Episode 137: The Secret Struggle: Mental Health And Private School Leadership
In July of 2021, the summer Olympics were taking place in Tokyo, one year after being cancelled by the COVID-19 pandemic. You may remember that Simone Biles withdrew from the gymnastics competition citing mental health issues, especially anxiety. Her openness about her mental health struggles brought a lot of media attention and other athletes and entertainers felt more comfortable talking about their mental health issues. From Michael Phelps to Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande, more and more celebrities were speaking up and trying to reduce the stigma attached to discussing mental health challenges. Unfortunately, many private school leaders are engaged in a secret struggle. On the outside, many of us look like confident, resilient, strong, courageous superheroes who can handle anything. While on the inside many of us battle anxiety, depression, panic attacks or other issues. I can only speak for myself. When I was struggling, I earned my Academy Award every day. I couldn’t let my people see any chinks in my armor. I had to be Superman on the outside and there was NO WAY that I was going to talk about this with anyone other than my wife. This might be an uncomfortable topic, but on today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss The Secret Struggle: Mental Health And Private School Leadership. I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 135: Do 1 Of These 4 Things This Summer To Have A Better 25/26 School Year
One of the most famous opening lines in classic literature is, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Do you remember the book? If you guessed A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, then you were probably paying attention during your Middle School Language Arts class. As you read this, your school year is winding down and your summer plans are on the near horizon. Summer can be the best of times and the worst of times to get things done and get “caught up” as a private school leader. It can be the best of times because you have less interruptions, more time to think and more time to proactively get things done. Summer can also be the worst of times to work on things that we should do, because you are exhausted and you need to rest your brain and your body to be in good shape to do it all over again in a few months. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to try to persuade you to Do 1 Of These 4 Things This Summer To Have A Better 25/26 School Year. Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. You are making a difference in the lives of the students, teachers and parents at your school. I know that what you do is difficult, exhausting and lonely. Your hard work inspires me to keep making weekly content to try to encourage and inspire you as you serve your school. Episode 134: "‘My Child Is Not the Problem’: How To Handle Defensive Parenting
“My son doesn’t lie.” “My daughter would never do that.” “My child has gotten straight A’s since Kindergarten, so if he got a C it is clearly a problem with the teacher.” “He’s only acting this way because he is bored.” It is so frustrating when a parent gets out their “blamethrower” and blames the teacher, the test, the principal, the classmates, and says that the rules in the handbook are too strict. We can throw up our hands and say “Oh Well!” Or we can learn more about defensive parenting and what to do about it. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss what to do when a parent says, "My Child Is Not the Problem”: How To Handle Defensive Parenting. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 133: Do These 4 Things Before Your Body "Pulls The Emergency Brake"
Whenever the word “emergency” is in the title of something, you probably hope that you don’t ever need to use it. Emergency Room. Emergency Exit. Emergency Fund. Emergency Brake. I hope that you have never had to pull the emergency brake while driving because that means you’ve tried everything else to stop your car. Your emergency brake is always your last resort. Your body also has an “emergency brake”. It will stop you when you are going too fast for too long. When your body pulls the emergency brake it usually looks and feels like ulcers, migraine headaches, stroke-like symptoms, vertigo, insomnia, burnout, panic attacks or an irregular heartbeat. You have a very demanding and very stressful job. Your fight or flight response will flood your brain and body with cortisol and adrenaline for weeks, months or years at a time. Your body will handle all of this stress and all of these hormones. Until one day, all of a sudden, it doesn’t. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to learn how to Do These 4 Things Before Your Body "Pulls The Emergency Brake". Episode 131: Leading Your School While Caring For Aging Parents
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average age of a Head of School in America is 52 years old. That means a lot of private school leaders have parents in their 70’s and 80’s. My mom was 86 when she passed in 2013. My dad was 92 when he passed in 2021. Both of my parents needed a lot of care in the years before they passed and my siblings and I carried a complex mix of stress, guilt and anxiety. We also tried to navigate the often confusing and exhausting list of doctor’s appointments, mobility issues and end-of-life decisions, all while holding down full time jobs. 34 million adults in the US are providing unpaid care to an adult over age 50. 10 million of those caregivers are over age 50 themselves. You have a very difficult job. Leading a school while caring for aging parents can quickly go from feeling very difficult to feeling impossible. Episode 130: The 5 Keys To Making Sure That The Parents Don't Steal Your Joy
During the early 1990’s, I coached boys varsity basketball at the school that I led. At the time, we didn’t have a full-size Gym on campus, so we rented a Gym that was a 15 minute drive from our school. One Friday night, after the last game, we were all filing out of the Gym and I noticed one of the referees standing on the sidewalk and he looked really upset. I said, “Is everything OK?” The referee replied, “Someone stole my car during the game.” I don’t know if you’ve ever had your car stolen, but I am sure that it feels pretty awful. I do know that you have had something else stolen. Your joy. I also know who committed the robbery. The parents at your school. We’ve all been there. We are at a wonderful event, enjoying the kids, enjoying the refreshments, having a nice time and then, BOOM! A parent walks up to you and says, “You need a better sound system. I couldn’t even hear my daughter singing. Also, the coffee is terrible.” Joy officially stolen… On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss The 5 Keys To Making Sure That The Parents Don't Steal Your Joy. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 129: Does Your Spouse/Partner/Best Friend Have "Listening Fatigue?”
