Ep 453: Creating Work-Life Balance While Making More Money With Olivia Fox
EIn this episode, I'm interviewing PGSDer Olivia Fox. Olivia walks us through the practical ways that she's used the tools inside PGSD to help her increase her business revenue while having a better work-life balance at the same time. Olivia experienced an impressive 181% increase in revenue from the previous year, all while enjoying a better work-life balance and a healthier relationship with herself. This episode gives you an idea of what's possible when you stop using advice that doesn't work for your perfectionist brain. You may not realise it, but traditional productivity methods like to-do lists and time blocking make you procrastinate, overthink, hold yourself back, and make it harder to move past the fear of judgment. There are so many subtle ways we can procrastinate. Olivia shares what she does in her power planning each day to stop procrastinating, complete the courageous tasks and finish work at the time she said she would. If you have courageous tasks you know you need to do right now and you're just not doing them, then this episode is for you. Olivia and I talk about how she gets herself to do those courageous tasks. We discuss how you actually go from being someone who intellectually understands what is required to build a business, to being that person who feels safe enough emotionally to build your business the way you want to. I'm so passionate about giving perfectionist entrepreneurs the tools that help them create a healthy work-life balance, feel safe to show up, be seen and trust themselves throughout their journey, even when things don't go perfectly. Ep 452: PGSD Misconceptions + Frequently Asked Questions
EIn this episode I'm answering your questions and discussing misconceptions about my group program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done. Since the doors to PGSD are closing at 11:59pm New York time on 21 March 2024, I want to make sure you have everything you need to decide whether PGSD is a good fit for you. PGSD is my group coaching program for perfectionists who are building businesses. It will have you planning properly and getting out of your own way. If you're someone who has been doing a lot of procrasti-learning and you know a lot about what you need to do to build your business but you're just not able to get yourself to do it - that is where PGSD comes in. Tune in to learn more about PGSD, how it will help you get out of your own way and whether it's a good fit for you. The doors to PGSD close soon. You can sign up at samlaurabrown.com/pgsd. Questions Answered: I'm not sure if I'm a perfectionist but I can relate to what you talk about on the podcast. Does PGSD help me get clear about exactly what I want to do? I'm unsure about the direction I want to take and how to make it come together. Is PGSD a good fit for me if I'm not sure about my niche yet? Is PGSD just for coaches/other kinds of entrepreneurs or do you have members who are creatives/artists making money from their art? Is PGSD a good fit for me if the tasks that trip me up in my business are different from the examples you share on the podcast? How do I know PGSD won't just be more procrasti-learning? I have ideas to start a business, but haven't started yet. Will PGSD be a good fit for me? Can I pay for PGSD in another currency? How much time would you recommend dedicating to PGSD per week, if I was going to join this program? Does PGSD help you stay accountable? When teaching Power Planning, do you go over a framework that can be followed? Do you provide ones for us to 'try on' until we find what works best for us? What platform is the course hosted on? Do we have time to get to know you directly and/or others on the programme or is it mostly self study? Is this a program to help someone who is already a coach stop procrastinating or is this for someone who isn't a coach learn how to be a coach as well? Is this the right program to take if I want to be a coach? I am interested in PGSD and power planning, but I don't run my own business or plan to work on starting one. What would you recommend? Do you have a short version or intensive version of PGSD? I'm not sure lifetime access is the right fit for me. I'm specifically interested in learning more about power planning and getting assistance/ more insight into it from a shorter course. Can you please share more information about the coaching process/experience? And the sorts of things people get coached on - is it specific to their business or moreso to their behaviors and habits? What does lifetime access actually mean? Do we have access to one on one Q&A for help if needed beyond the group? I'm in another program - should I wait until it's over before I join PGSD? Ep 450: [Procrastination Series] Creating 'Positive Time Pressure' So It's Easy To Do Your Best Work
