Lynda-Ross Vega #2 | Discussion w/ Jared Angaza - Know Thyself - How To Wield Your Nature & Not Let It Own You
We’ve been looking at the idea of an inherent perception style. Meaning, that you have a hard wired perception style. You will naturally experience life a certain way. The expert I brought in to discuss this is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda-Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. Their book, and my muse, is Unlock the Power of Your Perception. I discussed the concept with Lynda-Ross in the previous episode. Here I bring my brother, Jared Angaza, in to discuss this further. We accept the concept of an inherent perception style. Jared actually has twins and testifies to them having a different perception style, right out of the womb. However, we agree on the ability to understand our inherent perception style, not judge it as right or wrong, and wield it according to what will serve ourselves, others, and the situation best. Listen in to see if you agree and are game to understand and leverage your perception style. You can take a free perception style assessment at https://www.yourtalentadvantage.com/ You can now watch the full episodes on YouTube - just search for “Self Helpful with Kevin Miller” The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Lynda-Ross Vega #1 | How To Discern Objective Reality By Understanding Your Inherent Perception Style
There you are in a situation with some other people. Something happens. People react and respond differently. Later in the retelling of what happened you hear someone telling a story that is incredibly off base. Someone else chimes in with, “That’s not what happened, this is!” And you find yourself wanting to tell what really happened and you're exasperated at everyone else’s misinterpretation of what went down. The issue at hand is…we think what we experience is what really happened. It’s fact. And guess what, that’s how everyone else feels as well. If you’re solving a crime, you need to get down to what really happened. In regular life however, you’ll never prove anything and it seldom matters. Things happen and we all have an inherent Perspective Style we filter the happening through. This is how we experience the world. And it’s not fact, it’s experience. My guest and expert on this subject is Lynda-Ross Vega. Lynda-Ross spent her life in the high end business world and partnered with clinical psychologist Gary Jordan to research and create the Perception Style Theory to help individuals identify their strengths, appreciate human differences, and navigate challenges. When their book, Unlock the Power of Your Perception, came across my desk, I knew I wanted to discuss it on the show. We all naturally believe our perception of the world and events is fact, when in truth, nobody can claim fact, and if you want healthy relationships, you’ll want to hear what Lynda-Ross and I cover in this show. Peak Wellness | Understand & Mitigate Adrenal Fatigue
Welcome to the Peak Wellness episode where we seek to strengthen our bodies, our foundations, and build our lives on top of them. In this episode, Understand & Mitigate Adrenal Fatigue. The Mayo Clinic defines adrenal fatigue as, “a lay term applied to a collection of nonspecific symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, nervousness, sleep disturbances and digestive problems,” and goes on to say, “Your adrenal glands produce a variety of hormones that are essential to life.” The medical term "adrenal insufficiency" refers to inadequate production of one or more of these hormones as a result of an underlying disease or surgery.” Dr James and I unpack the concepts so you can discern if some of your issues extend beyond a mere lack of energy and into a true adrenal problem. And then of course, what to do about it. The key is...recovery. But sleep alone is not enough! The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Britt Frank #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin - 9 Paradigm Changing Points On Anxiety & Trauma
This is my wrap up on this series on anxiety, though running parallel with it was the topic of trauma. My muse and resident expert was Britt Frank, a survivor of much trauma and trial. Britt is a renowned therapist and author of The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward. She turns our perspective on anxiety upside down, and gives us a fresh look at what trauma is and how to come to a reckoning with it. In episode three I brought on past guest, Britt’s friend and associate, and one of New York City’s most in demand relationship therapists, Vienna Pharaon, author of The Origins of You: How Breaking Family Patterns Can Liberate the Way We Live and Love. From both of these experts I’ve come away with 9 points on anxiety, and 9 points on trauma, that I’m now holding and working to learn and engage with in my own life. I’ll share them with you now. Britt Frank #3 | Discussion w/ Vienna Pharaon - Acknowledge Trauma & Give Yourself Power
We are looking at trauma not necessarily at the tragic level, but defined as, “a lasting, negative, and limiting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event.” To this degree, nobody is immune. This is my series on anxiety. I had brought Britt Frank in as my expert and we talked through the message in her book, The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia to Find Your Path Forward. This is part three in the series where I bring in a peer to discuss the topic, and I have with me Vienna Pharaon. Vienna is one of New York City’s most sought after relationship therapists, she has over 700k followers on Instagram, and I did a series with her around the message in her book, The Origins of You: How Breaking Family Patterns Can Liberate the Way We Live and Love. Vienna is who recommended Britt to me. In this discussion, actually near the latter part, I ask Vienna about giving gravity to the trauma’s in our life and she actually corrects me and says we want to acknowledge them, but not give to much weight to them and distort them. The mic drop happens when she says, ““When we acknowledge something, we fear it gives power to IT, when instead, it gives power to US.” Acknowledge, don’t distort. This was incredibly insightful. Britt Frank #2 | What Drives Her - Balancing The Gas & Brake Pedals Of Life
I’m back with neuropsychotherapist and trauma expert Britt Frank to hear what drives her. Britt is my expert for this series on anxiety, as much of the focus of her new book, The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward, is that anxiety is a good thing. It’s the body doing what it’s supposed to do. It’s us not understanding the dynamics of anxiety and the body’s natural responses that causes problems. Here more in the previous episode. This is part two with Britt where I walk with her through the key areas of life, and it’s in the mental category where she shares her focus to balance waking up in the morning and putting the gas pedal down, with also knowing when she needs to brake and downshift to manage her output, recovery, and mental state. The concept of shifting gears and the pause between has come up in multiple shows recently, so we expand on this more here. Britt Frank #1 | Anxiety Is The Body Responding Appropriately & How To Get To The Underlying Cause
We are a culture caught in a plague of anxiety. But my guest states nothing is wrong with anxiety, it’s simply our bodies responding appropriately to a threat. Anxiety is not a mental health problem, it’s simply a physical cue that allows us to know when we are out of alignment with external safety and/or internal truth. Britt Frank is a licensed neuropsychotherapist and trauma expert who is trained in IFS (Internal Family Systems) and SE (Somatic Experiencing). She is a speaker and an award-winning adjunct instructor at the University of Kansas, where she’s taught classes on ethics, addiction, and clinical social work. Her new book is our muse for this series and it’s called, The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward. I brought her to us to discuss her research on anxiety and body based feeling vs thought based therapy. You’re about to hear some paradigm shifting information that will change how you view your anxiety and get you paying attention to your bodies responses in order to better manage your mental state. Peak Wellness | Why Fit Kids Are Literally Smarter
Our guest today is Dr Daniel O’Neill, orthopedic surgeon, sports medicine doctor, and sports psychologist. Dr O’Neill is leading the charge to help our kids and his book is called Survival Of The Fit: How Physical Education Ensures Academic Achievement and a Healthy Life. Our kids are more and more sedentary. They are getting fatter and out of shape and sicker and the consequences are dire, as their brains grow and function out of the health of their bodies. Schools are doing away with physical education and activity and us parents aren’t fostering play and activity and are letting the kids sit still on screens all day. My co-host is Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and we struggle with this just as every other parent does. We want smart kids. We want resilient kids. Kids who don’t fall into depression. So what do we do? That’s what this show is about. Find Dr Daniel O’Neill at survivalofthefit.net You can now watch full episodes on YouTube! Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin - The Dark Side Of Self-Help & How To Discover The Authentic You
