The Power of Goals that Matter
At 29, Michael Nelson started his first company. The dotcom bubble set him back, but he learned from the experience and started another company, TLC Tech. Now a 7-figure success, TLC Tech is thriving for one reason, according to Michael. He developed goals, reviewed them regularly, and built in accountability. Michael used his goal-achieving system to take his company and his life to new highs. Lucky for us, he has written a book and coaches on Goals that Matter, to help others apply the tools he used. In this episode, Mark and Michael dive into the transformative power of goals supported by a habit of reviewing them with an accountability partner and they relate some of their insightful and inspiring personal stories of challenge and success.

Kate Cordell, the founder of Opeeka, has been working in the mental illness and research space her entire career. Smart Plates: License to Thrill
“The day I took my first dollar. I was 100% in, and I promised myself that I would never stop until this was successful based on the money that was taken. Cannabis Entrepreneurship: a Growth Opportunity
In this episode, Mark has a fascinating discussion with the dynamic and talented Ross Haley about entrepreneurship in the Cannabis space. Ross shares a little about his journey that includes growing up in a Northern California community of cannabis growers, to an early job selling Kirby vacuums, to tremendous success via the sale of his company, General Hydroponics, to Scott’s Miracle Gro (SMG) for $130M in 2015. Ross is now CEO of Lbs. Distribution, a B2B company focused on the cannabis supply chain. Along with the typical challenges of company building such as hiring the right people and optimizing operations, Ross talks about the obstacles he continues to overcome in an industry that is still considered illegal by the Federal government. There are a lot of business and life lessons to be learned from Ross in this episode including key takeaways to “stay in the game” and “never give up.”
Growth Factory: Power of With....
Nobody builds a truly great company alone. This “Markism” has been the driving force behind the work at HaneyBiz over the last many years and is now serving as the guiding light for a new venture called the Growth Factory that Mark and the team are launching. The Growth Factory is a nonprofit startup accelerator and an accompanying early-stage venture fund with a mission to build an entrepreneurial engine that scales high-growth companies and catalyzes innovation in the Greater Sacramento region. In this episode, Mark is joined by his cofounders, Rick Spencer and Monique Brown. They share how the Growth Factory is being designed to accelerate 100 local founders with world-class potential over the next 4 years and why now is the time to make this happen in Sacramento. If you are an investor, successful executive or entrepreneur, civic leader, citizen, a customer of, or advocate for local startups, listen in to learn more about how you can get involved!
Winning: It's OK to be Great!
Scott Drummond, President, and Founder of Party Center Software has a winning mindset, a successful track record, a passion for entrepreneurship, and a desire to pay it forward. His entrepreneurial career effectively started with the launch of a web design firm in 1998 (pre-Google) when he was just 1 year out of high school! In 2005, Drummond and his wife purchased a small indoor children’s play center called Bounceopolis, Inc. in El Dorado Hills and later they expanded and moved it to a new location in Folsom. Through operating Bounceopolis he realized that there was no viable online event booking and management tool for the Family Entertainment Center (FEC) industry. This led to the creation of Party Center Software, an online point-of-sale and event management software for the FEC industry. Drummond sold Party Center Software in 2019 to a PE firm Aquiline Capital Partners LLC and continues to run the company as the President and Founder. Mark and Scott cover a lot of ground in this engaging conversation as they explore how early life lessons can shape the willingness to take risks, the courage to commit to winning (and learn from losing), and the heart to mentor the next entrepreneur in line.
