"Young Woman And The Sea" was released in theaters for a limited theatrical run earlier this year and is now widely available to be streamed on Disney+. Scoring some of the highest test scores in the studio's history, the inspirational true story of Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle is backed by a rousing, gorgeous score by English composer Amelia Warner. A few days after watching the film in theaters and being so captivated by the score, I tracked down Warner to speak with her about what I consider to be one of the year's best film scores. She was very gracious with her time, diving into her inspirations, working with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, her opinions on the current landscape of film scoring, and more. “Made In England: The Films Of Powell And Pressburger” had its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year, where it received rave reviews for delving into the films and careers of two of the greatest storytellers the medium as ever known: Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. From “Black Narcissus” to “The Red Shoes,” to “A Matter of Life and Death,” to “The Tales of Hoffmann,” their collaboration inspired a generation and is still revered for their daring artistry to this day. "Firebrand" had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it received solid reviews for its telling of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), Queen of England, and the wife and widow of Henry VIII (Jude Law). Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz ("The Invisible Life Of Euridice Gusmao") made his first film in the English language with this adaptation of the 2013 novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle, with an emphasis on the costumes, the production design, and the perspective of Parr. Jharrel Jerome made Emmy history when he won television's top prize for his work in Ava DuVernay's "When They See Us." Just 21 years old, Jerome became the youngest person to win Lead Actor in a Limited Series and the first Afro-Latino actor to be nominated for and win an Emmy in any category.
