I've made it abundantly clear that my no. 1 favorite film of the year is Emerald Fennell's directorial debut "Promising Young Woman." Having seen the film a year ago at Sundance, it stayed at my no. 1 slot all year long and now, it even finds itself in the Oscar conversation. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has had a huge rise within the film industry over the past few years. "Herself" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim for Clare Dunn's lead performance and her screenplay. However, there have been other notable elements which have flown under the radar since its premiere, including the direction by Phyllida Lloyd and the performances from the rest of the ensemble. You probably know cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle for his Oscar winning work with director Danny Boyle on "Slumdog Millionaire," or their other collaborations on "28 Days Later" & "127 Hours." He has also worked with Lars Von Trier, Ron Howard, Angelina Jolie and his latest collaboration has been with Marjane Satrapi, on her biopic of Marie Curie (played by Rosamund Pike) titled "Radioactive." It's been over a year since the premiere at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival but now, the dark-indie comedy "The Climb," was finally released in theaters this weekend through Sony Pictures Classics. The film tracks the toxic friendship between the two over the course of many years in long and elaborately staged sequences. Michael Angelo Covino and Kyle Marvin co-wrote the script and star in the movie together with Covino serving as director.
