"Creed III" recently opened in theaters to the franchise's best box office opening and is continuing the "Creed" franchise in new and unexpected ways. One of those fresh approaches was through the film's cinematography. Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, brought on "Creed II" director of photography Kramer Morgenthau to execute his vision for the third and most ambitious film in the franchise yet. That ambition came from the decision to shoot the boxing scenes using IMAX cameras, a first for any sports film, and depict the action in a style that resembled anime. Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was one of 2022's largest and most ambitious films. It's fair to say it split everyone who saw it down the middle with their opinions. "The Sea Beast" dropped on Netflix over the summer to positive reviews but very little recognition from awards voting bodies until we got to the Annie Awards. Director Antoine Fuqua and Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Richardson were kind enough to recently spend some time talking with us about their work together on "Emancipation." The film tells the true story of a runaway slave named Peter (Will Smith) who escaped his plantation in the 1860s and fought his way to freedom. With unique color grading and striking images influenced by the photography from the time period, the film can currently be seen on Apple TV+.
