The Next Best Theatre Podcast: Episode 46 - Our Nomination Predictions For The 2022 Tony Awards

After what feels like an eternity since the pandemic changed the face of the American theatre scene, we can officially say Broadway is back as Nicole Ackman, Cody Dericks, Lauren LaMagna, and I go through a whole season of shows eligible for this year's Tony Award Nominations. The announcement for the nominations will occur on May 9th, and for this episode, we all come together to give our thoughts on what will be nominated and what might miss out. Please give this full-length episode a listen, and if you like what you hear, you can subscribe to our Patreon for our other non-Tony-specific episodes throughout the year. We'll be back post-nominations at the beginning of June to give our final predictions on the winners with another episode following the big show on June 12th (which we recently found out will be hosted by recent Oscar-winner Arianna DeBose) to discuss the fallout of the 75th annual Tony Awards. Interview With "Hatching" Director, Hannah Bergholm

"Hatching" had its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival as a part of its Midnight Section and is now being released by IFC Midnight this weekend in limited release. The coming-of-age horror film boasts some incredibly gruesome practical creature effects, which harkens back to horror films of the 70s and 80s with an outstanding dual performance from the film's breakout star, Siiri Solalinna. Director Hannah Bergholm was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the film's story, Siiri's performance, the film's special effects, and more. Please take a listen down below and check out the film in theaters this weekend or when it goes on-demand on May 17th. Thank you. Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... "Skyfall"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective continues with one of the biggest films from that year. Sam Mendes' "Skyfall" was a game-changer for the James Bond franchise critically, financially, and awards-wise. Heralded for its cinematography, focus on character, score, and iconic James Bond theme by multi-award-winning artist Adele, the film is often regarded as one of the finest James Bond films and one of the finest films of 2012. What do we think of it ten years later? Do the action scenes hold up for us? What about the story? How do we feel about the performances by Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, and Judi Dench? We discuss all of this plus the film's awards season run and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review down below. Joining me for this podcast retrospective review I have Sara Clements, Josh Parham, Zoe Rose Bryant & Patreon guest Ben Sears. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you! Interview With "Navalny" Director, Daniel Roher

"Navalny" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary and the overall Festival Favorite Award. One couldn't have guessed how a month later, the film would prove to be more timely than ever when Russia waged war on Ukraine. The documentary tells the story of the rise of Russian opposition leader Alexey Navalny and the plot to assassinate him by the Kremlin. Though Navalny is currently behind bars, the documentary has resonated with all those who have seen it. Director Daniel Roher was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about the impact his film is having on audiences, if he fears for his own safety after making the documentary, what went into capturing that shocking phone call between Navalny and his assassins. We discuss all of this and more in our podcast, which you can listen to down below. The film had its premiere this past Sunday on CNN & will be available on HBO Max starting May 26th. Enjoy! Interview With "The Northman" Director/Co-Writer, Robert Eggers

"The Northman" is the third feature film from director Robert Eggers ("The Witch" &"The Lighthouse"), and like his two previous films, it's an unforgettably immersive experience due to the meticulous amounts of research that went into the project with a gripping revenge story steeped in themes we're familiar with. Eggers set out to make the definitive Viking film, and he's done just that with his latest. The director was kind enough to speak with me for a few minutes about what it was like working with a higher budget than his last two films, what the most fun day on set was, his collaboration with Alexander Skarsgård, what he has planned next and more. Please take a listen down below, enjoy and check out the film on the biggest screen you possibly can, now playing from Focus Features! Thank you. Interview With "The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent" Director/Writer Tom Gormican & Writer Kevin Etten

"The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent," which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate, is not only a showcase role for Nicolas Cage but also a tribute to the Academy Award-winning actor. Anyone who is a fan will be won over by the film's humor, action, and fearlessness with how much Nicolas Cage throws himself into playing an exaggerated version of himself alongside a hilarious Pedro Pascal. The duo's fantastic chemistry might win over even critics and skeptics. Director/Writer Tom Gormican and co-writer Kevin Etten were kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with me about their newest film, how they managed to convince Nicolas Cage to come on board, what it was like working with Pedro Pascal, which movies would they program for a Nicolas Cage Film Festival and more! "Charlotte" had its world premiere at last year's Toronto International Film Festival and is now receiving a limited release starting this weekend in New York, Los Angeles, and Canada before slowly rolling out to other markets. Years later, her paintings gained international recognition, and now her story is being told in animation form by directors Eric Warin and Tahir Rana. "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore"