I’m wrapping up my four part series on Authenticity where I brought Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani on as the expert. Our muse was the message in her new book, Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. Kristina again is the cofounder of Mindvalley, a life transformation platform boasting a 20 million strong following, which has afforded her massive exposure to the personal development space and the good and bad of it. Something I have been privy to as well. I’m going to address that in this episode, and I want to also bring attention to what I feel is the number one issue around this topic of authenticity. I feel the key to being the authentic you is to discover, probably for the first time, who that actually is. And further, I’ll claim that becoming the authentic you is an ongoing process you can be evolving towards your entire life. I say can evolve to, as it’s not a given. As Robin Sharma says, and I paraphrase, you don’t live the same day over and over for 75 years and call it a life, or an evolution. We have to choose to evolve and continually discover our authentic selves. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani #3 | Discussion w/ Jared Angaza - How To Show Up As The Authentic You, First For Yourself & Then For Others
This is part three of my series on Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani, cofounder of MindValley and author of Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. This is my discussion episode and I brought back my brother, Jared Angaza, as I know him to be someone who has fervently pursued the discovery and continual alignment with his authentic self. The tagline of this Self Helpful podcast is, “elevate your personal experience and the way you show up for others”, and Jared coined it. In this show we dig further into aspects of what it means to be authentic and he brings up the aspect of before we can show up authentically for others, we need to first show up authentically for ourselves. And many of us have never known our authentic selves, and we have work to do to discover who that is. We cover a primary way to start that you can begin today. Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani #2 | What Drives Her - Happiness Is The Biggest Contributor To Health
I’m back for part two with Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani, cofounder of MindValley and author of Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. This is my What Drives You episode where I walk with Kristina through her personal Values & Habits. It’s in the category of Health & Wellness where she shares her perspective that being happy does more for her than anything else. A point I think we miss as we give all our focus to what we eat, how we sleep, and getting good sleep. She also attests to being European and drinking wine, eating chocolate and having an active lifestyle that includes kickboxing classes. Other highlights; she feels we often hide behind spiritual concepts rather than dealing with emotions. Regarding her mental state she strives to be kind with herself and to replace judgment with curiosity. In her work she wants to make sure that in whatever she’s digging for, that she also enjoys the digging itself. Wise counsel. Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani #1 | How To Be Authentically You & Still Respect Others
I continue to be enamored with this tension of being self-aware and being true to yourself, while also being sensitive to others and respecting who and how they are. We tend to fall on the side of “just being me” and being raw and unfiltered which is likely to get you ostracized, or just performing for others and being untrue to yourself and in essence being dishonest to those you care about. I’ve fallen on the latter side most of my life and just people pleased to make everyone happy, which is exhausting and leads me to just retreating from everyone. This doesn’t help me or them. My expert guest for this series is Kristina Mänd-Lakhiani You’ll likely know her as the cofounder of Mindvalley, which is billed as “the world’s most powerful life transformation platform with an ever-growing 20 million-strong following.” They boast the teaching and trainings of many of the personalities I’ve had here on my podcast. Kristina is an entrepreneur, writer, international speaker, artist, and philanthropist. She grew up in the former Soviet Union and has a tremendous story of overcoming. Today she’s based in Estonia and my muse is her new book, Becoming Flawesome: The Key to Living An Imperfectly Authentic Life. Like me, Kristina has spent decades in the personal development industry and in this episode we candidly discuss the dark side of personal growth and how it can feed our insecurities. How it can leave you feeling you are never enough and tire you out with a feeling of constant striving. Kristina has a heart for people who, like her, realize they have become a missing person in their own life.” She cites that you won’t find peace being even 95% honest and authentic if you’re still 5% fake or performing. This is a message I really wanted to dig into for myself and I believe you’ll resonate with it. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Peak Wellness | How To Make Peace With Food And Your Eating Habits
I’m continuing on with the question listeners answered about what health issue they’d most like a magic pill for, and we had so many responses about food issues. People shared they’d want help enjoying healthier food. Help not wanting to eat so much. Help losing weight. What we kick off the show with is the stark reality that food is our number one drug. And we can’t quit it. It is so much more powerful and problematic than we understand. Truthfully this episode is possibly top of the list of importance regarding our quests for better health and wellness. We want to be able to enjoy our food, not be scared of or feel guilty about it. Dr Lee Warren #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin Miller - Moving Forward When You Can't Move On
This is part 4 and the wrap up on my series on Dr Lee Warren, and the message in his book, Hope Is The First Dose: A treatment plan for recovering from trauma, tragedy and other massive things. If you feel you haven’t dealt with any big trauma, then I encourage you to listen in, as this will prepare you for when it comes into your life. Talking with Lee about the journey through the tragic loss of his son, and the deaths and loss he encounters as a brain surgeon, was sobering. Then talking with Richie Norton about the loss of his son as well, has opened my eyes to what I feel are profound truths regarding how we can deal and move forward after significant pain and loss. The key aspect is we don’t simply move on. We don’t get over it. That’s a perspective guaranteed to keep us stuck and handicap. What happened is a part of us now and we are forever different. Forever grieving to a degree. But we can still move forward to beautiful places. We can. If…we deal with it healthfully. Here are nine key things I’m working to learn from this series. Dr Lee Warren #3 | Discussion w/ Richie Norton - How To Transcend Loss & Pain By Choosing The Meaning You Give To It
I, for one, don’t enjoy talking about pain and loss. I want to just be happy. That is the hope of this show. How to transcend beyond it. Not get over it. Not to ever be the same again. But go forward wiser and stronger and with abiding joy. This is part three of my series on Dr Lee Warren and the message in his new book, Hope Is The First Dose: A treatment plan for recovering from trauma, tragedy and other massive things. My co-host for this segment is Richie Norton. I’ve had Richie on my show multiple times. He’s an influencer to influencers and the author of The Power of Starting Something Stupid and Anti-Time Management. Richie is also one of the most inspiring people I know. And I chose him for this show because, like Lee, Richie also lost a child. This show is not about losing children, but those are tragic muses to look at to see how someone could not only endure such pain and loss, but come out, well. Not unscathed. Not justifying it. As you’ll hear, Richie likens it to forever carrying something on your back. It never goes away. It either weighs you down, or you get stronger. The conversation was deep, contemplative, but with Richie, always some laughs. Go to Zocdoc.com/KEVIN and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. Then find and book a top-rated doctor today. Dr Lee Warren #2 | Values Q&A - Committing To Ideals While Having Grace You Won’t Be 100%
