"Gangs Of New York"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture For this month's second throwback podcast review, I was joined by Lauren LaMagna, Danilo Castro, and Isaiah Washington to discuss the first collaboration between Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and Academy Award-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio in "Gangs Of New York" to help us get ready for the release of their latest piece of work together in "Killers Of The Flower Moon." Starring an all-star cast with DiCaprio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Cameron Diaz, Jim Broadbent, John C. Reilly, Brendan Gleeson, Henry Thomas & Liam Neeson, production delays plagued Scorsese passion project, including clashes with the studio. It all led to a finished product that was high on ambition but messy in its execution. There are many bright spots to be found, including Daniel Day-Lewis' iconic performance as Bill The Butcher, the staggering production design, and the story's themes. What do we think of it, though, over two decades later? Tune in as we discuss these elements, the screenplay, DiCaprio's performance, his chemistry with Cameron Diaz, the film's awards season run, and more. Thank you, and enjoy! Interview With "Cassandro" Director/Writer Roger Ross Williams
"Cassandro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for Gael García Bernal's lead performance. Academy Award-winning documentarian director Roger Ross Williams ("Life Animated") made his narrative feature debut with this film and also received warm notices for his direction of an openly gay wrestler in the world of Lucha Libre wrestling. Ross Williams was kind enough to spend a few minutes talking with us about his work on the film, moving from making shorts and documentaries into narrative features, collaborating with García Bernal and global superstar Bad Bunny, and more. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the film, which is now available to stream on Prime Video. Thank you, and enjoy! "Dumb Money"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Lauren Cohen, Josh Parham & Dan Bayer to discuss the latest film from Craig Gillespie, "Dumb Money" starring Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Vincent D'Onofrio, America Ferrera, Nick Offerman, Anthony Ramos, Sebastian Stan, Shailene Woodley & Seth Rogen. Telling the 2021 story of the Gamestop short squeeze, which rocked Wall Street and made a lot of people fifty rich in the process, the film had its world premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews but what did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the performances, Gillespie's direction, how well the film explains its complex financial premise, and how it compares to other films such as "The Social Network," "Moneyball," "The Big Short" and more. Interviews With "Flora And Son" Director/Writer John Carney & Composer/Songwriter Gary Clark
"Flora And Son" had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its breakout performance by Eve Hewson, the songwriting, and for giving the expected but welcome warm feelings a John Carney film can provide. The film recently screened again at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its limited theatrical release and global launch on Apple TV+. Director and writer John Carney and his composer/songwriter Gary Clark were kind enough to each spend some time talking about their work on the film. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the new indie musical film, which is now playing in select theaters and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on September 29th. Thank you, and enjoy! "Mean Streets"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture For this month's first throwback podcast review, I was joined by Giovanni Lago, Danilo Castro, and guest Larry Fried to discuss the first collaboration between Academy Award-winning director Martin Scorsese and Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro in "Mean Streets" to help us get ready for the release of their latest piece of work together in "Killers Of The Flower Moon." Shot on a small budget with very few resources, the movie may not have been the official feature directorial debut for Scorsese, but it would be the film that would put him on the map and lay the foundation for much of the greatness that would come after for both him and De Niro. Also starring Harvey Keitel in one of his best roles, David Proval, Amy Robinson, Victor Argo, Richard Romanus & David Carradine, the film is very much a snapshot of 1970s style filmmaking as much as it is a personal look at small-time crime in the streets of Little Italy New York from Scorsese's perspective. What did we think of it fifty years later? Tune in as we discuss the story, the performances, the themes, and scrappy filmmaking, which led to some innovative choices that helped give the film its original identity at the time of its release and more in our review. We also go over the polls, give our reactions to the trailers for "The Boy And The Heron," "Nyad," "The Bikeriders," "Origin," and "The Burial," answer your fan-submitted questions and more! "A Haunting In Venice"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Giovanni Lago & Brendan Hodges to discuss the latest film from Kenneth Branagh, his third Agatha Christie adaptation, "A Haunting In Venice" starring Branagh, Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Camille Cotton, Jude Hill & Riccardo Scmarcio. With a gothic horror twist on the whodunnit genre, Branagh reprises his role as Hercule Poirot for a third time, but after the mixed to negative reactions to "Murder On The Orient Express" and "Death On The Nile," what did we think of this latest one from the Academy Award-winning filmmaker? Tune in as we discuss the themes, ensemble, visual aesthetics, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! A Behind The Scenes Look At "A Haunting In Venice"
"A Haunting In Venice" is now playing in theaters and marks the third Agatha Christie adaptation by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, who returns for the third time as the world's greatest detective, Hercule Poirot. With an all-star cast that includes Tina Fey, Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Dornan, Kelly Reilly, Camille Cotton, Jude Hill & Riccardo Scmarcio, the film cleverly takes Christie's 1969 novel "Hallowe'en Party" and gives it enough fresh twists to help it stand out from "Murder On The Orient Express" and "Death On The Nile." Below, you will find a series of interviews conducted with some of the film's crew, including Academy Award-winning composer Hildur Guđnadóttir, production designer John Paul Kelly, cinematographer Haris Zambarloukos and the CEO of the Agatha Christie Estate, the great-grandson of Agatha Christie and Executive Producer James Pritchard. Please take a moment to listen to these interviews and check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from 20th Century Studios. Thank you, and enjoy! Episode 359 - The 2023 Telluride Film Festival, Venice Begins & Final TIFF Preview
