"John Wick: Chapter 4" has received the best reviews, audience reactions, and box office of the "John Wick" franchise. It makes it all the more impressive when you consider the latest film is nearly three hours long and could've gone wrong in so many ways in its final edit. Nathan Orloff ("Ghostbusters: Afterlife"), an openly gay film editor, brought a unique perspective to the "John Wick" franchise, which is known for its hyper-masculine themes and characters. His ability to connect with the material and understand the nuances of the action sequences made him an essential collaborator with director Chad Stahelski. "Creed III" recently opened in theaters to the franchise's best box office opening and is continuing the "Creed" franchise in new and unexpected ways. One of those fresh approaches was through the film's cinematography. Michael B. Jordan, in his directorial debut, brought on "Creed II" director of photography Kramer Morgenthau to execute his vision for the third and most ambitious film in the franchise yet. That ambition came from the decision to shoot the boxing scenes using IMAX cameras, a first for any sports film, and depict the action in a style that resembled anime. Damien Chazelle's "Babylon" was one of 2022's largest and most ambitious films. It's fair to say it split everyone who saw it down the middle with their opinions. But an area most could agree on was the film's technical craft. Two frequent Chazelle collaborators, composer Justin Hurwitz and costume designer Mary Zophres were kind enough to spend some time going in-depth on their work for Chazelle's latest. "The Sea Beast" dropped on Netflix over the summer to positive reviews but very little recognition from awards voting bodies until we got to the Annie Awards. Afterward, it was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. This is one of the year's best animated feature films with an epic scope, beautiful animation, and excellent voice acting. "A House Made Of Splinters" had its world premiere at last year's Sundance Film Festival, where it mostly went under the radar for many despite receiving positive reviews. There were questions about its awards eligibility this year, given it did not have a U.S. distributor for the longest time. Still, it went on to receive nominations from various documentary awards voting bodies and even earned a Spirit Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature. Now, the film has been nominated for Best Documentary Feature at this year's Academy Awards, and many are starting to take notice of this delicate, harrowing, and essential piece of work which focuses on orphaned children in a war-torn Ukraine. Roger Deakins is one of the all-time great cinematographers. The recipient of two Academy Awards for his work on "Blade Runner 2049" and "1917," he has given us timeless images and visual masterpieces ranging from "The Shawshank Redemption" to "Skyfall." His latest work on "Empire Of Light" reunites him with director Sam Mendes for a fourth time, and he received his sixteenth Oscar nomination for the film a few weeks ago.