I’m back with Dr Lee Warren for part two in this series, and this is my Values & Habits show. Lee is a war veteran, author, podcaster, and active brain surgeon. In part one we discussed the message in his new book, “Hope Is The First Dose: A treatment plan for recovering from trauma, tragedy and other massive things,” and we led off with the story of his 19 year old son Mitch who died from multiple stab wounds in the neck, in what will forever be an unsolved mystery. Here we walk through the primary areas of life and it’s in the area of relationships where Lee talks about his values and his intent to never allow discomfort in his relationships to continue, but his commitment to get it sorted out and not end a day with possible regrets. Which sounds valiant. Then he added that he doesn't handle all that perfectly, but it's an ideal. I so appreciate that, as I feel we often have big ideals, but when we fall short, we abandon them or just feel guilty. Join us as Lee walks us through the key areas of life and the values he has and ideals he strives to walk out. With grace. Dr Lee Warren #1 | How To Recover From Loss & Pain That You Will Never Get Over
We all have trauma, pain, and disappointment that affects us. From massive, life threatening events to emotional scars to the loss of a dream. We tend to judge and minimize our pains, but a point of this episode is, if you have a pain, regardless, it just is. And you’ll never fully get over it. But it will either hamper you, or you can look at it as, “Well, that was a bummer, but how can I use it to help me?” Which is the point. Though we get on a soapbox about not justifying anything. We can find some redemption, but we aren’t going to sugarcoat that it makes up for it with a tidy little bow. My guest on this topic is Dr Lee Warren. Lee is a war veteran, author, podcaster, and active brain surgeon. He forever impacted how I view my personal faith, the first time I had him on the show for his book, I’ve Seen The End Of You, where Lee grapples with having faith in miracles while looking at someone’s brain scan and knowing the person will die. This time we’re talking about his new book, Hope Is The First Dose: A treatment plan for recovering from trauma, tragedy and other massive things. Lee is an expert here because on August 20, 2013, his nineteen-year-old son Mitch died of multiple stab wounds to the neck. Mitch’s best friend died along with him with one stab wound. Whether the knife used to kill Mitch was in his hand or someone else’s, whether he was at fault or a victim, they will never know. An unsolved murder. This could have been the end of Lee. Or, as you’ll hear, he has moved on. Not without scars. Not getting over it. But finding some redemption and he lays out how you can too. Peak Wellness | What To Do About The Threat Of Diabetes
Hello Self Helpful listeners…in this episode, What To Do About The Threat Of Diabetes. These episodes were formerly called “Functional Friday” but they will now land on random days, so we’ve renamed it simply…”Peak Wellness,” and my premise is that our health and wellness is our foundation that we build everything else on. All this self-help happens from us, from our bodies, so the more we strengthen them, the more and better we can apply new information and take action on it. In this episode…and we continue on with major health issues brought to us by listeners, and we now hit diabetes. There are some people with legit, type 1 diabetes. There are significant things they can do to minimize the symptoms. I’m joined by my Health Check co-host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and as you’ll hear him say, we are all on the spectrum of diabetes. Over half of America is now struggling with type one diabetes, and the most prevalent, type two and pre diabetes. Around minute 13 we get into the relevance of a ketogenic diet, and around minute 30 we discuss how the average family pursuing health is still missing it and at risk. This is info that as an individual, and as a parent, I wish I’d known long ago, but am so grateful I do now. Jake Eagle #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin Miller - 7 Keys To Cultivate Being Present & Feeling Awe
I wrap up our series on Jake Eagle and the concept of Awe. This is part four. As I looked through my show notes on the previous three episodes, seven key issues stood out to me. The highlights of understanding awe and microdosing it into our lives throughout the day so we can benefit from what Jake’s research showed, that it will help us avoid Burnout, minimize and relieve Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, and help us Find Clarity & Purpose. Jake Eagle #3 | Discussion w/ Jared Angaza - How To Live In Moments Instead Of Minutes
In this episode, we continue the discussion on Jake Eagle and the concept of AWE, and I bring on my brother, Jared Angaza, because of all the people in my life, he is one who recognizes awe. We discuss microdosing mindfulness and get deep into how we invest so much into altering our environment and circumstance, in order to alter our mental state. It would be great if we could just snap our fingers and be present, and realize a positively altered state. But most of us can’t, so we must all look at what we need to do to facilitate it. We start by discussing space and the overview effect, made famous now by William Shatner. Captain Kirk himself. He literally went into space, Jared was involved in the project, and it forever changed his view of earth and life. Most of us can’t do that, but what can we do? That’s our show. Jake Eagle #2 | Values & Habits Q&A - What To Do When Your Values Change
In this episode I’m back with Jake Eagle, co-author of THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day, and this is part 2 where I walk with him through his Values & Habits in the key areas of life. In truth, I veered away from my normal format here and we spent the majority of our time around two statements he sent me when we first connected. Here is what Jake wrote, “I am 67, semi-retired, and wrestling with the reality that my old values no longer fit this stage of my life. I find semi-retirement to be quite a challenge and have not yet sorted myself out. I imagine a conversation with me may be potentially unsettling and raise more questions than it answers. Also, after having been a therapist for thirty years, I’m rather skeptical about many forms of therapy, because when I look at how people are doing—overall—I don’t think the trajectory is very positive.” So I dive in right there, asking about his values that no longer fit, then what he sees is not working in traditional therapy. Jake Eagle #1 | How To Keep Your Joy Hydrated By Microdosing Good Feelings
I start with an analogy; The going thought is an adult should drink about a half gallon of water per day. But if you drink it all at once first thing in the morning, you’ll feel bloated, you’ll pee most of it out, and if you don’t have anymore the rest of the day you’ll be completely dehydrated by evening. You need to be drinking water throughout the day to stay well and hydrated. Now think of meditating, which at the core is an attempt to be present, center yourself, and bring about positive feelings. If you do your 5 minutes or 55 minutes in the morning, and then go about the grind for the rest of the day, you’ll end up depleted. Instead, or in addition to this, new research shows the vast benefit of taking just 5 or 15 seconds here and there throughout the day, to “microdose mindfulness.” This is more than just thinking of something you’re grateful for, but to stop and focus on something positive and really feel it, whether it’s something you can actually see like a mountain or a flower, or it’s something you close your eyes to envision. My guest is Jake Eagle, who along with Michael Amster recently released their book, THE POWER OF AWE: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose—In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day, where they explain the why and how of this method for a five to fifteen-second, three-step process for “micro-dosing mindfulness,” where they discovered a clinically proven way to reduce inflammation, stress, loneliness, and burnout while improving overall well-being. Just hours before our recording, Jake sent me a scientific report that published earlier that morning. But along with this focus on awe and microdosing mindfulness, I also wanted Jake on the show because this was his response to my request to have him on the show - “I am 67, semi-retired, and wrestling with the reality that my old values no longer fit this stage of my life. I find semi-retirement to be quite a challenge and have not yet sorted myself out. I imagine a conversation with me may be potentially unsettling and raise more questions than it answers. Also, after having been a therapist for thirty years, I’m rather skeptical about many forms of therapy, because when I look at how people are doing—overall—I don’t think the trajectory is very positive.” Stay tuned for a very deep and candid conversation. How To Avoid, Manage & Mitigate Musculoskeletal Aches and Pains | Functional Friday