EThis is part 4 of my 5-part series on how to *actually* stop procrastinating. In this episode you'll learn how to create 'positive time pressure' so you can get your best work done without burning out. If you're anything like the perfectionist entrepreneurs I work with, you work well under pressure. But there are 3 big problems with this: You're constantly exhausted or burned out You push off the most important things because there's no pressure to get them done You have to create a business that feels like a job in order to be productive Let me teach you how to create 'positive time pressure' so that you can become a true high performer. That means being able to work well under pressure AND being able to work well without it. In this episode (part 4) you'll learn how to develop the skill of saying you'll do something and then actually doing it - even when it's not urgent and no one else knows about it. This is what all successful entrepreneurs have in common. To perform at your best as an entrepreneur, you need to be able to perform even when there's no pressure. Anyone can develop this skill. Me and my clients do it by using our Power Planning to create what I call 'positive time pressure'. The beautiful thing is you don't even need to be thinking about 'positive time pressure' when you're Power Planning. Power Planning creates 'positive time pressure' without you needing to think about it so you can become a true high performer and get shit done without the stress, pressure and burnout. The biggest needle movers for your business, like starting a podcast or posting consistently on social media, are never going to *actually* be urgent. Listen to this episode now so you can learn how to create positive time pressure and you can turn your talents on when you want, not just when the circumstances force you. All you need to do is hit play… This 5-part series is for perfectionists who: Get stuck in research mode when it comes to your niche, messaging and branding Buy cameras, domains and planners to try to motivate themselves to show up Push important tasks off until the last minute because you need the pressure Everything you've learned about how to stop procrastinating doesn't apply to perfectionists! Ep 448: [Procrastination Series] 5 Steps To Get Unstuck With Big Business Decisions (Like Your Niche)
EThis is part 2 of my 5-part series on how to *actually* stop procrastinating. If you're struggling to move forward with your business because there's a big decision you need to make first then you need to listen to this episode (part 2)... Maybe you need to figure out the perfect niche, your messaging, your branding or you're still deciding which social media platforms you should be on. You've probably been signing up for webinars, listening to podcasts and buying programs to help you BUT rather than feeling clearer, you feel more confused than ever and more pressure to get it just right… You don't want to make the wrong decision, you want to get it right from the beginning so you have the best chance of succeeding. If you're like the perfectionist entrepreneurs I work with, there are a few big decisions that have been keeping you stuck. It's counterintuitive but your human brain feels discomfort when making a decision that involves you changing your circumstances - even if that's a positive change. Your human brain doesn't want you to make more money and it doesn't want you to put yourself out there. It wants you to stay safe and that means staying in familiarity, even if you hate having to work for someone else and not being able to rely on your business financially. By the end of the episode, you'll be able to use my simple 5 step process for making decisions and use it to make a decision that feels good for you, in a timeframe that doesn't freak your perfectionist brain out. Ep 446: How To Stop Revenge Bedtime Procrastination (best of the podcast)
EThis episode is one of the most popular episodes on this podcast! Revenge bedtime procrastination is something most perfectionists struggle to stop. When you're not planning properly as a perfectionist, you put more business tasks on your to-do list than you have time to complete. Because you want to be productive, you put pressure on yourself to get everything done. But then you don't know what to do first… You end up working on a random business task until it's 80% done (and then get distracted by something else) or you do nothing at all. All the while, you're feeling guilty that you're so far behind. You're thinking about all of the things you should be doing that aren't getting done (like posting consistently on social media). And you're trying to catch up on all of the life admin your past self has delegated to you. Every day has an undercurrent of overwhelm, panic and stress. And with every unproductive day that passes, it only gets harder to trust you'll get everything done. You're burned out from all the stopping and starting. And you're beginning to wonder if you'll ever change. But then comes bedtime. You promised yourself you'd get to bed on time but you knew you wouldn't. But why would you? The hours past bedtime are the only guilt-free time you get to yourself. In the still of the night, you can relax and unwind. Nothing is expected of you. The pressure is off. And you have the promise of a more productive tomorrow. Here's the thing – a bedtime alarm or better nighttime routine won't stop revenge bedtime procrastination. Revenge bedtime procrastination is a symptom of a bigger problem. Because you haven't been planning properly… You're putting too much on your to-do list You don't know what's important and what isn't You can't trust yourself to follow through on your plans You're trying to catch up on everything your past self put off You're not getting clean rest during the day When you start planning properly, revenge bedtime procrastination will stop. You'll be able to wake up at the time you want, without snoozing your alarm. Instead of watching Instagram stories, you'll do the things you truly want to with your time – turn a corner of your home into the most inspiring workspace for your business. And you'll finally read all of those books on your bedside table. Starting on the 6 March 2024 I'm releasing a 5-Part Podcast Series on How To Stop Procrastinating. An episode will be released every other day so make sure you're subscribed to this podcast. P.S. You'll be able to sign up for PGSD when the doors open on 14-21 March 2024. Ep 445: Your Perfectionism Handbrake + 10 Signs It's Turned On (best of the podcast)