Founding, Failing, Funding and Exiting With Sonny Mayugba
Mark talks about founding, failing, funding and exiting companies with the amazing Sacramento entrepreneur, Sonny Mayugba, whose new adventure as VP of Growth at Swimply has him on the company building journey once again. Swimply is the world’s first marketplace for homeowners to rent out their underutilized pools to local swimmers. Prior to Swimply, Sonny spent a year in venture capital, first as a Managing Director at Jason Calacanis’ LAUNCH and next as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Spero Ventures. A serial entrepreneur, Sonny first got hooked on startups by launching Heckler, a print/digital magazine that he scaled and sold to Times Mirror when he was 25. After that, Sonny went on to start multiple companies, among them Requested, a mobile app for restaurants & bars. Requested eventually merged with restaurant delivery app Waitr, where Sonny was the founding CMO. In charge of customer acquisition, brand identity, and revenue stewardship, Sonny helped grow Waitr Holdings to $800M annual revenue, expanded into 700 cities, and rang the Nasdaq Opening Bell when the company went public as Waitr Holdings (Nasdaq:WTRH) in 2018. The Basics of Angel Investing
Originally a term used to describe investors in Broadway shows, "Angel" now refers to high-net-worth individuals who invest their own money in exchange for equity in an entrepreneurial company (unlike venture capitalists, who invest other people's money). About $24B is deployed via Angel Investors in the U.S. each year. While these investments are high risk, they can be high reward. Several reputable studies show an average return of 2.6x investment in 3.5 years. In addition to capital, many Angels, who are often experienced business leaders, also invest their time and expertise to support the founder. This model of "smart money" ie: cash + support has proven to be both effective and critical to helping very early stage businesses get off the ground. Today, I have the honor of talking with 3 local and very experienced Angels about their journeys as investors in the Sacramento region. John Peters, Michelle Hallsten, and Ken Tallo, all of whom are part of a local investment group called the Sacramento Angels, discuss the value of angel investing, why and how they got started, and some key lessons learned along the way. Creating a Better World. Lessons Learned from Tesla and Venture Funding
Can you use your mission to create a better world?I often talk about Rockstar Entrepreneurs. As far as legends go, Elon Musk is at the top of the mountain for Entrepreneurs. So, it often surprises many people to learn that he wasn’t the Founder of Tesla. In fact, he was their fourth CEO. In this episode, we meet Marc Tarpenning, co-founder of Tesla, and Venture Partner at Spero Ventures. Marc takes us through the early days of Tesla, and shares some of the key lessons on the importance of co-founders, getting feedback from investors, and how he defines success (and it is not money), including how Marc is working on making a better world by investing in companies who are aligned with his personal mission. We also talk about how COVID has introduced an opportunity for entrepreneurs to raise money and NOT be in Silicon Valley, and how to tie your mission focus with your investment pitch. Whether you want to create a world-changing company or want to know how to persevere through the difficult days of starting and scaling a business, this conversation is full of great examples and lessons learned. Why Diversity is Good for Business | Women in Leadership
With all the challenges of this year, we can tend to overlook progress. For most businesses in the US, leaders are taking a hard look at their diversity shortcomings, and why making diversity part of their strategy is good for business. As these companies outline their path, they are intentionally designing the policies and systems that will combine the collective capabilities of people from different genders, races, sexual orientation, those with disabilities, and more. In this episode, I talk with two leaders who are driving forward progress for woman in business and organizations where diversity is no longer optional. Krista Snelling, EVP, COO & CFO with Five Star Bank, and Preet Kuar, CEO of Pacific Staffing and Pacific ExecSearch. How Can Young Entrepreneurs Create a Better World?
2020 has turned into a year of crisis and hardship for many. When it seemed that we couldn’t take any more, our state was engulfed in historic wildfires. Whether we are dealing with a pandemic, social injustice, or disaster like wildfire, it can be hard for young people to imagine a world that is getting better. However, from ashes, something new can grow, if we build it right. In this episode I am excited to talk to Dr. Gina Warren about how young entrepreneurs can create a better world and specifically how she is inspiring the youth in the inner city to begin their entrepreneurial journey. Dr. Warren is a co-founder and executive director of the Neighborhood Wellness Foundation. We discuss how growing up locally in the Sacramento area inspired her to become involved with the community programs and activities she is currently supporting, and how you can help make a difference with the entrepreneurs of the future. Using an Entrepreneurial Mindset to Reframe the Discussion On Gun Ownership
Many people would say we live in difficult times. I would say we live in a time of opportunity. Change starts with your mindset, and how you apply that mindset to a problem. When most people discuss a topic like gun ownership, they feel social pressure to take a side. Unfortunately, that mindset, many times, can mean we are not talking about solutions. In this episode, I sit down with Jesse Meeker and Brandon Banks, the founders of the Placer Sporting Club. We discuss a wide range of topics relating to gun ownership in these times. Brandon spent 8 years in the Marine Corps and Jesse was a Military Police Officer while serving in the U.S. Army, as well as a civilian police officer in Arizona. They share how their military backgrounds helped them develop their business and the opportunities they see for responsible gun ownership, training and community involvement. Positive change starts with a conversation. I hope this conversation helps our community see opportunity, where others see problems.