We’re continuing our series from the question I asked Self Helpful listeners; “If you could have a magic pill to fix one health issue for yourself, what would it be?” Kent, Kristy, and Susie cited knee issues, while Tanya and Sheamus cited back issues. As with all maladies, musculoskeletal problems are on the rise. Anyone past the age of 30 is now prone to accept the norm of bodily aches and pains when they move. Younger and younger people have left physical activities they used to enjoy due to physical limitations and inability. Should this be normal? What is causing our cultural aches and pains? And what can help alleviate them? My Functional Friday co host is Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. We give most of the show to causation and around minute 40 get into treatments. Surprisingly, your best prescription may be in regards to what you are eating. Jordan Grumet #4 | 8 Lessons w/ Kevin Miller - Live Like You Are Dying To Really Live
Welcome everyone, in this episode I’m wrapping up my series on Jordan Grumet and his book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. After two discussions with Jordan and another with Tom Ziglar, discussions with some friends and some folks in my private community, I’ve been given a lot to consider. As I went through my notes I came to 8 big points. Lessons if you will, though they are only, truly lessons, if I am working to apply them. Find Meaning In What You Do Or Don’t Do It | 3 - Discussing Jordan Grumet with Tom Ziglar
In this episode of the Self Helpful show we continue the discussion on Jordan Grumet and his book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. Here I bring in Tom Ziglar to get his take on it. Tom is Zig Ziglar’s son, CEO of Ziglar, Inc, author and in demand speaker. We began discussing the change Jordan cites when people get an end of life diagnosis and the immediate shift he sees from their protective selves and stories and the transition to possibility and meaning. If you were told you just had months to live, you'd likely seek to repair relationships. We don't today, in having faith we have plenty of time, because we don't want to be that vulnerable. Which again, points back to how we primarily live to protect ourselves. Tom and I then get into Jordan's perspective on flattening or flipping Maslow's hierarchy of need and when we start with self-actualization, everything else becomes far easier, as we know what we want and why, which is much the focus of my book, What Drives You. This lands us on the necessity, if you want an abundant and inspired life, of finding meaning in what you do. When we think of deathbed regrets, we generally envision ourselves as some shriveled up old person in a hospital bed with some regrets, and in truth, I don’t think we care. That’s that person's problem and doesn’t relate to my life right now and today I want to achieve great things and have great things and enjoy my life. And we miss two profound truths that matter most. One is, you could have an accident or get a diagnosis tomorrow that make the regret right here and now. And two, and more relevant, the death bed regrets are more focused on realizing the depth and fulfillment and happiness that we missed. That we ARE missing, right now. I’m back for round two with Jordan Grumet, talking through his Values & Habits.. Jordan was an internal medicine physician who left clinical practice to devote himself to hospice care and deep conversations about life. He covers this in his book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life, which was our topic in our first show together. It was in the category of the mind and mental health where Jordan ruminated on how he's altered by his end of life patients and realizing how influenced their lives were, not by true, objective realities, but by the stories they wrote around those. This is personal intent to have control over how he interprets his life. And also how so often his patients have significant regret that they didn't live lives more authentically. They lived for the expectations of others and cultural pressures. As for other categories, he shares how seeing people literally die right before him and sensing something significant changed right there in the room, has impacted his spiritual perspective. How many of his patients regret not taking care of themselves better has influenced his own health and wellness pursuits. How he sees money as a tool and how it hurts people when they see money as a goal in and of itself. And as of late he's thinking about taking up an old hobby of collecting baseball cards because he realizes the nostalgic feeling he has around them and is giving it more value to his own inspiration. Autoimmune Issues & How To Combat & Avoid This Growing Malady | Functional Friday
Autoimmune disease is a condition arising from an abnormal immune response to a functioning body part. While it’s not the leading cause of death in America, it is one of the most costly of all maladies and is growing at an alarming rate. Symptoms can be redness, heat, pain, and swelling in one or more parts of the body. Feeling tired all the time, joint pain and stiffness, muscle aches or weakness. Skin problems such as rashes, sores, and dry or scaly skin. Shortness of breath or trouble breathing. Fever that comes and goes and more. But it can manifest into Celiac’s disease, Addison's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. I’m with my Functional Friday co-host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert and he shares more about what autoimmune issues are and how to go about dealing with it. For many of you this may be revealing that some of your issues may be attributed to autoimmune, and if you know you have it, you’ll find wise counsel here. At the end of the show Randy shares about his youngest son who has a significant autoimmune issue they have yet to resolve. Comfort Food & How To Fuel Our Mindset & Performance | 4 - Lessons from Dr Will Cole w/ Kevin Miller
We all want to feel well. We want our body to feel well and not have aches and pains that bother or limit us. Then, we want to feel well mentally. We want hope and happiness and a sharp mind that can think critically, make decisions, be creative, and just be at peace. We tend to think of what we eat only in regards to our physical wellness, and miss that what we eat is likely a primary culprit in our mental state. Why we feel anxious or doubtful and fearful. We think our mental state comes only from what we are thinking. But consider this, have you ever had a thought or seen something that made you feel nauseous? If the thought or feeling is in your brain, in your mind, then wouldn’t it make more sense that the pain and fear or disgust…whatever the negative feeling is…gave you a headache? It ached…where it happened? Then why does the feeling manifest in your gut? In your belly? Maybe to the point of you actually throwing up? Why do you have a thought and feel butterflies in your stomach instead of up in your head? This is my wrap up on Dr Will Cole and the message in his philosophical book on wellness, Gut Feelings: Healing the Shame-Fueled Relationship Between What You Eat and How You Feel. And I’m grappling with the misconceptions and realities of this whole gut/brain connection. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. How To Move From Fear Based Thinking to Opportunity Based Thinking By Considering Your Death | 1 - Jordan Grumet
Nobody wants to consider their death, but if it gave you a massive paradigm shift that catapulted your success and joy, wouldn’t you? I think you would. This is not a “live every day like your last” message, as that’s impossible. If this is your last day, you’d put off anything that wasn’t vitally important, and you just can’t do that every day, it’s not sustainable. This is different. My guest is Jordan Grumet. Jordan was an internal medicine physician who left clinical practice to devote himself to hospice care and deep conversations about life. Jordan walks with people who are given an end of life diagnosis and watches a phenomenon happen right before his eyes. Jordan says, “We are all living versions of stories, but when a person is diagnosed with a terminal illness and death becomes a near future certainty…something remarkable happens: the self-protective stories about identity, work and money crumble, leaving them with clarity about who they are, what they love and what really matters.” He then cites they become free, as there is no reason to hold up pretense and no need to protect. Their focus shifts from fear of loss toward the possibility of what can still be gained, and people focus on true desires, generally for the first time. The tragedy is they didn’t achieve this perspective, long ago in their lives. Which is why Jordan has taken his experience and written a book, Taking Stock: A Hospice Doctor's Advice on Financial Independence, Building Wealth, and Living a Regret-Free Life. He’s striving to help us leave our lives of self-protection and move to considering what is truly possible, now. Not when death is imminent and we have a short time to do what really matters. Heal Your Mind By Eating This Way | 3 - Discussing Dr Will Cole w/ Dr Randy James
