Ep 206Resisting the 'Discount Pressure'
PART THREE: Resisting the Discount Pressure Series: Ethical sales delivering healthy margins Guest: Jon Dale from Little Fish Business Coaching We’ve all been guilty of thinking that discounting our products or services is the only way to sell them. Ep 204Why having decent margins is important
Part One - Why having decent margins is important Series: Ethical sales delivering healthy margins Guest: Jon Dale from Little Fish Business Coaching Sales! They can make or break a business. Whether we like sales or not, we are all in the business of sales. All of us are selling something. A product, a service, ourselves to other people and so on. Over the years, I've seen and heard many 'sales experts' teach various sales methods and if I'm honest, the majority of them are cringe-worthy. The landscape of sales has changed significantly with the introduction of things like flat rate selling and upfront pricing, however even with these seemingly more 'transparent' approaches, liberties can be taken. In this series, we dive into three areas of ethical selling with the hope that you'll be able to take what you learn and tweak it to make it your own. If you're interested in sales, you'll want to listen to these. TSS085 - More trust equals more sales - [LINK] Selling like a $30 million company - Part 1 | Part 2 TSS067 - Selling to the right customers - [LINK] TSS065 - Knowing your hourly rate - [LINK] About this podcast, 'Why having decent margins is important' Podcast Highlights: 03:44 - The 'get three quotes' frustration 08:30 - What's taking chunks out of your margins? 12:14 - Know your costs, know your margins 20:16 - A clear avatar will help you cast a clear message 22:02 - Meaningful marketing 25:13 - How and why are you different? In 'Why having decent Margins Is Important', Jon talks to us about the number one issue that leads trade businesses to fail. That being, not understanding costs, expenses and margins. So many companies are simply not charging enough money and it will eventually cripple them. It was interesting to talk about how so many companies think they're doing okay because there's money in the bank, but they haven't yet paid themselves a salary. Why does this happen so much? If I'm honest, I only really started paying myself a regular salary ove the last few years, which coincided with the business taking off. As soon as I started doing that, I realised that I needed to really focus on my numbers and rally start to double down. Ep 203Travelling the World at someone else's expense
Anyone that runs a business has costs. Some more than others, but regardless, they exist. Typically speaking, we pay our bills as we get them. We'll use direct transfer, or we'll pay by credit card knowing that we have 30, 60 or 90 days to pay the balance. What many of us DO NOT do well is use these everyday expenses to our advantage. Most of us are familiar with 'Flyer Points' or 'Reward Points', however it would probably be fair to say that most of us also don't really give them much attention. Occasionally, we'll look at our balance to see if we can score a free trip anywhere, or if we can use our points to upgrade our toaster, but what you'll learn in this podcast is how you can redirect some of your spendings in a SMART way so that we're earning maximum points and using them to achieve our travel goals. Some of the key things that I learned in this podcast include: Choosing your credit card is the LAST step in the process Domestic flights chew your points up Credit card points don't always match reward points 1 for 1 Upgrading using points is not ALWAYS the best option Use different cards for different transactions Never pay more than 2% on a credit card transaction Rewards ONLY work if you never pay interest Here are the podcast highlights. There is so much gold in this podcast, I could have timestamped every sentence, but you get the idea. 00:28 - Mark's question about credit card points 04:03 - Being in control 05:53 - Reward systems only work if you don't pay interest 07:09 - Setting up a direct debit means a ZERO balance every month 11:34 - Credit cards help you create great business relationships 15:30 - Getting 4 to 5 times better value using points 19:22 - Airlines make all their money off suckers that pay full price for business and first class 23:56 - A points framework 27:32 - Upgrading doesn't guarantee your seat, but booking does. 28:45 - American Express vs Visa and Mastercard 30:58 - The best 'points airlines' to fly domestic and international 37:20 - Using the benefits beyond the points 40:00 - bank points are not airline points 42:33 - Steve's 'Points App' Enjoy the podcast and reap the 'rewards'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information. Ep 202Laying the right foundations for your business
Part Three – Laying the right foundations for your business Series: Tax Essentials for Tradies and Contractors Guest: Tab Burkhalter from The Numbers House Accounting is one of those topics that is hard to make sexy, but when you learn new tricks, it can make an incredible difference to both your business and your personal life. When I started my business journey, I never had any advice or counsel from anyone that had a clue about numbers. I had no one in my corner. There were no podcasts, no amazing facebook communities. Even my accountant at the time was an absolute punish to get information out of. In this series, Tab dives into three essential areas that tradies and contractors need to focus on. Three areas that I wish I had better understood when I started out. Three areas that we could probably all improve on. My advice to everyone, especially those starting out in business, is to learn numbers and understand your finance. You don’t need to be an accountant to keep yourself on track and out of danger. Understanding Intellectual Property Law’. The topic of IP Law can be quite a confusing subject. There are so many rabbit warrens that we can be led down in the space of IP (or Intellectual Property) legalities, so I set out in this podcast to dispel some of the myths and to bring some relatable clarity to some of the common areas. Those areas being; patents, trademarks and copyright. My guest on the podcast is IP Law expert, Anthony Verna from Vrna Law. Anthony did a great job of breaking down different areas of IP Law and making them apply to a trade/construction business. IP protection is a big deal and there are things that we can do, to make sure that our businesses and our assets are safe and protected. During this podcast, I learned the following: Patents are there to protect ideas and inventions Trademarks protect brands as an asset Copyright protects logos, slogans, colours and even shapes. It was a really interesting conversation. One that I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from and one that I hope will one day protect you from getting into trouble.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