For Episode 359, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and guest Jorge Don Birnam. As per tradition, Jorge and I recorded our conversations on our way to the Telluride Film Festival in the car and coming home from the festival. In between our conversations about the lineup and the Oscar contenders that emerged from the Labor Day weekend festival, I connected with Josh Parham at the Venice International Film Festival to tell me what his experience has been like and also with Dan Bayer, who told me what he's looking forward to at this year's Toronto International Film Festival. Apologies for the audio quality, as I did not have my regular set up for any of these conversations, but I hope you enjoy them either way. "The Equalizer 3"
For this week's main podcast review, I was joined by Dan Bayer just a day before I left for the Telluride Film Festival to record so we would have something for you all to listen to today. We're reviewing the latest film from filmmaker Antoine Fuqua, "The Equalizer 3," starring Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, David Denman, Sonia Ammar & Remo Girone. The third and final film in Fuqua and Washington's violent, action-packed justice trilogy loosely based on the television show of the same name, the third outing finds Robert McCall trying to enjoy his retirement in Italy when trouble comes knocking on his door yet again. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the violence, action, performance from Denzel Washington, and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy! "The Artist"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective has come to an end. Our final review is Michel Hazanavicius' "The Artist," starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller, Malcolm McDowell, Missi Pyle, Beth Grant, Ed Lauter, Joel Murray, Ken Davitian & John Goodman. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and it went on one of the most unlikely award season runs we've ever seen. Suddenly, in 2011, everyone was charmed and transported back to the age of silent film and fell in love with this movie. Does it hold up 12 years later? Tune in as Nadia Dalimonte, Sara Clements, Alyssa Christian & Daniel Howat, and I discuss the film's story, performances, its faithful recreation of the silent film era, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support throughout this entire retrospective, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," "The Descendants," "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" & "Hugo." Co-written alongside Rachel Sennott, the "Shiva Baby" pair reunite for this female-driven high school sex comedy that combines "Mean Girls" with "Fight Club" to form a hilarious, violent, and memorable film that will likely gain cult status in a short period of time. "Hugo"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective is almost at an end. Our second to last review is Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" based on Brian Selznick's 2007 book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret," starring Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ray Winstone, Emily Mortimer & Jude Law. The movie found unexpected ways to pay homage to cinema's past while incorporating 3D technology from cinema's present to give audiences a cinematic experience, unlike anything they had seen before from Scorsese until that point in his career. How does this family film aimed at children and adults hold up today? Take a trip to the moon with Lauren LaMagna, Dan Bayer, Daniel Howat, Will Mavity, and me as we discuss the film's story, themes, performances, crafts, awards season run, and more in our review. Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! A Behind The Scenes Look At "Bottoms"
"Bottoms" had its world premiere at the South By Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival earlier this year and received positive reviews for its outrageous premise, raunchy humor, unpredictability, and chemistry between the film's stars, Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri. Following the success of "Shiva Baby," Emma Seligman's second directed feature film expands upon her first in nearly every conceivable way while retaining her unique voice and giving rise to women's stories in unexpected genres and situations. Seligman was kind enough to spend some time talking with Ema Sasic, while Stunt Coordinator Devon McNair and Cinematographer Maria Rusche spoke with Dan Bayer about their involvement in making the film. Please take a moment to listen to the interviews and check out the film, which is opening in limited release this weekend from Orion Pictures before expanding next weekend. Thank you, and enjoy! Interview With "House Of The Dragon" Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt
"House Of The Dragon" is one of television's most visually lush films today. Carrying over the same visual style of "Game Of Thrones" while allowing for subtle differences from each new DP who works on the series, the show has amassed acclaim for its highly cinematic look and overall quality. Catherine Goldschmidt was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Series (One Hour) for her work on Episode 8 of Season 1, "The Lord Of The Tides" (and also received a nomination from the American Society Of Cinematographers for the same episode) and was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the episode after she received her first Emmy nomination. Please take a listen and be sure to check out the show, which is now streaming on Max and has been nominated for nine Emmy awards. Thank you, and enjoy! "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One"
For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Sara Clements, Brendan Hodges, Danilo Castro & Isaiah Washington. Today, we're discussing the latest film in the "Mission: Impossible" franchise, Christopher McQuarrie's "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" starring Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham & Henry Czerny. With an all-star cast led by one of the industry's last bonafide movie stars, tons of death-defying practical stunts, and gorgeous locations worldwide, the "Mission: Impossible" franchise continues to grow and build with its most ambitious film to date. How does it compare to its predecessors in the franchise? What did we think of the story, action set pieces, comedy, and pacing? Please tune in for our SPOILER-FILLED review as we discuss these points and more. We hope you'll enjoy our podcast, should you choose to listen to it. Thank you! "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo"
THIS IS A PREVIEW PODCAST. NOT THE FULL REVIEW. Please check out the full podcast review on our Patreon Page by subscribing over at - https://www.patreon.com/NextBestPicture Our 2011 retrospective continues this summer with David Fincher's American remake of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen & Joely Richardson. Based on the based selling crime novel by Stieg Larsson, the book had already been made into a popular Swedish foreign language film in 2009. The film's dark tone, violent subject matter, and changes from the source material continue to be a point of contention. Join Lauren LaMagna, Nadia Dalimonte, Lauren Cohen, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and me as we discuss these topics, the film's performances, score, direction, awards season run, and more! Thank you for all your support, and enjoy! Also, be sure to check out our other 2011 retrospective reviews for "War Horse," "The Help," "The Iron Lady," "Midnight In Paris," "The Tree Of Life," "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," "Moneyball," & "The Descendants."