For 33 years, I did the same thing almost every day. I came home from school and immediately started venting to my wife about my day as a private school leader. I am ashamed to say, it wasn’t until after I retired, that I stopped to think about how doing that every day made my wife feel. All those years of me venting and complaining and all those years of her listening and trying to make me feel better. Recently, I asked my wife, “What impact did all of that have on you?” Here’s what she said” “Most of the time, it was really hard.” “Usually, I absorbed your stress.” “I was frustrated because I couldn’t fix it.” “It felt like your day was more important than my day.” I would like to say that this conversation was a “wake-up call” for me, but it really wasn’t. That’s because I recently retired and now I’m usually not stressed out at the end of a day of coaching clients or recording podcast episodes. I’m not saying that this is what you are doing every day. I am saying that it is something that we need to talk about. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to answer the question: Does Your Spouse/Partner/Best Friend Have "Listening Fatigue?” Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. Episode 128: Do 3 Things Now And 4 Things Later To THRIVE During "The 100 Days Of May"
When I was a kid, I learned the following poem: 30 days has September, April, June and November. All the rest have 31, except for February, it’s the one Which only has 28 days clear, And 29 in each Leap Year. Unfortunately, there is a big fat lie hiding in this poem. May actually has 100 days. Well, at least it feels that way in our private schools with all of the: banquets, ceremonies, dances, concerts, teacher observations, final exams, field trips and Graduation. It is easy to go into survival mode during “The 100 Days Of May”, but we are not going to do that! Episode 127: This One Strategy Will Significantly Increase Your Productivity AND Make You Better At Delegating
I want to know if any of these statements describe a typical day at school for you: You run around putting out fires, playing “Whack-A-Mole” with your hair on fire. You finally get back to your office and sit down at your desk, but you don’t know what to do next. So, you stare blankly at your computer screen for a while and then you start checking emails. When you look at your “to do list” you immediately feel overwhelmed because it is so long, so big and so disorganized. If that sounds like your typical day, then you are in good company. I just described a “day in the life” of about 90% of private school leaders. That’s the bad news. The good news is that around 10% of Private School Leaders are feeling productive, energized and organized. I want to teach you a strategy that will move you from the 90% to the 10%. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to teach you the One Strategy Will Significantly Increase Your Productivity AND Make You Better At Delegating. Episode 126: The 4 Keys To Surviving "Tough Conversation Season"
Where I live, we get to experience all four seasons. Right now the first signs of spring are popping up all around me. We have some very distinct seasons at our private schools: Back To School Season Countdown to Winter Break The 100 Days of May We also have another season at our schools in late March and early April. It’s my least favorite season of the year. I refer to it as "Tough Conversation Season.” This is usually the time of year when we have to have some difficult conversations. We may need to meet with a teacher to tell them that we will not be offering them a position in the fall. We may need to meet with a parent to tell them that their child needs to repeat Kindergarten. Earlier in my career, I did not handle Tough Conversation Season very well. I would often let my fear, anxiety and insecurities keep me from making the best decision for the school or the best decision for the child. I want to help you learn from my mistakes. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to tell you The 4 Keys To Surviving "Tough Conversation Season" I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. I am a huge fan of 80’s movies. Some of my favorites are Rocky 4, Back To The Future, Ghostbusters, Die Hard, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Top Gun. However, I am not a fan of scary movies. In fact, two of my least favorite words are “jump scare” From 2008-2012, the 5 movies in the Twilight franchise grossed more than $1.3 billion. I didn’t want to, but I went with my wife to every single one of those movies. Even though the Twilight franchise was more romance novel than slasher horror flick, those vampires still really freaked