Why do you think and feel the way you do? Regardless of the circumstances, some days you feel joyful, faithful, and hopeful, and some days you feel sad, worried, and hopeless. It can be frustrating and feel out of control. You may not feel you have any mental health crisis, you are just dealing with ebbing and flowing moods. So you look to inspiration and positive thoughts, which is great. However, what we so often miss - is looking at what we eat. Much of Functional Medicine looks at what we are putting in our bodies that our bodies don’t want, and what we aren’t putting in our bodies that our bodies need. Your gut isn’t just a repository for food to be digested, it is literally connected to your brain. It’s showcased when you have emotional responses and you feel it in your stomach. You really do. So think to what you are eating. If you kept a food journal, you’d very likely see a correlation between what you eat and how you feel. This is part 3 in my series on renowned doctor, Will Cole. He’s Pepper Pott’s doctor, for goodness sakes. I mean…Gwyneth Paltrow. Today I bring on my frequent co-host, Randy James, medical doctor and Functional Medicine expert, to discuss the concept in Will’s new book, Gut Feelings: Healing the Shame-Fueled Relationship Between What You Eat and How You Feel. Rest assured, this is not a soapbox on eating nothing but raw veggies and never digging into a pint, or half gallon of ice cream. But we do discuss further the connection between what we do and don’t eat, and how we feel. If you have a big day tomorrow, if you want to rock your critical thinking skills or creativity, maybe delay the ice cream or whatever, till after. As I write this, I’ve had a good, long, productive week, and I’m about to grab a burger and fries. Maybe some ice cream. And my favorite hard cider. But I’m managing my life to moderate the impact it has on me. This episode is about opportunity much more than abstinence. The Magic Health Pill We Want | Functional Friday
For all my health and wellness advocacy, the honest admission is if I could, I’d take a pill for my ailments. I have some skin issues due to the many years and untold miles of bike riding as a pro cyclist in the sun with no sun protection. I have digestive issues that I work to manage, but are always there. I occasionally have shin splint pain from running. Instead of making the effort to cure these things naturally, I’d happily take a pill that allowed me to just go on my merry way. Some of you listening have far more critical and acute issues you are dealing with. Significant chronic pain and mind numbing maladies. So I asked the Self Helpful audience, “If you could have a magic pill to fix one health issue for yourself, what would it be?” I wanted to get a pulse on the primary ailments that even our relatively healthy audience is dealing with right now. It’s just honest that in some aspects of our life, we would all like a magic pill to alleviate a problem or give us the desire we want, as you’ll hear at the top of the show as I pose the question to Randy James, my Functional Friday co host…Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert. We received so many responses. We grouped some together, but they were all so relevant we are going to go ahead and run a series to address all the issues I believe affect so many of us. In this episode, we address chronic headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and allergies. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. And they go along day after day hoping they'll get a break and find success in those challenging areas. I'm not going to tell you I can make you love the challenging categories of life as much as the ones you find great joy in. But you can significantly increase your success and find peace. How To Ditch The Anxiety of FOMO & Embrace The Peace Of JOMO | 2 - Will Cole
In today’s world where you can get alerted every second about something new, FOMO, or the fear of missing out, is something causing anxiety amongst the culture. Fear of missing out on the news because you want to be in the know, fear of missing out on a social media post or the next new show or episode on Netflix, or a new podcast posting and on and on. We want to belong, we want to be in the know, and we might miss out on something beneficial for us It’s a real thing. I’m back with Dr Will Cole, renowned Functional Medicine expert and celebrated health coach to actress Gwyneth Paltrow. His new book is called Gut Feelings: Healing the Shame-Fueled Relationship Between What You Eat and How You Feel, which was the topic of our first talk together. This is my Values & Habits episode where we walk through the key areas of life fulfillment so see how Will structures his personal life for success. It's in the category of mental health where Will brings up FOMO and ascribes to JOMO, the JOY of missing out. I'll let you hear how he breaks it down, but it is a worthy paradigm shift and something he puts great value in. In other categories, Will shares his spirituality is the lens from which he sees the world through. He's pretty introverted so is very intentional about nurturing relationships. He follows intermittent fasting, which he got flack for from a talk with Gwyneth Paltrow recently, you can hear us unpack it further. He has a weakness for organic peanut butter and Zevia soda. We end with Will sharing his love of history and how he gets lost in it for personal joy. You can ask him anything about the Mayflower and he’ll fill you in…Find Dr Will Cole at…drwillcole.com Go to Zocdoc.com/KEVIN and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. Why Your Mental State Is Sabotaging Your Fitness & How To Trust Your Gut Again | 1 - Will Cole
I just want an easy, step-by-step formula to look, feel, and perform great; Eat whole and healthy foods, exercise, and get good sleep. It should be that simple. And yet it’s not and many of you know it, as you do these things and you are not experiencing the level of health and wellness you desire. Our mental health can sabotage our efforts, and I’m not talking anything severely acute. I am open about my own struggles with anxiety, and am more and more aware how it negatively affects me, especially my gut. You’ve likely heard about the brain/gut connection, but I find few people who really give much attention to this. How can you trust your gut, that intuitive feeling, if your gut is a boiling cauldron of a mess? And most of us have a compromised gut. My guest today is Dr Will Cole. I became aware of Dr Cole through Gwyneth Paltrow, as he is her doctor and a primary provider in her Goop wellness and lifestyle brand and company. If you remember, I had Terry Real on the show months back, he is Gwyneth’s therapist and relationship expert, also part of the Goop company. Will has become the health and wellness resource for a lot of celebrities, I see his instagram showcasing him working with Leann Rimes and Drew Barrymore, but I’ve paid attention and he’s really got the chops and I respect his work a lot. He has a new book that as you’ll hear, he says is unlike anything he’s ever written. It’s called Gut Feelings: Healing the Shame-Fueled Relationship Between What You Eat and How You Feel, and it gets more into the philosophy of our wellness than just clinical, prescriptive aspects. Which to me is the foundation. Your health and wellness will ultimately be a result of your own philosophy on health and wellness. Will actually coined the term, “Shameflammation”, which I encourage you to listen into. I find that shame is a reality with most men, and one they are ignorant of and prone to avoid even looking into. You’re going to hear some paradigm shifting information here on your health and wellness. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. How To Speed Up Your Metabolism | Functional Friday
More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight or actually obese. My guest has coached and trained over 20,000 people and says around 75% of those people just need to get on a healthy eating and exercise routine and stick to it. But for the rest, they likely have a metabolic issue and unless corrected, the weight will not come off and stay off. Angelo Poli founded Metpro where he and his team specialize in this area by utilizing an algorithm based transformation engine. Angelo and Metpro work with regular folks like us, but he’s well known for working with high-profile clientele that range from Olympic Athletes, NFL MVPs, physique models, and business leaders. I had worked with Angelo and his team for quite a while so in this episode I introduced him and his research to Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine expert and my Functional Friday co-host. As you’ll hear they get into the nuances of why we are having metabolic problems, how to figure out who does, and what to do about it. You’ll hear my story in this episode as well, as I’m one who had really slowed my metabolism down. For some of you who have trouble losing weight this could be revolutionary, as it was for me. You can take the info and apply it to yourself immediately, as this is not an ad for Metpro. But if you want to check them out, go to http://metpro.co/ziglar and you can take their assessment and speak with a coach on their team for no cost or commitment. Lifestyle Design & How To Orient Your World To Be At Your Best | 4 - Lessons From Andre Sólo w/ Kevin Miller
