"Oppenheimer" has been the toast of the 2023-2024 awards season, receiving a leading total of thirteen Academy Award nominations and winning (as of this writing) the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture. Christopher Nolan's latest masterpiece is a technical behemoth where every department worked at the top of their game to bring J. Robert Oppenheimer's story to life on the largest scale possible, impressively shot in IMAX. The Next Best Picture team was fortunate to speak with many of the Oscar-nominated craft members throughout this awards season. First, we have my interview with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, followed by Brendan Hodges' interview with the film's editor, Jennifer Lame, and sound designer, Richard King. Then we have Will Mavity's interview with makeup and hairstylist Luisa Abel. "The Holdovers" had its world premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim, with many claiming it to be Alexander Payne's best film since "Sideways." The film reunites him with that 2004 film's star Paul Giamatti in a role that has earned him Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor, while his co-star Da'Vine Joy Randolph has received the same nominations with both winning prizes from the National Board Of Review. The film also introduces the world to Dominic Sessa in his first film role, for which he's won a few breakout prizes this awards season and is nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. Giamatti and the film's editor, Kevin Tent, were kind enough to spend time talking with me while Joy Randolph and Sessa spoke with Daniel Howat. "Maestro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It is the second film to be directed by Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper following "A Star Is Born" and features him and Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan transforming into Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The two were kind enough to spend a little bit of time talking with me about their work on the film, and I also got the chance to speak with the film's Costume Designer, Academy Award-winner Mark Bridges. Legendary filmmaker Michael Mann examines the life of Enzo Ferrari in 1957 when his life, both professionally and personally, was on the brink of collapse. "The Color Purple" adapts the stage musical for the big screen with one of the best ensemble casts of the year. "All Of Us Strangers" had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, where it received universally positive reviews for its beautifully intimate story of a middle-aged gay man reconciling with the past trauma of losing his parents at a young age, all trying to form a new connection with his neighbor in a mostly empty high-rise apartment building. The Next Best Picture team conducted a series of interviews from the time of its world premiere, through its screening at the New York Film Festival, all the way up until its theatrical release with several people involved in making the film. First, we have Dan Bayer's interview with director and writer Andrew Haigh, followed by my interview with the film's composer, Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch. We then hear Ema Sasic's interview with actress Claire Foy and Bayer's interview with star Andrew Scott. Then we return to me again for my interview with cinematographer Jamie D.
