out with them. I always have an extra pair of those in my bag that goes with me everywhere. The Boat Plug: You would need a couple of extras. I keep an extra boat plug in my truck and a couple of extra ones in my bag and an extra one in the bilge right next to where it would go. At least have one extra if not more than that. This podcast is brought to you by Waypoint. Produced by Tom Rowland and Brock Rustand. Audio editing by Brock Rustand. S2 Ep 47The Bonefish Rig Feat. Captain Joe Gonzalez - HOW 2 TUESDAY #73

Joe walked me through his Bonefish Rig, you can see detail instructions below with links to the knots the Joe is referencing: To start off Joe uses an 8-foot spinning rod - this gives him a little more distance, especially when fishing out of a Marquesa and the bonefish are more aware of Joe’s presence in such a large boat. With the 8-foot rod Joe is able to cast further and into the wind. Joe uses a light rod (light action) and uses a 20-pound-test and will tie it with a Uni Knot or a Clinch Knot. Then Joe will use an offset 2/o with a bait keeper. He will then bite the tail off of the shrimp and will thread the backside of the shrimp. He does it this way because it is aerodynamic, and head heavy, but also because with the head clipped off, there is some scent as well. Watch the video HERE. S2 Ep 46Heath Daughtry - The Florida Skiff Challenge - #0096

Heath Daughtry runs the small boat division at Yellowfin Yachts. He is responsible for 4 boat models from 17-26 feet. His attention to detail has improved the quality of our boats over the years. Heath also started the Skiff Challenge which is a 1300 mile race around the State of Florida which has grown into a fundraiser and awareness generator for the water issues affecting the State of Florida. Today, Captains for Clean Water runs the race and is bringing additional attention to the race and the issues. Last year, Heath won the race with his partner Chase Daniels (Hear that podcast here). However, this year, that team is breaking up and Heath has asked me to be his partner in the race. We announce my participation and discuss preparation for this endurance event. 1300 miles in a skiff is going to be difficult no matter what the weather is and both Heath and I are preparing mentally as well as physically for the race. Past Skiff Challenges have been motivation for Heath to embrace the physical culture and create habits that have led to him losing 40 pounds and being in fantastic shape. I shared a workout with him and his trainer Ray Gardiner at FitCrew in Bradenton before the podcast. S2 Ep 46Down Regulating - HOW 2 TUESDAY #72

In the XPT Breathing Course, we went through a protocol that many people can benefit from. If your mind races as you lay down in bed and it becomes more difficult to go to sleep, this method may help. Inhale for 5 seconds through your nose, exhale for 7 seconds. I was taught that the 7 second exhale is critical. It can be more than 7 seconds but not as beneficial if it is less than 7 seconds. Do this 5-10 times. I like to extend this out to a 7 second inhale and a 14 second exhale. Ill do this for 10 times and fall asleep like a baby.

S2 Ep 45Emergency Breathing - HOW 2 TUESDAY #71

So far on our breath series we have gone over the Wim Hof method and we have covered Box Breathing. But now we are going to talk about what to do in situations where you might be anxious, nervous or overwhelmed. In these situations you are taking short breaths into the top of your chest and you activate the sympathetic nervous system where you are ready for fight or flight. In situations where you will be stressed or anxious you can do the Box Breathing or Wim Hof method to relax yourself so that you can focus. Sometimes the fight-or-flight reaction might be good, but if you are about to fly on a plane, or make a business presentation, then you want to be calm and collected. When feeling anxious or overwhelmed, try this technique to bring you back to a relaxed state. Simply stretch your hand out and with your other index finger simply start at the wrist and trace a line to the top of your thumb as you breathe in through your nose, trace a line back to your wrist as you breathe out. Follow this for all your fingers entirely through your nose. Do this protocol as many times as needed until you are in a relaxed state, your heart rate has dropped and you are feeling calm. This podcast is brought to you by Waypoint. Produced by Tom Rowland and Brock Rustand. Audio editing by Brock Rustand. If you have any questions, email [email protected].

S2 Ep 44Starting To Workout Again After A Long Time - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #35

I got a question recently from a listener asking, "how do you start working out if you haven't worked out in a long time." My biggest concern is what is your reason for working out. That is the most important thing and is what will carry you through the process of getting fit. It is important to have a good "why" when you are getting back into the habit of fitness.