EIn this episode we are going to be talking about your perfectionism handbrake – what it is, how to release it and feel safe doing so. This is going to be what helps you to get out of your own way in your business so you're showing up fully, serving your customers and clients, making more money and enjoying the day to day of being in business. This is one of the best episodes of the podcast. The first clip you'll hear is from an episode recorded in March 2022 and the second clip was recorded in May 2021. I'll tell you the three reasons why I call it your perfectionism handbrake. This emerged as a response to the mentality that society has around perfectionism – that it's a personality flaw or that it's because we don't intellectually understand that done is better than perfect. When your perfectionist mindset is working against you, building your business is like driving a car with a handbrake on. In today's episode I also tell you the 10 subtle signs that your perfectionism handbrake is on. And the ONLY reason that you're not getting shit done in your business is because no one has ever taught you how to release your perfectionism handbrake quickly and easily. So much of the work that I do with perfectionists is to help you understand what it is so that you're able to get your perfectionist mindset on your side and get yourself in a growth mindset. That's why this episode is all about your perfectionism handbrake, the 10 not-so-obvious signs your perfectionism handbrake is on and how to release it. Once you learn how to release your perfectionism handbrake, you'll be able to build your business at full speed without burning out. Ep 444: How To Plan Amidst Uncertainty with Michelle Weeks (best of the podcast)
EMost perfectionists find it challenging to plan out their week when they don't know what will come up or how much energy they'll have. Whether you're working an exhausting day job, doing shift work or raising young children alongside building your business – there are certain things that can feel hard to plan around. Especially when no one has taught you how to plan properly… Some perfectionists plan their week as if everything will go smoothly, hoping for the best and then abandoning their plans when the inevitable happens. Others feel like they can't make plans at all and wing it day-by-day, praying they'll be able to find the motivation to do what matters most. But neither of these approaches work. That's why I interviewed Michelle Weeks on how to plan properly amidst uncertainty. Michelle is a PGSD Coach as well as being a life coach who helps mums resiliently and joyfully navigate the ups and downs of motherhood. This is one of the best episodes of the podcast. This episode was originally published in January 2022 and was very popular so I wanted to share it with you again. At the time of this recording Michelle and I were mothers of 6 month old babies (Freddie and Lydia). And we're both using Power Planning to get out of our own way and shit done in our businesses. (Note: Since this recording, Sam gave birth to twin boys in 2023 (Jack and James) and Michelle gave birth to a baby girl in 2023 (Ella). So as you're listening to this episode please know that Power Planning is most certainly still helping Sam and Michelle plan properly amidst uncertainty). It can come to be that you develop the fear of disappointing yourself again in the future. Ep 442: Identifying Your Needle Movers When Everything Feels Important (best of the podcast)
EWhen we're following planning advice that doesn't work for perfectionists, we struggle to know which tasks to prioritise. We have SO MANY ideas and we want to do them all, perfectly, right away. But we don't trust ourselves to pick the right tasks to focus on or to do them consistently. We also don't trust ourselves to handle the success, money and the attention that would follow… Because of this, we prioritise the familiar and easy tasks on our to-do list and lament the fact we don't have more time to get to the important marketing tasks we know we need to do. But once you know how to identify your needle movers, busywork and procrasti-learning are naturally replaced with self-trust and ACTION. In this episode I'll help you learn how to identify your needle movers when everything feels important. By the end of this episode, you'll know which questions to ask yourself so identifying your needle movers is easy. You'll also have a new way of thinking about needle movers so that you don't feel so much pressure to pick the 'perfect' task or pressure to work on. Ep 441: Using Your Calendar As A Tool For Kindness So You Never Burn Out Again (best of the podcast)