The self-help industry is guilty of telling people they are limitless and perpetuating the concept that you can do and be anything. It’s a well meaning concept to try and help people see they are capable of more, which I agree with, but the sentiment is often a great disservice. Sure, you can go do anything and everything, but you won’t do many of those things well. You are designed for some specific things. The great news is they will fit your innate desires and abilities. Imagine taking all the animals in Africa and dumping them on the open savannah. How will they fare? The monkeys and crocodiles and hippos and pythons and parrots will soon die. Or dump them all into the trees. How will the elephants and lions and gazelles do? You get the point. Yet we as humans are expected to just be ok in all the normal structures of our environment. It doesn’t work, and most all of us spend a lot of our days in environments and circumstances that are greatly limiting us and don’t cater to our unique makeup. This is my wrap up on my series with Andre Sólo and the message in his book, "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Some of you are HSPs, as I’ve realized I am. But all of you have sensitivities. All of you. And chances are you are blind to them or are just trying to grit your teeth and plow through your life. You can. But you won’t be at your best. You’ll be doing yourself a disservice. Further, you’ll be limiting the service you can bring to others. Walk with me a minute in looking at how to better curate and design your world for your success. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. How To Manage & Leverage Your Sensitive Strengths | 3 Discussing Andre Sólo with Renée Marino
We've been unpacking issues of sensitivity. I want to again highlight that the only people who do not have sensitivities are psychopaths. So if you are not a psychopath, this show is for you. You do have some sensitivities and if you are unaware and if you don't work to manage them, they will erode you, like termites. The point here is not being a victim. Not being fragile. It's about being self-aware of your unique propensities so you can manage and leverage them. This is part 3 on the message from Andre Sólo in his new book, "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Andre is the force behind Sensitive Refuge (sensitiverefuge.com), the world’s largest website for sensitive people. In this show I invited Broadway and big screen star Renée Marino to join me and discuss this topic. Because, right after posting my first episode with Andre, Renée texted me saying, “I'm Listening to your podcast about HSP... man.. this is me 100%!!!!” I had no idea. This episode is us unpacking our realizations of not just being sensitive, but in our case, tipping over into being HSPs, highly sensitive people. But again, this isn't a handicap, unless it goes unchecked. It can be a superpower if properly leveraged. Again though, you have sensitivities, and I believe you'll hear in this episode how you can better manage them to be more at peace and get more, valuable productivity out of yourself and in the areas you are more attune to in your sensitivities. Calming Lifestyle Habits For Sensitive People | 2 Andre Sólo Q&A
In this episode I want sensitive people to hear how an HSP…highly sensitive person…curates their life to find more peace and wholeness. I was highly interested in this, as I’m new to understanding, I’m an HSP, and I’m working to reorient my life, with grace, to help me be more at peace, and from this, be more at peace with others and the world around me. I’m back with Andre Sólo, the force behind Sensitive Refuge, the world’s largest website for sensitive people, and the co-author of "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." Andre is an author, researcher, and speaker, and a recognized expert and passionate advocate for sensitive people. Here we walk through his Values & Habits and as you’ll hear, most are configured to support Andre’s sensitivities. Remember from our first talk together in the May 17 episode, Sensitive does not mean fragile, or delicate. Sensitive means; quick to detect or respond to slight changes, signals, or influences. And that means externally and internally. Spiritually Andre finds more sensitive people crave meaning from life and may be more prone to pursuits of spirituality. Similarly, they seek out deep, meaningful relationships, and Andre attests to this for himself. And while we didn't discuss it, I'm betting more sensitive people have fewer, but deeper relationships than the norm. I'll have to ask him about that. Regarding health and wellness Andre said he doesn't live up to his own values here, but seeks out Whole Foods and practices yoga. He admits he's an emotional eater. Regarding mental health he of course guards against overstimulation. This is a big aspect I'm getting from this topic, as I've always struggled with overstimulation but just gritted my teeth and figured it's my problem. While I'm not taking the concept to opt out of everything, I am more in mind to budget how much and giving myself recovery time. This and more in the episode. Healing Serious Gut & Digestive Problems | Functional Friday
Adi Arezzini was 23 years old and as you’ll hear, bloated, constipated, and only going to the bathroom once per week. This is critical digestive illness. She started researching the colon and herbs and from it found healing agents in tea, from which she started a business, Teami Blends which is sold online and also across the country in stores like Target. But this isn’t an ad for Teami Blends and it is of course not a stand alone magic bullet. Adi made other significant lifestyle changes which led her away from that harsh reality to more optimal health. I’m joined by my Functional Friday co-host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and we asked Adi about her personal health journey, the benefits of tea, and much more. In the latter part of the conversation I asked her and she provided, her top three list of what causes and helps alleviate digestive problems which may be the greatest benefit you get from this episode. Adi is offering us 20% off all her products at teamiblends.com when you use code TRUELIFE. Again, this isn’t an ad, but of interest to us. Of note, Randy is a complete tea snob and buys high end, loose leaf tea…probably consuming 5 or 6 mugs a day. After a decade of friendship, I finally wanted to test reducing my coffee intake, and started trying tea. Initially I only liked black tea, but have now developed a broader pallet. I still adore coffee but find it bothers my gut a bit, so I’m only doing it once or twice a week these days…but drinking a lot of tea. 4 Keys To Getting As Much Or More Out Of Your Second Half Of Life | 4 - Lessons from Arthur Brooks w/ Kevin Miller
My hope for you in this episode of the Self Helpful podcast, is for those of you nearing midlife, or already past it, to divest yourself of frustration you have from lacking strength in some areas of life you’ve relied on, and find great hope and inspiration and start shifting to a new strength. I’m wrapping up the series with Arthur Brooks and the message in his book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. It was a gift to talk with Arthur, then also have a discussion on the Strength To Strength message with his colleague at Harvard, Robert Waldinger. These guys are some of the top researchers on happiness and their research is profound and paradigm shifting. In this episode I give four highlights from the three episodes that I’m pondering and focused on for my own life and discussing with my friends and peers. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. If you are looking to influence people for the better, professionally or personally, I invite you to join us. Highly Sensitive People & How To Flourish In An Overwhelming World | 1 Andre Sólo
Here is my hope for this show…that a lot of you, especially those of you who like me, were unaware of your sensitivities, will find comfort and understanding in areas of your life you struggle. Introvert, extrovert, macho man, whatever you think you are. You’ll find some grace for yourself, and some equipping of how to better manage your life to find more peace and success. Sensitive does not mean fragile, or delicate. Sensitive means; quick to detect or respond to slight changes, signals, or influences. Think of it this way; a military fighter jet is incredibly sensitive to every nuance, detecting the slightest problem or change and alerting the pilot and ground crews. They cost from $60 to $130 million. A tank on the other hand does not require such sensitivity and only costs around $10 million. They both have different, valuable uses. Speaking of the military, the special forces personnel are actually trained to become highly sensitive to everything. This is my preface to informing you that while every human is on the scale of being more or less sensitive to the outside world, and to their own inner world, about 30% of you listening will tip over into being a "highly sensitive person," thought to have an increased or deeper central nervous system sensitivity to physical, emotional, or social stimuli. And friends, the kicker here is that I...am an HSP. I have been all my life, but I've masked it, grit my teeth, and just negatively judged myself for being intolerant. I’m thrilled about this message. My guest to break down the walls on this issue is Andre Sólo, the force behind Sensitive Refuge (sensitiverefuge.com), the world’s largest website for sensitive people, and Andre is the co-author of "Sensitive: The Hidden Power of the Highly Sensitive Person in a Loud, Fast, Too-Much World." I really encourage everyone to listen to this message, as I think you’ll find relevance for yourself, and others in your life. Why You Want A Great Path More Than The Final Destination | 3 - Discussing Arthur Brooks w/ Robert Waldinger
