Ep 67Transforming Negative Habits into Personal Growth: The Empowering Benefits of Journaling | Kristy Olinger
In this episode of "The Life Shift Podcast," Kristy Olinger discusses the importance of reflecting on our habits and questioning whether they are serving us well."It's this idea that when you don't have control over your waking hours, and if any listeners have young kids, you know that you don't have control over your waking hours when they're awake, you try to take some of that control back by staying up late and, and being able to spend time the way you want to.” She shares her experience with "revenge bedtime procrastination," a habit many parents of young children can relate to. Kristy realized this habit was not serving her well and decided to establish a consistent bedtime and start journaling as strategies for successful habit change. Then, she experienced a "lightning bulb" moment and changed her habit overnight.Journaling helped her reflect on who she is and what she wants and get herself off autopilot. Kristy emphasizes that sometimes our subconscious works against us, and we must actively work to overcome bad habits. She also highlights the empowering benefits of journaling and how it can help us take ownership of our lives and make intentional choices about our habits. Overall, the episode encourages listeners to reflect on their habits, make deliberate choices, and use journaling as a tool for personal growth and empowerment.Kristy Olinger is a development consultant focused on workplace communication. This week on The Life Shift Podcast, MC McDonald shares her journey of overcoming trauma, navigating grief and family relationships, and finding success."I think if we can think about trauma and, and that point of healing as possible, then we can, we can enter into the healing process with a lot more hope than with this understanding that if you have trauma, that means you are somehow like marred or broken or, you know." - MC McDonald.MC grew up in a small town with a big Catholic family. After a family member’s death, MC's world turned upside down, and she struggled to cope with the loss. Larry's experiences taught him valuable lessons about the importance of mental health and seeking help when needed.“If you're walking down the street and there's a pebble on the ground, and you pick up the pebble, and you put it right here up against your eye. It looks like a boulder. You're never gonna get around it. But if you take that same pebble and you put it out at arm's length and then you look at it, you're like, well, it's just a pebble. I could get around that thing”Larry's mother's battle with cancer instilled a level of fight and battle in him. BONUS: Celebrating the Women Who Shaped Me: A Special Mother's Day Episode
bonusIn this bonus Mother's Day episode of The Life Shift Podcast, I share a small portion of a letter that my dad wrote to me. The letter reflects on the life of my mother, Joan Gilhooly, who was a kind woman with a big heart. My mother tragically passed away at the young age of 32 while on a cross-country motorcycle trip with her boyfriend. This event turned my life upside down and forced me to experience grief and loss at a young age.I reflect on how my mother's passing impacted my life and how it led me to seek out mother figures in my life. The most significant mother figure in my life was my grandmother, who I became very close to after my mother's passing. I share how my grandmother, born in 1933, had a difficult childhood where she lost her mother at the age of two. She understood what it was like for a child to grow up without a mother and wanted to make sure that I didn't have to go through the same thing. We spent a lot of time together, went on trips, and had a very special relationship.I also talk about how I was able to say goodbye to my grandmother before she passed away. I share how I forced a conversation with her in which we said everything that we ever needed to say to each other. I left that conversation knowing that there was nothing left unsaid and that I was at peace with our relationship. When my grandmother passed away, I was by her side, and although it was devastating, I felt a calmness to it. I knew that she believed she was going to heaven and would be reunited with my mother, who was her best friend. This episode serves as a tribute to the two women who inspired the creation of The Life Shift Podcast and, hopefully, reminds us of the importance of cherishing the relationships we have with our loved ones. My story is a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, we can find deep and meaningful connections with others that can help us through difficult times.Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!Mentioned in this episode:Thank you to Ear Worthy - Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Awardshttps://podnews.net/press-release/ear-worthy-awards-2024This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy Mentioned in this episode:Available Now: "still HERE: True Stories of the Moments That Changed Everything"This episode is brought to you by *still HERE: True Stories of the Moments That Changed Everything* by Matt Gilhooly. In this episode, Ryan Berman shares his inspirational journey of self-discovery through writing a book and pursuing courageous ideas in business.“Like when you first tiptoe into that world, you have your own idea of what, like a powerful entrepreneur is gonna be like until you know, something about the word COURAGE resonates with them, and he comes up and has lunch with me. And so, like you, you realize that you're not that different. And I think that was big, you know, in my own mind, I was putting space between who I was and this pedestal of who other people are. But his journey to success wasn't always easy. As a creative in San Diego, he found himself struggling to balance his passion for creativity with the demands of leadership in management. Ep 56Leaving the Mormon Church and Finding a New Purpose in Life | Brian Acord
