Alex Garland's psychological horror film, "Men," has been polarizing audiences since its release this past weekend from A24. Following the success of the 2019 film "Downton Abbey," the cast returned for a sequel, penned once again by series creator Julian Fellowes, titled "Downton Abbey: A New Era," which was just released in theaters this weekend. "On The Count Of Three" had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, where a lot of people were wondering who would be daring enough to pick up the film, which dealt with a highly sensitive subject matter, blending dark comedy with the heartwarming drama between two best friends who make a pact to kill themselves on the same day. Screenwriters Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch had a difficult tight rope to walk when communicating the themes of their story and the humanity of their characters without rubbing audiences the wrong way. The overall positive critical reception to the film suggests they struck the balance just right. "Pleasure" premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, and within the opening moments, everyone who was watching it knew it was going to be a tough sell. An uncompromising look at the porn industry with many graphic sex scenes, it is a testament to writer and director Ninja Thyberg that the movie works as well as it does. With no judgment being placed on its protagonist (played brilliantly and fearlessly by Sofia Kappel), the film is a psychological character study that showcases both the good and ugly side of a business many have pre-conceived ill notions of. "Pachinko" premiered on Apple TV+ on March 25th and has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed series of 2022, resulting in a renewal for a second season which will come in 2023. The series is based on a novel of the same name by author and journalist Min Jin Lee. It tells the generational story of a Korean family who immigrates to Japan from various perspectives in different timelines and languages. "Navalny" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the overall Festival Favorite Award. One couldn't have guessed how a month later, the film would prove to be more timely than ever when Russia waged war on Ukraine. The documentary tells the story of the rise of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the plot to assassinate him by the Kremlin. Though Navalny is currently behind bars, the documentary has resonated with all those who have seen it. "Charlotte" had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and is now receiving a limited release starting this weekend in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada before slowly rolling out to other markets. The film tells the true story of artist Charlotte Salomon, a German-Jewish artist born in Berlin who hid from the Nazis during World War II before being tragically murdered at Auschwitz in 1943. Years later, her paintings gained international recognition, and now her story is being told in animation form by directors Eric Warin and Tahir Rana. The 27th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up in New York a few weeks ago, and as always, the Film at Lincoln Center did a fantastic job with their programming, talks, and events. The acclaimed festival highlights the best of what contemporary French filmmaking has to offer, with many great artists from across the sea attending in-person, including Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Mathieu Almaric, Emmanuel Carrère, Emilie Carpentier, Vincent Maël Cardona, and Leyla Bouzid. One of the great auteur filmmakers of our time is Jacques Audiard, who brought his film "Prais, 13th District" to the festival after its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film is a fascinating exploration of casual sex and relationships set in modern-day Paris, seen through the eyes of complex adults starring Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Jehnny Beth & Noémie Merlant.