We live in a world construct based on achievements. It’s what you do that matters. What you’ve done. And we miss the daily, primary engagement of simply…what we are doing. I recently hiked four, thirteen thousand foot peaks in one day with a group of guys. I honestly don’t remember much about the peaks themselves. We’d stop, look around, grab a drink or bite to eat and adjust our packs…then move on. What we remember is the mountain goat that came up to us along the way. The clouds boiling up a mountain pass while we sat in a saddle of the mountain. The dip in a lake above tree line that was the coldest thing I’ve ever immersed myself in. Then tailgating at the end with food and drinks to recount it all. It was the journey we most enjoyed. Getting to the top is often a bit anticlimactic. This is what my guest brought to light in this episode when he cited that his focus in the second half of life has moved from, “I want to get to this place, to, I want to be on this path.”So simple and so profound. This is part 3 of my series on Arthur Brooks and his new book, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. For this discussion I brought on a co host who not only knows the message well, but is colleagues with Arthur. Arthur actually cites him in his book. It’s Robert Waldinger who I did a series on in January of 2023. Bob is a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development at Massachusetts General Hospital. His TED titled, “What makes a good life?” has over 43 million views and his book that culminates the project is, The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness. I experience Bob as an incredibly insightful person, an expert in the area of happiness and fulfillment, and just a complete joy of a human. It was great to talk with him again, but the insight you’re about to hear I feel is…life changing. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. How To Transcend The Onslaught of Negativity In Our Culture | Functional Friday
Without making a case that there is more negativity in our world today than ever, it’s simply more easily delivered to us through our constant devices. The media want our attention and if it bleeds it leads. Negativity gets more views. And on social media, I don’t know the exact stats, but I tend to see more sharing of and discussions around criticism and debate, than joy and peace. We can’t get rid of it either, all the negativity is impossible to avoid. Not long ago we went through a covid pandemic, high racial tensions, and presidential campaigns and scandals that really upped all the volatility, and just about everyone in the country, if not the planet, is citing more anxiety, uncertainty, confusion and fear than ever. We can’t live in a bubble or a cave, so we just have to learn to deal with it. This is my Functional Friday episode and I’m with my Functional Friday co-host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, and we talk about what he is seeing with patients in his clinic and how very real this issue is, and how we can minimize it...but in truth, again, the bigger issue is combating it. Interestingly what we landed on was seeking ways to lift ourselves emotionally. I think you’ll find some tangible actions you can take from this show. Authentic Drive & How To Know What You Really Want | Lessons With Kevin
I’ve had three guests on this show recently who really have me grappling with the realities of what we as humans say and think we want, and what our behavior proves we want. What you’re about to hear may shock you and make you take a step back, as it did me. I usually give you the punchline of the episode right here in the beginning, but in this case I’m not going to…just hold tight a moment and I’ll unpack it. But you and I, right now, think we want to be happy, authentic, and healthy. But our actions show that in each case, we actually want something else…more. And it’s not the same things. For each of those three issues, there is a counterfeit desire that is winning out. And to realize it is to get at the issue of significant cognitive dissonance we live in, and are suffering from. Getting aware, I believe, can give us a new lease on life. And further, if you are in business and involved with trying to offer happiness, authenticity and health to anyone, you’re about to find out what your real competition is. Come ponder and explore with me… June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. Your Work & Why To Remember Your Why Over Your What | 2 - Arthur Brooks Q&A
How many times have you been asked, “So, what do you do?” Meaning, what work do you do. A primary way we establish hierarchy in our culture. But have you ever had anyone follow and ask why you do what you do? Have you asked yourself recently? And the answer must go deeper than just for the money. If there is no meaning for you in your work beyond money, then ask what that money is for? It’s supporting something you care about, even if it’s merely food and shelter. This was brought back to my attention by Arthur Brooks who is back with me to walk and talk through his personal Values & Habits. When I asked him about his values regarding his career he spoke to his efforts to stay aware of the why of what he does as opposed to just the what. Arthur is a Harvard Professor, a columnist at The Atlantic, ridiculously in demand speaker, and author of 12 books, the most recent being the focus of my series with him, From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life. You’ll find that Arthur is a very intentional person and deeply considers all areas of his life. Spiritually he seeks where he can lift the world and not just himself. In his pursuit of health I found it interesting that he cited he’s not necessarily happy to be exercising, but it helps him be less unhappy. Interesting way to look at it. Regarding money, as his stage of life he’s eager to simplify the stuff he owns, and puts his focus on binging experiences. It’s quite an interesting journey through one of our cultures leading experts on happiness. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. The Second & Better Half Of Life & How To Transition From Innovation To Wisdom | 1 Arthur Brooks
Many of you listening to this show are at or nearing the midpoint of life. The rest of you will be there before you know it. This show is geared to blow away a myth and massive problem we live within our culture. We churn and grind away to achieve and provide...and as we age we just try to buckle down and keep it going as long as we can, or as long as we feel we have to. This is a message to say..."Whoa! Stop! You've totally got it wrong! You don't want to keep doing what you've been doing. Rather you want to evolve, graduate if you will, to a new and well earned second half of life. One where you move from learning and innovating and amassing, to...leveraging all you've learned. The former leads to burnout and grave dissatisfaction, the latter to the greatest joy and fulfillment life has to offer. My guest, researcher and expert on this topic is Arthur Brooks. Arthur went from being a professional French horn, to earning degrees online that landed him as a think tank president amongst Ivy League scholars, which you'll hear was an embarrassment to him for a while, to today being...OK, this is long...the William Henry Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School, and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School, where he teaches courses on leadership, happiness, and social entrepreneurship. He is also a columnist at The Atlantic, where he writes the popular weekly “How to Build a Life” column. Brooks is the author of 12 books, including the 2022 #1 New York Times bestseller From Strength to Strength: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half of Life, which is my focus for this series. A recent Harvard Magazine article labeled Arthur as, "The Happiness Revolutionary." Somehow between his content and his personality Arthur has become a massively influential guy who is now called on and cited by people such as Oprah, the Dalai Lama and The White House. You're about to hear him school us in how our first half of life is spent leveraging fluid knowledge, and that our brain is created for this. But around the midpoint of our life, our brain has less ability for fluid knowledge and transitions to great ability in crystallized knowledge. If you are aware of and embrace this, you will find great peace and continue progress instead of feeling you are in a race for time to keep up the initiatives and pace from the first half of life. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. If you are looking to influence people for the better, professionally or personally, I invite you to join us. How To Embrace The Athlete Inside You For Sustaining Fitness | Functional Friday