me out. In our private schools, we have our own version of a vampire. I’m talking about the teacher that sucks the energy right out of you. Not only do they drain you, but they can suck the energy right out of a team meeting just moments after they open their mouth. It’s the teacher who always has a complaint, constantly needs to vent, has an unending series of "emergencies", but it’s usually the same “crisis”, over and over. You know the teacher I’m talking about, right? Well, on today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast we are going to discuss 5 Ways To Deal With The Teacher That Is An "Energy Vampire". I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD. Thanks so much for listening and thanks for making a difference! Episode 122: How To Navigate Complex Emotions When You Get The Parent Survey Results
You have probably heard the saying, “No two days the same". This is an accurate description of your job as a private school leader. I used to say to my family, “I go to school to see what’s going to happen”. While our days are very unpredictable, I have found that some days during the school year are actually very predictable. For example: Best Day: The day of the 8th Grade vs. Faculty Basketball Game Most Rewarding Day: Graduation Day Most Discouraging Day: The day that I get the parent survey results…… I don’t know about you, but I ride a roller coaster of emotions when the parent survey results come out: anger, joy, disappointment, pride, embarrassment, confusion, Imposter Syndrome, happiness, sadness and more. Receiving feedback is an important part of our jobs and it can help us grow as a school and grow as leaders. That said, parent feedback can be soul crushing when it does not align with how you think things are going at school. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast we are going to discuss How To Navigate Complex Emotions When You Get The Parent Survey Results. Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 121: 3 Reasons Why You Should Start Your Own Instagram Account At School
I want to tell you something about myself. I am not a fan of social media. Now, don’t get me wrong, I can definitely zone out while scrolling through reels on Instagram. The algorithm will always keep sending me videos of dachshunds, basketball highlights, drone shots of the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ and clips of my favorite stand up comedians: Nate Bargatze, Sebastian Maniscalco and Jim Gaffigan. I’m just not a fan of how social media makes people feel. A lot of comparison is happening when we see others taking that cool vacation, wearing that new outfit, driving that new car, or posting pics of their latest trendy home decor. Also, everyone is mad about something and the comments section is to be avoided like the plague So, if I don’t like social media, why am I doing an episode about why you should start a school Instagram account if you don’t already have one? Well, I will admit that I have my work cut out for me today. But, I feel strongly that this is something really, really important for you to do as a school leader. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to give you 3 Reasons Why You Should Start Your Own Instagram Account At School. Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. You are making a difference in the lives of the students, teachers and parents at your school. I know that what you do is difficult, exhausting and lonely. Episode 120: It May Be Time For You To Consider A Continuous Enrollment Model
“Enrollment Season” Two words that can stir up a variety of emotions in nearly every private school leader. Enrollment season can cause you to feel stress, anxiety and uncertainty. You might be thinking “here we go again” and that is going to be a real grind. According to Independent School Management, 30–40% of private schools are currently using a continuous enrollment model or are working toward implementing this approach in the near future. For 31 years, I was used to a very traditional model: send out enrollment contracts, remind families of the deadline, start making phone calls when the deadline has passed, etc. But, two years ago, my most recent school switched to a continuous enrollment model and it has been a real game-changer. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I want you to know that It May Be Time For You To Consider A Continuous Enrollment Model. I know that you are super busy, so be sure to listen while you are doing something else. I hope that you will get value from this episode as you serve and lead your school community. Episode 119: Reminding Your Parents That Attendance Is A Privilege And Not A Right
