Interview With "See How They Run" Director, Tom George
"See How They Run" is one of the more impressive directorial debuts from 2022. Director Tom George and screenwriter Mark Chappell are a match made in heaven as they take the "Whodunnit" genre and flip it on its head with a tribute to the work of Agatha Christie that is a deceptively modern, meta, and vastly entertaining murder mystery in its own right. Tom was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about his work on the film, working with the cast, crafting a compelling murder mystery in 2022, and more. Interview With "God's Country" Director/Writer, Jullian Higgins
"God's Country" had its world premiere at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive notices for its direction, writing, and lead performance from Emmy Award-winning actress Thandiwe Newton ("Westworld"). Director and co-writer Jullian Higgins was kind enough to spend some time talking with me about the film's themes, working with Thandiwe, and more. We hope you will check out the film, which is opening in theaters this weekend, and take a listen down below. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Interview With "Speak No Evil" Director/Writer, Christian Tafdrup
"Speak No Evil" had its world premiere, digitally, at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it shocked and terrified audiences with its dark humor, which grows more sinister and more threatening until the cringe comedy is completely erased, and all that is left is stomach-churning horror. One of the stand-out films from the festival, it's been playing in limited release in New York and Los Angeles but will now be available to stream on Shudder starting September 16th. Director and writer Christian Tafdrup was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about the film (both without spoilers and with indicated spoilers for those who do not wish to know where this twisted film goes). We hope you will check out the film (if you can handle it) and take a listen down below. Enjoy, and thank you! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... "Barbarian"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer, and together we do our best to avoid spoilers and talk about one of the best horror films of the year, Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård & Justin Long. Go into this one as blind as humanly possible, then come back and listen to our review, which we recorded minutes after watching it in the theater. We hope you enjoy it. Thank you! Episode 310 - The 2022 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals & Final TIFF Preview
For Episode 310, I am joined by Tom O'Brien, Dan Bayer, and guest Jorge Don Birnham. This is an interesting podcast because this is a series of conversations conducted over the Labor Day weekend while I was at the Telluride Film Festival with Jorge. He and I bookend the podcast with our drives to and coming from Telluride. In between, I talk with Tom on two separate occasions about his experience at the Venice Film Festival and chat one last time with Dan about what we're looking forward to seeing at the Toronto International Film Festival this week. Apologies for the audio quality, as I did not have my microphone for any of these conversations, but I hope you enjoy them either way. Thank you! Interviews With "Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul" Stars Regina Hall, Sterling K. Brown, and Producer/Director/Writer Adamma Ebo & Co-Producer Adanne Ebo
"Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received good notices for Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown's satirical performances as a husband and wife team running a modern-day evangelical church. The two of them were kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with us, followed by another brief conversation with the film's director, writer, and producer, Adamma Ebo, and her co-producer (and sister) Adanne Ebo. We hope you take a listen down below and check out the film, now playing in theaters and streaming on Peacock from Focus Features. Thank you, and enjoy! "Three Thousand Years Of Longing"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Amy Smith, Josh Parham & Daniel Howat. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from director George Miller, "Three Thousand Years Of Longing," starring Tilda Swinton & Idris Elba. The film premiered out of competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival and is following up the biggest success of his career with the critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning "Mad Max: Fury Road." It's the kind of film a filmmaker as visionary as Miller could only make after the success of his previous film because it's one hell of a big swing, filled with fantastical imagery and lots of flashbacks in a sprawling love story commenting on the nature of storytelling. What did we think of the story, performances, and technical aspects? Tune in below to find out. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Interview With "Breaking" Director & Writer, Abi Damaris Corbin
"Breaking" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received strong notices for the performances by the cast, John Bodega, Nicole Beharie, and the late Michael K. Williams. Director Abi Damaris Corbin and her co-writer, Kwame Kwei-Armah, sought to tell the tragic true story of former veteran Brian Brown-Easley and looked at many other tension-filled, single-location thrillers to capture the anxiety and drama of such a high-stake situation. Abi was kind enough to spend some time talking about what drew her to the story, working with the cast, her inspirations, and what she took away from the experience of making her first feature-length film. We hope you take a listen down below and check out the film, now playing in theaters from Bleecker Street. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... The Next Best Series Podcast - Interview With Emmy-Nominated "The Dropout" Director, Francesca Gregorini
"The Dropout" was one of the most talked-about shows of the year with its mesmerizing, transformative performance from Amanda Seyfried in the lead role of Elizabeth Holmes. One of the standout episodes from the show was episode 6, "Iron Sisters." The director of that episode, Francesca Gregorini, is nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the year's Primetime Emmy awards, making her the only female nominated in the category. She was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about her episode, working with Seyfried, how she feels about her Emmy nomination, and of course, what's to come next for her in the future. "Beast"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from director Baltasar Kormákur, "Beast," starring Idris Elba, Iyana Halley, Leah Sava Jeffries & Sharlto Copley. In what will forever be known as "that movie where Idris Elba punches a lion in the face," does the popcorn man vs. beast action film rise above its b-movie thrills to deliver anything of substance? Or does it not need to? Tune in below to find out as we discuss the story, performances, writing, and bloody lion action. Thank you, and enjoy! The Next Best Series Podcast - Interview With Emmy-Nominated "Succession" Composer, Nicholas Britell