Brian Acord shares a powerful and emotional journey of leaving a high-demand religion. Growing up in Utah, surrounded by Mormons, Brian's life was deeply intertwined with the church. Everyone he knew was a church member, and he felt pressured to conform to its teachings. Brian shares his story of deepening his involvement in the church and eventually questioning its teachings, leading to his departure. After leaving the church, he felt lost and empty and found himself abandoned by former neighbors and friends who were still part of the community.“I went into a depression that lasted several years. This is even hard to explain because overnight, I lost my ward family. 350 families. None of them reached out to me. I'm living here. I see them all out my window. Every window I look. And there are people that I coached lacrosse with for eight years that I served on the Bishop Brick for years. And the high priest group leader, I served side by side with them 20-30 hours a week for 10 years. I've never heard from them since then. They live seven houses away, seven houses. I thought we were friends. I thought we had a relationship, a true relationship.”The conversation delves into the core values that drove Brian's involvement in the church, including a desire to help others and love thy neighbor. This episode offers a candid look at the complex emotions involved in leaving a religious community and finding one's identity outside of it. His journey of self-discovery is a powerful example of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of connecting with others.Brian hosts his podcast, Strangers You Know, where he aims to give his listeners a window into the lives of people from all walks of life. Ep 54Releasing Shame and Embracing Purpose through Hearing Loss | Angela Irwin
Angela's story of resilience, courage, and self-discovery is truly inspiring. In this episode, she talks about how she had to confront her childhood trauma of losing her hearing over fifteen years and how this trauma manifested in her 40s. "He would say to me, Angela, if you had a broken leg, would you just continue to walk on it? And you know, he did say that to me a number of times. Sometimes when you're in a state like, you need to sort of hear that because I was just like, all right, let's move this along. And he's like, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that's not how this works. And so that was, just really emotionally painful time working through all of that."Born with normal hearing, Angela began losing her hearing around seven and eventually went completely deaf. At 22, she received a cochlear implant, which she describes as a "second chance at life." Her experience of hearing loss and her journey to overcome the emotional and psychological trauma associated with it is a testament to her strength and determination.During the pandemic, Angela launched the Joyful Life Cochlear Implant Fund, a 501(c)3 organization that helps cochlear implant recipients access the ongoing critical technology they need to keep their hearing and remain part of the hearing world.Angela is a confidence coach and TEDx speaker, inspiring women worldwide to reprogram their self-acceptance and build lasting confidence to achieve their full potential. She has lived and traveled worldwide, including France, where she and her husband Colin have lived for 12 years. Her life story is a valuable reminder that the challenges we face don't have to stop us and can take us places we never imagined. Ep 53Our Stories Create Our Reality | Adam Coelho
Adam Coelho shares his powerful journey to mindfulness and entrepreneurship. He discusses the transformative power of mindfulness and the importance of being aware of the stories we tell ourselves. By becoming more mindful, Adam could recognize his inner critic and critical mindset, which helped him shift his life toward his true calling. "I realized I created exactly what I asked for. I said I needed to quit Google to be successful. I got what I asked for; they did it for me. They quit me. So, I got what I asked for. It turns out that's not exactly what I asked for, and if it really was, I could have done it at any moment. I could have quit any time. It turns out that wasn't really the goal." Adam's journey toward entrepreneurship was not easy, but he persevered and found opportunities to pursue his passion. Despite facing challenges, such as trying to make his entrepreneurial mindset fit into a corporate job and being frustrated with his inability to change his role at Google, Adam overcame these obstacles. He created a life that aligned with his values and aspirations. Adam's story highlights the importance of mindfulness, envisioning, and perseverance in pursuing our passions and creating the lives we want. We can create a more fulfilling and purposeful life by becoming more mindful and aware of our inner narratives.Adam Coelho (kway-yo) is the host and executive producer of The Mindful FIRE Podcast, a show about crafting a life you love and making work optional using the tools of mindfulness, envisioning, and financial independence. He's also a father, husband, entrepreneur, speaker, and facilitator. For the last 12 years, Adam has worked in sales at Google, where in addition to his core role, he's taught mindfulness, envisioning and emotional intelligence to over 2500 Googlers worldwide.Connect with Adam:Free Envisioning Guide: https://bit.ly/3kYM9NYhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/adamcoelho/Ad-free episodes released two days early and bonus episodes with past guests through Patreon. https://patreon.com/thelifeshiftpodcastOther episodes you'll enjoy:From Youth Pastor to Professional Speaker: Achieving Success Through Hard Work and Dedication | Grant BaldwinThe Butterfly Effect: How Small Decisions Lead to Unbelievable Opportunities | Josh PainterConnect with me:Instagram: www.instagram.com/thelifeshiftpodcastYouTube: https://bit.ly/thelifeshift_youtubeTwitter: www.twitter.com/thelifeshiftpodWebsite: www.thelifeshiftpodcast.comMentioned in this episode:Thank you to Ear Worthy - Ear Worthy Independent Podcast Awardshttps://podnews.net/press-release/ear-worthy-awards-2024This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy Mentioned in this episode:Available Now: "still HERE: True Stories of the Moments That Changed Everything"This episode is brought to you by *still HERE: True Stories of the Moments That Changed Everything* by Matt Gilhooly. Ep 50Facing Tomorrow: Transforming Grief into Strength and Wisdom | John Kelley