We’ve all been there. A parent is in your office and they are complaining about the school’s policies for detention or dress code or sports eligibility or the grading scale, etc, etc…….. It can get really frustrating when the school policy is in black and white in your handbook and the parent doesn’t think that these rules should apply to their child. It gets even worse when you are discussing a suspension from school or from the basketball team. I think that part of the reason that they act this way is because they are confused. They think that attendance at your school is a right. But attendance at your school is not a right. It’s a privilege. Are we just going to throw up our hands in frustration and give up? Of course not. We are going to take action On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to talk about Reminding Your Parents That Attendance Is A Privilege And Not A Right. Episode 118: What To Do When The Parent Group Chat Becomes A Problem
Technology is absolutely amazing. Smartphones, internet, facial recognition software, AI, self-driving cars, artificial hearts, 3D printers, robots, GPS, wearable devices, the cloud and virtual reality have helped change our lives for the better. We also know that technology comes with its share of challenges. A parent group chat on WhatsApp, Facebook or a Smartphone can be an awesome place for sharing information about school events, giving reminders about spirit week and communicating changes to the time that the basketball team will be getting back to the school. But, these chat groups can also go down the wrong path and quickly devolve into teacher-bashing, judging parenting styles and critiques of the 4th Grade Math curriculum. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss What To Do When The Parent Group Chat Becomes A Problem. Episode 115: The Top 10 Leadership Nuggets Of 2024
Back in the mid to late 90’s, I would get two stocking stuffers that I really liked. In my Christmas stocking, I would receive the special, year end editions of Sports Illustrated and People magazine. These special editions would be full of Top 10 lists from the best movies, pop songs and TV shows to the best athletes, teams and biggest comebacks from that particular year. I know that magazines are quickly becoming a thing of the past, but I love Top 10 lists so much that I hope that they live on forever. At the end of each year, I like to go back through the last 52 episodes and look for the best strategies, time management hacks, quotes and leadership advice. I have made my selections and on this week’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to share The Top 10 Leadership Nuggets Of 2024! As the year comes to a close, I just want to take a moment and express my sincere gratitude and admiration to you for all of your hard work this year. You sacrifice so much as you pour yourself into the kids and teachers at your school. Thank you for serving them all year long. I also want to say thank you for listening to the podcast and for sharing the link with other leaders in your life and rising leaders at your school. You inspire me to keep making weekly episodes and I am excited to continue to serve you in 2025. I would LOVE to hear from you. Email me ([email protected]) and let me know your biggest takeaway from the podcast this year and also tell me your biggest struggle in 2024. It can literally be just a few words, but your feedback means so much and maybe I will turn your pain point into an upcoming episode! Thanks again for all you do. I will be praying for you, your family and your school to have a safe, prosperous and Happy New Year! Mark Minkus What is your biggest problem right now? Episode 112: How To Handle The Rise Of Deepfake Content And NCII (Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery)
Today’s episode is going to feel like a trip to the dentist. We usually don’t want to go and we try to avoid it. When we finally do go it is usually pretty uncomfortable. We may want to avoid talking about this. It will definitely be uncomfortable to discuss, but it is a very, very important topic. We are facing an invisible threat. It is just as real as water on the Gym floor or a jagged piece of metal on the monkey bars. Even though we can’t see it, we need to know what it is, why it exists, how to reduce the likelihood that it will happen at your school and how to effectively respond if it does happen. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to talk about How To Handle The Rise Of Deepfake Content And NCII (Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery) Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. Episode 111: Who Gets The Credit And Who Takes The Blame?