The music of "Succession" has become one of the most iconic in modern television. Having already won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for the first season, composer Nicholas Britell is nominated this year for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) for the third season (he was also previously nominated for season two). Having exploded in popularity in recent years due to his frequent collaborations with Barry Jenkins, Adam McKay, and now with the success of "Succession" (which has been nominated for and already won a ton of Emmys), Britell is one of the most sought after composers working in television and film today. He was kind enough to take a few moments from his busy schedule to discuss his work on his nominated episode "Chiantishire," what his thought process is behind the show's most iconic themes and how he develops them, what he plans for the show's fourth season and much more! The Next Best Series Podcast - Interview With "Station Eleven" Emmy-Nominee, Himesh Patel
No other show this past television season felt as pertinent as "Station Eleven," considering it's a miniseries about a pandemic and was in the middle of shooting when its production was forced to pause due to the actual COVID-19 pandemic. The HBO Max miniseries is now nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Himesh Patel. Himesh was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about what it was like working on the show, how he felt about his Emmy nomination, what it was like becoming a father during production, his feelings towards his leading role in Danny Boyle's "Yesterday" and if he would like to one day tackle the iconic role of James Bond. "Lincoln"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2012 retrospective is coming to an end this month. Our second to last throwback podcast review is Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook & Tommy Lee Jones. Written by Tony Kushner, the film was a perfect merger of writer, actor, and director coming together to present an iconic figure in American history but finding ways to humanize him and showcase the most important period of his life rather than telling us a traditional biopic. The film received 12 Oscar nominations and won 2, including a third historic Best Actor win for Daniel Day-Lewis. How does the film hold up a decade later? Tune in as we discuss the screenplay, acting by the enormous ensemble, Spielberg's craftsmanship, and more. Joining me for this review, I have Nicole Ackman, Josh Parham, Sara Clements, Dan Bayer & Danilo Castro. "Bullet Train"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Ema Sasic, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer. Together, we're reviewing the latest film from director David Leitch, "Bullet Train," starring Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon, Benito A Martínez Ocasio & Sandra Bullock. A non-stop action thrill ride traveling at 275 mph, this wild film has a ton of star power and style. What did we think of it? Is it a new action cult classic in the making or just a Quentin Tarantino knockoff? Join us as we discuss the writing, performances, action set pieces, humor, and more in our review, which you can listen to down below. Thank you, and enjoy! Interview With "I Love My Dad" Star, Patton Oswalt
"I Love My Dad" had its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW), where it won the Best Narrative Feature Competition jury prize and audience awards. The feature directorial debut of James Morosini (who also starred in and wrote the film) tells an unbelievably cringey true story about James' relationship with his father, played by Grammy and Emmy Award-winning actor Patton Oswalt. Patton was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about his character, working with Moronsini on his first feature, how he loves independent filmmaking, and more! Interviews With "Bodies Bodies Bodies" Director, Halina Reijn & Star, Chase Sui Wonders
"Bodies Bodies Bodies" had its world premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW), where it received positive reviews and reactions for its dark humor, the scathing social commentary of Gen Z, and performances from the cast. Director Halina Reijn and actress Chase Sui Wonders were kind enough to spend some time talking about their work on the film with me. We discussed the screenplay, what it was like shooting in a pitch black giant house, filmmaking inspirations, aspirations, and much more! The Next Best Series Podcast - Interview With "Barry" Emmy Nominee, Anthony Carrigan
"Barry" has become one of the must-watch shows on television. With each season growing in its dark intensity, one character viewers have latched onto as a fan favorite is the hilarious NoHo Hank, played brilliantly by Emmy Award-nominee Anthony Carrigan. Carrigan had the opportunity to show new sides of the beloved character this year, resulting in some of the best reviews of his career and a second nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He was kind enough to spend a few minutes chatting with me about his work on the HBO show this year, what he was reacting to behind that prison wall in the season finale, working with Bill Hader, and more. Interview With "Not Okay" Director/Writer, Quinn Shephard
Actress turned writer, and director Quinn Shephard made her feature directorial debut in 2017 with the release of "Blame." Now, here she is five years later with her follow-up film, which has a wider platform (the film is currently streaming on Hulu), a bigger cast, and budget. "Not Okay" tells the satirical story of a wannabe influencer and writer who is a compulsive liar, piggybacking off of the trauma of others, all in an attempt to go viral. The unlikable lead character is brought to vivid life by Zoey Deutch. Quinn was kind enough to spend a few moments talking about the film's main character, where the idea for the movie came from, discovering 2022's breakout star Mia Isaac and more. "A Love Song" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival and played again at the Berlin and Tribeca Film Festivals. Director and writer Max Walker-Silverman was kind enough to discuss his feature directorial debut with us, where he went into detail on the challenges of making his first film, working with two screen-acting experts, how the Colorado Mountains setting played an essential role in the story and more. Interview With "Nope" Composer, Michael Abels
Composer Michael Abels has had a fruitful collaboration with Academy Award-winner Jordan Peele, having created the scores for all three of his films, "Get Out," "Us," and now, "Nope." Each has been released to critical acclaim, but "Nope" may be the composer's most ambitious work yet, combining elements from the horror, sci-fi, and western genres to create a soundscape that is unshakable as it leaves a lasting impact on you as you walk out of the theater. Michael was kind enough to return to the podcast (we previously interviewed him for "Us") to talk about his work on the film, working with Peele, what he has coming up next (an opera!?), and more!