EAs a perfectionist entrepreneur who wants to make a meaningful contribution to the world, the kindest thing you could possibly do for yourself is to honour your potential, rather than protect it. We perfectionists get in our own way because we're scared to find out that our best isn't 'good enough'. We procrasti-work, overwhelm ourselves and burn ourselves out because we're terrified that giving a full, balls-to-the-wall effort might come up short – and that we will end up finding out we're unintelligent and unlovable. But when you're planning properly as a perfectionist, you'll naturally be using your calendar as a tool for kindness. Being kind to yourself as you plan is about doing the most important tasks in your business in a consistent, sustainable, productive and courageous way. Proper planning makes execution 10x easier and more effective – and dissolves resistance, overwhelm and procrastination. And if that isn't a recipe for reaching your potential, I don't know what is. In today's epsiode I share practical tips and advice to help you be as kind as possible to yourself with your calendar (because true kindness will make you MORE productive and successful, not less). If you often feel the urge to rebel against your calendar and plans, this episode is for you. Listen in today. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode441. Naomi is a website designer and developer who was creating vague goals and plans (and endless to-do lists) to take her business full-time. Estelle is a fashion designer whose perfectionism handbrake was stopping her from following her launch plan and telling people about her designs. They all made the Three Month Commitment to Power Planning, set their Growth Goals and started planning properly. And what happened next was a little different for each of them… So I invited them on the podcast to talk about what to expect in your first 6 weeks of Power Planning. This episode is going to normalise what often happens when you start Power Planning so that you never mistakenly think you're off track. Ep 433: Why I've Always Struggled To Post Consistently On Instagram
EIn this episode I'm sharing why I've always struggled to post consistently on instagram. What I want to share with you in this episode is some of the really specific and practical things I uncovered recently in my own self-coaching about why this is something I've struggled with since 2014. We perfectionists like to think if we just have more time or the perfect content calendar or a bigger audience then it'll be easy to be consistent. But that's simply not the case and what I share in this episode really illustrates what *really* causes us to get in our own way with social media. I'm also going to share the real reason why it's so easy for me to be consistent with this podcast and the perfectionism that I'm continuing to work on even though it's very successful. This episode is also going to give you a permission slip to trust yourself to build your business in the way you *actually* want. And an illustration of why showing up consistently doesn't mean being perfect. If you've been struggling to post consistently to social media, no matter what you do, this episode is for you. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode433. Ep 432: The Hidden Connection Between Self-Image + Self-Sabotage
EIf you want to consistently follow through with your plans without having to use willpower or motivation - or end up burning out - you need to learn how to upgrade your self-image. Ep 430: How To Stop Procrastinating On Getting Started
EI've worked with 1,000+ perfectionist entrepreneurs and something we all have in common is that we procrastinate. We'd rather not do something at all than do it imperfectly. And this is a big problem when it comes to business! More often than not, there's no external deadline to force us into action so we can end up procrastinating on important projects for months if not years. In this episode I'm sharing advice to help you stop putting off that project you've been wanting to start - whether it's starting a podcast or a Youtube channel or launching a new product or service. Tune in to learn how to finally get yourself moving yourself forward, even if you don't feel perfectly inspired or motivated to do it. Plus I share all of the numbers (like our sign up numbers, revenue and whether we hit our goal) and behind the scenes insights so you can get out of your own way. Ep 425: Why Lowering Your Goals Isn't The Answer
EAs a perfectionist it's hard to imagine a world where you're successful without having put a huge amount of pressure on yourself too. We attribute our drive and accomplishments to the way we urge ourselves to do more and do better. Which begs the question - how do you stop putting pressure on yourself without giving up on your goals? And that's what I'm answering in this episode. I'm also sharing a personal recording that I never planned to release on this podcast. It was recorded in October 2021 when I was feeling suffocated by the pressure and expectations I was putting on myself. I hope that by me sharing it it reminds you that we all go through ups and downs. And that you're not failing, you're feeling. Ep 424: For When You Feel Behind
EIf you're anything like me, you love personal development and being productive. The downside of this - when it's coupled with perfectionism - is that if you don't feel like you're growing and you notice yourself getting in your own way then it's easy to feel behind. If you've been stuck in a rut or feeling like you should know better than to be struggling then today's episode is for you. I'm sharing practical advice to help you get back on track as well as a few important ideas to help you stop beating yourself up for not being further along. Ep 423: [Realistic Day In My Life] How I Recover From Mistakes + The Two Kinds of Self-Coaching