For our main podcast review this week, I am joined by Josh Parham, Tom O'Brien & guest Amanda Guaraggi. Today, we're discussing the newest film in the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise titled, "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore," starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Mads Mikkelsen, and a bunch of others. This franchise has gotten off to a rocky start and hasn't been helped by the actions of many involved, both behind and in front of the camera, in their personal lives. Was this an improvement on the last film? Does it come close to recapturing the magic of the original "Harry Potter" films? What did we think of the acting, crafts, writing, and do we believe the franchise will be able to close out with the planned fourth and fifth installments? "Zero Dark Thirty"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture As promised at the conclusion of the 2021 awards season, we have our first of ten NBP Podcast reviews for our 2012 retrospective, which will be running from now until the end of the summer. That first film is Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to her Oscar-winning film "The Hurt Locker," titled "Zero Dark Thirty," which saw her re-team with Academy Award-winning screenwriter Mark Boal. With a large ensemble cast led by Jessica Chastain, Bigelow's film ignited a ton of controversy upon its release, making for one of the most spectacular rises and falls in awards season history. What do we think of the film ten years later? We discuss the direction, writing, editing, Chastain's performance, and more in our review. Interview With "Paris, 13th District" Director, Jacques Audiard & Star, Lucie Zhang

The 27th edition of Rendez-Vous with French Cinema wrapped up in New York a few weeks ago, and as always, the Film at Lincoln Center did a fantastic job with their programming, talks, and events. The acclaimed festival highlights the best of what contemporary French filmmaking has to offer, with many great artists from across the sea attending in-person, including Claire Denis, Arnaud Desplechin, Mathieu Almaric, Emmanuel Carrère, Emilie Carpentier, Vincent Maël Cardona, and Leyla Bouzid. One of the great auteur filmmakers of our time is Jacques Audiard, who brought his film "Prais, 13th District" to the festival after its world premiere at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. The film is a fascinating exploration of casual sex and relationships set in modern-day Paris, seen through the eyes of complex adults starring Lucie Zhang, Makita Samba, Jehnny Beth & Noémie Merlant. Audiard and Zhang were kind enough to talk with me about the film, their work together, and what they plan to do next. "The Piano"

THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Academy Award-winner Jane Campion is set to have a big weekend as her latest film, "The Power Of The Dog," is heading into Oscar Sunday with a leading twelve nominations, and many are expecting the New Zealand-born director to win her first Oscar for Best Director. However, back in 1993, she made a huge splash with her beautifully haunting film "The Piano," starring Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neill & Anna Paquin. Becoming the first woman ever to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, the film would also earn two additional Academy Awards for Best Actress (Holly Hunter) and Best Supporting Actress (Anna Paquin, who was only eleven at the time). What did we think of the film, revisiting it all of these years later? What did we think of the themes, characters, music, cinematography, and its awards season run? Nicole Ackman, Casey Lee Clark & Danilo Castro join me to discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. Interview With "The Outfit" Director/Writer, Graham Moore

Graham Moore is a name you may remember from 2014 when he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Imitation Game." Now, he's back, and this time he's writing and stepping behind the camera for the first time with his directorial debut "The Outfit," starring Mark Rylance, Zoey Deutch, Johnny Flynn, Dylan O'Brien, Nikki Amuka-Bird & Simon Russell Beale. A sophisticated single location crime thriller with more than enough twists to fill ten movies, the film opens in theaters from Focus Features this weekend. Jessica Chastain has been a powerhouse both in front and behind the camera as an actress and producer since she exploded onto the film scene with her breakout year in 2011, which resulted in her first Oscar nomination for "The Help." A decade later, here she is now, with her third Oscar nomination, this time for Best Actress in a film she produced and developed for ten years, "The Eyes Of Tammy Faye." Following her Screen Actors Guild win for Best Actress (and as of today, Critics Choice winner now as well), Jessica was kind enough to take the time to talk with me about her career, how it feels like it's culminated in this moment of recognition for her, her thoughts on the current status of female-led stories in the industry today, working with her co-star Andrew Garfield, and more! "The Batman"

For our main podcast review this week, Eve O'Dea, Josh Parham, Daniel Howat, Cody Dericks & guest Johnny Sobczak all join me to discuss one of the most anticipated films of 2022: "The Batman" starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis & Colin Farrell. Directed by Matt Reeves, this epic 176-minute long neo-noir plunges audiences into the dark world of Gotham City, only two years into Bruce Wayne's tenure as the crime-fighting vigilante known as Batman. It's a grounded and seriously dark take on the character, one that is separated from the rest of the DCEU and really focuses on his skills as a detective. What did we think of Reeves' vision for the character, the film's crafts, the performances by the cast, and its awards potential? We discuss all of these points and more in our review down below. "Death On The Nile"

For our main podcast review this week, Ema Sasic, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Daniel Howat joined me to discuss Kenneth Branagh's "Death On The Nile" starring Kenneth Branagh, Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders & Letitia Wright.