Picture this. The coach of your favorite NFL team is having his post-game press conference. Your quarterback just threw four interceptions, including one that very likely cost your team the win. When your coach is asked about the quarterback’s interceptions, you already know what he is going to say. “This loss is on me. I need to do a better job getting everyone ready to play. I need to put him in a better position so that he doesn’t have to try to make those throws.” He will take responsibility publicly and have a conversation with the quarterback behind closed doors. A characteristic of great leadership is to accept responsibility, even if it is not your fault. A characteristic of poor leadership is to play the blame game, get defense and throw your people under the bus. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to answer the question: At your school, Who Gets The Credit And Who Takes The Blame? Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 108: Grace AND Revenge: The Paradox Behind What Parents Want
par·a·dox /ˈperəˌdäks/, noun a seemingly absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition that when investigated or explained may prove to be well founded or true As school leaders, we often face a paradox in parent expectations: When their child is involved in a mistake or misbehavior, parents expect grace and understanding from the school. However, when their child is on the receiving end of wrongdoing, those same parents can demand swift and severe punishment that feels like a quest for revenge. So, why does this happen, and how can we, as school leaders, respond in ways that uphold fairness, consistency, and our school’s values? On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss Grace AND Revenge: The Paradox Behind What Parents Want. Episode 107: How to Effectively Lead Boomers, Gen X, Millennials & Gen Z
“Our research shows that, fundamentally, people want the same things, no matter what generation they represent. So the so-called generation gap in the workplace is, in large part, the result of miscommunication and misunderstanding, fueled by common insecurities and the desire for clout. Successfully leading across generations is actually pretty straightforward.” Jennifer Deal, former Senior Research Scientist, Center for Creative Leadership Fundamentally, people want the same things. Our private schools often have a wonderful mix of Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X and Boomers. While they may have their differences, they all want to feel psychologically safe, engaged, valued, respected and heard. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to move past lazy stereotypes and learn How to Effectively Lead Boomers, Gen X, Millennials & Gen Z. Episode 106: How To Avoid "Amygdala Hijack" In High Stress Situations
We have all been there. We’ve all had moments where stress seems to take over and we react in ways we regret later. It might be raising your voice at a teacher or student. It might be overreacting during an argument with a loved one. Later, we usually have regrets and we ask ourselves, “WHY DID I DO THAT?” This is often due to something called an amygdala hijack, a term coined by psychologist Daniel Goleman in his book Emotional Intelligence. We have stressful jobs. The stakes are high. So many people are watching us and we are setting the example for what great leadership looks like. We cannot afford to let our amygdala hijack our brain and then just “hope for the best”. On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to talk about How To Avoid "Amygdala Hijack" In High Stress Situations. I would LOVE to hear from you! Please just reply to this email and tell me the number one strategy that you have learned listening to the podcast and your number one pain point so far this year. Episode 104: The Emotional Price Tag Of An Ongoing Lawsuit
A 2022 study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that nearly 40% of private schools reported facing some form of legal action in the past five years. Of all lawsuits filed against schools, 90% of them are settled out of court. That means that it no longer matters whether or not the person filing the lawsuit has enough evidence to “win”. What matters is if they can find an attorney that will take the case. These two statistics mean that more private school leaders are dealing with more lawsuits than ever before. Litigation is time consuming, stressful and can become very overwhelming very quickly. How are you supposed to run your school and deal with a lawsuit? On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss 7 strategies to help you navigate The Emotional Price Tag Of An Ongoing Lawsuit. Episode 103: Make Parent Satisfaction SKYROCKET By Using "The Nordstrom Way"
In 1975, Craig Trounce was a store associate at a Nordstrom store in Fairbanks, Alaska. One day, Craig noticed a customer rolling a pair of tires into the store. When Craig asked how he could help, the customer asked to return the tires, insisting that he bought them at that very location with a guarantee that he could bring them back to the store at any time. Just one problem: Nordstorm doesn’t sell tires. What Craig Trounce did next has given Nordstrom nearly 50 years of free publicity about their unmatched level of customer service. In fact, if you Google “Nordstrom tires”, you will get roughly 3.8 million results. Do you want your parents to be “raving fans”? Do you want your parent survey scores to be through the roof? Do you want your student retention rates to be high? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then today’s episode is for you as we discuss how to Make Parent Satisfaction SKYROCKET By Using "The Nordstrom Way". Episode 100: Your Email Inbox Is A Chronological List Of Everyone Else's Priorities