EI thought I'd record a 'day in the life' episode to share a behind the scenes about what a work day looks like for me. This episode has two parts - I recorded the first while I was driving into work and chatted through the meetings I have scheduled, what I hope to get done, what the structure of my day looks like etc. And then I recorded the second part while I was driving home from work so I could share what actually happened (including a big mistake I made and how I recovered from it). This episode was recorded a couple of weeks before our most recent launch of PGSD. It's a chatty episode for sure and one that's going to remind you that we're all just figuring this out as you go. And I don't know about you, but most of the time I don't need more information - I just need a reminder that I'm on the right path and if I keep showing up things will work out. Ep 420: Using Power Planning To Hit Six Figures with Natalie Koons
ENatalie's experience in PGSD is a great example of how learning to plan properly as a perfectionist can completely transform your whole life. Natalie explains… "Before PGSD I was chaos. I worked CONSTANTLY but I wasn't getting any of the important stuff done. From the first week I started in PGSD, I knew it was going to change my life - and it absolutely has in the most positive way and it's rippled into my personal life too" On 11 January 2022, Natalie signed up for PGSD. With the help of PGSD coaching and power planning, Natalie was able to quickly launch her course - which she'd been putting off doing for MONTHS. On 3 March 2022, Natalie posted in the PGSD Forum to say that she had 125 people sign up for her sock knitting course and made over $34,000. She hit her first quarterly milestone for her Growth Goal three times over! A milestone that had felt impossible only a few weeks earlier. 8 months into PGSD Natalie had already doubled her previous year's income (2021 income was $59,000 and 2022 income is $125,000 and still growing). Natalie's business has only continued to grow now that she's planning properly as a perfectionist. And in Natalie's words: "I know exactly what I need to do. I have taken the time to plan ahead. I am working through things every single day. I used to go to bed with an anxious feeling and I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning… PGSD has totally eliminated that for me. It's allowed me to feel the fear and the big things that are scary and say "I can do this. I now have support from the PGSD group and Forum and the coaching calls. It's helped me to get up every day and actually be excited to go to work. I've already seen big changes happen in my business. I've been able to be a better business owner and I've been able to help more people because of PGSD." Recently, I asked Natalie what were the 1-3 milestones that she achieved in her business with the help of PGSD. Natalie replied with: I doubled my previous year's income in the first 8 months of the year. I stopped working on weekends and at night. My husband and I were able to extend our dream of living in NYC from 1 year to 2 years because of the money I am making. Experience PGSD for yourself! Ep 419: [PLANNING SERIES] How To Master Power Planning Using PGSD
EThere are courageous things you need to do to build your business that you might never feel excited about… like pitching yourself as a guest on one of your favourite podcasts or posting on Instagram when you've been getting 17 likes or publishing your sales page when you're still working on believing that your product is worth the money. If you're only able to do things when you're in the mood to do them, your business won't get much further than it is now. So far, this series has shared how to solve your planning problems. I've taught you how to stop procrasti-planning, what the Power Planning process looks like from start to finish, how to plan your week amidst uncertainty and the importance of the Three Month Commitment. In the final episode, I'm sharing how to master power planning using PGSD. If you've resonated with the 5-Part Planning Series then this episode will explain the best next step and how I can support you further. It's time to solve your productivity and persistence problems so that you can get out of your own way and achieve your goals. Ep 418: [PLANNING SERIES] The 3 Month Commitment + Why It Matters
EPower Planning will get you out of your own way in your business and have you doing the deep perfectionism work you need to do - all while you're doing more of what matters than ever before (in less time and with less overthinking). But it won't work for you if you give up on it prematurely. The habit of giving up too soon is one of the main reasons you're not where you want to be in your business. Most perfectionists want overnight, struggle-free, push-of-a-button success and we quit when we don't get it. We feel disheartened, discouraged and inadequate - when really, we just hadn't tried for long enough. Making the Three Month Commitment to Power Planning matters. You won't feel like it's working after a week or two - and that's the whole point… The closer we are to being in the growth mindset, the easier it is to get out of our own way in your business - no hustling, willpower or 'pushing through' required. The very act of Power Planning will coax you out of your perfectionism. And the fact