I staunchly believe perception is everything, and regarding our health and wellness and concerning the concept of exercise, there is a paradigm shift we can enact with ourselves that works wonders. The word exercise does not create positive feelings in most people. It sounds like a chore. The point is movement and we have to “exercise” because for most of us, our daily life does not require much of any utilization of our lungs and muscles and joints. But I want you to consider the term…athlete, and why you may want to strive to adopt it. This is our Functional Friday episode where we tend to our physical and mental capacity to support us in our desired goals and achievements. Here is my setup; If you join a painting class, you might share with others that you paint. But if you do it daily or weekly and keep it up for years and get proficient, when do you refer to yourself as an artist? You don’t have to do it for money to be an artist. The literal word artist is defined as, a person who produces paintings or drawings as a profession or hobby. There you go. If you produce paintings as a hobby, you are an artist. My home contains many pieces of furniture I made out of raw aspens on our land and when people see it, they often say, “I didn’t know you were an artist!” So with exercise. The definition is, a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise. I find a lot of people who engage daily in some fitness activity call themselves athletes. And I think it’s great. I was a professional athlete, as a pro cyclist. I got paid. Not much. But today I don’t have pro status or a racing license. But I ride my bike or run almost daily. I do push ups, or dips or pull ups most days. I call myself an athlete. It’s not what I do, it’s another role I’ve embraced. If you engage in a physical activity and become proficient in it…proficient, defined as competent in doing something, you can adopt the label of athlete. It’s not a chore you try to do, it’s a role you fulfill. Regarding this idea, I asked our audience on Facebook this question, “Do you think of yourself as athletic?” Over 80 comments came in that brought up some interesting issues. I truly hope it inspires you to further embrace your athletic self and from that, your long term fitness and wellness. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. If you are looking to influence people for the better, professionally or personally, I invite you to join us. The Medical & Financial Benefit Of Friendships | 4 Lessons from Laura Tremaine with Kevin Miller & Friends
I’m wrapping up my series on Laura Tremaine, host of the 10 Things To Tell You podcast and author of The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. Our focus is on friendships, but vastly elevating them from mere peripheral benefits, “if we have time.” A point I’m expounding on in this series is we don’t need friendships to survive. We need them to thrive. So if thriving is your goal, this is a vital topic. Normally on this part four episode, I briefly discuss lessons I’m learning or grappling with from the series we’ve done. Here, I take a detour. Instead of my solo commentary, I brought two dear friends into the studio with me to talk candidly about how we’d been doing friendships, the value we had been receiving, and…how we could do them better. Main focal points that surfaced were the need to protect and enhance friendships, just like we do our health and money. My friends and co-hosts are…two guys at the top of their field in just those areas, health and money. Randy James. Who you hear often as my co-host on the Functional Friday episodes. Randy is a medical doctor and functional medicine expert. People pay him out of pocket to get to the root issues of their problems and not simply prescribe a medication to a symptom. Randy and I have lived in the same town and been friends for over a decade, growing our kids together, adventuring together, and we partnered together in a business six years ago and have shared offices ever since. Some weeks we are together 5 days in a row, sharing lunch on the back deck of the office. Find him at truelifemedicine.com. My other dear friend featured in this episode is Patrick Johnson. Randy and I met Patrick together four or five years ago and found a kindred spirit in health and wellness, adventuring, family, and spiritually. Patrick is a personal, fiduciary financial counselor who works with very high net worth individuals. But Patrick goes way beyond that. He’s become a unicorn in his profession because he goes deep with clients into maximizing the overall wealth of their life, no different than Randy. Or me. Patrick was a professional river and mountain guide; seminarian; organic farmer, and he’s an author. He leads a large group of men in Colorado on epic adventures. You can find him at WellthPartner.com. We all spend a lot of time together. We live within a two mile radius of each other. We go on big adventures together. So coming together to discuss the topic of friendships just felt too legitimate to me. You’re about to hear a different start to an episode, as again, we are literally sitting side by side in my studio together, and we start off sharing a beverage together, just as we do when tailgating in the mountains after a big adventure. Props to Patrick for this tradition. He knows how to instigate inspiring environments. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit. Finding Purpose Amidst A Broken & Toxic Home | Drive With Ben Hardy
Friends, when I first started writing my new book, What Drives You, I sat down with some influential people to get their stories. I wanted to know what took them from, wherever they started, to realize the significant achievements that landed them on my show. Dr Benjamin Hardy is a favorite guest of mine, he's a prolific writer of best-selling non-fiction in the self-help space because he's a great writer, of great research. His books, Willpower Doesn't Work and Personality Isn't Permanent are foundational messages I come back to time and time again. Not long after I signed my book deal, I had Ben on my podcast, which was called The Ziglar Show at the time. He had shared a tidbit of personal story that grabbed my attention...so I brought him on to dig in. What he shared violated much of what I'd previously thought about drive and was a great depiction of what I'd learned and was writing in my book. Ultimately the story here is what I used as the lead off story in chapter one of my new book, What Drives You, which is just now coming out. Ben's story is an incredible depiction of a primary myth I bust, of some people being driven and some people not. Even some having more drive than others. It's just not true. Listen in to hear more. How To Accumulate Valuable Relationships | 3 Discussing Laura Tremaine with Brianna Brown Keen
There are two options for gaining the valuable relationships you want and need to have a rich, fulfilling existence. Before I tell you though, there is a foundational assumption that must be met regardless, and we actually didn’t address it in this episode, so I want to cover it here. You must have exposure. I find many people who lack friendships also don’t get much exposure to people, and especially new people. I won’t belabor this but I’ve found the absolute number one way to achieve this is get in groups of kindred spirits. Take an interest you have and get around other people with that same interest. And coworkers may not fit. Working at the same place is not the same interest. Neither is family for that matter. I’m talking to literally know what you are interested in, curious about, inspired by, and find other people who are as well. After that…the two options for accumulating valuable relationships are either instigating them, or, making friends with an instigator. This is Part 3 of my discussion on Laura Tremaine host of the 10 Things To Tell You podcast and author of her most recent book, The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs. My focus is on the friends everyone needs, women and men. To round out our discussion I invited Brianna Brown Keen on to co-host the discussion. Brianna Brown Keen is an accomplished actress, appearing in more than 20 feature films and 30 television shows. Along with being a present day, working actress, Brianna has produced an initiative and book called Manifesting Your Mission where she guides entrepreneurs, including a lot of people in show business, in making true progress toward your goals. Brianna is a relationship instigator, and we talk about what this looks like. But if you hear Brianna and feel you are not a fit for being an instigator, then I want you to hear your focus is to befriend…an instigator. Find a Brianna in your life, even if it’s as a paid part of a community or mastermind as Brianna leads. June 15-16 of 2023 I’ll be in Dallas to attend and speak at the Ziglar coach summit.