So, I want to ask you a question about something that you do several times each day. Let’s say that you are out and about in the school, walking around, solving problems, handling student issues, talking to teachers and maybe attending a meeting. So here’s the question: When you finally come back to your office and sit down at your desk, what is the first thing that you do? About 90% of private school leaders do the same thing. They open their inbox and respond to a few emails. There are some very valid reasons we do this. Your brain is craving a dopamine hit because you just expended some emotional energy and some physical energy while walking around your school. You also have a little decision fatigue and your cognitive load has increased. Unfortunately, your brain doesn’t know the difference between a high value task and a low value task. Your brain just knows that it really needs a dopamine hit. On today’s episode of the Private School Leader Podcast, I am going to help you understand why dipping in and out of your email inbox is the least productive thing that you can do because Your Email Inbox Is A Chronological List Of Everyone Else's Priorities. Thank you for taking me along with you when you are walking the dog, driving to school or running errands. I appreciate you and what you are doing for the lucky kids and teachers at your school. Episode 97: Overcoming Perfectionism (B+ Is Always Better Than An Incomplete)
I want to hit you with two quotes: “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.’ “Focus on progress, not perfection.” You have likely heard these quotes before. But, I wonder if you have ever heard this quote from Brene Brown: "Understanding the difference between healthy striving and perfectionism is critical to laying down the shield and picking up your life. Research shows that perfectionism hampers success. It's often the path to depression, anxiety, addiction, and life paralysis." Do you know the difference between “healthy striving” and perfectionism? Does perfectionism ever get in the way of getting your tasks done on time? On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast we are going to talk about Overcoming Perfectionism (B+ Is Always Better Than An Incomplete). Episode 93: What To Do When A Teacher Quits In August
I call it the “August Apology”. I will be sitting at my desk in early August and a teacher walks into my office. They say something like, “I never thought that I would do this, but…..” Then they proceed to tell me that they have taken a job at another school. Typically, it is for more pay and better benefits and it makes logical sense for this teacher to take that job. That said, an “August Apology” is not about logic for private school leaders. It is usually all about emotions. It starts with a sinking feeling and an increased heart rate as we think about the fact that we need to hire another teacher, and fast. It sometimes moves on to the “catastrophizing” phase that typically includes racing thoughts and sweaty palms. I’ve been there. Many, many, many times. One summer, my High School Math teacher resigned the day before the first day of school to take a job at a public High School. I ended up teaching Geometry 9 and Geometry 10 for the first twelve weeks of school until I could find a teacher. I genuinely hope and pray that it doesn’t happen to you. But, if it does, I want you to be prepared. So, on today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss What To Do When A Teacher Quits In August. Thank you for listening to the podcast every week. You are making a difference in the lives of the students, teachers and parents at your school. Episode 92: How To Handle The "Underminer" And The "On The Job Retiree"
We all have them. Difficult teachers. I wonder if you have an “Underminer” or an “On The Job Retiree”. Behaviors of Underminers They agree with you or sit silently in your presence, but engage in negative conversations behind your back. They fail to follow through on a new initiative or work actively to sabotage the effort by stirring up negative feelings among other staff. They undermine your power by recruiting other staff members against the initiative They evoke fear in those who support the change. Behaviors of On-the-Job Retirees Some staff want to do as little as possible and just coast until retirement. They have a poor work ethic, arrive at the last possible minute, and leave as soon as the workday has ended. Because they may openly speak about their desire to coast until retirement, this has the potential to bring down other faculty. It may also add to your workload in dealing with students and parents who complain about these staff members. Do either of those descriptions ring a bell? Well, I’ve got you covered! On today’s episode of The Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to discuss How To Handle The "Underminer" And The "On The Job Retiree". Episode 91: 6 Leadership Lessons From A Shepherd
Have you ever seen a shepherd leading a flock of sheep? I have never seen it in person, but I have seen this happen on a documentary or two. It is amazing to see how hundreds of sheep follow one person using just their voice and a wooden staff. The shepherd helps the flock travel long distances, find new areas to graze, avoid danger and return home safely. Recently, I have been struck by the role of a shepherd and how similar it is to a successful school leader. On today’s Private School Leader Podcast, we are going to consider 6 Leadership Lessons From A Shepherd: Guiding with vision Protecting the flock Servant leadership Individualized knowledge and attention Adaptability Patience Thanks for listening every week! Episode 90: The 7 Keys To Becoming A Better Public Speaker
“According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy.” Jerry Seinfeld I see it happen every year on Back To School Night. Amazing, highly skilled teachers melt into a puddle of goo when they have to get up in front of a group of parents to give a presentation. These same teachers can successfully manage a room full of 7th Graders on a sunny afternoon in May. These same teachers can successfully manage a room full of rambunctious Kindergarteners without breaking a sweat. Speaking publicly in front of adults makes them run for the hills. Now, it is important to remember that most private school leaders are former teachers. Public speaking is a big part of our job and it actually causes a lot of stress and discomfort to a large percentage of school leaders. Are you getting better at public speaking or are you just getting used to it? On today’s episode of the Private School Leader Podcast, we will be discussing The 7 Keys To Becoming A Better Public Speaker. I would LOVE to hear from you. Please email me at [email protected] and send me just a couple of sentences: What was your biggest pain point during this past school year? What has been your most important takeaway from listening to this podcast? I hope that you will listen to the podcast for your weekly dose of motivation, inspiration and PD.