S2 Ep 44Box Breathing - HOW 2 TUESDAY #70

When I went to SealFit Kokoro, a 50 hour camp run by Navy Seals, one of the first things we learned was the technique of Box Breathing. Box Breathing is a technique that calls for breathing in for a specific time, holding for a time, breathing out for a time and then holding for a time. Repeat this 5-10 times. The idea of box breathing is that this protocol allows us to move from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system or from fight or flight to relaxation. It turns out that we learned this technique early because we would find many…many times that we would be placed in chaos and definitely in fight or flight and need to make decisions without emotion and clear headed. The technique is simple. Lets take 5 as the count for all sides of the box. You simply breathe in for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, breathe out for 5 seconds and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat this 5 to 10 times. Try this when feeling anxious or preparing to perform. Maybe even when you are poling up on a big tarpon and your knees are knocking and breath is shallow. Let me know what you think of this technique by emailing me at [email protected] and leave a comment below.

S2 Ep 43Workouts With Zero Equipment - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #34

I know we have talked about the Deck of Cards a lot on this podcast, but I want to give you some variations of the Deck of Cards that you can do. No matter how many times I talk about it I continue to get questions about it, so lets go over it one more time. In an average deck of cards you have for suits (hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs). Face cards in this deck equal 10 and aces equal 11 or 1 if you need to scale it back. So from this point I will assign an exercise to each suit (for example burpees|spades, pushups|clubs, sit-ups|hearts, and squats|diamonds. So if you turn over a 3 of spades, that is 3 burpees, but a Queen of clubs would be 10 pushups. If you are outside you can take advantage of Joker cards or blank cards, designate them to be a running exercise or pull-ups. But often I will do this in a small space (like a hotel room) where I will have to just disregard the Jokers. So now that the Deck of Cards layout is established, let's go over some variations that I really like to mix up the Deck of Cards workout: Spades: Burpees, Clubs: Pushups, Hearts: Sit-ups, and Diamonds: Squats Black Cards: Burpees, Red Cards: Pushups Scale It Down: Face cards = 5, Cut the Deck in Half Spades: Sit-ups, Clubs: Flutter Kicks, Hearts: V-ups, and Diamonds: Supermans Spades: Toes to Bar, Clubs: Knees To Elbow, Hearts: Sit-ups, and Diamonds: V-ups Spades: Single Arm Snatches, Clubs: Single Arm Swings, Hearts: Goblet Squats, and Diamonds: Weighted Lunges The Deck of Cards workout has been my number 1 go-to for traveling workouts. It is phenomenal because it requires no equipment and little thought. It is something that I can squeeze in no matter how busy I am and there is no excuse for me not getting a workout. If you have some variations to this workout, send me some of the exercises that you are doing ([email protected]) and I will try your workouts.

S2 Ep 43The Wim Hof Method - HOW 2 TUESDAY #69

Wim Hof Breathing Method In October of 2015 I came across a documentary that changed how I started my day. Vice did a documentary about a Daredevil named Wim Hof who, through a breathing technique, was able to do amazing things previously believed to be impossible. He ran a marathon barefoot in the Arctic Circle, another marathon in extreme heat, he climbed Mt Kilamanjaro in shorts and even went up Everest in a pair of shorts. He set world records for swims under frozen lakes, he stayed in ice up to his neck longer than anyone to set a World Record. He was also able to influence his autonomic immune system in a laboratory environment to astound the scientific community. What was the most impressive to me, though, was that he claimed that he could teach these methods to anyone and that anyone could do what he has done. Strong claim…but he proved it by takin untrained people right up Kilamanjaro and teaching a group of people to alter their autonomic immune system in a lab just as he had done. I was intrigued, so I tried it and I felt changes immediately. I have started every day with this protocol since. Do not take my word for it. S2 Ep 42Completely Stupid And Utterly Pointless? - PHYSICAL FRIDAY #33

In a recent podcast with David Redding (cofounder of F3 Fitness) we talked about an acronym that David came up with, CSAUP. These are workouts that are Completely Stupid And Utterly Pointless and is something that they put into the F3 workout routine. The definition of a workout that is CSAUP is when you tell someone what you are doing and they say, “I don’t get it…” Despite the name, I do think that there is a purpose for doing workouts like this (like a Tough Mudder) and I think they create a lot of value. While they might be completely stupid, they aren’t utterly pointless. The reason that I choose to put events like this on my schedule is because it stretches you. I believe that you thrive on the edge of your comfort zone. Growth happens when you get to the edge of your comfort zone and keep pushing through. That is why I have events that might seem completely stupid as a normal part of my physical activities.