**Please note that this episode may be triggering for some listeners. Take care as you listen.**John Kelley shares his story of loss, resilience, and perseverance in this week's episode. John's story is one of tragedy and triumph, and his incredible journey inspires many. In this episode, John talks about his father's advice (“Tomorrow is not promised”), his father's untimely and sudden death, and the tragic passing of his mother.“Sometimes, he would have those mind-blowing philosophical conversations. You know, like I am because I am, and I can think; therefore, I am not like he would bring these weird things up that he's read or heard of in the past. And one of the things that he would always say was much simpler than all of that, and it was tomorrow is not promised. And he's told me that from a young age, it's something that I've always heard. It's just not something that I had understood yet, and it was in an instant when I was told he was gone; it all of a sudden was a lesson learned of Damn Tomorrow is not promised.”Here are the main takeaways from this episode: Despite the immense grief and loss John experienced, he persevered and found a way to honor his parents and build a successful career. He used the pain and suffering to fuel him and create a life of purpose and meaning. John found solace in his friendships and relationships with those around him. He leaned on them for support and guidance during his difficult times. He believes in the power of his story and how it can help others who are going through similar experiences. John Kelley is a Texas firefighter, entrepreneur, and marketing advisor. As a business major, small business owner, and marketing advisor for Beefy Marketing, he has become very familiar with entrepreneurs' daily challenges. I was good at business, but being able to feel process emotion was not a strength. I could read the room well. I didn't process things. I just, I just buried them.”Matt is an entrepreneur and corporate veteran in sales, coaching, recruiting, leadership, and sales management. He has coached high-performance individuals and Teams for 8 years with ProAdvisorCoach and has led dozens of offsite retreats and conferences. He is best known for his integrity and highly energetic and enthusiastic personality. After losing his father, Matt also faced a freak zipline accident that could have taken away his ability to work. However, he used this moment and transformed it into teaching, coaching, and speaking to teams and companies while recovering. This was a defining moment in his career, and he credits the support of his family and the preparation of his mindset for his success.Check out his life’s work on the social media channels below:Website: www.eternaloptimistpodcast.comInstagram: @EternalOptimistPodcast, @Coach_DrinkLinkedIn: Eternal Optimist Podcast, Matt DrinkhahnYouTube: The Eternal OptimistTwitter: @PodcastOptimist, @MDrinkhahnResources:Follow/Subscribe to "The Life Shift" wherever you listen to podcasts. REPLAY: Honoring Memories, Overcoming Life's Challenges: A Story of Grief, Growth And Empowerment | Matt Gilhooly
This is a REPLAY of episode 11, launched in May 2022. I wanted to share this episode again for new subscribers that have yet to hear my story and the WHY behind The Life Shift Podcast. In this episode, we flipped the script so I could tell my story. Throughout the first batch of episodes, the guests (and listeners) asked when I would tell my story. So, in this episode, my first guest, Christin Lindley, leads the conversation as I share the pivotal moments that shaped my life and eventually led to The Life Shift podcast. As a child, Matt faced his mother's sudden and unexpected death. At just 8 years old, he had to grapple with the grief and sadness that comes with such a tragedy. He was also forced to adjust to a new life in Georgia, where he had to start school as "the new kid." Despite all this, he found comfort in his grandmother's love and support. Unfortunately, she eventually got a lung cancer diagnosis, and it became clear that her time was limited. On her 82nd birthday, they had a wonderful celebration surrounded by family. During this time, they had an honest conversation about their relationship and expressed gratitude for each other. After she passed away, he took time to process his grief and come out on the other side with clarity. He realized that he had been living his life to other people's expectations, but now he could live authentically for himself. He learned that it's okay to be sad but also happy for the experiences you shared together. Grief is something you never get over, but it's important to process it to move forward in life.---Matt Gilhooly is a creator - podcaster, communicator, and educator. He is the creator, producer, editor, and host of The Life Shift Podcast. Spurred by his life-altering experiences, Matt helps others share the stories of pivotal moments that changed everything forever on The Life Shift Podcast. Matt has self-published over 10 coloring books on Amazon and released a children's book that celebrates individuality and confidence, "I Can Be Anyone: A Soul's Journey," in June 2021. Matt earned his master’s in mass communications from the University of Florida in 2022 and an MBA from the University of Central Florida in 2004. He believes that we must take time to support the people around us to achieve success. Resources:Follow "The Life Shift" on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.