that Power Planning won't 'work' instantly is what allows this to happen. The Three Month Commitment might just be the missing ingredient in your business. And I share how it works (and what not to do) in today's episode… Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode418. In This Episode You'll Learn: How I discovered the power of the Three Month Commitment Why the Three Month Commitment makes it easier to get out of your own way What making the Three Month Commitment does NOT mean How not to be all-or-nothing about your Three Month Commitment Signs you're making progress with Power Planning during the first three months What to expect after three months of Power Planning Featured In The Episode: Episode 333: Your First Six Weeks Of Power Planning with Erin, Naomi and Estelle - https://samlaurabrown.com/episode333/ Join the waitlist for Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (PGSD) - samlaurabrown.com/pgsd Take the perfectionism quiz: samlaurabrown.com/quiz Sign up for daily Perfectionist Power-Ups - samlaurabrown.com/power Follow me on Instagram @perfectionismproject Announcement: PGSD will open for enrollment on 10 September 2023 (for one week only) My 12-month group coaching program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (aka PGSD) will teach you how to plan properly as a perfectionist and get out of your own way. Ep 417: [PLANNING SERIES] How To Plan Amidst Uncertainty
EMost perfectionists find it challenging to plan out their week when they don't know what will come up or how much energy they'll have. Whether you're working an exhausting day job, doing shift work or raising young children alongside building your business - there are certain things that can feel hard to plan around. Especially when no one has taught you how to plan properly… Some perfectionists plan their week as if everything will go smoothly, hoping for the best and then abandoning their plans when the inevitable happens. Others feel like they can't make plans at all and wing it day by day, praying they'll be able to find the motivation to do what matters most. But neither of these approaches work. If your weeks feel too uncertain but you would like to be able to plan in a way that allows you to follow through consistently and sustainably, then this episode is for you! You'll hear how I use my Power Planning to get out of my own way and get shit done in my business, even though I have a lot of uncertainty - being a parent of three kids under the age of three (including twins). In this episode, I dive deep into the practical things I do to make Power Planning work for me when life is throwing constant curveballs. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode417. In This Episode You'll Learn: The practical strategies that help you plan amidst any uncertainty How to structure your weeks in a way that makes sense for you The importance of 'buffer time' and where to add it in your calendar How Power Planning stops you from feeling bad about changing your plans mid-week How to create flexible structure that takes into account your perfectionist brain Featured In The Episode: Join the waitlist for Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (PGSD) - samlaurabrown.com/pgsd Take the perfectionism quiz: samlaurabrown.com/quiz Sign up for daily Perfectionist Power-Ups - samlaurabrown.com/power Follow me on Instagram @perfectionismproject Announcement: PGSD will open for enrollment on 10 September 2023 (for one week only) My 12-month group coaching program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (aka PGSD) will teach you how to plan properly as a perfectionist and get out of your own way. Ep 416: [PLANNING SERIES] A Step-By-Step Walkthrough of Power Planning
EPower Planning covers everything perfectionists must do to plan properly. It's a simple 3 step process that anyone can learn. And I walk you through it in this episode. Here's a brief overview of how Power Planning works but be sure to tune into this episode to get all the details! Step 1. Power Hour - in your weekly Power Hour you'll put your needle moving tasks in your digital calendar and create simple contingency plans that make it easy to get everything done without feeling overwhelmed. Step 2. Little Tweaks - every day you'll spend a little bit of time tweaking your calendar so you can get everything done without ever feeling behind or burning out, even if something unexpected comes up. Step 3. Weekly Review - at the end of the week you'll do a brief weekly review to discover what worked, what didn't work and what to do differently so next week's plans are even easier to follow through on. Power Planning helps you avoid the planning mistakes that stop perfectionists from following through with their plans. After listening to this episode, you'll know how to make the kind of plans that get you out of your own way - even when you're scared to put yourself out there. Ep 415: [PLANNING SERIES] Procrasti-Planning Versus Planning Properly