S2 Ep 42David Redding - DRedd - F3 Culture - #0092

David Redding (DRedd), a lawyer, and his close friend Tim Whitmire cofounded a fitness group called F3 Fitness. Starting back in 2011 the group was located in North Carolina and started off immediately overflowing the capacity. The group quickly split into 3 workout groups and has continued to grow in a similar fashion. DRedd grew up in Connecticut and attended Boston University where he was apart of the ROTC program. After that David moved down south and did 9 years in the army, half infantry and half special forces. After that he attended Wake Forest Law School where he met his wife. F3 is a an incredible network of workouts for men that spans all over the nation. Their mission is to grow to serve small workout groups for men and to cultivate male community and leadership. It had started out in North Carolina in 2011 and quickly grew to more than 26 states and 1,400 workouts a week. The three Fs stand for FITNESS, FELLOWSHIP and FAITH (defined as not one faith system or religion, but a belief in something outside yourself). Ranging from 5-year-olds up to 70-year-olds, the group continues to grow and workout together. Their workouts are free and open to all men. They are held outdoors regardless of the weather and are led by men who participate in the workouts. The leaders rotate and do not require any certification to lead. Their credo: Leave no man behind, but leave no man where you find him. See you on the water,Tom Rowland

S2 Ep 42Tripletail Strategy - HOW 2 TUESDAY #68

Tripletail are a prehistoric looking fish that like to float next to debris or trap balls. There are several ways to fish for them including Flyfishing, live bait and lures. I have found a few other techniques that have caught fish that used to simply leave me frustrated. Join me today to discuss some tactics that might help you convert a shot to a beautiful Tripletail fillet on the plate. The Tripletail don’t seem to be able to see as well as other kinds of fish (like permit) because they have tiny little eyes. Because of that you will need to throw fairly close to the Tripletail. It can swim pretty fast once you hook it, but it doesn’t seem like it can swim fast over a long distance. So you need to be prepared for a short burst, but that is all. You can use shrimp, but I really like using flies. This is because you can make a cast, and if it is not where you want it to be you don’t have to reel it all the way back in and recast. You can pick it up from 40-feet away and put it where you want it. When I first started fishing for Tripletail I thought it was all about the surface, where I could see the fish. This technique is where you throw your fly (or live shrimp) over there and pull it over the fishes face and keep moving it in a slow fashion and he will come over and eat it. But I found that I would sometimes pull it away from the fish (and my jig would begin to sink to the bottom) and I waited and I got a bite. So I found that technique to be very productive, especially if the fish was not following it when we threw it out there. See you on the water,Tom Rowland Check out the show notes: 00:00 -Recently we had an opportunity to take advantage of fishing for Tripletail 00:49 - Personally I don’t encounter this fish very much so this was a unique experience for me 01:20 - The Everglades is where you will see a lot of Tripletail 02:14 - Tripletail is easily one of my favorite fish to eat 03:11 - You can often see Tripletail on the surface and just throw to where you see them 03:36 - Tripletail has a tiny eye, the eye size might indicate how well it can see 05:08 - Tripletail will not swim fast over a long distance like barracuda or mackerel 06:08 - Why I like using flies for fishing for Tripletail 06:39 - Tripletail want to eat, so if you throw the right cast they will come over and eat it 07:15 - Letting the bait drop to the bottom 09:14 - We were able to throw further away by letting jigs fall to the bottom 09:55 - Make sure that the fish is legal, the size regulations have changed, so be aware of that

S2 Ep 36Fishing Lodge Etiquette - HOW 2 TUESDAY #62

One of the most fun things to do as a fisherman or hunter is to go visit new places. We are extremely fortunate to have fishing and hunting lodges all around the world that specialize in virtually every species you may want to pursue. The locations can be spacious 5-star lodges, a backcountry tent camp or tight quarters on a mothership. Either way, there is some etiquette to follow when visiting a lodge to make sure that you and all other visitors have a good time. In this short How2Tuesday, I go over some of the things that can lead to a bad trip for yourself or how your actions could diminish the trip for someone else. It is really pretty simple. I know you are excited to be there and may have just had the best day of fishing or hunting of your life, but when you return to the lodge, don't talk numbers or size. Instead, ask others if they had fun and get to know them. Talk about the experience rather than creating a scorecard. Another guest may have had the best day they ever had as well by catching 5-6 fish. As soon as you start talking about the 50 that you caught, their day doesn't seem so good anymore. Comparison is the thief of joy… stay away from this one. We go over a few other good practices around camp as well. If you like this episode, please share it with a friend. It is easy, just text this link to someone who may enjoy it as well. Also, if you could take just a second and go to iTunes and leave this show a 5-star rating and a review it would go a long way to being able to continue the show and also recruit the best guests. Hope To See You In A Camp! Tom Rowland Check out the show notes: 00:00 - How to behave in a fishing lodge/camp situation 00:50 - You might be in a camp for a couple days or even a week, and around other people 01:43 - No matter what kind of day you have. When you come into camp, you don’t want to talk size or numbers… 02:11 - You can be really excited about your day and have it ruined by someone else sharing their day. 03:13 - You don’t want to create animosity in camp, the best answer is always “we had an amazing day” and avoid specifics 04:56 - Everything will go smoothly if you keep it general For questions, concerns, input, email me at [email protected] For more articles: www.tomrowlandpodcast.com
