"Respect"
This week, Josh Parham & guest Kathia Woods join me for our main podcast review of the Aretha Franklin Biopic "Respect" starring Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans & Marc Maron. What did we think of the film's approach to telling the life story of the Queen of Soul? How did we feel about the performances, notably Jennifer Hudson, who was hand-picked by Franklin herself to play her? We discuss all of these topics and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Interview With "Free Guy" Production Designer, Ethan Tobman
After what has felt like a forever-long delay from its initial release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 20th Century Studios is finally releasing "Free Guy" in theaters this weekend starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Joe Keery & Taika Waititi. It's been called "The Truman Show" for a new generation, and the result is an enthusiastic, fun, and surprisingly thoughtful social commentary on free will and the imaginary worlds we create for ourselves outside of the real one. That fictional world in this film is "Free City," which required creative world-building and ingenuity to bring to life on the big screen. Production Designer Ethan Tobman was kind enough to discuss his work on the film with us, which you can listen to below. Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... "American Hustle"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture We are down to the final two podcasts in our 2013 retrospective. Next up is David O. Russell's hotly contested Best Picture nominee "American Hustle," starring Amy Adams, Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper. Receiving positive reviews, strong box-office, and 10 Academy Award nominations at the time of its release (including all four of its main actors), the film has always had a divisive reaction amongst those in the industry and the online community, which continues to this day. Eight years later, what do we think of the film today? Has the story held up? What about the performances? How do we feel about O. Russell's stylistic attempts to mimic Martin Scorsese? We discuss all of these elements and more in this messy review for an equally messy movie. Joining me for this review, I have Amanda Spears, Michael Schwartz, Casey Lee Clark, Zoe Rose Bryant, and guest Ryan C. Showers. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Interviews With The Production Designer & Cinematographer For "The Green Knight"
There's no denying that David Lowery's A24 fantasy epic "The Green Knight" is one of the most visually stunning achievements of 2021. Every design element had to be meticulously planned, constructed, and executed to bring the Arthurian legend to the screen. Two of the people most instrumental in that process were Production Designer Jade Healy and Cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo. Both were kind enough to spend a few moments with me discussing their work on the film, their collaborations with Lowery, and what they have coming up next. If you've seen the film, you know this is a conversation worth listening to! Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... This week, Bianca Garner, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat join me for our main podcast review of James Gunn's "The Suicide Squad," starring Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Daniela Melchior & Peter Capaldi. "Nebraska"
With only three 2013 retrospective podcast reviews remaining, we now come to Alexander Payne's Best Picture nominee, "Nebraska." A lovely, easy-going, straightforward film that resonated with many upon its release, the film went on to earn six Academy Award nominations. How does it hold up today? What did we think of the story, the pacing, black and white cinematography, performances, and more? Tune in below to find out and enjoy! "The Green Knight"
This week, Sara Clements, Casey Lee Clark & Dan Bayer join me for our second podcast review of the newest film from filmmaker David Lowery, "The Green Knight," starring Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton & Sean Harris. The fantasy epic has divided audiences and united critics with its meditative and beautiful approach to the Arthurian poem it is based on. Filled with symbolism and no easy answers to its challenging questions about its themes, we have many interpretations of this new work of art from Lowery. As a result, this is a spoiler-filled discussion, so please don't listen if you have not already seen the movie. What did we think of the story, the craftsmanship, performances, and the many themes the film is working with? Tune in below to listen to us help each other sort our thoughts, and enjoy! "Jungle Cruise"
This week, Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer join me for our main podcast review of the newest Disney film, "Jungle Cruise" starring Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt. Based on the Disney theme park ride of the same name, the film is borrowing many elements from "Pirates Of The Caribbean," "The Mummy," "The African Queen," and many others to craft a new action-adventure franchise. Does it sink or swim? Tune in below to find out what we thought of the story, characters, visual effects, and of course, the many puns from Captain Frank Wolff. Enjoy! Interview With "Nine Days" Director/Writer, Edson Oda

After numerous release delays, the Independent Spirit Award nominee is now playing in theaters from Sony Pictures Classics and will be expanding to more theaters on August 6th. Edson was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about the origins of the film's unique concept, working with Winston Duke, his belief in pre-existence, and more! It's a fascinating interview for one of the most equally fascinating films of the year. Do not miss this one! Take a listen down below and enjoy! "Gravity"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Today is a big one. We're reviewing Alfonso Cuarón's technical masterpiece "Gravity," starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. A visual stunner upon its release, the film begged to be seen on the biggest screen possible (and in 3D) with its groundbreaking cinematography and visual effects. The story deeply resonated with audiences, too, bringing in a ton of box office and seven Academy Award wins, including Cuarón's first Best Director win. What do we think of it all of these years later? How does it hold up watching it at home as opposed to in the theater? What did we think of the story, the performances, and the craft on display? Interview With "Pig" & "Old" Star, Alex Wolff
Alex Wolff is one of the most exciting young actors working today. Never attempting to repeat himself, he has two movies currently playing in theaters ("Pig" and "Old") with vastly different performances in each of them. At age 23, the New York-based actor and musician has already impressed us with performances in movies such as "Hereditary," "Patriot's Day," and "Bad Education." That trend is only continuing with his latest performances. Alex was kind enough to talk with us about both projects, his experience working with M. Night Shyamalan, Nicolas Cage, and more! Night Shyamalan, "Old," starring Gael García Bernal, Vicky Krieps, Alex Wolff, Eliza Scanlen & Thomasin McKenzie. A filmmaker with his own highly unique sensibilities, M. Night Shyamalan has polarized critics and audiences for years, and his latest film is no exception. What did we think of the story, the characters, the twist (we do discuss spoilers at the end), cinematography, direction, and writing? Interview With "Ailey" Director, Jamila Wignot
Premiering earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and screening later at the Tribeca Film Festival, NEON's latest documentary "Ailey" has garnered overwhelmingly positive critical praise for its look at one of the most influential dancers of all time, Alvin Ailey. As a former dancer myself, it was very meaningful for me to watch a documentary tell Ailey's life story, and getting the chance to speak with director Jamila Wignot about how she brought that to the screen was an immense joy. Please tune in to our conversation below, where we discuss Ailey's importance in dance culture, his legacy, and more! Enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Arriving in theaters and on HBO Max 25 years after the original "Space Jam," the film incorporates the Looney Tunes characters, Basketball superstar LeBron James, and other Warner Bros. owned intellectual properties in a way that has sparked a ton of criticism and discussion over its manipulating use of nostalgia and the corporate intentions behind the film's very existence.