EPerfectionists get in their own way when they follow the same planning advice as everyone else. That's why I've recorded a 5-part planning series for the podcast that'll help you plan properly as a perfectionist. This planning series is for perfectionists who write and rewrite long to-do lists of business tasks they never start, fall behind because they underestimate how long things will take and have notebooks full of ideas they haven't done anything with. This episode (part 1 of the Planning Series) is all about the differences between procrasti-planning and planning properly as a perfectionist. This will help you understand where you've been going wrong with planning so you can do something about it. In this episode, I also dissect common pieces of planning advice (from the top-ranked planning article on Google) and explain why this advice doesn't work for perfectionists. The episode is worth listening to for this alone. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode415. In This Episode You'll Learn: The difference between procrasti-planning, and what it means to be planning properly Why to-do lists and time blocking doesn't work Why perfectionists can't follow the same planning advice as everyone else The hidden reasons perfectionists procrasti-plan How planning properly will help you get out of the burnout cycle How to spot procrasti-planning so you can start planning properly as a perfectionist Featured In The Episode: Join the waitlist for Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (PGSD) - samlaurabrown.com/pgsd Take the perfectionism quiz: samlaurabrown.com/quiz Sign up for daily Perfectionist Power-Ups - samlaurabrown.com/power Follow me on Instagram @perfectionismproject Announcement: PGSD will open for enrollment on 10 September 2023 (for one week only) My 12-month group coaching program Perfectionists Getting Shit Done (aka PGSD) will teach you how to plan properly as a perfectionist and get out of your own way. Ep 414: 5 Signs You're Scared of Success
EFearing success is actually way more common than you'd think. And that's kinda crazy, right? Even though we're consciously working towards it, we unconsciously stop ourselves from getting it. It's no wonder we can feel so stuck. Fear of success means that you are scared that you'll actually be able to accomplish the things you've been thinking about… and that feels so uncertain and unfamiliar that you hold yourself back. At every level of your business, you can experience this fear of success. I'm at the level of success I'm at now and I'm still experiencing this. I have to get myself to a new self-image where I'm able to create more success and feel safe in that success. In this podcast episode, I share why we experience fear of success and my personal struggles with it. I also talk about 5 of the signs that you're scared of success and what to do about it. Fear of success might actually be the thing that's stopping you from taking those next steps in your business. Listen to this episode now. Ep 413: How I Get Myself Back On Track When I'm Overwhelmed [Real Time Personal Update]
EHave you ever been busy re-writting something you've already written? Do you feel like you have you fallen behind with things and feel like you're off track? This is exactly what was happening for me at the time I recorded this episode. What I share in this episode is exactly what I would say to my coach or if I were to call Renae and talk it out with her. But instead I decided to pull out my podcast microphone… I was in the thick of feeling overwhelmed and overworking. I found myself re-working the scripts for the 5-Part Planning Series over and over again. And that's a sign to me that I'm getting in my own way and I'm off track. I felt the pressure feeling like I just need to do it "right", I felt rushed and impatient. In this energy I know pushing through these feelings wasn't going to work. Tune in to hear the discussions I have with myself to so that I can get out of my own way and back on track with recording the 5-Part Planning Series. I hope that this episode helps you when you are in one of these moments to not add a layer of shame... It's so easy for us to have thoughts like "I shouldn't be getting in my own way because I know better than this." I'm sure we'd love to always be on top of our work, knowing everything is moving in the right direction. But… Of course we are going to get in our own way and of course we are going to get off track - no matter how smart we are. This is apart of being human. So don't make yourself wrong, don't feel ashamed for it. I want to invite you into the possibility that it's normal for this to happen and nothing has gone wrong it's just a matter of calmly getting yourself back on track. Tune into this episode to hear how I work through getting myself out of my own way and back on track. Find the full episode transcript and show notes at samlaurabrown.com/episode413. Ep 409: The Practical Steps To Get Out Of A Business Slump And How To Power Plan With A Full-Time Job
EWe all have blindspots that we would never think to bring up to our 1:1 coach. But when we listen to others being coached, we can uncover hidden areas of our perfectionism and productivity that might have otherwise gone unnoticed, until it's too late. In this episode you'll hear Sam coach two PGSDer's. First Sam coaches Shoipei who's was in a dip at the time of this coaching call. We all go through dips and slumps in our business, it's apart of the journey. It can be so easy to say "get comfortable with being uncomfortable" but when you're actually in the dip it's much harder to see it from an intellectual perspective. The dips can serve as one of the best teachers to help us let go of the self-judgment and shame that we carry within ourselves. You'll be able to consider how you can structure your week as Sam coaches Samara. A lot of us are in a situation that is good and we are wanting to elevate to a new level. This actually takes a lot of courage to leave a good situation to create a great one. It's easy to justify going from a horrible situation to a good one because no one wants to be in a horrible situation. The growth goal allows us to have a catalyst for change without needing to put ourselves in a desperate situation where it feels like we have our back against the wall in order to achieve. Tune in now to also hear Sam explain how to set your Growth Goal at the best level for you. Ep 408: My Growth Goal Quarterly Review For Quarter 2 2023 ($80,914 Revenue)
EIt's uncommon to hear detailed information about the breakdown of expenses in businesses. I hope by me openly sharing the numbers and providing insight into my business on a quarterly basis, it helps you to be growth minded and to not have your perfectionism handbrake on. And it's especially uncommon to hear a detailed breakdown when the quarter didn't go to plan. We made $80,914 in revenue but after expenses we actually had a significant loss in Q2, 2023. It's so easy to interpret things that happen in our business in a way that makes us feel inadequate or incompetent. We can be in a habit of dismissing what is working and complicate things so that we can feel busy and deserving. I'm excited for you to listen to this episode because you'll hear how I interpreted Q2's financial loss without attaching any negative meaning to it and making it mean anything about myself and my abilities. I've made significant progress with my perfectionism so I'm wanting to share these insights with you incase you've been feeling behind, thinking you should have everything figured out by now and always be succeeding. Our brains can convince us that the best way to create success is to put pressure on ourselves. Personally, I used to believe that if I didn't put pressure on myself, I would be settling for less than what I'm capable of achieving. However, the pain I experienced during my last launch of Q2 made me realise the detrimental effects of putting pressure on myself. In hindsight I can see that I was spending too much time doing things that essentially was busy work and sacrificed valuable time with my family. This has caused me to look at whats going on and notice where my mind was at so that I can make the changes in order to feel how I want to in my day to day life and create the kind of business I want. In hindsight, how much pressure have you been putting on yourself? By listening to this episode, you'll gain valuable insights into reframing your mindset and approaching challenging situations with resilience and self-compassion. It's an opportunity to shift your perspective and embrace a growth mindset, regardless of external circumstances. I hope by hearing me sharing the numbers, how I'm interpreting them, why it's not a problem that we had a loss this quarter and why it doesn't mean anything about me it can help release any weight you might have had on your shoulders. In This Episode You'll Learn: How I interpret and handle financial losses in my business How putting pressure on myself had a ripple effect on the decisions I made and the end outcome financially of our Q2 results. Ep 407: 3 Unexpected Reasons My Latest Launch Completely Failed (PGSD Launch Debrief)
EThe entrepreneurship space can be so glamorised, we hear alot about people doubling their business year after year and that can leave us feeling behind if we aren't experiencing that trajectory of growth. I enjoy being very open and sharing what most people aren't willing to share and this episode is no different. I take you behind the scenes of our most recent launch sharing the 3 unexpected reasons why this launch completely failed and all of the launch numbers. Regardless of the type of business you have, this episode is relevant for you because at some point, no matter what guidance you're receiving, if you're putting yourself out there and trying new things, you will face failure. It's important to know how to approach failure and be emotionally regulated in those moments so that you don't make the failure mean something about you and then repeat the same mistakes because you were too ashamed to actually take a look objectively at what went on, in a really compassionate way. Failure doesn't make you a failure. It doesn't mean you don't know how to run a business. Look at all the big startups – they often don't break even for years. Even though we intellectually understand this, if your launches feel like a rollercoaster, you might be attaching your self-worth to the outcomes. I love hearing podcasts like this because it's the real stuff and everyone goes through it so I hope you enjoy listening to the episode! Ep 406: 7 Signs Your Follow Through Problem Is Actually A Planning Problem (best of the podcast)
EI recently sent out a Perfectionist Power-Up that resonated with a lot of my email subscribers. It said: "Maybe your follow through problem is actually a planning problem". So I wanted to record an episode to help you figure out whether this is what's going on for you. There are a lot of things we can do to help us follow through with our plans consistently. I share many of them on this podcast! But first it's incredibly important to look at the plans you're trying to follow through on. Are they making your perfectionist mindset work for you or against you? Are your plans setting you up for success or are they setting you up for failure? I dive into this and more in the episode.
